IT’S SUMMERTIME AND I AM DONNING THE TOGS AND HITTING THE WATER.
8 THINGS TO SEE AND DO
First stop to see my winter white legs is Echuca Moama Stand Up Paddleboard, which this year are leaving from the East Boat Ramp, so we can enjoy more time on the river, paddling through beautiful bush, under the old bridge, past the picturesque port, for a quick dip at Moama beach, before finishing at the new bridge.
68 EVENTS CALENDAR
Hoping for my summer colour to start showing, my next water adventure will be to don a lifejacket and see how high I can fly at Aqua Island.
74 JUST DOWN THE ROAD
Still wearing the togs, there is a chance my winter white legs will be seen around the Campaspe outdoor pools, with free entry this summer. Watching from the riverbank is where you will find me as the Southern 80-speeds past or cheering on the athletes as they compete in the Wharf to Winery Echuca Moama Multisport Carnival. Being a lover of Australian music, you will find me at the Riverboats Music Festival, more likely than not reminiscing about my younger years in front of Peter Garrett and the Alter Ego and Tim Rogers and the Twin Set. Keeping out of the heat for a little while, I’ll be popping on a café cruise aboard the M.V. Mary Ann, to experience the Murray River at its best in modern comfort. To finish my summer adventures on and in the water, I’ll take the beloved on an evening cruise on the PS Emmylou for a great spread of charcuterie and a glass of wine, while watching the sunset over the riverbank. Now that I think about it, it is my sister’s birthdays in January, so the beloved might stay home and us girls go, who are more likely to enjoy the glass of wine. Have fun in and on the water, remembering to play safe this summer in Echuca Moama.

This year Echuca Moama Stand Up Paddle owner Jess Snelson is mixing up your paddle trip from previous years. “In the past everyone that has been coming to do a paddle with us, we have picked up at Vic park, and this year we are doing it a bit differently,” Jess said. “We will meet everyone at the Echuca East Boat Ramp, so we will go a little bit further up river to get a bit more paddling time, then paddle through all the gorgeous bush area, with the local wildlife. “Then underneath the old bridge and paddle past the picturesque port area.
“You don’t need any prior experience, but you need to be able to swim,” Jess said. “Once people arrive, on time, we can unload all the boards and I will give a demo. “Just not an on-the-water demo, only because we have changed to the Echuca East Boat Ramp, and it is too hard to do. “Then once they are on the water, then I will also give instructions on how to paddle, and if they are doing it wrong, correct their technique.” “We literally get people from all ages.
“They will be able to stop at Moama beach as well, depending on how high the river is, have a look at the beach, maybe have a swim.
“If you have got kids that want to come, that might not be able to paddle the whole time, they can sit on the front of the board.
“And then they finish at the new bridge, which is at Vic Park.”
Participants then paddle downstream by themselves or have the option to hire a guide.
Jess and her team will then ferry you back to your car at the Echuca East Boat Ramp.
Echuca Moama Stand Up Paddle can accommodate individuals or groups of up to 30 guests.
Open to all ages, as long as you can stand-up, paddle and can support yourself in the water. To take part in Echuca Moama Stand Up Paddle it is compulsory for everyone under 18 to wear a lifejacket, with lifejackets optional for everyone over 18. 14

