The home of alternative ideas Enter the fascinating nerve-centre of alternative farming, where innovation and one-of-a-kind production techniques are integral. The 26th annual Seymour Alternative Farming Expo brings together the best in Australia in an informative and entertaining event from February 16 to 18. Featuring up to 500 exhibitors and more than 20 000 patrons across the three days, this bustling expo features displays and demonstrations, informative lecture series, a market-style shopping experience, food and liquor tastings, live entertainment and the opportunity to talk with the alternative farmers themselves. “If you are looking for advice on alternative products or want to tap into the latest innovative ideas that will assist you in being
a successful farmer, then the expo is the place to visit,” MMG events manager Susie Filleti said. “There is a real festival feel this year too, with three busy food courts and a bar, and all palates are catered for with the range of delicious food, wine and cider on offer.” Cutting edge industries take centre stage this year, such as the special guest Grubs Up insect farm from Western Australia, which farms crickets for both human and animal consumption. Be amazed by the skill and expertise in the 2018 AWPA Victorian Whip-cracking and Australian Bullock Whip Championships, which were previously featured at the Royal Melbourne Show and will now be hosted by the expo. Get set to laugh and be highly entertained by this year’s pig-racing and pig-diving demonstrations, which are as funny and unusual as they sound, and the Flipping Disc
Dogz, energetic display of tricks and stunts. Children are also celebrated at this year’s expo, with a mini festival line-up just for them. There are DIY projects, camel rides, an animal petting farm and all sorts of animals to see. The huge success of this event has a flow-on effect every year to the wider community of Seymour. “The event contributes about $6"million in economic impact every year, from the exhibitors staying in town through to getting their coffees down the street,” Ms Filleti said. “The town embraces the event and we have some great supporters in the community, and equally, the event generates a positive economic outcome for the Mitchell Shire region via this $6"million impact.” The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo will be held from February 16 to 18 at Kings Park in Seymour. Dogs set to wow crowd High-fiving, Frisbee-catching, people-jumping dogs will take centre stage in an action-packed show at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Flipping Disc Dogz’s eight border collies will be putting on a trick-filled show sure to entertain people and keep them on the edge of their seats.
to participate in one of the tricks, with unsuspecting spectators often selected to be one of the four people that Raighn leaps over.
Co-owner and trainer Beau Pearson, who runs the business with his partner Sim Hellebrand, said visitors to the expo were in for a treat as the dogs put their best paws forward.
Having worked with and trained dog performers for more than six years, Mr Pearson said the idea for the show originally drew lots of inspiration from dog sports such as agility trials, before the shows got bigger and the tricks got more difficult and complex.
Mr Pearson said the public could expect a jaw-dropping, fun and action-packed show. “Especially when they see some of the tricks the dogs do in the air,” he said. “We have Ava’s handstand and Sienna’s allpaw high-five, which is a high-five with all four paws"—"she’s the first dog in the world to get that trick. “We also have Daisy who plays quoits and holds the world record for stacking the most quoits (32) in 60 seconds.” Those watching may even get a chance
“It can take anywhere from five minutes to 12 months to train a dog to do a trick. A handstand is the trick that’s taken us the longest to teach,” he said. After spending weeks out of the year travelling with his furry companions, Mr Pearson said the dogs were much loved.
Flipping Disc Dogz’s eight border collies are set to wow the crowd with their bag of tricks.
“I wouldn’t call them my pets; I’d call them my family. They’re basically our children,” he said.
The Flipping Disc Dogz will perform a 30 minute show three times a day on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at the main oval. The show times are: 10.15!am, 12.15!pm and 2.15!pm.
Pigs are going to fly Agile and acrobatic pigs will be on display at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo for the first time, with a production showcasing the animals’ running and diving skills.
Pig racing and diving will keep crowds enthralled at this year’s Seymour expo.
The Pig Racing Australia show will see the pigs demonstrate their sprinting skills in two races"—"a straight track and loop track race"—"with the animals capable of running 50"m in about five seconds. MTV Productions owner Michael Vandeleur, who runs the show, said for many people it was the piglets diving from a diving board almost 3"m high that really grabbed their attention. Mr Vandeleur’s father Tom currently holds the Guinness World Record for longest distance jumped by a pig into a pool, when his pig Miss Piggy completed a 3.31"m dive in Darwin in 2005. With 25 years in the business, South-Australian based Mr Vandeleur has seen the popularity of the pig acts grow, with more people running the shows and more coming to each show. “We have packed houses all the time. We can seat
Eco Bird Scarer
between 700 and 800 people but we’ll get 1200plus usually,” he said. “We’re looking forward to coming to Seymour; it exposes you to a new audience, new places and gives you an opportunity to expose people to something they’ve maybe seen somewhere else and just show them what can be done.” Each pig undertakes six weeks of training before being exposed to crowds to ensure they’re calm and comfortable when it comes to performing on the big stage. They travel to shows in complete comfort, with an airconditioned and spacious bus keeping them cool on warm summer days. Watch the Pig Racing Australia show at the main oval at the Seymour expo, with shows being held each day at 11!am, 1!pm and 3!pm.

