Deniliquin’s skating, scooter and bike enthusiasts are flocking to the newly built Deni Skate Park, drawn by its state-of-the-art features and inclusive design.

It has become clear that the main users, the youth of Deni and surrounds, are happy with the updated skate park and space.

Everyone is invited to visit the park, regardless of age or skill level, to enjoy this exciting new local treasure.

The park’s surroundings provide a serene backdrop, featuring meticulously maintained spaces, a lagoon bustling with diverse birdlife, and expansive grassy areas ideal for family gatherings.

Visitors will also find plenty of comfortable seating throughout the park for relaxation and observation.

Conveniently located just a short, leisurely stroll from Deniliquin’s main street, the Deni Skate Park offers a central, easily accessible destination for all community members.

From novices taking their first roll on two or four wheels to experienced enthusiasts seeking more challenging features, the local skate park caters to all abilities, fostering a vibrant, inclusive community space.

Epic entertainment at Deni Ute Muster

The internationally famous Deni Ute Muster is about to roar back into town, and is less than a month away.

It will again feature some of the biggest acts in Australian music, as well as international country artists. The muster is again set to draw huge crowds, eager to experience the internationally acclaimed event’s thrilling offerings.

From toe-tapping live music and heartwarming family activities to adrenaline-pumping competitions, the Ute Muster offers a smorgasbord of experiences over two exciting days.

“What started as a community event for a town struggling with a devastating drought now brings tens of thousands of people of all ages to celebrate music, mateship, and of course, the iconic Aussie ute,” NSW Special Minister of State John Graham said when asked about the Ute Muster last year.

Fan-favourite American country artist Tyler Hubbard, formerly of the chart-topping duo Florida Georgia Line, makes his eagerly anticipated return to the Ute Muster for the second consecutive year.

Now with his focus on his solo career, Hubbard has had several singles that have spent a number of weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 list, and is sure to again be a hit with Ute Muster fans.

As well as internationally renowned country acts, Aussie pop star Amy Shark will also take the stage as one of the biggest drawcards this year.

Shark, born and raised on the Gold Coast and an eight-time ARIA winner, has been a pop sensation for some time, releasing smash hits like ‘I Said Hi’ and her newest single ‘Sunday Sadness’ has also reached the number one spot on the ARIA charts.

Her attendance and performance at the Ute Muster this year is sure to be a highlight.

The 2024 Ute Muster boasts a star-studded lineup featuring Kip Moore, Aussie legend John Williamson, rising star Brad Cox, and the talented Amber Lawrence, alongside a host of other top-notch performers and local favourites.

With music playing from the morning through to night-time, there will be no shortage of top-notch entertainment to take in across the event.

As for family-friendly entertainment, there will be more than ever to choose from. Old MacDonald’s Travelling Farm will delight young visitors with an adorable menagerie of furry and feathered friends, including cuddly rabbits, playful lambs, gentle alpacas, and chirpy chickens. Carnivale Corner returns, providing rides such as dodgem cars and a Ferris wheel. Brophy’s Circus will also be in attendance, putting on shows five times a day, featuring aerialists and clowns in the big top tent.

Throughout the weekend, attendees can immerse themselves in the heart of country culture with thrilling rodeo events and classic country show competitions, celebrating Australia’s rich rural heritage.

Those in attendance can look forward to whip cracking displays, where the Riverina title will be contested, as well as the ARB bull riding spectacular and wood chopping displays.

There will also be a fireworks display that promises to be a “sensory experience”, accompanied by music.

Do it in Deni at the Street Bazaar

The annual Do it in Deni Street Bazaar is back in 2024, but with one major difference. Normally held to coincide with the Victorian Labour Day weekend in March, this year’s event has been moved to Melbourne Cup Day weekend instead.

The Deniliquin Business Chamber said the spring climate on Saturday, November 2 should appeal to a wide range of local and visiting fun-seekers.

A section of the Deniliquin CBD will be closed off for the Bazaar, giving you access to activities and businesses in Cressy St - between Edwardes St and Napier St - without the impediment of dodging traffic. This will create one long stretch of road lined with the regular store fronts, and a variety of stalls and vendors. Activities will also be spread into the adjacent and picturesque Deniliquin Waring Gardens. Businesses will be offering shopping specials just for the day, so make sure you take full advantage. Complementing the CBD business, popular stalls in

the past have included handmade jewellery, local arts and craft and even fresh produce. Local service providers also often take part, showcasing what’s available in the community.

