31 EVENTS CALENDAR

What’s on the EchucaMoama events calendar over the next few months.

THE Echuca-Moama region is jam packed with things to do over the winter-spring period and just because the temperature has dropped, it doesn’t mean you need to spend your days huddled up next to the fire. If activity is on your mind, the annual community Sweat vs Steam foot race will get your heart racing and your legs pumping. Every year this great event raises money for the local community and it’s not every day you get to test your mettle against the oldest paddlesteamer the PS Pevensey. If you like things a little more slow paced then take yourself for a drive out to the Old School Winery and Meadery at Woomboota. Hosts Frits and Suzanne Massee are very accommodating and proud of their business which not only produces wine, but mead, one of the oldest alcoholic beverages in the world. You won’t be disappointed. Spring is also the time for The Elmore Field Days. This is a great family fun day which features not only agricultural products and demos, but great activities for the kids, great food and plenty of things to fill in your day. And this year, the event will be held in the school holidays and what better way to fill in a

day with the kids. And of course we can’t forget the Deni Ute Muster. This event brings thousands of people to the township of Deni, who pour through the gates for a weekend of sensational country music and entertainment. As always there is a mountain of activities available which include miniature pig races, circus, Ferris wheels and dodgem cars to name a few and the AFL grand final will be broadcast on the big screen, so football lovers can still get their fix. There will be fantastic music by Lee Kernaghan, Shannon Noll, The Sunny Cowgirls and The McClymonts amongst others and if you are looking for a fun filled weekend, you probably can’t go past the biggest party on the plains — The Deni Ute Muster. Phew I don’t know about you, but there is plenty to see and do here in EchucaMoama so get stuck in and enjoy some of the events we have on offer.

Safe boating on NSW waterways

When it comes to the Murray River, which borders Victoria and New South Wales, the laws of NSW apply. Wear a lifejacket Lifejackets are the most important piece of safety equipment on any recreational vessel. An approved lifejacket must be carried for each person on board most vessels. It must be the correct size for the wearer, in good condition and worn in a range of situations, for example: • Children under 12 years are required to wear a lifejacket at all times in a vessel under 4.8m, and when in an open area of a vessel less than 8m that is underway

WE A R A LIFEJACK ET

• On vessels less than 4.8m, everyone must wear a lifejacket when boating at night or when boating alone • On canoes and kayaks, everyone must wear a lifejacket at most times, including at night or when boating alone. These are only some examples of the lifejacket wearing requirements on NSW waterways. If using inflatable lifejackets, these must be serviced at least every 12 months or at longer intervals in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions. For more information visit rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime.

Alcohol and drug offences

When towing or wake surfing

Breath testing, including random breath testing (RBT), can be conducted on the operator of a vessel while it is underway, including drifting. Permissible concentration of alcohol limits are as follows:

You must have an observer onboard who is responsible for observing the towed people and reporting all matters affecting them to the master, including vessels approaching from behind. The observer must be at least 16 years of age or hold a boat driving licence, must not be under the influence of alcohol or a drug, and should be familiar with the standard hand signals.

0.00 for recreational vessel operators aged under 18 years

Consider the impact of your vessel’s wash on other people and the environment, ensuring your wash does not have a dangerous, damaging or unreasonable impact.

Less than 0.02 for commercial vessel operators over 18 years Less than 0.05 for recreational vessel operators over 18 years The operator of a vessel includes anyone steering or exercising control over its course or direction, and includes the observer in a ski boat or PWC and anyone being towed.

Safety on houseboats When you hire a houseboat you will be advised how many people are legally allowed on the vessel at any one time, whether underway or moored. The maximum number on any houseboat is 12, but this could be less depending on the size of the vessel. If you exceed the maximum number of people you may affect the buoyancy of the vessel and cause it to capsize. Never jump from houseboats. It is an offence and you could hit unseen snags in the water, or slip and hit the edge of the boat.

