Deni’s Dachshund Dash The Deni Dachshund Dash is back in 2022. Owners of the breed are being given early warning of the pending race, and are encouraged to enter their little sausages on the day of the Do It In Deni Street Bazaar on Saturday, March 12. Twenty dachshunds competed in the inaugural dash last year, over three heats, before a thrilling final between the top three racers of each heat. Some competitors were dressed to impress, with dresses, sportswear and even a hot dog costume featuring in the fashions. The races had everything, with owners charging down the straight to encourage them to run, some dogs running off course and others taking the time to just play with each other. The final race saw Diane Crofts and her pup ‘Candi-Diana’ claim the victory, and the Deni Dachshund Dash trophy. Dash organiser and Deniliquin Business Chamber executive member Justine Keech said some lessons were learned from the first races, with slight alterations being put in place this year. “I would like to say last year was a bit of controlled chaos, but it was simply chaos,” Mrs Keech said with a laugh. “We have a bit more of a plan this year.

best dressed as well as a trophy for the “fastest ‘hund in the hood”. Mrs Keech introduced the dash to the Do It in Deni Street Bazaar because of her own love for the breed, and the family’s own little dachshund ‘Kendrick’. Affectionately known as ‘Kenny’, the little charmer will be among the competitors this year. “We can put him in, because he’s got no chance of winning,” Mrs Keech joked. “Between Deniliquin and Hay there is a large concentrations of dachshunds.

DENI’S TOWN GARAGE SALE

“When we walk ‘Kenny’ we come across so many others, and then when we had the race they came from everywhere. “Our winner came across from Echuca specifically for the race. “People love dogs, and dog people love to show off their dogs. “Last year’s race was a lot of fun and a real crowd pleaser, and this year’s will be too.” Chamber’s Street Bazaar is based entirely in the Deniliquin CBD.

“We’ll be encouraging more owner involvement to encourage the dachshund’s across the line, which may require them to do a little bit of running.

It’s a chance to pop in to the CBD businesses for some great shopping, with other activities spilling out in to the street and the Deniliquin Waring Gardens.

“Our fencing will also be a little sturdier, as guidance for the dogs.”

There will be street stalls, catering, and family friendly fun and games.

Registrations will be taken from 10am on the day of the race, with a prize for

The event is hosted by the Deniliquin Business Chamber.

Attention all pickers, hoarders, scalpers, and sorters - the Deniliquin Town Garage Sale is back on Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13.

It’s an ideal time to clean out your home, make some money, and meet your neighbours.

Music on the Plains Australian music megastars Amy Shark and Spacey Jane will perform in Deniliquin on SATURDAY, March 12 as part of the second annual Play on the Plains event. Also among the eight artist lineup is Melbourne band Destrends, which is fronted by Matt Savage who grew up in Deniliquin. The other artists set to take to the festival stage in March are Skegss, Northeast Party House, GRAACE, Beddy Rays and The Rions. Play on the Plains is presented by Play on the Plains Festival Inc — the same team behind the famed Deni Ute Muster — in partnership with triple j. The iconic Deni Ute Muster site will turn into a dance floor for Play on the Plains. As a multi-ARIA winning artist, Amy Shark is expected to be a huge drawcard for music fans. After honing her craft and self-producing her music

for years, Amy became a household name in 2016 with the release of her breakout hit, Adore. Destrends will open the festival, and Matt has teed up his bandmates to give his hometown and its visitors the show of their lives. Destrends is a Melbourne based post-punk collective, creating an angular, bass-driven sound. They have built a reputation as a distinctly theatrical live outfit. There’s another Deni connection with Skegss frontman Ben Reed born in Deniliquin. His parents Tony and Michele were teachers, and while they left Deniliquin when Ben was three, the town has always been a second ‘home’. As a twist of fate, Ben’s debut on the famed concert stage on Conargo Rd will be 28 years to the day he was born at Deniliquin Hospital.

The festival gates will open at midday on March 12, and there will be licensed bars, food vans and free, on-site parking. The event will be fully cashless with RFID wristbands and top-up stations on site, and the opportunity for online top-ups prior to the event. Once the festival is over, attendees can retrieve their unused funds online. Deniliquin bus company, Dyson Group, will be operating charter buses to and from Echuca/Moama, Mathoura, Hay, Cobram, Barooga, Tocumwal and Finley as well as a shuttle service to and from Deniliquin Town Centre. For bookings, tickets and further information, go to playontheplains. com.au.

Naponda Garden Expo WHether you’re a green thumb yourself or simply relish in the delights of the effort others put in to their gardens, the 2022 Garden Expo is a must for you. Hosted by the Deniliquin Naponda Hospital Auxiliary and featuring Gardening Australia favourite Sophie Thomson, the expo presents an opportunity for garden lovers of all abilities to learn, mingle, and celebrate the joy of planting.

