A HELPFUL GUIDE TO SELECTING AND APPLYING FOR EDUCATION, APPRENTICESHIPS & EMPLOYMENT

Grants are available to support women in taking on more senior roles in the sports sector, with new grants to help women upskill and take their careers from strength to strength.

Victorian Community Sport Minister Ros Spence has announced that applications are now open for the Labor Government’s Change Our Game Professional Development Scholarships Program, with grants of up to $10,000 available for recipients across the state.

“We’re focused on levelling the playing field for women leaders in sport by providing professional development opportunities to advance their careers.”

Ms Spence said.

“This program supports women to develop skills and career pathways to thrive in leadership roles across sport.”

The program ensures that more women have the opportunities and support they need to build careers in the sports sector.

The grants support women across all career stages — from those in the early years of their careers, returning from a career break such as parental leave, to executives and new or aspiring board members.

These tailored support streams include specialised skill development courses, a Next Generation Leaders stream, which offers coaching for aspiring executives to map their career paths, develop their skills and expand their industry

Supporting women’s sport careers Program launched to train teachers

The Victorian Government is launching a new pilot program to allow more than 300 dedicated education support staff and Koorie education support officers to gain teaching qualifications while working in schools.

The program will enable rural and regional education support staff — employed in various roles such as teaching assistants, integration aides, and cultural liaison officers — to pursue a full teaching qualification and help combat the Australia-wide issue of teacher shortages.

Victorian Education Minister Ben Carroll launched the $13.9 million initiative to trial undergraduate-level employmentbased teaching degrees to upskill Victorian Government secondary and specialist school staff.

“The Allan Labor Government is proud to invest $13.9 million, so our outstanding education support staff have the support they need to pursue rewarding teaching careers,” Mr Carroll said.

“The undergraduate level employment-based teaching degree initiative opens up teaching to a broader pool of diverse candidates by supporting staff to gain teaching qualifications while working in our schools.

“The initiative is yet another example of the Victorian Government removing financial and geographical barriers so that our schools can recruit the next

generation of dedicated teachers.”

The innovative and tailored program, set to start in 2025, will be delivered by Federation University Australia and La Trobe University and will support people in studying and qualifying as teachers while undertaking paid employment. Participants will be supported with Department of Education-funded living expenses scholarships, relocation incentives and mentoring support.

In the final years of the program, they will be eligible to start teaching as paraprofessionals.

Both universities programs will focus on supporting participation by education support staff in rural and regional Victoria.

At the same time, La Trobe University’s program will encourage involvement from Koorie education support officers.

The new undergraduate-level employment-based teaching degrees will further expand Victoria’s nation-leading suite of employment-based teaching degrees – known as the Teach Today and Teach Tomorrow programs, currently available to postgraduate students.

networks.

This round of the program will feature a new Community Leaders stream, which will support women volunteering or working in community sport and recreation to gain better access to professional development opportunities.

The program also offers a new dedicated Women with a Disability stream to support women with a disability living in regional Victoria who want to progress their career in the sector, while the Governance stream allows new or aspiring board directors to complete a specialised sports governance course.

Past program participants include Ashleigh Humphries, who participated in the Next Generation Leaders stream and has since become Head of Club Projects at Richmond Football Club, and Amy Welsh, who participated in the Learning stream and has since become Affiliate Support Manager at Hockey Victoria.

Since beginning in 2018, more than 500 women have been supported through the Change Our Game professional development programs. Applications close Monday, August 26.

With the introduction of the new VCE VM (Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major) and VPC (Victorian Pathway Certificate) programs across Victoria, you might be curious about their benefits compared to the traditional VCE and VCAL programs. Marc McDonald, a teacher at Bendigo TAFE, sheds light on these innovative options and their relevance today.

Why choose VCE VM?

When asked about the benefits of opting for VCE VM, Marc highlighted its practicality and relevance to real-world careers. “VCE VM not only prepares students for further vocational training, including TAFE, or university, but also equips them with employable skills, giving them an edge in the job market. The program also uses a more diverse range of assessment strategies rather than focus on exams or ATAR scores. This helps to alleviate some of the pressure students face when considering VCE options”.

