‘‘We take a lot of pride in our gym; presentation and cleanliness is a huge priority of ours,’’ Fitnow! fitness instructor Lawrance Warren said. Fitnow! is always welcoming new members and the staff are happy to help you and answer your questions.

An avid gym goer since she was 19, she quickly realised her passion for fitness and decided to get her PT qualifications so she could ‘‘help others do what she did’’. ‘‘For me, the gym is so much more than a place to go and work on your body to ‘look good’,’’ she said. ‘‘The gym not only has many physical benefits, but is also extremely important for our health and quality of life.
‘‘I work closely and more specifically with disability clients, on a social and recreational level, with my sessions,’’ he said.
‘‘It can have a huge impact on our mental health and can become a place where you can go to prioritise yourself — we all need to make time in our week to put ourselves first.’’
‘‘I am so glad that I am able to help people through my job, and I find it very rewarding that I can make a difference in their lives.’’
Monique specialises in strength training, lifting techniques, weight loss, muscle hypertrophy, flexibility and mobility and motivation.
Lawrance said his only goal is to help his clients become the best version of themselves.
Nathan Moore
He currently has slots available for new clients.
He fell in love with the sport and all the fitness training that came with it. This led him to open his own business where he coached a range of players for competition and for fitness. During this time he studied a Certificate III and IV in Fitness to help broaden his understanding in the fitness industry. From there he became a personal trainer in a local gym, where his passion for helping people achieve their goals really solidified. ‘‘I love helping motivate people to achieve their goals whether it be for weight loss, a challenge or mental health,’’ he said. Ready for a new challenge, Nathan enlisted in the Australian Army where he was asked to represent his unit for fitness challenges in the brigade and to plan and organise fitness sessions. If you are interested in personal training, or just want to learn the basics of the gym and proper technique, don’t hesitate to reach out to Nathan by emailing nat_moore4@hotmail.com or phone 0403 513 369. Brittany Kirby Brittany is the resident physio at Fitnow!
Nathan’s life has always involved fitness. As a junior he competed at a high level in tennis where he was ranked in the top 200 nationally.
Returning to Deniliquin five years ago, she has been working as the sole practitioner physiotherapist for Deniliquin Health Service. This included

Before her return she completed a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of Ballarat, where she decided physiotherapy was her calling and moved to Adelaide to complete her Masters of Physiotherapy at Flinders University. Brittany has worked in both public and private health. She worked in the fields of orthopaedics, general surgery, oncology and rehabilitation at St John of God in Ballarat, and has also worked privately in Horsham focusing more on musculoskeletal conditions, pain management and return to sport. She has also worked with both country and state football clubs in Victoria and South Australia. Brittany’s clinic is based at Fitnow! and provides services for musculoskeletal conditions, post-surgical management and rehabilitation, pain management and education, post-natal education and return to exercise, just to name a few. ALL STARS MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY Not even COVID-19 can stop Murray Riverina All Stars Martial Arts students. This year the All Stars Martial Arts Academy – Murray Riverina Region Deniliquin and Finley dojos added a sparring class to the timetable to complement karate training. ‘‘Sparring is a form of training where students make the motions of boxing, kickboxing or Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), without landing heavy blows, to develop skills for either competition or real-life defence situations,’’ Shihan (head of school) Daniel Zrajko said. ‘‘We are planning on hosting our own fight nights in the dojo this year as a fun sporting activity for our more competitive students to participate in. ‘‘We have a boxing ring already set up in the dojo and will invite spectators to watch these events also.’’ And while the gym has been truly bustling this year as COVID restrictions eased, dojo students had a 2021 worth boasting about. During COVID travel restrictions late last year, All Stars Martial Arts Academy Finley and Deniliquin dojos hosted the first ever martial arts gradings over Zoom video conferencing. Students from the Southern Riverina towns would normally travel to the national All Stars Head Office Dojo in East Bentleigh, Melbourne, to be tested and graded to achieve a new rank.
