Reap the rewards of a caring career Careers in the care and disability service sector have never been stronger, offering diverse opportunities and career pathways. Alicia Weaver is a direct support professional with Community Living & Respite Services (CLRS). She said the best part of the job was supporting clients to achieve their goals. “Whether this is a long-term goal they’ve been working towards or more basic shortterm goal,” Alicia said. “There are always going to be some challenges, but to be a part of their achievements, however big or small, is the best — it’s a privilege, I think.” Community Living & Respite Services is a not-for-profit organisation based in Echuca that provides support services for people with disability, the aged and their families. Direct support professionals, like Alicia, play a vital role in the everyday care of clients. “I feel like I’ve found something I’m passionate about and enjoy in life — supporting clients to live their best lives and educating others along the way that people with disabilities are just like everyone else, they may just need a little extra support sometimes,” she said. It’s work that has real impact, providing high quality of life to the most vulnerable in the community.

CLRS provides support to the most vulnerable in the community. “From staff, to clients, to clients’ families, to people in the community you meet while supporting clients, there are some really great people out there doing really great things,” Alicia said. There are so many opportunities that CLRS offers — sector-specific roles such

as direct support professionals and support co-ordinators, as well as administration and management roles in areas such as finance, human resources and information technology. CLRS supports staff to complete further education and training, and even takes on student placements from secondary schools,

TAFES and universities to enable people to get industry experience. “Every day is interesting, engaging and challenging; whatever your career pathway you will reap the benefits of working in the sector,” human resources manager Anna de Vrieze said.

Study locally with Bendigo TAFE Bendigo TAFE’s Echuca Campus is here to support students by offering a broad range of courses you can study locally. With flexible learning options combined with passionate teachers, strong community and industry partnerships, Bendigo TAFE is beside you every step of the way. Add in access to the Reconnect team and Learning Support service, to ensure you are on the right path. Echuca local Heather Jeffreys has been teaching VCAL at Bendigo TAFE’s Echuca Campus since 2009. “Every year the students who come into our VCAL classes are very different,” Heather said. “They are wonderful students who have struggled in the school system, come across to our VCAL program and have just thrived. The parents are amazed and the students love it. “Our small class sizes mean that our students get the help that they need. “We can see if a student is having a bit of trouble, and we can go and offer help. Then they get used to asking for help, and develop their confidence to ask us for help.” Drawing on her experience working in the disability sector, Heather has long had an interest in helping people to achieve their goals. “We have students who start at Foundation and go right through to Senior level. It’s really amazing to hear them say they’ve never

They are so excited!” Heather’s students have gone on to start apprenticeships, find employment and continue further study in a variety of fields including childcare and animal studies. One student has even gone on to university to study psychology.

“It’s amazing to see their confidence develop,” Heather said. “The best thing is when they go into the Senior class and they get to try out some work experience opportunities. “It really gives our students an idea of what they want to go onto next. If they don’t like it, that’s okay. They get to experience what work is like and find something that they love.”

Heather is particularly grateful to local businesses like Campaspe Shire Council and the Riverine Herald for their support of the VCAL program. “Their support means so much to the students,” she said. CHOOSING THE RIGHT EDUCATION, A FIRST STEP TO A FULFILLING CAREER

Looking for a rewarding career? Don’t shy away from Aged Care say Deniliquin sisters For sisters Karina and Cara, caring is in their blood. They grew up with a mother and stepmother both working as clinical specialist nurses. Now their employer, Southern Cross Care NSW &ACT, is supporting them as they study to join the family career of nursing. The two sisters work side-by-side at Southern Cross Care’s Orana Residential Care Home in Deniliquin, one of five of the provider’s homes in the Riverina. “It’s a great place to work — it’s a challenge, but that is what makes it so rewarding. You build close relationships with the residents,” Karina said. Karina always knew she wanted to work in aged care. In fact, she was 14 when she first began her caring journey. She joined Southern Cross Care in 2019 as a carer and is currently studying for the next step in her career as an endorsed enrolled nurse. With the support of Southern Cross Care, Karina is able to pursue her nursing dreams. “It is such a supportive workplace — I’m managing to study full-time, three days a week and keep working,“ she said. “Working while studying will make me a better nurse — the team is always ready to help explain things I’m learning about.” Karina isn’t the only one taking on new studies. Her sister Cara is also taking advantage of Southern Cross Care’s education support to become a registered nurse. “I’ve always been supported to study and advance my skills in the aged care sector,” Cara said. “I joined Southern Cross Care as a care service employee, then qualified as an enrolled nurse. Now I am continuing on to do a bachelor to become a registered nurse and Southern Cross Care’s support makes it possible.” Cara said while it was a juggle managing kids, work and study, she was well supported and passionate about the industry she works in. “I would love to see more people join the industry — because it really is rewarding, and there are great careers to be had.”

