Mud Larking on Lake Mulwala

LAKE MULWALA DRAWDOWN The drawdown of Lake Mulwala commenced in the last week of April and will continue in stages to as much as 3.5 metres in order to help a few agencies with maintenance work that needs to be done on the weir and along the foreshore. It is also in a bid to utilize winter frost to help control the exposed Egeria beds, commonly known as dense water weed. The lake will be back to its full capacity by mid-August in time for the irrigation season. Take this great photo opportunity to take a scenic flight to view the lake whilst lowered.

Purchase your Allegro Theatre tickets for ‘Fame the Musical’ from Yarrawonga Mulwala Visitor Information Centre along with Bubbles Winery Tour which operates weekly on Wednesdays. Book a tour guide for your town bus tour with one of our friendly staff members or let us organise a Farm Gate Trail bus tour for your group. Ask us about our winter accommodation specials.

Falls Creek – it’s your mountain

W

inter is almost upon us and that means Falls Creek is gearing up for another exciting snow season. In 2015 there are plenty of reasons to make Falls Creek your mountain - whether out on the slopes, on the trails, in the restaurants or at the lodge. There is something about Falls that keeps visitors coming back for more, especially those from the North EastMurray region. There are unique things you may not know about Falls Creek. For instance, it is the only place in Australia where you can drive your own snowmobile, ride a snow bike on a ski trail and see a sled dog event under village lights at night. It’s also the only true ski-in, skiout village in the country. There is no closer feeling to a romantic European-style resort, the best part is skiing from the slopes right to the door of any property in the village. Nobody wants the same old and Falls Creek prides itself on bringing

new activities to add to the old classics. In 2015 the Snowplay Park has had a facelift and will offer more fun than ever (especially with its kid’s snowmobiles) and the snowshoe

trails will open more routes thanks to the new mountain bike trail network at the resort. A bit further out, Back-Country Tours with Steve Lee are set to be a hit once again and Australia’s best

John Gehrig Wines

Winemaker Ross Gehrig.

J

ohn Gehrig established the vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976 - only minutes from the Milawa Gourment Region In 2011 the business expanded to a new vineyard and cellar door site in Gooramadda (Rutherglen), ironically with the family’s long wine making history, very close to John’s birthplace. One of the four siblings of the late John and Elizabeth, Ross Gehrig, is now the fifth generation winemaker at this iconic north-east Victorian winery. Since completing his Bachelor of Wine Science at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, Ross has worked several vintages in Europe (Alsace

and Burgundy) and even Israel. Together with wife Meghan he continues the vision that his parents had while adding his own special touches to it. While conscious of family history, Ross is reluctant to claim that John Gehrig Wines is Victoria’s oldest winemaking family saying that it’s “one of the oldest, give or take a year or two”. Nor does he claim his position ‘as of right’ and when asked how he ended up in the family business he laughs and says “probably stupidity” before adding in his very frank style “and a competitiveness probably to be better than my old man”. With a wide variety of quality wines to choose from like sparkling, whites, reds and fortified, why not come down to the cellar doors and enjoy a tasting? From family favourites like Riesling and Pinot Noir to unusual varieties like Chenin Blanc and Gamay, and of course who could pass on a great fortified wine this winter. So warm up with a visit to John Gehrig Wines at 1326 Goormadda Road, Rutherglen or 80 Gehrigs Lane, Oxley.

ll of us have a special place, a place we think of as entirely our own. It’s a place we return to time and time again and is at the forefront of our minds when we plan a quick weekend getaway. We recommend this place to our family and friends, knowing they will be met with the same whole-hearted welcome that you receive every time you visit. In a testament to the property’s favour with its guest, Lindenwarrah was recently voted by guests in Luxury Travel’s coveted Gold List Awards as #5 Best Australian Hotel, Resort Villa or Lodge, #5 Best Australian Property within Driving Distance of a Capital City and for all of you

incurable romantics out there, #8 Best Australian Romantic Property, too. So why not come and see what this special place is like, it might just become your own special place too.

Ward off winter chills I

t is well known that honey comforts a sore throat. In fact studies have shown that store bought cough syrup is no more effective than a teaspoon of honey at soothing the discomfort brought on by a cold. So as you make your way to the mountains for this winter spare a moment to stop off at Walkabout Apiaries to grab a jar of their allnatural honey. While you’re visiting make a point of asking to taste their traditional spiced mead. Warm it up and get cosy by the fire, it’s the ideal drink for relaxing after a long day on the slopes.

There are plenty of reasons to come and visit Pfeiffer Wines this winter. What will yours be? We look forward to welcoming you to the Gourmet Traveller Wine's Star Cellar Door in Rutherglen.

Pfeiffer Wines is a five-star, family owned winery that produces a diverse range of award-winning premium wines. The historic cellars and century-old timber bridge are situated in a tranquil, natural setting on the banks of Sunday Creek – an anabranch of the Murray River. Pfeiffer Wines is open 7 days a week. Tastings are complimentary and visitors are always made very welcome. To truly enjoy the idyllic setting, visitors are encouraged to choose their “pfavorite” bottle of Pfeiffer wine and enjoy it with a gourmet picnic hamper on the historic timber bridge overlooking Sunday Creek – a truly unique Australian experience.

n life, you are either a pilot or a passenger - it’s your choice with Yarrawonga Flight Training. You can learn to fly, or you can have a Trial Introductory Flight (TIF) and get the feel of flying in a modern, open cockpit aircraft, over the picturesque landscape around Yarrawonga and Mulwala. This winter the authorities are lowering Lake Mulwala to control some of the weed. So you have the opportunity of seeing the Murray River as it has developed over hundreds of years before Lake Mulwala was created to control the flow and reduce flooding downstream, as well as to

om

assist irrigation. History is brought alive before your very eyes and the only way to appreciate it thoroughly is by flying over it. The lake is only lowered approximately every five years, so make the most of the 2015 winter season to experience it. Combined with the lush green pastures and new crops, Lake Mulwala is a great reason to rug up and come fly with us at Yarrawonga Flight Training from Hangar 19, 31-33 John Duigan Drive on Yarrawonga Aerodrome. President of the Barooga Advancement Group Darrell Bowden said “we know that we can get pretty good coffee around the towns but we want Finley, Berrigan, Barooga and Tocumwal to be known for exceptional coffee that visitors talk about”. “The important element to the

training was that was our local cafes were the classroom,” said Café owner and participant Rowan O’Neill. “We tried the techniques on our own equipment and with our own coffee so we knew exactly what we were dealing with.” So try a coffee in a café in Berrigan Shire.

The second genereation winemaker is Terry Monichino who, together with his sister Anna own and operate the Monichino winery and estate. veryone’s favourite family destination, Kyabram Fauna Park, is ready to welcome visitors this winter. The cooler weather may see the lizards snuggle up in hibernation, but the rest of the Kyabram Fauna Park animal family are still out and about and look forward to meeting new friends. Call in this and see one of the park favourites, Heidi the Koala. This beautiful bundle of fur is growing up quickly and remains one of the park’s most popular residents. She’s giving brothers Kendi and Kay a run for their money, as this feisty little lass demands attention, and Heidi will feature in the Kyabram Fauna Park Koala Enclosure throughout the cooler months. The enclosure gives visitors a chance to observe the animals as they amble through their busy day – a fantastic wildlife experience. Don’t forget to call in and say hello to the beautiful pink cockatoos. Their feathery coat keeps them nice and warm and resident favourites Rose and Floyd are ready to welcome guests to their walk-through aviary home. And if you’re lucky, these two blushing beauties might even pose for a photograph or two.