In normal conditions prior to COVID, hundreds of karate students would attend the gradings.

BLIGHTY FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB
With a focus on rebuilding and regenerating in 2022, the focus at Blighty Football Netball Club in 2022 is developing skills, fitness, sportsmanship, social skills, friendships, loyalty and teamwork in a supportive, professional and positive environment. Netball Club president Jodi Brown said every week, as a club, Blighty strives to provide the best possible sporting experience for all of their players, officials, volunteers and families. The junior netball sides were filled before the start of the Picola and District season, but the Redeyes are always hunting for more dedicated senior players. Kristeen Culton will be vice president in 2022, and Kelly Nicholls has taken on the role of secretary/treasurer.
Netball coaches in 2022: A grade - Meagan Lowry returns to the position for another season. Her natural application and passion to the game makes her a big asset to our senior teams. Under 17s - Judy Plattfuss is a valued role model in the club and brings a wealth of knowledge. She is selfmotivated, dedicated, and loyal, and her leadership and commitment will ensure the under 17s have a year of growth and development. Under 15s - Bridie Blake is an all-rounder. She has an eagerness to learn and takes on this role to embrace her skills and leadership abilities. With her strong game play and umpiring background she will guide these juniors.
Under 13s - Lillie Harford brings all the necessary qualities to the coaching role. Her ability to direct and read the game will provide an environment of inclusiveness and teamwork. Under 11s - Erica Nicholls and Stevie Bateman both have a passion for the game, and have each developed strong skill sets on and off the courts. They have embraced the role undertaking relevant courses and planning sessions to provide our future juniors a solid foundation in the game. Leading the football contingent is returned president Al Nicholls, whose aim is to look to strength after a difficult season for the seniors. Assisting Nicholls will be vice president Leigh Culton, secretary Mel Dudley and treasurer Sarah Macdonald. An exciting new appointment of Kyel Bain has seniors coach has rallied players’ spirits and encouraged a hopeful list of new and recommitting senior players to the side for 2022.
Football coaches in 2022: Seniors - Bain started playing junior footy with the Redeyes in 1994 and started his senior football career in 2003. He has played 300 PDFNL senior games, was Blighty reserves premiership coach season 2019 and Blighty thirds coach 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018. The executive are supported by 7 general committee members who are responsible for their own portfolio (Netball, Senior Football, Junior Football, Social, Finance, Grounds and Buildings).
Football Deniliquin Rovers is developing a robust senior side for 2022, led by 2021 Picola District Football League Coach of the Year Alex Hay. Hay brings a wealth of playing and leadership experience in his return as the Roos’ coach, and for him it starts from the top down. ‘‘From my perspective, I think that you have to be a good communicator and treat every player on their merits,’’ Hay said. ‘‘I’ve come across some interesting characters in my relatively short career. Managing the personalities can be difficult, but if you’re able to connect with the individual then you’re halfway there. ‘‘I know I’m a grand optimist, but I think getting a full list on the park with the additions of our juniors into full-time senior football, plus a couple of recruits will make a dramatic difference to the football that we are going to be able to produce.’’ And he has certainly succeeded, despite the challenge of player retention which has tested many clubs coming into 2022. Debutantes: Nick Sheldon (formerly Echuca), Jack O’Callaghan (formerly Echuca), James Falcone (Lancefield),
John Allitt (formerly Mathoura), Joe Hay (Ballina). Player retention between the junior grades to the senior grades is important for all clubs. Of the 15 top aged players from last year’s thirds group, the club has retained 12 in more senior ranks. Young stars Ray Murphy, Tom Blake, Haydn Mowat, Brock Redden and Jai Ezard are shaping up as promising senior players. Murphy won the best and fairest in the thirds last season and league Rising Star Award.
Netball Deniliquin Rovers netballers are going all-in this season. The senior Roos have put in intensive training sessions, with Brittany Kirby leading A grade. The team has been training together with Tim van Lieshout’s B side, pushing improvement in fitness, ball skills and teamwork.
