Most music festivals struggle to move past the 12-month mark. But Echuca’s Riverboats Music Festival is celebrating its fifth year in February and it is set to be better than ever. “But not bigger,“ executive producer David Frazer said. “We are really happy with the size of our event. It’s big enough for a buzzing atmosphere but the artists still get to chat to the crowd. “It’s a really relaxed vibe, we don’t have an ‘exclusive’ attitude; we are keeping it manageable.“ But with Missy Higgins, You Am I and The Church headlining the event, the crowds are expected to flock to Aquatic Reserve in Heygarth St. >>

>> And if it’s anything like past years — that crowd will exceed 11 000 people, young, old and in between. The family-friendly, riverside event takes place under towering river red gums in a natural amphitheatre. Historic paddlesteamers wander past all weekend while occasionally the corellas get boisterous at sunset, but the onestage festival makes way for plenty of dancing space and room to set up a picnic rug and chairs. And considering picnic baskets and homemade spreads of food are encouraged, you will want the room to gather your friends and family around. Dozens of artists from around the country grace the stage across three days, hosting the likes of Sarah Blasko, Dan Sultan, The Cat Empire, Pete Murray, Tim Rogers and James Reyne in past years. 12

Mr Frazer said there was a big emphasis on getting people together. “It’s a great excuse to get some friends together, take advantage of the region’s fantastic food and wine and take part in one of the prettiest, laidback festivals in Australia,“ he said. “There is a warm ambiance across the whole weekend — we don’t have a mosh, we like the artists to mingle with the crowd.“ He said partnerships with district food operators and paddlesteamers had been struck this year, giving ticket-holders the opportunity to take advantage of the some of the best features of Echuca-Moama. “And there will be a selection of food trucks on site, adding to the relaxed atmosphere,“ he said. It will be one of Missy’s first performances since having a baby and

and I think a lot of people don’t realise what songs are theirs.“

Mr Frazer said he was hotly anticipating The Church’s performance on the Friday night.

Ticket prices vary, but a three-day adult pass costs $135.

“What a perfect way to open the weekend,“ he said. “The Church has produced hit after hit

EchucaMoama Market

Echuca-Moama is jam-packed with local food growers, preservers, craftmakers, textile designers, bakers and farmers. So it is no surprise the region has a range of diverse and exciting markets throughout the year for residents and tourists to take advantage of. The Echuca-Moama Farmers Market features the best of local produce, ranging from olives, cheese, fruit, bread, avocados, wine, sweets, jams and specialty soaps and goods. Market manager Frank Coonerty said the market was “very community minded“ with all profits going back into the Echuca-Moama region or the market committee itself. “When you buy from stallholders, the money is going straight to their family’s farm,“ he said. 14

“And all our coffee and food trucks are run by the market committee and operated by volunteers. “It really is a credit to the people who put in their time and effort to contribute to our market and community.“ He said preference was always given to local growers and site numbers exceeded 30 stalls during summer. “We also ensure there is not more than 10 per cent of the same product to keep it diverse and interesting for customers,“ he said. The market started 11 years ago and is bursting out of its Alton Reserve location.

It also supports district organisations like Community Living and Respite Services to help raise money for annual projects. The farmers market is held at Echuca's Alton Reserve in Hare St, on the first, third and fifth Saturday of the month and runs from 8 am to noon. For information, phone 0417 597 282. Just across the river is the EchucaMoama Market — the biggest general market in the region. With more than 150 stalls, live entertainment, food vans and a variety of stores, there is something for everyone.

You can even treat yourself to a remedial massage or grab some health care products, or the kids can get involved with the animal petting zoo, face painting or jumping castle. Baked potatoes, gourmet sausages, coffee and pancakes are among the traditional fare available. Acting market manager Dean Zadow said the market had been running for decades and was always a hit with tourists during summer. “We have so many local products on show at the market and the tourists really enjoy items with a point of difference,“ he said.