Big dreams come to life on small farms
>>>
ANNA FEATHERSTONE knows what she is talking — and writing — about when it comes to making the move from the concrete canyons of our cities to a magical life on the land. It has only taken her 10 years to almost get it right. She and husband Andrew Campbell have also recorded the journey of many like themselves in a book about, well, about small farms
A
LOVELY couple from Western Sydney, parents of three young children, were recently lamenting the changing nature of their suburb, the increasing height of the apartments, their skyrocketing blood pressure and their growing sense of futility.
They desperately wanted to move to a small farm but it seemed like too big a big decision for them to make and they feared doing so would be financially detrimental. I thought about their predicament. It’s one my husband and I faced more than a decade ago and probably something many readers of this magazine have faced!—!or are facing!—!as well. What a difference 10 years makes though. Our decision to move to a rundown 36!ha farm on the Mid North Coast of NSW launched us on a journey like no other. Our main interest initially was to develop our skills so we could live more sustainably!—!and give our kids
the opportunity to grow up as capable contributors. What we didn’t factor in, however, was how intoxicating learning new skills would be for us adults. The farm we bought had a house, fences with more holes than Swiss cheese and a creek that had stopped running in the dry. Its soil was barren from too many burns and the only thing growing well was fireweed. But looking beyond that what it did have going for it were stunning views, easy access to the local village and beaches!—!and two simple, weatherboard cottages that meant we could begin earning immediate income through a farm-stay offering. We didn’t really have a plan, but we did have a dream. We didn’t really have a budget, but we did have a vision. We didn’t really know what we were doing, but we dedicated ourselves to learning. Fast.
PAGE 12—‘Seymour Alternative Farming Expo’, February, 2018
Landcare, Seedsavers, locals, books, magazines such as Small Farms and the internet became our university. Learning, doing and seeing the results of everything we attempted from soil regeneration to crafting beeswax balms became our drug. Our interests were so broad our farm was never going to be a monoculture and by fulfilling our curiosity, the broadness of our offering became the attraction. But trying our hand at so many things also became a distraction and increased our workload immensely. It has been both a fun and frantic home and workplace which I’ve written about in Honey Farm Dreaming, an upcoming memoir due out in April. In the early days we concentrated on building the farm-stay business and dovetailed other projects around it. These projects included putting in a three megalitre dam and installing a solar pump irrigation system to troughs across the farm.
With the help of Landcare we fenced off riparian zones and planted more than 1000 trees as a wildlife corridor and for bee fodder. We overhauled and fenced in a large vegetable garden and began building our foundation herds of Miniature Galloway cattle, Dorper sheep (to help with the fireweed control), Saanen milking goats and Araucana and Light Sussex chickens. A rescue horse also came along for the ride, as did a feral ratter cat and assortment of crossbred sheep and goats. We then found beekeeping mentors and moved into Italian honey bees and native Australian stingless bees. The bounty of all the above led us to explore volunteer labour through Helpx and WWOOF and we eventually ended up hosting more than 110 backpackers from all over the world who helped us produce everything from goat’s milk soaps to beeswax lip balms, helped plant and pick our annual crop of rosellas (wild hibiscus)

“It’s a big decision to move to the country, but it’s just as big a decision to stay living a life you don’t enjoy” and turmeric, helped spin and bottle honey and worked alongside us at farmers markets. Family dinners were a riot (sometimes literally) with this crew. Along the way the farm-stay won gold at the NSW Tourism Awards and silver at the QANTAS Australian Tourism Awards. Entering awards helped us get muchneeded publicity, which meant we could spend less money marketing the farm and more on the farm itself. When guests arrived we gave them the best time we could, and some guests returned more than 20 times in the space of 10 years, while others flew from Singapore just to stay with us. Our tiny farm, run on a tiny budget, had a big heart, and guests warmed to that, for the most part accepting us and our shortcomings. In the past decade we experimented, grew personally and regenerated the land and ourselves.
We experienced exhilarating highs and lows. In the final analysis, though, we learnt skills and made memories worth more than any deposit in a bank. We also made plenty of mistakes too and that’s why it was so interesting to interview other farmers from around the country for the book Small Farm Success Australia. It gave us a real insight into how others farm and how they feel about it. As we think about moving on from our own first farm to a new one, we will approach it differently again. So, on reflection, I’d say to that young couple from Western Sydney “work out a way to do it so you manage the financial risk"—"such as having an offfarm income, or renting out your city house, while renting in a rural area to test the waters”. I’d also say “go for it, we all only have so many years on this planet to find our calling and contribute.” Then point out to them “it’s a big decision to move to the country, but it’s just as big a decision to stay living a life you don’t enjoy”. Finally, to those who are already farming I would say, “the earth needs good people and good farmers, thank you so very, very much for what you are doing.”

