Deni’s swimming legacy

The first Learn to Swim class was held on the Edward River at Deniliquin in November 1922.

With the program still running today, it is said to be one of the longest running Learn to Swim campaigns in Australia.

Historical markers recognising this important milestone were installed at Deniliquin’s McLean Beach - the location of those early lessons - in May.

Originally planned for November last year, the centenary celebrations were delayed due to flooding.

The markers also pay tribute to the man who founded the program in Deniliquin - Hector McLean.

McLean Beach, where the swimming lessons were held, was in those days known as Brewery Bend.

It was renamed in honour of ‘Mr Mac’ on the 50th anniversary of the program.

As the only person in the community with Royal Life Saving Society certificates at the time, he was the community’s choice to get a program up and running after some tragic drownings.

Classes were held from October to March each year, daily at 6.30am.

For 24 years Mr Mac taught alone, later receiving assistance from local citizens and Deniliquin Swim Club members, many of whom were young people he had taught to swim.

While no longer held on the river, the program started all those years ago continues in Deniliquin.

The centenary project has now also inspired the expansion of an historical exhibition at the Deniliquin & District Historical Society Museum - located at the end of Macauley St, which can also be accessed by using the Beach to Beach walk which starts at McLean Beach.

A new centrepiece is Mr Mac’s stop watch, which was donated to the museum by his youngest daughter Ruth Robinson while in Deniliquin for the celebrations.

Historical Society president Lindsay Renwick said swimming carnival trophies, photographs and media coverage of the Learn to Swim program and every carnival held will also be part of the exhibition.

The Historical Society Museum is located in the former Police Inspector’s residence and is a treasure trove of Deniliquin and district history across a number of subject areas.

It is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am to noon, or at other times by prior arrangement. Contact the museum on 0428 359 297 or email denihistorical@gmail.com.

With a river running through the centre of the town, Deniliquin has long placed significant importance on learn to swim programs across the district.

Where it all happens

With outdoor heating, indoor dining and so much more, the Deni RSL has everything you need to escape those dropping temperatures.

There’s a bustling entertainment schedule over the coming months, which will include healer and medium Simon Hay, who will feature at the Deni RSL on June 9.

Music lovers will want to put a circle around June 24 and July 1.

Performing for members and guests in June will be Brendan Britt, and on July 1 Ellie Drake will bring her 1990s inspired indie rock sound to the club. Plus there will be a range of other musical performers over the cooler months. Below we outline some of the artists performing this winter.

For those who love a cheeky win, plan your visits to the club to coincide with the regular raffles and draws.

There is also bingo every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. If general knowledge is more up your alley, head along to trivia night each Tuesday.

A visit to the bar for a refreshing drink is inevitable during your visit to the club, but make sure to sample the delicious meals and desserts while you’re there too. The Deniliquin RSL offers an amazing selection of food for its guests. A new Brasserie restaurant menu has been released in time for winter, filled with delicious options from classic burgers to pasta dishes and Asian cuisine.

For coffee lovers, the RSL has its own coffee shop that offers a happy hour for members from 3pm to 4pm on Mondays and Tuesdays.

For information about club facilities and the entertainment schedule, go to www.denilrsl.com or follow the club on social media.

MUSTER MEMORIES Creating more

One of the biggest events on the Aussie calendar, the Deni Ute Muster, is offering even more over two days in 2023.

The famed gates of the Deni Ute Muster on Conargo Rd, Deniliquin will open Thursday, September 28 for early access to the campgrounds. The official action is then held Friday, September 29 and Saturday, September 30.

The musical line-up features some of Australia’s biggest names in country and pop music. The Aussie legends gracing the main stages this year are (in alphabetical order): Adam Harvey & Beccy Cole, Andrew Swift, Casey Barnes, Catherine Britt, James Johnston, Jayne Denham, Jessica Mauboy, John Williamson, Lee Kernaghan, Missy Higgins, The Whitlams, Black Stump Band, Travis Collins and Deniliquin artist Zara Lindeman.

But the Deni Ute Muster has always been about more than just music and utes. This year there will be more entertainment than ever before, activities and competitions fit for the whole family will be scattered across the show grounds.

