Welcome! THE Echuca- Moama region is jam packed with things to do over the winter- spring period and just because the temperature has dropped, it doesn’t mean you need to spend your days huddled up next to the fire. If activity is on your mind, the annual community Sweat vs Steam foot race will get your heart racing and your legs pumping. Every year this great event raises money for the local community and it’s not every day you get to test your mettle against the oldest paddlesteamer the PS Pevensey.

Speaking of community events, the Breathe Easy Cocktail Party in support of Cystic Fibrosis is on again in August. Organised by local sufferer Shari Butcher, the ball raises much needed funds for this genetic condition that has no known cure and yet affects one child in every 2500. So if you are looking for a great night out, some dancing and great music, get yourself a ticket and head out to Radcliffes. If you like things a little more slow paced then take yourself for a drive out to the Old School Winery and Meadery at Woomboota. Hosts Frits and Suzanne Massee are very accommodating and proud of their business which not only produces wine, but mead, one of the oldest alcoholic beverages in the world. You won’t be disappointed. Spring is also the time for The Elmore Field Days.
This is a great family fun day which features not only agricultural products and demos, but great activities for the kids, great food and plenty of things to fill in your day. And this year, the event will be held in the school holidays and what better way to fill in a day with the kids. And of course we can’t forget the Deni Ute Muster. This event brings thousands of people to the township of Deniliquin, who pour through the gates for a weekend of sensational country music and entertainment. As always there are a mountain of activities available which include miniature pig races, circus, ferris wheels and dodgem cars to name a few and the AFL grandfinal will be broadcast on the big screen, so football lovers can still get their fix. There will be fantastic music by Lee Kernaghan, Shannon Noll, The Sunny Cowgirls and The McClymonts among others and if you are looking for a fun filled weekend, you probably can’t go past the biggest party on the plains- The Deni Ute Muster. Phew I don’t know about you, but there is plenty to see and do here in Echuca- Moama so get stuck in and enjoy some of the events we have on offer.

There is plenty to see and do at The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre.
Echuca-Moama turns it on all year Festivals, food, music, history, paddlesteamers on the Murray or just communing with nature, you can do it all when you come to the twin towns THERE is no better place than the state of the art Port Of Echuca Discovery Centre to unlocking the secrets behind the history of our great town. The Discovery Centre is a must-see as it transports you back to the 1860s and explores the events and individuals who provided the foundation for what are now the twin towns. Centrally located at the port, the centre provides the perfect place to kick start your tour of Echuca-Moama and its modern and interactive displays provide information and outline our colourful history. The working steam display and sawmill
are showcased alongside the beautiful historic wharf and are a tourist mecca. Whether it’s a quiet sit and stroll or something else, it is a great place to start. From time to time some of our living legends pop down and you never know who you might be lucky enough to bump into – and learn from. You might even be interested in a trip on one of our magnificent paddlesteamers or a historic town walking tour or the slightly spookier Port after Dark Tour where you can hear the story behind some of the legends from the past and some of the darker secrets.
Of course Echuca-Moama has a proud and prosperous riverboat history but that is not the only thing that makes our town such a great place to visit.
with events such as the Southern 80 Ski Race, the annual Riverboats Music Festival or the scrumptious Flavours of Echuca Moama Festival.
There are wonderful day trips along the Backroads Trail, The Gold and Ironbark Trail or parts of the Long Paddock touring route which connect with many of the smaller towns and communities in our region – and a chance to sample the fine foods produced from the abundance of wineries or cellar doors through to our local restaurants and pubs.
Or the Winter Blues Festival for the cooler weather.
There is always something to see or do and we have a busy summer on offer
The friendly staff at the Visitor Information Centre can provide you with all the details on the region’s attractions and events and are more than happy to answer your questions and help out anyway they can. The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 16-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish and chips.
Fish in a Flash uses only premium Australian fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