Small farms distilled by, well, small farmers
A
ndrew Campbell and Anna Featherstone founded Honeycomb Valley Farm in Nabiac, NSW more than a decade ago.
It is a small but productive farm that has commercially produced everything from organic turmeric and wild hibiscus, to goats’ milk soaps, honey from native and Italian bees and beeswax balms. The farm has won state and national awards for its agritourism offering, which includes a farm-stay. Andrew has a degree in animal husbandry (though still can’t pick his favourite out of sheep, cattle, horses, goats, alpacas and chooks) and is also an experienced small business adviser through the NSW Government’s Business
Connect program. Anna thinks about the environment a lot, loves growing Chinese raisins, turmeric and tulsi and is a balm-maker, bee lover, writer and speaker. They wanted to inform, inspire and entertain other small farmers and tree changers so have written the book Small Farm Success Australia. In it they have tapped into the knowledge of more than 25 farmers from around Australia who are doing all sorts of amazing things to make their finances, farms, lifestyle and passions work. What does success mean to you? Is it making a fortune and/ or having a fulfilled life and leaving a positive legacy?

I’ll send the drone out to look at the water troughs and see if the horses are okay. That saves me a lot of time.”

Look at fishing from another angle Fishing lovers young and old will receive a master class courtesy of Michael Cooke and the Super Tank Fishing Show. Bringing more than 60 years of fishing experience to the Seymour Alternative farming Expo, Mr Cooke is well versed in all things fishing. He said he would offer people a chance to see a “fish’s eye view” of how lures worked. Using a 15"m by 3"m Perspex tank, onlookers will get the chance to see exactly what goes on under the surface without having to set foot in the water. “We talk surface lure for cod, hardbody lures, soft plastics, yellow-belly lures and salt and freshwater fishing,” Mr Cooke said.
Having made the trip from the Gold Coast to Seymour a number of times over the years, Mr Cooke is returning to the expo after a couple of years break. “I’m really looking forward to coming back,” he said. “It’s a good town with nice people, and a good event and good fishing down at the local river.” The 20-minute shows will be held hourly at sites T3-T5, with the first show beginning at 9.30!am. Mr Cooke will be on hand between shows to offer advice and tips for avid anglers.
You can predict the weather Agriculture technology company The Yield has brought together the power of digital technology to take the guesswork out of predicting the weather. Inspired by the daily struggle to acquire detailed and localised weather data, The Yield founder and managing director Ros Harvey said the company’s app Sensing+ and free growers’ weather app had helped fill the information void. “Growers face enormous uncertainty trying to pre-empt weather, and its impact can be disastrous. But many still rely on weather apps that might be showing data from hundreds of kilometres away,” Ms Harvey said. “For intensive irrigated crops, hyper-localised weather conditions

are the ones that matter.” Created following two years of research and development with Australian growers, the Sensing+ app converts data collected from on-farm sensors into a seven-day weather forecast. The company’s free app is the only application to show figures for evapotranspiration, the sum of evaporation off the earth’s surface and plant transpiration, crunching 2.5#million Bureau of Meteorology data records every six days to predict the weekly amount of evapotranspiration to aid growers. The team now operates out of Melbourne, and is looking forward to coming along to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. “We want to meet and chat with local irrigated crop growers about the types of challenges they’re facing, and see where there might be an opportunity for the system to solve some pain points for them, and to provide a greater level of confidence when it comes to decision-making,” Ms Harvey said. PregRite Genetics can help find the right bull for your cow.
PregRite Genetics owner and technician Garth Matthews said the new Good Bulls app was one way technology was helping farmers meet their breeding objectives. PregRight Genetics, a distributor for Genetics Australia, will be at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. “It helps you pick bulls using a phone or tablet and it’s another tool we use to pick the right bull for your cow,” Mr Matthews said. The Good Bulls app sorts, filters, shortlists and exports bulls to meet your preferences. The Rushworth-based PregRight Genetics specialises in artificial breeding for beef and
dairy cattle, including artificial insemination, pregnancy and selling and storing semen. From hobby famers to large-scale dairies, Mr Matthews said artificial breeding was beneficial for all farmers. “Famers should be considering artificial insemination to improve herd fertility,” he said. “You have better access to better bulls at a competitive rate. “You can also shorten calving periods by pregnancy testing and you can sort out health problems too.” For more information from PregRite Genetics staff visit their stall at site B24A.
This is the view of Alternative Growing Solutions manager Graeme Joyce, who will be at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo to share his tips for improving soil health. “We’re encouraging people to farm in a more sustainable way and use biological products. We understand not all farmers can and come from a more traditional farming background,” he said. “It’s about ensuring everything is working well so the plants can convert the nitrogen into useable plant food .".". (and) promote better quality growth into the paddock and into the crops,
delivering better yields.” With a focus on improving the structure, friability and sustainability of soils, the range of products the business sells under the SoilCharge banner are a mixture of liquid and granular products, including insecticides and fertilisers. Mr Joyce said using the right products could significantly reduce the use of fungicides and chemical conditioners, as well as reduce water and production costs. The Alternative Growing Solutions team is located at site B43.

