IF YOU WERE A BEAR WAKING UP FROM YOUR WINTER HIBERNATION A LITTLE LATER THAN USUAL THEN YOU HAVEN’T MISSED MUCH. IN FACT, BETWEEN GOING IN AND OUT OF LOCKDOWNS, EVENT CANCELLATIONS AND WEARING MASKS FOR THE PAST YEAR OR SO — THE APPROACHING SUMMER IS LIKE A MIRAGE AFTER TWO WEEKS OF WALKING THROUGH THE DESERT. However, our revised reality is here; our hospitality venues and the world of entertainment are ready and waiting for your patronage. As people are gradually allowed to gather in respectable numbers, inside and out, the What’s On calendar for the border region is continuing to expand. Smiles, now that you can see them as masks come off, are broader than ever and there is a new look to the calendar of events for Echuca and Moama — it is full. The shine off the fast-flowing Murray River is more radiant than ever and as we welcome back our metropolitan cousins from Melbourne people can probably be forgiven for letting their hair down a little as 2021 becomes only a distant memory. There seems to be a concerted effort, at least in our region, to make up for lost time as hotels, restaurants, cafes, festival and sports event co‑ordinators pour their energy into producing their annual events at levels beyond even their own expectations. For those of you who have shelved plans for overseas travel, who can’t yet head off to visit family in states that are yet to open their borders, or would just prefer to enjoy the offerings in your own backyard, this summer’s What’s On edition has everything you need.

Christmas is coming to Murray River Council towns with the pop-up lighting trail back for the second year running from November 12, showcasing brand -new installations in parks across the Murray River Council region. Temporary lighting installations will be in place across the footprint to complement local park spaces and brighten up towns for the Christmas season. These will include Riverside Park in Barham, Recreation Reserve in Koraleigh, Soldiers Memorial Park in Mathoura, Kerrabee Soundshell in Moama, The Triangle in Moulamein, RFS Shed in Murray Downs, Mensforth Park in Tooleybuc and Playground Park in Wakool. 8

Each installation will be the perfect place to enjoy outdoor gatherings and events for everyone. Murray River Council Mayor Chris Bilkey said the event had received overwhelmingly positive responses in the past, making it all the more exciting to bring it back again. “This is an exciting initiative that will provide the opportunity for communities to reconnect and an experience for people of all ages to enjoy,” he said. “Our parks and reserves offer the perfect canvas for Christmas lights and locals will certainly be impressed with how amazing the spaces look when they are lit up after dark.” He encouraged locals and tourists alike to visit

neighbouring towns around the region and visit all the unique attractions. Murray River Council economic, tourism and community development officer Rachel Cresp said council was encouraging everyone to hit the road and discover each town’s unique installation. “The large installations will be great for selfies, family photos and for locals to utilise park spaces for outdoor gatherings and events as permitted,” she said. “We also encourage locals to shop and support local when hitting the road.”

Shining a light on Christmas cheer
TO GET WELL AND TRULY INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT, ECHUCA-MOAMA UNITING CHURCH IS HOSTING A CHRISTMAS BY CANDLELIGHT EVENT WITH MERRY MELODIES AND MORE. Set for Sunday, December 12 at 7 pm at the church, this festive event is one for the whole family. The night will showcase solo performances from choir members and churchgoers and, pending restrictions, hopefully the appearance of the local River Voices choir to sing some carols. Filled with readings, songs and Christmas spirit, church member and organiser Anne Peace said it would be a lovely night for the community to come together. “Everybody just wants to be out and about and meeting with their friends,” she said. “I think people are really looking forward to that. “We always look on our events as a gift to the community.” There will be a week of Christmas fun at the 12

See the Murray from a new angle THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO EXPLORE THE MURRAY RIVER. You can take a stroll along the shore, hop on board a majestic paddle steamer or even something faster like a jetboat. Or you can ride a stand-up paddle board. Jess Snelson at Echuca Moama Stand-Up Paddle believes it’s a unique way to explore the river and its surroundings. “It’s just a nice way for people to actually take in the serenity,” she said. “You start off in the bush and it’s nice to sort of take in the wildlife, then you go under the historic bridge, and you go through the Port of Echuca. “It’s such a unique experience.” While Echuca Moama Stand-Up Paddle does hire out boards to take on holidays, most people decide to take a tour downstream — accompanied not only by Jess, but also Laila the dog. 14
What’s On
“She’s a bit of a fan favourite,” Jess said. “I’ll give an on-water demonstration to people, and she’ll be searching around for a stick for them to throw.” Taking a board out for a paddle is something that’s suited to all ages. Toddlers and kids aged up to eight can sit on the front of their parent’s board while they paddle along the river. For stand-up paddlers keen to muck around on the water, there’s also the six-person party board available for hire. “All the people all on one board as you paddle down, it’s a bit of fun,” Jess said. Downstream tours start from $40 and include the shuttle upstream and board hire. To book, text Jess on 0439 682 693 or visit www.echucasup.com.au