>> The Adam Eckersley Band gets the party going Saturday night followed by The McClymonts, Drew McAlister, Shannon Noll, Sunny Cowgirls and The Wolfe Brothers. The MCs for the weekend are Yackandandah comedian, singer and songwriter Pete Denahy and crowd favourites, Sunny Cowgirls. There is plenty of family fun included this year, with wood chopping and whip cracking demonstrations, the world record blue singlet challenge, ute count, ute show’N’shine, the bull ride spectacular, the Brophy Bros Circus,
Matt Falloon and his trained balloons, camel rides, and the iconic driving competitions. Other entertainment includes bubble soccer, soccer darts and the bungee run. For the little musterers, the family centre will be open from 9 am with free children’s activities including face painting, bubble blowing, stilt walking, hookey and much more. The Deni Ute Muster wouldn’t be complete without the carnival corner. Crowd favourites including dodgem cars, a Ferris wheel and fast paced rides for the adrenaline junkies will be
returning this year. Matt Mingay, Australia’s number one stunt rider and extreme sports athlete, along with his son Madzy Evel, will be making their Muster debut entertaining crowds with their Off Road Show over the weekend. Other new attractions for our 19th birthday include the reptile awareness display and miniature pig racing. Sure to be a crowd highlight, these incredible trained miniature pigs race through obstacles to get to the milk trough.
Lowry said a huge party was expected for 2017. “We are excited to be celebrating Lee Kernaghan’s 25th anniversary and what makes this celebration even more special is the fact that Lee performed and was part of our first Deni Ute Muster back in 1999,” she said. “I look forward to welcoming everyone to this year’s Deni Ute Muster to celebrate Australia’s largest party on the plains.”

John Haw, Steve Naismith, Anthony Hession, Brett Healey and Peter Holmfield at last year’s Echuca’s Biggest Blokes Lunch.
Tom Souter, Wayne Cowley and Jim Cipriani at last year’s Echuca’s Biggest Blokes Lunch. >> THE Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch provides an opportunity for men around the district to get together and talk about their health. The overarching theme may be serious but the lunch itself focuses on fun and frivolity, with good food and a few beers to get the day started. A guest speaker will be in attendance but at the time of going to print had not been confirmed. Organiser Dick Phillips said the event was the legacy of the late Chris McPherson, who was an executive director of the McPherson Media Group, the Riverine Herald’s parent company.
Former VFL/AFL premiership-winning player and coach David Parkin was a special guest speaker at last year’s Echuca’s Biggest Blokes Lunch.
Paul Magnay, Adie Daly, Clem Cregan and Bob Bird at last years Echuca’s Biggest Blokes Lunch.
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer at 53 and died in December 2015 at the age of 61. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) and is the fourth leading cause of mortality among Australian males, with 3294 deaths in 2011. Around 92 per cent of males diagnosed with prostate cancer survive five years from diagnosis and in 2017 it is estimated 16,665 new cases will be diagnosed in Australia. “Women are very good at communicating about health issues but men aren’t, so this event is all about trying to get blokes to take some responsibility for their own health,” Mr Phillips said. “Every year around 400 blokes turn out for the sellout event which is held at the Echuca Racing Club. “We all know someone who has been affected by cancer at some point in their life whether it is prostate, bowel or breast, which is why it is important to make health a priority.” The Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch will be held on Friday, October 6, at the Echuca Race Course. Featuring a vast array of dolls and teddy bears in every shape, size and colour imaginable, the show is a must for enthusiasts, with people travelling across Victoria and NSW to attend. In the shrinking world of doll shows, Echuca-Moama’s is a standout event and still attracts good numbers each year. This year will be the 17th event and organiser Liz Baxter is looking forward to another strong show. “We are expecting our numbers to be similar to last year, which attracted more than 40 entrants across the categories for competition dolls and soft teddies,” Liz said. People make and dress their own dolls or soft toys and each is
allocated a certain number of points. Each section can have multiple winners and the dolls aren’t compared to each other –it’s more of an individual competition. “We will have stalls including dolls and accessories, teddies lace and craft supplies. The Doll Doctor will also be in attendance to help out with any damaged doll enquiries.”