Returning for 2023 are the hugely popular driving competitions, bringing the sights and sounds of supercharged utes competing across the GME Circlework, Just Country Barrel Races and Go to Wo competitions, together with some exciting new attractions.

For the youngest Musterers there’s the Rev It Up Racing Junior Racing Experience, where kids, teens and their parents get to race to see who the fastest driver is in their family.

If speed isn’t your thing, come and experience a Monster Truck Ride and see what it’s like to be a passenger in the back of ‘Bear Foot’ the monster truck.

The team from Black Snake Productions will also be visiting with a huge range of animals in their Mobile Zoo. There will be wildlife talks, venomous snake safety and first aid talks and a chance to get up close and personal with dingoes, possums, bettongs, crocodiles, pythons, lizards, turtles and more. Highly venomous king browns, taipans, tiger snakes, death

adders and others will be safely on display in their new 6m long venomous snake pit.

Another new attraction this year is Whitey’s Ferret Racing. There will be five races each day with prizes up for grabs, and proceeds going to Deniliquin CanAssist. The Circus Dropzone will give people of all ages a chance to try their hand at trapeze, juggling, unicycling, hula-hoops and more.

Also new for 2023 is ice skating, with a synthetic ice rink to be set up at the muster site, and Bottle & Brush Painting Workshops will be offered to a limited number of patrons. Workshop spots must be pre-booked at www.trybooking.com/CGUGW and www.trybooking.com/CGUGU

For all those grey nomads, and those not so grey, come and catch up on all things Aussie camping, caravanning, 4WD-ing with all-round legend Craig ’Macca’ McGown on the Friday.

For all the littlies, there is some extra special entertainment. Six time Golden Guitar winner and the current Female Artist of the Year Amber Lawrence will be bringing her Kids Gone Country show to the SunRice Day Stage.

The team from the Bendigo LEGO® User Group will be on hand to help create a masterpiece made from thousands of pieces throughout the weekend, and don’t forget to stop by for a bounce with everyone’s favourite characters on the Paw Patrol themed, 12m long jumping castle.

Deniliquin Golf Club is on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, but just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. With 18 carefully manicured fairways meandering around the waterways and forests it is one of Australia’s most natural and beautiful golf settings.

Stay and play… golf in Deni

Deniliquin Golf Club hosts one of the most picturesque courses in the region. Enjoy the beauty of this golf course, alongside the kangaroos, kookaburras, Superb Parrots, echidna, goannas, lizards, pelicans and a host of other wildlife that abounds in this paradise of nature.

With its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, Deniliquin is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses.

If you’re looking for a trip away, the Deni Golf Resort has you covered with a range of packages, built to take the stress out of finding accommodation. Its 22 units overlook the ninth fairway, and are nestled among bushland.

The resort and course are in a superb location on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. It’s just 30m from the resort to the first tee, and it’s a shorter distance to the bushwalk track.

The course perfectly reflects a chance for all golfing standards to enjoy a fun and challenging round.

By modern standards the course is not long — 5817 metre par 72 for men, and 5118 metre par 72 for ladies. However, off the back tees it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered.

Poor shots find the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition.

A feature of Deniliquin golf course is the ‘same day play’ principle that applies. On most days you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 and book your tee off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater for your golfing needs.

After your round on the course, enjoy the club’s facilities. The clubhouse is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, with Friday nights a speciality, when there are meat raffles, great meals and a fun atmosphere where locals will make you welcome.

If you want to practise your game, a new addition at the Golf Club is the under cover driving range, which features an automated ball dispenser and lighting, allowing extended play on your terms. It’s simply a matter of getting a token or swiping your credit card to get a bucket of balls and working on your swing.

The new facility has been four years in the making, with club members collecting and selling balls to fund the new range facilities, including the ball dispenser, pick up cart, ball washer and fully automated system under lights. What’s

EDWARD RIVER Fish biting in the

With the water cooling, clearer waters and the river dropping, I think this triggers the fish into having a feeding frenzy before the metabolism slows down for the winter months.

