Committee gearing up for another big trucking event The Deniliquin Truck Show & Industry Expo will be jam-packed with trucking action for the fourth annual event this year.

The expo weekend format will remain the same — the Wall of Fame dinner on the Friday night (Sept. 7) followed by the expo itself on Saturday, September 8, and the Memorial Service at the Wall of Fame monument in Davidson St on Sunday morning.

A highlight of the weekend is the Truck Show Expo held at Deniliquin’s Memorial Park, which includes the sought after show ‘n’ shine awards for trucks and motorbikes.

The Truck of the Show accolade is once again expected to be hotly contested.

Other categories include People’s Choice, Best Truck Under 3 Years, Best Truck 4-9 Years, Best Truck 10-25 Years, Best Truck 26-39 Years, Best Truck 40+, Best Local Truck, Best Fleet (3 or more) and Best Rigid, and the ‘Muscles’ Gray Memorial.

Motorbike categories include Harley of the Show, People’s Choice, Best Vintage, Best Customised Bike and Best Presented Road Bike.

There will be trailer displays, trade sites, and the chance to learn more about the Trans-Help Foundation and other driver safety bodies.

The young ones will also be catered for, with a mini sideshow of novelty events.

Expo committee president John Creenaune said it will be a similar format to last year’s highly successful event. ‘‘I feel that if it isn’t broken then don’t fix it,’’ he said. ‘‘The only change from last year is that we unfortunately won’t have the Big Boys Toys event this year. But there is still plenty to do at the expo.’’

The expo is also planning to include trade stalls and music and family entertainment.

Mr Creenaune says the weekend bolsters Deniliquin’s already vibrant calendar of events, with the potential to attract thousands of people.

Industry Memorial Service to continue Deniliquin Truck Show & Industry Expo will once again hold a Memorial Service on the Sunday morning of the annual event this year.

The memorial was added last year to specifically pay tribute to locals from the industry who have passed away.

Students learn about heavy vehicles A truck driver’s perspective of the road was introduced to Deniliquin High School Year 10 students as part of the school’s annual driver education program in November last year.

The week-long program had an expanded focus on heavy vehicles and sharing the road.

A truck was supplied for the program by CMV Truck and Bus in Wodonga, with some students given the chance to drive the heavy vehicle under the watchful eye of driving instructor Bill Manton.

Driver education program committee member Jenny Fellows said discussions will take place over coming months to see if the truck experience can be provided in 2018 and beyond. ‘‘Having the experience available for the students was opportunistic, through our (Jenny and husband Paul’s) involvement in the transport industry. ‘‘Andrew Thompson (from CMV Truck and Bus in Wodonga) is very passionate

Mr Manton said the whole idea of putting the students in the driver’s seat of the truck was to show them how they as motorists can help a truck

driver and other road users remain safe. ‘‘We put them in the driver’s seat to show them how many blind spots there are and to give them an idea of just how difficult it can be for truck drivers (to see other vehicles),’’ Mr Manton said. ‘‘We also talked about the weights we carry on the truck and how long it can take for a truck to stop.’’

The Deniliquin High School driver education program also gets the students behind the wheel of a car under the guidance of Deni Sporting Car Club members at their local track.

The students also watched a mock crash rescue and heard about the potential dangers on the road from members of the local community who had survived serious crashes.

Freighters delivers Foodbank rice For the fifth year in a row, Deniliquin Freighters is doing its part to help hunger relief charity Foodbank.

It will help deliver 125 tonnes of SunRice rice to Sydney and Melbourne to help feed 3.6 million Australians who experience food insecurity.

The local transport company has donated all freight costs.

Deni Freighters general manager Russell Tait said it was one way the business could help its fellow Australians. ‘‘Being the national carrier and deliverer of SunRice products it just seems like the right thing to do,’’ he said. ‘‘We just want to help where we can and so far it’s had a great outcome. It helps us promote SunRice as well.’’

The initiative is organised

by SunRice employees Dennis Bagnara and Jim Alateras.

Mr Bagnara, who is SunRice’s Australia and New Zealand operations manager, said SunRice values what

The SunRice donation is a

true, whole-of-supply-chain effort from the growers who generously donate the rice, to the employees in the SunRice distribution centres who pack and organise transport through to Deniliquin Freighters.

