Tatura Primary School celebrated its 150th birthday, drawing over 1000 attendees for a day filled with festivities, memories, and community spirit.

More than 1000 people walked through the main gates of Tatura Primary School on Saturday, October 26 for the school’s 150th birthday celebrations.

The market and historical event drew big crowds from all over the region, along with past and present students, staff and principals all in attendance.

Current school principal Susanne Gill said it was a wonderful day, and the school committee who planned and organised the celebrations should be commended for their incredible efforts.

“The committee did a wonderful job,”

Susanne said.

“The whole day was incredible, and it was absolutely mind-blowing to see so many people enjoying it.

“It was great to see all the past students, staff, principals, and just hear everyone laughing and talking about all the history of our amazing school.”

The day included cultural dancers, live entertainment, performances by the school choir and band, ice-cream trucks, coffee vans, and stalls run by present students featuring old-fashioned guessing games for prizes and lucky dips.

New one-stop digger service

As the demand for local landscaping services grows, a new business is stepping up to meet the needs of the community.

Tatura Small Digger Hire owner Andrew Wills launched his venture after recognising this gap in the market.

Offering a range of customisable services, Andrew provides both wet and dry hire options, making it easier for homeowners to tackle their landscaping projects.

“Wet hire means you hire me as the operator along with the equipment, while dry hire allows customers to take the machinery themselves,” Andrew said.

“This flexibility offers an affordable alternative to businesses and home owners to have a crack at doing the work themselves.

“It’s more cost-effective, and you get the satisfaction of saying, ‘I did that!’”

Andrew’s equipment includes a Kanga PW628 digger with various attachments, including a four-in-one bucket, smudge bar, a cement mixer, a trencher and a power drive head with three various sized augers.

His services cater to everything from digging up gardens and scraping yards to spreading mulch and more.

“Recently, I helped a customer spread mulch over a couple of acres in just a few hours, saving them an entire weekend of work,” he said.

In addition to providing equipment, Andrew emphasised his commitment to customer support.

“I offer on-site training to ensure customers feel comfortable using the machinery,” he said.

“I want to make it easy for people who may be intimidated by the equipment.”

Andrew also emphasised the importance of community support, noting that all his equipment is available for local hire, allowing residents to bypass the larger companies.

“People want to support local businesses, and I’m here to provide that service,” he said.

For those interested in learning more, he invites you to reach out.

“You can contact me via phone on 0458 243 030 or check out my Facebook page for more details,” Andrew said.

“I’m here to help make your landscaping projects a reality.”

With a focus on customer satisfaction, Andrew’s new business is set to make a significant impact in the area.

Whether you’re looking to tackle a DIY project or need professional assistance, Tatura Small Digger Hire is ready to lend a hand.

Rent ‘The G’ for a special event

Looking for the perfect venue for your next party, club meeting or special event?

Look no further! “The Garage” known as “The G” in Tatura offers a unique, relaxed atmosphere complete with a pool table, multiple TVs, a projector, cosy seating and a warm fireplace around an array of timeless memorabilia.

Owned by Jody Vincitorio, who also runs the adjacent Ross St Café/Diner, The G is a man cave-style space filled with eclectic treasures collected over the years. It’s already making waves in the community, hosting car and bike meetings, as well as milestone celebrations.

“I have already had some people rent it out for events and a couple of club meetings, and an 18th, 21st, 40th,” Jody said.

“It fits around 50 people and is available for hire seven-days-a-week during the day or evening.”

For just $400, you can rent the space for up to six hours, with wood provided in the winter months for the fireplace.

And, it’s a BYO event space and the perfect spot to get some pizzas delivered if you’re hosting an evening function.

“The G is dark and cosy compared to our bright, lively diner space, but a very cool place for a party or an

event for sure,” Jody said.

“And you can bring your own alcohol, it’s just like having a party in a mate’s shed.

“The diner is still open from 6 am to 2 pm, so we can help with food during those hours, but if someone wants to hire The G for an evening event, they can always get takeaway from other businesses in Tatura, which is supporting local too,” he said.

“Or they can pack their own nibbles and bring them along with their drinks.”

Whether it’s a casual get-together or a milestone celebration, The G is the cool spot you’ve been searching for.

In addition to this exciting new space opening and bookings now being accepted, Jody had some other exciting news to share.

“The diner was a finalist in the Greater Shepparton Business Network awards recently,” Jody said.

“It was under the category of Visitor Experience of the Year, which is incredible to know that people are enjoying what we have created.

“There isn’t much room to hang anything else now; even the roof is almost full, but it’s definitely been a great year for

us, and word of mouth is bringing people in from all over the state.

“It wasn’t our year for the awards, but we are so thankful to the people who supported and nominated us.”

Rotary club wrap-up

This year has been a bustling year for the Rotary Club of Tatura, marked by successful fundraisers and a commitment to raising awareness for various local charities.