Then on Monday, March 21, another event will be held from 10am to noon at the Deniliquin Community Garden, in Whitelock St, Deniliquin.

The expo events will be held in Deniliquin, across two separately ticketed days. The first — on Sunday, March 20 — will begin at 10am to 4pm at ‘Marong Station’.

The special guest will also judge a scarecrow competition, featuring contributions from the public and local schools.

Thomson will host two informative workshops — on ‘gardening for health and wellbeing’ from 10.30am and on ‘how to drought proof your garden’ at 12.30pm. She will be available during the day to mingle and answer any burning questions. A host of local businesses and gardeners will host stalls on the day, including Bonsai Bob, Leaves & Vines Nursery and Naponda Store. The Gormans will also be there with their native plants. Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea is included in the ticket price, which is $75 for general admission and $65 for concession holders. Under 12s receive free entry, but will be required to pay for lunch.

This session’s workshop, starting at 10.30am, will be on ‘growing your own’ and tips on composting.

Entrants can register by contacting the Deniliquin Community Garden. Tickets are $40, with under 12s again free. Morning tea and coffee is available to purchase. Proceeds will be used to support Deniliquin Hospital, for items that improve patients and staff wellbeing. The 2022 Garden Expo is supported and funded by grants from Edward River Council and the Deniliquin Community Group. Tickets for both events can be purchased at the Naponda Store in Cressy St, Deniliquin, or online. Go to www.eventbrite.com.au, search for ‘Naponda’ and then select the event you wish to attend.

ART at Easter

Easter in Deniliquin is synonymous with time spent on the water and a variety of local events, but also with art. This Easter is the 29th annual Rotary Easter Art Show in Deniliquin. An exquisite burst of talent from the local area and further afield can be viewed when it is held over five days, from April 14 to 18. Prize categories are this year based on the medium of the artwork, with acquisitive prizes, the viewer’s choice prize and the brand new Judge’s Gem prize helping to attract some of the best talents around. Glenda Cornell will return to Deniliquin again as the guest judge, while Deniliquin’s Sonya Robinson has been secured as the demonstrating artist.

“We think it will be a very exciting exhibition, based on the entries coming in already,” Edward River Art Society member Pam Wettenhall said. “Edward River Art Society partners with Deniliquin Rotary to put on the event, with proceeds then spent on community projects.” The art show is hosted in the Deniliquin Multi Arts Centre, right in the heart of the Deniliquin CBD, in the Deniliquin Waring Gardens.

This special evening is open to all. Tickets are $20. The exhibition then opens to the general public for the next four days. Opening hours are as follows:

Good Friday, April 15 – noon to 4pm.

Easter Saturday, April 16 – 10am to 5pm.

Easter Sunday, April 17 – 10am to 5pm.

Easter Monday, April 18 – 10am to noon.

Sonya works with plant-dyed textiles, inks and natural crayons.

The art show, as is tradition, kicks off with a gala on the Thursday before easter, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on April 14.

General admission is $5 for adults, and children under 16 can enter free.

Throughout the show you can view her art, see her at work and even ask questions about the materials she uses and her techniques.

This is your opportunity to be among the first to see the works on display, and to see who won prizes, and rub shoulders with the artists.

For more information about the event, or how you can enter, go to www.edwardriverartsociety.com or call Pam on 0458 423 871.

Experiencing River Country

What’s On journalist Laura Green shares her tips and recommendations on one of her favourite spots in River Country. It’s no secret that the vast Murray River contains many gems to discover along its banks, but one which still remains mostly off the beaten path is what’s on offer at the Murray Valley Regional Park and adjacent Murray Valley National Park near Mathoura. Situated halfway between Deniliquin and Echuca-Moama on the Cobb Highway, this small town is full of history, art, and brilliant natural attractions to explore. Go for a hike in the cooler months, or a driving tour whenever (mud permitting on those lovely dirt tracks). Stop in town and view the timber heritage trail, or dart straight to Picnic Point where the Murray meets the Edward River, where visitors can go swimming, kayaking, fishing or boating. The cosy town and peaceful atmosphere on the sparkling Murray River are all the more reason to take the leap and visit Mathoura. As a relatively new Deniliquin resident who often gets itchy feet, I’ve found plenty to do when visiting Mathoura, whether that’s stopping on the way to Echuca or making a day of it. Below are a few options for the intrepid

traveller who wants to get out into nature in the Southern Riverina:

1. The ‘stopover’ (1-3 hours) Stop in at Mathoura town centre for a cup of coffee or lunch before heading out to the Crane’s Bridge on the north end of town. Take a right at Clifton St East, just after the speed limit changes from 60km/h to 100km/h. For those of us in smaller vehicles, be prepared for a bit of ‘off-roading’ as this is a relatively rugged dirt track for a sedan or hatchback. Don’t let that deter you though, the earth is nice and compact and the drive is short. Once there, check out the information board to learn about the local flora and fauna. Crossing the timber bridge takes you over the gorgeous Gulpa Creek and beneath the canopy of some enormous giants: the ubiquitous river red gums. This flat, 5km walk is a meandering introduction to this sleepy forest.

