veryone’s favourite family destination, Kyabram Fauna Park, is ready to welcome visitors during autumn. The park residents are out and about, shrugging off the summer heat and getting ready to enjoy some cooler autumn days. Call in and see one of the park favourites, Heidi the Koala. This beautiful bundle of fur is growing up quickly and remains one of the park’s most popular residents. She’s giving brothers Kendi and Kay a run for their money, as this feisty little lass demands attention, and Heidi will feature in the Kyabram Fauna Park Koala Enclosure. Don’t forget to call in and say hello to the beautiful pink cockatoos. The feathery duo Rose and Floyd invite you to their walk-through aviary home. And if you’re lucky, these two blushing beauties might even pose for a photograph or two. The parrots are also flourishing and, like the rest of the park family, are sure to enjoy saying hello to park visitors. While you’re at Kyabram Fauna Park you might get a bit peckish –

Nathalia, the major town in the region, is situated on the Murray Valley Highway with both Picola and Barmah on the alternate Echuca Road via Picola-Katunga road. Nathalia is situated on the banks of the tranquil Broken Creek, a great spot to break your trip or to enjoy lunch. The creek is stocked with fish and is the venue for annual fishing competitions hosted by the Nathalia Angling Club. The town has a large IGA Supermarket, home hardware store, fantastic bakery and butcher shop together with specialty stores, cafe/ takeaway and two great hotels. Barmah is on the bank of the magnificent Murray River and offers
all the facilities and opportunities you would expect of a river town. As well as the natural beauty of the river, Barmah is an access point to the magnificent Barmah State Park the largest Redgum forest in the southern hemisphere and an area of significant importance in both indigenous and early settlement culture. There are three caravan parks and a motel in Barmah as well as Wakiti Creek Resort situated at Yambuna, part way between Barmah and Nathalia. While at Barmah you can enjoy cruising the Murray on Kingfisher Cruises which is renowned as the best ecotourism experience on the Murray. A natural wonderland

n less than three hours’ drive from Melbourne you will find yourself nestled in the heart of our region, taking in the tranquility and the surrounds of one of Australia’s most loved icons, the Mighty Murray River. There are endless hours of enjoyment for the nature and outdoor enthusiasts, with an abundance of forests and wetlands to explore. Natural havens for a variety of native birds and animals can be found in every part of the region Take a leisurely stroll around the well-formed trail at Quinn Island
close to the township of Cobram. Experience 40 hectares of River Red Gum Forests and Silver Wattle Forest, delightful views of the river and marvel at the native birds and animals from the bird hide that overlooks a billabong. Experience the delights of Numurkah’s Kinnards Wetlands. The natural and constructed wetlands cover an area of nearly 100 hectares and offer a range of trails suitable for walking and cycling. Bird hides and picnic areas give you the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful diversity of wetlands
and woodlands. Chinaman’s Island in Yarrawonga is the place to cast your eye on the picturesque views of the beautiful Lake Mulwala especially at sunset or sunrise. Relax on the seating provided along the 2km return walk. Ponder the beauty of the surrounding wetlands. Birdlife is abundant in this area and signage at the entrance to the island will interpret some of the species you may encounter and the history of the area. On the outskirts of Strathmerton is the cool oasis of Ulupna Island, which is home to a vast number of native wildlife species.
An early morning or late afternoon visit to this region will not disappoint, with sightings of kangaroos and koalas virtually guaranteed. A visit to the region is not complete without exploring the iconic Barmah National Park. The Barmah Forest is a heritage listed region and home to the world’s largest stand of river red gums. The narrowest section or ‘choke’ of the Murray River is located in the park, bounded on either side by the Moira and Barmah Lakes. Go for a hike, hire a canoe or glimpse hidden wildlife on a river cruise.

