62 JUST DOWN THE ROAD
Your journey doesn’t have to end at the town limits. See what some of Echuca-Moama’s surrounding areas have to offer.
Well it’s that time of the year again and who else does the Christmas and new year holiday period better than the twin towns? Summertime is a busy time in Echuca-Moama as tourists converge on the town to enjoy all that we have on offer and we certainly don’t disappoint. There is plenty of Christmas cheer around with the Epicentre Christmas Spectacular and the Moama Lions Club traditional Carols by Candlelight. New Year’s Eve revelers will have the chance to see the night in with a bang with a new family friendly event to be held at the Aquatic Reserve — featuring fireworks at 9.30 pm and again at midnight (weather permitting). The night also features some great entertainment including inflatable fun, electronic screen and whacky relay races. The night is an alcohol-free event and visitors are encouraged to BYO picnic blankets, chairs and food. This will be a great family night so get on down and support this new community initiative. There are just so many great things to do in Echuca-Moama over the

summer period. If you love live music we have the Riverboats Music Festival, if you love action we have the Southern 80, we have horse racing, triathlon and the great wharf to winery swim. If you want to get your music groove on head to Girgarre for their annual Moosic Muster — you can spend the weekend jamming with other like minded musos. Summer also means outdoor action and the river comes alive as people enjoy all it has to offer from skiing to paddle boarding, fishing and swimming. Outdoor eating is also a speciality in Echuca. Make sure you take the opportunity to dine in some of our fabulous restaurants, pubs and cafes. Christmas is a fantastic time and there is no better place to spend it then here in the fantastic town of Echuca-Moama. Merry Christmas to you all.

TRI THIS FOR THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE Saturday, January 20
12
WHAT'S ON Summer 2017–18
THERE will be no shortage of sweat as athletes push their bodies to the limit in the Echuca Moama Tri Club annual 2018 Morley Auto Group Triathlon on Saturday, January 20. The course includes a 700 m downstream swim in the Murray River, a 20 km looping bike course and a scenic 5 km riverside run. The Echuca-Moama triathlon has a reputation for being one of the most picturesque courses in Victoria which is why so many triathletes return year after year. The atmosphere is electric as spectators line the streets or converge in the garden to watch the athletes make their way around the course. The triathlon also has the added bonus of being a twilight event which makes things fun for both athlete and spectator. Club president Steve Loader said last year around 300 people tackled the event. “We have everyone compete from teenagers to the mum and dad triathlete or those looking to take their racing to the next level,” Steve said. Swimmers will kick off the event with a wave start two minutes apart — male, female and then teams. “I think we have got a pretty good mix going now and it is going to be a great weekend.” The triathlon is part of a multisport weekend which includes the Community Living and Respite 5 km River Gums twilight fun run held on the Friday night. The popular 3 km Wharf to Winery swim will be held on Sunday morning.

TWIN TOWNS ARE A HOLIDAY SMORGASBORD OF EXPERIENCES THE summer holidays in Echuca-Moama are jam-packed with many great activities for visitors to get involved in whether you are holidaying here as a family or a couple — or on your own. Of course you can’t mention the twin towns without thinking about the river and all the activities in the historic port precient. The number one stop on the tourist agenda has to be the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre. The centre is a mustsee as it transports you back to the 1860s and explores events and individuals integral to our 14
local history; including the steam display, sawmill and the magnificent historic wharf. There is of course the opportunity for a ride on one of the Murray River’s paddlesteamers or to grab something to eat at one of Echuca’s great eateries. There is also the opportunity to while away the hours wandering the diverse High St precinct. The newly-built children’s playpark in Hopwood Garden has been designed with help from local schoolchildren and has some interesting play structures including a turtle shell, fort, swings, climbing ladders and logs to run along, all encircled by an asphalt path ideal for little people’s scooters and bikes.

