This is a special time of year in the EchucaMoama region.
a mixture of the nation’s best blues, soul, country, jazz, pop and rock.
The excitement and energy is tangible, almost electric, with so many things on the agenda in the next few months.
If you prefer your fun to be a bit more cute and cuddly, then grab a furry friend and head to the Teddy Bears’ Picnic on Friday, February 26, which is the day the Murray Meander heads off on its way to Mildura.
There are art exhibitions, including the new Foundry Art Space which opened in December, and continuing with its inaugural exhibition of works from Echuca Moama Arts Initiative members. While there are things happening constantly during the next few months, the action reaches fever pitch in February. The Southern 80 is the world’s biggest waterski race, and on February 13 and 14 hundreds of boats will be roaring along an 80 km stretch of the Murray River from Torrumbarry Weir to Echuca as thousands grab every vantage point to cheer on the boats and their skiers. A fantastic party atmosphere grips the region and this will extend to the following weekend when many of Australia’s best performers take to the stage at the Echuca Aquatic Reserve for the Riverboats Music Festival. The likes of Missy Higgins, You Am I, The Church, CW Stoneking and more will provide a music extravaganza over three days with

Get a snap of our happy snappers As far as official welcomes go, turtles Terry and Myrtle are a bit different, but so is their pet fish and in another tank their mate Murray the cod Of the smiling faces that greet people at the Echuca-Moama Tourist Information Centre, there are two that stand head and shoulders above the rest. Or maybe that is below the rest, because their necks are only short. Which is only to be expected, because they are Murray shortneck turtles. Turtles Terry and Myrtle live in a tank in the visitor centre, along with a surprising pet fish that was put in the turtle tank as food — but befriended the potential predators. In a nearby tank is a Murray cod, with the original moniker of Murray, which like the turtles is two years old. “You would be surprised how many men say they want to come back for Murray in a few years when he is quite a bit bigger,” said visitor centre worker Jenn Rendle. While Murray has remained safely in the tank, Terry and Myrtle are

Southern 80 – fire on the water
It is one of the world’s great speedboat racing events and pulls hundreds of boats, thousands of competitors and support crews and a small army of fans. It’s an occasion you don’t want to miss. It’s as much fun as you can have at 200 km/h, on one ski, every muscle in your body screaming for it to end. Where every turn in the Murray demands total focus from driver, observer — and most of all from the skiers hanging on for dear life. The race might be 20 km, give or take, as the crow flies but the physically- and mentally-demanding twists and turns rack up the 80 km for which the race is famed. Along with the millions of dollars worth of hi-octane technology and the world’s best skiers, which it draws, like flies to the honeypot. As the river roars into life thousands flock to the banks to find the best possible vantage points. Crowds eagerly wait around each and every twist and turn along the river, ready to cheer on the boats and skiers as they fly past. With more than 500 boats expected to take part in the 2016 Southern 80, 10
towing skiers of all ages and abilities — and that starts with daredevils in the Under 10 section to the veterans of the over 40s. There is also a category for disabled skiers, so if you can get up on a ski, the Murray in February is the place to be. With staggered start times running all weekend earplugs will be essential and the action nonstop. The cool place to be for this hot competition is the finishing line at the Victoria Park boat ramp, where presentations will be held throughout the weekend. A bar, trade tables, food and drink vendors, toilets, first aid, marquees, and a dry area will all be part of the complex. There will also be children’s entertainment areas including face painting, colouring in and a bucking bull, so the action on the water is just part of a full weekend of family fun.
WHAT'S ON – Summer – Autumn 2016
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12 The fun kicks off on Friday with breakfast with the stars at the Kerrabee Sound Shell in Moama from 7 am to 9 am. Come along and see some of the boats before they take to the water, chat to competing teams and get posters
signed by the stars of the ski racing scene. A marketplace will also be set up during the day in Moama. Then from 7 pm competitors and others will dress up for the official launch evening — held at Morrison’s Winery on Merool Lane, Moama
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13 Saturday will see the Total Tools static display in Hare St between Anstruther and Darling streets between 9 am and 1 pm, which always proves popular. Many of the boats and teams will be on display, providing fans with another chance to get up close with the latest in aquatic technology. Racing starts at 8 am with social classes, juniors, sub-juniors, disabled and tadpoles, so head down to Victoria Park to see the teams cross the line and also pick up the 2016 Southern 80 merchandise. On Saturday afternoon the Beechworth Bakery Baker’s Blitz and President’s Dash in the afternoon will draw plenty of attention, before the action ticks along with the veterans and senior social classes.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14 Expert classes race throughout the day over the 80 km from Torrumbarry Weir to Echuca, starting at 8 am. Most attention will be on the superclass boats in the afternoon.

