DISCOVER THE BEAUTY, IMMERSE YOURSELF IN HISTORY AND DANCE INTO THE NIGHT. THE NEXT EDITION OF WHAT’S ON IS HERE, MAKING THE COOLER MONTHS IGNITE!

It’s that time again, colder and darker and couch cuddling indoor weather, but are you aware that there is still so much on?

This autumn and winter the region has arranged an array of events, ones that will have you flying out the front door of your home to create memories and embark on new adventures.

If you’re into your music, you can groove your way into an ABBA tribute show, head to Barham for four days of non-stop country music or get your toes tapping at the next Winter Blues Festival. For children and the young-at-heart there’s the Snowy and the Seven Cool Dudes stage performance; an interactive stage show where kids in the audience are invited on stage.

Paddle your way through history on an authentic 1900s paddlesteamer down the picturesque Murray River, roll up to a truck display that showcases both new and old, or try your luck with a hole-in-one at a day on the green.

Stay alive with a Bee Gees show, check out an exhibition or two, head to the ballet, delight the whole family with the Moama … Lights or take a walk on a boardwalk, just the camera and you. So, jump off that couch and embrace the cooler weather. There is something for everyone in the region this winter, flick through the pages, as there is even something for you.

Get trackside this winter

This year is no exception.

Echuca Racing Club manager Garry Armstrong said the club would be staging a meeting each month during winter.

“We’ve got a Thursday meeting on June 1 before the July 28 meeting which coincides with the Winter Blues Festival,” Garry said.

The meeting was run for the first time in 2022 and the trackside tunes lured a big crowd to the racecourse.

The event forms a key part of the Echuca-Moama Winter Blues Festival program.

As the races were run and won, three top-shelf acts performed in the pavilion, which offers a magnificent view of the track from an elevated position.

Echuca Racing Club’s stature on the Country Racing Victoria scene is well-entrenched, with the state’s leading stables and jockeys regularly riding at meetings on the border.

Local trainers such as Gwenda Johnstone, Mick

Cornish and Donna Gaskin, Rhys Archard, Daryl Archard, Tim Davies, Mick Newton, John Thomas and Tayne Foster regularly feature at meetings across the district.

Echuca is also home to one of the state’s emerging young apprentice jockeys in Rose Hammond, who shot to statewide prominence by riding a winning double on Cup Day in March.

The track earlier in the year underwent some important renovations.

“The new drainage works have been completed, that

was a $220,000 project,” Garry said. “That is probably the most significant amount of work in one time on the track since 1988.” There have also been a number of other improvements to the facilities of the Echuca Racing Club.

A new building, which contains jockeys’ rooms, stewards’ area, scales area, administration offices and television host set, is scheduled for completion.

Echuca Racing Club caters for racegoers with free shuttle buses available to feature meetings from various pick-up points in Echuca and Moama. For more information visit country.racing.com/ echuca or check out Echuca Racing Club on Facebook.

Full steam ahead to revival event

THE ECHUCA MOAMA STEAM, IRON AND TRADES REVIVAL CELEBRATES AUSTRALIA’S RICH HISTORY AND HERITAGE.

June 10-11 | Echuca
11 What’s On

The event features everything from steam-powered machinery to blacksmithing demonstrations. Hosted by the newly formed Echuca Steam Preservation Society Inc, the event returns to Echuca’s Rotary Park over the King’s Birthday long weekend on June 10 and 11.

The event showcases Australia’s rich history and traditions by highlighting the machinery, vehicles and trades that built our nation, while reflecting on the skills and passions of the people who toiled in the spirit of yesteryear.

Echuca Steam Preservation Society Inc president Ed Gibson has been fascinated with steam engines his whole life.

“We are aiming to host an event with a strong focus on steam, while also showcasing machinery, small engines, working horses and classic vehicles,” Ed said.

“A focus on lost trades will become a feature of the event into the future.

“Our motivation is to provide an event that is equally

as enjoyable for exhibitors and visitors alike with a strong family focus.

“We will be reviving machinery and trades from the past, while incorporating food and music for the whole family to enjoy.”

From 4.30 pm on the Saturday, the displays will wind up for the day with the focus moving to the Event Hub for a food, drink and music gala.

With so much to see and do, this festival is perfect for families, history buffs and anyone who loves a little bit of nostalgia.

Make a beeline to Makers Market

WHO DOESN’T LOVE COUNTRY CRAFTS AND HOME BAKED GOODS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE WITH LOVE?

This is just what you will find at the Echuca Moama Uniting Church’s Winter Makers market.