One of the largest one brand car museums in Australia Echuca Racing Club manager Garry Armstrong said he could not wait to see the atmosphere of a crowd take over once again, when the club hosts its annual New Year’s Eve race-day meeting. “It’s really good news that we will have reached 90 per cent double-dosed by December and that there will be no caps on crowds,” he said. “It will have been nearly six months since we have welcomed people through the gates. “As a club, we are really looking forward to welcoming people back and what better day to do that than on New Year’s Eve. It’s such a fun day out for families and friends. “We will run a COVIDSafe event, one that follows all of the government guidelines.” Now more than 15 years since its inception, the New Year’s Eve meeting has become a staple event on the local racing calendar.

From rusted-on fans of horse racing to holidaying families looking to escape the campsite for a day, the meeting is loved by everyone. And this year will be no different. “It has really grown over time,” Garry said. “We get decent crowds each year and with New Year’s Eve being on a Friday this year we should get a great turn out. “And it’s great for the kids to come along, it’s a real family event. “This year we will have a bit of live music and a wide-range of activities available for the kids. “There will be face painting, sport activities and if the weather is nice we’ll have a giant slide as well. There will be a mixture of activities on offer.” Garry said punters who would like to let their hair down will have access to a free shuttle bus on the day. “We will run shuttle bus that will be free of charge and it will stop at places across Echuca-Moama.”

Celebrate the new year in style THERE ARE NOT MANY BETTER PLACES TO BE ON A WARM SUMMER EVENING THAN PERCHED ON A PICNIC RUG ON THE GRASS HILL AT THE ECHUCA RACING CLUB. With a fading sun dipping behind the grandstand, live music ringing out while trotters fight it out on the track — it’s an experience not to be missed. But don’t take our word for it, go along and discover for yourself. The Echuca Trots will once again be a drawcard over the holiday season with their New Year’s Day race meeting. The 2022 instalment of the annual night event is tipped to be a cracker. Although the 2021 meeting was capped at 1000 patrons, Echuca Harness Club marketing manager Ros Rolfe hopes more revellers will be allowed in by the time January 1 rolls around. And with Victoria scheduled to ease restrictions on crowds before December hits, you can bet the New Year’s Day meeting will be back bigger and stronger. As in years gone past, there will be off-track entertainment for everyone to enjoy. Dance the night away to live music, treat yourself
to food or if you feel lucky there will be TAB and bookmaker on course. And there will also be activities for the kids to enjoy as well. It truly is a great night out for the entire family. Adult tickets are available for $10 while kids under 15 will be able to enter for free. More information will be announced in the build-up to the event, however, those wishing to attend the meeting can make a booking now by phoning 5482 2036, emailing the club at echuca@hrv.org.au or on Facebook. The January 1 event will be the start of six bumper meetings for Echuca Harness Club. The club will host a meeting on February 24, followed by the time-honoured Echuca Cup on March 25. The Easter Sunday meeting is another not to be missed on April 17. The final two meetings are scheduled for May 31 and June 22. What’s On

