Land rezoning fuels growth
Tatura is set to thrive with a new land development planned for the future.
By KELLY CARMODYIn a significant stride towards fostering strategic residential growth, the Greater Shepparton City Council has granted approval to amend its planning scheme, green-lighting the rezoning of 602 hectares of agricultural land in Tatura.
This visionary plan sets the stage for the town’s expansion over the next three decades, with the potential to accommodate up to 3620 residential lots, spanning various densities and rural living options.
The approved amendment, demarcated by the Midland Hwy and Pyke Rd to the north, Dhurringile and Bayunga Rds to the east, Cussen Park, Pyke Rd, and Murton Rd to the south, and Dhurringile and Tatura-Undera Rds to the west, aims to secure the identified land as a future residential growth corridor.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali expressed great optimism about Tatura’s transformation earlier this year and said he envisioned Tatura evolving into its own city and potentially merging with Mooroopna, rivalling the

To ensure Tatura remains an appealing and liveable town for new residents, a forthcoming precinct structure plan will be implemented, introducing new housing options, expansive open spaces, and essential supporting infrastructure.
Development Edge project director Michael Lewis said Pyke Rd offered an optimal location for their future residential master planned community and highlighted the community’s advantageous proximity to the Northlinks Golf Course and excellent access to Tatura’s town centre, as well as convenient connections to the Midland Hwy, leading to Shepparton and Bendigo.
“Our aim is to develop this community with the same level of excellence and appeal that have become synonymous with our other successful projects, such as Seven Creeks Estate, The Vines, and Sanctuary Park Estate in Shepparton,” Michael said.
“With a focus on enhancing the quality of life, the development will encompass thoughtfully designed parklands, open spaces, shared path linkages, and tree-lined streets.

Be a part of something special
Tatura Communty House is calling out for new volunteers to help support the community.
Fostering a sense of belonging, providing much needed assistance, and helping create a tight-knit community support network, is what Tatura’s Community House sets out to achieve.
However, without the constant assistance from passionate and dedicated volunteers, none of it would be possible.
“Without volunteers and grants, there would be limited support services, no events, probably no community house,” Tatura Community House co-manager Tom Boocock said.
“Funding is very little and only enough to support one employee for 30 hours of work per week it’s not enough.
“We rely on the magnificent work from volunteers and are extremely thankful to them for giving up their time.”
Right now, Tatura Community House is searching for new volunteers to step into their programs, have fun, meet new people, and lend a helping hand in the community.
Jacob Dedman has been volunteering for two years since he was 16 years old, and said he enjoyed the social aspect of volunteering alongside meeting new people.
“I help make hot drinks for the coffee hub that’s held as a social catch up for anyone in the community once a week,” Jacob said.
“My Mum and I do it together and I also help with event filming and photography too.
“It’s a rewarding feeling helping your community and I have been given some amazing opportunities along the way.”
The hub has many programs and services run by volunteers. If you’re interested in getting involved, please call 5824 1315.
Barber shop is a cut above
Tatura’s first female barber is over the moon to be living her dream.
By KELLY CARMODY“Once upon a time there was a girl who dreamed about opening her own barber shop, so she did, the end,” Grand Central Barber Shop, owner/barber Jodie Newell said, then she laughed.
Jodie has been trimming beards and cutting boys and men’s hair now for more than a decade.
She described her role as being the best job in the world and said the connections she made through a reflection in a mirror, were more than just a haircut.
“I love people, I love kids, I love laughing and I love to chat,” she said.
“Every day is awesome, because I’m doing what I love.”
In mid-May an opportunity came to fruition for Jodie as she was offered a dream space to have her very own unique barber shop, and without too much of a thought and an encouraging push from husband Kyle Vincitorio, she said she knew this was her time and the opportunity to
make her childhood dream come true.
Grand Central Barber Shop is one of the many new businesses to ignite Tatura’s main street, and as far as uniqueness goes, this place can’t be missed.
Memorabilia covers the inside for as far as your eye can see, like a wondrous distraction every way you look, but it’s Jodie’s refreshing look on life, her charm and energy that warms this space the most.
“I am so excited to have my own space that I have been able to design and bring to life, while embracing my passion and love for what I do,” Jodie said.
“I think I am the first female barber in Tatura, which is really exciting.”
If you are a male between the age of one and 100, then this place is worth a visit.
Jodie’s creative vision is not only in her welcoming atmosphere as you step into her shop, but it also extends within her unique ability and exceptional understanding and passion for her trade and love for finally living her dream.
Op shop generates support
Nourishing the community through a food bank is what Generations Op Shop is passionate about.
The food and welfare support service that has been operating within the walls of the op shop since 2019, has seen many people receive the help they need.
However, since the floods last year, the service needs have grown, and more people than ever before are asking for help.