Foodbank will send the rice to every Australian capital city and it will then be distributed to over 2,600 frontline charities and 1,750 schools, according to need.

and Deniliquin Freighters for their ongoing generosity. ‘‘Being a key staple food product, we really value the generous donation of rice from SunRice. Unfortunately, due to the increase in food insecurity, we are forced to turn away 65,000 people who are seeking help each month, so this large donation will help us tackle this rising trend of Australians in need.’’

Fire truck tribute for dad Fiona Petersen has always had a fire truck in her life.

Her father Ken Rose was a firefighter since before she was born, and he took pride in his job as the Deniliquin NSW Fire & Rescue engine keeper.

When Ken tragically passed away late in 2017 — on his way home from a meeting at the fire station — it left two gaping holes in Fiona’s life.

In an effort to fill one of them, and to pay tribute to her much loved father, Fiona has purchased a 1969 Bedford fire truck.

Her intention is to restore the truck with assistance from her husband Warrick and use it as a showpiece and hopefully a mobile museum of firefighting in NSW. ‘‘Mum and I were both looking for fire trucks so we could have one for the family,’’ Fiona said. ‘‘We both wanted a Bedford, but I thought it might actually be easier to find an International Acco, another type on engine dad worked on. ‘‘Warrick and I found this one in Perth — it was among a number of trucks a woman there was selling. ‘‘Ours was not the only offer she had for the truck, but when we told her the connection with dad and that’s why we wanted it she was happy to have it go to a ‘firie’ family.’’

The Petersens purchased the truck for $7000 and said they have not yet done any estimates on the investment required for the restoration.

‘‘I’d like to take it to truck shows and show the children what firefighting used to be like. ‘‘I would also be happy to take it down to the Deniliquin fire station when it has open days.’’

The Petersens enlisted the help of Deniliquin company Lumbars Transport to get the fire truck back to Deniliquin.

Local transport industry legends Three transport industry icons were inducted into the Deniliquin and District Transport Industry Wall of Fame late last year.

Allan Watson, Neil Scott and Ludvik ‘Victa’ Lumbar (dec) were honoured for their contributions, as part of the three-day Deniliquin Truck Show & Industry Expo.

They were selected from 11 nominees by an independent judging panel, and all three boast impressive careers in the industry.

For Neil Scott, the purchase of his first truck in 1950 was a means of making money in his new home town of Deniliquin.

This turned into an almost 40 year career for Mr Scott, which also gave his children an introduction into the industry and the business world. ‘‘I came from a station about 90 miles the other side of Balranald and eventually my sister took over the property and I came to Deniliquin to live,’’ he said. ‘‘I always had an interest in trucks. The opportunity turned up (to buy one) and I was

Mr Scott started modestly, but grew his business to a fleet of eight trucks, at the same time as growing his family.

Like Mr Scott, Mathoura Bulk Grain & Fertilizers owner Allan Watson also boasts a 40 plus year career and also has depots in Deniliquin and Echuca.

Mr Watson said he has been involved in the transport industry since he was a youngster.

‘‘I bought my first truck when I was 17,’’ he said. ‘‘I couldn’t drive it, and it was a six or seven tonne tiptruck.’’

Mr Watson has been involved in a variety of areas in the transport industry over the years from carting stock to fertilizer, and is still actively involved in the everyday running of his business. ‘‘The industry is important for the whole community and the country — we would be lost without it,’’ he said.

The backbone of our nation’s transporting indus-

try includes pioneers like Mr Lumbar, who arrived in Australia on January 11, 1954 from Yugoslavia. He passed away in 2001.

Mr Lumbar arrived in Deniliquin in mid-March 1961 with his AA160 Inter with a 28-ft strap trailer.

In Deniliquin, he cut 12 tonne loads of firewood with his wife by his side, and then started the 10-hour trip to Melbourne to deliver his freight.

From there, Mr Lumbar began loading freight and slowly he began to add trucks.

In the late 1960s he moved the business to Sloane St, and by this time the Deniliquin to Melbourne service was ‘‘like clockwork’’, running up to three trucks a day.