Hay hopes to continue building a closeknit team.
The Rovers take a whole-club approach to success, with no netballer left behind. Succession through the levels of netball was the idea when placing past and present A grade players in charge of the under 15 and 17 sides.
‘‘Keeping local this year — whilst it has not been reflected in our win-loss record — the group staying consistent will see us going from strength to strength,’’ Hay said.
Kirby played for Deniliquin Rams as a junior before getting her start with the Rovers at 15. She was a member of the 2009 premiership A-grade team with Rovers.
‘‘The nucleus of a really strong team is there. Adding a few tweaks will be an exciting prospect heading into next season.
Despite being a hard and fast centre, Kirby is taking a step back as a nonplaying coach in the upcoming season, as part of her role in fostering the next generation of A-grade Roos. She says the key to making it all work is consistency. Kirby hopes a dedicated pre-season will lead the team to a premiership.
‘‘Every team sets up their season to have a run at finals and beyond and that’s certainly where my focus is, but for us it will be about reinforcing what we have been working towards the last 18 months.’’
Like in the football ranks, club succession is key on the courts.
Shayne Knuckey is once again coaching the fifths and has plenty of young footballers eager to play in the blue and the white.
Deniliquin Rovers netballers Sienna Jenkins, Abby Wills and Georgia McCulloch have all made the transition straight into A grade.
Pete Wills continues to coach our fourths side and teach young footballers the craft of the game. The Deni Rovers feel extremely lucky to have such a great coach, and his work can be seen filtering throughout the grades as the kids grow up.
Junior development remains a key focus for the netballers, with some new initiatives in 2022.
Chris Maher is a first-time coach and is coaching the thirds side this year. Chris, who was a dangerous forward in his playing days, is a smart footballer and has a wealth of knowledge. Although the thirds numbers are a little low this year, due to 15 players moving up a grade at once, Chris has a strong nucleus to work with.
Natalie Sampson, Carissa Holmberg, Chrissy Hurst, Nerisa Wills and Lucy Horne have signed on as coaches to boost engagement and the skills of the club’s youngest players. Netball coordinator Nicole Jenkins said the last two years have emphasised the need for more junior development, for the longevity of the club. ‘‘The main aim of it is that we’ve got those young and aspiring talented netballers,’’ she said.
Southern Riverina Sports 15
‘‘We’ve got the senior coaches that want to elevate them, working together with the junior coach. ‘‘That has worked really successfully in the last couple of years.’’ “Alex Glowrey and Cheryl Thommers are working together to coordinate and mentor young and aspiring netballers in 2022,” Jenkins said. “This is a continuation of our focus in inspiring and developing interested young netball umpires through umpiring clinics and one-on-one mentoring at the club. “Our club is also very supportive of players who wish to become badged. Without umpires, games are not possible. “We have made a concerted effort over recent years to foster the development of our umpires and value their contribution to the club.”

MATHOURA FOOTBALL & NETBALL CLUB
Despite a tumultuous off-season, Mathoura Football Netball Club is rebuilding and has entered the 2022 Picola & District Football Netball League season with a fresh committee, players and head football coach. The seniors come under the guidance of seniors coach Stan Gilday, a former Carlton-listed player and experienced coach. And stepping into the team are the graduating thirds side of 2021, who will carry the Timbercutters forward in 2022. “We will be a small, quick side and we have been training to use that to our advantage,” Gilday said.
The long, proud and legendary history of Mathoura FNC will continue into the 2022 season thanks to the support of the community and its wonderful volunteers. Be sure to get in touch if you want to lend a hand with the canteen, umpiring and scoring for football and netball, or anything else! The Timbercutters are also still welcoming any new football and netball players and supporters to be part of the club this year and have lots of exciting social events in the works. Mathoura will be taking part in the Easter Duck Race. The price is $5 for entry and $700 for first place.
“I think we will surprise a couple of clubs, who may not have been expecting us to field a side.”