“We want people to know this service is available, it’s not a secret that it exists, and we are here to help,” Generations Church community care manager Jacqui Hall said.
“It’s great to see people asking for help, because often they don’t.
In partnerships alongside Shepparton FoodShare, Ritchies IGA, FoodWorks Tatura, Community House Tatura, Tatura Hot Bread and the generosity of local donations all play a part in keeping this service alive.
Without those connections Jacqui said it would be extremely hard for the service to even exist.
“Everybody’s needs are different, so having a variety of businesses and services helping with donations makes it possible to give these people sometimes the basic of things, that we may take for granted in everyday life.” she said.
“It’s not our place to judge why these people need help, we just want to help them and if they have asked for help, they obviously need it.”
Whether people in need come through their front door or knock at the back one, they don’t mind, they just
want people in need to reach out.
The food bank and welfare services are available Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. Everything from fresh fruit and
vegetables, meat, frozen meals, and nonperishable items are available and free. There are also cleaning products and sanitary supplies, that can offer that bit
of extra dignity for someone in need. The food bank is always accepting donations, so if you can help, please reach out by phoning 5824 3059.
Playground has tick of approval
Tatura Park’s new playground will entertain
(and parents) for many years to come.
Greater Shepparton City Council, in partnership with the Tatura Advisory Committee, has successfully added an exciting new feature to Tatura Park.
Omnitech Playgrounds were engaged to provide two designs, which were then voted on by residents, with a clear winner emerging.
This chosen design includes a variety of play equipment including a pommel walker, hooded caterpillar slide, Swiss wall climber, monkey bars, and a swing set with a special basket swing.
With installation completed midJune, the new playground now stands ready for children and families to enjoy.
Motel scoops special award
Tatura Country Motel has been recognised for exceptional customer service alongside key factors such as motel design, style and online ratings and reviews.
Dale and Liane Simpson, who purchased the motel around 18 months ago, were given the exciting news recently that has seen the motel receive the prestigious award for Country Motel of the Year for Victoria 2023, leaving them thrilled.
“We have put in a lot of time and hard work since becoming owners, so it’s nice for that to be recognised by not only the awards but our guests too,” Dale said.
“When we bought the motel, we wanted it to be a place where people wanted to come and stay and not had to, and we can see that happening now.
“Tatura has a lot to offer with its country vibe and quieter atmosphere, and the main street is within walking distance, which makes it a lovely town to visit.”
The motel earlier this year also received a traveller review award through Booking.com for its high online ratings, serving as another mark of distinction for the owners on their guests overall experience.
Acknowledging excellence within the travel and hospitality sector not just within the region, but the whole state,
is an exceptional achievement and one that both Dale and Liane are extremely proud of.
“It’s wonderful and we are really excited for the future of the motel,” Liane said.
“The motel really caters for everyone. “And things are only going to get bigger and better.”
Putting Tat on the map
By KELLY CARMODYCancer, an all-too-familiar presence in today's world that impacts countless lives and families, including that of Tatura business owner Jenny Lagozzino.
Having personally endured her own battle with leukaemia, she understands the challenges and struggles associated with the disease.
For the past five years, on the sidelines of her busy business life, she has tirelessly dedicated herself to raising funds and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Her unwavering efforts and powerful advocacy have resulted in an astounding achievement, surpassing the $100,000 milestone in contributions to the foundation.
It’s no wonder that when the foundation received a phone call from the production team of the awardwinning TV travel show Adventure
All Stars and asked the question “who was an incredible Australian fundraiser”, Jenny Lagozzino’s name was mentioned.
Jenny is set to hit our TV screens on Channel 7 next year after being chosen to be on the show alongside 12 other fundraisers from across the country.
The way the show works is that every participant must pick a charity close to their heart and raise a minimum of $10,000 in 10 months for it.
However, they are encouraged to raise as much as possible in this time for their charity and in return for their goodwill, their reward is a life-changing week-long adventure with Adventure All Stars
Jenny has chosen Myeloma Australia as her charity, an aggressive cancer that is currently affecting one of her close friends.
She is passionate about raising money and awareness for this incurable (terminal) cancer and said the opportunity had nothing to do with the holiday at the end; it’s about helping people in her own backyard.
“My father always said to me while growing up that what you take in your right hand you have to give back in your left — and that is something that has always stuck with me,” she said.
“I’m fortunate to be in a position where I can help and use our pub as a venue for fundraising.
“When I do something, I don’t do it half-heartedly, I go right in. I am going to spread the word for myeloma cancer
sufferers, promote this amazing region, and get my little town of Tat on the map along the way.”
Just two months into the fundraising, Jenny has already raised $12,000, surpassing the minimum amount needed for the show and her chosen charity.
Five thousand dollars of that came from her and husband Frank's pocket, straight after being accepted into the show.