Their ongoing efforts have significantly impacted the community, and their dedication has not gone unnoticed.

Past president Bill Purcell highlighted the club’s achievements.

“Our can and bottle collection is going gangbusters,” he said.

“We’re even considering a monthly collection in Merrigum due to increasing demand.”

These collections have allowed the club to support important initiatives, including nearly $1500 raised for the Prostate Cancer Appeal in September.

Additionally, some members participated in the Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch in Shepparton, with funds supporting the employment of three local cancer nurses.

In October, during Breast Cancer Month, the club set a new goal for its can collection funds, aiming to raise money for cancer research.

“Everyone knows someone affected by cancer, and every bit of research helps in the fight against this disease,” Bill said.

The Rotary club also focuses on empowering young people through various programs.

At the end of November, they hope to send two candidates to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.

Furthermore, they were pleased to award two scholarships from the Bruce

Rotarian Rhonda Rose with Bruce Anderson awardee Denni Bathman.

Anderson Award a $1000 scholarship for outstanding students entering university.

This year, both Katherine Wagner and Denni Bathman were recognised for their achievements.

Events like Tat 200 and International Dairy Week have become significant on the Rotary calendar, fuelled by the selfless dedication of volunteers working for the community’s benefit.

The Bunnings BBQ earlier this year was another resounding success, and the annual art show attracted visitors from far and wide.

“This year’s art show was hugely successful and enjoyed by many,” he said.

“It’s great to see so many people out and appreciating the incredible art.

“We’re already planning for next year.”

It has been a huge year for the Taura Rotary Club, and as it continues to thrive and make a lasting difference in the community, the club’s efforts are truly commendable.

Rotary is increasingly being approached by sporting clubs eager to participate in the CDS collection over the summer months.

If your club is interested, phone 0419 335 241.

“We look forward to teaming up with more clubs to raise funds for the youth of our town,” Bill said.

“And we are really looking forward to seeing what we can do next year in 2025. It’s been a fabulous year.”

Schubert shares vision

In this Q&A, Rod Schubert, the elected representative from the Midland Ward, shares his vision for Greater Shepparton, emphasising the importance of advocating for rural areas and addressing key community concerns.

What inspired you to run for council, and what experiences have shaped your perspective on local issues?

For too long the rural areas of Greater Shepparton City Council, including the Midland Ward, have not received their fair share of funding.

The last council was too Shepparton centric.

I want to ensure this lack of consideration by council is changed to secure an equitable distribution of funding to all the rural areas of Council.

The rural sectors of GSCC are desperately needed and I will do my best to see that their views are heard and appreciated within GSCC.

Also, I do believe the council needs to focus on appropriate council business first and foremost rates, roads and rubbish.

My priorities are: Road maintenance/ repair advocate strongly and effectively to the relevant authorities.

Water water is crucial to our region, we “protect” our water by maintaining strong connections and advocacy with the water authorities and levels of government development of industrial land this will enhance local businesses and increase jobs.

Seek to understand and eliminate current red tape and the bureaucratic processes that stifle development while bringing local businesses’ expertise to the table.

Public Transport expand public transport for the rural sectors of GSCC. Conduct a review of the public transport needs of all (rural) sectors of council.

How do you plan to involve community members in your decision-making process?

I want to increase community consultation through advisory groups.

I am available for all community planning meetings and attend as many community meetings/forums to hear and understand the issues affecting the ratepayers.

I understand that only a diverse range of communication forms, times and meetings can ensure that all people are heard, eg those at work or with carers’ duties.

What strategies do you propose to promote economic growth and support local businesses?

A comprehensive review needs to be completed as to benchmark ourselves against our (collaborative) competitors and also specifically why so many retail outlets throughout the council are ceasing to operate.

We cannot fix any of the above mentioned problems until we comprehensively understand what the problems are.

Once the review is completed, we can then set about rectifying the issues and providing the necessary support.

We are in a manufacturing area which we need to capitalise on, and we need to increase Industrial land.

Furthermore, we need additional focus on strengthening the visitor economy in the region.

How do you plan to address environmental concerns and promote sustainable practices in our community?

I am new to this role, so I will familiarise myself with the issues at hand when I commence my role.

However, I can promise that I will then understand if every tree council plants is also watered and be across the range of ecological activities GSCC undertakes and influences.

Advisory groups will be a good way of connecting our decisions with our communities’ expertise.

These advisory groups need to be representative of our community.

What solutions do you propose for the housing affordability crisis many communities are facing?

As can be seen in Tatura there are several affordable houses being built in Ross St.

Many of the residents are concerned as there was no consultation, however the consensus is such housing is required to rectify the issue.

So, Tatura is part of the solution and I will strive to find others.

How do you plan to support local schools and engage young people in the community?

There has been substantial criticism of the Greater Shepparton Secondary College and the closure of other secondary schools in our region.

We have over 150 students leaving Tatura every day to attend other secondary schools and the loss of Mooroopna Secondary College was particularly damaging to the local students.