Fresh produce, plants, art, crafts, clothes, “There is no set date for the market so we always put it on when there are camping gear, phone accessories, events in town. It’s always busy.“ handbags, preserves and wine are just some of the products available to buy. The Moama market is located at

Dates vary but include October 25, November 1 and 22, December 6 and 27, January 1, 3, 10, 24 and February 21.

Children’s clothes, toys, nursery décor, quilts, dolls and baby essentials can be bought at L’il Me. Handmade items, temporary tattoos and jewellery, soaps and candles are also available for parents and children alike.

For information, phone 0408 766 828 or email info@echucamoamamarket. com.au Echuca-Moama mums Kelley Walker and Melanie Pyle started the L’il Me Market in 2014 when they saw a gap in the market for a children’s market. “We noticed there were only a handful of stores in town that cater for both young mums and their children,“ Mrs Walker said. “As young mums, we knew there was a demand for it. The market is held at the Echuca Uniting Church car park from 9 am to 1 pm. Dates vary but include November 7 and December 5. The December market will be a Christmas theme and run for an extra hour. Getting a veteran ready to sTeam The Arbuthnot gets a major overhaul The PS Alexander Arbuthnot is expected to be operational in November. But getting it ‘sea-worthy’ has been no easy task. Owned by Campaspe Shire, the AA has been allocated almost $500 000 to get it back in the water and doing what it does best — take passengers on a journey along the Murray River. Council prosperity general manager Anne Howard said the first thing council had to do was get the boat out of the water and on the Moama slipway. Secondly, council had to find shipwrights to do the work — which, in Echuca’s case, there is no shortage. 16

Then council had to find the funding to support the works.

floors (the timbers that run across the vessel) have been replaced.

Since council introduced its asset renewal funding strategy, the boats have been able to access funds for major works as part of council’s capital works program.

The keelson (like the keel on a traditional boat) and two sister keelsons have also been replaced, removing a lot of the sag in the middle of the boat, while the steel bulkheads and steel frames have either been repaired or rebuilt.

And lastly it was time for the shipwrights to get to work on the 46 tonne and 76-feet long steamer. So what works has council completed on the AA and what is still in the pipeline? Council recognised the boat’s hull was in poor condition during a slipping in 2011. These works have been completed. Most of the hull planking and all the

certificate of survey if the deck was not addressed and without it, AA could not return to commercial service. The engine will also be rebuilt off site. It last received work in about 2002, with only minor maintenance works since then.

Fifty per cent of the deck works are done, while the rest and the engine will be completed while the boat is moored.

Council said while there was no sign that an engine failure was imminent, there was no rigorous way to assess what remaining life the engine had left or when major works might be needed.

The deck had some replacement works in 2011, but, according to council, much of it now has dry rot as it was never properly sealed when restored in the 1970s.

A recent assessment revealed all the linkages and pin points were excessively loose and there was considerable leakage past the pistons and the slide valves.

Officers were not confident Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) would issue a

evidence of galling on the bearing surfaces. According to council, RMS inspected the works on June 15 and indicated it was “very satisfied“ with the progress to date. The AA was built in 1923 at the Arbuthnot Sawmills at Koondrook. It is named after the former owner of the Koondrook sawmills Alexander (Squire) James Cook Arbuthnot and can carry up to 47 passengers with more than 25 000 visitors a year. The AA is one of three steamers owned by council, all of which are required to undergo periodic survey and meet regulations to continue compliant operation. This survey occurs out of water on

average every two years. Ms Howard said requirements varied for each paddlesteamer. “This is due to a number of factors, including size, type of hull material (wood or steel), age, use and so on,“ she said. “Council uses qualified and experienced shipwrights to check over, assess and detail works required. Passing on the baton of potential Echuca-Moama Relay For Life October 24–25

Where: Moama Recreation Reserve More than 15 teams will converge on Moama for the annual Relay For Life fundraiser on October 24–25. Teams will set off at 4 pm on the Saturday and circle Moama Recreation Reserve until 10 am the next day in a kaleidoscope of colour, laughter and festivity. Raising money for the Cancer Council, Relay For Life is a chance for communities to recognise and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, as well as the

people who care for them. Relay also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memory of loved ones lost to cancer. Echuca-Moama Relay For Life committee chair Cathy Carne said Relay For Life was a special event where people came together to honour and remember those who had lost their fight or were fighting cancer.