Slip and slide this summer
AQUA ISLAND IS AN ENORMOUS FLOATING PLAYGROUND WITH OBSTACLES WAITING FOR YOU TO CONQUER WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY, WITHIN A MAN-MADE LAKE IN MOAMA. Aqua Island owner Jayne Bares knows that the floating playground is also physically demanding.
“There are all these platforms that allow you to get up onto Aqua Island and off you go again.
“You discover muscles that you never knew existed in your body after three hours on Aqua Island,” Jayne said.
“We have had people in their 90s out there, having a ball.”
“We don’t have an age limit; it is a personal choice whether you want to do something like that. “You are going about four metres to get out into the park, so it is not that far out, but you do fall off a lot and have to get back up again. 16
What’s On
Jayne advises if you would like to play at Aqua Island you will need to book. “We are 15 minutes out of Moama, so you can do the drive and take the risk, but it is better if you book, because then you know you have got a spot,” Jayne said.
Moama “Groups of any size can book, if we have the places on that session, you can book in. “We have big sunshades that you can sit under and watch, spectators are free. “It is good fun.” There is an on-site kiosk for drinks and snacks, as well as toilet and change facilities and lifeguards on duty for all sessions. Everyone who wants to conquer Aqua Island must be able to swim and be three or more years of age. If a child is between three and seven, they must have a paying adult by their side the whole time they are at the water park. Between eight and 12 years old, an adult responsible for the child must be watching from the grounds at all times. Everyone who is in the water at Aqua Island is required to wear a lifejacket. New Year’s Eve off and racing NEW YEAR’S RACING RETURNS TO THE ECHUCA RACING CLUB THIS YEAR TO CAP OFF 2023 IN STYLE. The popular NYE Kids and Family Day Out race day returns after missing last year, one of just two country race days being held in Victoria on December 31. A regular fixture on the ERC racing schedule for 17 years, club president Craig Sutton said the event was a great way to bring in the new year both on and off the track. “We bring families to the races for the day, which tends to work well,” Craig said. “It’s a fun, family party atmosphere. We have live music throughout the day, and we have lots of kids activities so mum and dad can go and enjoy the day.
“It’s been a tough season,” he said. “We’ve had a fairly wet one coming off some really extreme weather. “We did a major track renovation this time last year, so we didn’t hold our (New Year’s Eve) meeting. We needed to give our track time to regenerate.” And regenerate it has, dishing up a true, lush track throughout the season. “The track is in unbelievable condition. You could eat your lunch off it,” Craig said.
“We have free buses running in and out of town, so no-one has to worry about driving. Everyone can just have a nice relaxing day, which is what I think new year’s should be about.”
The off-track action will feature free kids activities, while free shuttle buses will operate from the Moama Bowling Club, the Border Inn, the Star Hotel, the American Hotel and the Caledonian Hotel, continuing throughout the day back and forth to the track, which is located about five minutes away from Echuca.
The seven-race event comes after another successful Melbourne Cup meeting, and Craig said it would be good to draw the curtain on what’s been, at times, a challenging 2023.
Umbrella packages will be available while general admission and tickets for the NYE Party Enclosure can be found at echuca. tickets.countryracing.com.au/

The meeting regularly attracts visitors, not just in the crowd, but on the track, with some of the state’s top drivers and trainers marking Echuca on the calendar.
The Elmore Cup program is slated to be run on Thursday, December 21, one night after Echuca holds its only December meeting.
The New Year’s Day Cup is the feature event, while the Frank and Carmel Ryan Memorial Pace also attracts attention. Pick a yabby and place a bet
THE KOYUGA HALL IS HOLDING ITS FREE FAMILY FUN EVENING FOR AUSTRALIA DAY WITH A BARBECUE, YABBY RACES AND A MONSTER RAFFLE ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 26 FROM 5PM. Koyuga Inc. treasurer and booking officer Amanda Souter is looking forward to the event as a way to bring the community together. “The afternoon is a bit of fun, as we all gather around the chalk circle and race our yabbies,” Amanda said. From 6 pm there will be a free barbecue of sausages and rissoles, with the big yabby race kicking off at 7 pm. A very limited number of yabbies will be available to purchase on the night. Funds raised at the event will go towards the upkeep of the Koyuga Hall, along with making improvements to the facilities as the committee can afford them. This allows the hall to be utilised more by the surrounding community. “We have everything needed to run an event, all the cutlery and crockery, matchy matchy tables, chairs and tablecloths,” Amanda said. “We are happy to have the hall hired for events, and have had engagement parties here and are about to host another wedding. “In future planning we would love to get a projector and a screen, so we can do more things for the community with the hall.
The Koyuga Hall is situated on 4 hectares of land, which can be used for all types of events. “It would be nice to let me know if you’re coming along, so we know number wise for the night,” she said. You can find the Koyuga Hall 3 km down the road from the Falcon Hotel on Odea Rd. What’s On

