66 TASTE GUIDE
Autumn is a lovely season. It’s a great time in EchucaMoama as we put the hectic pace of summer behind us, settle into the cooler weather, light the fire and throw on a jumper. A change of season brings a raft of new events for us all to enjoy. If you like a bit of activity in your life head out to Cohuna for the annual Bridge to Bridge swimming, riding, running and kayaking spectacular all in aid of a great cause, the Cohuna Hospital. If you love a spot of fishing, Echuca United is kicking off March with a fishing competition at Morning Glory River Resort. With thousands of dollars in prizes up for grabs including a new boat, it is well worth checking out their Facebook page to get in on the action. A change of date for the Echuca Cup to March gets the heart pumping and the crowd roaring that little bit earlier this year and because nobody does racing quite like Echuca, the day is sure to be a great fun filled day, whether you are with family or friends. The $80,000 Moama Bowling Club Cup is sure to entice a great racing field. To keep the adrenaline pumping Kyabram has their rodeo which has history of being one of the longest
running rodeo events in the country. Flavours Festival is always a big hit and this year with a few new initiatives in place, 2018 looks set to be bigger and better than ever. There is of course all the usual great local produce, food, wine and entertainment but this year there is also a special chance to share a meal and chat with a producer. If you like to continue with a sedate pace and love a good bit of theatre, the Echuca Moama Theatre Company is going all out this year and bringing Phantom of the Opera to the stage — Phantom is recognised around the world for its dramatic storyline and stunning music — tickets are available from the Paramount Theatre. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity. Then there is of course a range of other events including the Steam Rally, Easter in Echuca, Lockington Tractor Rally, the Wedding Expo and the Rochester Fine Art Festival. The warm weather may be starting to disappear but there is no reason to stay inside — there are plenty of great things on in EchucaMoama, get out and about and check them all out, I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

THE FLAVOUR’S SO GOOD YOU CAN ALREADY TASTE IT Sunday, May 20
FOR the past few years the Flavours Festival has been tantalising our taste buds as it showcases the finest tastes and experiences our region has to offer. Held within the relaxed atmosphere of Morrison’s Winery, Flavours is a family friendly event that focuses on delicious food and wine, made by our many talented local food producers. 8
And a new initiative this year will see a limited number of ‘Meet the Makers — VIP’ tickets go on sale. In an exclusive VIP setting ticket holders will have the opportunity to enjoy a beautifully planned sit-down lunch showcasing some of our favourite producers, chefs and wine makers — a local producer and wine maker will also bring the experience to life, talking about their own business. Organiser Jacqui Wegener said it

wouldn’t be a true taste of Echuca-Moama without including an experience on board one of our historic paddlesteamers. “Murray River Paddlesteamers will be adding this important ingredient, shuttling festival goers to and from Morrison’s and The Port of Echuca,” Jacqui said. “Travel times will need to be booked when purchasing Flavours tickets,” she added. Jacqui said there will continue to be updates to the program as the event draws closer. “Stay tuned to our Facebook and Instagram pages promoting Flavours of Echuca Moama events happening around town throughout the month of May, including the culinary feast at Junction on the eve of the Grazing Festival at Morrison’s Winery. “Bookings for this are direct through Junction | Moama Bowling Club.” To keep up to date Facebook Flavours of Echuca-Moama.

EASTER RABBIT AND EASTER RACQUET AT ECHUCA March 30 - April 2 THE tradition of chocolate and tennis will continue this year with Echuca Lawn Tennis Club’s annual Easter Tournament to be held Friday, March 30 through to Monday, April 2. Club spokesperson Amy Gledhill said this will be the 90th tournament to be hosted by the club and it was expecting 2018 to be just as successful as the other 89. With a mixture of singles, doubles and mixed events played across all levels, the tournament is an annual fixture on the calendar of participating families around the region, the state and the country. “We will again be hosting 37 events, last year we had 569 players, 792 entries and 744 matches played over four days,” Amy said. Over the years, the tournament has evolved
into a family-oriented long weekend of tennis, with many participants spending Easter at the nearby caravan park where they can freely wander to and from, between sets. The grandparents who used to play are now taking on the role of babysitter as the next generation continues the tennis tradition. This is the second year entries are available online at the Tennis Australia tournaments’ website. For more information contact ELTC on 5482 1496 or general enquiries to Ian Sinnett on 5482 5171.

