A rewarding harvest
T
he 2016 harvest has seen another interesting but rewarding year for Pfeiffer Wines. During the summer while the grapes are ripening and developing lots of flavour and sweet fruit characters, Chris and Jen Pfeiffer walk through the vines, plucking grapes from different parts of the bunches and different parts of the vine. They taste the juice, they crunch the seeds and discuss how close they think it will be till the grapes are ripe enough to harvest. Samples of grapes are also brought into the winery laboratory to be manually crushed, juice extracted and tested for the scientific assessment as to when they are ready to harvest. At the start of February, the vintage crew arrive to join forces with Jen's permanent winery staff, Jamie and Steve. As Pfeiffer Wines are involved with an International Exchange Programme for winemakers throughout the world, each year they have many people apply to come to work and learn. The 3 "pfantastic" crew Jen had this year were from three different countries; France, Portugal and from the Czech Republic. The first grapes to come were to make sparkling wine, followed by the white grape varieties,
then red, then the jewels in the crown, with the fortifieds. This year, with the dry conditions and the warmth, rather than heat during January, the various grape varieties got a bit confused and they had whites, reds and fortified varieties all being ready to harvest at about the same time. This meant the pressure was on...pressure on the winemaking team to crush, to press, to ferment into wine and to move into barrel all at the same time. Without going into the day by day work plan, the magic of turning grape juice into wine happens, the wines are cleaned up through racking, filtration and fining methods, are transferred into oak barrels if needing this type of time for maturation or into stainless steel tanks if they are to be bottled earlier. Jen's aromatic white wines, like our "pfamous" Riesling, are destined to be bottled as soon as possible after vintage to capture all those glorious aromas and flavours within the bottle. Once the wines are in oak they need to be monitored closely to see how they are maturing. Samples are taken to be assessed in the laboratory. Everyone thinks these tasting jobs are great fun but it is really hard work concentrating
on all the components of the wine while it is still 'a babe in arms'...or oak to be precise. To keep the wines in their best environment, the barrels have to be topped each week, the wines have to be stirred to keep the yeast lees in suspension and when the time is right, the barrels have to be emptied, wines prepared for bottling and then bottled. Some wines are never completely finished, like the fortified wines I mentioned earlier. These very special wines and are a winemakers delight. The wines always need the winemakers influence, their skill, their love, their care and their nurturing. That is why Chris says they are like his children, his members of his family, loved, guided, nurtured and cherished. I call them the winemaker's gift to their appreciative public. Jen has embraced these wines as well and often delivers lectures to sommeliers and up and coming winemakers as part of their studies in wine science. She is happy to share the love.
Pfeiffer Wines is a five-star, family owned winery that produces a diverse range of award-winning premium wines. The historic cellars and century-old timber bridge are situated in a tranquil, natural setting on the banks of Sunday Creek – an anabranch of the Murray River. Pfeiffer Wines is open 7 days a week. Tastings are complimentary and visitors are always made very welcome. To truly enjoy the idyllic setting, visitors are encouraged to choose their “pfavorite” bottle of Pfeiffer wine and enjoy it with a gourmet picnic hamper on the historic timber bridge overlooking Sunday Creek – a truly unique Australian experience.

Warrabilla Wines a winter must
W
arrabilla Wines is renowned for producing some of Australia’s most intense, mouthfilling wines. Naturally, Durif and Shiraz star in the impressive line-up of reds, achieving incredible levels of ripeness and concentration. But there is more to it than that; look for crisp, delicate Riesling, textural Marsanne and a small, quality range of fortifieds. Andrew and Carol Smith founded Warrabilla Wines in 1991 and moved to their current location on the Murray Valley Highway between Rutherglen and Yarrawonga five years later. In 2012 they were joined by daughter Amy, a sixth generation winemaker, furthering the family’s 150-year tradition of winemaking in the Rutherglen wine region. Their wines are divided into one of two label tiers. The Reserve label is a prime example of the winery’s
leaves on the vines have finished their job and are now changing
through beautiful colours of amber foliage.
This year Warrabilla celebrates 20
years since first opening the cellar
door. The release of the sensational 2015 vintage wines saw the release of two of their highly revered Parola’s label wines, along with a
number of Reserves and a crisp, fruity Riesling.
Warrabilla offers a picnic area and large grasslands, giving visitors
young and old space to unwind and relax. style; strong varietal definition, immense colour, concentration and fruit flavour. The Parola’s label is reserved for premium wines made only in great vintages. Maturation of these wines occurs in brand new oak barrels and exhibit extraordinary depth of fruit flavour, impenetrable
colour and walls of tannin. A visit to the cellar door has become a rite of passage for lovers of full bodied reds. Bold, balanced reds and luscious fortifieds are the perfect match on a cold winter’s night. It is a fabulous time of year to explore this beautiful and diverse region. The