As the name suggests, Saturday, January 20 and Sunday, January 21 will bear witness to a huge display of multisport events, with the marquee sprint distance triathlon the jewel in the crown. “This event will be our 25th year celebration, that’s one of the big things we’re trying to push, we’ve literally been going for 25 years which is a big thing in itself,” event director Sarah Mulkearns said. “We’re finalising all details, but it will be a junior duathlon on the Saturday morning, which is the 20th of January, as well as a junior run relay. “Saturday evening there is a junior draft legal race, it’s a really specific race for certain juniors who 40

can race that race, then followed by our traditional sprint distance triathlon. “Then on the Sunday, we have our Wharf to Winery swim, which this year will have two distances; the traditional 3 km down river swim, and we’re introducing our 1.5 km down river swim as well.” A well-attended spectacle that utilises the scenic Port of Echuca area and Murray River, the race remains one of the few regional triathlons left, and typically attracts a large number of entries. “We generally get over 200 participants for that particular event, and we get about 400 over the weekend,” Sarah said.
January 20-21 | Echuca
“We have participants from all over Victoria, and obviously southern NSW as well. We have our local clubs like Shepparton, Swan Hill, we get people from Melbourne, Ballarat, Geelong. “Literally (people from) all over the state come to this regional event, because there’s not many regional triathlons left. We’re really proud that we’re able to continue that legacy and still have that event on.” The unique race is made special by the fact it snakes its way through such an iconic site, as well as the environment created by the spectator friendly course. “Certainly the atmosphere here right in the Port of Echuca,” Sarah said of what makes the event so extraordinary. “And just the real community feel that you get from the event, it’s a great spectator friendly course, you’ll see participants on the bike four times coming through, and you’ll see them a couple of times on the run as well.” What’s On

Southern 80 set to thrill ARGUABLY THE BIGGEST WEEKEND OF THE YEAR FOR ECHUCA MOAMA, THE SOUTHERN 80 SKI RACE WILL ONCE AGAIN THRILL THE HORDES OF SPECTATORS THAT GATHER ON THE BANKS OF THE MURRAY RIVER IN 2024 The iconic event, which will be held from February 9 to 11, is raced over an 80 km route from Torrumbarry to Echuca, and sees the boats and their accompanying skiers wind through the twists and turns of the Murray at up to 200 km per hour. Moama Water Sports Club president Steve Shipp said the race, which he likened to “Bathurst on water”, was an exciting spectacle for all who attended.
prestigious titles up for grabs on the Saturday, the Baker’s Blitz and President’s Dash. “The Baker’s Blitz is the superclass boats, so that’s all the class one entries, they’re the fast ones,” he said. “They’re allowed to do their maximum speed which nowadays, because it is all governed, is 120 miles/h, or 200 km/h.
“I think it’s the buzz, the fact that you’re up close next to the boats, and it’s the speeds that you see and stuff like that,” he said.
“So they’re the fast ones, and then there’s the President’s Dash which makes up the reminder of the top 40.
“But then on the other hand, it’s a great family sport. Families come and do it and watch it, and you get generations that continue doing it. It’s definitely an iconic sport.”
“The President’s Dash is all of the other boats, the Unlimited boats down to Outboards, and the fastest of those teams go for the prestige of winning the President’s Dash.”
With an action-packed program across the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, which culminates in the Southern 80 itself, there are also two other

“The Southern 80 is at the top with all of them, and it’s because of the length of the race, and you could have the best skier on the back, he won’t win it because you need the best driver,” he said.
With thrills to be had and competitors of every age and skill level competing, Steve said the Southern 80 should definitely be on everyone’s bucket list.
“You need the best team, and so the Southern 80 is about the team that wins, you can’t just have the best boat and all that and a couple

“It’s an event that’s very worthwhile coming to see,” he said.