Echuca Moama Uniting Church fundraising team leader Anne Peace would like to welcome locals and visitors alike to the church’s winter makers market.

“There will be our famous cake stall,” Anne said. “Our members are very, very good at baking.

“They take great delight in cooking all types of sponges, scones and slices, which are all packaged up beautifully and ready to sell.

“There will be plants, plant hangers, local honey, jams and preserves as well.

“Inside the church hall will be stalls with gifts, crafts and our pre-loved bookstore.”

The market will be full of handmade goods, local produce and gifts for everyone, whether you are looking for a little something for yourself or a present for a loved one.

To top it off, because it is the Echuca Moama Uniting Church’s Winter Makers market, the ever popular hot dog stall will be returning.

“The hot dog stall goes really well each winter,” Anne said.

Funds raised through the sale of the hot dogs helps the church in supporting the community.

The church is also a popular music venue with local, national and international musicians holding concerts there.

Upcoming acts include the Savoy Singers, “which are always popular,” Anne said.

The group is performing at the church on Sunday, June 25.

They will be singing works by superstars such as Burt Bacharach, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein.

The church will be filled with the sounds of all the modern classics.

On Sunday, July 16 flautist Katie Kim and pianist Ed Chan will be performing.

They will take the audience on a journey through some of the most popular pieces of music written for the flute and piano.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for both performances.

Echuca Moama Uniting Church Winter Makers Market is on Saturday, June 10 from 9 am to 1 pm.

Kyabram Parkland to host championships

KYABRAM PARKLAND GOLF CLUB IS SET TO HOST THE VICTORIAN PAR THREE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS IN JUNE.

The men’s edition will be the 17th iteration of the event held at Kyabram, while the women’s event will return for the 13th time.

With a unique par three design and elevated greens, the Kyabram Parkland course provides a challenging layout for golfers, and with hole lengths ranging from 124 to 219 metres, the 18 holes are far from a chip and putt course, according to event organiser Naomi Cartwright.

June 3-10 | Kyabram
25 What’s On

“The par three, it’s such a unique course,” Naomi said. “I think people don’t understand when they say it’s par three, people think chip and putt, and it’s definitely not a chip and putt course, and we offer a great golfing experience.”

Played on consecutive weekends in June, the men and women will compete in separate tournaments, with slightly different formats between the two competitions.

“The women’s event is the first weekend in June (3 and 4), and that is a 36-hole competition,” Naomi said. “They play two days, the Saturday and the Sunday, and then the men’s event is the long weekend in June (10 and 11), and that’s a 54-hole competition, playing 36 holes on Saturday and then 18 on Sunday.”

Jazy Roberts won the 2022 women’s competition by three strokes, while Harry Goakes prevailed in the men’s competition after two play-off holes. The fields are capped, with limited entries available across both competitions.

“The men’s capacity is 90, we can only fit 90 men on, and the women’s we have 144 capacity,” Naomi said.

“Numbers dropped a little bit after COVID. Last year was our first one after COVID, and the format sort of changed.

“The women’s event was midweek and then it’s changed to the weekend to cater for all sorts of golfers, the working golfer as such, so we are hoping if we can get up to 80 to 90 women, we will be doing well.”

With “thousands of dollars worth of trophies and goods” available as prizes, keen golfers are encouraged to visit: www. kyabramparklandgc.com.au or phone Naomi Cartwright on 0419 565 797 to enter.

Ozquilt Network coming to Ky

KYABRAM TOWN HALL GALLERY WILL WELCOME THE AUSTRALIA-WIDE EIGHT TOURING EXHIBITION DURING THE MONTHS OF JUNE AND JULY.

Run by the Ozquilt Network, AW8 stands for the eighth Australian-wide bi-annual exhibition showcasing the works of Ozquilt members.

“Each of the quilts on display are a unique creation and design,” Ozquilt Network AW8 subcommittee member Brenda Wood said.

“The Ozquilt Network is an Australian based network of textile artists and art quilters who would like to promote the art quilt as an art form.”

“Many of the artists have an art practice and we use quilts, just like a normal artist would use paint, paintbrushes and pencil.

“We have the added benefit of layering our works, whereas a normal painter can often just put paint on canvas and then be done with it.”

Not having a theme, the exhibition is an open range event for artists allowing them to explore

what inspires them in their own style.

The only limitation is all quilts in the exhibition run at a size of 40 cm x 40 cm.

“It allows the exhibition to look uniform and be a body of work,” Brenda said.

“It is an achievable size for artists, and makes it easy for galleries and exhibitions to hang the works.

