90 TASTE GUIDE

IN SO many ways autumn can be seen as the best time of all to visit the twin towns and their surrounds both sides of the river. And with What’s On, in the new pocket size version, as the ideal companion for everything available to you. And there is so much happening right now we hope you have allocated enough time. Highlights include the Echuca Cup at Echuca Racecourse and harness racing’s Easter meeting is one of its biggest for the year. Both include plenty to keep the youngsters entertained while you are busy picking a winner or two. Echuca United Football Netball club will be staging its annual fishing competition and

you could sail away, literally, with the major prize for the best catch — it’s a boat. Speaking of Easter there’s always plenty happening but one of the most popular events is the annual Easter egg hunt on the 208 Primary School oval. There are sections for all ages and what you find you keep. It’s an absolute must. You could try the steam rally or the tractor rally. But if hi‑octane is more your thing there is also the rodeo. The twin towns (and surrounds) are open for business and waiting for you to arrive.

ALVIN Cooper is no regular 13-year-old. For a start, the Mathoura teenager has been named his town’s Australia Day Young Sportsperson of the Year. Alvin’s long list of sporting achievements in the past 12 months have come from the swimming pool, the athletics track, and the footy oval – and all for local clubs. He also represented his region in Sydney twice in 2018, for the national swimming carnival and the national athletics meet. Even better he is following in the footsteps of his younger sister, who won the award two years ago. “In a way I’m following in her footsteps. We’re quite competitive about that,” Alvin said. “I used to play for Deniliquin in soccer before moving across to footy with Mathoura (in 2018). I had some mates there at the club.” In his first year moving from the soccer pitch to the footy oval with the Mathoura under-14s, Alvin was awarded runner-up best and fairest. “I was pretty happy just to be nominated for this, and my family were jumping up and down and were celebrating,” Alvin said. “We’re just super proud of him and what he’s achieved — it’s awesome,” his mother Jenny said. “You see these big city kids representing the likes of Sydney and Melbourne, and these kids from the bush like Alvin rock up, plonk down their bag and just get into it — it’s great.”

THAT WAS NO T-REX, THAT WAS A TOBY Toby the T-Rex hit Rich River Golf Club Resort last week and was a screaming success. See Wednesday’s Riv for all the excitement.

FORGET THE SPOON – THIS IS AN EGG HUNT YOUR Easter activities are set thanks to LJ Hooker teaming up with 208 Primary School for their annual Easter Egg Hunt. More than 1000 youngsters enjoy an extra special treat on Good Friday and collect thousands of eggs alongside the Easter Bunny and Mr Hooker Bear. One of the most popular Easter events in the twin towns has the goal in 2019 to exceed the excellent $1629.25 raised in 2018. Participation is $5 per child — with collection bags supplied.

There will also be raffle tickets on sale for huge Easter egg hampers. Tickets are just $2 each — or three for $5 — with the winner drawn at the event. The day starts at 10 am and all proceeds will go to the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal. It also kicks off a raft of events on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday (see stories elsewhere in this issue of What’s On). WHAT’S ON Autumn 2019

March 10

THE Moama Bowling Club Echuca Cup has seen its prize money leap from $80 000 to $100 000 this year, ensuring a big field of quality Thoroughbreds. Set for the long weekend in March — the cup will be run on Sunday, March 10 — it is expected to pull a big crowd to one of the club’s two biggest days each year (the other is its Melbourne Cup Day races). Echuca Racing Club chief executive Leigh Newton said the boost in prize money was a major coup for Echuca-Moama and had been attracting a lot of interest from the bigger stables. Newton said the club had planned an expanded presentation for the day, including new highlights such as the Hats and High Tea marquee for the ladies, with fashion parades, prizes, giveaways, champagne on arrival and a great afternoon ahead. “We are also lucky to have secured retired superstar horse Apache Cat — an eight-time Group One winner and

