There is plenty to see and do at The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre.
Echuca-Moama turns it on all year Festivals, food, music, history, paddlesteamers on the Murray or just communing with nature, you can do it all when you come to the twin towns THERE is no better place than the state of the art Port Of Echuca Discovery Centre to unlocking the secrets behind the history of our great town. The Discovery Centre is a must-see as it transports you back to the 1860s and explores the events and individuals who provided the foundation for what is now the twin towns. Centrally located at the port, the centre provides the perfect place to kick start your tour of Echuca-Moama and its modern and interactive displays provide information and outline our colourful history. The working steam display and sawmill
are showcased alongside the beautiful historic wharf and are a tourist mecca. Whether it’s a quiet sit and stroll or something else, it is a great place to start. From time to time some of our living legends pop down and you never know who you might be lucky enough to bump into – and learn from. You might even be interested in a trip on one of our magnificent paddlesteamers or a historic town walking tour or the slightly spookier Port after Dark Tour where you can hear the story behind some of the legends from the past and some of the darker secrets.
Of course Echuca-Moama has a proud and prosperous riverboat history but that is not the only thing that makes our town such a great place to visit.
with events such as the Southern 80 Ski Race, the annual Riverboats Music Festival or the scrumptious Flavours of Echuca Moama Festival.
There are wonderful day trips along the Backroads Trail, The Gold and Ironbark Trail or parts of the Long Paddock touring route which connect with many of the smaller towns and communities in our region – and a chance to sample the fine foods produced from the abundance of wineries or cellar doors through to our local restaurant and pubs.
Or the Winter Blues Festival for the cooler weather.
There is always something to see or do and we have a busy summer on offer

They’re off and racing — to Echuca May 28 The Echuca Cup is the highlight of the local racing calendar and is a full-on day of fashion, food, entertainment and some of the best horse racing in regional Australia
Jockey Brooke Sweeney takes Leveraction out to the barrier gates.

be running competitions leading up to the event which will be advertised on Facebook, radio and in the paper.”
This year’s cup will be held Sunday, May 28 and as usual will attract a large crowd for the fun filled day, featuring great racing and family entertainment.
While the focus of the day is on racing, there are always plenty of activities to keep the kids amused as well as live music and a big screen TV.
The drawcard of the day — the $80,000 Moama Bowling Club Echuca Cup — is expected to attract a strong field.
Fashion will also feature on the agenda with the hotly-contested Fashions on the Field.
Last year’s cup winner Leveraction was trained by Echuca’s Daryl Archard, and the horse went on to be named Horse of the Year by Country Racing Victoria.
Whether you choose to watch the day from the covered area of the pavilion, one of the many enclosures or on the lawn area, one thing is a safe bet — you will have a great day of country racing.
Echuca Race Club chief executive Leigh Newton said they have introduced some new initiatives for the day.

WHAT'S ON – Autumn-Winter 2017
Take a gander at the good old days June 10–11
There’s nothing like some vintage machinery to give you a great glimpse of how we did things in the good old days when there was plenty to get steamed up about CENTURY-OLD machinery, vintage and classic cars, motorcycles, steam traction engines and wagons will fill Rotary Park in June for the 54th Steam Rally. The two-day rally is one of the region’s longest running major events and showcases more than 700 exhibits of working history, with some of the exhibits valued in excess of $500,000. Saturday will see The Clan Macleod Pipe Band lead the grand parade, followed by the steam rally beneficiary, steam engines and rollers, tractors, cars and trucks. At 3 pm the horse drawn implements and log buggy will enter the horse
arena in a spectacular display for the visitor. On Sunday the crowd favourite ‘burning down the dunny’ will light up around 2 pm. Every year the Fire Museum of Victoria generously donates its famous steamer allowing visitors to see first-hand how it was used to put out fires in days gone by. While the weekend is all about steam, camp cooking and country kitchen fresh scones will be on offer to keep the tummies full. The miniature railway, pony rides and
other activities are also available to keep those little people entertained. The rally is held at Rotary Park, Campaspe Esplanade Echuca. Gates open Saturday, June 10 from 9 am to 4.30 pm and Sunday 9 am to 4.30 pm. An adult day pass costs $20, child $5, senior $15 and a family day pass is $45.