There’s no chance you’ll go hungry during the Bazaar. If the nearby cafes don’t have anything to suit your taste buds, the food vans surely will.

The provided seating and live music will for a lovely atmosphere to take a break between activities, or to just sit and relax with friends - or to make new ones.

A range of other entertainment options will be available, which includes games and attractions specifically for the young ones. And make sure to

keep an eye out for the Deniliquin Business Chamber bunny.

Now a famous part of the Bazaar, the popular Deni Dachshund Dash will again be a highlight of the day. Watching the little sausages navigate the running lanes, and other competitors, is a spectacle to behold. And while some compete in hilarious costumes, this Dash is not your basic novelty race. Some competitors from interstate just to be involved, and the title of ‘top dog’ is a highly coveted prize.

Best of all, the Do it in Deni Street Bazaar is completely free to attend and enjoy! Simply show up and immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere and endless entertainment.

McLean Beach Holiday Park offers the traveler a quiet comfortable and spacious environment to unwind and relax. You can listen to the abundant bird-life as you rest in the shade of our tranquil bush setting.

Fun on the river

At the heart of Deni is the Edward River (Kolety) – a place of natural beauty that’s home to well-loved beaches, swimming spots, boat ramps, long stretches to explore by kayak, and plenty of places to throw in a line in search of Murray Cod.

As the weather warms up in spring, and leading into our hot summers, use of the river ramps up.

But you don’t have to dip a toe in to actually enjoy this river.

You can easily take in its beauty by following the Beach to Beach Walk from McLean Beach in the town’s west to Willoughby’s Beach in the east. It takes you past the Deniliquin CBD, to beautiful sitting areas, sculptures and through the Deniliquin Island Sanctuary.

Whether you seek adrenalin pumping action in your speed boat or wake boat, or prefer a more passive experience in a houseboat, canoe or kayak the beautiful Edward River has it all.

The Edward River, shores lined with giant river red gums, winds through Deniliquin offering a relaxing and peaceful experience for visitors.

The river around Deni is divided into a ski zone and a no-ski zone, so whether you want a peaceful

connection or a wild ride, the Edward River has it for you.

Downstream of McLean Beach is the ski zone, and upstream of McLean Beach is the no-ski zone best suited for fishing, houseboats and canoeing.

McLean Beach is also a popular swimming location, where you will find barbecue and bathroom facilities. It is the spot to be for a full day of water activities. There’s also a public boat ramp and plenty of parking spots available.

Willoughby’s Beach is ideal for swimming, camping, fishing and ‘floating’ – jump on the floating device of your choice and let the river take you to McLean Beach.

Sandy beaches and shady trees complete the little piece of paradise you will find at Willoughby’s, which is located inside the Murray Valley Regional Park.

The beach is also pet friendly meaning you can bring your pooch along for a swim.

There are five public boat ramps in Deniliquin, and one located further out of town at Benarca Bend.

Eat, sleep, play golf

Deniliquin Golf Club hosts one of the most picturesque courses in the region.

You can enjoy the beauty of this golf course, alongside the kangaroos, kookaburras, superb parrots, echidna, goannas, lizards, pelicans and a host of other wildlife that abounds in this paradise of nature.

At its best, Deniliquin golf course with its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses.

If you’re looking for a trip away, the Deni Golf Resort has you covered with a range of packages, built to take the stress out of finding accommodation. Its 22 units overlook the ninth fairway, and are nestled among bushland.

The resort and course are in a superb location on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. It’s just 30m from the resort to the first tee, and it’s a shorter distance to the bushwalk track.

The course perfectly reflects a chance for all golfing standards to enjoy a fun and challenging round.

LOCAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

By modern standards the course is not long — 5817 metre par 72 for men, and 5118 metre par 72 for ladies. However, off the back tees it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered.

Poor shots find the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition.

A feature of Deniliquin golf course is the ‘same day play’ principle that applies. On most days you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 and book your tee off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater for your golfing needs. If you prefer the relaxation of a golf cart, there are plenty of those available too.

After your round on the course, enjoy the club’s facilities or relax under the verandah. Friday nights are a speciality in the clubhouse, when there are meat raffles, great meals and a fun atmosphere where locals

A large range of stalls with something for everyone

Explore Deniliquin's history

The Deniliquin & District Historical Society Museum displays some of the REGION’S oldest treasures in the freshest ways.

The society intricately explores the rich and complex history of Deniliquin, with an original and authentic flair that will help even the most reluctant of tourists feel at home.