Each year the committee donates funds from the day to a local charity — last year Echuca’s Specialist School was presented with a cheque for $1 000. Doors open from 9.30 am – 4 pm at the Anglican Church Hall, High St, Echuca. Admission is $5 for adults, concession $4.50 and children over six $2. WHAT'S ON – Winter–Spring 2017
Tom Smith, Shari Butcher, and Jason Russell at last year’s event.
IF YOU are looking for a fun night out why not grab yourself a ticket and head off to the Breathe Easy cocktail party at Radcliffes in Echuca on Saturday, August 12. The fundraiser offers a great chance to kick off your heels and dance up a storm while raising funds for the lifethreatening disease cystic fibrosis. Organiser and Breathe Easy founder Shari Butcher said the night would be fun filled with prizes, raffles and silent auctions. General admission tickets are $110
and include entry, drinks, finger food package and entertainment, while premium package tickets are $135 and include a paddlesteamer cruise departing from the Port of Echuca at 6 pm, which includes drinks, canapés and entertainment. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic condition that seriously affects the lungs and digestive system — Shari has been suffering from it since birth. “I don’t know life any other way. I take more than 30 tablets a day, complete physiotherapy and inhale nebulisers twice a day and visits to the Alfred

every two months among many other things,” Shari said. “As I have gotten older and learnt more about my own CF and the sliding scale of severity of the disease, I count myself so lucky to be in a position where I can lead a relatively ‘normal’ life, and put my efforts into raising funds and awareness to hopefully one day see a cure found.” Over the past two and half years the group has raised nearly $60,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust, and Cystic Fibrosis Victoria.
“The money raised from our events goes towards providing support to patients and their families with equipment, respite costs and advocacy work for ensuring new medications and trials are accessible for CF sufferers, and most importantly, towards the research being conducted into finding a cure.“ One in 25 adults in Australia carry the CF gene with 95 per cent not knowing — and one child in every 2500 is born with the condition. Tickets can be purchased at www.stickytickets.com.au/53106 or in person at LJ Hooker Echuca.

Brides carry or wear ‘something old’ on their wedding day to symbolise continuity with the past and the ‘something blue’ in a bridal ensemble symbolise purity, fidelity and love.
Queen Victoria started the Western world’s white wedding dress trend in 1840 — before then, brides simply wore their best dress. Dresses and traditions vary from country to country but in Japan,

Honeyed wine how sweet it is
Frits and Suzanne Massee’s Old School Winery and Meadery has been producing boutique wines and mead (honey-based wine) for the last 20 years. THE couple are very proud of their family-run winery with daughters Freya and Kate very much a part of the business that draws visitors from across the country.
“All our red and white grape wines are made with locally sourced fruit and we grow a few barbera grapes of our own which make a lovely red wine,” Freya said.
Open seven days a week except for Christmas day, Good Friday and Anzac Day morning, the Old School Winery is the perfect place to lose a few hours of your day, sampling wine or mead or both, looking at the beautiful pottery made on site or just sitting back relaxing in the beautiful garden surrounds.
“We have been making mead for generations too. Dad inherited some great recipes which are the foundation for our own varieties and mead is just as important as the wine for our business. We have people who travel all the way out to us, to specifically try our mead.”
The Massee family has been making mead and wine for generations and they take pride in producing a quality drop.

Seasonal conditions and the different varieties of honey all affect the taste and flavor of mead.
WHAT'S ON – Winter–Spring 2017
“As a rule, red gum mead is more consistent in taste, but the honey does vary with the seasons which give it a different taste as well,” Frits said. Traditional mead is very syrupy but the family produces both dry and sweet varieties. “The technology to make both wine and mead is similar which keeps our equipment working all year round,” Freya said. “Mead is a delightful drink and 90 per cent of the people who try it for the first time don’t know what to expect but end up loving it,” Suzanne adds. The Old School Winery and Meadery is also home to
a working pottery with a large variety of handcrafted stoneware available for purchase. The beautiful gardens surrounding the cellar door are also the perfect place to sit down and have a cup of coffee and visitors are encouraged to bring their own picnic basket. During the long, hot summers, the big old peppercorn trees provide welcoming shade while in the winter months, guests can congregate around the potbelly stove. Cheese platters are available on request and dogs are also welcome. For more information visit www.theoldschoolwinery.com.au