Mr Hensley said he was excited to work with their cricket powder. “It’s a completely new concept to me. I’ve eaten a few fried crickets but the idea of working with cricket powder that is very high in protein is something I haven’t come across,” he said.

Poultry continues to pull crowds Whether you are just starting out with chickens or you are an experienced hand at raising poultry, the Poultry Shed has birds for all needs. After more than 15 years at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, Seymour Poultry Club president Enola Halpin said it was a great opportunity for breeders to sell their birds as well as educate the public about poultry. Each year brings together different types of poultry"—"from chickens to ducks and guinea fowl to the unique silkie chickens"—"and there are hundreds of birds on display in total. “People will come in and we’ll have a chat about what bird they’d like and what they’re looking for. There is no doubt Highland cattle ooze the cute factor, however for many their horns are a deterrent. But those dangerous horns are now a thing of the past. Julia and Kerry Webster from Mayfield Poll Highland Cattle have been breeding the Scottish natives since 1991, but 10 years ago they realised there was demand for a hornless alternative. That is when they started breeding Poll Highland cattle. “Australia has become very conscious of health and safety issues,” Mrs Webster said. “I started to breed them (hornless) because I didn’t want to chop the

horns off. There’s no danger and they’re easier to handle.” Mrs Webster said Poll Highland cattle could adapt to all Australian climates. “They have double coat in winter which is quite long but they shed that in the summer so the heat doesn’t bother them at all,” she said. Big and small machinery William Adams Ag is quickly becoming a regular at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, with the team returning to show off its wide range of equipment. With five branches throughout Victoria, the company has the machine to suit everyone’s agriculture needs, big or small, and carries 13 brands of equipment from tractors to machinery and implements. Shepparton branch manager Christian Barnett said this year’s display would include the Deutz and Kioti tractor range. “The Deutz tractors start at 62!hp and extend right up to 340!hp, with the recent introduction of a 65 and 80!hp cab tractor to the range to suit the small or medium farmer,” Mr Barnett said. “The Kioti range focuses more on the smaller range of tractors with the CS2610 the starting point at just 26!hp, with the PX1052 is the biggest tractor in the range at 105!hp.” All Kioti tractors come standard with a level lift loader and 4-in-1

William Adams Ag also carries Vicon, Fella and McHale brands which cover the hay market, as well as Aitchison Seeders along with Maschio and Lemken tillage and cultivation gear. “With such a diverse range of products at our disposal, we are sure to have the right equipment, whether it be your small acreage or hobby farmer, right up to your broadacre guys who require plenty of horsepower,” Mr Barnett said. most cases, arrange overnight delivery of parts if they are not “We have technicians based in-store. out of our Shepparton branch who can carry out standard “We look forward to welcoming servicing or major repairs, as all new and existing clients well as service units that can to our site at the expo. The Telstra team from Shepparton Marketplace look forward to meeting patrons at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. “Please note that the performance of 4!g devices in 4!gX areas will not be improved by using a Smart Antenna 4!g device unless a compatible 4!gX device is used.”

Not all external antennas allow direct connection to the handset or broadband device.” Most mobile broadband devices are compatible for use with an external antenna. Mobile handsets compatible for use with an external antenna are the Telstra Tough Max (T84) and the Telstra Tough 4 (T55/T55A). Come and see the Telstra team at site E4.

Celebrating the country lifestyle During the past year, we’ve seen a renewed interest for regional development and indications that a growing number of young people are turning their backs on the capital cities, opting instead to attain a better quality of life living in the country. To that end, for more than 25 years, the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo has consistently showcased and celebrated the many opportunities available in rural and regional Australia. And, for those who have long known the benefits of living in the country, the Seymour expo continues to provide information on the latest innovative practices in hobby and medium-scale farming. As Member for the Northern Victoria region, I encourage everyone to attend the 2018 Seymour Alternative Farming Expo and celebrate the proud lifestyle that is country Australia. I have a natural affinity for the rural lifestyle, having grown up in Romsey and just recently moved into
my family home on a property in Lancefield. I understand the importance and value of connecting with the natural environment and close-knit communities. The country lifestyle is among the top reasons why people enjoy living in areas that surround towns such as Seymour, Bendigo, Wangaratta and Shepparton. I will have a stall at the Seymour expo and invite constituents to drop by and discuss concerns or ideas of how I can better represent them and their country lifestyle in parliament. I think it is important we work together to preserve our heritage and educate others on the importance of maintaining robust rural and regional ways of living.
MLC Daniel Young willl be at the Seymour Expo, site EB26.