specialist over 1400 m — the same length as our cup, for the day,” Newton added. “He is one of the most immediately recognisable horses since the mighty grey Gunsynd because of his grey/white face and socks on all four legs — it will be a real buzz to see him parade on our track,” he said. “We also have a few new dining products available as well as the High Tea marquee, and they are already selling fast. “That includes the Home Straight Marquee — a syndicated large marquee which offers a sit down, three-course meal and beverages.” Newton said he planned another big crowd puller to be the arrival of SEN’s Off the Bench show to host the Carlton Draught Winning Post Enclosure. He said Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney and Cameron Luke will be headlining the Bench on the day. This package includes lunch and beverages as well as live music “What’s really exciting is the SEN Sunday Brunch radio show will be broadcasting live from the track as >>

>> part of an outdoor broadcast hookup,” Newton said. “They will be on air nationally from 11 am until 1 pm — that’s some pretty impressive reach for us on such a big day on our calendar,” he said. “We also have a big screen to broadcast the races, full TAB facilities and a betting ring and free buses to shuttle people from town to the track and back (pick up locations are Moama Bowling Club, the Border Inn, Star Bar, The Caledonian and The American hotels).” Newton said the younger visitors have not been forgotten, with plenty of supervised activities to keep them happy during the day. He said that means a giant water slide, jumping castles and games. “There will also be live music throughout the day and people can still book an umbrella or mini marquee package or simply enjoy our lawns and facilities for a great day out with family and friends.”

EAGLES HAVE LANDED – some big fish

Echuca United Football Netball Club’s fishing classic, launched last year, is back for another weekend of wet lines and fantastic prizes and a fun schedule even if fishing isn’t your thing THE Echuca United Fishing Classic is returning to waters near you for a second drop of the line after a successful 2018 competition. With competitions for all age groups and abilities, lines will be cast from 7 am till 5 pm on March 16, then 7 am – 11 am the next day in the waters around the Morning Glory River Resort in Moama.

28 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2019

The weekend kicks off on Friday, March 15, with live entertainment, raffles and giveaways throughout the evening, starting at 6 pm. The Classic will also see a fully-stocked bar and food at the ready for purchase for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the Saturday. On competition days, fishing can be done by boat or simply by standing on the bank and enjoying the serenity. But if fishing doesn’t float your boat, never fear. There will be loads of activities and entertainment available for those who don’t wish to compete in the fishing competition. Live entertainment will begin from 8 pm on the Friday night. For those of you who simply want to do nothing but soak in the atmosphere, that’s fine too! Grab a few friends, come and join us at the second Echuca United Fishing Classic. There is a vast array of prizes to be won, and are yet to be decided, but will be worth thousands of dollars. The Morning Glory Resort can be found on Gilmour Rd, Moama.

It’s a first for LOCKY TRACTOR – and for RALLY participants Engines primed and at the ready, this year’s Lockington and District Living Heritage Complex Annual Tractor Rally promises the staples — and then some. In its 22nd year, the event features working vintage tractors, stationary engines, steam engines, trucks, motorcycles, cars and farm machinery over the weekend of April 27–28. As well as the various displays, across the road the Lockington heritage complex will be open for everyone to explore. Organiser Joe Chappel said the event proves to be a great weekend for the crowds that flock to the region. “We’re expecting around about 1000 people — it’s hard to estimate from year to year, but we’re hoping for somewhere around that,” he said. “There’ll be a number of tractors, memorabilia and we’re anticipating doing something to celebrate International’s 80 years in Australia.