Safe boating on NSW waterways Boating is regulated by state governments, so different laws apply in different states. When it comes to the Murray River, which borders Victoria and New South Wales, the laws of NSW apply.
Wear a lifejacket Children under 12 years are required to wear a lifejacket at all times in a vessel under 4.8m, and when in an open area of a vessel 4.8m to 8m that is underway.
WEAR A LIFEJACK ET
• On vessels less than 4.8m, including canoes and kayaks, everyone must wear a lifejacket when boating at night or when boating alone. • Inflatable lifejackets need to be serviced in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations or at a minimum of 12 monthly intervals. These are only some examples of the lifejacket wearing requirements on NSW waterways, including the Murray River. For more information visit rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime
When towing or wake surfing • You must have an observer onboard who is responsible for observing the towed people and reporting all matters affecting them to the master, including vessels approaching from behind. The observer must be at least 16 years of age or hold a boat driving licence, must not be under the influence of alcohol or a drug, and should be familiar with the standard hand signals. • Consider the impact of your vessel’s wash on other people and the environment, ensuring your wash does not have a dangerous, damaging or unreasonable impact.
Alcohol and drug offences
Safety on houseboats
Breath testing, including random breath testing (RBT), can be conducted on the operator of a vessel while it is underway, including drifting. Permissible concentration of alcohol limits are as follows:
When you hire a houseboat you will be advised how many people are legally allowed on the vessel at any one time, whether underway or moored. The maximum number on any houseboat is 12, but this could be less depending on the size of the vessel.
0.00 for recreational vessel operators aged under 18 years
less than 0.05 for recreational vessel operators over 18 years
If you exceed the maximum number of people you may affect the buoyancy of the vessel and cause it to capsize.
The operator of a vessel includes anyone steering or exercising control over its course or direction, and includes the observer in a ski boat or PWC and anyone being towed.
Never jump from houseboats. It is an offence and you could hit unseen snags in the water, or slip and hit the edge of the boat.
less than 0.02 for commercial vessel operators

>> Plus Missy’s more-folksy pop feel. There’s also a thumping dose of classic Aussie rock thrown in — from The Church. It all shows why Riverboats, almost overnight, became one of the country’s most anticipated and renowned boutique music festivals. “Over the past four years Riverboats has developed a passionate following among festival goers due to its fabulous atmosphere, friendly audience and superb natural setting,” executive producer David Frazer said. “To be able to kick back by the Murray and listen to artists such as Missy Higgins, You Am I, The Church and CW Stoneking will be a truly magical experience,” he said. For three sunny days and three balmy nights; music lovers will descend on one of the most picturesque festival sites in the country. Under the dappled light, streaming through the canopy of those red gums and to the sound of historic paddlesteamers meandering past all weekend, music fans from across Australia will roll out picnic rugs, open bottles of wine and settle in to experience one of the most exciting festival line-ups this summer.
Riverboats is also the only summer festival in Australia to present performances aboard paddlesteamers. A major drawcard in previous years, Riverboats 2016 has once again partnered with the historic Pride of the Murray paddlesteamer to offer three separate and unforgettable one-hour cruises. With performances by Ruby Boots, Skyscraper Stan and The Commission Flats and The Wilson Pickers on Saturday February 20, these cruises sell out each year and festival goers are encouraged to book early. Beechworth Bakery will host the official festival breakfast on Sunday, February 21 from 9.30 am to 11.30 am, featuring a performance by Australian alt-country troubadour Ruby Boots, overlooking the Campaspe River.

It’s time for another Rod Run as 300 of the country’s hottest rods descend on Echuca-Moama for a little dose of hi-octane heaven. Echuca-Moama is set to become a hi-octane, hot rod heaven on March 18, 19 and 20. Around 300 hot rods and customised historic cars will thunder into town for a weekend of exploring and sharing the owners’ passions for powerful classic cars during the Rich River Rod Run. The Rod Run is held every second year, and 2016 promises to be the biggest and best as the event’s reputation and status continues to grow. The weekend is staged by the Rich River Rod and Custom Club, and Frank Bowles, one of the organisers, said hot rodding was born after World War II when people decided to resurrect and renew their grandfathers’ cars that had been stored in barns. They put in new engines, fixed up the brakes and tyres, and then started racing the vehicles. “So the true hot rod is pre-1949, and we have a number of them take part in the Rod Run,” Frank said. They have helped the Rich River event gain national status in recent years, attracting car enthusiasts from near and far. Also helping elevate the event’s standing are the fantastic facilities the Echuca-Moama region offers visitors, and Rod Run participants make the most of them. The Rod Run starts with registration at the Rich River Golf Club Resort from 5 pm on Friday, March 18, followed by a welcome feast and entertainment.
Frank said they were even trying to organise a merry-go-round for children. Classic country hospitality will be the highlight of the catering, there will be trade stands offering all the information you need to start your own journey into classic cars. Followed by an auction. While the Rod Run is all about enthusiasts sharing their passion, it also contributes to several local groups and organisations, including Echuca hospital, which receives donations from the proceeds. It also offers a chance to win a rebuilt 1932 Ford mini rod, complete with a purpose-built trailer for easy transportation, through a raffle.

