Whoever gets the most likes will win a swag of prizes and be named as part of the Fashions in the Field judging. We are also looking forward to another production from the Echuca-Moama Theatre Company. This time they will be staging Anything Goes and early reports from rehearsals tell us this could be one of the company’s best shows. Certainly not one you will want to miss. The Lions club will be descending on EchucaMoama in May to stage their national convention, also expecting more than 1000 people to be here for a few days. The Flavour Festival is also on again — this year on May 15 — and once again it will be

If taking it easy is more your style you won’t get anything more entertaining and laidback at the same time than the annual Winter Blues Festival. This year it will run on July 28–31 and there will be legions of musos setting up all over the district playing their blues and roots music. Best of all it’s free. And of course no bride-to-be, or prospective bride, will want to miss the annual Weddings Expo. It’s a total opportunity to learn more about how you can best stage your wedding — from under the gums at Aquatic Reserve to one of the many venues around Echuca-Moama. It will be held at the Echuca Sports and Entertainment Centre on High St on May 22. After all this you will need to stay on in town and have a holiday to recover from all the things you will want to see — and try. So make sure you make the most of your time in Echuca-Moama.

A crowd gathers to watch “Fashions on the Field” at Echuca Races last November.

>> The new-look day will entice punters and fashionistas in equal measure to the beautiful Echuca Racecourse and offer race goers a fantastic day out. A family friendly event, the cup caters for everyone and everything including casual entry, to all inclusive dining packages. Recently departed Echuca Race Club chief executive Alex Doble said more than 2000 people would descend on the racecourse for an enjoyable weekend of racing. Punters can watch the action from the course or enjoy the Winning Post Enclosure for $130, including racecourse entry, exclusive enclosure, race book, gourmet buffet, open bar (beer, wine, sparkling, soft drink, water) and access to TAB and amenities. Fashions on the field prizes will exceed $2000 and offer those with a passion for fashion a chance to showcase their style to the crowd. The Echuca Cup always attracts a strong race field. “The Moama Bowling Club Echuca Cup is worth $80,000 — and with the date shift, the race now falls two weeks before the $100,000 Swan Hill Cup, offering trainers and owners a great opportunity to contest both races,” Alex said. “This is a growing event and every year I am overwhelmed by the support we receive from locals. It really is a family friendly celebration of racing in the North East that offers something for everyone.” Complimentary shuttle buses operate to and from the course and there is a wide range of catering options available from snack bar through to the dining room. >> Organiser, and Perricoota wine region president, Trent Eacott said the committee was looking to capitalise on the success of last year and offer a genuine culinary experience for visitors. The inspiration for the event came about after local producers decided it was time to get the word out on how great their products really are. “We really felt there was a gap in the calender which recognised how great our local food and wine is so we decided to do something about it,” Trent said. The festival offers visitors a chance to sample award-winning regional wines alongside mouth-watering food created by businesses all located within Murray and Campaspe Shires. Saturday night will see participating restaurants put on a feast of local cuisine but it’s Sunday where most of the action lies, with demonstrations a feature of the festival. Chef Troy Jarrett from Morrisons will cook up something special after Pacdon Park butcher Pete Tonge supplies him with a product fresh from his butchering demonstration.

28

Jason Coobes from Three Black Sheep will also prepare a gastric treat while Tracy Luscombe from Tracy’s Cake Decorating delights the crowd with her cake decorating finesse. Lisa from Wallingford Flowers will also create a floral masterpiece. The local Tafe Koorie cooking students will cook up Australian bush tucker with a modern twist and Trent said if last year’s treats of kangaroo koftas and emu meatball were anything to go by,

The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 12-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish and chips.

Fish in a Flash uses only premium Australian fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

CAPTURING imagination and learning about science through hands on fun has been a pretty good formula for local business twistED as it celebrates its first year by winning the Inland Tourism Award and making it to the finals for the Victorian Tourism awards in the new business category. Owner/operator Kathy Stubberfield’s combination of fascinating, interactive displays which encourage learning through participation, touch and discovery is fast becoming one of the major attractions in the port area. twistED is both a tourist attraction and a learning centre for schools, it also has the facilities to host children’s birthday parties. “I have been surprised in some ways by our success, but I also knew that it would be great for Echuca to have a tourist attraction that offers something other than focusing on the historical side of the area,” Kathy said.

“More then 50 per cent of our visitors do try the insects and it is just a fun way to break the ice on arrival,” Kathy said. There is also a variety of live insects that can be bought out of their displays (not for eating of course) and handled by the kids. “We like to change the exhibits to keep things fresh and this year we are looking at changing some of the bigger ones. It has been a pretty amazing journey really.” The twistED tots playgroup and science club has also been a new initiative that has appeared to take off. Children aged between two and half and four can spend a couple of hours once a week reading a book and then doing a related science experiment.

Visitors to twistED can entertain themselves creating things at the flying table, looking at how things spin on the spinning table, discover what makes light and how contours on a map work using augmented reality.

twistED is open 10 am – 4 pm and 10 am – 5 pm Tuesday and Thursday.

Kathy also has an interest in entomophagy which is the practice of eating insects and visitors to the centre are always encouraged to try one.

Entry is children $10.50, adult $14.50. adult concession $11.50 and family including two adults and four children $45.

Entertainment flows through the threeday weekend and includes a number of novice and open events, trail riding and of course the axeman’s competition, organised by the Victorian Axemans Association. ‘‘Saturday is our big feature event — the Stockman’s Challenge. Owner John Nunan said he was thrilled to have achieved this honour in the standard accommodation category.

‘‘The resort has been involved in the awards program over the past five years and has achieved success consistently, but this is the first time we have managed to achieve gold in NSW and then in a national arena,’’ John said. Lions Clubs are ready to roar FOR the first time in the history of the event, Echuca-Moama will host the Lions Club annual National Conference May 12–16. Over 1200 people are expected to converge on the twin towns which will generate some serious tourist dollars while also providing another opportunity to showcase our beautiful region to an outside audience. The theme for the convention is ‘Riverboats get steamed up in Echuca,’ and visitors will be able to take in all the sites the town has to offer after the business of policy, projects and reports is completed. Surrounding towns will not miss out either with plans to bus group loads of visitors to different destinations within the shire. Lions Club president Barry Higgins said the convention is a real win for the town and it is estimated to generate around $500,000 for the local economy. “We are sourcing as many things locally as we can.

“Surrounding Lion’s clubs have been asked to provide lunch each day so they can share in the event too. “We are the smallest Lions club in size to be asked to host this event and we are very proud of that,” Barry said. “We have organised a program that highlights the many great tourist attractions we have on offer including a civic reception on the PS Pevensey and an opening ceremony on the wharf.” The Lions Skin Cancer mobile screening unit will be on site throughout the convention and will be open to the general public.
