Plan it together Planning your wedding can be time consuming and, let’s be honest, at times, stressful.
All too often brides-to-be assume the lion’s share of the planning and forget to include their groomto-be. It is important that the groom is part of the planning from the very beginning. Date, location, timing, theme, guests, menu, attire – all these choices should reflect both of you, as a couple, as you begin married life together. Your beau should feel he has input into the big day, and while he may not want to be a part of every decision, try to find things for him to focus on that cater to his strengths. Transport – this is a great area for the groom to take charge. Share your ideas, but let him indulge his dream-wedding mode of travel for the big day. You may choose to draw the line a Harley Davidson (or not) but let your groom come up with two or three options and you can talk it over together before making a decision. ‘Suit’-able attire – Co-ordination of bridal party attire is crucial but your groom should still be able to have his say when it comes to his wedding day outfit. Hand him some bridal magazines and ask him to pick out a few things he likes. Take him shopping and let him try out some different styles. You want him to look dashing on the big day but you also want him to be comfortable. The honeymoon – planning your romantic getaway after the wedding is a great opportunity for the groom to take the reins. Of course, you should discuss the type of honeymoon you’d like, but why not encourage your beau to do some research, make bookings (after a quick check that you agree) and organise incidentals. In summary, your wedding day will be memory to share with your husband for a lifetime so make sure when you look back both of you share the satisfaction of knowing you worked to create that Make sure the groom feels a part of planning for your wedding day. One perfect day
Yarrawonga couple Tara and James middleTon look back on Their march, 2013 wedding wiTh absoluTe JoY.
For Tara (nee Ellis) the day was “absolutely perfect” and looking back seven months later she says she wouldn’t change a thing. “Everything went according to plan,” she said. “I look back at the photos and am just thrilled with everything.” Tara and James’ special day was captured timelessly by Rhonda Doyle from Cobram Photographics. The wedding began with an outdoor ceremony alongside the beautiful Murray River at one of the couple’s favourite spots, locally known as “the Green Patch”. “I loved the idea of getting married outside and all I kept hoping for was nice weather because to be honest we didn’t really have a back-up plan,” Tara said. Mother Nature held up her end of the bargain and the day was beautifully sunny, casting a lovely glow over the ceremony, the bridal party and guests and of course, the bride and groom. A beautiful reception followed and the couple delighted in sharing their special day with family and friends. Looking back, Tara said the key to a perfect wedding day was planning. “We got engaged around 18 months before the wedding and I started planning pretty much right away,” she said.
Tara and James with their bridal party on the banks of the beautiful Murray River. Cobram Photographics. “The most important things to start with are picking the date and booking your venue and band immediately – otherwise you might find you won’t be able to get what you want. “From then it’s just a matter of working through the planning stages – I’m a little bit a control freak and a good organiser so that helped.” Tara also had some extra special help from her mum.

“My mum is a wedding co-ordinator so I guess that was a big help,” she said. “Between the two of us we had everything sorted.” In a perfect end to the fairy tale story – Tara
and James are excitedly expecting their first child in March 2014, just a few days after their first anniversary.

The most important words your wedding vows will most likely be tHe
first time you stand before your family and friends and deClare your love for anotHer.
It’s the moment in every ceremony that purely and simply expresses the impending bond between two people.
So what do you say?
As with most wedding choices, there are no rights and wrongs when it comes to wedding vows. Should you opt for a church ceremony, you may be guided through a choice of traditional vows by your officiant that will form part of the religious ceremony. For many, the choice of traditional vows speaks directly to the sacred tradition of marriage and is often a nice homage to vows taken previously by parents or grandparents in the same church. Should you choose to have a wedding celebrant officiate at your wedding, there are a variety of options for your vows. Celebrants will often have a selection of traditional and more modern vows as examples that can help an engaged couple plan their ceremony. You can also use the internet as a resource for examples of wedding vows. Couples can take the time to sit and choose their vows together, or, they may opt to do so individually and keep the vows private until the ceremony as a special surprise for their betrothed. Whichever words you choose, do so carefully and with the confidence they will express everything you want to say to the person you’ve chosen to share your life with.

