The library is also a great place to head to on a chilly day and who knows that might coincide with a great display, rhyme time or one of the many events held regularly in this great facility. While it may be cold outside the river and the bush come into their own over winter and there is nothing better than a day spent enjoying the scenery with a warming campfire and some gooey marshmallows. The wineries take on a special ambience as the wood fires get cranked up, the great food comes out and the rich reds get uncorked, what better way to while away a chilly day. Speaking of food the best local chefs will go head to head at the Great Taste of Echuca Moama. Six chefs, six courses and only one

The ever popular Winter Blues Festival is on again in July. As the sounds of blues music resonates through the town and thousands of people converge, the weather will be forgotten as people spill out onto the streets and dance the day and night away over this four-day event. As the cold weather gives way to the warmth of spring we have the Elmore Field Days to to look forward to. This is one of the biggest agricultural events in Australia and with so much on show, it’s hard to see it all. One of the features of this special event is the AgArt Wear competition that is full of designer gowns, made from rubbish, farm scraps, wood, iron or steel. There always seems to be something on the go in the Echuca-Moama region, enjoy your stay and make sure it’s a safe and fun one.

There is plenty to see and do at The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre.
Just waiting for you to discover Winter and Spring is the perfect time to enjoy the wonderful heritage and history of the Echuca-Moama region and The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre is a great starting point for this wonderful place of ours. The Discovery Centre is a “must see” as it transports you back to the 1860s and explores the events and individuals who provided the foundation for what is Echuca-Moama today. Of course a visit to the Discovery Centre, steam display, the sawmill and the magnificent historic wharf would not be complete without a trip on one of our magnificent paddlesteamers.
Who knows you may just meet some of our Living Legends. An historic town walking tour or port after dark tour will give you the story behind some of our past legends as well as some of the dark secrets of days long gone.
Check out Kingfisher Cruises (Barmah) or the Kyabram Fauna Park for a nature-based experience. Of course one of the highlights during July is the annual Winter Blues Festival, to be held July 28, 29, 30 and 31, and recognised as one of Australia’s best blues festivals.
But it’s not all about history and heritage. Wonderful day trips on the Backroads Trail, the Gold and Iron Bark Trail or parts of the Long Paddock Touring Route will connect you with many of the smaller towns and communities in our region and allow you to enjoy the special experiences on offer.
With more than 40 artists at 30 plus venues around Echuca-Moama it is sure to be another great weekend. In October the region plays host to the world famous Deni Ute Muster and the Elmore Field Days, reinforcing our reputation as a major events destination.
The friendly staff at the visitor information centre can provide you with more details on all our regional attractions and events. More than 40 artists will be playing on 30 stages across the twin town, which will have no trouble entertaining the large crowd that is expected to flock to Echuca-Moama. The festival has been extended this year with entertainment to begin for the first time on Thursday night.
Brian Watts and Ray Clifford of ‘Ray & the B-Train’ entertained the masses at the Homegrown stage at the Port of Echuca last year.
Organiser Peter Williams said people can choose to sit in one venue or they can move around and see what is going on across the town.
“That is the beauty of the festival. It is up to you to decide where and when you want to go and it’s free of charge of course,” Peter said. “The festival simply allows visitors to walk from venue to venue in a safe environment,” he said. The festival is the second biggest event in town and attracts around 16,000 visitors, some from as far afield as New Zealand, Sydney and South Australia. “We deliberately turnover our artists each year to keep the line-up fresh, but there are also the regulars and crowd favourites people come back year after year to see. “Our reputation is getting out there now. We have Tourism Victoria on board to support us this year, as well as the Moama Bowling Club, so the Winter Blues is going to keep growing, and get bigger and better.”

Built at Arbuthnot’s Koondrook Sawmill in 1923, the “AA” was the last steamer built on the Murray during the riverboat trade. She was brought to Echuca in 1989 where a full restoration began.
Time to limber up before tackling the 2015 Sweat vs Steam run at Hopwood Gardens.
This off-road race has become a permanent fixture in the racing calendar with many people jumping at the opportunity to check their form against paddle power of the famous PS Pevensey paddlesteamer. RUNNERS have the choice of entering two races — 12.5 km or 5 km — which both start and finish in the gardens. Committee member Rhonda Marshall said preparations have been underway for quite some time to ensure this year’s event is even stronger than previous years.
Paddlesteamers, and we are very excited to have the Pevensey on board again for this year.” Participants come from not only Echuca-Moama, but across Victoria and interstate to run against the Pevensey. “The growth of the event has been exceptional and we hope to continually see more and more interstate travellers as well as local groups, schools and individuals come along and make a weekend out of it.”
“We continue to build our great event, to reach our goal of 1000 participants,” Rhonda said. “The growing support for the Sweat vs Steam event in Echuca-Moama is a testament to the local community and to the demonstrated success of the event itself, now in its 19th year,” she said.
Local support from businesses and organisations including Moama Bowling Club, Riverine Herald, Edge 102.5 FM, Fit Mob, Coolabah Turf, Northern Hire Group, Echuca Locksmiths and The American Hotel allows the event to run. Entry costs are $35 for seniors and secondary school participants are $18. Senior section includes open, masters 35–44 and veterans 55+ while there will be a both a primary and secondary school section winner.
“This event allows the YMCA to put more funds back into the community through the Y Foundation grants.
Registrations open July 1 and close October 6.
“This event also wouldn’t run without the support of the Echuca