>> region’s burgeoning food and wine industry. “There are so many fantastic new food and wine producers in our region, and we are highlighting what they can do,” said Perricoota Wine Region president and St Anne’s Winery winemaker, Trent Eacott. The winery group organised last year’s inaugural Flavours Festival because, Trent said, while there were so many good things happening in the local food and wine sector, there was “a big lack of regional identity”. That led to the Flavours Festival — but with a twist. The main day — Sunday, May 15 — is staged at Morrison’s Winery and people can get there and back in one of the region’s beautiful, historic paddlesteamers. The day at Morrison’s will feature a range of stalls showcasing the skills and flavours of the region — whether that be food from local primary producers or restaurants through to the wide variety of award-winning wines coming from the region.
The day will also feature cooking demonstrations from local chefs, showing how to make the local of top quality local produce.
“The wine quality across the region has really stepped up in the past decade,” Trent said.
Giving them a chance to break free and go to town with their creativity, making the food they have always wanted.
“Local wineries have been wining plenty of awards, so it would be really good for people to reintroduce themselves to brands they know.”
Local musicians will add to the relaxed atmosphere, while activities for children will include a cupcake decorating competition.

The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 12-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish and chips.
Fish in a Flash uses only premium Australian fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

Deniliquin Fishing Classic 2015 adult major prize winners James and Sophie Hood with Jim Edmunds from Solar City Marine and Colin Hood.
Catch the Cod-father for a $5000 reward
Families hook, line and sinker
Big prizes in famous fishing contest. The annual Deniliquin RSL Fishing Club’s Fishing Classic is a season highlight and this year there will be more than $60 000 in cash and prizes up for grabs
of it and cutting off the tag before releasing the fish back into the water.
Cod is what fishing the Murray is all about — from the giant catches of yesteryear to the current crop of cunning fish that torment anglers near and far.
For which the major prize is a 4.2 m Quintrex boat, with 30 hp Yamaha outboard engine and a Quintrex trailer — all valued about $15 000.
But as well as the guile of the fisher being tested during the Deniliquin RSL Fishing Club’s annual Fishing Classic, one particular Murray cod will be worth a $5000 bonus. The prize cod is one of the new features at the 2016 Deniliquin XXXX Gold Fishing Classic, on the weekend of February 20 and 21. It will be tagged and released into the Edward River on Friday, February 19, and anyone who catches it in the next couple of days will be able to claim the $5000 prize by taking a picture
MATHOURA FISHING CLASSIC
But the $5000 cash is just one of several prizes on offer as part of the tag-and-release tournament.
And to be in with a chance of winning the boating package you simply need to take part, as all adult entries automatically go in the draw to win the major prize. The junior prize is a 3.6 m punt with 5 hp outboard, valued at about $4500, while an $8000 package of Quintrex 390 Explorer boat with Quintrex trailer and 15 hp Yamaha outboard will be given away on Saturday, February 20 as part of an early-bird draw. A similar package is also being offered as a raffle prize, part of a whopping $60 000 in prizes and giveaways.
There will be more great family fishing fun with the Mathoura Fishing Classic on March 4–6, which offers a major prize of a Stacer 429 Proline Angler boat and trailer package with a Yamaha 40 hp outboard engine, safety gear and canopy, valued at $20 000.

