STEAM RALLY ECHUCA MOAMA 2016

WELCOME! DIRECTOR’S REPORT 2016 The Rotary Club of Echuca-Moama extends a warm welcome to all exhibitors and visitors for this years’ 53rd annual Steam Rally over the Queen’s birthday long weekend, Saturday 11th & Sunday June 12. We will be showcasing working and static displays of an era when horses and steam power forged our nation into what it is today. One of our regions longest running major events with more than 700 exhibits of yesteryear will have something to interest every member of the family. The major exhibit for this year’s Rally is a fully restored 18 pounder cannon used by the 1st Division Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) at Gallipoli 19 May 1915, this QF 18 Pounder is drawn by 6 horses and also includes an ammunition carriage called the Limber which will be exhibited for the first time in Victoria at the Rally. The Rally is our major fundraiser for the year and the Rotary Club of Echuca-Moama each year nominate a not for profit organisation to be the major beneficiary and this year we are allocating the funds towards the redevelopment of the Rotary Community Park.

and we are honoured to have the Moama Bowling Club as the major sponsors for this year’s Rally and we would like to thank the Board and Staff for their much valued continued support of the Rally. On behalf of the Steam Rally Echuca-Moama, the Rotary Club of Echuca Moama I would personally like to thank the 200 plus volunteers for their help over the weekend, the exhibitors for their efforts in attending, enthusiasm in showing and demonstrating their exhibits. THE ANZAC CENTENARY 18 POUNDER GUN PROJECT THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN ARTILLERY HISTORICAL COMPANY (RAAHC) The Royal Australian Artillery Historical Company (RAAHC) is a public company and a volunteer not- for- profit organisation of members. The Company’s core purpose is: to promote the significance of Australia’s Artillery, its history and heritage. The RAAHC has Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 Sub-Division 30.15 Item 1 and 4. Consequently, all cash donations in excess of $2.00 are tax deductible. In 2013 the RAAHC expressed a vision: To produce an 18 Pounder gun, limber, detachment and horses to provide a living memorial to both the men who served in the war to end all wars and the horses that supported them.

THE PROJECT The project has been a daunting task and has involved the raising of funds, restoration/rebuild of an original World War 1 18 Pounder its ammunition limber, the acquisition/restoration of harness and saddles, the recruitment of gun detachments, the acquisition and training of horses and the replication of period uniforms. An 18 Pounder projectile has been collected from each of the battlefields where Australians fought and placed in the ammunition limber. It is intended that the gun, limber, detachment and horses will be provided for ANZAC Centenary commemorative events over the period 2015 to 2018. Jim Frecklington who built the Jubilee coach for the Queen, has restored the gun while Max Pearce of Beauwood Stud in Goulburn has trained the horses and drivers. The project has been funded by public donations and by generous sponsors. To date $200 000 has been collected and a further $150 000 is required to support the project to 2018. The Team has participated in events in Canberra ACT as well as Goulburn, Gunning, Gundagai, Yass, Manly, Bowral, Inverell, Gundagai, Yass and Jugiong in NSW. The Team has also participated in an event in Willow Mavin, Victoria.

2016 MAJOR BENEFICIARY ROTARY COMMUNITY PARK Building For the Future ROTARY PARK This beautiful park, owned by the Rotary Club of Echuca Moama is settled on the edge of the Campaspe River. With a boundary backdrop of wonderful bushland this venue can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion and requirement. It is the home of the Steam Rally Echuca Moama which caters for approx 10,000 people through the gates over the two day event. The park is also used by community groups throughout the year, The Truck Show in September, the Swap meet in April; our local scouts camped out one week end and is available for organisations, individuals or any other groups to hold events or any function throughout the year. Many locals use the park on their daily walks, a place to run and walk their dogs, fish at various spots along the Campaspe, for the kids to ride their bikes and a safe place for the learner driver to practice the reversing or any of those tricky parking techniques. Also at the park is the home of the Miniature Railway Group which opens on set weekends to the public for entertainment and enjoyment for all the family. The Echuca & District Vintage Car Club, Echuca Small Engine Club and Adult Horse Trail Riders have their clubrooms on the site with the Men’s Shed coming on board later this year. It sports a full size gravelled arena with loading ramp facilities and is capable of large parking capacities. With two entrances to the park, one off the main highway and the other off Rose St, the area has easy access and can be secured easily depending on the event. The venue has an office on site with separate toilet blocks, a public dump point and water for all RV travellers. Also a 48 hour stopover for self contained caravans and motor homes. The park is maintained by the Rotary Club members.