When you drop in to the Macauley St museum, you never know what to expect. You may even catch an eyeful of some old bloomers. Yes, on purpose.

The ladies of the historical society have been known to dress up in historical clothing to welcome tourists.

While the costumes don’t always make an appearance, members always welcome their guests with genuine enthusiasm and an open mind.

Often if you visit, you will be invited to sit down and enjoy a cup of tea with society members, many of whom lived through the events on display throughout the museum.

“We have a core group of volunteers that are always there,” member Meg Christian said.

“It’s the friendliness of the volunteers that makes people come back.

“When visitors come in, they are always welcomed, they are shown around, and if they have any particular interests, we point them out to what’s specific to them.

“Most of our members are elderly, and some of them have lived in Deniliquin all their lives.

“So they have a lot of history just in their heads - if you’re interested to sit down and have a chat. Visitors are always invited to sit down with us for our cup of tea about 11am.”

The museum has an enormous and well cared for collection, with a large variation in scope.

With such a large amount of information on everything ‘Deni’, there is something for everybody — from history buffs to farming enthusiasts. And the collection is growing all the time.

Added only recently was a teapot determined to be more than 130 years old, and connected to a prominent local family. The ornate electro plated nickel silver teapot, which is intricately engraved with floral patterns, was presented to James McKees in 1889 for his Champion Merino Ram Grass Fed at the Deniliquin Show that year.

It is believed to be the second oldest piece of ‘silverware’ in the museum’s collection now, the oldest being another Deniliquin Show trophy dated 1883. The teapot was gifted back to the community, for display and safe keeping at the Historical Society, by Mr McKees’ ancestor Sue Folwell.

The building which houses the region’s history alone is something to behold. The open-faced museum is tasteful and an insight into riverside elegance. With a rose studded garden crawling beside the footpath, the site is classically beautiful.

After exploring the museum, Deniliquin’s eateries and cafés are a perfect treat.

The Deniliquin and District Historical Society Museum is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am to noon. Other times and group bookings are by appointment. Call 0408 454 948.

Visit the 'Rocket Park'

The famous Scott’s Park rocket in Deniliquin’s west is sure to send your child’s imagination into outer space, while giving you the rest and relaxation you need.

The Russell St park is now one of the most popular and highly recommended parks in the whole region.

There’s no secret as to why you should spend an afternoon enjoying its facilities with the whole family.

The park includes a flying fox, climbing net, climbing wall, sand digger, spin point twister, jolly

jeep, rocket ride and nature play equipment.

If that isn’t enough the park also features a BMX pump track, half basketball court and zipline.

The famous refurbished rocket, which gave the park its nickname, is also a popular play spot and a great photo op.

While the kids are running free, parents can sit back and relax with shelters, tables, and barbecue

facilities. A toilet is also located in the park.

An additional visual element has been added to the park thanks to the artistic makeover of the Russell St water tower by artist Cam Scales.

And right next door to the park is the Deniliquin Swim Centre, which boasts three pools, a hydrotherapy pool and a newly installed splash park for all to enjoy.

A paradise in River Country

The Mathoura and Picnic Point area is an enchanted wonderland for lovers of the Australian bush, the river

The Murray Valley National Park, which stretches more than 70,000 hectares and includes wetlands of international significance, has arguably the best access in the region to the Murray River. It features good dry-weather roads and sprawling low river banks that feed out across flat sheets of water.

Mathoura is a popular destination for those seeking a gentle country lifestyle and peaceful retreat in the heart of River Country’s beautiful natural environment. It has a rich and unique history, a charming main shopping street, a vast array of public artworks, a popular calendar of events, and beautiful forests and waterways at every turn.

There’s so much to see, touch and experience in this little slice of river paradise. Outlined below are some of the region’s brilliant attractions.

Mathoura Heritage Trail

The Mathoura Heritage Trail offers visitors the opportunity to take a journey through time on a self-guided tour that retraces the footsteps of the early pioneers. Discover the historical landmarks that make Mathoura the town that it is today. Pick up your brochure and map from the Mathoura Visitor Centre.

Mathoura Pioneer Cemetery

Absorb the region’s old-time atmosphere and discover legendary stories of the pioneers who forged a life in an unforgiving land when you visit the historic Mathoura Pioneer Cemetery, which records the passing of some of the earliest settlers in the

and the great outdoors.

district. The Pioneer Cemetery is part of the Mathoura Heritage Trail. You can also read more about the cemetery in the River Country - Mathoura History, Heritage and Environment guide, also available from the Mathoura Visitor Information Centre.