Classic design without the fuss Post N Rail can help you create a classic entrance by replicating the look of a timber fence without the maintenance issues.
Concrete post and rail fences offer a classic timber look without the maintenance.
The family-owned Echuca business will again have a selection of fences and a full range of colour options on display at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Made using high-strength concrete and reinforced with steel, the posts and rails have an authentic timber grain on all sides that could impress even the most eagle eye. Owners Steve and Melinda Jones have been in business for 13 years. Mr Jones said the single, two and three-rail designs were most popular for creating entrances and attractive fences. “Often our customers are choosing the option of a concrete post-and-rail fence to replace a fence lost to white ants or fire,” Mr Jones said.

Kubota machinery on show Bertoli Farm Machinery!—!based in Shepparton, Albury and Benalla!—!will have a large display of Kubota machinery at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Visitors can see the newly introduced Kubota SVL75–2 compact track loader, as well as the anticipated Kubota SSV skid steer loader range now with pilot control or ISO joystick operation. “Kubota construction equipment has been very well accepted in the Goulburn Valley,” Bertoli’s managing director Paul Bertoli said. The new SVL75–2 compact track loader is a nimble machine that now comes with a high flow option of 110!litres per minute to run hydraulic-driven attachments like trenchers, sweepers and augers. This makes these 75 horsepower
machines even more versatile than the previous model. Enhancements have also been done to the control levers of the machines for the easiest fine tuning of oil flows from the new multi-function lever. An SVL 95 is also in the range. “Demand for this type of machine has been very strong and continues to grow,” Mr Bertoli said. Two years ago Kubota released its first ever skid steer loader to the Australian market, with the SSV65 and SSV75 models featuring a large operator cab and hand and foot controls to operate the machine. Simple meat curing anytime, anywhere Until recently salami-making was like winemaking, with only a certain time of year suitable for production, but a new product on the market allows for cured meat production year-round. The innovative CLEAVER Salumi Cabinets recreate the ideal natural conditions for dry-curing meat, allowing for small to medium-scale batches to be made with any type of meat and at any time of year. “Traditionally, meat curing is done in winter for two–three months of the year as the temperature is too high before and the humidity is too low after,” CLEAVER Salumi Cabinets founder and business co-owner Dave Cann said.
CLEAVER Salumi Cabinets recreate the ideal natural conditions for dry-curing meat year-round.
“People would have a salami weekend once a year during these conditions, where everyone gets together and makes several hundred kilograms of cured meats, but many people today want to be curing year-round!—!to try out their new recipes and meats as they have them, and in much smaller batches.”
cabinets have been popular with everyone from individuals with a love for cooking, to farmers or hunters who have access to regular meat, to cafes or restaurants wanting to cure their own meats. “The cabinets are hugely accessible to anyone with an interest in meat curing, with our small unit fitting eight prosciutto in it at one time and costing around $1750, while the larger unit fits up to 16 prosciutto in it and retails at just under $3000,” Mr Cann said. “There is an outlay but it is nowhere near the typical cost, with the large-scale commercial ones on the market costing between 10–20 grand a unit.”
Since being launched last July, the

Highest quality onsite sewage treatment FujiClean Australia develops and manufactures onsite wastewater treatment systems. The most popular model, the CE-1500EX, is a residential onsite sewage treatment unit designed for Australian homes with no access to council sewerage infrastructure. “The CE-1500EX can handle all wastewater from the kitchen, laundry, bathroom and toilet,” FujiClean Australia sales manager Jacob O’Neill said. “Capable of servicing up to a five-bedroom home, the CE-1500EX has a maximum treatment capacity of 1500!litres per day!—!or 10 equivalent persons.” To achieve high-quality treatment, FujiClean uses natural biological processes!—!anaerobic and aerobic bacteria!—!to digest the waste and clarify the water. This process is known as contact media filtration.
FujiClean has designed the CE-1500EX as a single compact unit with low energy consumption and is approved for use in all states of Australia. Mr O’Neill said the CE-1500EX boasted cost savings at each stage, including a packaged and lightweight system to reduce transport and add-on costs; a simplified installation process to reduce labour costs; and a reliable treatment process to reduce the risk of system failure. He said the CE-1500EX was also backed by an industrystandard warranty, with 15 years for a structural tank and two years for the electrical components. If you are in the process of building a new home or your system needs upgrading, come and speak with the FujiClean team at site EB48.