Tickets will be available at the Mathoura Easter Saturday Fair in the gardens.
On the netball courts, Mathoura’s A grade side are once again looking very strong after narrowly missing finals last year.
Keep up to date with all the other social events being organised throughout the season by following Mathoura Football & Netball Club on Facebook.
“The girls have been working hard and there’s been a good turn out to preseason,” said coach Rita Howard.
A full bar and canteen will be available at all home games, with raffles, music and awards being announced.
“We’ve got the majority of the A and B grade squad back, so I think we can be strong contenders this season.”
Live AFL matches will also be played on the big screen in the club room.
The ‘Cutters will definitely be ones to watch for the 2022 season.

TOCUMWAL FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB
After the disruptions of the previous two years, Tocumwal Football Netball Club is looking forward to a much less disrupted 2022 season. As a club, Tocumwal has come out of COVID with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and purpose. Since the end of the 2021 season, the TFNC has worked to develop Clubmap – a program the committee and other club representatives went through to create a five-year strategic plan. The club’s vision over the next five years is to create a destination club based on its ‘‘unrivalled local reputation’’. This reputation is based on quality programs and development, efficient management, a strong family-based culture and our club’s long-standing commitment and contribution to the local community. The club’s focus over the next five years will be: Culture and club brand, junior pathways/participation growth, a strong football and netball program, committee structure and succession, business sustainability, and infrastructure and facilities. One of the big changes Tocumwal has made at the club is the development of many non-committee roles. If you want to get involved, but don’t want to join the committee, please reach out. The fulfillment of these roles will be vital to achieve our vision. The Bloods have also launched a new website - https://tocumwalfnc.com.au/. This website backs into Tocumwal’s
new database manager, which will automate many processes through the club, ensuring membership growth, and putting on sponsorships and events without creating a monster for the committee. For example, imagine entering the data from 400 pages of paper-based membership forms into an excel spreadsheet. In terms of new membership options, there are a range of playing and nonplaying options including ‘platinum’ for those looking to give a little extra to the club, and ‘stray Bloods’ for those who live away but still want to show their support.
The Bloods have two night games including the Anzac Day game, which will be a great opportunity to showcase the club’s new lights. Good Friday will also be a great day out, against Berrigan. It will be a great start to the season, and Tocumwal welcomes your support this year. Remember to follow the Bloods on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with the latest. Post your photos with #Bloods2022 so everyone can see all the great things happening around the club. Senior football coach: Kade Rowe. Assistant senior coach: Luke Congram.
A growing membership is vital for the club’s ongoing success. A club wellbeing team is also new to the club, with recruitment of three to six people interested in mental health and wellbeing underway. This reflects that sporting clubs have a greater role in the community than just organising game days. ‘‘We need to ensure we have support structures in the club that foster a healthy and active lifestyle while dealing with the pressures life throws at us,’’ the club said. ‘‘This team will be put through a training course and become the eyes, ears and heart of well-being and mental health in the club.’’ The playing season will be sprinkled with some special games for TFNC. Southern Riverina Sports 19
Senior captain: Jacob Hore. Vice captains: Joss Cardillo and Cory Parish. New senior recruits: Brock McCabe, Duane Brushy Haebich, Glen Dominick, Trent Osborn, Jordan Lavis. JERILDERIE FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB The Jerilderie Demons senior footballers have their eye on the prize this year.
says there are no significant signings on the horizon.
New change rooms and amenities were also included in the $750,000 refresh.
Football president Dean Knight said the Demons will be fighting hard for the 2022 Picola and District Football League flag after a solid 2021 showing.
Other football coaches this season: Reserves – Rob Marshall; thirds – Ben Neeson; fourths – Trevor Eldridge; Auskick – Cath Rorato and Dick Hercus.
The netball side has fielded all sides except an under 17s.
‘‘We’ll work on our fitness and helping our key position players reach toward that goal,’’ Knight said.
Junior development and mental health is also on the club’s mind.