While the tagged-cod competition is new for 2016, so too is a kayak section in the competition that last year attracted about 1700 entrants fishing from boats and the banks of the Edward River. This year a 20 km section of the river has been earmarked for the competition, with a special kayak fishing area other boats are discouraged from entering. The fishing competitions do not end there. For more information contact (03) 5881 1455.
There are also early entry prizes of a $7000 boat and motor package for adults and a $2000 kayak for juniors, available to people who enter before February 24. But the fun is not restricted to the water. The weekend features yabby racing, live music, a lure tree raffle, a chance to win your weight in beer — and talks about fishing. It is all being run from Tarragon Lodge at Picnic Point, Mathoura. For all the details contact Mathoura Visitor and Business Centre on (03) 5884 3730 or www.mathoura.com.au

They enjoyed the experience so much they organised an annual fundraising event, which each year sees participants spend just over a week covering a third of the Murray River. The middle section is targeted this time around, and coordinator Dick Phillips says a big week of fun and fundraising is planned. “It’s a fun week on the river, there’s no doubt about that,” he said. And there is no need to rush. “There’s plenty of time to fish and all that sort of stuff,” Dick said.

WHAT'S ON – Summer – Autumn 2016
Host Luke Thomas displays great showmanship and humour for crowds attending the Travelling Outback Show.
A show which recaptures our colonial past, when Echuca was Australia’s biggest inland port, is pulling huge crowds to see camels, horses and bullock trains in action. Bullock trains helped open inland Australia but today they are just so many sepia pictures on the walls of museums and in history books. Except in the Port of Echuca, where one of Australia’s last working teams can be found as part of the spectacularly successful Travelling Outback Show. The show has been running at the port since November and its season is expected to continue until at least March. During the colonial era, when the paddlesteamers ruled our inland waterways and Echuca was Australia’s largest inland port, camels and horses — and bullocks — all called the Port of Echuca home. And if it was not their permanent home, then at the very least it was their workplace.
They all returned in 2015, with the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre’s newest attraction. Bourke-based showman and stockman Luke Thomas tells the history of the river trade and the role animals played in building and helping Echuca prosper as a river town. Delivered with a twist of contemporary Aussie larrikinism, the entertaining show takes the audience on a journey, when beasts of burden ruled and paddlesteamers travelled the rivers, when bush poets told tall tales and people gathered around a campfire. Echuca-Moama Tourism chief executive Tom Smith said since the first stockwhip was cracked at its opening last week, feedback for the show had been sensational.
“Everyone leaves with a smile on their face, “ he said. “People often forget the beasts of burden and the roles they played but it is a part of our history.” The shows kick off at 11 am and runs for an hour, from Tuesday to Sunday. Bookings and prices are available at Port of Echuca Discovery Centre.

An ace time at Echuca tournament Echuca’s annual Easter Tennis Tournament sees more than 300 players from several states turn out for some friendly — but determined — competition at Echuca Lawn Tennis Club There’s no better place to smash a few winners — and work off those chocolate eggs — than Echuca during Easter. Hundreds of people will be battling from the baselines during the annual Easter Tennis Tournament, played on Echuca’s grass courts beside Victoria Park. The event, run by the Echuca Lawn Tennis Club, has a proud history, and has been attracting the state’s best social players for the past 90 years. And again this year the tournament over the four days of Easter, from March 25 – 28, is expected to attract 300 players in nine grades of competition. They will compete in under-13, 15 and 17, open, A, B, C and D-Grades and seniors, with a total of 700 entries expected across all the

grades in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Event organiser Ian Sinnett said the tournament was designed for social players. “It’s all about mum, dad and the kids playing in the same event over Easter,” he said. Despite the tournament’s social nature, “there will be some really good tennis to watch, especially from the A and B-Grade players,” Mr Sinnett said. Many of those are coming back year after year to enjoy the tournament and everything the Echuca-Moama region has to offer in the busy Easter break. “We get a lot of repeat business each year, with around 90 per cent of the players coming from Melbourne’s metropolitan area,” according to Mr Sinnett. “It all adds up to an extremely busy few days, which is great for the local area.” Contact tournament secretary Ian Sinnett after hours on 5482 5171.

Carriage king has seen it all A stately passage around Echuca’s historic port in horse and carriage is a charming step back in time that is just as popular today. Few things are more evocative of our colonial days than the clip clop of horses’ hooves on roads. It makes nearly every head turn to see what’s coming. So James Eden has got used to smiling at a lot of people. He’s just about seen it all in the back of the carriage he steers around
Echuca — through the port precinct. “I’ve seen many babies and youngsters fall asleep, a few older people too, heck I’ve even had a fellow propose,” James laughed. “Not to me, of course.” The proposal was all pre-arranged, and “we did an extended tour for him,” James said as a broad grin erupted just above one of the region’s longest beards. James is the horse and carriage’s most common driver for tours that operate on Wednesdays and weekends during school terms, but every day during school holidays and public holidays. And while he loved the work, James said it was a career that happened by chance. “I never knew what I wanted to be, so I suppose I just fell into it,” he said. He had loved horses as a youngster but amazingly was 20 before he learnt to ride — and 25 before he started to really work with horses.
But despite the ‘slow’ start for the past five years he has been the main horse and carriage driver around Echuca’s historic port area and in that time reckons he’s “cut a fair few laps”. He insisted it was the best way to take in everything the port had to offer, with the Clydesdales slow walking pace and rhythmic sound of those hooves.
“We have kids from the city who have never seen horses before and they are drawn to the horses and just want to pat them.” He said the fluffy features of Clydesdales might well add to the allure for children. You can book a ride at www. billabongranch.com.au/carriage-form or phone 5483 5122.