“By keeping the quilts small, we don’t have any orientation problems and the galleries know the pieces are going to hang square, rather than landscape.

“And it is a good size to exhibit, to travel and has more of an impact as a uniform size.”

The exhibition includes a work by Kyabram artist Sue Reid with her piece, The door of no return #2, as well as artists from around Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

The Kyabram Town Hall Gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Entry to the gallery is a gold coin donation.

AW8 runs from Friday, June 16 to Saturday, July 29.

Heathcote

Nightmoves trials on track

On Saturday, June 17 the infamous car rally will be welcoming the public in to watch the event at the Heathcote Showgrounds where cars will race around the 150km track.

Nissan Car Club Australia Committee member Aiden Part is eager for this year’s event and said it’s looking to be another good year.

“It’s always been a big event and has been running out of Heathcote for a long time now and always had a lot of support from the local business’ and puts money back in the local economy, seeing as so many people from interstate travel down to do it,” Aiden said.

“It’s such a big event we have four major sponsors with us this year, Forklift Clearance Centre, Windscreen Deals, Palling Bros Brewery

and Fast Track towing, so it’s looking like it will be an exciting event.”

Described as more fun than competitive, Aiden sees the Nightmoves trials as a good opportunity for people to race their cars that you normally wouldn’t see in a modern day car rally.

“There’ll be a lot of heritage-style cars there as well as new ones, so Ford Escorts and Datsun 1600s from the ’70s and ’80s as well as the later turbo 4WD drive cars,” Aiden said.

“Because it’s a hobby sport, most of the people aren’t there to win, they’re there to enjoy themselves.”

People can have a wander before the race to see the cars from 2:30pm to 5:30pm with the rally starting at 5:30pm.

Entry is free and food will be available. | June 17

Snowy and the Seven Cool Dudes to hit the stage

SNOWY AND THE SEVEN COOL DUDES IS AN INTERACTIVE TAKE ON THE CLASSIC SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS.

Playing at the Echuca Paramount on Saturday, July 1, the pantomime has a modern twist with a friendlier message than the original.

“Snowy and the Seven Cool Dudes is a fractured fairytale with a modern day twist,” producer Alli Pope said.

“(It’s) based on the original Snow White, but (it’s) much more friendly than the old story.

“If you know the old story, it wasn’t that friendly.”

In this version, Snowy is becoming more beautiful every day and the Wicked Queen is not happy.

On the queen’s orders the Hunter takes Snowy into the forest and leaves her there forever.

Meanwhile, the cool dudes start making healthier food choices and exercising.

“Our seven cool dudes are all rappers, and they have their own personal trainer,” Alli said.

“We actually choose kids out of the audience to come up and be those rappers.”

“Thrown out to the audience is, ‘What’s a healthy food choice?’

“And the kids will go, ‘bananas, rockmelon’, shouting out all these fun things.

“Then the rappers will use that in the show.”

During this interactive production, kids in the audience will be invited on stage to become a variety of characters including the cool dudes.

The show is written for ages three to 11, as well as being enjoyable for big kids, mums, dads and all the family.

Snowy and the Seven Cool Dudes is on at the Echuca Paramount Theatre Saturday, July 1 at 10.30 am.

“We are really looking forward to being there for the first time.

“You get there and you instantly get a feel of what the town is about.”

Expect dancing, shimming, crowds singing along and foot stomping at every venue at festival. Support the festival by heading into town on the weekend of July 27 to 30, buying a drink or two, having a meal, and getting down to the sound of the blues.

Johnno’s Run turns 10

FOLLOWING A RECORD-BREAKING EVENT IN 2022, JOHNNO’S RUN RETURNS FOR THE 10TH YEAR ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 6.

The Community Living and Respite Service’s funrun is once again raising funds for the Open Doors Project, which is dedicated to building homes for people with a disability.

Participants can run, walk, or wheel along the picturesque Echuca-Moama course and will once again feature races spanning 5, 10, and 21 kilometres in what has become a much-loved event. And it’s all for a good cause.

“We’re again looking forward to as many people as possible participating,” CLRS chief executive officer Leah Taaffe said.

“All funds raised will go towards our Opening Doors Projects, which so far has delivered four projects that have built four homes, 10 units and provided housing for 20 people with disabilities in EchucaMoama.

“We’ve just started construction on our fifth Opening Doors Project in Moama.”

The goal is simple: Have fun, make new connections, and raise much-needed funds for the project.

“The thing we love about doing it here is that it makes it more accessible for people,” Leah said.