I am a strong advocate of community cohesion and equity which means I will listen closely to the views of parents and young people before forming an opinion on how council can best serve them.

I know much more needs to be done and I know we have the expertise in the community to punch above our weight. What initiatives will you support to ensure our community is inclusive and representative of all residents?

As mentioned above, there are many ratepayers who cannot attend community consultations or the way in which these consultations are conducted may need to improve.

We cannot divorce means from ends. I will ensure that the review of the council’s community consultation policy next year will be rigorous, and the new policy is all inclusive so council cannot operate disconnected from its many communities it serves.

We need to go where the people are.

What is your long-term vision for the community, and how do you plan to achieve it?

I want to use my best endeavours to ensure we are a unified and prosperous community.

Councillors are elected by the people for the people and we as councillors must have this thought foremost in our minds.

Always think about our community needs first and make every effort to meet the ratepayers’ expectations as far as we can discern them.

Have you got a final message for the community?

I will be a strong (and I hope) effective advocate as a councillor for the Greater Shepparton City Council and for the Midland Ward.

The rural sectors of council are not given the consideration they deserve.

I will make every effort to fix this.

After two years of challenging weather, last-minute venue changes in 2022 that turned many away and last year’s celebrations cancelled due to a power outage from yet another storm, excitement is building for this year’s Tatura Carols by Candlelight.

Lions Club event organiser and volunteer Keith Bryant expressed hope for sunshine, saying that volunteers are keeping everything crossed.

“It’s been such a shame that the weather has been against us the past few years, but we are optimistic that this year we will be back and in full swing for the community,” Keith said.

With a host of activities planned for this special Christmas event, the community is encouraged to pack a chair or picnic rug and head to Mactier Gardens on Wednesday, December 11 from 6 pm to 9 pm for a fun-filled, familyfriendly evening.

Performances will feature students from Tatura Primary School and Sacred Heart Tatura, along with the Shepparton Brass and Wind Band and the Shepparton Pipes and Drums.

Keith also hinted at some surprise guest artists lined up for the night.

“We are adding to the mystery this year and have a couple of special artists attending the night too,” he said.

“People will have to come along to find out.”

The free event will also feature the traditional BBQ prepared by Lions Club volunteers, with sausages and chicken steaks on the menu.

Santa Claus will be in attendance and available for family photos throughout the evening.

“We are still confirming a few more things at the moment, but it should be a wonderful night,” Keith said.

“I’m really hoping for nice weather and a big turnout, with lots of people ready to sing.”

CELEBRATING 91 YEARS

TATURA Anniversary Celebration OFCOMMUNITYCARE

As Tatura celebrates its 150th birthday, GV Health would like to take the opportunity to reflect on nearly a century of healthcare service provided to our community.

Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility has been integral to the community since the early 1930s.

The hospital was established in 1933 as part of the Bush Nursing Movement, which began in 1908 to provide medical care in rural areas. The community played a vital role in its establishment, with local fundraising efforts, including selling bricks for a shilling each.

The hospital’s foundation stone was laid by Mrs. R. Beggs, State President of the Country Women’s Association (CWA), and it was officially opened by Sir James Barrett, then President of the Bush Nursing Association.

The hospital received a $2 million upgrade in 2000.

Over the years, the hospital has continued to grow, adapting to the community’s needs while maintaining its strong ties to the town’s history.

In the last year and a half, the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility has added solar panels, HVAC air-conditioning and hoists in every room as it continues to evolve and support the Tatura community.

The hospital thanks the Ladies Auxiliary, which finished up this year, for all their hard work, support, and donations to the facility over the years.

Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility looks forward to serving the Tatura community for many more years to come.

A LEGACY OF CARE

Michelle Flannigan has dedicated 24 years to the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility and is one of the longest-serving staff members.

Starting her career in administration, Michelle transitioned to nursing a decade later, driven by a desire to help others.

“Aged care is incredibly rewarding,” she said.

“These were people who often got forgotten, but they deserved dignity and care just like anyone else.”

Michelle has witnessed the facility’s evolution firsthand, noting that while technology has advanced and improvements have been made, the heart of the service—the people and the care they provide—has remained the same.

“We are still a community-based hospital and nursing home, which is wonderful,” she said.

“It’s great for the people that live here, it makes the transition a lot easier.”

FINDING HOME AT PARKVILLA

At 93 years old, Mary Lalor is the longest-staying resident of Parkvilla Aged Care Facility, having lived there for nearly seven years.

A Tatura native, Mary found comfort and care at Parkvilla despite the challenges of aging.

“They never refuse anybody anything,” she said.

“They are very good and all very nice.”

Mary said she appreciated the routine and care from familiar faces.

Mary’s family also praised the facility and said the care they had seen was the best, even compared to more extensive facilities in the city.

Activities like craft sessions and outings keep Mary busy, and she even shares her baking skills with the staff.