Taking the reigns of the seniors again in 2022, Chris Marshall said the Demons are aiming as high as possible in a special year for the club, which will include a 10 year anniversary of senior and under 17s premierships flags. The seniors, reserves and thirds all finished in the top eight last season. The cancelled premiership rounds, however, robbed the Demons of their chance to take it all. With a fairly extensive list of Demons stalwarts remaining at the club, Knight
A number of under 14s will be taking part in the Giants Academy training sessions this season, to provide ‘‘a bit of progression towards the club’s future’’. The Demons are fielding firsts, reserves, under 17s and under 14s footy sides this season. Jerilderie netballers will enjoy its home games this year, after a refurbishment to its courts. A new-look Monash Netball Precinct will pay dividends for players, having undergone extensive renovations and grandstand upgrades since last season.
Ella Arnold was one of the Demons’ top performers in A-grade and claimed the best-and-fairest gong last season. Amy Perry starred in defence last season, while Keshia Marshall was one of the side’s dead-eye shooters in attack. Sports and Life Training (SALT) sessions are also being held across the region, to establish players’ connection to the way their physical and mental health intersect. Show your support for the Demons by becoming a member in 2022. Memberships gets you free entry to home games, and the opportunity to win cash in the draws held at the conclusion of each senior home game.
BERRIGAN FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB Get active, get involved and get social! That’s the message Berrigan Football Netball Club has for the 2022 season. The committee is always on the look out for volunteers to help with delivery of Saturday games and social endeavours. Like many clubs, Berrigan has had issues with player, volunteer and coach retention and recruitment after two COVID impacted years. In footy, a large batch of returning players should keep Berrigan in good stead for the Picola and District Football League season. Recommitting are Matt Heazlewood, Matthew Ross, Angus Coldwell, Connor Thornton, Kyle McQualter, Zeke Carruthers, Jake Dalgliesh, Toby
Dalgliesh, Fraser Haintz, Jake Beams, Harley Middleton and Adam Way. Haintz and Way were included in the league’s top 45 players list in 2021 and were key contributors to why the Saints finished sixth on the ladder before the season was cancelled. The Saints will be led in 2022 by co-coaches Justin Hoggan and Tim Cooper, with the latter returning to the senior role after a two-year stint in 2012 and 2013. Recruit Tristan Mears is an intimidating addition to the side. He is a 193cm power forward and has a knack for booting goals. On the courts, junior netball is as strong as ever but the club is looking for more senior players who are keen to give the sport a go. President Sophie Walsh said this has resulted in the club being able to field an A grade side this year. But it has also prompted a flexible approach to training. Walsh said sessions are held on Thursday evenings and everyone is welcome. If you can’t attend training and still want to play, the club wants you to get in contact. You can message Berrigan Football Netball Club’s Facebook page, email berriganfc@gmail.com, or phone Walsh directly on 0408 524 679. Southern Riverina Sports 21

DENILIQUIN NETBALL ASSOCIATION Following two years of next to no netball, Deniliquin Netball Association’s facilities are back in full use with an energetic vibe around the courts. President Angela Hussey heads up a new committee which was formed in early 2021, with a focus on increasing player numbers and driving the vision of becoming a ‘regional netball hub’. ‘‘Change can take time; however, we are really pleased with the progress in our first year,’’ she said. ‘‘We have five representative teams with players coming from Deniliquin, Hay, Finley and Yarrawonga, plus the re-introduction of an open grade to our weekly competition.’’ Next year, DNA expects to see more players from neighbouring towns compete in the Autumn Twilight Competition. That 2023 season will also include plans on expansion with a male competition, and gender-neutral uniforms. DNA also has a proud history of umpire development and will continue to focus on the long-term sustainability
of umpires within the area with a goal to create a succession pool that can be tapped into. The Umpire Mentor program has been popular, and DNA looks forward to watching participants becoming badged towards the end of the year.