RODS RUN HOT IN ECHUCA-MOAMA
28
WHAT'S ON Summer 2017–18
March 16-18 HOT rods in every shape, size and colour will descend on Echuca-Moama for the Rich River Rod Run from March 16–18.
Held every two years, the run attracts more than 200 hot rods to join in the full weekend program while another 120 vehicles will participate in the public show and shine family day on Sunday. Rod Run organiser Frank Bowles said the large number of hot rods on display are an enthusiast’s delight. “From original models to custom builds there is something for every car lover’s taste,” Frank said. “A true hot rod is pre-1949 and we have a number of them taking part in the Rod Run.” A large crowd of more than 2000 will attend the family day on Sunday. Entertainment includes a rock and roll band, children’s rides, a petting zoo, face-painting, a pin-up dress competition,
trade stands and excellent catering. “We pride ourselves on providing a family-friendly hot rod event, in the local area, at a very reasonable cost. Admission to the family day is only $5 per adult, with children free.” A 2014 council event survey ranked the Rod Run as a major event in terms of the tourist benefit to the community. Rich River Rod and Custom Club enlists the support of other organisations such as the CFA, St John’s Ambulance, schools and the Search & Rescue squad to assist us with tasks such as ticket selling, car parking, first aid and providing displays. We have a loyal group of local businesses who regularly support us with sponsorship of the Rod Run.
PROGRAM SUNDAY, MARCH 18 8 am: Show and Shine gates open at Jack Eddy Oval, Moama. 8.30 am: Entrants’ breakfast served. 10 am: Show and shine begins and includes a live band, children’s entertainment, trade stands, displays and food stalls. 10 am: Ladies coffee cruise departs. 12.30 pm: Raffle draw. 1 pm: Presentations and closures.

LIBRARY HOLIDAY PROGRAM THE library is a great place to spend a bit of time during the holidays and with many free activities and workshops running through the Christmas and New Year period why not head down. Library services general manager Jenny Mustey said the summer reading club would be happening across all shire libraries, starting December 1 and running through till the end of the January holidays. The theme for the club is ‘game on’ as a lead-up to the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
“Children will be able to register their interest from December 1 at any of the branches and will receive their SRC reading log and other little incentives as they continue to read over the summer,” Ms Mustey said. “We will also have a wide range of activities during the holidays including special art workshops
courtesy of the National Gallery of Victoria,” he said. “We will have sorts of games — board, outdoor and online games available to play.” Storytime for the month of December are Fridays at 10.30 am while toddler Rhymetime is every Monday at 10.30 am. Santa story times

FORGET THE PADDLESTEAMERS AND SWIM
— FROM THE WHARF TO THE WINERY
THE wharf to winery swim is a 3 km current assisted event starting at the historic Port of Echuca Wharf and finishing downstream at Morrison’s Winery. The swim is part of a multisport festival weekend hosted by the Echuca-Moama Tri Club and kicks off at 9.30 am. After the swim there will be a fun day; including live entertainment, a children’s playground and a free barbecue lunch for participants available from 11.30 am. Presentations start at 12.30 pm. Last year’s female winner, Sunbury teenager Hollie Buerckner, knocked over
the swim in 27.48. She finished 23 seconds ahead of 2016 winner Chelsea Deason, who was the second female out of the water and fourth overall. “That’s a really good time for me,” Buerckner said. “The river was flowing really quickly this year and on some of the corners it became tricky because the current would take you out a bit and you had to work your way back,” she said. “But there wasn’t much wind and it was quite still, not choppy at all, which is good.” For those swimmers not taking the event too seriously there is a social category. Entry fees are $35 for social and $50 for the open.
Trophies and prize money is up for grabs for the open category winner and medals and gifts for second and third and social and junior winners. Family and friends looking for travel to Morrison’s can jump aboard the PS Canberra,
tickets must be purchased from swim registration on the morning. A barbecue lunch is available for $10 for adults and $5 for children. Register online at echucatriclub.com or on the day at Hopwood Gardens from 8 am.