When winter comes - spring is not far behind!
T
he weather may be cold in the northeast Victoria at this time of year but there is ONE place you are sure to always receive a warm welcome and that is Chiltern. Regular visitors to the village in Indigo Shire will understand but if you haven’t been to Chiltern recently much has changed about this gentle old lady of a town and in winter you can almost have the place to yourself. People say you can ‘smell’ winter and the autumn break signifies a stage of renewal in the Chiltern – Mount Pilot National Park which wraps itself around the village like a protective grandmother. Yes – you can ‘smell’ winter and it will come in the form of comfort food, home cooked meals... hot chocolate or maybe just the crisp morning air that makes you suddenly feel alive again. But there is also something wonderful about winter that creates
a longing in visitors to Chiltern. It may be the streetscape that harkens back to a bygone era or a visit to one of the three National Trust properties in Chiltern that reach out to you and take you on a journey back in time. It may be one of the new retail outlets in Chiltern that will pique your interest or perhaps just sitting by a log fire watching the flames dance as they warm your toes. Chiltern has plenty of accommodation options to offer the traveller. There is a motel, a caravan park with onsite cabins as well as bed and breakfast options to suit your needs. You don’t have to hurry in winter. An all-day breakfast awaits your arrival and the coffee is always fresh at one of the new eateries in town. Let your nose discover their location and remember – you can ‘smell’ winter. There are new bike trails through the National Park that are sure to

Or if you are after a more sedentary pursuit find yourself a new book to read at the book store, or simply exchange a book at the Visitor Information Centre and return to your log fire for the day. You know it will soon be time to
select a destination for your dinner and today in Chiltern you will be spoilt for choice. But the meal is just the first step to enjoying your stay. Nearby wineries and boutique breweries ensure that your meal is washed down with the best the region has to offer. There are events on in Chiltern and other villages in Indigo Shire. World class holiday
F
or a family holiday destination North East Victoria is spoilt - it’s not everywhere that has world-class skiing and a childfriendly wonderland on their doorstep after all! Falls Creek is the kind of holiday most families fly to, but you can do it as a day trip. Just 2 hours from Albury, you can drive there in most types of vehicles. The road is safe and you are unlikely to be driving on snow thanks to its sheltered approach. Convenient day parking places visitor metres from the action when they arrive. The vibrant village is one of the big drawcards. Mixing a full ski-in, ski-out aspect with untouched Australian beauty, it’s the type of romantic location you can’t help but keep the camera out for every moment. Whilst there try from over 30 quality dining establishments many are award winning amongst the best in the North East. In the Village Bowl you have the most complete snowplay offering around with Toboganning, Snow Tubing, Kids Snowmobiling and general snowplay in the one village-based location. Out on the slopes Victoria’s largest skiable area is also the most reliable with endless snowmaking
capacity. 60% of the trails are blue runs which mean Falls Creek is the perfect training ground to transition from beginner to advanced. Further out there are 65km of groomed cross country trails in the home of the Australian National Team. Certain trails are dedicated to snowshoeing and fat biking (think mountain bikes built for snow!) and you can try unique
experiences like driving your own snowmobile or catching a helicopter ride for an afternoon skiing at Mt Hotham. Sometimes the best things are in your own backyard – for one day or every weekend, Falls Creek is the winter experience your family will never forget! A ghostly tour with a twist D
o you believe in ghosts? The people at Asylum Ghost Tours do. The lovely, haunted Mayday Hills Asylum in Beechworth, Australia, looms over the township like a vulture waiting for someone to die. Once shunned and hidden away, it’s now a major contributor to the township’s tourism attraction. One of the businesses situated within its majestic 150-year-old walls is Asylum Ghost Tours, running seven days and nights a week throughout the year. During the daytime history tours, their 90-minute experiences encompass memories, local
recollections, and stories of the patients and the treatments they suffered.
Then, after darkness falls, their
ghost tours take you through
the many abandoned hallways,
cells, common rooms, surgeries, and punishment areas where so
much horror has occurred over its history.
They also offer fully-equipped
paranormal investigations, where you may find more than you
bargained for, as well as a cinema for horror film screenings.