T
he 2016 Cafe Culture Series is already in full swing and the second show in the series is sure to delight. Touring in April and May and featuring at the Cobram Italian Social Club on April 29, is a program of classical and contemporary music performed by the Melbourne Guitar Quartet. Very rarely does this ensemble perform outside of Melbourne and even more rarely do they perform in regional Victoria – offering an incredible opportunity to local music lovers. Whether it is an arrangement of modern Australian work or a re-modelling of a traditional chamber work they surpass the limitations of standard guitar ensemble. Their combination of innovative arrangements and superb ensemble playing is a joy to listen to. The third show in the series which tours in August and September sees six young jazz musicians, The Lagerphones, mix a traditional jazz sound with old timey tunes, deconstructed pop songs and some originals mixed with traditional takes on contemporary tunes. The Lagerphones bring it, wing it and swing it and will feature also at the Cobram Italian Social Club on Friday, August 5. The series crescendos in November and

Prime cod time A
utumn is undoubtedly the best time of year to be in search of a mighty Murray Cod or two around YarrawongaMulwala’s cod rich waters. With Lake Mulwala being the home of the Murray Cod, a bit of skill mixed in with a touch of patience and an ounce of luck should see anglers in with a great chance of tangling with one or two. All methods of fishing will produce cod this time of year with the average size being between 4070cms. For those who prefer bait fishing, nothing beats a cod’s favourite snack, a tasty bardi grub, followed closely by big juicy scrub worms or yabbies, or try chicken fillets, cheese or boiled eggs. Lure fisho’s have a plethora of choices when it comes to weapon of choice - whether casting, trolling or fishing the surface, there are lures to suit every application. Undoubtedly the hottest fishing method and most fun at the current time is surface fishing. If you are new to fishing the surface it may pay to have a few things in order before you head out; 1- A good torch/spotlight to help out any time it gets dark, 2 - The ability to cast in the dark without things going pear shaped, 3 - Good knowledge of the area you intend fishing in case you have to get out of there in a hurry for any reason, 4 - A
selection of lures that may mix things up a bit if you aren’t getting action on a certain lure, 5 Nerves of steel. If you have never experienced the hit from a surface feeding cod you are in for one hell of a surprise, 6 - Don’t strike and slow, slow, slow. Fishing below the weir can be very rewarding if you are looking for one thing – fun. Where the lake will produce quality cod, the river below the weir produces cod in large quantities but generally of a much smaller size. Bait fishing here will see the kids in with a great change of tangling with a cod on a regular basis. Again bardi grubs are your best bait but cheese and smaller Euro worms will see you amongst the action. Have you ever wanted to fish a Barra Classic or Barra Nationals but couldn’t because of location or cost? Well the Cod Nationals is the event for you. Designed for the country’s keenest anglers to pit their skills against each other over a five day period while chasing the legendary Murray Cod. An exciting fishing format along with massive cash prizes will not leave competitors disappointed. Competitors will fish in teams of two over five days, each day being a varied fishing style. Ultimately the team with the greatest number of

Which makes it perfect timing for ClubMulwala to present its first, “Free on the Foreshore at 4” Easter party. ClubMulwala CEO Alan Rowe is really excited about what the club has planned for the area – and the fact that it’s free. He is bringing one of his favourite Adelaide bands to Mulwala for the occasion – Chunky Custard. “I’ve seen Chunky Custard perform a few times
and they’ve always been fantastic” he said. This six-member band has an enormous reputation for performing to capacity crowds across the country and now it’s Mulwala’s turn. From 4pm on the resort foreshore one of Yarrawonga Mulwala’s local DJ’s will set the mood with music from the 70’s and 80’s. Then, at 7pm, the musical extravaganza begins. Lake Mulwala will be home to fast-paced boat racing action for the EC Griffith Cup on April 29, 30 and May 1. Cup boat races will be hosted on Lake Mulwala from 29th, 30th April and 1st May. The New Zealanders are coming to win back the rights to host the 104th cup, however, there are a number of Australians that will be doing their best to keep this hotly contested event at home. With free spectator entry, food vendors and kids entertainment throughout the weekend, this is one event all should attend. Saturday, April 30 on the Yarrawonga Foreshore, alongside