Bait fishing is still a great option though, but if you own a boat or you know someone who does, do yourself a favour, get out on the water. Before you do, head into to Deniliquin Outdoors & Camping in Deniliquin to see Pete and grab a few lures to cast and troll around the Edward.

Get out whilst there’s still some water to fish as the river is continuing to drop. The numbers of fish being caught recently have been outstanding and it’s not uncommon to go fishing for a few hours and land a handful of legal sized fish.

There’s one thing I’ve noticed this year, the amount of local lads really getting into fishing. The likes of Luke Holloway, Isaac Behsman, Will Green, Evie Fox and Jay McCully. I know I’ve missed a few but the lads have been landing some quality fish lately. It’s great to see the future fisherman practising catch and release and, they are great a bunch of klids. Keep at it and you will be rewarded with some nice fish and memories that will last a lifetime.

Brett ‘Guru’ Suckling and his boys Isaac, Nash and Chad have also been getting among some quality fish. Brett has bragging rights over the boys with a 102cm Cod caught casting a Koolabung surface lure. The lads have been trolling and casting between the McLean Beach boat ramp downstream to the boat club. The lures of choice have been the 110mm Coddog LogHoppers.

Tristan Fitzsimmons landed a cracking 103cm cod casting a Reaper Spinnerbait up into some shallow water recently, a few bends downstream from the boat club.

You may think a certain area of river gets a lot of attention with people fishing it, but persistence is key. The big fish are there you just have to be at the right place at the right time.

And you know the fish are biting when Anthony ‘Wriggler’ Bradley can catch a fish! Wriggler managed to book an afternoon of guided fishing with the Guru Brett Suckling. It was a great afternoon with Wriggs landing a new personal best cod of 75cm along with four others.

Zayah Wereta landed his new PB of 92cm and his mate Jade Parsons-Cooper with a PB of 62cm walking the banks of the Colligen Creek. The Colligen Creek has been the place to fish over the past few months with great numbers of big cod being caught. Whether walking the banks, casting surface or

trolling lures, you would have been unlucky not to have caught a fish from there.

The Yellowbelly seem to be making a comeback with a few starting to be caught and all in good condition and size. The few I have caught have been in the deeper waters of about five metres.

Neville Lester is having a good run at the moment trolling up nice cod and Yellowbelly. His biggest just recently being 85cm caught trolling upstream of the Four Post on the 110mm Coddog Loghopper.

Jeremy Branson has also been reeling in a few nice cod up to 75cm.

It’s been a great season to date and it’s been great to see new faces popping up in the Deniliquin Fishing Group.

As I write this article there are still a few boat ramps that are useable, McLean Beach, Lawson Syphon and Four Post. The others are usable but a 4WD is needed.

Looking forward to next month, the Mulwala Canal will be lowered and the same goes for the Edward River. As to how low this year, I’m unsure.

It’s a great time of year to have a look around at what the river has been hiding over the past couple of years. I know I’ll be out trying to retrieve a few of my lost lures and take note of what timber lays beneath the surface.

If you’d like to see some of the recent catches check out the Deniliquin Fishing Page, answer the questions and you’ll be automatically joined. Or check out my YouTube channel Ranga with a Rod, like and subscribe.

For all your fishing tackle and camping needs call into see Pete at Betta Deniliquin Outdoors & Camping, Deniliquin’s number one fishing and outdoor supplier.

If you see or suspect illegal fishing, please call 1800 043 536. Make the call and make the difference.

What’s On Winter 2023 11

Although the Beach to Beach walk is already a beautiful centrepiece in Deniliquin, it just became even better with the addition of an ‘Our River’ art installation. Rachel Braybon Art worked with local Yarkuwa ranger Liticia Ross to design the piece. It is situated along the walk near the wharf, next to the Deniliquin National Bridge.

The installation represents the role of the Yarkuwa rangers - of caring for country to maintain the local river system and to preserve the knowledge of the riverine environment for the benefit of the broader community.