Over the next eight months, Jenny will be holding many fundraising events at their pub in Tatura.
“The fundraising is going to be heaps of fun,” Jenny said.
“From weekly raffles to a reverse auction to special guests to trivia nights – there will be some fun for everyone. Come get involved, donate a prize or a voucher; every dollar counts, even if it’s just $1.”
Businesses can also get involved by sponsoring a logo on Jenny’s shirt that she will wear while on the TV show.
Furthermore, Jenny will be promoting everyone on the show who has been a part of the fundraising
efforts along the way.
Cast members do not receive appearance fees, and all net proceeds are gifted to the charities.
The show also promotes extraordinary destinations to a global audience as socially positive, harmonious and visually spectacular content.

New owner, same tasty goodies
Tatura Hot Bread’s new owner is excited to take over the thriving business.
After a three-year business venture with Tatura Hot Bread, George and Sophia Wells have traded the early mornings and long hours of bakery life for overseas travel, after selling the business in June to new owner and qualified baker Suman (Sue) Chahal.
Sue, who is originally from India but recently moved to Tatura from NSW with her husband and two children, said she was excited for the adventure with the business, living in a new community while joking about keeping George and Sophia’s daughters, Olivia and Chloe, who will both stay employed at the bakery.
“They are mine now,” Sue said, as she laughed while George grinned and continued to speak about Europe.
Olivia and Chloe are no strangers to the business and have both been heavily involved in different areas over the three years.
George said that although it was the end of an era for him and his wife as they hang up their aprons, they had thoroughly enjoyed their time running the business.
“It’s been really good, and we have met some great people,” he said.
“We recently bought a house out of town so we will be staying local, will take a much-needed holiday and will see what happens after that.”
Sue is looking forward to meeting new people and settling into the country life while trying everything the bakery has on offer, keeping the baked goodies going and bringing some new recipes into the mix.

Making something out of nothing
With a local bird book and a photography award to his name, there isn’t much this young adult won’t try out in his field.
The Tatura resident can be often found volunteering his time to the Tatura Community House as their events photographer and videographer, and with the help of his mother’s business skills, together they run the photography business, Digital Journey Photography.
His mother Cheryl Dedman tells the story of what started on a holiday with a simple point and shoot camera quickly became a photography obsession where he was winning awards and shooting with a mirror-less Cannon R5 alongside multiple lenses and accessories to complete his kit.
“What he sees is different,” Cheryl said.
“I saw it was a strength of his at a young age, so I just ran with it.”
For Jacob, photography is his world. It makes him smile, try new things, and be inspired daily to make something ordinary look out of this world.
He explained that he liked to make people look twice at his work and make them think about what’s happening in the shot.
“As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words,” Jacob said.
“And making something out of nothing is my favourite thing to do.
“Leaving people guessing is equally enjoyable.”

From footy field to farm life
By KELLY CARMODYIn the countryside of Merrigum in 1961, a young man named John Lowe dared to chase his passion on the football field.
Little did he know that his journey would take an unexpected turn, leading him from the roar of the stadium to the realm of farm life and the countless hours of community contributions that followed for many years to come.
At the tender age of 19, John’s undeniable talent caught the attention of the prestigious North Melbourne Football Club.
With wide-eyed excitement, he packed his bags and embarked on a thrilling adventure, eager to embrace the allure of city life and etch his name in the records of Australian football history.
However, fate had a different plan in store for the young country lad.
“The club soon realised that my skills were not quite up to par,” John said, followed by a hearty chuckle.
“They kindly suggested that I return to the bush.”
Undeterred by this setback, John, who preferred to be called Jack, did just that.
He bid farewell to the bright city lights and returned to the Goulburn Valley, and after completing a diploma in mechanical engineering, he set foot in the renowned SPC (Shepparton Preserving Company) as an engineer.
However, amidst the rhythmic hum of machinery and the aroma of ripe fruit, in 1966, John embarked on another remarkable chapter of his life.
It was during this time that he married the love of his life, Lynne, and the two joined forces not only in marriage but also in a shared passion for farming.
From dawn till dusk, for the next 43 years, John and Lynne immersed themselves in the daily duties of farm life, tending to their beloved herd and dedicating themselves to the art of
milking cows, raising a family on a farm, and lending a helping hand in the community.
“Farm life was a terrific life,” he said.
“We raised three great kids here, and we now have five grandkids.
“Tatura is a wonderful community and a great place to live.”
John’s community involvement started in the late ‘70s with the Tatura Apex Club, where he spent 11 years volunteering countless hours to help raise funds for a variety of local projects.
His unwavering dedication to Tatura, also seen him volunteer on the Moyola Aged Care Committee for 40 years, including six where he was the president.
For 18 years he also represented his fellow dairy farmers as the president at Tatura Milk Industries.
