ST GEORGES ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL

Art makes us smart Students are ready to take to the stage for the annual St Georges Road Primary School Education Week concert. The school’s performing arts, multimedia and visual arts programs have joined forces, with students busily preparing all term. Principal Dougie Souter said this year’s concert was called Art Makes Us Smart.

“The kids have a large voice in the choreography, the costumes and the themes,” Ms Souter said. “There are about 11 items that will take place throughout the concert — that involves storytelling and book illustrations, beat and rhythm, different types of singing, the evolution of dance and then there is some drama as well.” Ms Souter said this year’s theme was an

important one for the multicultural school. “Art speaks all languages,” she said. “The concert opens up a different perspective of what learning is for parents and they can see how the arts are a really important part of the whole development of a child. “There’s lots of problem solving, lots of creative thinking and lots of use of technology.”

During Education Week the students will also take part in National Simultaneous Reading Day and a multicultural arts display. “We’ll be putting all of the craft and art work from our school community on display,” Ms Souter said. “Each teacher will do a tour of the display throughout the week, too, so everyone gets to have a really good look at it.”

What an exciting time for our region Our Shepparton Education Plan has received $20.5 million to kick-start our new, better-resourced super secondary school and create an integrated children’s centre in Mooroopna. This is part of a broader educational blueprint for change developed right here in our community to pave the way for improved education and employment opportunities for our young people. Now that’s underway, we’ll be looking at what we can do in the primary and early years to capitalise on our local teaching talent and give our kids the best possible start to life. This is about our young people and our community, so please get involved and have your views heard.
