“We had reached a point where we needed to grow, the brand was growing rapidly and our business has also grown quickly in the last 10 years,” he said. “Ten years sounds like a long time, but it’s not when you’re talking about all the things that come with growing a business. “The biggest one for us was the workshop — we wanted to make sure we were capable for the next 20 years.” BMW’s head of network strategy and development Alexander Brockhoff called the Shepparton dealership “state-of-the-art”. “The principles behind the updated dealership design across the BMW and MINI brands are more than just a visual refresh,” he said.

“WE’RE LOOKING TO THE FUTURE.” The first in Australia to adopt BMW’s new corporate identity and third in the world, the new Shepparton BMW and MINI Garage premises at 7969 Goulburn Valley Hwy, Kialla, is an environmentally friendly showstopper. With 30 years in the Goulburn Valley, the BMW expansion came at just the right time, according to dealer principal and director Aaron Brain.

“They will include a more flexible format with multifunctional areas, shared and open spaces, as well as the integration of digital touchpoints.” In “lengthy discussions” with Germany and BMW before making the move, Mr Brain said there was a question on everyone’s mind: what would it look like? A sprawling floorspace with a sleek modern design — complete with polished concrete, LEDs highlighting the shining vehicles and interactive displays — the building is every car fanatic’s dream. coffee on offer is simply a bonus for those making the rounds. “The idea of what we’ve just built here is that when you walk in it should be like a five-star hotel — you come in, you’ll be greeted in the way that you should expect,” Mr Brain said. “Having the new corporate identity when you walk in is about the feel for the customer that when you do walk in it feels like home. It’s inviting and warm.” BMW as a whole is shifting its model to one with sustainability always in its sights. Since 2020, BMW has committed to supplying its sites worldwide with exclusively renewable energy sources. The new building is built on the brand’s sustainability model, home to 45,000 litres of water tanks for its premium car washing services, along with a 100-kilowatt solar system to generate its own power and charging the electric vehicles. “BMW are very proactive in making sure that they don’t just build one electric car, but get a whole suite of them,” Mr Brain said. “That’s why we’ve built this — sustainability is massive for us.”

“We obviously benefit from the locals supporting us, so we very much support local,” he said. The dealership has now adopted a self-sustainable business model to align itself with the brand. The team is also bringing the MINI brand to the Goulburn Valley. “MINI is really exciting,” Mr Brain said. “It’s a diverse brand with lots of personality.” For Mr Brain, it’s all about putting the customer first, in the most innovative way possible. Premium workshop for premium vehicles

HIDDEN AT THE BACK OF SHEPPARTON BMW’S SHINY NEW SHOWROOM IS THE SPACIOUS WORKSHOP. It’s over three times the size of the previous workshop space, capable of servicing up to 40 cars per day. With 11 bays for vehicles and including a dedicated Renault section, and a five-tonne four-post wheel aligning machine, dealer principal Aaron Brain said it was a huge upgrade. “We completely outgrew our workshop we used to have,” he said. “This is less congested, and we actually have enough space to meet the demand.” The new space is what attracted Shepparton BMW workshop controller Adam Hinkley to the dealership. With a long history working for BMW dealerships across the country, he said the Shepparton dealership’s workshop was state-of-the-art. “When you drive down the highway, the building is pretty hard to miss,” Mr Hinkley said. “This is definitely one of the best workshops I’ve ever worked in.” Mr Hinkley is a qualified master technician, the highest mechanic qualification in the business.

“Every new product that comes out has new systems, new technology,” he said. “The brand just keeps growing and evolving, and technicians continue to learn.” Mr Hinkley said the addition of electric vehicles to the fleet had posed extra challenges. While mechanically they are similar, the added dangers of electricity wasn’t dealt with lightly. “Training is a really big part of staying safe,” he said. “You’ve got 10,000 volts running around the vehicle and you’ve got to be really careful with how you handle it.” Along with every piece of equipment needed to service premium BMWs, the workshop is designed to be as comfortable and clean for employees as possible. There’s built-in heating and cooling, and regular cleaning to keep the space pristine. Mr Brain said the new workshop means the team can service a much larger number of cars than ever before.

“We can wash up to 50 cars a day in our new space.”

Along with the automated car wash machine, the new space has a dedicated car wash bay and an upgraded detailing garage. “We did have a single car detailing space at the old dealership, but now we have space for three,” Mr Brain said.

To support the new facilities, Shepparton BMW installed a 45,000 litre water storage system at the new building in order to capture as much rainwater as possible. “We’re using our own water to wash our own cars,” Mr Brain said. “It’s part of BMW’s sustainability model.” Contact Shepparton BMW to inquire about detailing packages today.

ELEVEN YEARS AT BMW HAS TAUGHT GLEN HENDERSON ALL HE NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THE LUXURY BRAND. As the service manager, his job is to ensure the premium experience of purchasing a BMW or MINI follows through to the customer’s servicing experience.

THERE’S A LOT MORE THAT GOES INTO SERVICING A BMW THAN JUST CHECKING THE ENGINE, ACCORDING TO SHEPPARTON BMW’S LEAD TECHNICIAN TIM SMITH.

“I try to ensure all the customers are happy and looked after,” he said. “The quality of service we need to provide because of the products we have and the expectations from customers — we have to go above and beyond.” Mr Henderson said the move to the new dealership space made it even easier to deliver the best service as possible to BMW and MINI customers. “The improvement in functionality alone is astronomical,” he said. “We’ve got much more free space, we can service more cars at the same time and we’ve got state-ofthe art equipment.” The new premises means

Mr Henderson said inclusions like using premium oil, brake disk and brake pad services ensure all vehicles continue running to their highest potential. “We offer service packages for three, five, or even up to 10 years. “The added security of not having to stress about the next service makes the driving experience all the better.”

As the company moves towards more electric vehicles, Mr Smith said the technicians become more and more specialised.

Every BMW technician is trained specifically to service, diagnose and repair BMW cars. “Every BMW technician is trained by specialists,” Mr Smith said.

“I’ve always been a piston and cranks mechanic,” he said.

“It’s hundreds of hours of training to handle the diagnostic equipment.” Mr Smith started as an apprentice with BMW almost nine years ago, and has since become a senior technician. He’s now working towards becoming a master technician. “Our updating of knowledge never ends, so the job never gets stale.”

“But the more I’ve been dealing with them [electric cars], I’m getting really excited.” Each car that’s ordered into the dealership gets a once over by the diagnostic team. “We make sure every car is perfect before it leaves the dealership,” Mr Smith said.
