Cape Horn Vineyard R

elax with family and friends, enjoy a glass of wine and experience all the beauty the lush Barmah Forest and Murray River have to offer with a visit to Cape Horn Vineyard this spring. Located on a sand hill wedged between the Murray and Goulburn Rivers upstream from Echuca and on the very western edge of Western Moira, Cape Horn Vineyard is named after the river bend resembling Cape Horn on the tip of South America. The Vineyard was first planted to Shiraz grapes in the 1800's serving the thriving River Boat trade. The property is owned by Sue and Ian Harrison and the Vineyard has been re-established, with

the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Durif, Marsanne and Zinfandel vines. Their philosophy is to produce high quality

Cape Horn Vineyard has sprawling lawns with plenty of room for the kids to run around while the rest of the family relaxes and is also dog friendly due to the Harrison’s own affection for two very loveable resident Labradors. Today Cape Horn Vineyard offers visitor’s tastings at the cellar door of a fine selection of wines made from their own fruit. Guests are encouraged to pack a picnic and take the trip to the vineyard. Tocumwal and Tuppal Food and Fibre Festival - so much more to enjoy

The historic Tuppal Woolshed will feature as the focal point of the 2014 Tuppal Food & Fibre Festival in October.

S

pring is the perfect time to visit beautiful Tocumwal to appreciate the lush countryside bursting with colour, enjoy delightful warm weather alongside the majestic Murray River, visit a treasure trove of local stores and participate in a bevy of special events. The highlight of the season will be the much-anticipated Tuppal Food & Fibre Festival from October 17 to 19. To be held at the iconic Tuppal Woolshed near Tocumwal, the festival is the next exciting chapter in the town’s proud history following the successful re-enactment of Tom Roberts’ Shearing of the Rams in 2010. Visit Tuppal Woolshed for a step back in time, see the rich Murray

Pine timber craftsmanship, reminisce on the days of blade shearing amongst the shearing stands and immerse yourself in the history of the woolshed, built in 1900. The station itself, situated between Deniliquin and Tocumwal, was originally selected in 1843 and in 2014 will be home to the Tuppal Food & Fibre Festival, paying homage to the evolution of the great farming tradition – from paddock to plate – that forms the backbone of modern Australia. The three day festival will present a variety of events suited to all ages designed to deliver the taste, feel, smell and experience of food and fibre produced by our farmers and emphasise the importance of Australian farming from the past, until now and into the future.

Walk through six marquees dedicated each food and fibre group, Dairy, Fruit and Veg, Meat, Grain and Oil Seeds, Rice and Fibre. After you leave the marquees you can purchase all your fresh food from the huge number of market stalls offering a variety of produce, home-made preserves, jams, pickles, relishes, oils, nuts, honey and so much more. Talk to the farmers who produce your food, learn about their lives and the process from farm to the supermarket where you purchase your “daily bread”. There will be talks by professionals in water harvesting, grain production, machinery, animal health and more. Visit for the festival and stay for a while to enjoy everything on offer at Tocumwal with a variety of

accommodation options suited to each and every traveller’s needs. Be sure to call in to the Tocumwal on the Murray Visitor Information Centre where local volunteers are on hand to provide information on local places of interest in the area and you can peruse and purchase from displays of local arts, crafts and produce. The friendly staff can provide the inside information on spring events, including the local markets which offer a fantastic variety of local fare for bargain hunters. So start planning your spring visit to Tocumwal by visiting the Tuppal Food & Fibre Festival website at www.tuppal.com or call the Visitor Information Centre on 5874 2517.

Follow the Farm Gate Trail F or gourmet food lovers, fine food novices or those simply interested in the freshest and best produce our region has to offer - the Sun Country on the Murray Farm Gate Trail is a must this winter. The trail is a veritable smorgasboard of delights, made up of a co-operative group of primary producers who provide their product direct from its source – the farm. Based on the premise of ‘produce without pretence’ each farm gate

offers a completely different experience. Rather than being a designated route, the Farm Gate Trail is designed to allow visitors to make their own way to each of the working farms in the region. Take your time to visit, chat with the farm owners, learn about the process and, most importantly, taste and indulge to your heart’s content. The Farm Gate Trail is flexible to suit your time line and your tastes.

Enjoy all the region has to offer, direct from the source, on the Farm Gate Trail.

Rich Glen Olives offer a delectable range of products to taste and enjoy.

Try a “Delectable Day Trip” taking in the Big Strawberry, Buffalo Brewery, Byramine Homestead or Cactus Country. Or how about “Gourmet Delights” from Renaissance Chocolates, Boosey Creek Cheese, KNM Berries and Rich Glen Olives. The “Wine Down Trail” can take you to Monichino Wines, Cape Horn Vineyard and Warrabilla Wines. For “Farm Fever” schedule a visit to Cobrawonga Estate and Nursery, Aussie Wool Quilts and Aintree Almonds and Apiary. Each of the stops along the way will have different opening days and hours, so it is worth checking out the details of each venue as your plan your day out. Whatever your taste, whatever

your interest, the Farm Gate Trail is the perfect way to enjoy the best the region has to offer. The Yarrawonga Lollyshop is open seven days a week during busy periods, including holidays and public holidays, so no one will miss out on a sweet treat. The store is closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. You can find Yarrawonga Lollyshop at the bridge end of town diagonally opposite to the Yarrawonga Post Office. Look for the Yarrawonga Lollyshop on Facebook and Instagram where new items will be posted to keep you up to date. Catch some ‘spring Gold’ By t tony Bennett from l lake Mulwala Fish, Camp & ski

F

irst up, welcome to all visitors who are in town for the school holidays. It’s pleasing to see how many kids come in store each day looking for a bit of advice on where they're a chance of catching a fish or two. There are a lot worse things they could be doing than being out on an adventure with rod in hand. staring into my crystal ball and reviewing notes from previous years, the traditional arrival of "Spring Gold", aka Golden Perch / Yellas should start to fire in and around Lake Mulwala anywhere from now onwards. Best bet for this time of year is to target the water above Majors creeks up to Bundalong and surrounding backwaters. w waters with increased current flow or a few of the sneaky lagoons that tend to be a couple of degrees warmer should be your first port of call. Jackall's, hard body lures in the 50-70mm size range or smaller profile spinnerbaits in natural colours would be my preferred option. a very important and timely reminder is that 1st September through to 30th November inclusive, the targeting of Murray cod is not permitted

is drawing near with the Golden Do$$ars being held on 25th October. This exciting one day event is designed to specifically to target Yellas / Golden perch in and around lake Mulwala. w with huge ca$h prizes up for grabs, this is always a great day for the competitive minded fisho. Following on from the Golden Do$$ars is the iconic "Yamaha Cod Classic, Australia's largest inland freshwater fishing event. Lake Mulwala will come alive with in excess of 3000 fisho's vying for the $125K+ prizes that includes seven boating packages plus the opportunity for somebody to win a Ford ute, the choice of either a Ford Ranger Glenn Becker with a 58cm Yella which will be running hot in Lake Mulwala very soon.

ohn Gehrig, a fourth generation vineron, established our vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976; only minutes from the Milawa gourmet Region. John’s son Ross has taken on the challenge of guiding the fifth winemaking generation of Gehrig’s to craft some fine wines. armed with a wine science degree, international winemaking experiences in Alsace, Burgundy and Israel, Ross’s obsession is producing the best grapes to produce wines of distinction that will pay homage to this iconic northeast victorian v winery.