Kate’s Cottage – in the heart of ‘Kelly Country’
W
hether you think of him as a hero or villain, there’s little doubt the story of the Ned Kelly’s life is the stuff legends are made of. A visit to Glenrowan, in the heart of Kelly country, is a virtual step
back in time and there’s no better place to indulge in the rich history of the region than at Kate’s Cottage – Gifts, Souvenirs, Museum and Homestead. Kate’s Cottage, named after Ned’s sister Kate, has an extensive range
of Ned Kelly memorabilia – both the interesting and unusual, new and rare collector’s books, t-shirts, souvenirs and Australiana items. Visitors are free to browse the gift shop before stepping through to the Kelly Museum – an authentic replica of the Kelly Homestead as it was in Ned’s day in Greta (now Glenrowan West). Directly opposite the ‘Big Ned Kelly’ statue on Gladstone Street, Glenrowan, a visit to Kate’s Cottage is a must for anyone interested in indulging in the rich history of the Kelly gang. The Ned Kelly Museum was recently listed as the area’s
Number 1 tourist attraction by TripAdvisor and holds a Certificate of Excellence for the display. The museum is also on the Experience Oz and NZ Bucket List for the top 100 attractions in Victoria. Head to Glenrowan and call in and see Rod and Chris, Lee and Diane at Kate’s Cottage – gifts, souvenirs, museum and homestead for a unique glimpse into local history and chance to uncover the little bit of Ned Kelly ‘larrikin’ that lives in all of us.

Rich in history and pride J
ohn Gehrig established their vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976; only minutes from the Milawa Gourmet Region. In 2011 the John Gehrig Wines team have expanded to a new vineyard and cellar door site in Gooramadda (Rutherglen), ironically where the family's long wine making history began and very close to John’s birthplace. One of the four siblings of the late John and Elizabeth, Ross Gehrig fifth generation, is now the winemaker at this iconic Northeast Victorian winery. Since completing his Bachelor
of Wine Science at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, Ross has worked several vintages in Europe (Alsace and Burgundy) and even Israel. Together with wife Meghan he continues the vision that his parents had while adding his own special touches to it. While conscious of family history, Ross is reluctant to claim that John Gehrig Wines is Victoria’s oldest winemaking family saying that it’s “one of the oldest, give or take a year or two.” Nor does he claim his position ‘as of right’ and when asked how he ended up in the family business he laughs and
says “probably stupidity,” before adding in his very frank style “and a competitiveness probably to be better than my old man.” With a wide variety of quality wines to choose from like sparkling, whites, reds and fortified why not come down to the cellar doors and enjoy a tasting. From family favourites like
Riesling and Pinot Noir to unusual varieties like Chenin Blanc and Gamay along with great fortified wines you can’t pass on visiting their cellar door this winter. So warm up with a visit to John Gehrig

atin & Stones once again has introduced a range of sleepwear that has the fussiest of buyers lining up to purchase. Top brands are represented in store that have proven to be the best for a peaceful night’s sleep. Magnolia Lounge, Givoni, Florence Broadhurst, YUU, Kaye Jones and Pickles & Loop to name just a few. Also cosy winter robes, perfect to snuggle up in. “I’m very aware that consumers are looking for the best value for money products on the market,” Jenni from Satin & Stones said “I ensure that when choosing my sleepwear range each season that the companies I represent offer exactly that. “Many of my customers continue to restock every season sleepwear pieces from the same brand as they first purchased from me when I opened for business back in 2011, such is their level of satisfaction in their original purchase.” And now new to Satin & Stones Jenni has introduced a selection of beautiful Knitwear and Leisure
Wear to suit the most discerning buyer. Labels such as Merino Mink, Merino Snug & Goondawindi in Knitwear and Duchamp Leisure Wear is proving so popular that Jenni continues to source for other brands that offer the same level of quality. “I’ve always loved wearing pure wool for not only warmth but its durability and I was sure there were other women who felt the same. “I was frustrated that I was spending money on pieces that after a few wears were pilling and losing their shape. Hence I went about seeking out a range that could be trusted to last more than one season. “The possum and merino ranges are renowned for their warmth and nonpilling attributes. And Duchamp is a brand that is tried and true and it’s longevity proves that it delivers not only style but also affordability,” Jenni says. So, what are you waiting for? Take a look for yourself. Trading hours are 9.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 9.30am to 1pm. LayBy welcome.