Echuca and Moama set for multisport weekend GEAR UP FOR A WEEKEND OF TOUGH COMPETITION, BRIGHT SUNSHINE AND FUN THIS SUMMER AS THE ANNUAL ECHUCA/MOAMA TRI CLUB MULTISPORT WEEKEND RETURNS ON JANUARY 22 AND 23. Highlighted by the feature Morely Auto Group Sprint Triathlon on the Saturday, the weekend offers something for the entire family and will give the border towns of Echuca and Moama a chance to show off their many summer attractions. Multisport Weekend race director Shane Kervin said the entire team was looking forward to welcoming a big crowd back to the region for the 2022 event. “We are very excited to be hosting the multisport weekend in January, which will be comprised of a junior triathlon event at Moama beach on the Saturday morning, a sprint distance triathlon in the evening and then on the Sunday morning we have an open water swim, which is called the Wharf to Winery on the Murray River,” Shane said. “Planning is well under way for those events and we were lucky enough to host it this year even though we were in the middle of a pandemic, so we are hoping to have that same luck in 2022 and we are very confident that once again we will be able to put on a good show.” He explained the factors that made this event a must for athletes of all ages and abilities. “The twilight triathlon is our marquee event and attracts up to 300 competitors of all ages and abilities, and it is a very unique event in the sense that we are lucky enough to have a historic port area and historic wharf that people can swim through in the Murray River — there is nothing like it anywhere else,” he said. “Our bike ride in that event is an inner-city course, so it is great for spectators and competitors as they
aren’t going out on back roads or anything, and then the run course is on the banks of the Murray River and through the wharf, so we are really honing in on the attributes of Echuca and Moama and what they are well known for.” For those thinking of joining in for what promises to be a fantastic weekend, Shane had this message. “The event weekend is going to be close to Australia Day, so those thinking they might want to get involved should be turning their mind to accommodation and things because EchucaMoama is always popular that time of the year,” he said. “We would love to see as many people as possible down there and if they have any questions they can touch base with us through our Facebook page.” What’s On

What’s On
January 26 | Echuca-Moama Rotary club president Teresa Carlson said this year the event would cater heavily to children and families in terms of celebrations and entertainment. “We’re encouraging families to come down to the soundshell, have a picnic and enjoy some familyfriendly entertainment for the afternoon,” she said. “It’ll mean a lot in COVID times when people are wanting to get out and do something … we want the community to be more involved with Australia Day and what it’s about.” The free all-day event will kick off with flag-raising and other formalities before a smoking ceremony by Traditional Owners. As part of traditional events, citizen of the year presentations and citizenship ceremonies will also run during the day.
A free-to-enter art show is running alongside familyfriendly games that the whole family can enjoy. For some of the adults and older kids, the local Men’s Shed and the Echuca-Moama Youth Hub alongside community organisations and interest groups will have displays for everyone to enjoy. “We want to get people to embrace it and enjoy the day, it’s something we all need right now,” Teresa said. The event will have COVID-19 safeguards in place, including QR code check-in and social distancing requirements. For more information, keep an eye on the Rotary Club of Echuca Facebook page, or contact the club at secretary@echucarotary.org
A free barbecue breakfast will be available from 7.30 am, with other barbecues and food available throughout the day as well as live music and entertainment.

Billed as ‘the biggest ski race in the world’, the Southern 80 churns up the Murray River from Torrumbarry to Echuca. Boats race at speeds from 90 km/h, with the most powerful getting up to impressive speeds of nearly 200 km/h. Southern 80 president Steve Shipp, who has experienced the race himself as a competitor, said it was a unique event. “There’s three ski races across the world that people want to do — this one’s at the top,” he said. “We get people coming from all over the world, people come from Europe and the US and we always get a few competitors from New Zealand. “This one’s the challenging one and it’s the one you’ve gotta work at, but it’s a great event.” Throughout the race’s three days from the lower classes right up to the super-boats, there’s a whole range of events from launch night to celebratory breakfasts and spectator parties. Steve said the event brings in $13 million to the Echuca-Moama economy, providing a huge boost to local people and businesses. “We get 30,000 spectators up and down the Murray so it’s a great race,” he said. The Southern 80 2022 will run from February 11 to 13. More information can be found on the website at www.southern80.com.au or via the Southern 80 Facebook page. What’s On