Frank Lumbar said his dad’s contributions to the industry are ‘‘invaluable’’. ‘‘Victa was the first carrier in Deni to make general freight a priority and do it successfully,’’ he said.

Frank said his dad would be ‘‘pretty proud’’ to receive the award.

Truck driving will always Deniliquin’s Fiona Semple will always have a strong love for truck driving.

The 43 year-old, now working on a potato farm near Deni, started in the industry when she was 25 years old.

It was a steep learning curve for Fiona, who was ‘‘too bored sitting in the passenger seat’’ when her then husband was driving a Western Star truck in Western Australia. ‘‘I got my licence and was in the driver’s seat straight away,’’ she said. ‘‘I actually started driving a truck with a triple trailer. ‘‘The truck I learnt to drive in was called ‘Living on the Edge’ and had a 435 Cat with a 30 speed Spicer gearbox. ‘‘Sadly it burnt to the ground in South Australia. ‘‘Back then all the trucks were manual. We had to listen closely to the motor and revs to make sure everything was running smoothly. ‘‘My ex-husband and I did a lot of slow dirt work and drove along some tough roads.’’

During the majority of her driving days, Fiona drove two trucks — a 1997 Western Star and a 1989 Mack Valueliner, with both operating as three-trailer road trains.

The Western Star was eventually named after Fiona, dubbed ‘Warrior Princess’ as a tribute to her nickname ‘Xena’. ‘‘I received the nickname Xena from a mate up north,’’ she explained. ‘‘It just kind of came out of his mouth and it stuck.

because of my black hair, olive skin and the fact that I’d just get in there and get the job done without asking for help. ‘‘I’ve always loved a challenge and no matter how hard the job was I’d do it. ‘‘I’ve changed tyres in 50 degree heat, even having the jack sometimes start sinking into the road because of the heat. ‘‘But there were never any complaints of anything being too hard for me.’’

While mainly driving the Western Star, Fiona said she loved driving the ‘89 Mack. ‘‘I’ve driven Western Stars and Kenworth trucks, but I really enjoyed the V8 Mack,’’ she said. ‘‘I always drove in heavy spec trucks and have had plenty of fond memories on the road. ‘‘I remember when I was at Barkly Homestead (NT) I was changing a tyre and a bus pulled up. ‘‘The bus driver asked me if I would mind if people could take photos of the truck and I jokingly said ‘yes, for $5 each’. ‘‘All the tourists started handing me money and I was trying to give it back to them but because of the language barrier they didn’t understand me,’’ she said with a laugh. ‘‘I’ve also been able to see so many amazing parts of the country that most wouldn’t working other jobs.’’ ~ continued next page

be close to Fiona’s heart ~ from previous page In 2001 Fiona returned to Deni, working for McNaughts where she started carting rice.

At the time she was pregnant, starting with driving an Aerodyne before changing to a bonneted truck, which was easier for her to get in and out of.

Fiona took 12 months off after giving birth to her daughter Bianca, before returning to McNaughts.

By 2004, the demands of truck driving became difficult to juggle, so Fiona decided it was time to step away from the job she loves.

Luckily in more recent years she’s been able to get back in the driver’s seat with her partner and truck driver David Hemphill taking her with him for some of his driving jobs. ‘‘He lets me drive sometimes,’’ she said. ‘‘He said to me that he doesn’t get in the bunk for

just anyone, so it’s nice that he trusts my driving skills. ‘‘When my kids are a little older I’m hoping to head over to Western Australia to work in the mines. ‘‘But right now family is the top priority.’’

Fiona’s children — Bianca, Dustin and Angus — share her love of trucks, always looking forward to the Deniliquin Truck Show & Industry Expo each year. ‘‘Truck driving has been a very rewarding career,’’ Fiona said. ‘‘I’ve been to very isolated parts of the country, been bogged plenty of times and also met a lot of amazing ■ Fiona behind the wheel. people along the way. ‘‘I’ve made a lot of mates that have stuck with me, that I talk to nearly every day through the trucking industry. ‘‘I have good memories and bad memories, and there have been ups and downs, but it will be one job I will always love.’’