THE PHENOMENON THAT IS THE PHANTOM
May 25 - June 9
ECHUCA-Moama Theatre Company’s production of The Phantom of the Opera is set to become a major drawcard for the region; attracting a talent pool from across north central Victoria. Co-directors John Wright and Mark Thomson are looking forward to creating a truly regional engagement in what is being billed as a “very special, inclusive and iconic musical event”. Mr Wright said he had not seen this level of drive in a show before. “If it all goes well over the next three to four months, I really believe it will be a performance and experience that patrons are going to absolutely adore,” he said. And with 12 performances scheduled instead of the usual eight, Mr Wright said it was extremely important to have strong audience engagement. “Like in anything, we take risks and we’ve really made a commitment here. It’s not silly, it’s measured but we really do need the 20
community’s support,” he said. “We need our people to come along, to get their feet on the ground and watch this fabulous show because that’s what’s really going to make it work in the end. “I know that the work is going in, I know the preparation in terms of the show, the theatre, the sound, lighting we’ve not had before, sound we’ve not had before, costumes we’ve not had before sets and props we’ve got from the best amateur theatre companies in Melbourne, so we’ve gone the extra yard to get all those components together and all those little bits will add up to something.” The Paramount has agreed to let EMTC bump into the theatre three weeks before the show opens.
WHAT'S ON Autumn 2018
“We’re doing some work on the face of the theatre and internally at the stage entrance and we’ll transform it into the 1890s,” he said. “I won’t give it away but I think audiences are going to love it. The whole ambience of the French opera theatre is going to
be re-created. “That’s why it’s an icon. It’s why it’s the zenith of musical theatre.” The Phantom of the Opera will take to the stage at the Paramount from May 25 to June 9 and tickets are available at the Paramount.
SWIM, RUN, RIDE, KAYAK – AND CONTRIBUTE Sunday, March 4
A FUNDRAISING initiative for the Cohuna Hospital, which began as a bit of a bet between mates, is celebrating its 25th year this year. The Cohuna Bridge to Bridge began with a swim from Daltons Bridge to the town bridge but over the years it has grown to encompass a range of activities, including swimming, kayaking, running and cycling. Along the way it has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Cohuna Hospital. The event provides a great opportunity for families looking to enjoy a Sunday morning out with their kids or for the more serious athlete, a chance to push and compete in a couple of events. In 2018 the event list includes an 8 km swim or relay swim, 1.2 km swim, 6.5 km run/walk, 25 km and 50 km bike rides, 6.5 km junior bike ride, 8.5 km paddle and 18 km kayak. The swim is assisted by the current and is a wetsuit friendly event. The run starts at Daltons
Bridge, with competitors transported to the start line via bus. The 24 km looped bike course starts at Cohuna and travels out to Burke’s Bridge — the 50 km event consists of two loops. The 18 km kayak starts from the Major Mitchell Wayside Stop and the 8.5 km canoe from Gordon boat ramp. The Bridge to Bridge challenge is a team entry event and includes a 1.2 km swim, 25 km ride and 6.5 km run — times for each event are combined to create an aggregate time ( just ensure everyone nominates the same team on the entry form.) This year’s event will be held on Sunday, March 4. Polo shirts and singlets are available for purchase. For more information visit www.bridgetobridge. org.au or email cohunabridge2bridge@ gmail.com

IT’S WORTH GETTING STEAMED UP ABOUT June 9 - 10
IF YOU are looking for a little entertainment — and a little bit of a history lesson — this Queen’s birthday long weekend, why not head out to the 55th Steam Rally Echuca Moama at Rotary Park. Steam engines, vintage and classic cars, old motorcycles, engines and wagons will be on show for the two day rally, which always draws a large crowd. Event organiser Julie Lomas said the rally was one of the region’s longest running major events, with more than 500 exhibitors, making it something to not
to be missed. This year there is an emphasis on the working steam and vintage engines and an added bonus for 2018, there will be a working tractor demonstration. Saturday will see the Clan Macleod Pipe Band lead the grand parade, followed by the steam rally beneficiary, steam engine >>

Crowd favourite ‘burning down the dunny’ will light up around 2 pm and luckily the Fire Museum of Victoria’s famous steamer will be on hand to put out any spot fires. The committee is also looking at adding entertainment to the
children’s precinct alongside the usual activities of the miniature railway, pony rides and jumping castle. Live music will also feature throughout the weekend. The Steam Rally committee’s major beneficiary this year is Echuca Regional Health’s proposed cancer and wellness centre. Gates open June 9 and 10 from 9 am to 4.30 pm daily.