DENILIQUIN DROVERS RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB The Deniliquin Drovers Rugby Union Football Club has gone into recess, but the club is not disappearing.
‘‘The important message is that we are only in recess, and the club is not folding,’’ Marshall said.
Following a ‘‘very difficult decision’’, club president Paul Marshall said a lack of player numbers due to COVID meant the club could not field a team in 2022.
‘‘We are financially strong, have a committed committee and playing group, and none of us want our club to disappear,’’ he said.
The Drovers were scheduled to compete in the Southern Inland Rugby Union League’s second grade, against teams from Hay, Wagga, Griffith, Albury and Tumut.
Marshall said some of Leeton’s home matches would be rescheduled for play at Deniliquin to accommodate the partnership.
Those who still wish to play will line up with the Leeton Phantoms Rugby Union Football Club, after an agreement was struck between the two clubs. Marshall expects “about 10 to 12” Drovers players to join Leeton in 2022. Training will continue to be held in Deniliquin throughout the season, with non-competition players invited to come along.
particularly in terms of introducing new players to rugby union. ‘‘The club has relied upon people (who already play rugby union) moving to the district to help field teams,’’ Marshall said.
Rounds nine and 18 — when Deni was meant to play Leeton — have become byes for Leeton. Mr Marshall said like many sporting clubs, the Drovers’ numbers had suffered due to COVID-19 restrictions. ‘‘Clubs as far away as Bendigo have reached out to us wanting to offer their club as somewhere our players could play, because they’re also struggling to fill their team,” Marshall said.
Club president Paul Marshall said it’s one way to keep rugby union alive locally.
‘‘Our goal is to rebuild this year, support our players who choose to play at Leeton, and come back stronger in 2023.’’
Training is held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm at Deniliquin Rotary Park.
Marshall said the committee is still finalising what those plans look like, Southern Riverina Sports 27
‘‘We’re currently working on those plans, though our aim is to continue to operate and train as per normal with our players playing for Leeton.’’ If you want to get involved, phone Marshall on 0429 815 360 or coach Mark Thompson on 0427 814 377.

DENILIQUIN PONY CLUB There are so many ways to get involved in the Deniliquin Pony Club. And with more than 60 years as a member club of Pony Club Australia, why wouldn’t you? The club, located in north Deniliquin, is a friendly and family-oriented club which teaches horse riding skills in a safe and nurturing environment in accordance with PCA (Victoria) guidelines.
The club proudly celebrated 60 years with PCA in 2019. Club membership is an opportunity to learn new skills and compete at equine events, and gives riders a chance to socialise. It also offers 24/7 access to the club’s facilities, so you can squeeze in riding around school or work. Those facilities include safe enclosed sand arenas, a show jumping arena,
a timbered cross country course, an enclosed round yard, annual camps, club rooms, 50 secure horse yards, and dual cemented wash down bays.
This vibrant event is open to club members and non-members with competitions in dressage, show jumping and cross country.
Juniors ride on the first Sunday of the month and adults on the second Sunday, unless there’s bad weather.
Last year, Deniliquin Pony Club held its first horse trials event since 2018 with huge success.
The club values inclusive learning and participation, with president Rachel Napier saying ‘‘you do not need the best pony with the flashiest equipment’’.
The club showed off some new facilities thanks to the help of volunteers, and attracted nearly 100 entrants — a great turnout in a COVID-affected year.
The Deniliquin Pony Club also hosts one major event each year.
The club relies on and values such volunteers enormously.
Horse riders from across Victoria and NSW travel to Deni to compete at the horse trials, held each June.
Even if you are not a current rider but have a passion for the sport, this is a wonderful way to stay involved.

Up to 60 players take to the court for an hour a week each Wednesday during the school term, and also meet for practice games and social events. For those wanting more, the club also hosts four tournaments a year and a monthly intertown competition, both of which are optional. RDA DENILIQUIN
Deniliquin’s Riding for People with Disabilities program has been running since 2015.