“We’ve never done anything like this before and so we don’t quite know exactly what it will entail.” Despite the finer details of the celebration to be confirmed, Mr Chappel said there has been considerable interest in the milestone. The event runs from daylight to dusk over the two days and includes on-site catering all day, as well as a Saturday night meal for a small cost. But one of the many highlights of the event would have to be the staple to come out of a country kitchen — the Sunday roast. Entry for exhibitors is free; $5 for the general public and school age children are free. Dogs are welcome, however must be on a leash at all times. WHAT’S ON Autumn 2019 33

It’s a signature event in the twin towns. Free music everywhere you turn as bands and soloists converge on Echuca-Moama for four days of celebration every July THE Echuca-Moama Winter Blues Festival is one of Echuca-Moama’s best cultural events. This year will mark the 20th anniversary of the music festival and, as always, it looks set to be an unmissable event. Held from July 25 – 28 Winter Blues brings some of the best blues artists from around the country into the twin towns for four days of performing across multiple venues in town. Organiser Peter Williams said he could not be more excited for the festival. “The best venues in Echuca-Moama provide blues entertainment with the perfect backdrop of the old port of Echuca,” Mr Williams said. “You can easily walk from venue to venue to see your favourite artists — and best of all, it’s all free,” he added. The festival is organised and run on a shoestring budget and a volunteer committee with venues throughout the towns putting up the money to host artists, allowing them to make a profit from attendances at shows. More than 60 blues and roots performers are expected to play to crowds approaching 20,000 and it’s guaranteed there will be a style and a show for everyone’s taste. The full program will be announced closer to the event. More information is available at winterblues.com.au For those travelling to town for the event, book your accommodation early as this weekend is a sell-out. Echuca-Moama has established itself as the place to be for heart-starting blues and roots music and the perfect antidote for a bad case of the winter blues with its annual Winter Blues Festival. The country’s best blues musicians will fill the historic Port of Echuca’s heritage precinct and surrounding venues. WHAT’S ON Autumn 2019 39

TENNIS TOURNAMENT WITH THE LOT AT ECHUCA LAWN It’s a setting more appealing than the concrete canyons of big city sports stadiums. At Easter you get quality tennis on a proper surface — and you get Echuca-Moama and the Murray. Top that if you can ECHUCA LAWN is once again playing host to one of the biggest tennis tournaments the region has to offer. The annual Echuca Lawn Tennis Club Easter Tournament, to be held from April 19 – 22, is expected to attract around 700 entrants from all over Victoria and NSW. The four day tournament will see men’s and women’s singles, as well as doubles and mixed doubles, with more than $4000 spent on prizes and trophies. Lawn’s annual Easter tournament is second only in size in the region to Shepparton’s tournament, held at the same time. But Lawn president Brian Gledhill was confident Shepparton’s tournament won’t detract from their own — and vice versa. “Our competition is certainly one of the bigger ones around here; Shepparton has one too, but there are a lot of entrants for both and they don’t necessarily compete in that respect,” he said. “Players come from all over really, as well as a few locals, but the open and upper grade players tend to come from Melbourne and further afield. “Lawn courts are a rare thing these days so they’re quite keen to come up and have a holiday over Easter at the same time.” >> 42 WHAT’S ON Autumn 2019

>> But it may be the club’s last big tournament for a while, Gledhill said, as the club will lose some courts due to the ongoing bridge project. “We will lose our six courts down the bottom (bringing the total number of courts from 17 to 11),” he said. “But nevertheless it will be a good tournament. We’ve only just advertised it on Facebook and there is already interest. “We generally have about 700 entries, but because it’s such a late Easter we might have to cut that back a bit this year, we’ll just have to wait and see. “The singles knockouts will be held on Friday, the doubles on Saturday, and the mixed on Sunday, with all finals on the Monday.” 44 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2019