Great for winter, "Cold" off the press you might say, is this season’s extra virgin olive oil. Full of flavour, vitamins, antioxidants and just so healthy! This year Rich Glen seems to be yielding
about 20% oil from their olives. There are
actually about 700 olives per 500ml bottle; now that's a lot!!
Did you know; extra virgin olive oil was once sold in chemists for medicinal purposes?
“Whenever we have an ailment in our family
whether it be a cold, ear ache or even when it's a cow in the paddock struggling with
bloat my mother in law always says drop some olive oil in there or drink it when your throat is sore,” Rich Glen’s Roz Vodusek says. “And as far as the cow goes, throw a bottle of olive oil down its throat.”
Roz recommends using oil lashings on your
steamed veggies, salads, deep or shallow frying.
“My kids still like the taste of butter so I
whip up an olive oil-dairy blend that is super healthy and they love the taste,” she said.
“You can also add fresh herbs and garlic to make your own garlic butter. Give the recipe
OLIVE BUTTER... 500ml Rich Glen signature extra virgin olive oil, refrigerated overnight so it turns solid. 500gm Australian butter, room temperature place. In a food processor or thermomix add the solid olive oil and butter, wizz up for about a minute until all combined. Pour into containers and seal. This will harden up a little and just keep it refrigerated and it will last months. Use it in on the kids toast, in cakes, risotto and shallow fry.. Flavour!!!
a go and Enjoy!”

The homestead was built in 1842 by the famous explorer, Hamilton Hume for his sister-in-law Elizabeth Hume and her nine children after her husband was murdered by bushrangers. It is classified by the National Trust because of its unique design featuring octagonal rooms. The central octagonal room is known as the fortress room and allows a clear view of all angles in case of attack from bushrangers or natives. Visiting the Byramine Homestead, with its own brewery and cider house, is a complete experience. The range of beer and cider has
increased to ten varieties and visitors are loving the experience of sampling the diverse range on offer. Guests are able to tour the historic homestead and while visiting enjoy a Devonshire Tea or something off the lunch menu. As the leaves on the giant elms begin to fall and the weather becomes cooler, guests enjoy dining on the historical verandah or by the wonderful fireplaces within the glorious homestead. What’s Italian about a Lagerphone?
T
here is always something new to experience in the Cafe Culture Series program of events which is why Moira Arts & Culture Inc made the decision to present the 2016 series. The carefully selected program of four events throughout the year aims to impress and delight with a focus on diversity and quality. The third show in the 2106 Cafe Culture Series sees six young jazz musicians “The Lagerphones’’ who formed whilst all sharing a house in Carlton. It’s an unlikely name for a band that does not have a lagerphone in their arsenal of musical instruments. They do have the wonderful combination of Jon Hunt on clarinet, Ben Harrison on trumpet and vocals, James Macauley on trombone, Marty Holoubek on bass, Louis King and guitar and banjo and Nick Martyn on drums, which brings the big bold brass sounds of a ‘little’ big band to small stages around the state. Taking their cues from the giants of early jazz from New Orleans and the trail blazing Australian trad of the Red Onions and The Hoodangers, this band bring their old-timey tunes, deconstructed pop songs and irreverent originals to audiences with healthy doses of verve, gusto and fun. From a furious stomp to sweet lowdown blues, the
Lagerphones pay tribute to all things Melbourne. Around Melbourne the Lagerphones have been seen performing at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, the famous Bennets Lane Jazz Club, Fitzroy Pinnacle, Uptown Jazzcafe, Paris Cat Jazz Club and Open Studio. They have also performed at the Wangaratta Jazz festival and recently embarked on a whirlwind ten day tour of Tokyo, Japan. The Lagerphones will grace the stage at the Cobram Italian Social Club Friday August 5th
8pm. Butler’s Pantry from Numurkah will provide a scrumptious 2 course meal, themed to
the style of the music. Pre order dinner tickets are also available; please enquire when purchasing your tickets for the show. Tickets are on sale now