At the Echuca campus, students can choose from three streams: Building and Construction, Salon Assistant, and Engineering. Meanwhile, the Bendigo City campus expands options with six additional streams: Electro Technology, Allied Health, Animal Care, Automotive, Cookery, and Early Childhood Education and Care.

Marc expressed his pride in being part of Bendigo TAFE, noting, “Bendigo TAFE is committed to student success and community engagement, providing a supportive environment where every student can thrive. Our teachers and staff care about individual learning needs. We understand everyone learns differently and at their own pace.”

Student Experiences

Addressing prospective students, Marc offered this advice: “Stay curious and embrace every learning opportunity. Your journey at Bendigo TAFE will shape your future in ways you may not expect.”

The VPC is an inclusive Year 11 and 12 certificate which is designed to meet the needs of students who require a more individualised and flexible program for their last two years of secondary schooling.

Jokai Foti, a VPC student stated that studying at Bendigo TAFE has been a rewarding experience. “The coursework has been straightforward and easy to grasp, thanks to supportive teachers and a friendly environment that suits me better than traditional schooling. Whenever I’ve struggled, classmates and teachers have been there to lend a hand”, Jokai said.

“Balancing my workload with other commitments has been manageable due to the structured guidance from teachers, who provide clear expectations and sufficient in-class time to complete tasks. Overcoming initial challenges, like adjusting to a new environment, was eased by the welcoming atmosphere and interactive class introductions” he explained.

Jokai plans to pursue his dream by continuing his studies in 3D video effects at La Trobe University after completing his current education.

Preparing for the Future

As Victoria’s education system evolves, programs like VCE VM and VPC at institutions such as Bendigo TAFE are paving the way for diverse learning paths that match student interests and career goals. Whether students aim for university degrees or vocational qualifications, these programs promise to provide the skills and confidence needed to thrive in today’s competitive global economy. Zach conquers fear to find purpose

Building skills and developing confidence in the workplace can be a long journey with many bumps in the road.

But with the support of CVGT Employment, Zach is embarking on what he hopes can be a long and fruitful career serving the community.

When he chose during 2023 to connect with our Echuca team, Zach was worried he would never find work.

His motivation levels were low and he lacked experience, while his physical and mental disabilities were barriers to employment.

“I didn’t know what kind of job I was looking for because I had no pathway before,” he says.

“For a long time, I was afraid to try and I just thought I would be on income support forever.”

To help overcome those fears and start building some workplace experience, our team found Zach a volunteer role.

“Completing volunteer shifts with Echuca Neighborhood House, along with some internal workshops at CVGT, saw Zach’s confidence begin

to grow,” CVGT consultant Tammy says.

“During this time, he completed a Ready, Set, Digital Employment program which he found very useful.”

By the end of 2023, Zach was better prepared to try again to find paid employment.

“I met with Zach to chat about what job industries he is interested in,” Rhiannon, CVGT Business Development Consultant, says.

“I was impressed by how intelligent Zach is. He had a keen interest in administration, and I knew he would be a great applicant for an administration position with Njernda Aboriginal Corporation.”

With the support of the Echuca team, a job application was made with the Njernda Aboriginal Corporation.

“Njernda were so impressed and inspired by Zach’s determination to break through generational unemployment and were willing to support him in any way possible,” Rhiannon says.

For Zach, an Indigenous man, working for Njernda is a great fit.

“I email agendas, minutes and other information that is necessary to be communicated, and I may do an odd job here or there, including laminating and preparation for events,” he says.

“It’s a good work environment and I work with good people.”

Zach is grateful for the support he’s received from CVGT via the Disability Employment Services program, and glad he decided to change employment service providers.

“This hasn’t been a smooth road for Zach, with new barriers to employment arising, however he feels more comfortable communicating with the team to get support to become more independent,” Tammy says.