Birdsong rains gently down from the tree-tops in early autumn, so if you’re a keen birdwatcher, March and April is the time to visit. This gorgeous walk also embraces the history of the riverlands; Aboriginal markers show sites where the First Nations people — the Yorta Yorta peoples — used the environment to live productively on its banks (including scar trees and middens), along with marking left by colonial settlers who set up timber mills and orchards along the fertile banks of the creek. I spent a couple of hours wandering the track, taking in the sights, sounds and smells. It feels as if time has stopped on this little walk, and the little shacks and jetties along the river only add to the charm. Both tracks can be cycled for those who enjoy a faster pace. The Gulpa Creek trail then joins onto a loop trail, which offers an extra 2km to this gentle hike. If sticking to the 5km stroll, head back the way you came, across the bridge, and you’re off again.

2. The ‘day-tripper’ (3-6 hours) The perfect spot for an afternoon of sunshine and forest, the Picnic Point waterfront is the local family-friendly spot of choice. To page 17…

Experiencing River Country From page 15… On my summer visits, I’ve opted for a driving tour, however this style of road trip is also the perfect way to get out and about when you’ve only got a single day spare. As you head east on Picnic Point Rd, take a right at Tarragon Rd and follow it past the caravan park; this will eventually switch to the Poverty Point dirt road which then forks into two tracks. Take the left track, called Hut Rd, which meanders south alongside the Murray River. It takes between 15-30 minutes by car, depending on how quickly you want to take it. I took it slow so I could see the sights and roll down the windows to let in the breeze. Hop out at any one of the myriad riverside campgrounds and picnic spots or follow it all the way to its natural end — the wide open Swifts Creek Campground.

I had lunch at Swift’s Campground under a red gum, but you could also head back to Picnic Point to dine at The Timbercutter Redgum Cafe Bar & Function Venue. This popular cafe is thriving off its location and delicious dining and catering options, so book ahead. If you don’t fancy the dine-in option, bring a picnic blanket and nibbles along. At any point in this trip, you can hop out for a dip in the river. Picnic Point’s boat ramp is also popular, so boaters, wakeboarders and skiers can take advantage of this one. You can tramp through the bush along one of the many hiking trails — a particularly enjoyable activity as the weather cools. The hidden gem of this one day tour is the Mathoura Bird Hide Boardwalk. I save this for last because it’s the most relaxing and delightful part of the trip.

I had heard about it many times, but I didn’t know what a ‘bird hide’ actually was! Turns out Mathoura’s is a doublestorey hut on stilts over a section of swampland of the park. It allows guests to view the immense birdlife from a hidden location to avoid scaring away feathered friends. Look out for rosellas, superb wrens, black swans and purple swamp hens. Not only are more birds flocking to the swamp and singing prettily at dusk, but the short boardwalk above the slow-moving waters, and amongst the gorgeous riverland trees, is a serene way to end the day.

3. Happy campers (overnight) An overnight camp in the Murray Valley regional or national parks near Mathoura is the perfect way to see this sprawling, 70,000 hectare forest and wetland of biodiverse significance. As mentioned, campsites galore can be found along the Hut Rd to Swift’s

Campground, however the sites are simple, unmarked and amenities are limited to drop toilets and woodfire fireplaces. If you’re looking for a little ‘extra’, stay at Swift’s, rather than a smaller campground, or book in at the wellserviced and close-to-town Edward River Bridge Campground (also near the bird hide), or the Murray Valley Campground off Millewa Rd. Find a spot deeper in the bush or right on the river, but ensure you respect the outdoors and stick to the cleared sites. Make the most of a night in the forest with a barbecue and a good book. And use the stopover or day-tripper plans above to design your own stay; the beauty of the outdoors is you can cast your net as wide as you wish. Book ahead — NSW National Parks requires a booking for all campsites, even free camps. As this spot gains popularity, remember to come early, respect the space of wildlife and other visitors, and follow “leave no trace” principles.

STAY AND PLAY… GOLF IN DENI Deniliquin Golf Club hosts one of the most picturesque courses in the region.

With its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, Deniliquin is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses.

However, off the back tees it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered.

If you’re looking for a trip away, the Deni Golf Resort has you covered with a range of packages, built to take the stress out of finding accommodation. Its 22 units overlook the ninth fairway, and are nestled among bushland.

Poor shots find the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition.

The resort and course are in a superb location on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. It’s just 30m from the resort to the first tee, and it’s a shorter distance to the bushwalk track.

A feature of Deniliquin golf course is the ‘same day play’ principle that applies. On most days you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 and book your tee off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater for your golfing needs.