“Everyone is welcome to participate as cancer doesn’t discriminate,” she said. “People choose to be a part of relay for different reasons. They may be remembering a lost loved one, how proud they are to have survived cancer and some do it to show how strong they are to beat it. “It’s a really bonding day for everyone. That common cause uniting people.”

Entertainment will be provided by district artists, while activities will include face and nail painting, jumping castle, tennis and Auskick, as well as science, yoga and fitness sessions. There will also be a massage tent and Bunnings tent set up. For information, phone Mrs Carne on 0427 832 295 or visit www.relayforlife.org.au >>

The evolving Moama Echuca Botanic Gardens are well worth a visit while you are in town.

Go digging for our hidden gems Echuca-Moama is an ideal tourist destination — with great food and wine spots, plenty for children to see and do, a rich history that echoes through the walls of the port and the beauty that is the Murray River. Among the usual Echuca-Moama to-do items include a trip on a paddlesteamer, a stroll down the port precinct, a canoe down the river and sip of our wonderful wines. But there is so much more to do. Do not forget a ski lesson from Brett Sands, a taste of traditional lollies 24

from Echuca Heritage Sweet Co and a paintball battle. Or an old-fashioned bowling session at King Pin Bowl, a game of mini-golf or trail ride at Billabong Ranch. Take some time out and pop in to the selection of art galleries in town, visit the Holden Motor Museum, Echuca Historical Society Museum or Lockington Heritage Complex. The Great Aussie Beer Shed houses more than 16 000 beer cans from Australia and around the world, while you can pick your own fruit at The Big Strawberry.

But what the real locals do is take advantage of the region’s natural attractions; think grass tennis courts, Moama wetlands and the botanic gardens. The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre is always the first port of call for visitors. And Visitor Information Centre manager Karen Colvin said it was always the natural beauty of the river that attracted visitors most. “Moama wharf would be an attraction that does not get highlighted enough,“ she said.

“The boardwalk down from Horseshoe Lagoon goes over the wetlands and is simply stunning. “It’s a great thing to do with the family and a good way to see nature up close.“ The Moama Botanic Gardens is located at Moama Recreation Reserve, next to the Moama Adventure Playpark, sporting fields and Moama Sports Club. Visitors can enjoy a rain garden, rock seating walls, indigenous plantings and gravel and lawn areas. For the cycling enthusiasts, you must check out Moama Five Mile mountain >>

>> bike venue, in Murray Valley National Park. Moama Five Mile also has a picnic area with easy access and plenty of parking for cars and boat trailers, while it is an ideal spot to launch a boat, kayak or canoe. Torrumbarry Weir is the perfect riverside picnic area with historical features speckled throughout, while Picnic Point near Mathoura has a host of sculptures spread across its expansive grounds. Ms Colvin said the ghost town of Whroo, near Rushworth, was an abandoned attraction with many stories to tell. “It was an old mining village so there is an old open-cut mining tunnel and a cemetery,“ she said. “But as eerie as it is, it’s also quite beautiful and intriguing.“ Scenic Drive near Victoria Park is a beautiful spot for retreating or exercising, with plenty of running tracks, a boat ramp and sprawling garden area. The most popular local secret is Moama beach, located just under the EchucaMoama bridge (to the left if heading to Moama). The sand banks replicate that of a real beach and dozens of people can be seen taking advantage of the swimming hole during summer.

