New owners, same great service The long-established and award-winning Tatura Hot Bread business may be under new ownership, but the loyal and regular customers can expect the same high standards of food and service. George, Sophia and Olivia Wells have made Tatura their home and have brought their collective multigenerational hospitality and retail skills to their latest venture. “We’ll certainly be sticking with the old favourites,” George said. “And slowly introducing a few new items for our customers to try.” Mexican pies, spinach and ricotta rolls and empanadas - a savoury filled pastry - are now part of the menu, along with warming winter soups, fried rice, lasagne and Mediterranean and breakfast focaccias, which are proving popular.

The full bakery lines of bread, pies, cakes and slices, including the gold medal-winning vanilla slice, continue to be produced by the team of bakers, who typically start their day at 3 am. Adding to the in-store ambience is a new Italian-inspired mural and the aroma of freshly-brewed Belaroma coffee.

George said in between devising new recipes for the bakery Olivia was preparing to represent Victoria in upcoming industry events in Melbourne and Perth. After producing high-quality baked and pastry items, under strict time conditions, Olivia was selected to compete in the Baking Association of Australia event scheduled for

November and World Skills Australia National Championships and Skills Show 2021. In the meantime, the family is looking forward to meeting and getting to know the locals and regular customers. “We took over on July 20 and it’s certainly been a challenging start due to COVID, but everyone has been very welcoming,” George said.

George said his wife Sophia, a qualified chef, and daughter Olivia, a third-year pastry chef and baking apprentice, are looking forward to creating their speciality dishes for the local community. Regular weekly specials will provide variety and allow the team to showcase their culinary skills.

Grand Tatura giveaway Tatura traders and business owners have joined forces to reward loyal customers who spend their money locally. The brainchild of Tatura Cut & Mow owner David Tartaglia, the giveaway will offer $2075 worth of goods and services in six major prize draws. Mes Amours owner Kirsty Richardson said David came up with the initiative to lift spirits during the coronavirus pandemic, promote local shopping and show appreciation to customers. He initially contacted two or three other businesses, but the concept was so popular almost 30 outlets came on board to offer prizes, vouchers or sponsorship. To enter, customers need to shop at one of the participating businesses between Monday, September 14, and Wednesday, November 18, and complete a ticket to enter the draw. "A Facebook page will be created for the community to follow, which will list the participating businesses, a detailed outline of the prizes on offer and information about the draws," Kirsty said.

The positive response to the giveaway initiative has renewed plans to establish the Tatura Business Collective - a less formal version of a traditional chamber of commerce - where business owners can come together and share ideas. Kirsty said the idea was initially floated after the success of the Tatura Christmas Spectacular, staged for the first time in 2019, which saw locals flock to the Hogan St and Stuart Mock Place precinct for an evening of live music, late-night shopping and outdoor dining.

"Once we have enough interest, we will determine a plan to either meet as a group or form a regular online discussion for future collaboration and community business ventures."

Culminating in the unveiling of the community Christmas tree - a metal masterpiece created by Trevaskis Engineering - the event received positive feedback from traders, who were keen to see it become an annual celebration on the Tatura calendar. "We would like to promote the idea of the Tatura Business Collective and encourage other local businesses to join," Kirsty said.

The community Christmas tree lit up the streets of Tatura last December.

Men’s Shed temporarily on hold Tatura Men’s Shed might be experiencing a temporary COVID-19-induced hiatus, but there is plenty going on behind the scenes. Vice-president Tom Perry said members were keen to get back to the shed, to carry out their important community work, as well as continue to support one another. A conservator works on a model ship believed to have been made in Camp 13 Murchison by an interned Japanese pearler from Broome, WA.

History preserved at museum The Tatura Museum will have some interesting new exhibits when the doors are able to reopen after the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Secretary George Ferguson said an elaborate silver tea service, which was a wedding present to Mr and Mrs Martin Cussen, had been donated to the museum.

The museum is a drawcard for visitors to the area, especially those interested in the history of irrigation or wartime camps, or others researching family history to pass on to the next generation.