Echuca Historical Society has gone all out to display the history of generations of young women stepping out for the traditional milestone event of coming out as debutantes and belles of the ball TO BE the belle of the ball was the dream of generations of young women in Echuca-Moama. A dazzling tradition carried on today by the debutante balls. Now Echuca Historical Society is staging an exhibition of 200 years of these rites of passage. EHS president Dot Hammond said they have targeted 1800–2000 to feature a collection of belle and deb gowns and photographs from the twin towns and around the region. “We are planning to run the exhibition from March until the end of May in 2019,” Dot said. “While our society does have many photographs — and some gowns — we have been appealing to the wider community for photographs and dresses and are delighted to report there has been a good response,” she said. “If anyone still has their deb dress or a sash we would still love to borrow it before the exhibition opens. “However, please don’t suddenly rush the museum, if you would take a photo of your gown or photos and email it to us at the address below we will be able to make sure we don’t double up and get the best possible selection. “We didn’t want too many from one era and not enough or, heaven forbid, none from some other periods.” Dot said looking through the collection was an eye-opener for everyone, discovering there were so many different clubs presenting debs. She said members were amazed at the diversity, including groups such as the Bachelors Club and footy clubs, just to name a couple. You can contact the museum at eh.soc@bigpond.com or phone Margaret Hart on 0419 506 254. >> 48 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2019

A CULTURAL SHOWCASE FROM THE FIRST AUSTRALIANS Built on one of earth’s oldest cultures, the Koori arts and craft market embraces the richness of indigenous tradition and combines it with life in the twin towns circa 2019 THE rich beauty of Aboriginal culture will be on full display at the upcoming Koori arts and craft market. In its eighth year, the market — organised by Njernda Aboriginal Corporation — will feature 20 stalls showcasing the creativity of local Aboriginal artists. The market will feature a welcome to country, smoking ceremony; kids in dance performance, an art competition, didgeridoo playoff and live music from songbird Maddy Colville. 58 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2019

And for the children there will be face painting and a 20 m giant lizard inflatable. Organiser Kelli Bartlett said the event was a vital opportunity for people of indigenous and non-indigenous backgrounds to gather in a positive space. “For Aboriginal Australians, art expresses all aspects of life and identity and is a key path for passing on culture to future generations,” she said. >>

WHAT’S ON Autumn 2019 59

>> “The Koori Arts and Craft market provides an accessible avenue for local Aboriginal artists to revive and share their culture with the wider community.” And for all those adventurous foodies out there, a barbecue complete with emu, crocodile and kangaroo sausages will be on offer. In addition to a spread of crafts including headpieces, bags, shoes and handmade baskets, a wide range of paintings from local artists will also be featured. “Our work is all localised, so many artists incorporate the lines of the Murray River or our traditional meeting places,” Kelli said. “Each painting tells a story.” The market will be held in Hopwood Gardens on Saturday, April 20 (Easter Saturday) from 9 am to 3 pm. Held at Rotary Park on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, the popular event is set to go above and beyond previous years. There’ll still be the old favourites — the steam engines, vintage and classic cars, old motorcycles, engines and wagons which always draw crowds to the two-day rally. But organisers Geoff Tighe, Ray Clayton and Greg Hansford said it was time to give the annual highlight a “bit of a jazz-up”. “We really want to promote the event for kids this year, so there will be an animal farm and mini rail trips, among other attractions,” Mr Tighe said. “We also want to get around to schools in the district with a steam engine before the rally and encourage the kids to take part in a painting competition. If they enter, they’ll be given free entry to the rally. “Young local talents can also take part in a singing competition on the weekend.” But Mr Tighe said there would still be a lot to keep the grown-ups occupied. “There will be more live music this year and a greater range of gourmet food and beverages than ever before,” he said. “We want it to be a food and wine festival type of event.” 62 WHAT’S ON Autumn 2019

The weekend will also feature daily parades with the Clan Macleod Pipe Band, steam engines, rollers, tractors, cars, trucks, horse drawn implements and a log buggy show taking to the arenas. ‘Chainsaw chick’ Angie Polglaze will return to carve up a storm and there will also be blacksmithing, camp cooking and hay-baling among the trades of yesteryear on show. Plus the annual crowd favourite ‘burning down the dunny’ will be lit up on Sunday, with the Fire Museum of Victoria’s famous steamer on hand to put out any spot fires. Mr Tighe said he hoped this year’s event would attract even larger

crowds — both from out of town and right here in Echuca-Moama. “Last year showed only a small percentage of the crowds were local so this year we hope to attract people right on our doorstep,” he said. “This event uses a whole lot of community volunteers and proceeds are then ploughed back into the community. So it would be amazing to see even more local support.” Gates open June 8 and 9 from 9 am to 4.30 pm daily.