Australia Day celebrations THE AUSTRALIA DAY 2024 CELEBRATION IN ECHUCA WILL BE AN INCLUSIVE EVENT, WITH EVERYONE WELCOME, NO MATTER WHERE YOU COME FROM. Held in Hopwood Gardens, the day begins at 7.30am with a free breakfast for anyone attending.
“We are hoping to have a flyover by the Echuca Aero Club, which is always a hoot.
The Australia Day event is put on for the community by the Echuca Moama Rotary Club.
“The morning really starts with the flyover, raising of the flags, and acknowledgement of country, before handing out the citizen awards.
Awards for Citizen of the Year, Young Person of the Year and Community Group of the Year will be handed out on the morning, along with speeches from officials and an Australia Day ambassador. In 2024 there will be no citizenship ceremony as that is now held separately by Campaspe Shire Council. A highlight of the morning for Echuca Moama Rotary Club Australia Day organiser Teresa Carlson is the flyover by the Echuca Aero Club. “We plan to make it a family fun day,” Teresa said. “The day begins at 7.30am and should be completed by around noon.
“Then the Australia Day ambassador speaks about their role. Teresa said events like Australia Day were still important as it is part of our heritage. “We need to work together and the only way we are going to work together is to do this type of thing, where everything is inclusive, nobody is left out, everyone is welcome,” she said. Come along to the Australia Day celebrations on Friday, January 26 at Hopwood Gardens, High St, Echuca from 7.30am. What’s On

Huge line-up for music festival RIVERBOATS WILL ROCK AGAIN, WITH SOME MASSIVE ACTS CONFIRMED FOR THE MUSIC FESTIVAL’S RETURN TO THE AQUATIC RESERVE IN FEBRUARY. The line-up includes seven-time ARIA award winnerMissy Higgins, Australian rock legend Peter Garrett, back for the first time since 2016, with the Alter Egos, country music superstar Kasey Chambers and popular rock band Regurgitator. The February festival will be the 12th edition of Riverboats, and festival director David Frazer said it might be the biggest yet. “I would say it’s our biggest line-up ever,” David said. “To have the likes of Missy Higgins, Peter Garrett, Kasey Chambers, and Russell Morris on the one bill is a huge coup, and I hope that we can fill the town and put on a good show. “To present artists of the calibre of Peter Garrett, who recently came off a farewell tour with Midnight Oil. “This will be his first outing since that tour wrapped up. He’s going to play a bunch of Midnight Oil songs throughout his set as well. “Regurgitator are a band a lot of our audience have grown up with. They packed out three nights at the Forum.”
The PS Pevensey will again put the boat in Riverboats with four acts set to take place on the iconic paddlesteamer, featuring performances by First Nation’s artist Kee’ahn alongside Minor Gold, JAZZPARTY and Sweet Talk. The floating shows are one of the more unique aspects of a music festival you’ll find anywhere. “Echuca Paddlesteamers have got behind us again, and we’re doing four shows on the Pevensey across the weekend,” David said. “Those tickets are already about half sold. It’s the only festival in Australia you can do that.” The festival is poised to return to its spiritual home in the Aquatic Reserve after last year’s event was forced into a relocation to Victoria Park due to the floods. Riverboats has endured a mix of COVID-19 disruptions and inclement weather since 2021, and David said it would be a thrill to return to the reserve with some redevelopment works at the site set to be completed in the next month. “Last year was a wonderful event at Vic Park, but it was something that was certainly unplanned,” he said. “We didn’t launch until mid-November last year; two days before we were due to launch, the water spilled over the amphitheatre. “The local shire has been doing a fair bit of redevelopment down there at the moment. “We’ll certainly have better access this year. They’re removing a large part of that creek and bridges down at Aquatic, so you’ll be able to move around easier.” Brian Nankervis also returns as MC of the event, the 11th time he will do so. Riverboats Music Festival is on February 16 to 18 at the Aquatic Reserve in Echuca. To buy tickets and see playing times, head to www.riverboatsmusic.com.au/ What’s On