Mr Cussen was a local auctioneer around the early 1900s, and was a founding member of the Rodney Irrigation Trust, the forerunner of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission. Work is also progressing on a significant restoration project after the museum received a $75,000 Victorian Government Living Heritage Program grant in late 2019, to preserve items that were deteriorating and in need of conservation. A total of 19 pieces, including 14 puppets, an oil painting, model ships and water colour paintings - all created by internees and prisoners of war held at Tatura during WWII are now in the capable hands of the restoration team at University of Melbourne’s Grimwade Centre.

On August 30 several museum members tuned into a Zoom event presented by the Dunera Association, in conjunction with Emanuel Synagogue, Sydney, focusing on the life and art of Dunera Boy Leonhard Adam.

In the meantime, while various projects are on hold and the tools lay idle, the group's seventh wine vintage is quietly fermenting away, in readiness for bottling in the new year. Tom said the wine was just another way of bringing men together, who enjoy fellowship and conversation while crushing the grapes picked from a Heathcote winery, through to the bottling process and eventually enjoying a glass at the weekly lunch. Pre-coronavirus the group hosted a two-course lunch every Tuesday, usually attracting more than 30 members who sampled culinary delights such as duck pie and goat pasta, whipped up by their peers. “We have a few members who love to cook, and they get a bit competitive,” Tom said.

“You can have a glass of wine with your meal and the aim of it is to create an atmosphere where people are comfortable to sit around and talk.” On Thursdays the men-supportingmen theme continues when members bring their collective skills to the workshop to work on individual and group projects. From plumbers, to painters, carpenters and farmers, those with mechanical interests and even a leather tanner, the membership is diverse. The Tatura Men’s Shed has been a success story, since 80 people attended the inaugural meeting 10 years ago. Membership now sits at around 45 and the group has had to relocate to larger premises and build more space to accommodate its equipment and community work. “We’re just all looking forward to getting back into it,” Tom said.

Dr Adam fled Nazi Germany and was deported from England aboard the Dunera in 1940. He spent time interned at Tatura, before joining the University of Melbourne as an arts lecturer. The Tatura Museum has about 40 paintings from the highly regarded artist in its collection. Once coronavirus restrictions ease the museum will return to its usual opening hours, from 1-3 pm on weekdays and 2-4 pm on weekends.

Team builds at Finesse Since opening its doors in May 2017, Tatura’s Finesse Osteopathy has been steadily building its client base along with its reputation for providing holistic patient care. Originally business founder Emila O’Connor was a solo operator but she has since expanded the team to include qualified osteopaths Ashleigh Tunchon, who is currently on maternity leave, and Daniel Puglia, along with intern Steven Zarka.

supported the growth of the business, with the addition of new practitioners ensuring locals could receive treatment when they most needed it.

Emila said Finesse Osteopathy focused on providing quality hands-on manual therapy to those with musculoskeletal complaints including neck and back pain, sports injuries and pregnancyrelated pain.

With 10 years of experience, Emila has a keen interest in neck and back pain including headaches, is passionate about women’s health - especially those with pregnancy-related pain - and in recent years has been treating babies.

“We are very holistic in our approach and are always looking to find the cause of a condition rather than just focusing on the symptomatic area, this is so that we can prevent reoccurrence,” Emila said.

In 2017, Daniel participated in the SALT Health Solutions program, which saw him travel to India and work alongside orthopaedic surgeons that specialise in knees, to treat postoperative and non-surgical patients.

Treatment techniques include soft-tissue massage, manipulation, mobilisation techniques, advanced stretching techniques and dry needling, as well as taping techniques and exercises to assist with rehabilitation.

He has worked as a sports trainer, where the goal was to optimise player performance, and his group fitness gym background has given him the skills to create rehabilitation exercise programs.