Something new at Everything you need and more at Yarrawonga Satin & Stones Mulwala Golf Club Resort
S
atin & Stones in Yarrawonga has once again introduced a selection synonymous with style as well as functionality into the range – and this time we’re not talking about lingerie. The store does continue to stock beautiful intimate apparel and the bands represented continues to increase. However, Satin & Stones Proprietor Jenni Much is always looking for new ways to assist customers in their plight to find the right gift or an essential piece for themselves, so she has introduced a range of travel accessories which, by the amount already sold, are just what the travellers are looking for. From the Tosca brand, the Florence Broadhurst design ‘Patchwork’ (pictured) and the ‘Spanish Honeycomb’, luggage collections have gone from strength to strength. There are now many happy customers who can be seen on
overnight sojourns at airports with a piece or two purchased from the store. This is due to the high quality of the range and access to the latest technology and features, all evident in the finished products. In addition to the introduction of luggage, Satin & Stones has thrown caution to the wind and gone all out by incorporating a selection of leisure wear for the cooler months with delivery expected mid-March. You will be thrilled with the labels represented as well as the price points – not forgetting the great range of styles to choose from. Drop in and say Hi to Jenni and browse the wonderful selection on offer. Step back in time at Byramine

isit historic Byramine Homestead to see the oldest homestead in country Victoria. The homestead was built in 1842 by the famous explorer, Hamilton Hume for his sister-in-law Elizabeth Hume and her nine children after her husband was murdered by bushrangers. It is classified by the National Trust because of its unique design featuring octagonal rooms. The central octagonal room is known as the fortress room and allows a clear view of all angles in case of attack from bushrangers or natives. Visiting the Byramine Homestead, with its own brewery and cider house, is a complete experience. The range of beer and cider has
increased to ten varieties and visitors are loving the experience of sampling the diverse range on offer. Guests are able to tour the historic homestead and while visiting enjoy a Devonshire Tea or something off the lunch menu. As the leaves on the giant elms begin to fall and the weather becomes cooler, guests enjoy dining on the historical verandah or by the wonderful fireplaces within the glorious homestead. Visitors delight in spending the day watching the birdlife or the harvesting of the vegetable paddocks surrounding the homestead. Wade, Nicole and their team look forward to meeting you and sharing all the delights of Byramine Homestead and Brewery.
Enjoy a visit to the Byramine Homestead, Brewery and Cider House.

Something for everyone at The Terminus
T
he lovely thing about hospitality is that it is constantly evolving and challenging. At the Terminus Hotel we do our best to keep moving with the times without losing the warm, friendly, old-fashioned service we are so well known for. With live music playing on certain nights in the bar (please call 5744 3025 for updates), a beautiful old balcony to enjoy dinner and/or drinks on and the lovely little beer garden out the back, the Terminus is a pub with something for just about everyone. As the only pub in town with no TAB or any form of gambling, we pride ourselves on our relaxed, family friendly atmosphere. We offer an extensive menu with plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options (please advise staff of any dietary requirements when ordering), a great selection for kids and some delicious house made desserts.
Enjoy a night out with friends at the Terminus Hotel. We source our food locally where possible, most of our wine comes from the Rutherglen and King Valley regions and on the walls you will find a great selection of art all from local artists and available for purchase. The artwork changes regularly – so you’ll have an excuse to come back. The Terminus is owner-operated and on the nights Rachel isn’t putting her children to bed, she’ll be your hostess with the ‘mostess’. A right royal cruise on the Paradise Queen
P
ut your feet up and enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of coffee while taking in a guided tour of the Yarrawonga Mulwala sights from the deck of the MV Paradise Queen. Visitors and locals alike have long become accustomed to boarding the cruise boat for a sojourn around Lake Mulwala. With more than 20 years as a much-loved tourism fixture, the MV Paradise Queen is the perfect way for first-time visitors to get a feel for Lake Mulwala – the ‘heart’ of tourist activity in the twin towns. By taking a cruise early in their visit to Yarrawonga, guests can enjoy a relaxing lunch, afternoon tea or dinner on the water while at the same time learning about all Lake Mulwala has to offer in the way of leisure activities including fishing, waterskiing, photography, yachting and boating. A full cruise commentary also helps guests to become acquainted with the many accommodation and entertainment options available in the area. While tourists are visibly drawn to Lake Mulwala, situated at the end of Yarrawonga’s shopping strip, locals are also inclined to introduce their visiting family and friends to the lake via a cruise on the MV Paradise Queen. Please refer to our website www.paradisequeen. com for the current schedule.
The MV Paradise Queen is also a favourite with bus groups, with more than 200 groups from across Australia stepping on board each year. Functions are another specialty of the cruise boat,
making it perfect for parties, corporate functions, weddings, birthdays and special occasions. For more information contact the MV Paradise Queen skipper Travis Smith on 0418 508 616.