Trio’s Southern Riverina

JOURNEY

Tony and Juanita BELLHOUSE have had a long term plan to pack up their life in a caravan and spend at least 12 months travelling Australia. They had originally intended to do it before their son Charlie, now nine, started school. But life, and business, got in the way.

“When friends and loved ones became unwell, we thought ‘life’s short, if we keep waiting what if we never get our chance’,” Juanita said.

During the pandemic however, and seeing how it affected the health of some of their close friends family members, the Queensland-based family decided to stop waiting.

“Within six weeks we managed to find a caravan and a new car to tow it.

The first few weeks of their year-long journey brought them to the Southern Riverina, in February.

“We took another few months to get our house ready to rent out, and we just hit the road and started enjoying life.

then jumped on our bikes to explore the historic town and the history of the notorious Ned Kelly. “Jerilderie is where Ned Kelly attempted to get his 8000 word manifesto printed by local newspaper editor in 1879. “The history and learning that came from that was great for Charlie.

“You never know what is around the corner.”

“We did a spot of afternoon fishing off the jetty at

The Southern Riverina was never originally on the family’s radar, but they are glad they made the lastminute change to their route.

park in Deniliquin too, and in both towns we enjoyed

“Friends told us about the Newell Highway, and then when we learned it would take us through Ned Kelly country we thought it would be a great addition to our son’s home schooling. “It was while we were staying at a caravan park in Jerilderie our hosts asked us if we had heard about Deniliquin, so we made sure to go there too. “We had only been on the road for three weeks when we visited the area, but we were on a deadline to meet the Spirit of Tasmania. “We wish we had more time in the area.” At Jerilderie and Deniliquin, the family found plenty of fun activities to try their hand at, and local history to explore. “Pulling into a drive through grassy site at Jerilderie for the night (on February 4) we did a quick set up What’s On Autumn 2022 18

for dinner. “We could actually fish from the back of our caravan some good old country hospitality.” While Deni was added to the list on the advice of their Deni hosts, Juanita said they stop there was set in stone once they learned about The Depot Historic Vehicle and Memorabilia Collection. “My husband and son are both car mad,” she said. “With touches of Hollywood, trucking, transport and Australian motoring this museum is full of nostalgia. “Troy’s favourite was the MK 1 Escort, I loved the pink Cadillac and Charlie’s pick was the big blue Ford truck.” Juanita has not yet discounted making her way back to the region later on the trip, which she said may even be extended beyond the original 12 months. The family are documenting their travels on Facebook, under the name ‘The Travelling Trio’.

RIVER COUNTRY EVENTS It’s time to get excited about autumn events, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy the cooler days in the central Murray River region. Moulamein Fishing Comp The Moulamein fishing competition is scheduled for March 12 and 13. A partnership between the Moulamein Football Netball Club and the Swan Hill Truck service. It will be a fun weekend for casting a line. Participants will be able to compete for a plethora of prizes, including:

The Cade Hickey Memorial: the biggest native fish caught during the comp wins $2000 cash and the Cade Hickey Memorial trophy.

Murray cod adult section (Swan Hill Truck Service longest Murray cod): the first session runs Saturday 7am-12pm; second session Saturday 12pm - 5pm; and third Session Sunday 7am-11am.

registration in early to secure your spot. Participants can earn FIBA 3X3 ranking points, and help push you up the rankings ladder, win prize money and keep fit all at the same time.

Mathoura Easter Duck Race Not to be missed, this duck race will take place on April 17 at Picnic Point. Produced with the help of local organisations and community spirit, this race is a fun event for the family. Entrants release their, hopefully, speedy rubber ducks into the Edward River at Picnic Point to see which can make it over the finish line fastest. The ducks will be sold at the Mathoura Easter Fair the day before the race, for $5 a duck. The winner will claim a whopping $700 for the prize. Spectators can attend for free, and while there won’t be a ‘pooch parade’ this year, the event is dogfriendly. Attendees can grab a sausage, hamburger or drink from the barbecue, starting from 11am. The race will start at 1pm.

Teddy Bears’ Picnic On March 20, the Kerrabee Soundshell at Moama will host another exciting event, this time catering to the ‘littlies’. Australian children’s band The Mik Maks will be performing for kids and their teddies. Other fun activities include pony rides with Billabong Ranch, bubble fun with Twisted Science, a crafting and photo booth fun with Moama Anglican Grammar, and giveaways from Bunnings Echuca. Moama Lions Club will be running the barbecue, offering hot chips and cold drinks. The Port Ice Creamery will be selling Echuca Moama’s favourite ice cream, and if you are in need of a caffeine jolt, Let’s Do Coffee will be there to help. This event is free for the whole family. Dress your teddy bear to impress.