Nurses in the aged care sector are crucial to the clinical decision-making process and in fulfilling the health needs of residents. “To anyone who is interested in nursing, I would say don’t shy away from aged care,“ Cara said. “A lot of people may not have much experience with older people but they’ve so much to share.” A not-for-profit aged care provider, which is run and led by nurses, Southern Cross Care has a singular focus on supporting residents to age with dignity and vitality. As an enrolled nurse and team leader at the Deniliquin home, Cara said a highlight of her job was learning from the residents. “There is so much to learn from the residents, when you have the opportunity to interact with these people day-to-day,” she said. The sisters are among a large group of Southern Cross Care staff in the Riverina who are taking advantage of the aged care provider’s generous education support programs. As part of the provider’s commitment to staff’s career development and progression, Southern Cross Care offers a range of training, education and development programs. Learning takes on a multi-level approach, with internal and external courses supported, as well as relevant tertiary study. Support includes paid study and examination leave, as well as flexibility to fit in class times. Chief executive officer Helen Emmerson, who is a nurse herself, said the sector offered a range of opportunities for people. “Working in aged care is so much more than bingo and cups of tea. As a registered nurse myself I find it truly engaging,” she said. Helen said it was this focus on care which gave all staff the opportunity to develop and acquire skills and progress their careers. “At Southern Cross Care we want to see our staff thrive — we’re always looking for new ways to support education and learning.

Cara, facility manager Amanda and Karina. “We are also always looking for people who are curious about aged care and want to give it a try. We will support people to get the training they need to commence in this fulfilling career.” For Karina and Cara, their own career paths have meant they not only get to do a job they love, but they get to work together. “I don’t really see her as my sister at work. But we do know each other so well — it works really well,” Cara said. Karina agrees. “We’ve been well supported at Southern Cross Care — it’s a great team that pulls together. But it’s always great when we work together.” Southern Cross Care is recruiting for enrolled nurses, endorsed enrolled nurses, registered nurses, care service employees and support staff across the Riverina. CHOOSING THE RIGHT EDUCATION, A FIRST STEP TO A FULFILLING CAREER

Finding your own path With more and more students considering alternate career pathways, school-based traineeships and apprenticeships are proving to be choices that build workplace skills and confidence that provide a solid foundation for any future career. Moama Anglican Grammar has a strong focus on Vocational, Educational and Training (VET) pathways — schoolbased apprenticeships and school-based traineeships are two of the many options offered to students to kick-start their careers earlier than most. School-based apprenticeships offer an alternative career option, allowing students to commence vocational training, earn a wage and get hands-on experience, all while completing their secondary education. School-based traineeships allow Year 10, 11 and 12 students to work part-time with a partner business and complete their formal traineeship training by the end of their HSC year. Moama Anglican Grammar alumnus Connor Bacon started a school-based traineeship in Year 11, working toward completion of a Certificate III in Retail with McDonald’s Echuca. Connor, who graduated in 2020, recalls that as a relatively shy student, he didn’t

always enjoy school as much as other students. So, he found doing a school-based traineeship really suited him, allowing him to undertake one day per week out of school, learning on the job at McDonald’s. The traineeship also contributed toward his HSCgrades and ATAR. Connor started working at McDonald’s at 16 as a crew member. A while after he commenced his traineeship, he was promoted to become a crew-trainer. He has proceeded to move up the ranks at McDonald’s, picking up an award for School-based Apprentice of the Year at the 2020 VET Awards along the way, and is now a department manager. Connor strongly recommends school-based traineeships to students who are looking for a different experience after graduating school. “It’s allowed me to work up the ranks at my workplace and to enjoy and do a lot of different things in many different areas … all of this happened quite quickly,” he said. “It would normally take someone quite a bit longer to progress and get the same qualifications.”

