CELEBRATE FESTIVE SEASON IN CAMPASPE

AS WE COME TOGETHER FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON, IT’S  A PERFECT TIME TO REFLECT ON WHAT MATTERS MOST.

For some, like myself, Christmas is a joyous time spent with family and friends.

For others, it may be different, but one constant is community.

Whether your community celebrates Christmas or not, whether it is large or small, made up of friends and family or neighbours, it can be a very special time if we foster a spirit of kindness and care for each other.

Campaspe Shire Council is working hard to add some magic to this time of year by supporting community events.

This year, we are thrilled to sponsor the Christmas lights competition.

Throughout the shire, you’ll find activities for all ages.

Our parks and gardens staff have done an outstanding job maintaining our beautiful green spaces, ensuring they are perfect for festive gatherings.

It can also be a time of struggle and hardship.

Let’s come together to support community organisations and their dedicated volunteers who help those less fortunate.

Many organisations run holiday gift drives to ensure every child experiences the magic of Christmas.

Your contribution can bring a smile to a child’s face and create lasting memories, while also helping our local economy.

Supporting local businesses is crucial, especially during the holiday season.

We encourage you to shop locally and

support the wonderful entrepreneurs who contribute so much to our community.

So, whether you’re visiting Santa’s cave in Kyabram, touring the Tongala hay bale trail, saluting the toy soldiers at the Nanneella memorial hall, snapping an Elfie selfie in Rushworth, visiting Echuca’s illumination station, riding Santa’s sleigh in Lockington, gearing up for story time in Gunbower, singing in the soundshell at Girgarre, spending up at the Rochester market, delving into Stanhope’s Christmas Cave, or punching out a few tunes on Colbinabbin’s pub choir Christmas trail — we’ve got something for everyone.

Most of all, know that whatever you have planned for the holiday season, you are part of an amazing shire wide community.

Warm regards Pauline Gordon Campaspe Shire Council CEO

PERFECT HAM SECRET SHARED

IT IS A TRADITION TO SERVE A GLAZED HAM AT CHRISTMAS, A LEG OF MOISTENED, WARMED THROUGH HAM GLAZED WITH A MIXTURE OF SOMETHING SWEET AND A LITTLE BIT OF SPICE.

For a unique and beloved way of glazing ham for Christmas, we had the privilege of visiting the Kyabram Main St Butcher and acquiring Troy Pycock’s mum’s one-of-a-kind recipe for glazed ham.

Troy’s mum, Janet, was handed this recipe from an American friend, Lynn.

Troy, the new owner of Kyabram Main St Butcher, now raises pigs locally for his Goulburn Valley Pork brand, bringing farm-fresh ham and pork to our community.

Troy and his wife Abby, along with their three children, lovingly raise heritage Berkshire Hampshire cross free-range pigs and beef on their family farm in Wyuna.

Get your hands on Goulburn Valley Pork at Kyabram Main St Butchers, or visit their stall at the Echuca Farmers’ Market and other nearby regional markets.

Troy strongly recommends ordering your hams as early as possible, as stock is limited, for pick-up the weekend before Christmas.

This will ensure you’re well-prepared for the festive season.

INGREDIENTS

Half a leg of Goulburn Valley ham

1¼ cups of apricot jam

¼ cup of brown sugar

Optional: 2 tsp of Dijon mustard

METHOD

1. Preheat your oven to 180°C.

2. Combine the jam, sugar and mustard in a small saucepan. Heat, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved.

3. Remove the rind from the ham, leaving as much fat as possible. You may need to ask your butcher to do this for you.

4. Make cross cuts in the ham to hold the glaze, creating a diamond pattern.

5. Place the ham on an oven tray and pour an even amount of glaze over it, getting the glaze into all the cuts.

6. Cook at 180°C for approximately 1 hour. A rule of thumb is 15 minutes for every kilo of weight.

7. You will need to baste the ham every 30 minutes to keep the glaze oozing into the meat.

While apricot jam works wonderfully, why not try an exciting twist?
For an extra flavour kick, grab a jar of Cherry and Black Pepper jam from Quincey Jones Jelly at the Echuca Farmers’ Market.

SANTA DELIGHTED TO ATTEND SPECIAL EVENTS

This festive tradition, which took a break in 2023, is now back in full swing for the upcoming holiday season.