Champions League Basketball 3x3 The Moama Recreation Reserve is hosting a champion league basketball 3-on-3 competition between March 25 to 27. The tournament will start with an Open’s Competition on Saturday, March 26 from noon. Free entry for spectators. This event is open to all skill levels and genders. Gather a team of three or four mates together and get your

up open to all. The Best Easter Bonnet competition and Best Decorated Bike competition will give those with a creative flair the chance to shine. Updates at the Visit NSW website.

Cycling Competitions The 2022 AusCycling MTB XCO National Cup – Ride The Murray Urban Short & XCO – will be raced this year at Echuca-Moama. The event will take place over April 2 and 3, to the delight of riders and spectators. Hosted by Echuca Moama MTB Club, the Ride the Murray Urban Short and XCO is a Gold National Cup event. Supported by Murray River Council, the event will be held on the banks of the Murray River.

Mathoura Easter Fair Saturday, April 16 should be a lovely day at the Mathoura Memorial Gardens for anyone in town; the Mathoura Easter Fair will host a barbecue, market stalls, musical entertainment and a street parade. A Tug of War competition is also being held, with sign-

An artist and explorer’s

PARADISE

“You can take three or four photos of the Murray River in a space of five minutes, and each can look completely different.” That mix of colours, shadows and light is what appeals to artists like Cheryl Mahon-Howard, and her equally artistic family members. And that’s why the family now had plans to take an annual trip to Picnic Point near Mathoura each summer, to enjoy the surrounds and capture it in their various art forms at the same time. From Mathoura — from where Picnic Point is “just down the road” — Cheryl was joined by her daughters Michelle Donlen and Rita Howard, Michelle’s husband Darren Donlen, her granddaughter Gracie Berryman and Gracie’s partner Joshua Evans for the family trip. Cheryl is an oil painter, Michelle dabbles in water colours, and Darren is a photographer. And each of them spent many hours using their special skills to immortalise the trip. “My daughter painted the river, and my son-in-law was just amazed at the wildlife,” Cheryl said.

“I paint in oils, and everywhere you look there is a new view of the river to take in. “We went to Picnic Point for a family trip — we all just happened to have the same weekend off — but where ever we go we take our paints and cameras. “You can sketch on the riverbank, start painting plein air (outdoors) and then take it back to the studio to finish it off. I’ve actually already sold one of the paintings I started at Picnic Point. “I love painting the river — the sun comes down through the trees and reflects on the river. “The reds and yellows of the sunset on the browngreen river is such a great contrast.” Darren, who works in tourism on the Great Ocean Road — was amazed by the wildlife that abounds at Picnic Point and Mathoura.

He was particularly taken with the azure kingfisher, which would just “hang around”, and the massive wedge tail eagles. “It’s just an awe inspiring place,” Cheryl said. “And even if you are not an artist, there’s lots to do. “It was hot when we were there so we took our floaties and pool noodles, went down to Picnic Point and floated back to our accommodation at Tarragon Lodge within about an hour. “There are also some great walks, mini golf, canoes, and you can go fishing too. “The area is dog friendly, as long as you keep them on a leash. “We’ve already booked again for the same time next year.” Mathoura is located 40km north of Echuca-Moama and is a spectacular gateway to one of the largest red gum forests in the world. It’s an enchanted wonderland for lovers of the Australian bush, the river and the great outdoors. The forest, which stretches more than 70,000 hectares and includes wetlands of international significance, has arguably the best access in the region to the Murray River. It features good dry weather roads and sprawling low river banks that feed out across gloriously flat sheets of water. Mathoura is a popular destination for those seeking the gentle country lifestyle and a peaceful retreat in the heart of a beautiful natural environment. It has a rich and unique history, a charming main shopping street, a vast array of public artworks, a popular calendar of events, and beautiful forests and waterways at every turn. There’s so much to see, touch and experience in this little slice of river paradise.

Koondrook Wharf is more than just a wharf — it is a place to experience and reconnects the town to the river. It not only provides a greater connection between the township and the river, but also exemplifies the unique location and showcases the local history. At the entrance to the wharf, an inground sculpture greets all visitors. The Redgum, slate and basalt mural is based on the Koori story and features the Murray, Gunbower Creek, Redgum forests, the Kerang lakes and the river through to Murrabit as told by local Barapa Barapa elder, Aunty Esther. Pitch a tent in River Country

Home to five mighty rivers and an impressive collection of creeks and backwaters, River Country is never short of a sandy riverbank or shady bush setting to set up around a campfire with the family or spend a quiet long weekend fishing. Escape the crowds and claim a secluded campsite at one of the many natural riverside clearings or forest settings throughout the area.

Gunbower Forest is on the Victorian side of the Murray River and Koondrook–Perricoota Forest is on the NSW side.

You can keep it simple with just a tent, swag and campfire or really glamp it up with your camper trailer, van or self-contained motorhome. In most cases, you can even bring your dog.

Both forests are listed as Ramsar wetlands of international importance, and are ‘icon sites’ under the Living Murray Program.