The rush is on at Easter Rushworth at Easter is about much more than chocolate eggs and hot cross buns. It is also about taking an entertaining approach to celebrating history during the Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival. The two-day event, in and around Rushworth, begins on Easter Saturday when history, music and fun combine. All the action is centred in the heritagelisted High St, where the Mark Nunis Jazz Band will be back by popular request after performing in 2015. Livewire entertainer Margarita Enchilada will also be taking her big, bold and bright costumes to High St where she will be doing things from
juggling and spinning plates to sharing her skills with children. Along with the music and entertainment the day will also feature stalls, food, an art and craft exhibition, steam engine display and the museum will be open. Be sure not to miss the parade that starts at 1 pm and includes all types of horses, old vehicles, an old steam traction engine, CFA and foot entries as well. This year there will also be a few competitions on Saturday. You can unleash the inner milliner in an Easter hat competition, with sections for traditional and futuristic headwear. There will also be a competition for
the best decorated push bike — and for older resident the best decorated mobility scooter. Festival secretary Heather Wellington said she expected more mobility scooters to be decorated and entered than bicycles.

Run 4 Wayne keeps on keeping on The Run 4 Wayne grew out of a community desire to help a sick friend and despite the tragedy of his death the run is still going and more people are being helped. When Wayne Rickard was diagnosed with stage four gastric cancer a little over two years ago, the community not only rallied around him and his family, it started running.
banded together to create the Run 4 Wayne, raising money to help Wayne and his family meet medical costs, while also raising money for kids cancer research.
And it continues to run to help people meet medical expenses through the annual Run 4 Wayne.
Wayne’s treatment was initially successful, until a secondary cancer was found in his oesophagus and spread throughout his body, ending his life in August, 2014.
Wayne was just 44 when he was given the devastating news of his condition, and his attempts to battle the cancer took him all the way to a hospital in southern China to receive alternative treatment in conjunction with western medicine. In March of 2014 some amazing people in the Echuca-Moama community 52
However Wayne’s friendly smile, his happy nature and, most importantly, his determination to help people in need lived on. Another Run 4 Wayne was held in March 2015, this time to raise funds for three-year-old boy, Ryder Colless, who
WHAT'S ON – Summer – Autumn 2016
was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis in December 2012, at the age of 19 months.
The run has now become an annual event, to help people who have been touched by cancer.
He underwent extensive chemotherapy treatment for 12 months, after which he was given the all clear.
The second fun run in Wayne’s honour, and the third Run 4 Wayne, is being held on March 6, 2016, raising money for children’s cancer research and helping people in the local community battling cancer.
Unfortunately, the disease returned in May 2014 and he underwent a further six months of chemotherapy followed by 18 months of medication, but the fun run again proved to be a great success and boosted Ryder’s spirits. It also demonstrated the amazing community of people in the EchucaMoama area, and how people are prepared to help others going through tough times.
As with previous events, there will be runs over five and eight kilometres, along with a real carnival atmosphere as everyone gets together for a good cause. Full details of the day will be on the Run 4 Wayne Facebook page.