Ski Race

The familiar buzz of speedboats will return to Echuca-Moama for the 51st annual Southern 80 Ski Race between February 12 and 14 next year. The two-up water ski race takes place on the Murray River and competitors will cover the 80-mile stretch between Torrumbarry and Echuca which also features more than 120 bends in that part of the river. As per usual, the race is expected to attract more than 500 entries from across Australia with international representation from New Zealand, Great Britain and the US which helps bring thousands of spectators to the twin towns. Competitors will be spread across a number of classes from tadpoles to superclass — keep an

eye out for last year’s superclass champion and record holder Hellrazor. The Southern 80 is arguably Echuca-Moama’s biggest event and it does not just involve on-water action but also features a heritage boat display at the Victoria Park boat ramp. “The Southern 80 is the event that everyone wants to compete in and win,“ Moama Water Sports Club secretary Betty McCoomb said. “It is definitely the ski racing equivalent of Bathurst.“ For information, visit www.southern80.com.au

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang  October 23–31

Where: Paramount Theatre ECHUCA-MOAMA Theatre Company is preparing for its second theatre production this year, with the stage show adaptation of a blast from the past. Fresh off the success of Hairspray earlier this year, the cast and crew will present Victoria’s first non-professional production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The show promises to be entertaining for children and adults with its cheerful music, comedy duos and traditional costumers.

“We are having a great time putting it together and we hope the audience will come along and have an even better time watching it,“ she said. The show runs from October 23 to 31 at the Paramount Theatre in High St, Echuca.

“There are a few surprises in store for the audience,“ director Lesley Summers said.

Tickets are $39 for adults and $33 for concession-holders, available to buy at the theatre.

“It is a great story which has been loved for a long time and people just remember it. It brings back your childhood a bit.

There will be a matinee at 2 pm both Saturdays and the first Sunday, with evening sessions at 7.30 pm Thursdays to Saturdays.

“You say to people you are doing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and they go, ‘Oh, I loved that film when I was a kid — I will definitely be coming to see it’.“ Set in the 1910s, the musical focuses on a down-on-his-luck inventor who transforms his broken-down car for his children. It is then used on a magical fantasy adventure to save the children’s grandfather in a faraway land. Ms Summers encouraged people to grab a ticket and attend the show.

Massive Murray Paddle

November 25–29

Where: Murray River What is massive? An elephant? The expanse of the London Underground tube train system? The depth of Arizona’s Grand Canyon? The surface of Enceladus, the sixth-largest moon of Saturn? How about the annual Massive Murray Paddle? Formerly the Murray Marathon, it will have its final year in 2015 under the organisation of the YMCA. But it remains the biggest paddle for anyone to enter in the southern hemisphere. All five days of it — from

Yarrawonga to Swan Hill over 404 km. The paddle runs between November 25 and 29 and began back in 1969. That’s 47 years of river roaming. You can use a canoe, paddleboard or kayak.

“The event is incredible and attracts so many passionate — and some of the toughest — people I’ve never met,“ YMCA Victoria’s regional development manager Leon Newton said.

Seven of those years have been overseen by the YMCA. The previous 40 ran under the auspices of Australia’s Red Cross organisation.

Over the past seven years of YMCA management, close to $350 000 has been raised for investment in Murray River communities.

At present, the paddle involves close to 1000 on-water travellers and more than 2000 volunteers and support staff. At least 250 have chosen to be part of this year’s paddle already.

However, it is hardly a paddle. It is really an adventure and a chance to get close to the nation’s beautiful river regions.

yourself. Or why not try a team entry? Or consider one or three days on the water instead. A novice and a canoe veteran can all find a way to be there, with categories for junior paddlers, too. The reduced distance versions start on November 27 at Picnic Point (214 km) and any nominated day for a single paddle (varying from 63 km to 93 km).

Last year's Port to Port Bike Race.