Emila said positive outcomes for patients and subsequent word of mouth had

Tatura CAPITAL WORKS DURING 2020

X-RAY AND PATHOLOGY SERVICES

It has been a busy year and everyone at Tatura Hospital & Parkvilla Aged Care Facility and we continue to be well supported by our community and The Community Reference Committee (CRC) during these unprecedented times. We have had some significant upgrades and capital improvements $80,000 made possible from the CRC and Ladies Auxiliary’s recent fundraising efforts. This has included replacement of much of the furniture including bedroom, lounge room and foyer furniture as well as the conversion of a window into a doorway, enabling easy access for residents into the garden courtyard. The CRC have also funded the purchasing of two electric recliners and a sofa bed to enable family members to sleep beside their loved ones who are receiving palliative care.

Next step for cleaning business Starting out as a one-person operation four years ago, Reid Carpet Cleaning has experienced steady growth and is now taking an exciting new step. Owner Michael Reid, together with the four casual staff he employs, is expanding the range of services to include commercial cleaning. Reid Commercial Cleaning will operate alongside the original business offering a thorough and professional service for residential clients through

to offices, schools, public facilities, retail and industrial premises. It’s a natural progression for an enterprise that was founded with second-hand equipment and coldcalled real estate agents offering endof-lease and vacate cleans for tenants and home sellers.

“That was one of the things that appealed to me when I started, the fact I could build the business, develop relationships with clients and add additional services,” Michael said.

“It will give the opportunity for regular, ongoing and reoccurring work, which will help grow the business, and allow me to develop processes and systems.

He has regularly invested in new and upgraded equipment, which will allow a seamless transition to the scope of commercial work that can be undertaken.

“I see this as having the potential to take professional cleaning services to a broader range of clients.”

Michael said the team was COVID-19 prepared and offered contract or flexible month-to-month programs that included regular cleaning, disinfecting and re-stocking of commercial premises as well as periodic carpet and window cleaning. The business already has experience in the commercial space, having cleaned Sacred Heart Primary School in Tatura for the past 14 months, and more recently the refurbished Tatura FoodWorks supermarket, which opened its doors in early September.

Michael Reid is taking his business to the next level.

“Expanding into commercial cleaning is a challenge I’m ready to take on,” Michael said.

There is also the possibility of creating more opportunities for current employees, and eventually expanding the team, as the need arises. Servicing the Goulburn Valley, but predominantly his home town of Tatura and Shepparton, Michael said Reid Carpet Cleaning specialised in steam cleaning of carpets, rugs, upholstery and vehicle interiors, as well as cleaning tiles, grout and windows. Michael said that while he was ready for the next step in managing and growing the business, he was determined to retain a positive work/ life balance to enjoy time with wife Jess and their four sons, aged four, five, seven and eight.

New home for One Sweet Baker Talented Tatura baker Jenaya Bell has realised a long-held dream and established her own commercial kitchen. The owner of One Sweet Baker now has a purpose-built space in which to create her tempting cakes, slices and treats.

enough for two eight-inch cakes in each; with the new mixer I can get 15 eight-inch cakes out of one batch,” Jenaya said.

Decked out with shiny foodgrade stainless steel benches, storage, fridges and commercial oven and mixing equipment, the new kitchen will allow Jenaya to significantly upscale her growing business.

During the peak wedding season Jenaya bakes 30 to 40 cakes each week, which are then trimmed, stacked and decorated to the individual briefs of local couples.

In the planning stages for about two years, Jenaya’s family helped transform a section of the shed in her backyard, thus separating her business from her home. A commercial oven has more than double the baking capacity of her existing domestic oven and paired with an enormous mixer - with a 20-litre bulk capacity - has been a “game changer.” “I was using two standard KitchenAids, and I could only mix

“I love all aspects of what I do, but the wedding cakes are probably my favourite,” Jenaya said.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced Jenaya to “think on her feet” and come up with new and inventive ways of supplying her loyal customers with freshly baked goodies. One Sweet Baker’s website has an online order function for regular deliveries of sweet boxes filled with customised cookies, cupcakes, brownies, mini-cheesecakes, yo-yo biscuits and slices.

“I deliver and assemble the cakes, so I get to see the whole wedding set up, it’s really special and I feel so privileged to be a part of the wedding day.”