Foundry stoked up and ready to roll Echuca-Moama’s arts world has a new HQ and it’s down in the port, in one of its more historic addresses.
Echuca-Moama Arts Initiative president Sue Badham.
The Foundry is on fire again. Not necessarily with the fires melting mountains of ore ingots to be reborn as useful bits and pieces but once more it has become a centre of creativity. Instead circa 2015 it is for EchucaMoama’s art communities — they can be found working there and their work is for sale there. The Foundry Art Space was relaunched in December as a new, exciting — and dedicated — location for a range of art exhibitions. With its inaugural show featuring the talent of 14 regional artists and continuing until the end of January, signalling the start of a busy exhibition program. There are also plans to host travelling exhibitions according to Echuca-Moama Arts Initiative president Sue Badham. The large building in Murray Esplanade, part of the historic Port of Echuca,
features a decor that blends history with modern lines and an industrial feel brought about through bold use of corrugated iron. Walls and moveable partitions have been installed to create different exhibition spaces — perfect for hosting exhibitions and workshops. Plans for The Foundry (in an earlier incarnation it was Freeman’s Foundry) include plenty of workshops, with some aimed at children, throughout January. An old printing press has also been donated and will be used for printing workshops. The move in December followed nearly two years in the nearby Customs House, which revealed huge interest in local arts. Sculptor and EMAI member Kevin Simpson said more than 20 000 went through exhibitions in 20 months at the Customs House.
“It was a huge success, beyond our wildest dreams,” he said. “People said an art gallery wouldn’t work but they were wrong, there’s been a huge amount of interest. “And we’ve only just scratched the surface of art in this area.”
With the new venue enabling the arts group to attract more high-profile artists, and put a stronger focus on local indigenous artists, the number of people through the door is expected to dramatically increase in coming years.

The lowdown on every kind of gown Isobel Harvie is keeping generations of couture — and the common — alive through her fanatical collecting and regular exhibitions. Something inside Isobel Harvie clicked when she saw photographs of her grandmother when she moved to Australia in the early 1900s, and her nursing certificate from Glasgow. “I started wondering what she wore, were the clothes comfortable, how things were for her,” Mrs Harvie said. That sparked years of collecting gowns and dresses of all types, and a series of exhibitions at the refurbished Kyabram Town Hall. Belle of the Ball, displaying close to 100 ball gowns throughout the ages, is on exhibition until February 8, after which it will be replaced by the display 100 Years of Wedding Gowns. Mrs Harvie spent many years working in fashion, as the head of the skirts and blouses section at Buckleys and Nunn in Chadstone, as a tailoress and running a
dress shop in Kyabram. She described herself as “a real squirrel” who was “obsessed with fashion”, and started collecting in earnest a few years ago after surviving a battle with cancer and becoming a Breast Cancer Network spokesperson which “brought me out of myself”. Although “I collect anything and everything — I’m a real bowerbird, I guess.” Her dress collections have been shown in four exhibitions at the hall, with the latest featuring gowns dating back as far at 1840. The gowns are arranged by colour, allowing people to challenge themselves by guessing the eras. And Mrs Harvie said there were definite distinctions between the

decades — andparticularly the change from the Victorian era to the Edwardian, with fashion becoming more colourful and feminine. Although the 1930s were “one of my favourite decades because it was so well made, and just the shape of the dresses”.
Many others are picking their own favourite decades from the exhibitions. “To me it’s really lovely to see the delight it brings people. It brings back a lot of memories for a lot of people,” Mrs Harvie said. For more details on exhibition times call 5852 1546.

Just down the road Your journey doesn’t have to end at the town limits. You’ll find plenty to see and do in Echuca-Moama’s surrounding towns. Rochester 23mins from Echuca Rochester was home to Sir Hubert (Oppy) Opperman, legendary cyclist and later politician, whose statue off the main street is a popular stopping point for tourists. The Opperman Sports Museum is situated in the Shire Service Centre next to the Rochester Shire Hall in Mackay street. The museum contains personal memorabilia from Oppy’s sporting and political life including many photos, certificates, awards, trophies and the bike he rode over the last years of his life. Several panels have now been installed showing the various sporting clubs and individuals who have contributed to Rochester’s sporting history. A heritage walk from the main bridge to the red brick bridge takes in the old saleyards bull ring, the old water tower and shire hall, while the western bank of the Campaspe River has been set aside as a passive recreation reserve. Rochester Historical Society has its headquarter in Rochester’s second public school building, which was built on the High St site in 1874. Campaspe Weir can be reached by travelling south on the Northern Hwy toward Elmore and turning left on to a gravel road after 9 km.
Tongala 21mins from Echuca Tongala district was settled by squatters in the 1840s. Irrigation subsequently ensured the success of an intensive dairying industry. In Tongala, a series of murals depict the evolution of the dairy industry and groundwater issues. Other murals give an insight into the armed forces, while a monument pays tribute to the Australian Light Horse, and an avenue