Port to Port Cycling November 7 and 8

Where: Mildura to Echuca If you’ve never entered the Port to Port cycling event before, you need to remember a few things before you hit the road. And not just the road rules. There’s another unwritten rule that goes along with Port to Port. It isn’t a cycling race. It is simply a chance to enjoy a ride. And a ride for a good cause or two, too. Individuals or teams can be sponsored to support a charity of their choice. The Port To Port ride is on this year over the weekend of November 7 and 8. Traditionally taking place following the Melbourne Cup, it starts in Mildura before running to Echuca, via Swan Hill. The entire course covers 400 km and takes in vineyards and national parks. If you’re fit enough, take on the

entire distance yourself. If you’re more of a social rider, it can be covered as a relay instead. The riding contingent starts its run from Mildura’s port at 7 am on day one and arrives at Echuca’s port at 3 pm on day two. The first day travels the Calder Highway to include Hattach, Wemen and Boundary Bend before the evening gathering at Swan Hill. Then it’s onto the Murray Valley Highway on the second day in the direction of Kerang and Cohuna on the way to Echuca. For those who make it that far, there’s even a complimentary massage. Safe boating on NSW waterways Boating is regulated by state governments, so different laws apply in different states. When it comes to the Murray River, which borders Victoria and New South Wales, the laws of NSW apply.

Wear a lifejacket Children under 12 years are required to wear a lifejacket at all times in a vessel under 4.8m, and when in an open area of a vessel 4.8m to 8m that is underway.

WEAR A LIFEJACK ET

• On vessels less than 4.8m, including canoes and kayaks, everyone must wear a lifejacket when boating at night or when boating alone. • Inflatable lifejackets need to be serviced in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations or at a minimum of 12 monthly intervals. These are only some examples of the lifejacket wearing requirements on NSW waterways, including the Murray River. For more information visit rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime

When towing or wake surfing • You must have an observer onboard who is responsible for observing the towed people and reporting all matters affecting them to the master, including vessels approaching from behind. The observer must be at least 16 years of age or hold a boat driving licence, must not be under the influence of alcohol or a drug, and should be familiar with the standard hand signals. • Consider the impact of your vessel’s wash on other people and the environment, ensuring your wash does not have a dangerous, damaging or unreasonable impact.

Alcohol and drug offences

Safety on houseboats

Breath testing, including random breath testing (RBT), can be conducted on the operator of a vessel while it is underway, including drifting. Permissible concentration of alcohol limits are as follows:

When you hire a houseboat you will be advised how many people are legally allowed on the vessel at any one time, whether underway or moored. The maximum number on any houseboat is 12, but this could be less depending on the size of the vessel.

0.00 for recreational vessel operators aged under 18 years

less than 0.05 for recreational vessel operators over 18 years

If you exceed the maximum number of people you may affect the buoyancy of the vessel and cause it to capsize.

The operator of a vessel includes anyone steering or exercising control over its course or direction, and includes the observer in a ski boat or PWC and anyone being towed.

Never jump from houseboats. It is an offence and you could hit unseen snags in the water, or slip and hit the edge of the boat.

less than 0.02 for commercial vessel operators

Organisers of the Epicentre EchucaMoama Christmas Spectacular are promising this year’s event will be bigger and brighter than ever. The free annual event will take place on December 13 at Moama Recreation Reserve, with several impressive regional artists, including Tyler Hudson and Benny Walker, and the ever-popular Christmas carols. Narelle Smythe, one of the organisers, said it was shaping up to be a fantastic event. “As well as being an inclusive and accessible occasion for everyone in the community, it promotes regional talent, which I think is important,” she said. “It’s a family event that both young and old can enjoy.” The festival runs from 6 pm to 7.30 pm and features a kids carnival, animal farm, giveaways and prizes and lolly bags for the kids, with food and drink available. The spectacular runs from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm. Get your Santa hat on for a night of Christmas carols, live artwork and dance, special guest performances and a massive fireworks display. Where: Girgarre hall