HOP INTO ECHUCA-MOAMA — WHERE CHOCOLATE IS AN OPPORTUNITY March 30 - April 2
THERE is so much to do during Easter in the twin towns and our surrounding districts.
Elmore children go nuts for Easter eggs.
Great weather and familyfriendly events make it the perfect place to spend a few days or a few weeks of your holiday time. Easter Sunday the port area comes alive with a twilight market, starting around 4 pm. While details are still to be confirmed at the time of print, entertainment will also include a sail past, fireworks, barbecue and bar on the Echuca Wharf and the PS Adelaide, the oldest working paddlesteamer in the world, will be taking passengers on board. If the littlies are looking for a little fun, LJ Hooker will be hosting its annual Easter Egg Hunt Friday, March 30, with details to be advised. If you don’t mind a bit of travel why not head over to Rushworth for their annual two-day Easter >>

Saturday’s parade includes horses, vintage vehicles, steam traction engines, CFA and foot entries. Sunday’s event is held at Moora and consists of the Moora Working Draft Horse Muster — with working horse displays, ploughing, winnowing and associated crafts blacksmithing, lacemaking shearing, music and food. For more information visit www. rushwortheasterfestival. org.au There is, of course, the opportunity to participate in all the normal activities during the Easter break, including fishing, boating, eating out at one of the
many great wineries, restaurants, pubs and/ or cafes, walking the port area or just gazing at the river as the day rolls by. There is an abundance of children’s activities on hand for the adventurous or not so adventurous. There is some high adrenaline jumping action at Gravity Shack, a swim in the pool at the YMCA or the opportunity to play in the newly constructed children’s adventure park in Hopwood Garden. There is Aqua Land, Squiggles, miniature train rides and Billabong Ranch. If you are after a more sedate pace, kids can spend hours getting themselves lost in the fascinating world of science at twistED. So make sure you get out and check out the great things we have on offer in Echuca-Moama. Rikki-Lee Makeham and the Easter Bunny.

TREK DOWN TO LOCKINGTON’S TRACTOR WEEKEND If it has a motor or is machinery related, chances are you will find it at the annual Lockington and District Living Heritage Complex Annual Tractor Rally. The event is held across the weekend April 21–22 and features everything from little engines to caravans, farm implements, cars, buses, trucks and motorbikes. Organiser Joe Chappel said it is a great weekend. “We generally have a large selection of tractors and farm implements, which always generates a lot of interest, along with many other motors and machinery,” Joe said. The event began as a way to connect the public with bygone days and it has grown in popularity through the years — 2018 will be the 21st continuous running of the event. “It started out as a way to show people how things used to be done and how people used to live back in the early days,” Joe said. “It is always a big weekend and we usually

WE’RE GOIN’ TO THE CHAPEL AND WE’RE GONNA GET MARRIED
Sunday, May 27
THEY say your wedding day is meant to be one of the most important days of your life. So why not get it right from the start and attend the Echuca-Moama Wedding Expo, Sunday, May 27. Echuca-Moama is one of the most popular wedding destinations in regional Victoria so it is fitting it has an expo to complement that reputation. And this year the committee is offering one lucky couple in attendance the chance to win their own wedding through the “Win a Winter Wedding” promotion. 48
Valued at $15,000 the package includes the venue for the ceremony and reception for three days from major sponsor Tindarra Resort. The prize includes a basic beverage package and Two Tarts catering will provide a food package for 40 guests to be used in the winter of 2019 (June, July or August — exact dates subject to availability). Other businesses, including Etain Celebrant and Tracy’s Cakes, will supply services to

complete the package, but the winner must be present at the expo to claim the prize, which will be drawn immediately after the fashion parade. For full terms and conditions please refer to the website. The expo is home to approximately 75 exhibitors and there isn’t a detail that is missed, from gowns and suits to cake makers and event stylists, hairdressers and makeup artists to entertainment and florists, photographers
and videographers. Without forgetting venues and wedding transport. A highlight of each expo has been the fashion parade, which gets underway at 1.30 pm. Doors open from 10 am to 3.30 pm, entry is $15 for adults and children under 14 are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door or be prepurchased online. www.echucamoama weddingexpo.com.au

COUNTDOWN BEGINS TO ECHUCA CUP
Sunday, March 11
A CHANGE of date for the Echuca Cup to Sunday, March 11 just made the Labour Day long weekend that little bit more exciting for the Echuca-Moama region. The event is a great, fun filled day which features all the usual race day fun and the $80,000 Moama Bowling Club Echuca Cup. Club chief executive Leigh Newton said the club and our many stakeholders are all delighted with the return to an autumn event, its traditional home. “We all agree this date is the best placement for the future of the cup and we are grateful to be able to return it to its old date, both this season and for years to come,” Leigh said. Along with a great day of racing, the event also offers live music, giant waterslide, jumping castle, face painting, pony rides, bucking bull and promotions throughout the day. This year, the Riverine Herald’s Bella magazine is offering racegoers the
chance to win a weekend getaway at Tindarra Resort for you and five friends just by getting photographed in the Bella Booth between 1 pm and 2 pm — images will be shared online and follow Bella Facebook for voting details. Free buses will be running throughout the day, picking up and dropping off at locations in Echuca and Moama. General admission costs are adults $20 and concession $10. Children 17 and under are free if accompanied by an adult. There is a range of admission packages available including general admission, winning post enclosure tickets, umbrella and mini-marquee packages — or enjoy The Pavilion cocktail party. Catering and beverage packages are available, or
simply enjoy the spacious lawns and a great day out with family and friends. Echuca Racing Club membership is available for $85 or member and guest for $115 will get you access to the members only area within The Pavilion on Echuca Cup Day but is also still great value with four weekend meetings still to be run for the 2017–18 season. For more information or to book, go to country. racing.com/echuca or call 5482 2487.