LONGER DAYS AND WARMER NIGHTS MEAN IT’S THE PERFECT TIME TO PULL OUT YOUR TENT AND START THINKING ABOUT THE NEXT PLACE YOU’LL TAKE THE FAMILY TO CAMP. LUCKILY, THE ECHUCAMOAMA REGION HAS AN ABUNDANCE OF GREAT CAMPING SPOTS. SWIFTS CREEK This is the perfect spot for those who like to take their boat out when they go camping. Located in the Murray Valley National Park, this camping spot has access to a boat ramp, toilets, picnic tables and barbecues. It’s probably closer to glamping than camping. The national park is one of the best in the region, but no pets allowed. GUNBOWER ISLAND Why not spend the night camping on Australia’s largest inland island. The island has a lot of cultural significance, being an important Indigenous site, where artefacts such as shell middens, scar trees and oven mounds can still be seen today. The internationally recognised wetland offers free camping and fireplaces, making it a perfect choice for families looking for unforgettable nights. ULUPNA ISLAND Located inside Barmah National Park, this free camping site is a great spot for those who love nature and the tranquil sounds of the river. It’s a great family spot, with fireplaces meaning you can roast marshmallows as the sun sets or even cook the fish you caught earlier that day when you went fishing on the Murray River. Drop toilets are available, but dogs are not allowed.

Rodeo rides into town WHAT MAKES THE ECHUCA RODEO UNIQUE IS THE INCLUSION OF A FULL JUNIOR RODEO PROGRAM.
“Kids from the ages of 17 and under have the opportunity to come and compete at our rodeos,” M5 Rodeo Promotions owner Nicole McDonald said. “We supply all of their events, that is the junior steer ride, the junior barrel race, the junior breakaway, the junior team roping,” Nicole said. “We are affiliated with the Australian High School Rodeo Association, which enables those kids to be able to make it to the world finals in America. “That is something we are really passionate about is keeping our younger generation in a sport that they love. “They become so busy during the week looking after their animals and practising, that it keeps them out of mischief. “And we hope by displaying that to these rural communities that there may be other kids out there that may be interested in these events and may want to get into the sport.” 56
What’s On
Part of the junior program is a ‘Cowkids hour’ which is a free kids hour from 5.30pm to 6.30pm the night of the rodeo, where local kids are invited down to jump on the bucking dummy and have a go, before the main performance. “You will find that the competitor list will be quite extensive because this is the third year we will be coming back to Echuca, and it has really made a name for itself and competitors want to be on board,” Nicole said. “They want to come to great rodeos, as well as support the juniors. “We have got fantastic crowds, Echuca is a great spot for a rodeo and the locals love it. “This year we have opened up early bird tickets, to give the public the opportunity to get a couple of bucks off, with early bird tickets cheaper than at the gate.” The main performance starts at 7pm, with the open events, all the big bad boys of rodeo.
February 23 | Echuca
There will be open bull riding, open saddle bronc, all bucking horses and then the barrel race, breakaway, team roping and steer wrestling. This will be followed by live music by local singer Gareth Leach and his band, playing until late.
There will be an Echuca Rodeo after party at OPT Nightclub from 11.30 pm. Echuca Rodeo is on Friday, February 23 at the Echuca Showgrounds, Echuca South. Purchase tickets at www.m5rodeo.com.au/ or at the gate. What’s On

Members exhibits at The Foundry THE ECHUCA MOAMA ARTS INITIATIVE, FOUNDRY ARTS SPACE IS HOLDING ITS ANNUAL MEMBERS SUMMER SALON. Artist Elaine Van Dyk will be one of the many members with work in the Members Summer Salon. “All members, whether they are craft people, artists or anything anybody wants to make can be part of the group members exhibition over the summer,” Elaine said. “To become a member of The Foundry, you fill in an application form and pay a membership fee, it is as easy as that. “Members obviously have lots of benefits because we can enter our work into exhibitions like this and we can put in applications to have solo shows, as well. “But then anybody can exhibit, have exhibitions, you don’t have to be a member to have an exhibition of your own at The Foundry.” Elaine also regularly volunteers to mind the gallery. “I enjoy sitting there being surrounded by other people’s artwork,” she said. “I am actually a printmaker, so I do etchings and woodblock prints, but I am also putting in some little paintings. “I am mainly a landscape artist, most of my work is based in places I have been to, seen or remembered.
“I have always travelled, I’ve got some work based in WA or up at Mallacoota, so it is always an experience place that I depict, it might even be remembered,” she said. “I do a lot of my work sketching and then I work from the sketches. “The Foundry is just great, absolutely a great place for people to exhibit.
“A lot of it is based locally.”
“I think it is a wonderful space in itself and the committee do a fantastic job of hanging any exhibitions there.”
Based in Heathcote, Elaine’s work draws from the environment there, as well as the surrounding area of Castlemaine.
Echuca Moama Arts Initiative, Foundry Arts Space annual Members Summer Salon runs until the end of January 2024.