Deb Watson, the Bamawm Extension CFA fundraising volunteer and Santa’s booking agent, is excited about expanding Santa’s availability in 2024.

“It is our main fundraiser for the year,” Deb said.

“Being stuck out in the bush, we don’t have anything or anywhere we can do fundraising.”

The initiative serves a dual purpose: spreading Christmas cheer and raising funds for the brigade.

Santa, accompanied by the CFA captain driving the

fire truck, is available to visit community events, businesses and groups.

“We put the lights and sirens on as we head up to the venue with Santa in the back of the truck,” Deb said.

Santa has delighted children and adults alike in previous years at schools, pre-schools, disability services, and aged care facilities.

The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive.

“And the look on the kids’ faces is just magical, some of them running up to the truck to meet Santa,” Deb said.

Despite Santa’s busy schedule, safety remains a priority.

The Bamawm Extension’s second truck remains on standby for emergencies when Santa is out and about.

Santa’s availability spans from late November through December and bookings have already started pouring in.

Those interested in arranging a visit from Santa and the Bamawm Extension CFA fire truck can phone Deb Watson at 0422 382 668 or email debdavenicjosh@outlook.com

BLUEY’S NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

All children (and adults) love Bluey, so of course, Bluey’s Night Before Christmas had to make the list.

‘Twas the night before Chrissie, when inside their home, not a Heeler was stirring, not even a gnome.

It’s Christmas Eve, and Bluey and Bingo are tucked up snug in their beds. When suddenly a noise outside wakes them up … Who could it be?

GEARING UP FOR A ‘TREE-MENDOUS’ DISPLAY

ECHUCA-MOAMA UNITING CHURCH’S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE DISPLAY IS SET TO RETURN — RUNNING FROM SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14 TO SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21.

Each year, businesses, schools, groups or individuals, create their own Christmas trees to contribute to the display.

The event has grown immensely since it first began with 24 organisations delivering on one or more Christmas trees.

MBC Functions Section

Church member Yvonne Pearce said the display was borne out of wanting to revive the town’s Christmas spirit.

“In a way, originally it was started because there wasn’t a huge community response during Christmas,” she said.

“What we are trying to do is keep it going and have that involvement and try each year for a little more involvement.

“It’s built up a lot since the first one until now, it’s built up quite considerably.”

More schools, community groups and businesses are being urged to take part this year.

Any community groups or individuals interested in creating a tree for the display are encouraged to email echucamoamauca@bigpond.com by Friday, November 29.

All trees must be delivered and set up on Friday, December 13 between 3 pm and 5 pm.

The display will then be open to the public from Saturday, December 14 to Saturday, December 21 between 10 am to 2 pm.

Book your Christmas party with us and enjoy a stunning atmosphere, delicious food, carefully crafted cocktails, an award winning wine list, and exceptional service!

SPREADING CHRISTMAS KINDNESS

One of the best ways to embrace this season is by encouraging children to spread kindness within their families and communities.

Engaging in acts of kindness not only brightens the lives of others but also fosters important values like empathy, compassion and connection.

Here are some delightful activities that families can enjoy together to cultivate the spirit of kindness during Christmas.

CREATING HANDMADE GIFTS

Encourage children to tap into their creativity by making handmade gifts for family members or friends.

From decorated picture frames to personalised ornaments, these thoughtful creations often hold more meaning than store-bought items.

Spend an afternoon crafting together, sharing stories and laughter as you create unique treasures.

WRITING CHRISTMAS CARDS

Writing heartfelt Christmas cards is a simple yet impactful way for children to express their feelings.

Gather supplies like coloured paper, markers, and stickers, and let kids design cards to send to grandparents, friends or even local nursing homes.

The joy of receiving a personalised card can brighten someone’s day and foster a sense of connection.

VOLUNTEERING TOGETHER

Making time to volunteer as a family can be a rewarding experience.

Look for local shelters, food banks, or community centres that welcome volunteers during the holiday season.

Whether it’s sorting food donations or serving meals, children will learn the importance of giving back and the impact they can make in their community.

ACTS OF KINDNESS CALENDAR

Create a “kindness calendar” for December, where each day features a simple act of kindness to complete as a family.

Ideas can include leaving a kind note for a neighbour, donating old toys, or helping a sibling with their chores.

This fun activity not only spreads joy, but also encourages children to think about how their actions can positively affect others.