of honour recalls those who lost their life in the Armoured Corp in Vietnam.
Lockington 33mins from Echuca Lockington is a small country town set in irrigated dairy farming country. Visitors can enjoy a picnic in the landscaped park areas, take a walk following the self-guided heritage walk or choose a route past the mural in the pavilion, the rose garden and Lions flower clock. Bring the fountain to life in the lagoon area and keep your eyes open for the Locky Ness monster. On Sunday afternoons (or by appointment) call in to Lockington and District Living Heritage Complex for a trip down memory lane, while enjoying friendly hospitality.
Rushworth 53mins from Echuca At Rushworth’s fire lookout at Growlers Hill, the view covers the historic gold mining town, Waranga Reservoir, Rushworth Forest and the Goulburn Valley. The 24 300 ha box ironbark forest is the largest of its type in Victoria, areas of it covering evidence of the district’s early mining activity. But Rushworth’s history is well preserved at the town’s museum, while historic buildings also remain the heart of the town. Waranga Basin, to the north-east of the town, is a tourist drawcard in the region, providing opportunities for boating, fishing and camping, while south of Rushworth is Whroo Historic Reserve, which represents the remnants of what was once a thriving gold mining town of 1000 people and 139 buildings.
WHAT’S ON – Summer – Autumn 2016
Barmah 31 km from Echuca Barmah is the gateway to the World Heritage listed Barmah State Forest which, with the Moira State Park, forms the largest red gum forest in the world. A forest drive from Barmah heads off along River Rd, which is two-wheel drive friendly, but dusty when dry. Kingfisher Wetland Cruises allows people to see the ecology and history of the forest, with some trees estimated to be more than 300 years old and more than 40 m high, the birdlife and its habitats and the Aboriginal significance of the area.
Pyramid Hill 55mins from Echuca Pyramid Hill is named after the adjacent granite hill with its many interesting rock formations. A cairn on the southern slopes commemorates the explorer, Major Sir Thomas Mitchell, who discovered and named the area in 1836 during his journey into Australia Felix. In spring many varieties of rare wildflowers may be found blooming among the rocks. Other interesting places to visit in the area include Terrick Terrick National Park and Mt Hope, as well as the town’s museum. Terrick Terrick National Park is 20 km south-east of the town and supports more than 200 species of native flora, including many rare and threatened species. Scenic drives take visitors to grasslands, granite outcrops, eucalypt woodlands and historical farming sites.

importance. Kow Swamp, a few kilometres away, is rich in bird and fish life and is water storage for the Torrumbarry irrigation scheme. A picnic area is on the east side of the lake is complete with swimming area, toilets and barbecue facilities. More barbecue facilities are available at the north end of the swamp, an area commonly used for fishing.
Torrumbarry 19mins from Echuca Torrumbarry offers a camping ground, picnic area, fish ladder and a heritage display and information centre at the weir. A lock operates at the weir, allowing passage for boats travelling up and down the Murray. The original weir was replaced in 1996, but major parts have been preserved of the original steel trestles, which were winched out of the river in times of flood.
Gunbower 29mins from Echuca Gunbower is a gateway to possibly Australia’s largest inland island and a significant wildlife sanctuary, Gunbower Island. The island is home to protected populations of kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes and 160 different species of birds. It is an idyllic location for camping, canoeing and a spot of bushwalking or bird watching. The running of the Gunbower Gold Cup in October is a picnic race day out for all the family.