“I do have my tried and true recipes, but I also like to experiment with new flavours and combinations to keep me on my toes, and create something different for my customers,” Jenaya said.

Aside from wedding cakes Jenaya custom-designs cakes for all occasions, arranges sweet grazing tables or dessert buffets for events, and supplies two local cafes, Shepparton’s Stellar Coffee and Tatura’s Coffee+, with tempting treats.

A self-confessed sweet tooth, Jenaya did a school-based apprenticeship with Little Gourmet Food Company in Shepparton and worked there for five years before taking a break and trying her hand in an administration role.

In 2018, after realising baking was her passion, she started her own business, mainly baking for family friends. “I was still working full-time but after a few months I quit my job and hoped for the best,” Jenaya said.

Grants for business Tatura businesses can access funding as part of Greater Shepparton City Council's Economic Response to COVID-19 Package. TATURA’S Booming

Tatura property market remains strong Tatura’s solid real estate market continues to power along, both within the town and the rural surrounds. Kevin Hicks Real Estate auctioneer and director Kevin Hicks said several members of his firm’s team had strong ties to the town and knew first-hand of the many positive benefits of living and working there. “Tatura is a fully-serviced country town that has retained its strong community spirit,” Kevin said. “Location underpins all real estate values and Tatura offers you easy

access to anywhere in the Goulburn Valley. “So, to live there, you can enjoy that country town atmosphere, and easily travel to Shepparton or Kyabram for work if you need to,” he said. A continued key driver of the town’s prosperity is in its manufacturing capability - with Bega Cheese and Unilever as large-scale

“That strong business activity is very important for Tatura,” Kevin said.

Kevin said the Northlinks Estate development, for which his firm was a marketing partner, had virtually sold out and had been a real success story.

Large numbers of employees requiring accommodation underpinned the residential housing market, while flourishing small businesses benefited from workers spending their wages in the town.

“Northlinks has brought a lot of young families to Tatura, and that’s been really important because they then become the nucleus of the sporting clubs, community groups and schools,” Kevin said.

employers - as well as being the headquarters of Goulburn-Murray Water.

Another demographic seeking out the country town atmosphere was retiring farmers who are keen to trade a life on the land for a more urban lifestyle, but with all services and sporting needs within easy reach. As a result, new residential listings are attracting above-average levels of inquiry with some properties exceeding price expectations. Rural sales were also on the move, Kevin said, especially land suitable for horticultural and vegetable production. The renovated Devonleigh House in Tatura exceeded price expectations when sold at auction earlier this year. Picture: Rodney Braithwaite

“Some of the soil types around Tatura are excellent for that type of intensive production,” he said.

Solving the e-waste problem What are your options when your glitchy computer finally dies, your printer has printed its last page or your television needs to be upgraded? You can’t throw these items in the bin, and if you don’t have a trailer, or the time to take them to the tip, you’ll end up with a pile of waste that’s no good to anyone. That’s where the new business GV Re-Cycle can help.

Old televisions, computers, radios, CD players, laptops, mobile phones, washing machines and whitegoods are dismantled for their electrical components, circuit boards and wiring and sold either for scrap or for repair.

Owner Troy Beecroft aims to take what is generally considered rubbish and salvages the valuable components for recycling, resale or if feasible repair.

“There’s really nothing I won’t collect,” Troy said.

Troy came up with the idea of recycling electrical waste after spending many years dismantling and repairing equipment he uses in his garden maintenance business. He also doesn’t like waste.

Troy is hoping to establish regular collection cycles with larger organisations that routinely upgrade equipment and has a large storage shed where he can take things apart ready for recycling.

‘’It all began with fixing up my own tools - I just don’t like throwing things away,’’ Troy said.

Items such as laptops end up with an e-waste company in Melbourne while much of the metal he salvages goes

to Future Metals in Shepparton for recycling. In fact, the only things he can’t accept for free are refrigerants and older CRT televisions because of the cost of disposal.

If people have electrical goods to dispose of Troy can be contacted on 0488 248 812. To keep updated on what he collects, follow the GV Re-Cycle Facebook page.