Places to camp:

The forests are ideal for camping, walking, canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and fishing. You can also take the Gunbower Island Forest Drive from Cohuna to discover the rich history of the forest.

Campbell’s Island State Forest Campbell’s Island State Forest has a great selection of camping areas along the Murray and Little Murray Rivers just north of Barham. What the area lacks in amenities (no toilets) it makes up for with 4-wheel driving, bush walking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Dogs are welcome here, and many areas are accessible to 2-wheel drive vehicles.

Best access is via Moulamein Road or East Barham Road just out of Barham, or from the south-east near Moama. Check for regulations and closures at the NSW Forestry Corporation website, or Parks Victoria at www.parks.vic.gov.au.

Best access is via North Barham Road.

Moulamein River Reserve

More information at www.forestrycorporation.com. au.

Follow the historic Moulamein River Walk and find a spot for free camping on the banks or in the nearby bush, close to the Edward River, right near the centre of Moulamein.

Gunbower–Koondrook-Perricoota Forest The Gunbower–Koondrook–Perricoota Forest covers approximately 51,000ha of the Murray River floodplain downstream of Torrumbarry Weir, between Echuca and Barham.

While there are no facilities, toilets and water are available at the nearby Moulamein Football Oval and Bowling Club. What’s On Autumn 2022 31

The area offers great fishing and a quiet place to relax, with the added advantage of being close to Moulamein to stock up on supplies or grab a coffee. Park in the Big Tree Car Park off Moulamein Road and explore the area on foot from there.

Kyalite Campground Between Tooleybuc and Balranald, the Kyalite Campground hugs a bend in the Wakool River. Part of the Murray Valley Regional Park, the area offers free bush or riverbank camping in unmarked sites. There are no facilities. Entry is just off Yanga Way, east of the Wakool River. Close by, off Kyalite Road, is another river and forest camping area, this time on the banks of the Edward River. More information: at www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au.

PLAY & Relax Public spaces in Finley have undergone massive improvements in the past year. Finley FOUNDRY Park

Mary Lawson Way Side Rest

One recently completed is the Finley Foundry Park — a ‘pocket park’ situated between CBD businesses in Murray St. Its attractions appeal to local families and visitors through the region, offering a space to not only play but to enjoy a meal purchased from one of the nearby eateries.

Located on the Newell Highway, this park surrounds a water hole. Please beware that it is very deep and can be dangerous. The Mary Lawson Way Side Rest is the perfect rest stop after a long trip. It is also perfectly located next to the Finley Museum and Log Cabin, which is open most days or by appointment. Go to the museum, see the replicas and have a walk through the McAllister Homestead, and the original Myrtle Park School, which was built in 1896. For more information on the Museum and Log Cabin, call Henry on (03) 5883 1374 or Dan on (03) 5883 1907.

The play equipment is interactive, and pays homage to popular local businesses of the past. It is aimed at younger children, and nature based play. There’s a water play area and a fruit and veg shop and bakery. There’s also an alfresco area.

Finley RAILWAY Park Also recently improved is the Finley Railway Park, which now features a soundshell, footpaths, seating and barbecue facilities, following a $389,000 upgrade completed last year. The soundshell was christened by the Finley Chamber of Commerce during its’ Christmas Xtravaganza celebrations in December. It has since hosted Australia Day celebrations and countless picnics and barbecues. These are only two of the parks and gardens locals and visitors alike can enjoy in Finley. Others are:

Finley Memorial Park The Finley Memorial Park is located on the Berrigan Road. This park was dedicated in memory of the local soldiers who lost their lives in the first and second world wars. The Anzac Day memorial service is held in this location each year. The park also has a children’s playground.

Skate Park & Canoe Tree The Finley Skate Park is situated on Denison St, Finley. The park offers youth the ability to have a go on the skating facilities and play on the swings. You can get into the skate park from the Newell Highway by walking through Rotary Park. Along the way have a look at the Aboriginal artwork, including the Canoe Tree.

Diggers Park Diggers Park is located on the corner of Dawe Avenue and Donaldson St. It is situated next to the Finley Hospital and is great to get away to a quiet area. Please be aware that there is no longer children’s play equipment in this park, however there is quite a large area with many shady trees and benches.

Finley Lake Finley Lake has provided a welcome oasis for the weary traveller, as well as being a venue for many and varied pursuits from fishing to bird watching, sailing and canoeing to power boating and water skiing. It is what gives just cause for the adoption of the phrase ‘Finley – By the Lake’.

Community gardens The Barooga Community Botanical Gardens is situated in the main street of Barooga, and were established in 1992 and opened in 1993. The local community raised all the funds to establish the gardens. The pleasant surroundings of the gardens lend themselves to weddings and social functions, but is also just a great place while away a morning or afternoon. The gardens have a children’s playground and free barbecue facilities.

trees which include a Lone Pine, Wollemi Pine and Kauri Pine.