Edward River Bridge Picnic Area

Whether you’re camping out in the adjacent Edward River Bridge campground, or taking a day trip from Deniliquin or Moama, Edward River Bridge picnic area is a great place to stop for a barbecue lunch. Its location within Murray Valley Regional Park, part of the Murray Valley reserves, means you can even bring your dog along to this picnic area, so the whole family can enjoy a fun day out.

Equipped with picnic tables and free barbecues, Edward River Bridge picnic area is set beside the majestic river red gums for which Murray Valley Regional Park, joined to Murray Valley National Park, is known. Cook up a storm on the barbecue or sit down and relax at one of the picnic tables.

When you’ve polished off your picnic lunch, there’s a lot more to explore. Go for a walk along the Gulpa Creek Forest walks or bring along your kayak for a spot of paddling on Edward River canoe and kayak trail which has a wheelchair-accessible kayak launch right near the picnic area.

Mathoura Timber Heritage Walk

Opened in May 2019, Mathoura’s Timber Heritage Walk offers a captivating journey through the rich

and colourful history of the region’s timber industry. This free, self-guided walk features 10 informative panels, each mounted on red gum posts, that detail the fascinating story of Mathoura’s red gum timber industry. These panels are strategically placed throughout the scenic grounds of the Timbercutter restaurant and the Picnic Point precinct. Immerse yourself in the captivating narrative of the river red gum, from the formation of the majestic red gum forests to the thriving timber industry they spurred. Stroll at your own pace and step back in time to meet some of the earliest pioneers who played pivotal roles in this extraordinary story. As you wander, take in the serene forest air, listen to the soothing sounds of nature, and enjoy the journey. Bathe in the forest air and the visceral sounds of nature, savour the journey, and keep an eye out for the intriguing stories.

Reed Beds Bird Hide Boardwalk

The Reed Beds Bird Hide at Mathoura is a birdwatcher’s paradise; with different birds to see every time you visit, you’ll never grow tired of this pretty place. Take your camera for a stunning photo of an eastern great egret or a musk duck thrashing in the water to attract a mate. Walking along the boardwalk, look for yellow rosellas and superb wrens or watch at the edge of the water for the purple swamphen. Turn over the bird panels as you stroll along the boardwalk; check out which birds are vegetarians and which prefers frogs, find out who honks like a goose, but soars like an eagle.

The town is rich in history and tells the story of the early settlers, shearers, farmers, the meeting of the rivers and more. It’s the ideal getaway for families on a budget and for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s also a popular camping and fishing destination, with plenty of spots along the river to pitch a tent or drop a boat in. Fishing in particular is a real drawcard with easy access to the Edward, Wakool and Niemur rivers, along with the Billabong Creek. The Edward and the Billabong both run through the centre of town and feature some of the best fishing spots in the area. Some of the highlights of this community in spring are summarised for you here.

Along the Edward River

Embrace the sunny spring mornings and begin your day with a leisurely stroll along the Moulamein River Walk, which traces the Edward River and beautiful Billabong Creek. It’s full of native wildlife and fauna, and also holds great cultural significance to the landscape of the local Aboriginal community - the Wamba Wamba people. Along the river walk you will come across the Big Tree. Believed to be the largest living red gum in Australia at more than 300 years old, it has an impressive circumference of more than 11m which you need to see to believe! Keep your eye out for the Ring Tree and Scar Treet too.

Celebrate the pastoral past

Nestled in native bushlands on the Edward River, Mooloomoon Woolshed offers a unique glimpse into Moulamein’s pastoral past. Learn all about the region’s important shearing history and hear tales from the settlers and shearers.

Tranquillity on the lake

Enjoy the tranquil waters of the 15ha lake, which is fantastic for water skiing, sailing and all sorts of water

sports. Make use of the barbecue facilities and the adjoining local swimming pool. An extensive number of bird life call the lake home including black swans and is home to several endangered species including the Southern Bell Frog.

Historic town stroll

Moulamein is home to a number of historic buildings and attractions. Visit the historic Moulamein Courthouse, perched at the end of the footbridge across Billabong Creek. The courthouse served the region from 1848 until 1968 and the current structure was built in 1890. Explore the Old Wharf, which was constructed in 1908 and still stands as a reminder of bygone days when the town prospered as an inland port. Moulamein Heritage Village showcases artefacts and machinery from the region and is the new home to a number of buildings that have historical significance to the local area.

Artisanal finds

Visit Moulamein Art Gallery for a delightful coffee and cake experience, where you can explore a diverse array of art and crafts produced by local talented

artists. The gallery is open on Thursdays and Fridays, or via appointment.