An old-time theme and special anniversary celebrations will be among the highlights of the 10th Girgarre Moosic Muster in January. A decade since the event began as three musicians playing on hay bales at the local farmers’ market, it now attracts more than 1500 music lovers and top-level musicians from city and country. The muster offers bluegrass, folk, blues, country, pop, gospel and contemporary music, public concerts on two stages, open mike sessions, more than 30 workshops, continuous jamming and free instrument loans. Workshops are expected to cover guitar, banjo, dobro, mandolin, ukulele, harmonica, percussion, double bass, violin, different playing styles, harmony singing, song writing,

performance skills, poetry and flat foot dancing. For muster director and co-founder Jan Smith, the continual growth of the muster is a source of pride she attributes to her passionate supporters. “Everyone is a volunteer and gets involved because they just love the music and the fun it brings,“ she said. “This anniversary event is going to be a celebration of what you can achieve in a country community with friendliness, support and hard work.“ For information, visit the website at www.girgarre.com.au

Make sure — and its fish

More than 50 years of regulation has taken its toll by reversing the natural flow patterns along the Campaspe River. The iconic river red gums along the Campaspe’s banks, many of which have been there since pre-European settlement, are stressed.

Native fish, reptile and mammal numbers have declined, and vegetation has become stressed. The Millennium Drought also hit the river hard.

The scarcity of natural and irrigation flows resulted in pooling and, in some stretches, the river running dry. In more recent years, low flows resulted in a black water event in 2007, which killed fish and crustaceans. Then the record 2010–11 floods decimated a lot of fringing and >>

>> instream vegetation in the Campaspe, habitat and nourishment that is vital for the food chain. But since 2013, the North Central Catchment Management Authority has helped deliver a new environmental water entitlement.

Dr Melody Serena of the Australian Platypus Conservancy has been working with river management to bring the Campaspe’s native population back to life.

“We started managing environmental flows to the river in 2005, but it has only been in the past three years we have been able to introduce the range of much needed flows for the river,” NCCMA program delivery executive manager Emer Campbell said. “During the drought we tried to keep alive what we could. It was a real challenge. From 2013 onwards we have been able to focus on high and base flows, helping the river recover from drought and flood, and building resilience for the future.” Environmental flows have had a strong impact. Since 2013, monitoring has unveiled a significant increase in the health of the river. Fish numbers and variety are always good indications of river health, and recent surveys along the Campaspe have revealed impressive results. “One standout is the Murray-Darling rainbowfish. They haven’t been recorded in the system for more than 80 years and they are there now,” Ms Campbell said. “Another success story is the dwarf flathead gudgeon. It was found in the Campaspe for the first time ever this

year. This fish was only recorded in nine of 351 sites across the entire Lower Murray system. “This is really exciting news. And we hope the numbers increase in next year’s survey. There are also strong populations of other small-bodied fish like carp gudgeon, flathead gudgeon and the Australian smelt in the river. The presence of these small fish indicates a river that is getting healthier.” Recreational anglers are also benefitting from environmental flows,

regularly catching fish such as the golden perch and iconic Murray cod. “Anglers are telling us they are very happy with the numbers of fish they are catching in the Campaspe,” Ms Campbell said. “The fact that they are reporting these catches, especially the Murray cod, is a good sign numbers are strong.” Environmental flows have also been pivotal in the re-emergence of reptiles and mammals.

“The Murray River turtle has been recorded in the Campaspe for the first time, both adults and juveniles,” Ms Campbell said. “We have also worked hard to protect our platypus population. There are very few platypuses downstream of Echuca in the Murray River. The Campaspe is a very important source of juvenile platypus and we need to provide the right conditions for them to breed in the Campaspe and migrate to the Murray and recolonise.”

The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 12-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish and chips.