CUP FOR GRABS Tuesday, November 7

THE Moama Bowling Club Melbourne Cup Day will be held at Echuca racecourse on Tuesday, November 7 with the gates opening at 10.15 am. The seven-race meeting attracts more than 4000 revellers who enjoy the atmosphere and fun of a great country race day. Fashion also plays a huge part of the day and with prize money of more than $6000 up for grabs. It is no wonder Fashions on the Field is such a popular event. Last year there were more than 130 entries across the categories, from junior to the ladies and organisers are expecting just as many again this year. “Competitors come from near and far just for the fashion on the field, all our sponsors are local and are great supporters of the racing club,” ERC chief executive Leigh Newton said. And there is more to racing then just horses 12

and fashion — there will be heaps of free children’s entertainment, games and new fun competitions. The Carlton and United Breweries Clydesdale team will again be part of the action and children both big and old enjoy having their photo taken with those gentle giants of the equine world. Live music and big screen TVs will also operate throughout the day; ensuring patrons have the opportunity to watch the race that stops the nation — The Melbourne Cup. There are plenty of hospitality options available on course from an umbrella package to a ticket in the glamorous Colts and Fillies enclosure with live music and plenty of dancing. Packages available

include general entry, umbrella, shade canopies, mini and corporate marquee and dining in The Pavilion. Membership is available for $85 or $110 for members and guest, which guarantees you entry to the members’ enclosure. Buses will run from Echuca-Moama to the course and all parking is free. For more information visit www.country.racing. com/Echuca or phone 5482 2487. Echuca-Moama is also hosting the Melbourne Cup Tour final leg on Tuesday, October 17. RIDE ‘EM COWBOY — AND RUN, CLIMB, CRAWL

Sunday, November 4

IF YOU are looking for as much fun as a physical challenge can be — and don’t mind getting dirty along the way — then the Brumby Run is for you. The 6 km, 8 km or 12 km event is held at Billabong Ranch in Echuca on Sunday, November 4. The 30-plus obstacles are designed to test every participant mentally and physically and it doesn’t matter if you have to run, walk or scramble your way around the course, as long as you make it over the finish line in the end. Participants can nominate for any of three events and can even change course mid race.

The first wave kicks off at 11 am and participants must be 13 years of age or over at November 4. Organiser Kerri Aquisto said she was expecting more than 350 people to participate in the event, which is affiliated with the Obstacle Course Racing League of Victoria. “The Brumby Run is gaining in popularity each year and it is a fantastic fun day,” Kerri said. Cost of registration to August 31 is $85, while late

registration (September 1 onwards and subject to availability) is $95. Registration includes a straw cowboy hat, medallion, stubby holder and a can of beer or soft drink, along with a sausage sizzle. Team entries are in for a chance to win a lucky group prize and the largest group entry also receives a prize. A bar will operate all weekend and there is no BYO alcohol.

Entertainment includes music and drinks around the campfire Saturday night and rooms are available from double through to team rooms of 12 from $30pp at the Ranch, bring your own bedding. A $10 parking fee applies with all proceeds going to the local CFA. For more information on the event visit www.facebook.com/ billabongranchbrumbyrun

PADDLE, PADDLE, PADDLE YOUR CANOE (KAYAK OR BOARD) GENTLY DOWN THE RIVER November 20-24 IF YOU are up for a challenge and you love the river why not jump in a canoe or kayak, or on a paddleboard and join the Massive Murray Paddle? Running from November 20–24 and covering 404 km, the paddle is certainly not for the fainthearted but it can be covered as a whole, in a leg, in a team or individually. While there is no denying the event is physically challenging, the atmosphere and emphasis is still on fun and teams take great pride in making sure they fit into the event with quirky names, logos and uniforms — all an essential part of the event. Formerly known as the Red Cross Murray River Marathon, the paddle has been running for many years and provides a great opportunity for participants to raise money for their favourite charity along the way. The paddle is open to