Energyefficient solutions Glynncorp Electrical will be at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo to advise on sustainable energy management and energy-efficient solutions for farm, home and business. Off-grid solar power systems are not connected to the electricity supply grid and individual systems are formulated to meet the demands of the property. This is achieved by designing the system to cover all conceivable uses of power for homes, sheds and pumping, with a battery back-up system in place to store the renewable energy and a generator on automatic standby for extreme loads or states of low battery charge. Another option is hydrogen fuel cell technology which is considered a clean alternative. Hydrogen is produced on-site and can be stored long or short-term and converted to electricity when required with zero pollution. Fuel cells have almost no moving parts and generate power via an electrochemical process. Therefore they are inherently reliable and quiet. Hydrogen technology offers ease of use and onsite clean power generation, creating a low-carbon environment for a sustainable future.
John Cochrane is the owner of Glynncorp Electrical, which specialises in energy efficient solutions. Solar pumping is increasing in popularity and suits irrigation reticulation, centre-pivot irrigation, lateral irrigators including three-phase flood/surface irrigation pumping, sub-surface irrigation and sprinklers. The installation of solar power photovoltaic (PV) modules to supply motors/pumps can be designed for new services or retrofitted to

existing installations. Commercial solar installations for businesses have a great return on investment as the renewable energy is used directly and can reduce electricity bills significantly. Head along to sites T23 and T24 to learn more about Glynncorp Electrical’s energy-efficient solutions.

Weed Gunnel’s permeable and degradable weed-blocking fabrics boost the growth of plants.
Ingenious solution for eliminating weeds As parents of a then one-year-old baby, Chris and Nita Minogue found inspiration from their child’s nappies to solve a problem in the agricultural field. They launched their business Weed Gunnel 17 years ago, offering permeable and degradable weed-blocking fabrics that boost the growth of plants through preventing or hindering the growth of weeds"—"thanks to the fabric’s clever filtration of water and light. “We knew for years that while the normal woven weed mats on the market stop weed growth, they also kill the soil underneath as they don’t allow any air and moisture to reach the soil"—"so we created a product that blocks out the light (which causes the weed growth) but lets the rain pass through to the soil to keep it healthy,” Mr Minogue said. “As one side of the nappies lets the water pass through, this is where the idea for the fabric arose, and we developed it further and found a company to manufacture the fabrics as we required.”
Weed Gunnel is used by the agricultural industry, organic growers, landscapers, home gardeners and for revegetation projects and is renowned for its success as a first-grade, organic-registered weed control mat. There are two matting options to choose from: the traditional black weed mat and the Horticultural Fleece which is a white non-woven polypropylene material designed to aid in protection from insect and weather damage.
After selling other manufacturers’ yards for more than 10 years, VTR decided to design its own line using quality Australian steel with the aim of making stock handling safer and easier. VTR has a large range available for sheep, cattle, goats and horses with force tubs and loading ramps, all fully sheeted for operator safety. The heavy-duty cattle crush features attention to strength, reliable locking mechanisms and most of all offers safety for the operator and the animal. Striving to keep prices down, VTR’s product is made from premium Australian steel with the tensile strength and quality galvanising imported products often lack. VTR also stocks a more affordable range for the hobby and out-block farmer. VTR not only builds its yards with safety e in mind but even has an adjustable cattle

Clipex will be showing a range of automated cattle and sheep handling gear at this year’s Seymour expo.
Kudos to Clipex cattle yards Clipex Fencing and Stockyards is delivering real results to farmers with its impressive range of cattle yards and crushes. “We’ve spent a lot of time and investment in research and development and we’re starting to see it pay off when it comes to cattle handling done safer, easier and faster, Clipex chief operating officer Stafford Olsson said. This year at Seymour, Clipex will be showing a range of automated cattle and sheep handling gear, reminding visitors just how far the agricultural industry has come. Nick Cobcroft from Young in NSW provides a testament to just how easy cattle handling can be with a set of Clipex cattle yards. “We run primarily a grazing operation with fat lambs and beef cattle and originally had a set of cattle yards that were pretty ordinary and an OWS disaster, Mr Cobcroft said. “If we were doing cattle work, it was a tough chore. It took a lot longer to process cattle and was hard work.
After speaking with the Clipex team, and seeing Clipex at Agquip, Mr Cobcroft decided to give automated cattle handling a go. “Once we had set up the auto draft, steers ran through in about a third of the time compared with the old yards, he said. “It’s a lot quicker and a lot easier. No-one’s in a position where they would get hurt because they’re having to get in and push cattle. “I like the design, I like the team and the quality of the workmanship is great. The U-shape race makes cattle flow really well and the auto draft works an absolute treat. It is also easy to catch cows in the head bail, so it’s been a great system. “If anyone is looking to purchase yards definitely come to Clipex to have a look. For more information visit Clipex at site at B1-B2.