“This is a fun show with some big musical numbers that the audience won’t expect,” he said. “While there’s no sunny dispositions in the cast, there’s a lot of laughs and great music.” Mr Westley said Addams was one of the company’s most progressed shows, which meant there was plenty of time to polish. “But also add in big dance numbers and the little things that make this show special,” he said. “We have brought in magicians to teach the magic tricks we’ll use and linguists to help our cast with their accents.” The Addams Family musical is based on the original story of a night when Wednesday’s new normal boyfriend comes to dinner, along with his parents.

The 26-strong cast have come from as far as Bendigo, Kyabram and Rochester, as well as Echuca-Moama. “Ninety-five per cent of this show is completely made and developed in EchucaMoama,” Mr Westley said. “The set is awesome and most of the costumes in this show will be handmade by our wardrobe manager Jaspa Frankish and her team, including EMTC treasure Jean Pedretti.” Mr Westley said he could not be prouder of the cast who were working their backsides off — literally and figuratively. “Not only are they well progressed with the show, the cast have introduced a fitness challenge and we’re all working hard to be as lean and as fit as possible, come opening night,” he said. “We are like one big family and the support and work ethic every member of the cast and crew brings is something truly special to witness. “This show is going to be big and I can’t wait for the people of northern Victoria to see it.” Tickets are on sale at the Paramount. The Addams Family will be held at the Paramount from May 24 to June 1, 2019.

GET READY FOR A WILD RIDE Nothing says wild country night out more than rodeo and few say it with the experience of Kyabram, one of the oldest rodeos in the country and it is getting revved up for its 74th successive event >>

March 8

>> KYABRAM’S rodeo is one of the oldest in Australia — the third oldest to be exact — and is a great night out for the whole family. You can soak up the wild west atmosphere as riders take on bucking broncos, bucking bulls and cowboys and cowgirls as they pit their skills against the strength of some pretty big and pretty agro animals. But if the dust, dirt, bellowing and neighing — and thuds as the riders who go up inevitably are reintroduced to terra very firmer. But macho men aside, there are some spectacular skills on display here from the men and women and the barrel races and roping events are major attractions. In the ring the riders take on the bucking bulls and horses while horsemanship skills are put to the test in the Barrel Races and Team Roping events. The sideshow alley is lots of fun, featuring all of the traditional rides and games.

72 WHAT’S ON Autumn 2019

But in the arena you can check out all of the following: • Bareback bronc riding • Bull riding • Cowgirl’s barrel racing • Cowgirl’s breakaway roping • Junior bareback • Junior barrel racing • Junior bull riding • Junior steer riding • Saddle bronc riding • Steer wrestling • Team roping The Kyabram Rodeo is one of only three rodeos nationally to be inducted into the Australian Professional Rodeo Association’s (APRA) Hall of Fame late last year. It has been staged for almost 75 years and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. “We received a surprise letter from the APRA and it was just lovely,” rodeo committee secretary Janelle McDonald said. “It basically outlined the work we had done and said because of it, we had been nominated to join the Hall of Fame.” Once the initial shock wore off, Janelle took some time to think about what made the Kyabram Rodeo great. “It just comes down to a lot of hard work,” she said. “It’s a lot of hard work by a devoted committee of about 25 people who continue to put countless hours in.” The first Kyabram rodeo was held in 1946 at the Recreation Reserve — now the Wilf Cox football ground. The following year it was held at the showgrounds, at 379 Allan St, and 73 years on, it still is. “Obviously this year is number 74 for us and in 2020 we will have a big event for rodeo number 75,” Janelle added. “Our plans are always to make it bigger and better.”