Value-add to your home Outdoor track blinds can increase the usable living space of your home for a fraction of the price of adding additional rooms. Tatura Blinds owner Andrew Speed said savvy homeowners were elevating the lifestyle factor of their properties by embracing the affordable option of installing blinds in their outdoor alfresco areas. "The blinds give you a whole new area of the house you can use year-round, and you don't lose your view. You can see out, but no-one can see in," Andrew said. A true family business, Tatura Blinds has been operated by Andrew and his wife Lyana for about 18 months. In that short time it has experienced rapid growth, with the workload increasing about six-fold. Andrew said social media, advertising and word-of-mouth had a part to play, along with his commitment to sourcing only the best and mostly Australian-made products.

"It's important to get the little things right, offer a same-day quote and turn up on time," Andrew said. "I'm also very selective about the products. I wouldn't sell anything I wouldn't be happy to have in my own home." Custom made for each individual job, the outdoor track blinds and indoor roller blinds can be motorised to operate automatically from a remote-control unit, and timber and PVC plantation shutters are gaining popularity for the resort-style look they add to homes. The next "big thing", according to Andrew, is blinds that open and close on voice-activated commands. Andrew's practical skills and eye for detail from previous work at Tatura

Milk Industries and as a bricklayer have translated into his new role. "I was also lucky that the owner I bought the business from stayed on to work with me. He had the business for 25 years, so turning up to work was like going to trade school," Andrew said. Every home is different, and every homeowner has different ideas, and that ensures no two days or jobs are the same.

But one thing that is consistent is Andrew's operating process, which sees him oversee the job from start to finish. "I take the measurements, show customers the samples and then come back to install the blinds," Andrew said. "I think customers like the idea that the owner of the business is doing the install and not a contractor. My name is on the job, so I want it done properly."

A busy first year for bakery It’s been a hectic first 12 months in business for Tatura Bakery and Lunches owner Nicole Kelly, and that’s mostly exactly how she likes it. Nicole thrives on being busy, and after taking over the long-established business a year ago she has certainly experienced the highs and lows of being her own boss, culminating in a first-birthday celebration on August 14.

Her priority is to keep her staff employed and focus on getting through each day so the business can once again flourish when restrictions are eased.

After a “dream run” at the start a busy Christmas trading period followed by an influx of visitors to the town for the International Dairy Week event in January, the coronavirus pandemic hit and forced a sharp decline in trading, customers and, ultimately, income. Community sport ceased, and so too did the regular supply to seven district football and netball clubs; funeral numbers were capped, decimating the catering side of the business; and many of her regular weekday lunch buyers moved to working from home. But that hasn’t stopped Nicole from putting a smile on her face, remaining positive and keeping the doors open.

While customers can’t enjoy a dine-in experience, they can buy takeaway food such as a selection of hot meals from the bain marie, full bakery lines including pies, bread, cakes and slices, as well as coffee and milkshakes. Tatura Bakery and Lunches also offers a home delivery service.

Nicole Kelly has celebrated a busy first year in business.

Nicole has her eyes firmly on the future, and a new contemporary black and white logo is now featured on staff uniforms and in-store packaging and will soon be emblazoned on the external signage and two delivery vans. “I’m determined to still be operating when things turn around. This business has been here forever and a day and I don’t want to be the one who closes the doors,” Nicole said.

A treasure trove of ideas Sharryn Smith is one of those talented people who can take an item most would consider junk and refashion it into something functional or decorative. “Repurposing is my passion; I see something and think, ‘what can I do with that?’” Sharryn said. That skill and long-held interest has given rise to Sharryn,s latest business venture Tinkers Twist Tatura, which opened its doors in early July. The delightful space, at 148 Hogan St, is filled with an eclectic array of scrounged items that have been upcycled into one-of-a-kind pieces for the house or garden. Reupholstered chairs and stools sit alongside quirky home storage ideas, unique tables and occasional furniture and all manner of other interesting bits and pieces. “I love finding broken bits and putting them together to create something new,” Sharryn said. “I'll often take five old things and make three new things out of them.”