The three waves represent the sky, land and water of the Kolety Werkul (Edward Wakool) River System. The Wamba Wamba Perrepa Perrepa people look to the sky - the first wave - to tell stories with the stars and to identify changes in the weather. The land - the middle wave - is their home, their connection to sky and river. The river - the third wave - is the lifeline, song lines and food source. It is life itself.

Olive Oil at its best

A slightly longer and warmer development period has seen Rich Glen’s much anticipated 2023 olive harvest producing an exceptional cold-pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), with highly prized polyphenols or biophenols saturating this premium oil.

“Olives pressed within six hours of harvesting produce our premium EVOO - which the olive industry fondly refers to as the first or ‘early harvest’ - and is prized for its powerful antioxidants,” Daimien said.

Recent research indicates these antioxidants help to protect the body against oxidative stress and inflammation. These same polyphenols give the EVOO its characteristic peppery flavour, along with its intense and highly prized fresh green-grass aroma.

“Fresh, pure, premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil is now known to have a positive impact on health including heart disease, blood pressure, weight, diabetes and other inflammatory diseases,” accredited dietician and Australia’s EVOO Olive Wellness Institute Expert Library Jacqui Plozza said.

Her presentation on the ‘Science of Extra Virgin Olive Oil’ also indicates that consuming between 20-50ml of EVOO per day is associated with health

benefits, especially for heart health (eg cholesterol and blood pressure health).

The bottom line is that using premium EVOO as your preferred healthy fat - alongside a Mediterranean diet - is an example of nutritional, ‘gold standard’ ideals for assisting us all to maintain good health.

Rich Glen Olive Oil has 36,000 olive trees on the Murray River at Yarrawonga. It enables the production of about 200,000L of cold pressed EVOO annually. This is used as a base for more than 180 products - both food and skincare. All products are made on farm from 98 per cent Australian ingredients.

“We are passionate about producing premium products, and where possible, with all-Australian ingredients,” Daimien said.

“We love what we do and where we live, and we do it all with our family, and with amazing support from our community, near and far.”

The Rich Glen Provedore|Pantry and Rich Glen Orangerie|Skincare is open seven days a week at 137 Belmore St, Yarrawonga, from 9am to 4pm.

You can also view and purchase the range online at www.richglenoliveoil.com.

Yarrawonga’s Rich Glen Olive Estate’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil harvest is now well underway and the quality of the premium ’2023 Early Harvest’ “is simply stunning”, according to managing director Daimien Vodusek.

River Country Explore the Backroads of

Let your taste buds lead you on an adventure this winter - to River Country and the Backroads Trail.

The Backroads Trail weaves together the themes of heritage, environment, food, wine and culture in an informed and user-friendly way.

You’ll not only stand on the sites where history was made - you’ll be delighted by small businesses all along the way offering you delicious produce, a comfy bed for the night, and extra attractions such as stunning sculptures, leafy bushland walks and relaxing river cruises.

It will take you off the main highway, but it will open your eyes to this marvellous region.

With its signposted interpretive sites, you can see how the people of this region have lived on and shaped this land from Dreamtime prehistory to the present day.

The trail features 22 attractions, half of which are food or wine producers.

From our paddocks come some of the best of Australia’s beef, lamb, wool and grain. But it’s been a hard-won success.

You’ll learn about the search for water and the despair of watching the Earth crack open in drought, the long wait for the railway to arrive and finally connect remote settlers with city markets and, most importantly, with each other.

On the wide plains, parents built a school with their bare hands, bare knuckle boxers fought, and mechanised shearing was invented.

There is even an earthquake zone to show you. You will gain insights into the way your food is produced in this area, and get to meet some of the people who grow and create it.

The resources behind the Backroads Trail include historians, ecologists, agricultural experts and Indigenous archaeologists, as well as many farming families who have generously donated knowledge, time and personal photographs.

The lovely country towns of Moama, Mathoura, Deniliquin and Barham are the gateways to the Backroads Trail, and it is recommended you mix your trail touring with time to stay and play in these centres and in the small villages dotted along the route.

All along the Trail, you’ll find very special niche businesses offering you delicious delights such as meads, avocados, wines, honey, olives and citrus fruit - and even British-style pork pies and haggis. Hand made and nurtured from paddock to plate, our beautiful local produce is available for you to sample whilst chatting with the producers - driving around the Backroads Trail is like taking part in a progressive farmers’ market.