Chief Executive Officer Moama Bowling Club

MESSAGE FROM PETER WALSH MP The Echuca Moama Rotary Club, under the leadership of Rally Director Alan Whitten, is to be congratulated on the tremendous effort they have put into preparing for this year’s rally. With over 700 exhibits of working yesteryear and entertainment for every member of the family, a great weekend is assured. I extend a warm welcome to the many thousands of visitors who have travelled from across the country to spend this weekend at iconic Rotary Park for the 2016 Steam Rally Echuca-Moama. I welcome too our local contingent who continues to support and embrace the rally in large numbers each year. Thank you to the many service organisations who volunteer year after year, and the generous local sponsors who support the rally. Your efforts in caring for your community are very much appreciated.

Tourism plays a crucial role in our economic prosperity here in Echuca Moama and given that this rally generates a substantial amount of money for the community each year, it is important that we all take ownership and support where we can. The rich history of our riverside community is the idyllic backdrop to stage one of the state’s best known steam rallies. It will be a great weekend to be enjoyed by one and all. I hope you delight in reminiscing through the years and projects, and take time to reflect on a job very well done by our forefathers.

AUSTRALIAN AXEMAN COMPETITION The Midland Axemans Association will again be hosting another official prize winning competition over both days of the Rally. This is where we will see wood chopping at its very best. Events will take place at 10 minute intervals; there will also be a couple of Victoria vs Tasmania challenges. The team from Tassie and our Vic team will certainly entertain the crowd with their amazing skill with the axe. This year there will be at least 15 axemen from across the channel. This year’s line-up of axemen will include Australian and Victorian title holders, local axemen and axe women and also the juniors. Some of the events : Novice standing block and underhand; Open standing block and underhand; Under 18; double handed saw; golden years; cross cut sawing and also the chain saw event. The wood chopping has become a major feature of the rally with each event attracting large numbers of spectators from the ones who follow the events to those who are fascinated by the skills of the axemen, men and women of all ages and the young people who have never watched this type of entertainment.

STEAM RALLY ECHUCA MOAMA 2016

HARRY FERGUSON TRACTOR CLUB CELEBRATING 80 YEARS TYPE A, 70 YEARS GREY FERGY AND 60 YEARS GREY & GOLD FERGIE Dedicated to helping fellow members in the restoration and preservation of Ferguson Tractors, associated implements and the collection of memorabilia. To appreciate the place in history of “Ferguson System”. The HFTC held its first AGM at Echuca Steam Rally in 1994 and has been involved with and attended all rallies since. We still hold our Annual Meeting on the Saturday night of the Steam Rally at a venue in Echuca. The little grey Fergy was the machine that finally replaced the horse on many farms and it became Britain’s best loved tractors as well as being exported widely throughout the British Empire. At the heart of its success by its unique hydraulic system and the three-point linkage — a concept that brought tractors and their implements together as a unit.

Harry Fergusons tractor developments commenced with the Belfast plough (1921), through the Ferguson Brown (1936) and Ford Ferguson (1939) to the massive production run of the TE-20 at Banner Lane (1946–56). The Ferguson story concludes with the days of Massey-Harris-Ferguson and the FE35 (1956) tractor and onwards to the Massey Ferguson empire. In 2016 the Ferguson Type A (Ferguson-Brown) is 80 years old, the TE-20 (Grey Fergy) is 70 years old and the FE35 (Grey and Gold) is 60 years old. The Harry Ferguson Club has a lot to celebrate at this year’s Echuca Steam Rally.