Men have choices If you speak to the experts It turns out that the Idea of matchIng the suIt to

“Typically the groom can wear whichever suit he likes and match the shirt and/or tie to his bride’s gown,” Craig Spencer from Origin Clothing Corowa said. “Current trends include the skinny tie and slimfitted suit, however it’s important to dress for your personal body type and style – what looks good on Hugh Jackman won’t suit everyone.” Shades of black, grey and charcoal are currently

in style with fashion-forward gentlemen favouring a conservative pin-stripe according to Craig. “Contrast trims can add some pizzazz and a splash of colour. “Grooms can either hire or buy their suit – unlike the wedding gown, a suit will probably be worn again in the future. “Groomsmen too can hire or buy their suit, though if the suits are all to be matching, hiring often makes the most economic sense,” he said. And what about matching the groomsmen’s ties and pocket squares to the bridesmaids or not? “Some bridal parties match and some choose not to, personal preference seems to be the order of the day,” Craig said. Wedding tradition or superstition? Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something blue – weddingS are filled with a
myriad of wedding traditionS and SuperStitionS.
Some seem to make sense, such as not allowing the groom to see the bride on the wedding day so he first sees her as she walks down the aisle toward him. Others may seem a little strange such as a bridesmaid keeping a slice of wedding cake under her pillow to dream of the man she will marry. While some of the more unusual traditions have petered out over the years, many lovely wedding traditions remain and still form important part of wedding day proceedings. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue is a good luck saying that dates back to the Victorian era. The old represents the brides link to her family, the new represents good luck

Sweet treats gone are the dayS of
brideS and groomS being limited to traditional
wedding cake flavourS or deSignS.
While some still enjoy the tradition of a lush, fruit cake for their wedding cake, others are opting for more modern flavours such as chocolate or caramel mudcake, hummingbird cake or a torte. Also popular at modern weddings is the use of cupcakes to build a wedding cake, allowing each guest to enjoy an individual sweet treat. For those with a very sweet tooth, the same principal can even be applied to donuts if you are after something completely different. Decoration has also evolved from the traditional white icing, topped with figurines or flowers, to themed wedding cakes, coloured cakes and anything the imagination can create. Whatever your choice, enjoy the day, have your cake and eat it too.
and success in future married life, the borrowed represents the support of friends and family on the wedding day and finally, something blue is a representation of faithfulness, purity and loyalty. Throwing rice, or confetti, after the wedding ceremony as the couple leaves the church dates back to ancient times and is meant to bestow fertility on the couple. The often enjoyed tradition of the bride throwing the bouquet stems from medieval Europe where it was considered lucky for single women to take home a piece of the bride’s wedding dress, often resulting in the bride’s gown being torn and left in tatters. The throwing of the bouquet was designed to appease that tradition and leave the lovely bride’s wedding dress in one piece. Cutting the wedding cake together as husband and wife, and sharing the first taste, is still an enjoyable part of many wedding receptions. The tradition is meant as a good omen for the couple’s hopes of conceiving a child.

The mother of the bride and mother of the groom
The moTher of bride and The moTher of The groom boTh play an imporTanT role on The wedding day and should be dressed beauTifully and eleganTly.
While the bride and groom take centre stage, the mothers must also dress-toimpress for the big day being careful not to take attention from the bridal party but to feel special and beautiful in their own right.
It is important that the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom choose outfits that complement the hues of the bridal party without clashing or being too similar – white and ivory are generally considered taboo not only for the mothers but also wedding guests. The mother of the bride should set aside a day, perhaps to share with her daughter, in the early stages of planning to select an outfit that co-ordinates well with the colour theme of the wedding. This could mean choosing a similar shade, but not an exact match, to the

colour of the bridesmaids or perhaps opting for a pattern that features the bridal party colour. It is also considered courtesy for the mother of the bride to liaise with the mother of the groom on the choice of outfit so as the two can avoid a clash of colours. Each important lady deserves an opportunity to shine on the wedding day and with careful planning and coordination everyone can feel beautiful and enjoy the event.

Take heirloom pieces with you – if you’ve decided you want to wear your grandmother’s teardrop necklace or another piece of sentimental jewellery; take it with you to your dress fitting to ensure the neckline of your gown accommodates your choice. Don’t be afraid of costume pieces – costume jewellery works well for many brides if you know what to look for. It can also save you a fortune – particularly if you are looking for bold, chunky necklaces or earrings that really stand out. Keep it simple – sometimes it’s tempting to overdo it with jewellery. Remember that
accessories still take a back seat to your overall appearance. Look for items that complement your style without making you look overdecorated. Gowns with intricate designs and lots of lace typically call for less ornate jewellery. Don’t forget the bridesmaids – If you want a co-ordinated look, work with your bridesmaids to select pieces that flatter everyone and suit both your gown and the bridesmaid dresses.