WHAT'S ON Summer 2017–18
IT’S easy to lose a few hours at Chanter Estate Winery and Military Museum in Moama. If the beauty of the cellar door doesn’t get you, then surely the collection in the museum will. Owned and operated by Mary and Ian Ledwidge, the couple relocated the former Holy Trinity Church from Rochester in the late 1990s to Moama to act as their cellar door. Brick by brick the couple rebuilt the church and in 2001 they opened the cellar door and museum. The military museum is home to an extensive collection of memorabilia which includes cars, trucks, motorbikes, guns, medals and other historical objects including cameras, glasses, hats and helmets. All of the vehicles are in working order and Mary has researched each and every object over the years. “It amazes me but I am still learning new things today,” Mary said. “The bulk of the collection was purchased 30–50 years ago, some of which travelled overseas in shipping containers to us, while other bits have been found or sourced throughout Australia. “In the early days I never used to be very proud of the collection but I am now.
It is very hard to find war memorabilia these days and it really is special.” Mary said some of the vehicles have appeared in movies including My Brother Tom, Sullivans, Death of a Soldier, Mission Impossible and Rose Against the Odds. Mary knows the importance of holding together a collection such as the one they have in the twin towns. “Too often in Australia I’ve seen collections sold and when I get customers commenting it brings to home how important it is to keep and maintain it.” The couple may have scaled back their winery commitments over the years but they still produce a good drop. Their best sellers include Verdelho — a refreshing table wine with aromas of lemon, honeysuckle and lime. The 2012 light Shiraz is a well-balanced medium bodied easy drinking wine. Chanter Estate is available for tasting, cellar door sales, Devonshire teas, cheese platters and grape eating in season. The Estate is open weekends, public and school holidays 10 am – 4.30 pm For more information contact 5480 7878 or 5480 0334 or email chanterestatewinery@ bigpond.com

WHAT'S ON Summer 2017–18
THERE is no better way to get into the Christmas spirit than the Epicentre Christmas Spectacular. This annual event is growing each and every year and organiser Narelle Smythe said it really is a true celebration of family and Christmas. “It is a great family night and we cater for as many people as we possibly can. Christmas is such as happy time and family is so important at his time of the year,” she said. The event will be held at the Moama Recreation Reserve and includes a children’s and youth festival in the lead up to the main event.
The children’s and youth event will kick off from 5.30 pm – 7 pm and includes an animal farm, jumping castle, food and drink. The main festival gets underway from 7.30 pm – 9.30 pm and features carols, live artwork dances and a fireworks show. Candles and glow sticks will be available on the night. Entry to the event is free but gold coin donations are welcome on the night.

FESTIVAL IS MOVING WITH THE TIMES
January 11-14
THE Girgarre Moosic Muster is a favourite event on the acoustic circuit, featuring four days of free musical entertainment. New workshops and increased open mike times are set to make this year’s event the best yet according to director Jan Smith. “The weekend is all about country friendliness and participation,” Jan said. Held from January 11–14 at the Girgarre Hall,
the muster includes 35 workshops from drumming on the djembe (African drum), singing sea shanties and bowing skills for the violin to adding more elaborate effects to your guitar technique. Bluegrass, folk, blues, country, pop, gospel and contemporary music also feature, along with free evening public concerts with leading bands on two stages. The Saturday workshop schedule is full and continuous with jamming throughout the site and

adjacent camp ground. Expert tutors will lead workshops in tin whistle, programming iPads for storing music, mandolin, guitar, piano accordion, banjo, double bass, violin, ukulele, percussion, song writing and more. The junior muster popular with school age children features comic characters, music, crafts, poetry and games. Beginners or musicians looking for a change also have the opportunity for free instrument loans. Sure to attract attention