According to festival director David Frazer, announcing the event’s date sparked an “enormous response”. “There’s clearly a real desire and a lot of love out there from the local communities to see this event return,” he said. “We can’t wait to put on a show again; get everyone back into those beautiful red gums and bring that community back together.” David said some hard decisions were made regarding the festival format, after “a pretty remarkable period” over the past 18 months for the music and live events industries. “We weren’t prepared to jeopardise our event and the event experience with all those beautiful casual elements that people have come to love about Riverboats over the last nine years,” he said.
“It’s looking like we’ll be able to do what we’ve always done, which is to present one of the most relaxed festivals on the calendar in what is arguably one of the most beautiful festival sites in Australia.” Tickets and the line-up are set to be released on November 15 for the COVID-safe event, for which all patrons aged over 12 must be fully vaccinated. “It’s shaping up to be a really eclectic line-up, really fun,” David said. “It’s now time for us all as an industry to pick ourselves up and hopefully look forward to a really wonderful summer of live music, and we hope Riverboats can be a big part of that.” For more information, visit www.riverboatsmusic.com.au or the Riverboats Music Festival Facebook page. Mini golf is a smash hit THERE ARE FEW ACTIVITIES MORE UNIVERSALLY FUN THAN MINI GOLF, AND FOR THE TEAM AT RICH RIVER GOLF CLUB, IT’S SOMETHING THEY CAN GLADLY ATTEST TO. Watching thousands of happy people pour in to enjoy the mini golf course since its inception, there’s no hyperbole from marketing and sales manager Paul Lavars when he details just how big of a smash hit it has been for the club.
club’s inviting brand. Paul said it had not only served well as a standalone attraction, but also keeps patrons at the venue for longer periods — which is a win for all involved.
“The mini golf has been around for a couple of years now and has been a great success even in the COVID environment,” he said.
“Rich River is wanting to build on its ‘alive with fun’ motto so it’s a perfect fit,” he said.
“It’s the type of course that people seem to like playing over and over to try and better their scores, as it is a skill-based mini version of a regular golf course.
“It has been great for the bistro too, with many families and groups eating lunch or dinner then taking on each other at mini golf so it’s added to our revenue in many ways.
“It’s been popular with families of course, and it’s not too hard for kids — but many adult groups like to play and get competitive and it’s been amazing for Christmas parties and team building groups.”
“When it’s under lights in the evening it looks great and is very popular during daylight savings as we are open till 10 pm.”

Best bowlers return to Moama ONE OF THE BEST EVENTS ON THE AUSTRALIAN BOWLING CALENDAR WILL ONCE AGAIN GRACE ‘THE GREENS’ OF MOAMA BOWLING CLUB THIS SUMMER. Bowls Premier League action — which has been a feature of the Moama bowling schedule for a number of years — will excite the border region again from February 21 to 22. BPL14 will be the biggest and best of its kind, and not only because the world-class bowlers who will take part in the proceedings will be itching to perform at their best after long COVID-induced periods of inaction.

An expanded 10-team roster will be introduced for the first time, the prize pool has increased to $125,000 and an additional four hours of television coverage will help make Moama Bowling Club the centre of the bowling universe for the length of the tournament. It also means the club is the place to be for local members and bowlers — as well as those in the surrounding regions. “It’s good to get so many world-class bowlers to the club for an event like this,” sports venue manager Kevin Anderson said.

“It’s great for the members and supporters to be able to watch the best in the world on their doorstep. You would usually have to travel to the Gold Coast or somewhere like that to see bowls like this. “The BPL has been coming here for a few years now and it’s always a great week.” The Murray Steamers — crowned champions of the competition twice across its first 13 editions — will have the full support of the home crowd as well as the home-green advantage. Kevin will take to the green as part of the Steamers in February, alongside Ryan Bester and Natasha Van Eldik. Ryan Burnett will coach the outfit.

The 2022 race will still run later that same year on the original dates from November 21 to 25, 2022.
“A lot of local causes really rely on that money, so we’d like to raise as much as possible,” he said.
The historic race covers a 404 km stretch of the Murray River from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill over the event’s four days, with organisers hoping for a goal of 300 paddlers taking part.
Between 2016 and 2019, competitors raised $800,585 for various community causes and groups, with a further $1 million economic benefit flowing to the region during the course of the event.
Each team independently raises money that is later donated to community causes including First Nations youth services, local sport teams and mental health support groups.
Spectators can watch the competitors from checkpoints or along the banks as they paddle past in teams large and small, competing in a variety of watercraft from kayaks to canoes.
Organiser Shannon O’Brien said the impact of COVID-19 on the public’s ability to donate was recognised, but he would be grateful for any and all funds that could be raised.
“It’s really good for people to watch and cheer on the paddlers,” Shannon said. For more information, visit the event website at www.massivemurraypaddle.org.au