CVGT has helped Zach to pay for his work uniforms and shoes, organise driving lessons and, as he puts it, has provided a safe space to talk about his barriers and goals.

“Go to CVGT, they will get you employed,” he says.

“Having a supportive provider and someone you can ask for help is important.

“And I would say to people –don’t be afraid to try! Having a supportive provider and someone you can ask for help is important.”

Leader of The Nationals and Member for Murray Plains, Peter Walsh, says careers – short of winning the Lotto –are something we all have the face sooner or later.

So, Mr Walsh says the best thing you can do is find one which really appeals to you and prepare to give yourself every chance to make it a success.

Which he says could be the subject paths you choose in high school, or a TAFE combined with hands-on experience.

“Or you may end up in a career you never dreamt of once you find yourself out there in the wider world,” Mr Walsh adds.

“And in this day and age, with so many new career paths opening so often, the options go way beyond the traditional choices,” he says.

“I know a young man who went to agricultural college because he always wanted to be a farmer – and at 32 has just completed a marine engineering apprenticeship and is currently working on ferries around Australia.

“The trick is, if you find the career you love, you’ll often shake your head in disbelief

that someone will pay you to do it.”

Life, Mr Walsh says, is the greatest educator and as long as you have the right attitude, you can’t go too far wrong.

He says as a tomato farmer in Boort, politics never crossed his mind, yet he has spent more than 20 years in the Victorian Parliament.

“But the key to finding your niche is education and learning to get a passion for it as soon as possible, learning is a life skill you never lose and it is remarkable the worlds it will open for you,” Mr Walsh says.

“That is one of the gifts the traditional start will give you, it teaches you to learn and from there on it is up to you.

“But if you are not learning something new every day you can very quickly slip into neutral, and that doesn’t get you anywhere,” he says.

In 2022, CLRS engaged Xref Engage (formerly the Voice Project) to gather confidential data to make informed data-driven decisions and empower sta to have a voice.

This survey is an important step in achieving the CLRS strategic objective of having an engaged, inclusive and skilled workforce.

It is an important part of the work being done to ensure that every employee has an opportunity to have their say and voice heard about the organisation’s performance and ways of working.

Following what was a challenging period with COVID-19 and the floods, the 2022 survey provided exceptional results.

The overall results showed strong engagement, wellbeing, and progress, scoring moderate to high across the

three areas.

Post the 2022 survey, CLRS worked with the sta to establish ‘Voice Teams’ to focus on priority areas and put forward recommendations for consideration.

This is an important part of the process ensuring we understood our sta feedback and put these into action.

Less than 12 months after the 2022 survey, CLRS conducted a further survey to understand its progress and what additional work needs to be done.

The survey results showed an overwhelming improvement across all

areas, with sta reporting exceptional engagement and satisfaction levels.

CLRS exceeded the 80 per cent or above sta satisfaction criteria to be awarded an Xref Best Workplace Award.

“We recorded sta satisfaction of 86 per cent, which was an amazing 12 per cent above the Disability Services benchmark, enabled by the strong improvement in results since last year, with overall satisfaction rising seven per cent,” CEO Leah Taa e said.

As a result of these fantastic results, CLRS was awarded the Xref Best Workplace Award for 2023.

Direct Support Professionals roles may involve providing assistance with daily living including meals, personal care, hoisting, assistance with everyday household tasks, and meaningful engagement in our local community.

The prestigious award recognises the best workplaces with excellent management practices and a highly engaged workforce.

CLRS remains committed to working with sta through its ‘Voice Teams’ to empower and collaborate with sta to sustain excellent engagement, wellbeing and progress.

A career in disability o ers you a wide range of opportunities to grow your career, while making a di erence in the lives of people with disability.

CLRS encourages sta to have a minimum of a Certificate III in Individual Support — Disability or similar.

Where sta do not have qualifications, support is available through a traineeship program or paid study leave.

So come and work for an organisation that values your voice and wants to support your development.