Fish in a Flash uses only premium Australian fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

Mathoura, Barham and Deniliquin. “It is one of those rare driving trails which actually has something for everyone,“ Mr Hearn said. “There are 19 interpretive panels along the way to interest those who are intrigued by the local history, while there is also something for the foodies who just want to go and purchase top quality food which has been grown on the land. >>

Outback art is a feature of the discovery trail. 64

>> “They can see the avocado trees where the avocado in their hand comes from, or they can drink wine made from grapes when they are sitting and looking at the vines themselves.“ The Long Paddock Touring Route follows the Cobb Highway from EchucaMoama through to Wilcannia and leads to the iconic outback towns of Bourke, Broken Hill and White Cliffs. With 47 interpretive panels bringing the stories of the region to life, this awardwinning route has proven popular with travellers since it was set up in 2006. It crosses five major rivers — the Murray, Darling, Murrumbidgee, Lachlan and Edward — and has seven sculptures set up along the route. “We like to say those artworks form the biggest art gallery in the world because you have to travel 610 km to see the whole collection,“ project manager Alison McLean said. “It is a really unique part of Australia, but it also has this enticing aspect to it. There is a deep and rich history which we have been able to package up for people to experience as they are driving along.“ For information about these rails on our doorstep, visit www.backroadstrail.com.au or www.thelongpaddock.com.au

Since it was rebuilt in 2011, the stateof-the-art facility has grown to become one of the premier skate parks in the region.

Although skate parks are sometimes seen as a daunting place to take children, Ms Chapman said it was not the case at Moama.

Its position next to Kerrabee Soundshell is in a prime location and allows easy access.

“There is a good atmosphere at the park and it is really welcoming to children and people of all ages,“ she said.

Shop ’til you drop

Don’t forget to take the kids.

Echuca’s Hare St market day ahead of November’s Melbourne Cup will kick off a busy retail season for Echuca-Moama traders which builds momentum up to Christmas and continues until the end of the summer.

Business and Trade Association president Andrew Lochhead said the market day promotion was an annual event which drew plenty of shoppers from throughout the district and further afield. “There are a lot of people who take the Monday after coming up from Melbourne for the weekend,“ Mr Lochhead said. The association will close off Hare St between 7.30 am and 4 pm on Monday, November 2, allowing retailers to set

up street stalls and stage activities for the kids that will keep them busy while mum and dad shop. “The mini bike demonstration will be back with the riders doing jumps and tricks and we’re still to finalise the other kids’ activities,“ Mr Lochhead said. He said the weekend marked the start of the major summer period for retailers, with visitors often staying in town for the Melbourne Cup race meeting held at Echuca on November 3.

“After AFL grand final weekend it gets busier with people coming up here from Melbourne because they don’t have any sporting activities,“ he said. “There are plenty of people about right up until Christmas and the town is

vibrant throughout the holiday break.“ Mr Lochhead said the association had a committee of four members, who were all busy running their own businesses, as well as playing their role in the small organisation.

But he said retailers were keen to ensure they benefited from a retail period that was as much about encouraging visitors to shop for clothes, gifts and other goods, as well as spending money on accommodation, food and entertainment.

“In my own experience, I know I often buy a lot when I am on holidays,“ Mr Lochhead said. “You are not under a time pressure and shopping is a pleasant part of the holiday experience.“

Just down the road Your journey doesn’t have to end at the town limits. You’ll find plenty to see and do in Echuca-Moama’s surrounding towns. Rochester 23mins from Echuca Rochester was home to Sir Hubert (Oppy) Opperman, legendary cyclist and later politician, whose statue off the main street is a popular stopping point for tourists. The Opperman Sports Museum is situated in the Shire Service Centre next to the Rochester Shire Hall in Mackay street. The museum contains personal memorabilia from Oppy’s sporting and political life including many photos, certificates, awards, trophies and the bike he rode over the last years of his life. Several panels have now been installed showing the various sporting clubs and individuals who have contributed to Rochester’s sporting history.  A heritage walk from the main bridge to the red brick bridge takes in the old saleyards bull ring, the old water tower and shire hall, while the western bank of the Campaspe River has been set aside as a passive recreation reserve. Rochester Historical Society has its headquarter in Rochester’s second public school building, which was built on the High St site in 1874. Campaspe Weir can be reached by travelling south on the Northern Hwy toward Elmore and turning left on to a gravel road after 9 km.