HOLDEN ONTO THEIR DREAMS THE Galea boys — Tony and Mark — wear their hearts on their sleeves. And their blood might run red, but that’s OK, because red is the colour for Holden, not accursed Ford and its patrician blue. Now the boys (incredibly they are not brothers, not even related but have become firm friends) have turned their passion into a profession and taken over running the National Holden Museum. The museum has been in Echuca for 24 years and is dedicated to preserving Holden vehicles, history and memories. In February the friends from the south-east suburbs of Melbourne moved to the area to manage the largest one brand car Museum in Australia. “We are enthusiasts,” Tony said, in one of history’s great understatements. “We have a passion for these cars.” Since their takeover, the duo has made many 54
changes to the museum. From renovations, changing cars around and filling the gift shop, the museum has undergone a massive transformation. All visitors are encouraged to get up close to the cars, take pictures and read about the history of each exhibit. Moving through the museum at your own leisure, the story of Holden unfolds. The 161 years of the Australian car company has seen a lot of change and

the museum showcases the variety in vehicles with the 1956 and 2000 official Olympic cars both on display. Likewise the museum hosts some more modern Holden models, the classic utes, family cars and even a hearse. The familiar car from the movie Charlie & Boots is also on display, donated to the museum by actor Shane Jacobson. The Museum is an ever changing display with the vehicles and memorabilia courtesy of Holden Ltd,
Holden enthusiasts and private collectors. Among the donated cars, the Galea boys have a few of their own on display. Mark’s 1956 FE Holden Sedan is an ocean mist green vehicle which is commonly referred to as the ‘poverty pack’ as there are no accessories included. The rare car may not have indicators or seat belts, but it is still fitted with almost all its original trimmings. “I didn’t particularly like it at first,” Mark said. “But I

kept thinking about it so I had to get it.” The ‘56 Holden drives like a new car according to Mark and will celebrate its 60th birthday on New Year’s Eve. For Tony, his passion for Holden began as a boy with his dad buying an FB Holden in 1963. “I always liked them,” he said. “When I was 16 I left a $20 deposit on a yellow FJ Holden”. And the rest, you could say, is history as he is now the proud owner of eight
Holdens with a few of them on display in the museum. With 47 cars on show, the Galeas want anyone and everyone to take a walk down memory lane and reminisce about growing up around the quintessential Australian vehicle. The National Holden Museum is open every day from 9 am – 5 pm and is located at 7–11 Warren St. Adults $9.50, seniors $8, children (5–16) $3.50 and families $22.50.

TONGALA ❯ 21 mins from Echuca
Tongala was settled by squatters in the 1840s and irrigation ensured the success of this intensive little dairying community. In the township, a series of murals depict the evolution of the dairy industry and groundwater issues. Other murals give an insight into the armed forces, while a monument pays tribute to the Australian Light Horse, and an avenue of honour recalls those who lost their life in the Armoured Corp in Vietnam.
GUNBOWER
❯ 29 mins from Echuca
Gunbower is the gateway to Australia’s largest inland island and significant wildlife
sanctuary, Gunbower Island. The island is home to protected populations of kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes and 160 different species of birds. It is an idyllic location for camping, canoeing and a spot of bushwalking or bird watching. The running of the Gunbower Gold Cup in October is a picnic race day out for all the family.
BARMAH
❯ 31 km from Echuca
Barmah is the gateway to the World Heritage listed Barmah State Forest which, with the Moira State Park, forms the largest red gum forest in the world. A forest drive from Barmah heads off along River Rd, which is two-wheel drive friendly, but dusty when dry. Kingfisher Wetland Cruises allows people to see the ecology and history of the forest, with some trees estimated to be more than 300 years old and more than 40 m high, the birdlife and its habitats and the Aboriginal significance of the area.