The Bullanginya bunyip fountain — named after the creek that flows through Barooga — is one of the highlights of the space. Although named as a bunyip, the fountain has been designed as a dragon, and is a lively sculpture for the pond. It brings to life a static rock garden, which in itself is beautiful to behold.

The Barooga Library Park is situated next to the library, on Golf Course Road (last left before you start travelling towards Cobram). The park has a new children’s playground and facilities for relaxing. It is in a great location with the ability to be able to borrow books then go to the relaxing area in the park. Children can be entertained inside the building and out on the playground.

Created by Barooga sculptor Tom Ranken, the dragon was made using recycled machinery, keeping with the agricultural aspect of the local region. The dragon’s backbone was a piece of steel brought back from World War I. Garden committee members say it was used by the light horse regiments, and was screwed into the ground rather than hammers to limit noise. The fountain is also made up of rabbit traps and horseshoes. The fountain was paid for by donations, and sales from the Barooga Botanical Gardens nursery. Other features of the gardens are the large palm trees at the entrance, a commemorative sun dial and

Barooga Adventure Playground The wonderful Adventure Playground is also adjacent the library on Golf Course Rd. It features a specially designed multi-aged play unit, steel frame rope climbing structure, double flying fox, basket swing, quad framed swing, Kinder house play unit and four round in ground trampolines. This space also includes the Barooga Splashpad, open from 10am to 8pm daily, regardless of the weather, from October to April (and possibly longer dependent on demand). It has a button to activate the water as well as a separate hand pump to operate the irrigation system. What’s On Autumn 2022 35

An even better foreshore considered a premium country market by visitors and stallholders alike.

The Tocumwal Foreshore has always been a place locals and visitors alike have enjoyed for its beauty and recreational attributes. And it’s only been improved in recent years with the addition of a splash park and, more recently, completion of the long awaited foreshore retail and dining space. The famed Tocumwal ‘Big Murray Cod’ — popular with those looking for a selfie that really says ‘Tocumwal’ — which has long stood at the edge of the foreshore also recently received a makeover in celebration of all the improvements. The Tocumwal Foreshore Park is located along the river foreshore on Deniliquin Rd and Anzac Ave. There is playground equipment, numerous seats and tables with magnificent views of the Murray River. The boat ramp is located next to the park, with many bakeries, cafes and small shops just across the road. You can also hire bikes and canoes and travel along the bike tracks.

Photo courtesy Bob Neville, Tocumwal on the Murray in Photos.

The Tocumwal splash park is located on the foreshore at Anzac Ave and is open from 9am to 9pm daily, regardless of the weather, from October to April (and possibly longer dependent on demand). Tocumwal was home to the largest Royal Australian Air Force base in the southern hemisphere during World War II and this history influenced the style of the splash park. It features a giant custom made airplane (B24) dumper bucket, a cockpit, water cannons, ground

sprays, windsock and propeller showers, and spray bomb features, shade sails and in-ground LED lighting. The foreshore is home to the popular Tocumwal Foreshore Markets.

There’s always new and exciting products at each market including designer jewellery, ladies fashion clothing, handbags and shoes, fishing and sporting gear, pet supplies, plants and seedlings, fruit and vegetables, tools and equipment, antiques, designer garden sculptures and brush art, handmade glassware, candles and soaps, cosmetics and beauty products, artisan bread and conserves — to mention but a few. There’s also plenty of options to treat yourself at one of the catering sites, including the Tocumwal Rotary orange juice stand.

The market is held monthly through much of the year, but does go in to recess in the cooler months.

Everyone is welcome, but there are to be no dogs at the market by council regulation.

The foreshore can accommodate up to 215 stallholder sites and is one of the oldest markets in Australia. It was established in 1978, and is today

Markets for the rest of the season are on March 12, April 17 (Easter Sunday), May 7 (Mother’s Day) and June 11 (Queen’s Birthday long weekend).

Take a walk through

WAAAF HISTORY The Tocumwal WAAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force) Creek Walk is an enjoyable creek sidewalk lined with interpretive signage. It honours and celebrates the WAAAF story that inspires pride, sparks new interest in an under represented piece of Australia’s service history. At the start of the trail stands an impressive art installation that makes a great statement about the women and their dedication to protecting the country. The walk was officially opened last year. It was a collaborative initiative between Berrigan Shire Council, Tocumwal Rotary and the Tocumwal Farmers’ Market. This project was supported through the Create NSW Arts and Cultural Funding Program.

Its creation was made possible with a grant from Create NSW of $10,000, a Berrigan Shire contribution of $32,000 and a grant from the Rotary Club of Tocumwal of $10,000.

Sculptures, artworks and interpretive signage for the WAAAF Creek Walk was researched, written and designed by Sivonne Creative, and constructed locally by VisAttak.