Girgarre | January 10-14
Cool sounds of community music GIRGARRE IS A MUST-DO-STOP FOR COMMUNITY MUSIC LOVERS THAT PUTS ARTISTIC PRACTICE AT THE CENTRE OF THE COMMUNITY’S LIFE. The town is literally creating an audible and lasting identity for the community and the people who live there, highlighted by the annual Moosic Muster. The story of the Moosic Muster goes that over 20 years ago, the Girgarre Development Group Inc started a produce and craft market on the second Sunday of each month. Girgarre Development Group Inc secretary Jan Smith wanted music at the market from the start, which in turn grew into the Moosic Muster and the monthly Jigarre Jammin’. “It was just one little idea that a person I had known over the years had,” Jan said. “I got him to get some music for the first market and that is how the Moosic Muster grew. “I asked them all back 12 months later, just for them to see what they helped to create as the market had blossomed. “Then that night they said ‘We ought to have a music festival here’.” So began Girgarre Moosic Muster. “It is an interactive experience for people who want to listen, want to learn, want to play, want to join in, want to sing, want to tap their foot,” Jan said. “People come in, they can camp or they can stay off site.
“It is tremendous because there is always good musos with some learners and it pulls everyone along.
“The Saturday of the muster is taken over by workshops all across the town, from ukulele to jazz from Australasian experiences to clogging in the hall.
“Everyone gets the joy of performing, it is amazing.”
“They have open mics, where you can facilitate hopping up and playing with a few of your mates. “They have a beaut thing called the ‘Hat Band’, where you put your name in a hat, your name is pulled out randomly. “Half a dozen of you have to go out and learn to play a song together, then they perform that song in front of everybody. 78
What’s On
You don’t need to know how to play or own an instrument to come along and be part of Moosic Muster, they will teach you and lend you an instrument. On the Friday and Saturday night of Moosic Muster there are free concerts at the world class soundshell in the Gargarro Botanic Gardens. Girgarre Moosic Muster is on Wednesday, January 10 to Sunday, January 14. For details and tickets, visit: www.girgarre.com.au/ moosic-muster
Strawberries never tasted better
Koonoomoo
THE BIG STRAWBERRY AT KOONOOMOO HAS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR OF AUSTRALIA’S BIG THINGS, AS IT COMES WITH A FAMILY FAVOURITE, FRESH STRAWBERRIES. Fresh strawberries and avocados are available until the end of January, along with any other fresh produce that is grown on the farm and can be taken home.
The mancave is well worth a look with its incredible collections of bikes, vintage signs, pinball, memorabilia and the story of HO down the Hume, a legendary car.
Fill your basket with jam, condiments, wines, liqueurs and hampers made on the premises.
A hub for everything yummy, The Big Strawberry is a must do stop for morning tea or lunch, with the café open from 9am to 2pm.
If you like, the friendly staff will make your basket into a hamper to take home for that someone special. Devour strawberry pancakes, a strawberry waffle or both. If you are a bit more of a traditionalist, scones with strawberry jam and cream are popular.
Don’t forgot a selfie out the front of the Big Strawberry. The Big Strawberry at 7034 Goulburn Valley Hwy, Koonoomoo is open from 9am to 3pm daily, except some public holidays.
There are other flavours in the freezer, but you can not leave without having a strawberry ice-cream or the more decadent strawberry parfait. If the season is right, grab a punnet of fresh strawberries to take home, if they make it that far. For the kids, the Big Strawberry has an indoor playground, which is free for children under three years old, with a small charge for those between three and 12 years old.