The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 12-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish and chips.
Fish in a Flash uses only premium Australian fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

Echuca Racing Club >> a weekend of serious music, partying, fun and frivolity. Deni Ute Muster General Manager, Kate Pitt, said this year is a thrilling line up. ‘‘We have the best of the best and to have Keith Urban as our headline artist for our 18th Muster is a wish come true. We really wanted to pull out all stops and come up with a dream line up that our fans would love and we know we’ve delivered an awesome 18th birthday present.’’ Kate said. Music begins at 9 am and plays until 5.30 pm on the day stage, while the main stage kicks off at 6 pm and rocks on until midnight. The muster has it all — around 70 catering sites to feed the army of music fans, three licensed bars and a dedicated wine and cider bar.
The kids haven’t been forgotten either with a circus booked to entertain the little people along with activities in the family centre. Free camping on site is provided along with reserved sites that can be purchased. Elmore Field Days ready to showcase ag industry The latest innovations and techniques in agriculture will again be showcased at this year’s Elmore Field Days from October 4–6. The field days draw a massive crowd and while there is of course the latest and greatest in farming to see, there is also plenty for the not-so-farm minded too — with more than 700 sites there is something for everyone, including great food, live music, exciting guest speakers and demonstrations. This year former North Melbourne footballer and Bali bombing victim Jason McCartney is one of the guest speakers, he will certainly keep the large crowd enthralled. The popular Ag Art Wear Competition is back for its 16th year, with designers again battling it out for top honours for the best garment made from materials found on the farm or land. Maryborough student Jaclyn Holland found the perfect balance of wire, wool, gumnut and paint to claim the 18-andunder section last year, while the winner of the avant garde category was Kuajong Armour by designer Jan Dew.
40

Food will be at the top of the menu as six local chefs battle each other for the chance to be crowned the 2016 Great Taste of Echuca Moama Chef of the Year. All in the name of supporting the Echuca branch of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation. Two-time champion Dave Hollamby from the Cock N Bull, Michael Giarrusso (Junction), Phil Edwards (American Hotel), Dave Bowmen (Café 3564), Cass Wills (MV Mary Ann) and Abu Shebani (Shebanis Taste of the Mediterranean), will go head to head to deliver a degustation menu where your vote determines the overall winner. This year’s Great Taste of Echuca Moama event will be held at The Venue at Moama Bowling Club and will start at 6.30 pm, Saturday, August 6. Tickets are $115 and include a sixcourse degustation dinner together with entertainment from Code One Rock Band. Drinks are available at
bar prices. This is the third year the event has been held and it is gaining in popularity. Last year 270 guests attended, raising $36,000 for the Blue Ribbon Foundation. Organiser Sandi Stanton said the foundation perpetuates the memory of members of Victoria police killed in the line of duty. “While we can do nothing to bring them back, as a grateful community we can take steps to honour their memory and ensure their sacrifice is acknowledged,” Sandi said. It’s a muddy good time It will be a case of a lot of sweat and tears — but hopefully no blood — as athletes battle their way around the course for the annual 2016 Brumby Run on October 29 at Billabong Ranch Echuca. Organiser and ranch owner Kerri Acquisto said people have the opportunity to enter either a 6 km, 8 km or 12 km event and with more than 30 obstacles on the course, it will certainly challenge people with all levels of fitness.
“You don’t have to choose which event you want to enter until the day and you can change your mind even while you are out on the course,” Kerri said. More than 250 people entered the event last year with people travelling from as far afield as Sydney and Melbourne.
Kerri said she saw an opening for an event such as the Brumby Run in Echuca because the closest event was the Mad Cow run in Shepparton, and there just simply aren’t many on the calendar. “We are affiliated with the Obstacle Course Racing League of Victoria and it >>