Spamalot — it’s not a lot of spam but it is a lot of laughs May 26 – June 3
Echuca-Moama Theatre Company has delved into a cult classic with its latest production and will be bringing the hilarious stage adaptation of Monty Python and the Holy Grail to the twin towns at the end of May. ECHUCA-MOAMA Theatre Company will be entertaining the twin towns this year with its performance of Monty Python’s hilarious Spamalot. This much-loved musical comedy is an adaptation of the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail and made its debut on Broadway in 2005. EMTC directors Lesley Summers and Trish Deakin will be putting their own spin on the cult classic, saying audiences are in for the show of their life.
“It’s big, bright, colourful and contains just enough naughty bits (low level
language and simulated violence) to keep the big kids entertained,” Trish said. “Whether you’re a member of the Monty Python fan club or new to its irreverent humour, there’s truly something in this show for everyone,” she added.
The 31-strong cast is being drilled by Georgy-winning choreographer Jodie Baker and musical director Michelle ‘Squish’ Davis. Eight performances will be held at the Paramount from May 26 – June 3.
“This show is so funny, and many of our people have been waiting years to do it,” Lesley said.
Show times are Friday, May 26 at 7.30 pm; Saturday, May 27 at 2 pm and 7.30 pm; Sunday, May 28 at 2 pm; Wednesday, May 31 at 7.30 pm Friday; June 2 at 7.30 pm and Saturday, June 3 at 2 pm and 7.30 pm.
“Now it’s here they are really making sure they put on something special.”
Tickets are available from the Paramount.
Lesley agreed, saying with what she is already seeing from the cast during rehearsals audiences are in for a treat.

YOU can talk about it until you are blue in the face and people still can’t hear enough. About the Echuca-Moama Winter Blues Festival that is. And it’s back again from July 27–30 for four days of great sounding blues and roots music. The festival is a regular fixture on the Echuca-Moama entertainment calendar and attracts more than 15,000 people for an extra-long weekend of stirring, soulful, sensual blues and roots music — the perfect antidote for a bad case of the winter blues. The historic port precinct, and the restaurants and hotels that line its streets, throw open their doors as they welcome the large crowds and great music from the country’s best blues musicians. This year will be the first time music will be played on the Echuca Wharf and the organising committee is pumped with anticipation of this historic setting as a sound stage.
The Star Hotel and Gypsy Bar were popular venues last year.
The introduction of music co-ordinator Justin Rudge will ensure bands and venues are linked and with more venues opening on the Thursday night, the stage is set for another spectacular. More than 40 blues and roots acts — from soloists to bands — from across the country will entertain the crowd from 30 stages. While some artists are turned over each year to keep the line-up fresh and exciting, there is always those few crowd favourites who return year after year. People travel far and wide to make it to Echuca-Moama for the festival and from its humble origins the festival has played its way onto the national calendar of festival musts. So you must not miss it in 2017. Organisers are urging visitors to the town to get in early and book accommodation because it is always a sell-out.

The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 16-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish and chips.
Fish in a Flash uses only premium Australian fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

Monichino — it’s Italian for wonderful wines Turning a dream and a carport shopfront into a successful and highprofile winery is a multi-generational story that started 55 years ago WHEN it comes to wine, the Monichino family know a thing or two about it.
of preservatives from high quality, low yielding vines.
After all, they have been producing wine from their Goulburn Valley vineyard for the past six generations.
Producing more than 27 varieties from crisp, refreshing whites to fullbodied reds, spritzy dessert varieties and decadent fortifieds, Monichino is also well known for the traditional Italians — Pinot Grigio and Barbera.
Established by Carlo and Margaret Monichino, the family business has come a long way from the early days of selling wine from the family’s converted carport. Today it encompasses a cellar door, picnic area, function room and wedding and dining venue — and a mighty reputation for producing some of the best wines in the region.
In 2012 the award winning winery celebrated its 50th anniversary and is showing no signs of slowing down. Carlo Monichino migrated to Australia in 1949 looking for a better life after leaving war torn Italy behind.
It is a true family owned and operated business with a rich Italian culture flowing strongly through its veins.

involved in the business and it seemed after years of hard work, dedication, perseverance and faith, things were finally coming together.
When his two brothers decided to migrate a couple of years later, Carlo found his way to Shepparton with seven shillings and four pence to his name. A transport company offered him work and after discovering he could speak English, was given the job of a truck driver. He met and married Margaret, had two children and decided it was time to turn his dream of making wine into a reality. The family moved to an estate in Katunga and planted the vineyard — and added another child.
The tragic death of Margaret in 1988, following an illness, saw a changing of the guard with daughter Anna taking over her mother’s role of running the cellar door. Carlo remained winemaker and eldest son Phil helped in the vineyard while youngest son Terry headed to university to study winemaking. In 2000 the winery opened a new cellar door with Anna managing sales and Terry as the winemaker.
Many years of hard work later the couple opened up the carport cellar door and began to sell wine to both locals and tourists. Every member of the family of five was

Then relax as the stars appear and the river wildlife begin their nightly chorus. Duration: Three hours (approx.)