“You don’t need any experience, because we will teach you all you need to know,” he said.
Associated with Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia (RDAA), it is a voluntary, non-profit organisation providing opportunities for anyone with a disability to enjoy safe, healthy, stimulating and therapeutic horserelated activities.
“If you can make a cup of tea, you can be a volunteer.
The group meets every second Friday during the school term, at the Deniliquin Pony Club Grounds in Smart St. After the Easter break, sessions resume from Friday, April 29. Group president Luke Harrington said starting the program in Deniliquin was a personal decision. ‘‘Horses have done a lot for me personally and I wanted to share that with other people that might not have otherwise had the opportunity,’’ he said. ‘‘I can see the success the program is having with the riders and we desperately need more volunteers.” For every rider participating in the program, there needs to be three or four volunteers. And Harrington said with more volunteers, the program can be expanded to more people who may benefit from the outcomes.
“Those volunteers with some existing horse experience are usually placed as leaders, but we also need side walkers. “These are people who walk alongside the horse and rider and help with instructions, and provide balance assistance as required.” Volunteers to help set up for an hour on Friday mornings before sessions start would also be helpful. Harrington said another important aspect of the program is integration and socialisation – for the riders, their families and the volunteers alike. “RDA is not just about pony rides. “It’s about leaning life lessons, and of course there’s also the morning teas. “It is about being part of the community, assisting our disabled residents to become integrated and forging friendships while learning new skills. “The horses are just a medium in making that happen.” For more information about the program or for a session calendar, contact Harrington on 0427 138 100. FINLEY BOWLING CLUB The Finley Bowling Club offers a lot more than a chance to play sport. Though known for its excellent greens and regular tournaments, the Finley Bowling Club also hosts a range of community-minded events. “We are a community club, and our weekly events put money back into the local community,” club manager Fred Braybon said. The club is a major supporter of the charity CanAssist, which assists regional cancer patients with costs associated with treatment. Since September 2021 alone, the club has helped raise $3000 for the service by donating a portion of the weekly online raffle, which offers up to $700 in local vouchers each week. “Every Thursday we do an online raffle, which we started doing after the first week of COVID restrictions back in 2020,” said Mr Braybon. “Chances are if you get a free $50 to spend somewhere local, you’ll come out having spent closer to $100. “So, its a great way for the club and the community to support local.”
In addition to the proceeds donated to CanAssist, the raffle is estimated to have seen $14,500 reinvested in local business since the raffle’s return in September.
The club also offers regular dining from 6pm on Fridays, and beginner friendly social bowls events on Sundays. Bingo is also played every Tuesday, the proceeds of which are also donated to
CanAssist. Patrons can expect a newlook gaming centre as well, following a major renovation completed early this year.

CARPET BOWLS
DENILIQUIN RSL BOWLS CLUB Lawn bowls is not just a sport but a way of life, so what better way to get involved than to become a member of the Deniliquin RSL Bowling club this year. You can play lawn bowls for fun through social bowls held three days a week, and members of the club can head down to the greens for a roll any time you like. For those who takes their bowls seriously, there’s a pennant season every summer, and tournaments held at the club and others throughout the region. RSL Bowls Club president Tony Tonta said no matter the format, becoming a member is great for your social life. ‘‘You will meet people from all walks of life, from very young to not so young and you make lifetime friends along the journey,’’ he said. ‘‘You don’t even have to bowl to experience the hospitality of our club members, as there is always someone more than willing to just sit and have a chat.’’ The Deniliquin RSL Bowls Club was established more than 50 years ago, and boasts a clubroom and verandah overlooking two beautifully manicured bowling greens. It is not uncommon to see 70 or more bowlers on the greens over the space of a week.