Nothing small about their service When Ferne King and Chris Wenben started their business Tiny Footprint last year it was about more than just building tiny homes. The two women worked together on solutions for complex business problems and both dreamed of turning their energies to something more personal. “Primarily Chris and I are both wanting to live a more meaningful existence and provide a service that was more meaningful to people,” Ms King said. “For us it’s helping people realise a dream while creating a smaller footprint.” Combining experience in designing and building houses, project management and a network of family and friends in the building trade, Ms King said they could create structures that were kinder to the environment and enabled people to live with a smaller footprint. Tiny Footprint offers clients support in creating their dream tiny home from beginning to end, with support at each step of the concept/dream stage, right through to physical design, construction and decoration. Support is provided until completion, including the fit-out of water tanks, solar panels and other elements at the tiny home’s final location. With greater awareness about tiny homes,
Ms King said interest and demand was incrementally increasing across all builders and DIY people involved in tiny houses. “The increase in interest and inquiries in this new industry over the past 12 months has been significant. The network of current builders, new builders and DYI people is a very open and supportive experience versus a competitive one seen in many other industries,” she said. “As people start seeing and hearing about ‘tinies’, it just grows that awareness and interest.” The Tiny Footprint team will showcase its most recently completed tiny house at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, giving people the opportunity to see a completed tiny home. They will also showcase the design of their next build for a woman in her 80s. The business also welcomes two cohosts to its site, with tiny house building company Tiny Houses 2 Go explaining its approach to building tiny homes, and a not-for-profit group that has held a number of information and engagement forums regarding tiny house home solutions. Visit the Tiny Footprint team at site T63 to T66.

Free-range chooks made easy After managing a large-scale farm with poultry, cattle and cropping, Peter Wemyss became aware of a niche industry for small chicken sheds. Mr Wemyss and wife Rosemary launched Edd’s Moveable Chook Sheds two years ago and the products have flourished"—"featuring a simplicity in design that provides ease of movement and great conditions for chickens. There are two shed sizes, one for up to 30 birds and the other for up to 70 birds, with the smallest moveable by hand and the other by an ATV or ute"—"and both featuring a galvanised trailer base and floor. This makes them ideal for a small acreage farm as they can fit through a 2.4"m-wide gate and can be moved around as needed. The chook sheds are constructed from cool-room panels to keep the birds warm in winter and cool in summer,
and these ideal conditions lead chickens to create great-tasting free-range eggs. “When I finished up working on that farm I noticed a real market for smaller chicken sheds, with people looking to keep a few birds for their own eggs or to earn a bit of extra pocket money,” Mr Wemyss said. “There are so many properties around the Geelong area (where the business is based) and out Seymour way that are ideal for these chook sheds, as they are two to 10 acre properties in subdivisions with enough room for up to 30 to 70 chickens. “They also have their new design Rollaway Nest boxes fitted to the moveable chook sheds, with no hinges or catches to deal with, just a simple lift-up tarp

ARE YOU FIRE READY?
How well are you prepared for Bushfire?
Living in Victoria means living in one of the highest fire danger areas in the world. Fire is a natural part of the Australian environment but fires don’t have to result in death. We can plan to live. Knowing how to prepare yourself and your property for fire is a must and CFA have a number of free community education programs available that cater for various levels of interest, from Community Fireguard (highest level), Bushfire Planning Workshops (mid level) through to FireReady Victoria meetings (lowest level) etc. Many Victorians have taken advantage of these programs to develop plans that will minimise the impact of fires on their property and protect the lives of their families. For more information on these programs visit the CFA stand at the Expo or visit the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au/planprepare
Home fires can occur at any time of the year and in many cases result in precious lives lost. Many of these fatalities could have been prevented if the home was suitably fitted with a working smoke alarm. While you are asleep your sense of smell is greatly reduced and this is one of the vital senses that can alert you to a fire in the home early enough to allow time to escape. A working smoke alarm takes the place
of your nose while you are asleep and the instant it detects smoke particles in the air it activates, waking you and your family. But it’s not just the battery we need to check! Smoke alarms have a 10 year life span. The components that monitor the air inside your smoke detector deteriorate over time and lose their sensitivity, therefore reducing its ability to alert you to a fire in your home.
Fire Danger Ratings tell you how bad a fire would be if one started. As part of your plan, you need to decide which rating is your trigger to leave early.
Fire safety and farming activities VicEmergency App T gett notifications To tifi ti off incidents i id t on your smart phone including weather warnings etc. you can download the VicEmergency App from the App Store or Google Play, from there you can set up a “watchzone” and set your notification preferences. If you’re unsure on how to set up the VicEmergency App on your phone or just want to find out more about how it works, talk to one of our tech savy members on the CFA stand at the expo.
All smoke alarms should have a date of manufacture on the back of them, even hard wired smoke alarms. This should be checked and if the unit is 10 0 or more years old then it should be replaced. Hard wired units should be replaced by a licenced electrician. For more information on smoke alarms, come and see us at the CFA stand at the Expo or check out the CFA web site www.cfa.vic.gov.au
EVERY Y year fires are started by machinery operating in dry grass and crops on elevated fire danger days. This can vary from Grain Harvesting machinery, hay bailers, slasher’s right down to the common ride-on or push mower. In a joint initiative between CFA and the Victorian V Farmers Federation the V Voluntary Grain Harvesting Guide was created and is now used across most parts of the state. While the name advocates that it is for grain harvesting, the guide can be applied to all agricultural work including contract slashing where there is a risk of starting a fire. For more information on the Voluntary Grain Harvesting Guide or to pick up your copy, come and see us at the CFA stand at the Expo or check out the CFA web site www.cfa.vic.gov.au
VicEmergency Hotline replaces VBIL
The Victorian Bushfire Information line has now changed to the VicEmergency Hotline and has a new number 1800 226 226. The new VicEmergency Hotline has been created for warnings, preparedness and recovery information, planned burns and more. The new hotline will replace the existing Victoria Bushfire Information Line (VBIL), SES Information Line, Victorian Emergency Recovery Information Line, and others from DEDJTR and DELWP. Streamlining all numbers to one consistent number will help ensure the community have timely access to information before, during and after emergencies. All existing phones lines will still remain active for a period of time but will simply forward to the new VicEmergency Hotline.