48 What’s On

“The route is accessible, so if you’re using a mobility aid like a wheelchair or a trike to get around you can do the entire course – it’s a pretty impressive feat for a community like ours to do that thanks to the infrastructure.”

Entry costs remain unchanged from last year, and early-bird entrants will receive a commemorative 10th anniversary running top or singlet. For more information and to register, visit: https://clrs.org.au/get-involved/johnnosrun/

THE COLOURFUL AUSTRALIAN OPEN DARTS

TOURNAMENT IS RETURNING TO MOAMA IN AUGUST

August 5-19 | Moama
51 What’s On

The Australian Darts Open is staying on the border, taking place from Monday, August 15 to Saturday, August 19 at the Moama Bowling Club.

The best players in the World Darts Federation will descend on Moama after a successful event in 2022, the second time the open was held at MBC.

The tournament will once again be a platinum rated, ranked WDF event, with the prize pool of $80,000 contested by both the competitions elite and aspiring amateurs, who will be able to earn a spot in the open in qualifying tournaments held on August 14 and 15.

“It’s a tremendous competition,” MBC sales and marketing manager George Santos said.

“We’re so glad to be on board again and able to support all volunteers that bring this together in conjunction with Murray River Council, who are the main sponsor of the event.

“As a venue we look forward to welcoming all visitors. The event is always a colourful one and it brings plenty of characters into town.

“Tourism will benefit and we look forward to another successful event.”

The open has drawn a colourful, and plentiful, array of competitors and fans during the event’s stay on the Murray River.

“I think it’s a sport with growing popularity,” George said.

“If you are able to catch all these competitions, they’re held in stadium situations and there’s a massive following.

“It’s great to follow the spectacle and the characters the game brings to the party.”

The open will also kickstart a darts extravaganza, with the Australian Darts Championships and Pacific Masters Tournament again to be held at Rich River Golf Club in Moama between August 5 and 13.

Roll up to truck display

Focusing on the history of trucking in Australia, the display will be at Rotary Park, Echuca on September 9 and 10.

American Truck Historical Society committee member Jenny Cotterell (Australian chapter), who runs the display, said all makes and models of trucks were welcome.

“It is a gathering of old trucks, as well as some newer models,” Jenny said.

“It is important to preserve the past for future generations, when it comes to transport.

“If someone doesn’t preserve these old trucks, they could be lost for the next generations.”

Jenny said the display was ‘a bit like a men’s shed

for trucks’, with many of the participants restoring their trucks to give them purpose.

“You hear a lot of old blokes talking about when they were 14 years old and learning to drive in their grandpa's truck.

“It is important to many of them and their families.” At the 2022 event there were over 200 trucks on display, with the 2023 event expecting similar numbers.

“You can roll-up on the day with your truck and entry is free for anyone that brings a truck,” Jenny said.

The display will include club merchandise, trade and food stalls.

Live music over the weekend will be by Van-Yt playing a mix of country and rock from the 50’s to now.

Heathcote shows off what it’s got

AS THE KING’S BIRTHDAY LONG WEEKEND APPROACHES, THE HEATHCOTE REGION GEARS UP FOR ONE OF ITS BIGGEST ANNUAL EVENTS, HEATHCOTE ON SHOW.

For three days, from June 10 to June 12, the region’s artisan winemakers, brewers, and distillers, along with musicians, artists, and food vendors, will come together to celebrate and showcase the best of their craft.

Located in the heart of Victoria, the Heathcote region is known for its unique terroir, a combination of ancient Cambrian soils, warm climate, and high altitude, that produces bold, full-bodied wines. But the region is not limited to wine, as more and more craft breweries, distilleries and olive groves have established themselves, diversifying the local offering and creating a vibrant and dynamic scene. During Heathcote on Show, visitors have the opportunity to taste and explore the region’s offerings through a variety of experiences. With more than 25 locations participating, visitors can hop on and off four different shuttle bus routes, interconnecting 15 venues, including cellar doors, pop-up stalls, restaurants and food trucks.

While participating and visiting the various locations is free, the shuttle service is $40. The event offers something for everyone, from the wine aficionado to the beer lover and the gin enthusiast.

Many participating venues offer exclusive tastings, new releases, and cellar door specials.

Visitors can also enjoy gourmet food, live music, and art installations, creating a “fun, festive atmosphere”, Heathcote tourism and development president Peter Young said.

It’s an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the local culture and experience the unique offerings of our artisans and producers. Whether you come with family, friends, or alone, you’re guaranteed to have a great time and leave with a new appreciation for the region.