Sharryn Smith has created a shop filled with a treasure trove of interesting and eclectic items. Pictures: Megan Fisher

For the time being her major source of treasure - the recycling section at the tip - is closed due to COVID-19 restrictions but Sharryn continues to source pieces to ensure there is always something new and interesting in store. She has also opened the space to other like-minded artists and creators, to offer them an outlet to sell their creations following the cessation of markets, again due to the coronavirus pandemic. Drawing from Tatura and surrounds, Sharryn has gathered a collection of talented people offering topiary animals fashioned from miniature ivy, cement miniature gnomes, metal garden art, timber signs and candles. Developments near completion The large-scale construction scene in Tatura has been a hive of activity in 2020, with several major projects nearing completion. A $100,000 Federal Government grant, announced in August, was the final piece in the funding puzzle to complete the $2 million Tatura Library redevelopment. Tatura Library Community Fundraising Committee chairman Carl Walters said the additional funds would help buy the best furniture, shelving and fittings to create the modern library the community deserved. “We were set a $100,000 community fundraising target to help with the furniture and fit out and were well on our way in March when COVID-19 hit,” Carl said. “Fundraising came to a halt as the temporary library and businesses closed. The community has been hit hard financially, making fundraising difficult.” Goulburn Valley Libraries chief executive Kevin Preece said the new

library would effectively double the size of the existing facility with stateof-the-art technology and equipment. Bendigo-based company BLR Provincial Construction is undertaking the project, with completion on track for mid-October and a scheduled November opening. In other news, the Tatura Fire Brigade expects to move in to its new $2.22 million fire station in time for the upcoming fire season.

An artist’s impression of the soon-to-be-completed Tatura Library.

Trevor said a key feature was the station's local command function, which gave the brigade the capacity to control local fires where other brigades were involved, all from inside the new building. A.S. Villani Building Contractors, Kialla, has carried out the work.

Brigade captain Trevor Franklin said the build had run smoothly thanks to the enormous amount of pre-planning carried out at brigade and CFA level.

At 104 Hogan St, the development of a modern new convenience, on a once-unkempt parcel of land, is taking shape.

The new facility will replace the existing one - built in 1971 - with space for three trucks, improved IT and communications and enhanced facilities for the 25 brigade members.

Tat Wash is scheduled to open in November and will incorporate one automatic laser car wash and three manual bays, along with a dog wash station and vacuum bays.

The manual bays can cater for caravans, boats and trailers, as well as vehicles. Owner Jamie Fawcett said the facility would also be equipped with a vending machine dispensing drinks, snacks and automotive products and accessories and there were plans to develop a café. Jamie said he was looking forward to the facility becoming operational to further increase the level of services available in Tatura, as well as support the town's community and sporting organisations. Once construction is complete the site will be beautified with landscaping in line with council streetscape directives.

Store manager Craig Bramley welcomes customers to the revamped supermarket.

A long-awaited opening The revamped Tatura FoodWorks supermarket opened its doors on September 9, giving customers a long-awaited glimpse of the modernised interior. Under the new ownership of the Reddrop Group the refurbished store has restored Tatura to a twosupermarket town - a status enjoyed by locals for generations, and promoting competition and choice. Store manager Craig Bramley has 33 years' experience in the retail supermarket industry and grew up in Tatura, even working in the supermarket that previously occupied the prominent corner site. He leads an experienced management team and oversees a staff of 40, mostly from the local area.

“Supporting local is very important to us - we have employed local people and engaged local trades to complete the fit-out,” Craig said. “And where possible we will be supporting local farmers and producers by stocking local produce.” The contemporary façade reveals a fresh, easy-to-navigate interior offering a full-line supermarket and produce, meat, delicatessen, dairy, frozen, bakery and liquor sections. An in-house team of butchers will operate seven days a week and in a first

for FoodWorks in Tatura, fresh fish will be available every week. Five registers will ensure a smooth transition to get your groceries packed and out of the store, and for a healthy treat there is a fresh juice machine. Sustainability has been factored into the planning with solar power panels occupying the entire roof space of the building, and for customer convenience, the shopping trolleys are manufactured from recycled milk bottles, instead of the traditional metal.