ART SHOW A FINE TIME TO BE IN ROCHESTER April 25-29
ROCHESTER’S Fine Art Exhibition is back for 2018 in a colourful and interesting celebration of all things artistic.
The biennial event showcases a diverse range of mediums including glass, bronze and paintings from artists here and interstate. This year’s featured artist is Pete Conroy. Event co-ordinator Judy Anderson said 2018 would be a high class, high quality exhibition. “The event is curated by Penny Silver and she always manages to find a diverse and interesting group of artists,” Judy said. “This is our sixth event and they are only getting
better and better,” she said. The event kicks off on Wednesday, April 25 at the Rochester Shire Hall from 7.30 pm. Doctor Susan McMinn will get the proceedings underway and comedian Monica Dullard is making a return to entertain the crowd. The exhibition is open to the public from April 26 to April 29 from 10 am – 5 pm. Devonshire teas will also be available during the exhibition. The Friday night will see an art auction at
Rochester Wine Tavern with guest chef Daniel Spizzica cooking up a gourmet multicourse Greek dinner — numbers are limited and bookings are essential. The event is held in support of REDHS. For more information visit www.redhs.com.au and follow the art exhibition link to book through Trybooking. MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR NEXT WALK AND FOLLOW SOME HISTORIC STEPS LEARNING the history behind some of Echuca’s historical buildings has been made easier by the addition of 11 new sites on the Heritage Walk Echuca brochure. The walk is a self-paced stroll around the buildings of the town and each of the 89 sites has been researched by Echuca’s own historical society members. The 1870s were the peak years of the steamer trade at Echuca and wool was the lifeblood of the port. Increased activity during this time was the catalyst for a building spike which saw many of the single storey shops erected 10
58
years earlier replaced by the many impressive two storey buildings we see in High St today. The opening of the iron bridge in 1878 and a decline in river trade led to the consolidation of Echuca’s commercial centre in Hare St — with shops moving south towards the railway station. During the 1960s the High St area was in decline but a rejuvenation project which began in the 1970s
WHAT'S ON Autumn 2018
started. The filming of All the Rivers Run in the 1980s revitalised the area and put Echuca back on the map. Some of the sites of interest include the Baptist Church, Chinese Society and Hornes Garage, the former Echuca Post Office, Dr Crossen’s surgery, Steampacket Hotel, Hopwood’s Garden, the site of Echuca’s water towers, dock site and wharf extensions.
A brochure is available from the Visitor Information Centre or Echuca Historical Society Museum. April and May are National Trust history months and the society is celebrating goldfields architect William Vahland and his life’s work. A number of Echuca’s finest buildings were Vahland designed and built including the former town hall, the former courthouse,
the former Bank of NSW and even the Riverine Herald office. The society will be hosting free guided walks showcasing these sites during the two months and a booklet celebrating Vahland’s life is for sale from the Echuca Historical Society. For more information contact EHS at 1 Dickson St, Echuca, or phone 5480 1325. It is open daily from 11 am – 3 pm.

WHAT'S ON Autumn 2018
George MacFloyd Blues Band perform at the Shamrock Hotel during last year’s festival.
IF YOU are looking for a great way to spend a weekend in July, look no further than the Winter Blues Festival. Some of the country’s best blues musicians will flood the Port Of Echuca heritage precinct and surrounding
venues from July 26–29. More than 50 performers from across the country make their way to the twin towns to share their love of a musical genre that originated with African Americans in the deep south of the US around the end of the 19th century.
The Associates performed at last year’s festival.
The festival is a major attraction on the EchucaMoama calendar and draws crowds of around 20,000. The carefree and easy vibe that spills out of the venues and into the streets is one of the many reasons why people return year after year.
As the event is extremely popular, the committee urges anyone interested to get on board and book accommodation as soon as possible. The festival line-up is released in May and for more information visit winterblues.com.au