Rich Glen Olive Estate – from the farm to you
A
utumn is here and the Rich Glen Olive Estate garden is overflowing with magnificent climbing beans, sweet tomatoes, aubergine, mixed lettuce, fresh fruits and heaps of flavoursome herbs and spices as well as flowers for the gorgeous beauty range. “My favourite part of the day is harvesting this beautiful produce first thing in the morning which gives inspiration for the seasonal specials on the menu,” said Rich Glen’s Rosalind Vodusek. What’s happening at Rich Glen Olive Estate this autumn? Experience the new, natural skin care range in the ‘beauty parlour’. Try before you buy – it’s so good you could eat it. The Rich Glen Museum is well underway – opening soon – and visitors will be able to enjoy an olive educational experience, learn about five generations of farming in the area, shearing and wool display, the journey from Slovenija to Australia and see a range of old-time machinery, antiques and collectables.
Easter fun is on the agenda with a great range of activities for all to enjoy. Check in regularly on the Rich Glen Olive Estate Facebook page to see what’s in store. Out in the grove the olives are really ‘plumping’ up and the green table olives will be ready to hand pick in the next few weeks. As soon as the olives ‘colour-up’ the new shaking harvester will work its way through the grove over about six weeks, set to produce around 180,000 litres of ‘first-cold pressed’ extra virgin olive oil. Cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) from Rich Glen Estate sees the olives harvested and coldpressed within hours, producing one of the freshest Australian olive oils you can buy. Consume 2 to 3 tablespoons of EVOO every day, its full of vitamins and antioxidants, and helps with anti-ageing, lowers cholesterol and blood pressure and reduces the risk of diabetes and heart disease. EVOO also has a very high smoke point so it is a super healthy oil to cook in.
Try this quick and easy recipe for tuna bruschetta using Rich Glen Olive Estate products; Ingredients; 8 slices ciabatta or focaccia bread 2 cloves fresh Aussie garlic, crushed 2 large fresh picked tomatoes, rough chopped 1 small red onion, finely diced Handful fresh picked basil, ripped Rich Glen balsamic dressing (big drizzle) Rich Glen signature extra virgin olive oil (lashings of it) Salt flakes and cracked pepper to taste 1 can tuna slices, drained. Method; Toss tomato, onion, basil, garlic, balsamic and EVOO in a bowl and set aside for a few minutes for all the flavours to develop. Drizzle EVOO over the sliced bread and grill until golden. Place toasted breads on a lovely big white plate and generously spoon over the tomato mix. Top with flaked tuna pieces, salt flakes and fresh cracked pepper.