The perfect guest list There are no obligations Brides and grooms often feel some sort of obligation to invite certain people but don’t let these feelings of guilt sway or change who you want to invite to your wedding. Your guest list should consist of people you want to see on your special day and no one else. Let all of your guests and relatives (including parents) know right away that they are not to invite any extra people without your consent. Cut the extras If your guest list is looking a bit too large for your liking, it’s important to set the ground rules so that both you and your groom know exactly who you should invite and under what circumstances. Try to make it not as much about “balancing” both sides, i.e. you should both be allowed to invite 60 guests. Make the list about who you and your groom really care about and who you want to be a part of your special day. Are kids allowed? Make sure that if you are not having children at your wedding, you make this very clear to parents on the invitation. Take into consideration that the parents will need to find a babysitter and make
arrangements to ensure that their child is looked after, or they may not even be able to attend at all.

Set the scene There really are no limiTs on wedding recepTions Today - you can celebraTe your nupTials indoors aT a recepTion cenTre, ouTside in a beauTiful marquee or in your own backyard if ThaT suiTs your needs.
But while there are no rules, planning, particularly for an outdoor ceremony and reception is key. The most fickle guest at an outdoor wedding is the weather and there’s no guarantee when it comes to choosing a date or season for your special day. You might think that because you’ve chosen a day in the middle of December you will

enjoy bright, warm sunshine, but anything can happen, weather can turn bad in an instant and no bride or groom wants to be left out in the rain. It is always advisable to have a plan B. Consider making a tentative booking at a local hall or reception centre, or if you have the space, organise a the home of a friend or family member that is suitable for a last minute change of venue. If you are set up outside, and the rain stays away, make sure all decorations and items are securely fixed so as you don’t return to
your reception to find items strewn across the lawn. Combine the best of both worlds – the use of a marquee provides protection from the elements but still allows guests to move freely through the surrounding gardens. Flowers are another great way to decorate for an outdoor ceremony and don’t have to be limited to table centres, use them generously throughout the setting and the use of ambient lighting, including candles, adds great atmosphere.

Musical memories Music is an iMportant part of
every wedding day whether it’s walking down the aisle, the
bridal waltz, or filling the dance floor with faMily and friends.
Choosing the musical entertainment for your wedding is likely to be one of the first decisions you will need to make when planning begins as bands and DJ’s are often booked months or even years in advance. As a couple decide on the type of atmosphere
you would like for your wedding. Will your guests enjoy modern music from a DJ to dance the night away? Or would you prefer more traditional wedding music from a live band? Or perhaps a versatile band that can provide a mix of both? Whatever your choice, book your entertainment as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Arguably the two most important pieces of music on your wedding day will be the song played as the bride walks down the aisle and the bridal waltz. In both cases, you should select music that you enjoy as a couple, maybe a sentimental favourite that brings back memories of a special time or a song that has lyrics which you feel aptly expressing your feelings. Trying to nail down the top 10 wedding songs of all time is difficult, but a quick online search will offer suggestions of a variety of well-known tunes such as;
• Heaven – Bryan Adams, • Unchained Melody – The Righteous Brothers, • Forever – Kiss, • Love Me Tender – Elvis Presley, • I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You – Elvis Presley, • When You Say Nothing at All – Ronan Keating, • From This Moment – Shania Twain and Bryan White, • Just the Way You Are – Billy Joel, • You Made Me Love You – Al Jolson, • Don’t Know Much - Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Nevil.
Of course, failing all else, if you cannot decide, walking down the aisle to the traditional bridal march is always a lovely wedding choice.

Capturing your special day
Your Wedding Guide, Wed. 23rd October 2013 — 15
Tips for dealing with wedding stress Your wedding daY is one of the
most important daYs of Your life, but getting there can sometimes be a recipe for stress overload.
Here are a few simple tips to avoid wedding day stress and ensure you don’t turn into the dreaded bridezilla before the big day; 1. Plan ahead. Don’t leave things until the last minute. Your wedding plans need to start well in advance. Use a checklist (such as the one in this Wedding Guide) to ensure you haven’t forgotten anything. 2. Ask for help. You don’t have to do this all on your own. The groom can help with the big decisions and don’t be afraid to ask family and friends to lend a hand. 3. Delegate. You have bridesmaids because they are special friends or family members who you want to stand by your side on the most important day of your life. Trust
them to help out with choosing dresses, shoes, jewellery and other tasks.
4. Take time out. The wedding doesn’t have to be all you think about. Remember you’re doing this because you want to marry the person you love. Take time out together in the lead up to the big day to enjoy some romance. 5. Don’t worry about what you can’t control. So the weather forecast is bleak or the shade of napkin isn’t exactly right, the little things that you can’t control are not worth time spent worrying.
6. Remember to laugh. If all else fails remember to keep your sense of humour. Look back on your wedding day and smile, whether it goes perfectly to plan or not, because it will be a memory that lasts a lifetime.