It’s also a great opportunity to get back to nature, with the trail also a bird watcher’s paradise.

The WAAAF Creek walk follows the creek from the corner of Hennessey St/Barooga Rd and the golf course. It is the same track used by the WAAAF women during World War II, and it is wheelchair friendly. Art along the trail includes an outdoor sculpture depicting the WAAAF women supporting a plane and signage posts.

The outdoor museum is the only memorial to the WAAAF in Australia, and it’s only the first project in a multi-stage Tocumwal WAAAF Creek Walk master plan. It’s not only history you can soak in while on the walk.

Take time to watch the ducks happily swimming, listen to the kookaburras calling, or the cockatoos and galahs contently gabbling in the trees. If you are patient, you may also see some of the other colourful birds that frequent the area. Bird lovers have rejoiced at seeing blue faced and white plumed honeyeaters, pied kurrawongs and male and female superb fairy wrens among the trees, and many other winged beauties.

The Murray River here separates Victoria’s Barmah National Park from the Murray Valley National Park in NSW. Combined, the area ranks as the world’s largest stand of River Red Gum.

Hear fascinating commentary form your certified eco guide about the hundreds of species of water birds, animals and native fish that have made the Barmah Wetlands and Forest their home, and about myths and legends of this very special area. Kingfisher Cruises owner/operator Benita Cox has a double degree in Applied Science — Parks, Recreation & Heritage & Applied Science — and Eco Tourism from Charles Sturt University. Also a qualified eco-guide, Benita enjoys sharing her “office” and giving a commentary for most of your journey. Cruises are again departing from the day visitors area at Barmah Lakes. Please remember to bring your water bottle and a hat when cruising.

It is a wildlife haven for 236 bird species, 50 mammals and more than 500 plant species.

“The rainbow bee eaters are just spectacular at present, and azure kingfishers, nankeen night herons and tawny frogmouths, snakes and one lazy koala have also been sighted,” Benita said.

When water levels allow, the twohour cruises also explores the Barmah Lake and a short land excursion is often included along the way.

ROAD TRIPS & TOURING ROUTES The Timber Cutter’s Run

River Country Trails

The Timber Cutter’s Run is a unique touring route along ancient waterways and through ethereal forests... a touring route that reveals a story of an earthquake 60,000 years ago, the Cadell Fault, the Narrows (Barmah Choke), a 50km sand ridge, the redirection of the Murray River, and the creation of the Millawa-Barmah forests— the largest stand of River Red Gum in the world. The Timber Cutter’s Run is a touring route through the central Murray Catchment of the MurrayDarling Basin from Moama to Balranald visiting Barmah, Mathoura, Deniliquin, Moulamein, and Kyalite along the way.

With a variety of towns and attractions to visit throughout your journey we invite you to discover River Country’s history, heritage, sensational food and wine through a series of touring routes. Each trail can be completed as a standalone day trip or you can link each trail to explore all of River Country at your own pace. The trails include River Forest Trail, Edward River Trail, Wakool Murray Trail, Murray Meander River Trail and Perricoota Trail. Find out more @visitrivercountry.

The Kidman Way— Backtrack to the Outback This trail starts at Jerilderie and officially ends at the near-desolate town of Barringun on the NSW/QLD border. After leaving Jerilderie (a keystone in the Ned Kelly story), the Kidman Way heads north through the productive farming town of Coleambally, past the largest solar farm in Australia and onto Darlington Point on the Murrumbidgee River; learn about the history of the punt and bridge.

Bird Trails of the Riverina Collectively The Rock Reserve, Galore Hill, Brookong State Forest, Mundawaddery Travelling Stock Reserve & Cemetery, Milbrulong School Forest, Tootool Wetlands and Pleasant Hills are recognised as Bird Trails of the Riverina.

Long Paddock Touring Route The Long Paddock is a unique touring route, which follows the 610 kilometres of the Cobb Highway (named after the famous coach company) from Echuca/Moama on the Victorian border, through the towns of Deniliquin, Hay and Wilcannia, leading to the outback towns of Bourke, Broken Hill and White Cliffs. Interpretive panels are located at significant sites along the Cobb Highway.

Long Paddock Sculpture Drive Trail The Long Paddock boasts 11 major public artworks along the route, reflecting the heart and soul of our small rural communities. The route also showcases a series of timber sculptures, designed to pay tribute to the significant economic and social contribution of the timber industry to the region.

The Backroads Trail Take a detour off the beaten track and discover the wonder of the Backroads Trail. Meet the locals, taste the home-grown produce, sample the boutique wines and explore our rich cultural, artistic and social heritage. The trail also highlights the close ties farmers have with their land and the innovative ways in which they are working to ensure its sustainability for future generations. The Backroads Trail is located in the rural area north of the Murray River between Barham, Moama, Mathoura and Deniliquin. It’s simple to navigate and offers a true farm gate experience!