Tatura FoodWorks will trade seven days a week from 7 am to 8 pm and has secured an extended liquor licence for those hours. Craig said locals had been eagerly anticipating the opening of the revamped supermarket and a raft of specials were planned to celebrate the occasion. The Reddrop Group has been involved in supermarket retailing for more than 50 years and has built its business on taking a communityminded and family-orientated approach to customer service.

Support grows A new support group has been established in Tatura to assist those who are feeling anxious, lonely, depressed or stressed. Overseen by Grow - a communitybased organisation centred around peer-support groups - the regular sessions aim for social inclusion and offer participants confidentiality and anonymity. Grow field worker Lindy Croucher said the group would meet face-toface at Tatura Community House once COVID-19 restrictions eased, but in the meantime it was offering support via Zoom every Wednesday from 10 am to noon. Lindy said Grow was established in Sydney in 1957 and had helped tens of thousands of Australians recover from mental illness through a unique program of mutual support and personal development. Meetings are run by recovering and trained Grow members who have gone through the program

and volunteered to lead the groups and provide a sense of purpose and community built from friendships fostered between members. “There is an opportunity to share and find solutions to life's many challenges with people going through similar experiences,” Lindy said. Grow partners with federal, state and local governments, health providers, community mental health organisations, donors and sponsors and peak bodies of the mental health and community sectors. Technical help is available to those who wish to join the Tatura group while it is operating via Zoom, or to connect with other Grow groups that are usually online. For more information, phone Lindy on 0448 052 769.

New doctor in town Tatura Doctors has welcomed a new team member to help provide quality health care to the community. Dr Naga Battershetty comes to the area with experience in paediatrics and emergency medicine and is looking forward to the new challenge of supporting patients with chronic health conditions. The small practice and opportunity to build relationships with the people for whom he is providing ongoing care, were key reasons for Naga opting to work in Tatura. “It's a beautiful little town, and there will be a lot of opportunity for patient interaction,” he said. “Having the time to talk to my patients and support them is important.” Naga undertook medical training in China before returning to his home country of India and working in the specialised areas of emergency, paediatrics and neo-natal intensive care.

The Federal Government is committed to supporting regional communities across Nicholls. I was thrilled to recently inspect the Tatura Library redevelopment and announce $100,000 of funding that will be spent on fitting out the facility, including all new modern furniture and shelving. Without this, the community was going to have to fundraise the money and given current economic conditions due to COVID-19, I’m glad the Federal Government was able to relieve locals of this responsibility. Once completed later this year, the state-ofthe-art library will be a tremendous asset for not only Tatura, but the entire region. Congratulations to everyone involved in this exciting project. The construction of a new walking and cycling path at Tatura is also in the works thanks to $1 million of federal funding that

was this month made available to Greater Shepparton City Council via the Drought Communities Program. I look forward to working with them to ensure the project is finished as soon as possible so the community can enjoy the benefits. And as we continue to grapple with the impacts of COVID-19, I urge everyone to support local businesses wherever possible. We all know the benefits of shopping locally: the money we spend stays in the community and is spent again and again. Now more than ever, we need to shop local and support the businesses that support us.

the emergency department at Mildura Base Hospital. The recruitment of Dr Naga brings the number of doctors at the clinic to three. Dr Pablo Chakma is the other full-time doctor and Dr Pranali Shah sees patients on Mondays and Fridays. Practice receptionist Nita Collihole said the general family clinic offered patients access to male and female doctors, as well as a number of visiting specialists, health care providers and services. A dietitian, psychologist and podiatrist are available, along with ECG and spirometry facilities, immunisations, diabetes care and minor surgical procedures. The clinic is open from 9 am to 5.30 pm weekdays and from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. Nita said the clinic would offer seven-day-a-week appointments from November, when it will open on Sundays.