20

individual paddlers who can enter as serious racers or recreational paddlers or teams, categories include school team relays, the K4 challenge or the homemade/DIY challenge. Set your own personal goals and paddle for one day, two days or the entire five days or aim to cover 50 km, 100 km, 200 km or the full distance. People take on the paddle for many different reasons but all get to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the river. Quiet corners, long stretches, wide beaches, tall forests and stunning scenery contribute to the uniqueness of the event and is certainly one of the biggest drawcards. EXCELLENT EXCUSE FOR Monday, AN EXTRAVAGANZA November 6 THE first Tuesday in November is synonymous with Melbourne Cup Day race day celebrations and our region is no different. Except we also have the added bonus of the Echuca-Moama Cup Carnival on the day before. Presented by the Echuca and Moama Business and Trades Association, Hare St goes into lockdown as traders take to the streets and shoppers fill their baskets and bags with the bargains of the day. Hare St is closed from 7.30 am on Monday, November 6 as traders prepare themselves and set up their street stalls for a busy day. A spokesman for the traders association said the twin towns were a

vibrant tourist attraction during the spring and summer period and the cup carnival is the unofficial start. “Melbourne Cup week is a busy time and retailers are keen to benefit from the influx of tourists,” he said. “It is a fun filled family day out and there is something for everyone — from the person looking for that special bargain to something to keep the kids entertained. “Shopping is a pleasant part of the holiday experience, especially here in Echuca-Moama,” the spokesman added.

YOU CAN HAVE A FIELD DAY AT ELMORE October 3-5

THE Elmore Field Days are now well into their second half century, with the 54th year to once again educate, entertain and inform the large crowds that will flock through the gates over the October school holidays. With more than 700 exhibitors packing the grounds, there is something for everyone — from the latest in machinery and cars, to tools and pools, plants, cattle yards, hardware and a great variety of food to keep you fuelled up while you meander your way through the sites. There is always plenty to see and do with inpaddock demonstrations running daily from 11 am, showcasing the latest developments and information in tillage, 28

spraying, sowing and haymaking. Shearing and woolhandling demonstrations will be held in the shearing shed during the three days. This year live music will be provided by up-andcoming singer/songwriter Jemma Beech, who has just returned from Nashville. Jemma will be performing on all three days. RELAY FOR LIFE IS AN UNBROKEN CONNECTION October 21-22 THE community of Echuca-Moama will have the opportunity to celebrate life and raise funds for cancer when the 14th Relay For Life event is staged, from October 21–22. Organiser Ayden Shaw said the relay will again be held at the Moama Recreation Reserve and 12 teams have entered to date. “Relay For Life is a community event open to anyone — it is a celebration of life which also happens to raise funds for cancer support and research, it encourages social interaction and physical activity and it just a great thing to be involved in,” Ayden said. The walk kicks off at 4 pm Saturday and teams will walk through the night and finish at 9 am Sunday. There will also be live entertainment throughout the weekend.

“Our guest is motivational speaker Ben Pettingill and we also have music from Brian Watts, Jefferson Smith and Tim Grey.” The committee is hoping to organise a market before the event and there will be a kids’ zone with activities and a food truck on site. A new initiative this year is the school award. “Some of our schools have been busy organising events and raising funds throughout the year and the award is in recognition of that achievement. “Echuca-Moama is such a great community and I want to thanks everyone for their support,” Ayden said.

Elf directors Glenn and Kim McFadden.

STAGE IS SET TO LAUGH IT UP November 10-12 and 17-18

ELF THE MUSICAL JR will come to life in time for Christmas.

Husband and wife team Kim and Glen McFadden will co-direct EchucaMoama Theatre Company’s latest production. The couple said it was a comedy so people could expect fun and laughter and lots of singing. Elf tells the hilarious story of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Years later, Buddy finds

out he is human and heads to New York City in search of his father, Walter Hobbs. He finds him, but Walter doesn’t believe in the spirit of Christmas. Faced with the harsh reality that Walter is on the naughty list and his half-brother, Michael, doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his birth family and help New York City remember the true meaning of Christmas.