Swim into a carefree summer There is nothing more refreshing than having a swim on a hot summer day, and when it comes to pools, the staff at Swim Inn Pool Shop are the experts. Serving the Goulburn Valley, the Kyabram-based business is making its sixth appearance at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Managing director Brendan Bruhn said Swim Inn Pool Shop was born from a desire to provide customers with the highest standard of quality service throughout the process of the build and also after their swimming pool was completed. Today, it is a one-stop shop for all pool needs from installation to restoration, with a reputation for its knowledgeable staff and service. “We install fibreglass pools and we also do in-ground liner restorations,” Mr Bruhn said. “We also sell and install above-ground pools. We have a service division that services all areas.” Mr Bruhn said Swim Inn Pool Shop only sold trusted products from companies that backed what they made. This includes MagnaPool, the only
mineral system on the market that is completely salt-free. Mr Bruhn said from the very first time someone jumped into a MagnaPool they could feel the difference. “The water has a gentle, silky feeling against your skin,” he said. “There is no irritation to your eyes and your hair won’t need washing to get rid of that chlorine smell or sticky salt feeling associated with chlorine and saltwater pools. “As well as these benefits, your pool will always be crystal clear and extremely easy to maintain.” When it comes to fibreglass pools, Swim Inn Pool Shop trusts Aqua Technics.
The Swim Inn Pool Shop site is a popular one, and 2018 is the business’ sixth time at the Seymour Expo. Colour Guard which offers the end user with a lifetime guarantee that the colour will not fade. “No other company can offer this same guarantee.”
“They have a strong reputation for a high quality product and they back this by offering a marketleading lifetime structural warranty,” Mr Bruhn said.
Swim Inn Pool Shop is one of the few companies in country Victoria that has the expertise to carry out an in-ground vinyl liner renovation on an existing pool, regardless of where the customer originally purchased it.
“They also have a patented product on all of their shells called Pool
Mr Bruhn has 20 years of experience in restorations.
“We only use ABGAL liners with our renovations, as once again ABGAL are a family-owned business and deal only with high quality materials therefore giving the end user peace of mind for many years to come,” he said. Swim Inn Pool Shop has also been selling Maytronics Dolphin Supreme Robotic Cleaners for more than five years, installing the flagship M400 wall-climbing robot on almost every single pool it has sold. Transform your gates Imagine that from the comfort of your vehicle, you can press a button on your remote control and your gate opens as you drive through. SUN-POWER Auto Gates can offer this experience, as the business can turn normal gates into remote-controlled ones. The business stocks a full range of Australian-made and imported automatic gate openers, to suit single and double swing gates and sliding gates, in solar and electric models. There are two options for these products; save some money by installing it yourself, or SUN-POWER Auto Gates can provide details for one of its local installers to do so. “Maybe you’re the sort of person that would like to save a few dollars and have the satisfaction of installing your automatic gate operator yourself,” Marty and Paul Ryan said. “If you’re a little bit handy, you’ll find the installation process quite simple; get your doit-yourself gate automation
installation kit from SUNPOWER Auto Gates. “Our gate operators are certified Australian-made and proudly built in Victoria. “If you don’t have the time, you could pay someone to come and install your automatic gate operator for you. There’s nothing wrong with farming the job out to someone else to install it.”