to vintage engine rally Here’s your shot at some serious time travel as Kyabram’s vintage engine rally and Mack muster brings together some long-forgotten machinery and its loving supporters. Time travel might be the grist of the fiction writing mill. But time travel is real — just go to Kyabram on the weekend of March 19–20 when the Kyabram Vintage Engine and Machinery Restoration Group hosts is annual vintage engine rally and Mack muster. Hundreds of engines that powered everything from washing machines to band saws and chaff cutters will be on display over the two days at the Kyabram Showground. Rally secretary Greg Ross said the weekend would help transport people back to a bygone era before electricity made all the difference to the way people lived. Taking pride of place in the showground will be hundreds of vintage stationary engines powered by petrol, diesel and oil, which were used to power farm equipment including pumps, saws and chaff cutters.
“These were one of the main sources of power for moving water, milking cows, cutting chaff, even supplying light and power to homes before the electricity was switched on,” Mr Ross said. While organisers are expecting about 160 stationary engines ranging in size
from one to 20 horsepower, there will also be a big display of smaller Villiers engines from England. Lightweight and reliable, the Villiers low-horsepower engines were used to operate plenty of things around farms before the arrival of electricity, and were still a favourite with many of the older farmers who struggled to transport the larger and heavier engines, but were able to handle to Villiers machines. Last year the call went out for people to bring in their Villiers engines, resulting in a display of 147. Mr Ross was confident that number would be equalled or bettered at the 2016 event because “they like to bring them out and display them.” Some of the engines will be working and in pristine condition, others will need a little attention, others needing a lot of love, Mr Ross said.
Ray Grima (left) showed off his pride and joy — the only known 1939 model 802 White Truck in Australia ahead of the 2015 Kyabram vintage engine rally and Mack muster. muster, bringing together Mack trucks from all over the country.
Blacksmiths will be showing their skills, while there will also be a sheep shearing demonstration, although Mr Ross was unsure whether it would be using a hand blade or early mechanical shears powered by one of the stationary engines.
Mr Ross said he expected about 140 Mack trucks, including some built before 1920, to start arriving in Kyabram on the Wednesday before the big weekend.
There will also be a few steam engines on display as part of the event, and even a steam-powered vehicle that “putts along” Mr Ross said.
Regardless, “We’ve had people in their 90s stop by the fence, people who have lived on the land all their lives, and say they’ve never seen a sheep being shorn before,” Mr Ross revealed.
“We get support from a couple of steam enthusiasts.”
Those conversations were among many interesting ones held “over the fence”.
However stationary engines are just part of what is planned for what is
“We’ve met engineers who used to work on these machines 70 years ago,” Mr Ross said. “We learn a lot at these days.”
‘There will be some amazing and fascinating trucks, which are well worth checking out,” he said. However, many of the trucks will still be working, and will start heading off about noon on Sunday, so Mr Ross advised people to get to the showground on Saturday or Sunday morning to make the most of all the displays. Entry to the Kyabram Vintage Rally and Mack Muster is just $5 for adults, while children are free.
Other highlights include displays by wood turners, spinners, a vintage radio club and two sheds full of household and farm memorabilia. Two former telegraph operators will set up display showing children how to send, receive and decipher Morse code messages, while an animal nursery will be another attraction designed for children. “There’s a little bit for everyone,” Mr Ross said. Along with the vintage engine display, the weekend also features a Mack

— if you have to visit Hospitals are not on many tourist agendas but if something does go wrong it’s good to know Echuca now has a brand, spanking new hospital with the latest of everything. People flock to the Echuca-Moama region form many reasons — to relax by the river, enjoy adrenalin-pumping action of the Southern 80, get stuck into in fantastic food and wine, listen to music, enjoy the region’s history and much more. And while no-one comes because of health facilities, the reality is people are occasionally injured, or become ill, while enjoying their holidays. And it is good to know Echuca has fantastic new facilities available to take care of anyone in medical need. The new Echuca hospital will deliver 21st century health care facilities for the district community well into the future. Stage one of the $65 million redevelopment was opened on July 1, 2014 marking the start of a new era in health care for the district. It saw the community able to access a 78

new 30-bed surgical ward, which also has specific beds for high-dependency and cardiac patients, plus a 24-bed subacute ward, maternity ward and new medical imaging facilities.
There will be a lot more rooms dedicated to specific tasks, such as a formula-making room and breastfeeding room.
The ward features eight single maternity rooms (each with its own ensuite), two birthing rooms (each with a bath and shower) and one preparation room.
The ward also features a new nursery, incubator, monitoring equipment and phototherapy machine for jaundiced babies.
Maternity ward nurse unit manager Amanda Murphy said the old Rose Baker wing had one birthing suite with a bath and shower, a labour ward with no bathroom and a small prep room.
The new rehabilitation unit, which started operating in August 2014, is on the first floor of the hospital and features private rooms, a kitchen area and gymnasium.
The new birthing rooms are smaller than the birthing suite, but everything is built-in and streamlined, she said.
Primary care executive director Merrin Prictor said the rehabilitation facility meant those needing the services would no longer need to go to Bendigo, Shepparton or Melbourne for treatment.
Although the new ward would have six fewer beds, six were dedicated maternity beds, while two could be used for paediatrics. Although we have fewer beds, they are predominantly for maternity and paediatric patients, with some surgical overflow, Mrs Murphy said. We will also be bigger because of additional rooms and facilities that will

care program, two designated beds for its palliative care program and a combination of geriatric and rehabilitation beds. The final stage of the redevelopment, which includes a new emergency department, health information services, expanded medical record storage area, pharmacy, front entrance and extra hospital beds, opened for business 12 months later. The new ED includes fully self-contained resuscitation bays and 15 cubicles, including a paediatric area, isolation room, mental health room, two fasttrack rooms and two treatment rooms. ERH board president Mary Boek said the hospital had been built for future growth, so people did not have to travel long distances for treatment. “Our priorities for the future include strengthening cancer and alcohol and other drugs services to meet the needs of our community,” she said. “We are confident these new facilities will enable us to attract specialists, clinicians and allied health professionals to further enhance services.”