What’s On
Echuca-Moama The business has three magnificent paddle steamers moored at Echuca, the PS Canberra, the Pride of the Murray and the PS Emmylou. And cabins on the Emmylou are becoming hard to come by. Managing director Rohan Burgess said bookings for the team’s recent seven-night cruises for regional Victorians “sold really well” and they were expecting similar interests now that lockdowns in Melbourne had eased. So much so, they are thinking of just offering the Emmylou for overnight cruises. “It’s so popular that we’re moving into that space all the time for her,” he said. Guests can choose to stay up to six nights in one of Emmylou’s luxury cabins, with an onboard chef, all meals included and onshore excursions. “We’ve got a mooring downstream on the bank
of the Murray where we’ve got an outdoor dining experience and campfire,” Rohan said. “We’ve got this purpose-built dining table that’s in the bush. “It’s a really cool experience.” The company also partners with Kingfisher Cruises to take guests on an eco-tour of the Barmah Choke, the narrowest section of the Murray River. It’s where you can find the largest stand of river red gum trees and home to 236 species of birds, 50 mammals and more than 500 plants. But first and foremost, Rohan said it was a great cruise for relaxing. “People love the food, love the hum and drumbeat of the paddles on the water,” he said. “We’ve had so many repeat customers.” To book your cabin on the Emmylou, visit murrayriverpaddlesteamers.com.au

Head into the great outdoors THE GOULBURN AND MURRAY VALLEYS ARE A PREMIUM DESTINATION FOR THE AVID OUTDOOR EXPLORER. Rich in camping and fishing destinations, and known for their big blue skies, the areas surrounding Echuca-Moama are always popular come summer. Blue Sky Outdoor owner Maurice McLean offered a few tips for visitors as they begin to plan their holidays. “Either side of Torrumbarry Weir,” he recommended for premium fishing spots on the Murray River. “Upstream side of Torrumbarry for your monster cod, and downstream side for a little bit less activity, yellow belly and smaller cod.” Twenty-five minutes north of Echuca, Maurice said it was a great spot for tourists to set up their lines. The Campaspe and Goulburn rivers are good to fish as well. “There’s no good picking out single spots,” he said. “You can even fish under the old Echuca bridge.” As far as camping is concerned, Maurice said you can’t beat the banks of the Murray. “You could also give Wakiti Creek a push,” he said. “It’s a bit of a tent-style resort between Shepparton and here.” As the store owner for 15 years, Maurice said they were the first port of call for those from the city to find out the lay of the land. “We’re pretty much the first stop,” he said. “The way we operate is on a good service base, so we get our return customers.” Stocking everything you need for camping, fishing, and all other outdoor adventures, Maurice is expecting the store, and town, to be “overrun” with visitors. “It’ll be flat out.” Visit Blue Sky Outdoor on the Northern Hwy, Echuca, or give the team a call on 5480 0855. 60

Ready to welcome visitors ECHUCA HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS COME OUT OF COVID-19 LOCKDOWN AND HIT THE GROUND RUNNING — AND RUNNING AND RUNNING. The society has immediately launched three small temporary exhibitions — all showing at the same time — at its Dickson St museum. EHS president Margaret Hart said the ‘mini’ exhibits were: Trophies Over The Years, The Written Word Always Tells A Story and Land Transfers. Margaret described the trophy exhibit as “an incredible array of silverware” that was in itself “a remarkable catalogue of achievement through generations”. She said the society’s museum had become the final home for literally dozens of plaques, cups, medallions and all things successful. “They are all here and they are just waiting for you to discover them,” Margaret said. “The Written Word Always Tells A Story doesn’t just tell one story, it is basically an archive of the twin 62

towns — books, articles, papers, letters from the earliest days. “And they combine to tell a wonderful story, so come and check it out — and see what story it tells you. “Land Transfers features a collection of early land titles and conveyance documents recently received by the society. “From the mid 1800s to 1950s, it lets you chart the emergence of areas such as Connelly, Minor and Haverfield streets — even Victoria Park. “Of course that link with land must by necessity also feature many well-known early residents in this exhibition, so don’t miss this one either.” Margaret said there was more to see at the museum than the three exhibitions. She said because of the hard work of the society’s