Earlier this year John’s community contributions were recognised publicly on Australia Day, where he received the prestigious Tatura’s Citizen of the Year award.
“It was an honourable recognition, but volunteering is all about community and mateship,” he said.
“I’ve grown old volunteering beside mates where we have shared our ups and our downs throughout life.
“Both mates and community, stick together.”
Today, John can be found cheering on his grandchildren from the sidelines of sporting events and showing his support to the local footy club when he isn’t travelling, cooking, fishing, still volunteering or having a cuppa with friends.
His story serves an important message of both compassion alongside a determination to go above and beyond to put others first.
He is a role model for future generations, and although his dreams on the football field may not have panned out, John found his calling right in the heart of his own community.
John Lowe has had a remarkable journey so far and made many community contributions throughout his life.
Located in Tatura, this clever business is bringing community, culture, and food together as owner and cook Truc Huynh spreads her flavours across the region.
“I love to cook and talk to the customers,” Truc said.
“And I love to bring my Vietnamese culture and traditional foods to the people here in the community.”
If you’re feeling hungry just reading this, well here is how it all works.
Friday to Sunday and some Tuesdays, Truc cooks traditional dishes. Some include spring rolls, Vietnamese rolls, sticky rice, bánh mì and soup.
Truc advertises the meals she is making ahead of time on the ‘Everything Tatura’ Facebook page. People can place their orders by simply giving Truc a call or sending her a message.
Delivery in Tatura is available every time she cooks. If you live outside of the town delivery is only available on Saturday or Sunday.

A tapestry of expression
Tyla McGuire and Shannon Miller have mastered the art of tattooing and have recently opened their own studio.
By KELLY CARMODYThe journey of Enraptured Tattoos, female tattoo artists Shannon Miller and Tyla McGuire, is one of both passion and dedication alongside a creative vision where having an eye for design and the ability to conceptualise ideas can take their clients’ visions and transform them into extraordinary tattoo art, often surpassing expectations.
The multi-talented pair who opened a brand-new studio in Tatura midMay, said the business encompasses a combination of artistic talent, technical skill, professionalism, versatility, and a genuine passion for their craft and clients.
“It’s the interaction with people that I enjoy the most,” Shannon said.
“It doesn’t feel like a job, when you’re doing something you love.”
Tyla, who walked into a tattoo parlour fresh out of school at the age of 18 to get her very first tattoo, was offered a
position on the way out.
“I was always involved with art through school and enjoyed drawing, basically anything that didn’t involve writing I was good at,” Tyla said.
“I love seeing my work come together.
“Both of us get a unique opportunity to deliver personalised and meaningful tattoos for our clients, it’s an incredible journey from start to finish.”
Whether it’s traditional, neotraditional, black-work, realism, or intricate geometric designs, the girls are versatile and can adapt to different artistic styles.
Their reputation within the tattoo community in the Goulburn Valley stretches over a period together of almost 20 years.
Their mastery of various tattooing techniques, such as shading, line-work, and colour blending, continues to allow them to create precise and visually stunning tattoos.
Offering a quick and tasty meal on the go
Tatura Kebab owner Mohammad Rezae
The Turkish restaurant which opened in mid-May has locals talking and mouths watering, with their delicious menu on offer seven days a week from 10 am to 9 pm.
Mohammad, who has been cooking kebabs and Turkish delights for over 15 years, said the move to Tatura for the business had been welcomed, and the community support had been inspiring.
“The people here are so lovely,” he said.
“There is a growing population here in Tatura, and I could see the town needed a kebab shop.
“We are so happy, and love being part of this community.”
The family run business prides itself on providing quality and consistent food leaving a taste you will remember.
With everything from kebab rolls, special family packs, combo packs, kids’ meals, hot chips and even sweets, there is sure to be something on the menu for all to enjoy.
And if you’re looking for a meal deal, they have just kicked off their loyalty cards which allows customers to get their sixth kebab free after purchasing the first five.
When Mohammad was asked what the top pick on the menu was he said everything was popular.
The Turkish tastes await your next lunch or dinner and are proving to be another popular fusion of flavours in town.
Junior Bulldogs on the rise
Playing junior football isn’t always about winning on the field, it’s an opportunity to win in many areas of a growing child’s life and development.
There are opportunities for physical fitness, learning social skills, teamwork and cooperation, motivation, growing confidence and self-esteem and building emotional resilience.
But above all, it is a chance to have fun, create lasting memories and develop a lifelong love for the sport.
Tatura Junior Football Netball Club is striving to embed these qualities in young active kids, and as the club
continues to grow from strength to strength so are the numbers of kids that are putting their boots on and getting involved.
“There is so much enthusiasm and excitement around the club this season and numbers are getting bigger every year,” TJFNC junior football co-ordinator Michael Reid said.
“We now have six junior teams from under-9s to under-16s and we have