The cast of 41 includes Ruby Green who plays Buddy, Harper Raverty as Jovie and Britney Evans as Walter. The production’s creative team includes Victoria Pannett who has been appointed musical director, while Emma Favaloro and Kaitlyn Platt are the choreographers. Elf The Musical Jnr will be performed at Echuca’s Paramount Theatre on November 10–12 and 17–18.

NO CHURCH BELLS, JUST WEDDING BELLES Until October 29 WEDDING bells might not be ringing at Echuca Historical Society but their big display from now until October 29 is all about brides. The Wedding Dress Through Time is a chance to enjoy the exhibition of bridal gowns and wedding memorabilia. Margaret Hart, who is helping co-ordinate the exhibition, said the society has been given a number of wedding dresses over the years. Most of them are from the 1920s to the 1970s — but the oldest goes back to 1847. Until Queen Victoria married in white in 1840 the colour was virtually never seen at a wedding — after 1840 it became the predominant colour in the western world. “The dress we have from 1847 is actually green and while we don’t have a photo of the bride in it, understandably, we do have a painting,” Margaret said. “It was worn by a Mrs Kinnair but we do not have much detail beyond that. “We also have a brown one which is most unusual but mostly they are white or ivory — we don’t have a black one, which was a popular colour before Victoria. EHS is at 1 Dickson St, Echuca and it is open from 11 am to 3 pm. Further details are available from EHS on 5480 1325.

A BLOODY GOOD IDEA

Friday, October 13

EVERY day 35 Australians are told they have blood cancer. A diagnosis like this immediately plunges the sufferer and their families into a world of gruelling medical treatments, fear and uncertainty. Light the Night is a fundraiser organised by the Leukaemia Foundation to raise funds for support services and on October 13, Echuca-Moama will be hosting their own. Organiser Bill Kuluris said Light the Night is an evening for the whole family. “The walk starts at 7.30 pm over the bridge and finishes at the Aquatic Reserve, where there

46

will be food stalls and entertainment,” Bill said. All fundraisers receive a coloured lantern to carry as darkness falls. Gold lanterns represent and remember loved ones lost to blood cancer, white lanterns are held by those who have been diagnosed while blue lanterns are held by community members. In its 10th year, this moving event brings Australian communities together in more than 140 locations to remember and reflect during an intimate ceremony and short lantern walk. Last year, more than

WHAT'S ON Spring 2017

35,000 people from all around Australia attended an event and together raised more than $2 million. Blood cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death in Australia and it kills more Aussies than breast cancer or melanoma. Although research is improving survival someone still loses their life to blood cancer every two hours. GETTING INTO THE MOOD AT THE BIG COHUNA November 3-7

THE Big Cohuna Festival is an action-packed program that rejoices in everything Cohuna and surrounding districts has to offer. Running from November 3–7, the five-day festival explores the town’s natural wonders, agriculture, delightful local identities and their many individual and varied businesses. Presented by Operation Next Gen, festival coordinator Jodie Hay said the event celebrates all things Cohuna. Highlights of the five days include: • Art • The Big Cohuna Feasting Table • Street buskers • Market • Workshops • Cruises along Gunbower Creek • Yoga or paddle boarding • Catch a carp competition • The Duck Derby • And the list goes on and on — this one is just scratching the surface.

The festival’s official opening is Friday, November 3 at the civic centre garden and includes a welcome ceremony, music by Daniel Aaron, paddock to plate feasting table, catering provided by Burbury and Mathers and Restdown Wines. Tickets are $65 with bookings via the Cohuna Gateway Centre. “The festival provides an opportunity to explore our agricultural and environment base,” Jodie said. “It also celebrates our local food producers and our artists and allows you an opportunity to get out and about and visit some of our places that are not always open to the general public,” she said. Perhaps one of the more innovative events on the timetable is the Farm Yard