Sharing the joy of music
LOCK JANUARY 5 TO 10 INTO YOUR DIARY, BECAUSE GIRGARRE MOOSIC MUSTER IS BACK IN 2022. Regarded as Victoria’s most inclusive music festival, the muster is hosted by a crew of local and national volunteers in the small town of Girgarre, 30 minutes’ drive from Echuca. Muster director Jan Smith said the festival was about introducing people to music in all forms.
Guitar, banjo, accordion, singing and songwriting are just some of the workshops on offer. Camping is available at the public reserve mere metres from the town hall, or accommodation can be found in the nearby towns of Tatura and Kyabram.
“It’s bringing people to music to learn, to participate, whether it’s an instrument, singing, percussion or whatever.”
The muster began 15 years ago when a few musicians performed at the local farmers’ market. Now, the five-day festival welcomes visitors from far and wide to the region to learn an extra thing or two about music.
The muster hosts up to 40 workshops for beginners as well as established musicians, so everyone can “have a crack”.
After it was cancelled for the first time in 2021, Jan said she was looking forward to welcoming the muster community back to town.
“It’s about bringing people to music, but not just to sit and listen,” she said.
“Many people go through their life and never have an opportunity to learn to play an instrument,” Jan said. “It doesn’t really matter about your ability, it’s about the participation and the warmth that you get from it.”
“I think this year’s muster is going to return a bit of joy to people’s souls,” she said. “It’s really like the family comes home.” Visit gigarre.com.au for more information, or contact Jan on 0458 546 283 or garryandjan@ bigpond.com What’s On

Cohuna
Cohuna hits the ground running THE COHUNA BRIDGE TO BRIDGE IS BACK ON TRACK FOR EARLY 2022, TESTING FITNESS LEVELS THROUGH SERENE COHUNA BUSHLAND. It offers seven events for people of all different ages and abilities — three are dedicated to cycling with four to running and walking; each event also has a virtual option for those unable to attend. From the mini-miler of 1.6 km for kids, to a 21.1 km half-marathon trail run, there’s truly something for everyone. Race organiser Jess Holgate said the day was always one to look forward to, and with more than 400 entries for this year’s race, the day proves to be a winner. “We’ve been really lucky with the past two years, being able to sneak them in between lockdowns,” she said. “This year we raised around $17,000 to donate to the Cohuna District Hospital.”
Jess said the team of organisers was looking forward to hosting the event for the community to come together once again. “Next year’s should be great, visitors are allowed to come in and watch, there’s activities for the kids,” she said. “It is better if you’re in the events — there’s a family one of about six-and-a-half kilometre run or walk, they really enjoy that.” The Cohuna Bridge to Bridge will be held on Sunday, March 6 — with more information to be released in the coming months on registrations and entry prices. Kevin takes his art to Gunbower SOMETIMES, THE BEST ATTRACTIONS ARE FOUND BY CHANCE. And sometimes, they’re found after the publican across the road directs you to them. That’s what has drawn many visitors to Gunbower’s newest main street resident, the Kevin Williams Art Gallery. “A lot of local people have been bringing friends that are visiting to see us,” Wiradjuri artist Kevin Williams said. Kevin and his wife Tanya Flowers opened the gallery in January, after a trip to the town half-anhour from Echuca last year. 80

They began by just opening on the weekends, before they realised that the pub and the café were bringing visitors into the gallery. Now, they’re open on the same days as the Workshop Café down the street. “We’re on the main road through town,” Kevin said. “Since we’ve been set up, people are excited to see a gallery in Gunbower.” With an artistic career spanning 20 years, Kevin’s artwork has been exhibited and sold worldwide. His reputation precedes him, with quite a few visitors tracking him down from his gallery space in Echuca with directions from the visitors’ centre.
“I get a lot of people that know I was in Echuca and ask where I am,” he said. “And people specifically come to Gunbower to come to the gallery.” He describes his work as contemporary Aboriginal art with a strong Wiradjuri cultural influence and is inspired by many of the natural attractions in the area. “There’s a bit to visit and we’re just one of many attractions in Gunbower.” Kevin Williams Art Gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday.