The arts and ‘pfine’ Pfeiffer wine go hand in hand
T
he association between wine and art is a close one, it is said that “a wine is to the senses of smell and taste as art is to the eye and music to the ear”. Pfeiffer Wines, a family owned and operated winery in historic Rutherglen, has always maintained a close alignment with the arts. The winery has hosted numerous events over the years promoting art and in fact even a walk around the idyllic grounds demonstrates its love of art. It’s most recent acquisitions include three quirky oxy-cut metal sculptures designed by Dave Doyle (pictured). And the association between the arts and Pfeiffer Wines continues in 2016. Since the beginning of the year the winery has hosted an Art Show at the cellar door with almost 100 pieces showcasing wine or wine related scenes. It has also sponsored MariJana van Zanten and her fabulous Nexus exhibition of Large Works on Paper at Arts Space Wodonga. And the love affair with art continues on into autumn and winter. Between March 26 and April 10 the winery welcomes renowned sculptor Maree Castles.
Maree began working with limestone in the
1980’s and she creates contemporary stone sculptures in the female form.
Maree will work within the grounds of
the picturesque winery bringing blocks of limestone to life as she creates personal works of art before visitors’ eyes.
From July 1 to July 31 the winery will host the
3rd Pfeiffer Wines Photographic Exhibition. Open to all types of photography of any topic
or theme, the exhibition embraces all artists,
from amateurs to professionals with all works of art on sale to the public.
Spring sees the winery participate in the Arts Rutherglen reCycling Sculpture Trail and in
October it also plays host to the Scarecrows Sausages and Shiraz Festival – a ‘pfabulous’ weekend focused on Scarecrow art.
With so much art to see at the winery, you need
to find time to visit the ‘pfriendly’ cellar door

arts and ‘pfine’ Pfeiffer wine certainly do go hand in hand.
Pfeiffer Wines is a five-star, family owned winery that produces a diverse range of award-winning premium wines. The historic cellars and century-old timber bridge are situated in a tranquil, natural setting on the banks of Sunday Creek – an anabranch of the Murray River. Pfeiffer Wines is open 7 days a week. Tastings are complimentary and visitors are always made very welcome. To truly enjoy the idyllic setting, visitors are encouraged to choose their “pfavorite” bottle of Pfeiffer wine and enjoy it with a gourmet picnic hamper on the historic timber bridge overlooking Sunday Creek – a truly unique Australian experience.

Visit Warrabilla Wines this autumn
W
arrabilla is renowned for producing some of Australia’s most intense, mouth-filling wines. Naturally, Durif and Shiraz star in the impressive line-up of reds, achieving incredible levels of ripeness and concentration. But there is more to it than that; look for crisp, delicate Riesling, textural Marsanne and a small, quality range of fortifieds. Andrew and Carol Smith founded Warrabilla Wines in 1991 and moved to their current location on the Murray Valley Highway between Rutherglen and Yarrawonga five years later. In 2012 they were joined by daughter Amy, a sixth generation winemaker; furthering the family’s 150-year tradition of winemaking in Rutherglen. Cellar door is open 10am to 5pm, 7 days a week offering visitors the chance to taste the range of wines and experience first-hand Warrabilla’s signature style. The range features two label standards: The Reserve label is a
prime example of the winery’s style, exhibiting strong varietal definition with immense colour, concentration and fruit flavour. The Parola’s label is a premium wine only made in great vintages with exceptional fruit. Maturation of these wines occurs in new oak barrels. A visit to the cellar door has become a rite of passage for lovers of big full bodied reds. Autumn is a busy and beautiful time of year in the North East with vintage well under way. The crimson and amber foliage falling from the
vines makes for a spectacular sight and the smells of vintage fill the air. With the weather becoming cooler, autumn is a fabulous time of year to explore this beautiful and diverse region. This year Warrabilla celebrates 20 years since first opening the cellar door and the release of our 2015 vintage wines. 2015 was a fantastic year in which we are proud to have produced two of our highly revered Parola’s labels, along with a number of Reserves and a crisp, fruity Riesling. Experience Warrabilla Wines as
part of the much-loved Tastes of Rutherglen festival on the Victoria Labour Day long weekend, March 12 and 13. Chef Gavin of Taste @ Rutherglen restaurant will be on site preparing an assortment of delicacies perfectly matched to our wines. For bookings and information see www. tastesofrutherglen.com.au Easter is also fast approaching and Rutherglen is a popular choice for families to relax and soak up everything our region has to offer. Warrabilla Wines will be closed on Good Friday, March 25, resuming normal trade thereafter. With many attractions and activities around this time of year, it proves a fantastic time to get out and explore. Warrabilla offers a large grassed and picnic area, giving visitors young and old space to unwind and soak up the atmosphere. Be sure to plan a visit Warrabilla Wines this autumn.