March 3

>> THE Cohuna Bridge to Bridge is back like you’ve never seen it before. Scheduled for March 3, the event has been handed back to the community. Among other changes, there will be no swimming events in the 2019 edition. The local Lions Club had been running the competition for the past 20 or so years, but decided it was time to step down and leave the event for people with fresh ideas and exuberance to take over. A fresh burst of life has been injected into the event by the Cohuna Progress Association, headed up by local Kirstin Nicholson. “Previously we had a lot of water events, but in its 26th year we’ve decided to go a different way,” Nicholson said. “A whole group of us in the community wanted to get it going. So although there are no longer any water events, it gives us the chance to bring in more running events.” The event first began as a bet between locals many moons ago, which grew into something much larger as the years rolled on. “It became a massive thing over the next 25 years, with its swimming, kayaking and other water events. As well as the running and cycling events which have been added more recently,” Nicholson said. “Previously it was just the 6 km run available, but we’re adding a 12 km and half marathon (21 km) distances, starting at Daltons Bridge but detouring through the bush in the national park and finishing off at Cohuna Bridge. “The bush is right on our door step and we need to

recognise it and get more events out there.” Another addition is the ‘mini-miler’, an untimed 1.6 km run for kids. Starting at the bridge, the mini-miler trails around the pool, the tennis club and the bowling club to Gilrule Park. “We’ll have bibs with chips on them which get activated at the start and the timing will be fantastic and accurate. It’s a big improvement,” Nicholson said. “Our committee members have all been to many events around the state and are drawing on those experiences to make it a great event. “Entries are open until March 2 and the online registrations mean we can take them right up until the night before the race. This year’s funds raised will go to the Cohuna District Hospital, focusing on new dialysis machines. For information, head to the website at bridgetobridge.org.au

TROT ALONG TO THE EASTER RACES IN ECHUCA It’s one of the biggest nights in the region’s harness racing calendar and trotting legend GUS UNDERWOOD agreed to provide a sneak preview about what the public can expect when they go through the gate ECHUCA Harness Racing Club is gearing up to complete the hat-trick of its three biggest meetings for the season. The New Year’s night meeting is the iconic meeting on the club’s race calendar each year and it also hopes to build on an earlier cup meeting date in future years.

88 WHAT’S ON Autumn 2019

The Moama Bowling Echuca Pacing Cup meeting was staged on Friday night, February 8, this year to coincide with the Southern 80 ski classic which draws thousands of people to the twin towns and district for the weekend.

Echuca Harness Racing Club stalwart Norm Visca said the recent cup meeting coinciding with the Southern 80 had been only the second time it had happened and was a “still a work in progress”. But Visca believes it has tremendous potential to build on in future years. “We know we aren’t going to get everyone attending the Southern 80 to come to the trots. “But a lot probably will when they get to hear about it and we expect it to become a lot more popular when the public links the two events in future years,” Norm added. But Visca said the approaching Easter Sunday meeting on April 21 would be second only to the New Year’s night meeting for his club in terms of getting people through the turnstiles. “It’s a meeting that has been around for 20 or 30 years in this timeslot and has always been our second biggest meeting for the season. “It’s a meeting that has always drawn a big crowd, mainly because it’s on a Sunday and everyone still has a day or two or to get home if they have travelled to the area from any distance.” Norm said a competition which will be drawn at the Easter meeting is also certain to keep the meeting in the spotlight.

Peter Barber of Dinky Di Houseboats is putting up a prize for a week on one of his boats for as many as eight people. “It’s a tremendous gesture by Peter and we expect a lot of people to try and win such a valuable prize,” Visca said. He said while the on-track action on the night will be at its frenetic best there will plenty of offtrack action for those not so interested in trying to pick a winner or two but who are interested in just having a good time. “The off track entertainment will have a family theme as always and will be aimed at involving all family members. “It’s certainly a night not only the public enjoys but the club also looks forward to,” he said. The club has just one meeting — on Thursday, March 28 — before the Easter Sunday meeting. WHAT’S ON Autumn 2019 89