Deniliquin
IF IT’S BEEN A WHILE SINCE YOUR LAST MUSTER, GET YOUR FIX AT THE DENILIQUIN UTE MUSTER MUSEUM.
Showing all things Deni Ute Muster, the museum has an array of exhibits detailing how the famous event began — displaying a range of memorabilia from whips and Akubras, all the way through to donated utes. Deniliquin Ute Muster marketing and media co‑ordinator Charlotte Wade said the gallery has been popular among crowds since opening, with so much history on offer. “Some people spend 20 minutes here, some people spend a couple of hours,” she said. “We have a reading nook with cut-outs from papers from each year, and there’s touchscreens with photos from all the way back in 1999, so people can go through those and see if they can find themselves.” Ever changing, the museum is a time capsule of one of Australia’s most-loved events. With loads of merchandise on offer and stacks of information to consume, the museum is one for everybody to enjoy. “It’s great for some people who’ve never attended the muster before,” Charlotte said. “It gives people who may have had a preconceived idea about the event a glimpse at what it’s all about. “They can come in and see it’s a very familyoriented event.” The museum is open from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5pm each day, with openings on the weekends by appointment; entry is a gold coin donation. Kyabram
Hall is an artistic centre A SHORT 30-MINUTE DRIVE FROM ECHUCA, THE BUZZING TOWN OF KYABRAM IS THE PERFECT DESTINATION FOR A DAY TRIP. In the centre, you’ll find the historic Kyabram Town Hall. Built in 1895, the hall is rich in history, according to promotions officer Anne Churches. The building was constructed by the Kyabram Mechanics Institute, before being used as the general town hall for balls, dances and meetings. Anne said the team would commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Kyabram Reform Movement on November 13. “It toppled the Victorian Government, and the first meeting for that was held at the Kyabram Town Hall,” she said. In 2014, the hall was renovated and now promotes the arts as one of the largest exhibition spaces in the region. This summer, visitors can pop in to see the photography of Bill Murray as well as the permanent collection of clothing through the ages. “It originally started as a gallery to show historical 84

vintage clothing,” Anne said. “Now, it’s developed into an art gallery and a display of historical memorabilia.” From December to January, Victorian photographer Bill Harris will display an extensive collection of nature and wildlife photos. Based in Euroa, he began taking photos of birds as a creative outlet for his busy life. Now retired, Bill said he had developed his skills and passion. Then, the Northern Planes Basket Weavers are set to showcase their finest works in February and March. Visitors in the festive season also enjoy peeking into Santa’s Cave, although this year he might stop by a little differently as a result of COVID restrictions. Kyabram Town Hall is open Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm. For more information about upcoming exhibitions visit kyabramtownhall.com.au or call 5852 1546.
Tongala
Hay, that looks like bales of fun THE TONGALA HAY BALE TRAIL IS SET TO RETURN FOR CHRISTMAS 2021, AFTER IT WAS A ROARING SUCCESS LAST YEAR. The trail of painted hay bales began in 2020 when a local farming family created an installation based on the popular children’s TV show Bluey, featuring the characters Bingo and Bluey. The bales were later moved next to the Tongala Post Office after much interest from the community. In late 2020, the Tongala Development Group and volunteer artists created 19 installations around the town, which were displayed from December 2020 to January 2021. The 2021–22 trail will officially launch on December 1 and will finish on January 24. Tongala Development Group vice-president and volunteer hay bale artist Amber Townsend said the popularity of the trail inspired the group to bring the hay bales back for a second year. “They just became so popular, people were coming from all over to look at them so we decided as a development group to continue it,” she said. “We came up with the idea to have an entire mapped trail around Tongala to encourage people to visit because it’s really nice to have all the visitors come to town.” The trail will be funded by local businesses, but an ‘Adopt a Bale’ program will also run, allowing locals to financially contribute to the installation and be recognised on the decorated bale itself. For the full map of the trail or for more information, keep an eye on the Visit Tongala Facebook page or Instagram @tongala_hay_bale_ trail, which are updated regularly. What’s On

Escape to Cactus Country
WHEN JIM HALL’S FATHER WANTED TO SELL HIS COLLECTION OF CACTI IN 1979, JIM JUMPED AT THE CHANCE TO PURCHASE THE COLLECTION AND PROPAGATE A UNIQUE GARDEN FOR THE PUBLIC’S FASCINATION AND ENJOYMENT. Decades later, what started off as a home collection has blossomed into the 5 ha garden it is today, encompassing more than 1000 different varieties of cacti from all corners of the globe. Jim is still the creative director of Cactus Country, with his wife, Julie, acting as chief financial officer and his son John taking on the mantle of chief executive. “Just through hard work and determination he willpowered it into existence,” John said, adding that the business was still going strong today. “We’re quite findable, people are looking for things to do and we pop up in the region … like last weekend we would’ve had 250 people through and that has become fairly normal.” 86