Safe boating on NSW waterways
When it comes to the Murray River, which borders Victoria and New South Wales, the laws of NSW apply. Wear a lifejacket Lifejackets are the most important piece of safety equipment on any recreational vessel. An approved lifejacket must be carried for each person on board most vessels. It must be the correct size for the wearer, in good condition and worn in a range of situations, for example: • Children under 12 years are required to wear a lifejacket at all times in a vessel under 4.8m, and when in an open area of a vessel less than 8m that is underway
WE A R A LIFEJACK ET
• On vessels less than 4.8m, everyone must wear a lifejacket when boating at night or when boating alone • On canoes and kayaks, everyone must wear a lifejacket at most times, including at night or when boating alone. These are only some examples of the lifejacket wearing requirements on NSW waterways. If using inflatable lifejackets, these must be serviced at least every 12 months or at longer intervals in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions. For more information visit rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime.
Alcohol and drug offences
When towing or wake surfing
Breath testing, including random breath testing (RBT), can be conducted on the operator of a vessel while it is underway, including drifting. Permissible concentration of alcohol limits are as follows:
You must have an observer onboard who is responsible for observing the towed people and reporting all matters affecting them to the master, including vessels approaching from behind. The observer must be at least 16 years of age or hold a boat driving licence, must not be under the influence of alcohol or a drug, and should be familiar with the standard hand signals.
0.00 for recreational vessel operators aged under 18 years
Consider the impact of your vessel’s wash on other people and the environment, ensuring your wash does not have a dangerous, damaging or unreasonable impact.
Less than 0.02 for commercial vessel operators over 18 years Less than 0.05 for recreational vessel operators over 18 years The operator of a vessel includes anyone steering or exercising control over its course or direction, and includes the observer in a ski boat or PWC and anyone being towed.
Safety on houseboats When you hire a houseboat you will be advised how many people are legally allowed on the vessel at any one time, whether underway or moored. The maximum number on any houseboat is 12, but this could be less depending on the size of the vessel. If you exceed the maximum number of people you may affect the buoyancy of the vessel and cause it to capsize. Never jump from houseboats. It is an offence and you could hit unseen snags in the water, or slip and hit the edge of the boat.

DON’T BE AN ASS AND MISS THE DONKEYS Sunday, December 3 THE Tongala Donkey Shelter is hosting its annual fundraising day on Sunday, December 3. Home to more than 200 donkeys, the shelter is one of only three in Australia. Founder May Dodd said the shelter relied on fundraising and donations to go towards the $250,000 required to run it each year. “A donkey is friendly, curious and affectionate — a lot like a dog actually,” May said. The shelter caters for donkeys of any age, size and colour and they have a philosophy to never say no to a rescue. “We take the donkey first and sort out the rest later,”
May said. The open day includes a tour and talk on donkeys. There is a variety of items for sale including clothing, cards, calendars and specialty made donkey jewellery. There will also be a sausage sizzle and a variety of cakes and biscuits for sale. Entry is $20 per car. Gates open from 11 am – 3 pm at 1949 Matheson Road, Tongala. TASTE GUIDE Sunago
Cape Horn Vineyard
A gathering of friends and food. This is what we represent. Fusing fresh flavours with ancient secrets, Sunago provides a unique, unrivalled dining experience in regional Victoria. Though Greek at heart, we offer an expansive selection of dishes to please everybody.
Located on a sandhill wedged between the Murray and Goulburn Rivers upstream from Echuca, Cape Horn Vineyard is named after the riverbend resembling Cape Horn on the tip of South America.
Greek street food is known throughout the world. Here we incorporate that formidable reputation. From souvas to salads, lunch at Sunago is perfect for that relaxing afternoon with friends. Dinner is what we pride ourselves on. Tradition dictates that Greeks all gather to share good company and great food for their evening meal, and this is where we derive our name ‘Sunago’ from. Incorporating ancient Greek methods with modern stylings, we can please anybody. Whether it is a romantic table for two or group bookings for special occasions. 505–507 High St, Echuca, VIC 3564 (03) 5480 1900 info@sunago.com.au www.sunago.com.au