The Wall of Fame is an initiative of the Deniliquin Truck Show & Industry Expo committee.

Nominees can be from Deniliquin, Finley, Berrigan, Barooga, Barham, Tocumwal, Hay, Mathoura, Moama, Moulamein, Barham, Conargo, Jerilderie and all areas in between.

The Wall of Fame will recognise anyone who has

made a difference, contribution or had an impact on the local trucking industry, and posthumous nominations are welcome.

All nominations that meet the criteria will be determined by an independent judging panel.

those who made their mark on the industry. ‘‘We need to recognise everyone working in the industry that came before us.

Women in the transport industry are being invited to a special conference aimed at ‘Creating Connections’, to be held in Melbourne in May. Transport Women Australia Limited chair Jacquelene Brotherton — who was a guest speaker at the 2017 Deniliquin & District Transport Hall of Fame dinner — said the aim of the weekend is to reconnect with old friends and create new connections.

The conference will be held at Mantra Tullamarine from May 18 to 20 this year. ‘‘You’ll hear the latest from leaders in transport both in Australia and internationally, and share your ideas with a diverse and influential audience,’’ Ms Brotherton (pictured) said. ‘‘You’ll have an enjoyable and informative weekend with interesting speakers, our wonderful massage and coffee booths to keep you going, the return of our health check booth, and a new exciting addition.’’

Topics to be discussed include Creating Connections for Success, Safety Management Systems, and How to be

a Super Smart Woman, as well as the ‘Wheels’ Badge program to promote the transport industry to the next generation of women.

There will also be a session on the Superior Heavy Vehicle Licensing Program’s female driver course, and participants will hear from leaders in transportation as well as participate in networking luncheons and dinners.

The keynote address will be from CEO and president/ founder of Women in Trucking USA, Ellen Voie.

NHVR: Be ready for ‘Chain’ changes The National Heavy Vehicle Register’s welltravelled Chain of Responsibility (CoR) manager, Kym Farquharson-Jones, has been traversing Australia outlining to many of the 165,000 businesses that make up the heavy vehicle supply chain the forthcoming changes to CoR. “These changes are a significant step forward in recognising that everyone in the supply chain has a role to play in heavy vehicle safety,” Ms Farquharson-Jones says.

While addressing primary producers who she said had an important role to play in supporting safe and reliable road transport, Ms Farquharson-Jones’ message was equally important for other industry sectors who are affected by CoR and the changes due mid this year.

“Amendments to the CoR laws coming later this year will align the existing laws more closely with workplace health and safety provisions,” she said.

“This means that all parties

in the chain . . . must proactively reduce risks related to the safety of heavy vehicle transport tasks. Although the laws will change, they will still only apply to activities that a person or business has responsibility for and could influence. In other words, no-one will be liable for breaches they cannot control.”

Some of the warnings she had for primary producers apply equally across the entire industry. For example: ■ Avoid requests, instructions, requirements or demands that may influence the driver to speed or drive while fatigued — whether written in a contract or made verbally.

■ Ensure loads are ready on time so that a driver is not unduly delayed and pressured to speed or exceed fatigue hours.

■ Ensure safe access, while on your property, for the heavy vehicles and advise drivers of any relevant local knowledge.

■ Ensure you consult with

your transporter and other parties in the chain when setting timeframes for pickup and delivery.

What else should parties in the chain do?

Ms Farquharson-Jones advises to use operators that provide safe and compliant transport activities. ‘‘Consult your provider to ensure any safety risks are understood and steps are taken to mitigate those risks,’’ she says.

And if you operate your own heavy vehicle?

The most relevant areas of responsibility for you will include: ■ Know what and how much is loaded onto your vehicle, how the weight is distributed and how the load is restrained.

■ Ensure that the vehicle is fit for purpose, mechanically safe and legally able to be used on a road.

■ Don’t drive while fatigued and don’t work longer than you are allowed to by the law.

■ Understand the safety risks that your activities pose to the transport task — including packing goods for transport, scheduling travel and delivery times, and the impacts of delays in loading and unloading trucks.

■ Avoid requests, instructions, requirements or demands that may influence the driver to speed or drive while fatigued whether written in a contract or made verbally.