Frolic, which will be held on Monday, November 6 from 9 am – 1 pm. The frolic includes a diverse range of local farmers and businesses opening their gates to the public and includes the Elm Tree Nursery, the Little Pig Pen, Windella Farm, Shukara Park, Elmar Farms and 400 acres. Cost is just $5 per person but maps and wristbands must be prepurchased from Cohuna Gateway Centre. There are opportunities to cruise two different parts of the Gunbower Creek, aboard the Wetlander or Cohuna Nature Cruises, with dining options including lunch

and dinner, or if you are after something a little lighter — a cheese and wine evening. The event finishes with a Melbourne Cup Day luncheon on Tuesday supporting the Cohuna Hospital Auxiliary. The festival has been running for four years and more than 40 individuals, businesses, school and community groups now support the initiative. “It is going to be an absolutely fantastic five days and I urge each and every one of you to come along and see what we have, I am sure many of you will be surprised but what the festival has to offer,” Jodie said.

WHAT'S ON Spring 2017

OUR PORT HISTORY GOES INTERACTIVE A MAJOR redevelopment of Hopwood Gardens looks as though it will become a happy Mecca for tourists and locals — especially the young ones making the most of a significant playground upgrade A state-of-the-art playground development in Hopwood Gardens is set to become a major new attraction for the port area. Both residents and tourists will benefit from the $520,000 project, which will see interactive elements with a historic setting allow children to

have fun and play safely. And all in the heart of downtown Echuca. Featuring a paddlesteamer shell with port deck, an open cubby with play table, 1 m high slide, triple swing, turtle play sculpture with tunnel, spinner, frog spring rocker, water play pump and channel, hay bale climbers and vertical and horizontal play logs, it is all centred on a long neck turtle play sculpture (representing the variety native to the region) built atop a tunnel. The area surrounding the complex will also be upgraded with table and park seating, drinking fountain, recycled brick paving, stone wall

edging, pathway, decking constructed from timber from the Echuca wharf refurbishment and landscaping. Input from Campaspe school children has played a major part in the design, with the students having a starring role in some of the design elements. As a further part of the development the Allison Barge will be relocated from its current home to the southern end of the precinct, creating a period entry point from the southern end and further open the view to the river from Hopwood Gardens and Warren St. Campaspe Shire mayor Adrian Weston said the

project will benefit the town. “Development of the new Hopwood Gardens play space, along with landscaping and linking paths connecting the entire port precinct to the new home of Allison Barge at the southern end, will provide a wonderful experience for all ages and interests,” Cr Weston said. “The play space will no doubt provide hours of fun and adventure for children of all ages and abilities. “The unique and interactive elements will allow children to safely explore, hide, jump, swing, slide, climb, tunnel through, spin, rock and leap,” he said.

Last year 80 shearers took part and more than 500 people attended the event, helping raise more than $5000. “We shared the money between Deniliquin hospital, the Cancer Council and fuel vouchers

for local cancer sufferers,” she said. “We are hoping to do even better this year and raise more money. “Things are moving along at a rapid pace and we have had some great sponsors climbing on board but we are always looking out for more.” Registration opens at 9.30 am and shearing begins at 11 am. THE DENI-ZENS DESCEND September ON DENI UTE MUSTER 29-30 UTE and country music enthusiasts don’t have to wait much longer for the 2017 Deni Ute Muster.

Held on the Labour Day long weekend — September 29 and 30 — the Muster is one of the top festivals in Australia, with more than 18 000 people converging on the plains for a weekend of music, mateship, fun and, of course, utes. Featuring Lee Kernaghan, Shannon Noll, The McClymonts, Beccy Cole, Sara Storer, Sunny Cowgirls, James Blundell and Brewn, The Wolfe Brothers, Caitlyn Shadbolt, Adam Eckersley Band, Hurricane Fall Drew McAlister, Jetty Road and the Davidson Brothers — with more acts still to be announced. With a lineup of that depth and caliber this year’s event is going to be one helluva party. Getting the festivities started as the sun sets over the plains on Friday is Melbourne-based trio Jetty Road, followed by Hurricane Fall, making their Deni Ute Muster debut. James Blundell, The Davidson Brothers, Sara Storer, Beccy Cole and Lee Kernaghan are the headline acts to complete opening night. 66