Connecting students and community

Connor was one of the guest speakers at Moama Anglican Grammar’s recent Business Connect Morning.

Former Moama Anglican Grammar student Connor Bacon has a rewarding career with McDonald’s, which started as a school-based traineeship. Moama Anglican Grammar welcomed representatives from businesses across the district to facilitate connections with the school, and importantly, the students. The school is committed to creating and strengthening mutually beneficial connections with key industries and community groups in Echuca-Moama. Businesses can identify and nurture relationships with potential future employees who return to/stay in the region after finishing their studies There is an abundance of opportunity for partnerships, including schoolbased apprenticeships and traineeships, industry and workplace visits, work experience programs and student award sponsorships. For more information, contact the school’s Head of VET, Kim McFadden, via email at kmcfadden@moamagrammar.nsw.edu.au or phone on 5480 5900. Macca’s serves up valuable skills Working at Macca’s might not seem like a glamorous gig at first glance, but Echuca McDonald’s franchisee Scott Moller says a career at the Golden Arches can lead to some delicious opportunities. “It can be a stepping stone into multiple different facets of other industries,” the boss of Deniliquin, Echuca and the soon to be Moama McDonald’s stores, said. “A lot of McDonald’s careers, from the corporate side of things, actually start from within stores.” Scott said someone who starts their working life at a McDonald’s store at 15 years old will receive training and experience that will give them an edge over their peers. “It’s not just the retail experience, it’s actually the fundamental training of working in a team environment. It’s troubleshooting and thinking on your feet,” he said. “It’s handling difficult situations and problem solving. “At any one time, we can actually be making in excess of 200 to 250 burgers per hour. “We’re not an industry where you can say, ‘listen, we’re busy. Can you come back tomorrow?’. “There’s no rescheduling here. We make a plan and we deal with what’s in front of us at the time.

The new Moama store is set to bring 80 jobs to the region, which will likely rise to more than 100 once business kicks off.

“And I think that’s why those problem solving and planning skills are highly respected.” Scott recently hired Helen Fitzgibbon as his general manager. She started her working life as a crew member at McDonald’s and climbed the ranks in the organisation. After a successful career in high profile corporate roles, she came back to McDonald’s and is spearheading the opening of the new Moama store. The new Moama store is set to bring 80 jobs to the region, which will likely rise to more than 100 once business kicks off. Across the existing Echuca and Deniliquin stores, Scott employs about 210 people. Deniliquin employs seven managers and is training another three, while Echuca employs 11 managers and is training another four. The Deniliquin and Echuca stores work with district schools to provide and facilitate work experience, apprenticeships and traineeships.

New look but same dedicated service As 40 years in operation approaches, CVGT Australia is evolving with a new name and a fresh new look. From July, the organisation will be known as CVGT Employment — a new trading name but the same dedication to serving communities. “The new name is designed to better reflect our purpose of finding people meaningful employment, while also making it easier for the community to recognise what we do,” chair Liz Corbett said. “The logo was also created to demonstrate our commitment to creating connections between participants and employers, between our business and the community.” Chief executive officer Jason Russell said those ideals and values would remain at the heart of the organisation, which was still a not-forprofit, for-purpose charity. “We think this new look reflects our history while also giving us a clearer identity,” Jason said. CVGT Employment will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2023. The organisation was formed to help young unemployed people in Bendigo, and now serves communities across three states from more than 120 sites.

Teisha, Bryden and Jaclyn are part of CVGT Employment’s experienced and dedicated team. From July, CVGT Employment is a provider for the Federal Government’s new Workforce Australia program in the Goulburn Murray region. “This range of employment programs and our experience and local knowledge mean people can be confident CVGT Employment will provide a quality service,” Jason said. “For employers, they can know CVGT Employment has access to a wide range of local talent, while also providing follow-up support to ensure new staff are successful.”