Tongala 21mins from Echuca Tongala district was settled by squatters in the 1840s. Irrigation subsequently ensured the success of an intensive dairying industry. In Tongala, a series of murals depict the evolution of the dairy industry and groundwater issues. Other murals give an insight into the armed forces, while a monument pays tribute to the Australian Light Horse, and an avenue

of honour recalls those who lost their life in the Armoured Corp in Vietnam.

Lockington 33mins from Echuca Lockington is a small country town set in irrigated dairy farming country. Visitors can enjoy a picnic in the landscaped park areas, take a walk following the self-guided heritage walk or choose a route past the mural in the pavilion, the rose garden and Lions flower clock. Bring the fountain to life in the lagoon area and keep your eyes open for the Locky Ness monster. On Sunday afternoons (or by appointment) call in to Lockington and District Living Heritage Complex for a trip down memory lane, while enjoying friendly hospitality.

Rushworth 53mins from Echuca At Rushworth’s fire lookout at Growlers Hill, the view covers the historic gold mining town, Waranga Reservoir, Rushworth Forest and the Goulburn Valley. The 24 300 ha box ironbark forest is the largest of its type in Victoria, areas of it covering evidence of the district’s early mining activity. But Rushworth’s history is well preserved at the town’s museum, while historic buildings also remain the heart of the town. Waranga Basin, to the north-east of the town, is a tourist drawcard in the region, providing opportunities for boating, fishing and camping, while south of Rushworth is Whroo Historic Reserve, which represents the remnants of what was once a thriving gold mining town of 1000 people and 139 buildings.

WHAT'S ON – Spring–Summer 2015–16

Barmah 31 km from Echuca Barmah is the gateway to the World Heritage listed Barmah State Forest which, with the Moira State Park, forms the largest red gum forest in the world. A forest drive from Barmah heads off along River Rd, which is two-wheel drive friendly, but dusty when dry. Kingfisher Wetland Cruises allows people to see the ecology and history of the forest, with some trees estimated to be more than 300 years old and more than 40 m high, the birdlife and its habitats and the Aboriginal significance of the area.

Pyramid Hill 55mins from Echuca Pyramid Hill is named after the adjacent granite hill with its many interesting rock formations. A cairn on the southern slopes commemorates the explorer, Major Sir Thomas Mitchell, who discovered and named the area in 1836 during his journey into Australia Felix. In spring many varieties of rare wildflowers may be found blooming among the rocks. Other interesting places to visit in the area include Terrick Terrick National Park and Mt Hope, as well as the town’s museum. Terrick Terrick National Park is 20 km south-east of the town and supports more than 200 species of native flora, including many rare and threatened species. Scenic drives take visitors to grasslands, granite outcrops, eucalypt woodlands and historical farming sites.

importance. Kow Swamp, a few kilometres away, is rich in bird and fish life and is water storage for the Torrumbarry irrigation scheme. A picnic area is on the east side of the lake is complete with swimming area, toilets and barbecue facilities. More barbecue facilities are available at the north end of the swamp, an area commonly used for fishing.

Torrumbarry 19mins from Echuca Torrumbarry offers a camping ground, picnic area, fish ladder and a heritage display and information centre at the weir. A lock operates at the weir, allowing passage for boats travelling up and down the Murray. The original weir was replaced in 1996, but major parts have been preserved of the original steel trestles, which were winched out of the river in times of flood.

Gunbower 29mins from Echuca Gunbower is a gateway to possibly Australia’s largest inland island and a significant wildlife sanctuary, Gunbower Island. The island is home to protected populations of kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes and 160 different species of birds. It is an idyllic location for camping, canoeing and a spot of bushwalking or bird watching. The running of the Gunbower Gold Cup in October is a picnic race day out for all the family.