Entertainment in the main arena kicks off on Saturday with the world record blue singlet count, followed by the AFL grand final on the big screen. The Adam Eckersley Band gets the party started Saturday night, followed by The McClymonts, Drew McAlister, Shannon Noll, Sunny Cowgirls and The Wolfe Brothers. The MCs for the weekend are Yackandandah comedian, singer and songwriter Pete Denahy and crowd favourites, Sunny Cowgirls. There is plenty of family fun included this year, with wood chopping and whip cracking demonstrations, the world record blue singlet challenge, ute count, ute show’n’shine, the bull ride spectacular, Brophy Bros Circus, Matt Falloon and his trained balloons, camel rides, and the iconic driving competitions. Other entertainment includes bubble soccer, soccer darts and the bungee run.

WHAT'S ON Spring 2017

For the little musterers, the family centre will be open from 9 am with free children’s activities including face painting, bubble blowing, stilt walking, hookey and much more. The Deni Ute Muster wouldn’t be complete without the carnival corner. Crowd favourites including dodgem cars, a Ferris wheel and fast paced rides for the adrenaline junkies will be returning this year. Matt Mingay,

Australia’s number one stunt rider and extreme sports athlete, along with his son Madzy Evel, will be making their Muster debut entertaining crowds with their off road show. Other new attractions for the 19th birthday weekend include the reptile awareness display and miniature pig racing. Sure to be a crowd highlight, these incredible trained miniature pigs race through obstacles to get to the milk trough. Deni Ute Muster general manager Vicky Lowry said a huge party was expected for 2017. “We are excited to be celebrating Lee Kernaghan’s 25th anniversary and what makes this celebration even more special is the fact that Lee performed and was part of our first Ute Muster back in 1999,” she said. “I look forward to welcoming everyone to this year’s Deni Ute Muster to celebrate Australia’s largest party on the plains.” For more information and tickets visit www. deniutemuster.com.au

SIGNATURE SAYS IT ALL ST ANNE’S Vineyard is the signature wine producer of the Echuca-Moama region — with its Perricoota vineyards and Port of Echuca cellar door. Steeped in a rich history the St Anne’s Vineyard prides itself on the quality and range of wine it produces — from dry to sweet, red and white and sparkling. Visitors can step back in time at the Port cellar door, surrounded by paddlesteamers, the long and colourful history of the port itself, with horse and carriage replacing cars, and the original carriage builder’s workshop which is today home to heritage barrels holding 3000 litres of old St Anne’s port. From there the winery is just a short drive across the river to Moama where its commitment to the sustainable is showcased in the beautiful and relaxed environment of its rammed-earth cellar. Chief executive Richard McLean said St Anne’s started planting in the Echuca-Moama region in the early 1990s, with the winery, which processes about four million litres annually, was completed in 1999. “We grow the vast majority of our grapes on our 600 acres of vineyards but we do work with a small group of good growers in Victoria and NSW,” Richard said. St Anne’s stretches into the Heathcote, Bendigo and Port Phillip wine regions and Richard said their simple philosophy of superior vineyard 68

management, combined with their winemaking skills, has been the cornerstone of their progress. The winery recently was awarded Best Cabernet in Show at the Heathcote Wine Show for its Tatalia 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. In a demonstration of the winery’s depth and reputation, every wine it entered in this prestigious event came home with at least one medal. Recent developments in the business include a dynamic expansion into the Chinese market and as a result St Anne’s is a regular exporter to the world’s biggest market — a market with a seemingly insatiable appetite for wine. “We had a wine launch in Shanghai with 1000 people in attendance. It was a very successful event and we are expecting this market to increase for us in the future.” The winery is located at Twenty Four Lane in Moama and is open from Monday to Friday 9 am – 5 pm. The port cellar is at 53 Murray Esplanade, Echuca, and is open Monday to Saturday from 9 am – 5 pm and Sunday 10 am – 5 pm. St Anne’s has also branched out into chocolate and coffee and they can be tasted at Echuca Chocolate Company and Echuca Coffee Roasters.