Get around hay bale trail
TONGALA HAY BALE TRAIL RUNS IN AND AROUND TONGALA OVER CHRISTMAS AND INTO THE START OF THE JANUARY SCHOOL HOLIDAYS. Starting during COVID-19, the hay bale trail was developed so that people visiting the town had something to do and look at, which in turn became a big hit in the community. This year the hay bale trail is going to be combined with a town-wide Christmas lights competition. “The hay bales will be within walking distance of the main street of Tongala,” Tongala Development Group Inc president Jason Kelley said. “They will be decorated with a Christmas theme, with some also being an ode to 100 years of Disney, to entertain the kids. “The Christmas lights competition is sponsored by Tongala businesses, with prize money for the best Christmas lights in town. “It is to encourage people to come into Tongala, wander around the hay bale trail, then stay for a meal and view the Christmas lights.” To search out all the hay bales on the trail there will be a map available on the Visit Tongala Facebook page or on tongala.com.au/ hay-bale-trail/

January 19 | Bendigo
Getting behind the effort to fight MND, one dollar will be donated to MND Australia from every ticket sold to the event. With the main performance starting at 7pm, you will see all the thrills and spills that can only be found at a rodeo. There will be open bull riding, open saddle bronc, all bucking horses, barrel races, breakaway, team roping, the steer wrestling with all the seasoned bad boys of the rodeo circuit riding on the night. “We are a family run business and our children are third generation cowboys,” M5 Rodeo Promotions owner Nicole McDonald said. “It is a family run business, my uncle is Garry McPhee and he has had bucking stock for more than 50 years now. “That is what makes it so special, we have taken this role as promoters and running rodeos throughout Victoria, but there is a long history of rodeo in our family and the breeding stocks and everything that goes into it.
“What is different about M5 Rodeo Promotions compared to say other rodeos that you will find in Victoria is we run a full junior rodeo program. The full junior program has junior steer riding, junior barrel racing, junior breakaway and junior team roping. For the junior events, the Bendigo Pro Rodeo is affiliated with the Australian High School Rodeo Association, meaning the rodeo can be a pathway for juniors to make it to the world junior finals in the United States. To encourage more youngsters into the sport, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on the night of the rodeo there is a free ‘Cowkids’ hour, where the kids can have a go on the bucking dummy to get a taste of the sport. Bendigo Pro Rodeo is on Friday, January 19, 2024 at the Bendigo Showgrounds. Purchase tickets at https://www.m5rodeo.com.au/ or on the gate. What’s On

Sink a line this summer THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN RELAXING ON THE RIVERBANK ON A HOT SUMMER’S DAY WHILE YOU WAIT FOR SOME FISH TO LATCH ON TO YOUR BAIT. Living near or visiting the Murray River means there is no shortage of great fishing spots where you can cast your rod and hopefully snag some dinner. Along the Murray, yellow belly (golden perch), Murray cod, bream or redfin are all there to be caught, so here are a few spots where you can reel in one of these beauties. 92
What’s On
TORRUMBARRY The Torrumbarry Weir is a well-known spot for fishing, and rightly so. The Murray River widens and deepens at this point, meaning there is an abundance of fish swimming in the water, ready to be caught and taken home for dinner.
Regional
Murray cod are the most popular in this part of the river, with golden perch also another target. BARMAH Barmah is another well-known spot where anglers head to to increase their fishing game. This spot is upstream from Echuca-Moama, where the river races and narrows, and where the fish are usually waiting for their food to come home. For patient anglers, this is a spot where silver perch, Murray cod, common carp and European perch can be caught, and usually, quite easily.
ULUPNA ISLAND It’s a bit further out of town, but Ulupna Island is a great spot to set up shop and cast your line. There are also some great camping spots on the island to help you make a weekend out of it and hopefully catch some fish. Similar fish to Barmah will be found, with silver perch and Murray cod being quite common this year. There are plenty other spots where you can cast your rod, so no matter where you set up, you should be having a lot of luck this year. What’s On