he Albury-Wodonga Antiques and Collectables Fair is returning in 2016 with a host of new professional dealers as well as your old favourites. Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton, in conjunction with the Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair Committee and The Zonta Club of Albury-Wodonga, this event has become a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike. April 16 and 17 will see the Mirambeena Community Centre at Lavington transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when dealers from all around the country combine for the fair. Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to twenty different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables
and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector. The Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair is also a fundraiser for Antiques Fair Committee and The Zonta Club of Albury-Wodonga who will be providing delicious light lunches as well as morning and afternoon teas throughout the weekend of the fair. The Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair is open to the public from 10am until 5pm on Saturday, April 16 and from 10am until 4pm on Sunday, April 17. Admission is $9 for adults and includes a lucky door ticket. Accompanied children are free. There is plenty of parking available nearby and wheelchair access into the hall. Celebrating High Country Hops
B
ridge Road Brewers is excited to announce the annual High Country Hops Festival - a celebration of Victoria’s High Country brewers and the 2016 hop harvest – on March 19. Now in its second year, this High Country event brings together like-minded craft brewers and the local growers of that all-important brewing ingredient – hops. This family friendly festival is a celebration of hops, but also features local food producers, musicians, performers, children’s activities and even a chance to try your hand at some archery. The festival will be bringing together the four brewers of the High Country Brewery trail, as well as Rutherglen Brewery who will be offering beer away from their home. The High Country Brewers all share strong links with each other and with local hop growers. Peter Hull from Sweet Water
Brewing in Mount Beauty said of last year’s event “One of the highlights of 2015 for our brewery. A fun day in the grounds of Bridge Road Brewers which showcased the breweries and beers of the High Country Brewery Trail, celebrated the great hops grown in our region and truly captured the spirit of the trail”. James Booth of Black Dog Brewery in Taminick said, “A great day out for the High Country breweries involved and punters alike, fantastic atmosphere and good vibes to celebrate our high country brewery trail and the awesome hops that are grown in our neck of the woods”. Hop Products Australia will again support the event, offering a hop knowledge stand at the event explaining what hops are, and how they are grown and processed. Milawa Cheese and Gundowring Ice Cream will again be featured local producers providing some

smoke’ to join in the action, ph (03) 9419 2823. Bridge Road Brewers will also be hosting many of its customers and supporters including some of their international customers for this event. Don’t miss out, make a date for the High Country Hops festival on Saturday, March 19

A winery steeped in history I f you love a winery with history then a visit to John Gehrig Wines is a must. John Gehrig, a fourth generation vineron, established the vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976, perfectly placed just minutes from the Milawa gourmet region. John’s son Ross Gehrig has now taken on the challenge of guiding the fifth winemaking generation into the future with a focus on crafting fine wine befitting the long history of the vineyard. Ross has an obsession with producing the best grapes in order to produce wines of distinction that will pay homage to this iconic north east Victorian winery. And in 2011, the allure of returning back into John’s original birthplace – Rutherglen - proved too strong so Ross, with wife Meghan, expanded to a new vineyard and cellar door site in Gooramadda, east of Rutherglen. If you are planning a trip to the cellar door this autumn you might just be lucky enough to witness the hustle and bustle of harvest. Call in to Rutherglen or Oxley and catch a glimpse of working wineries during vintage – one of the most important, and busiest, times of the year. And of course there is no better time to visit John
