PREPS 2022
Welcome to our new Preps With a hop, skip and a jump another bunch of five and six-year-olds have commenced their education. There’s been lots of preparation leading up to this moment — visits to the school, getting the uniform and trying it on numerous times, organising the school bag and lunch box and practising reading. As well many conversations with mum, dad, aunties, uncles, grandparents or carers about starting ‘big school’. Similarly, there’s been just as much groundwork happening at the schools — teachers decorating classrooms, planning lessons, memorising the new students’ names — all with the aim to ensure an easy transition for their new charges. And the schools are now buzzing again with bright-eyed students scrambling over play equipment, running around on nervous energy, or moving with trepidation while
exploring this place called school — a new place that will soon become as comfortable as home. Also, with the start of every school year, The News team begins to organise the annual Prep feature. Calls are made to the school receptionists, who help with booking a convenient time for The News to take the class photos. Once the schedule is ready the work begins, and the photographer hits the road. This year News photographer Megan Fisher was given the task. Over a period of four weeks, Megan visited 40 schools and photographed about 1000 students. And she still had a smile on her face when she completed the job. Preps 2022 is a keepsake to be enjoyed by students, parents and grandparents alike. To all the new Preps, The News wishes you all the best as you begin your formal education.

Families who read together, learn together A key motivation for children to read comes from parents and carers, says Primary English Teaching Association Australia. PETAA is a national, not-for-profit professional association that has supported primary school educators in teaching and learning English and literacies for the past 50 years. Providing a comfortable, safe and secure place for parents and children to share a book makes the child feel special. It fosters the idea that reading is pleasurable, which is transferred to other reading encounters. There are many benefits from reading for 10 minutes a day with children. These include: • Relationship building: At the core of reading is a relationship and its bond between child and parent or carer. • Children’s reading improves: PETAA reports the research is

conclusive. When parents/carers support children’s literacy learning from an early age, everyone benefits. Outcomes for children improve when parents/carers and teachers work together. • Children’s self-esteem improves: When a child is shown undivided attention around a book it makes a significance difference to how students identify themselves as learners and readers. Children respond positively when parents show an interest in their learning. • Reading unites families through shared stories: Stories can form a common ground for communicating when a family reads together. Stories help students make sense of where they fit in the world and bind families. Find out more about PETAA at: https://www.petaa.edu.au/

Learning for our
FUTURE Undera Primary School provides an aesthetically attractive setting for students to learn and play. We have an amazing new playground and expansive areas for students to be active learners. All students are offered a high quality education with a focus on developing both academic and social/emotional skills. Through the explicit teaching of the Respectful

The Schools Plus grant enables us to provide free education for the next 4 years for all students including all stationery, iPads and laptops, camps and excursions, school uniforms and our annual swimming program. Our school works closely with Undera Kindergarten to offer students a smooth transition from preschool to school.