The club hosts the Bowls Gr8 for Brains program, which has finally been recognised by Bowls Australia. Tonta said Bowls Club members have experienced the benefits of this program, which is open to anyone in the community. ‘‘You don’t have to be a finely tuned athlete to play bowls, but in one game of lawn bowls you can walk 1.5km, lift 92kg, bend and stretch 88 times and step up 21 times, which all help to form the 10 known benefits of bowls.’’ If you’ve never played bowls before, now is the time to learn. With fewer bowls on the calendar during winter, you have the chance to learn some new skills in a relaxed atmosphere.
Social Bowls Played every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Register at the club by 12.30pm for a 1pm start. Everyone is welcome, regardless of your level of experience. Teams are chosen on the day and bowls can be provided by the club.
Barefoot Bowls Get a group of family and friends together and spend a couple of hours in the fresh air, having fun. The club can supply equipment, provide tuition, fire up the barbecue and open the bar. There are lights, so twilight bowls is not out of the question when the days are hot.
Rookie Rollers This program was created to enable children to participate in an engaging and fun, games based format of lawn bowls. The club is registered with Bowls Australia to provide support through the Sporting Schools Program. The Deniliquin RSL Bowls Club will conduct a four week after school program in Term 2 of this school year. With low membership fees and a group of friendly faces just looking forward to helping you along the journey, now is the time to become a member and ‘have a go’. Call Tonta on 0418 817 744 to register or for more information.

mental and physical wellbeing and reduced stress. It is also a great way to socialise.
In years gone by there have been teams representing several hotels, the bowling club, golf club and also Mathoura, with well in excess of 100 players participating each week.
Social bowls is played every Sunday with games starting at 1pm. It is so simple to participate; simply turn up 30 minutes before and put your name down. You will be allocated a team and if you require a bit of coaching, there is someone there to show you how.
Like many sports over the last few years, the number of participants has declined, but now that everything is housed under the RSL Club roof it’s far easier for anyone in the community to come along and give it a go.
You will also get a cuppa and a biscuit. Everyone is welcome, regardless of your experience. Ladies bowls is played every Thursday at 1pm. Registrations are taken 30 minutes before play, after which you will be allocated to a team.
Carpet bowls is similar to lawn bowls, but played under cover all year round on specially made mats. Players use smaller and lighter bowls. This allows people of all ages and of varying mobility to enjoy a sport without the challenges of the elements. It is also easy on the pocket, as the club provides the bowls and daily charges are minimal.
COVID has not been kind to the club in the past two years, resulting in the cancellation of the Wednesday night competitions. But the club hopes to bring it back soon.
You can play social bowls every Sunday, and ladies day is every Thursday.
Tournaments have also been held, bringing carpet bowlers from hundreds
of kilometres away to compete a couple of times a year for good prizemoney. Carpet bowls is not a strenuous activity, but there are many similar benefits to that of lawn bowls. These benefits include improved concentration and coordination and balance, enhanced

They have specialist expertise in assessing, diagnosing and treating all the varying sporting injuries that may arise for local athletes. They are able to expertly manage acute sporting injuries such as: sprained ankles and fractures, strained muscles (such as hamstring, quadricep, or calf), shoulder dislocations, AC joint sprains, tendon ruptures, acute injuries to the knee (such as ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL, meniscus injuries as well as patella dislocations) and ‘corkies’. They are also well-equipped to manage those ongoing niggling sporting injuries such as tendinopathies, tennis and golfer’s elbow, wrist sprains,
patellofemoral joint pain, plantar fasciitis, shoulder impingement and rotator cuff tears, as well as neck, upper and low back pain. As physiotherapists they are well placed to help you get the most out of life, and don’t just look after sporting injuries. They can help you recover from any type of injury by reducing pain and/ or stiffness, assisting to increase your mobility, strength and control, and can help to prevent further injury. They listen to your needs and tailor a treatment plan specific to your condition. Treatment modalities consist of various types of manual therapy eg joint mobilisation and manipulation, soft tissue massage, taping, dry needling, movement correction and/or exercise prescription. Pam also has a Masters of Acupuncture and Johanna is thrilled she is able to offer this specialised treatment to the Deni community. They are first contact practitioners, so you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see them.