Fishing galore

Fishing in Moulamein is a must, with good access to the Edward, Wakool and Niemur rivers. The junction of the Edward River and Billabong Creek in particular, are well-known spots for fish to bite.

Spirit of the Land

Lockhart’s Spirit of the Land Festival is a colourful and vibrant family fun event, celebrating the beautiful land around us and the Lockhart area.

This wonderful festival began in 2006 during the worst drought in Lockhart’s recorded history, as a celebration of the resilience of those who live and work on the land.

From the very first event, the Spirit of the Land has proved an outstanding success – reviving community spirit, inspiring enthusiasm and putting a small town well and truly on the festival map.

Home to the famous National Farm Art Sculpture Award, Lockhart’s Spirit of the Land Festival promises a whole weekend of family entertainment.

While the sculptures are incredible in themselves, the festival is so much more.

There’s also fine art, Indigenous and photography exhibitions, open gardens, boutique market stalls, vintage cars, an incredible wool art gallery plus food, wine and some of the friendliest locals you’re ever likely to encounter.

And to make your experience as pleasant as possible, there is live music all day, and a fantastic fireworks display on the Saturday evening.

This year’s festival will be held Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13.

Admission for both days is just $10, which allows entry to the sculpture exhibition, fine arts and photography exhibition, open gardens and farm tours.

Admission to the Greens Gunyah Museum, including the Doris Golder Gallery, is an additional $5.

SHOES

Finley is fast gaining a reputation as a ‘mural town’, with another large scale design emerging in August.

Finley's mural magic continues

The murals have all been designed and painted by one artist - Damien Mitchell.

Damien’s art is internationally renowned, and he shares his time between Australia and America.

Growing up in Wagga Wagga, his graffiti art landed him in trouble on more than one occasion as a child.

Now people are crying out to secure his services, and Finley is lucky enough to be home to a growing collection of them.

Damien’s latest contribution to Finley is a large scale mural celebrating the history of the Finley School of Arts.

Located on the side wall of the historic Murray St building, it was created in the lead up to the building’s 120th birthday celebrations.

Damien spent an entire week in the town working on the awe inspiring masterpiece.

It pays homage to the social and cultural importance of the School of Arts over the years.

The Finley School of Arts has been home to a vast variety of community gatherings and celebrations since it was established.

It’s been home to Catholic Church services, weddings, dances, dramatic performances and much more.

A facility for the community, it is because of the community it was established in the first place. The community supported various fundraisers to cover the cost of construction.

Damien’s connection with the community spans back to 2018, when he was first commissioned to create

murals at Finley’s Tuppal Hotel by family friends and then publicans Greg and Michelle Brain.

As well as creating a number of murals inside the hotel, the first public mural was a nod to the hotel’s namesake - Tuppal Station.

It depicts a Merino ram and an old wool shed.

Others include depictions of some of Finley’s famous faces - Aussie band Spiderbait and AFL footballer turned television personality Shane Crawford.

Damien is also the artist behind the Finley Bowling Club’s vibrant mural and another paying tribute to a local mechanic at Boomerang Motors.

Rumour has it Damien has been asked to create even more art in Finley, so a return trip to see what else springs up is a must.

ANatural Response

‘A Natural Response’ is the name of an art exhibition being held in Berrigan later this year, celebrating and displaying the works of local artists Jan Barnett and Janice Graham.

These Berrigan artists will have their art works displayed at the town’s Country Women’s Association Hall in October.

The artists have both worked with mixed-media, using water-colour, acrylic and oil painting across their art careers.

A statement on the exhibiting artists and their stylistic approaches explains how “Janice and Jan’s contrasting and complementary works reflect the depth of their intense observation of life”, adding they have used “the natural world in figure and landscape, including many hours spent in plain air, painting and sketching from which they gleaned inspiration for their works and a deepened connection to their surroundings in their individual creative practice.”

The two artists will also be running a beginners’ print making class on Thursday, October 10, in conjunction with the exhibition.

The official opening of the exhibition will be Friday, October 4 from 6.30pm until about 10pm. There will also be music on the evening from ‘The Swinson Music Project’, a two-piece band from Berrigan.

One of the band members will also have works displayed at the show, his art focusing on biomechanical surrealism.

The exhibition will then open to the public on October 5, 6 and 7 and October 12 and 13, from 10.30am to 4pm. The Country Women’s Association hall is located at 36 Chanter St, Berrigan.