DISTILLERY Echuca Moama’s World Renowned

Echuca Distillery is celebrating after winning two gold medals at the 2023 World Spirits Competition in San Francisco.

The local business collected first prize with its Chilli Lime Agave Spirit and Smoked Agave Spirit at what is the world’s largest and most prestigious spirits competition. In addition to the gold rush, Echuca Distillery also won silver for its Silver Agave Spirit and Gold Agave Spirit. Head distiller Peter de Vries said the accolades were a reward for the Echuca Distillery team’s effort in recent years.

“(It is) thorough vindication of our previous two years’ work mastering our fermentation, distillation, and flavouring concepts of our agave spirits,” Peter said.

“This exciting range of products is built for the margarita — Australia’s most popular cocktail serve.”

Mr de Vries says the production process involves taking the Mexican syrup and refining it to a point that is far above high-volume spirits.

“Our process involves taking the Mexican-produced syrup and fermenting the product via our distillery where we convert the sugars into alcohol,” he said.

The small distillery is producing about 100 litres of the spirit per week and the growing business is already looking to other sites where greater volumes can be produced.

“The business is already operating from a second location where we can produce a greater quantity,” Peter said.

“The intention would be to retain this distillery as a showcase for patrons of the restaurant and a cellar door to increase awareness and sales.”

The distillery is in a partnership with Bar Lee, at 555 High St, Echuca. The beautifully designed interior at “front of house” has the distillery separated by large glass screens, allowing patrons to enjoy the process of alcohol production on-site. The key ingredient that flavours the spirit is juniper berries, which gives a distinct taste and an aromatic smell. The discussion soon turned to the production of the agave plant being done in Australia, which would offer a degree of certainty to the local production of the spirit in Echuca.

“That would be fantastic. Some work is being done in Far North Queensland, where there have been attempts at growing the plants locally,” Peter said.

“But such farming would need the investment by much larger companies investing millions of dollars.”

Peter has only been with the company since September 2021 and has the responsibility as the

head distiller. His father David started the business when he moved to Echuca in 2019 after retiring from managing his own business Muskvale. Now Peter’s brother, who incidentally shares his father’s name David, has also joined the family business.

“Dad started the business in 2019 and we’ve rapidly expanded with my brother joining the business in September 2021 and myself joining in September 2022,” David jnr said.

David jnr, the distillery’s operations manager, said the personal touch has been important in their success. “We’d like to think our product has been made with more love and attention,” he said.

Echuca Distillery/Bar Lee is set in the heart Echuca just moments away from the majestic banks of the Murray River. Bar Lee is the exclusive retail shop front and tasting room for Echuca Distillery spirits. Providing Spirit tastings, with a full menu and kids menu available, beer, wine, cocktails and mocktails! You’ll be sure to find something for the whole family! Visit echucadistillery.com.au for opening times and menus.

History and hospitality collide

In Berrigan you’ll be treated to country hospitality at its finest.

Stop off for a coffee, lunch or a sweet treat at one of the boutique eateries in town, before taking a gentle wander along Chanter Street where you’ll find an eclectic collection of new and second-hand clothes, books, bric-a-brac, treasures, arts, crafts and photography.

While you’re there, be sure to take some time to read the interpretive plaques that reveal the heritage highlights of our town, including the old post office building, Federal Hotel and Memorial Hall.

Berrigan lays claim to the first rural fire service in Australia, and today the community continues to thrive on that same spirit of volunteering.

Learn more about it at Berrigan & District Heritage Museum, where local oral histories, Federation information, fire brigade memorabilia and material relating to the Berrigan RSL - including guns, medals and uniforms - are important features.

The service records of Berrigan men and women who served in World War II, plus some from World War I, are also housed here.

There is an extensive collection of photos and press cuttings of early farming and the coming of irrigation in 1939 via the Mulwala Canal, as well as materials relating to the Berrigan schools – some that have been closed for many years.

The museum can also provide you with a heritage town walk brochure, which will take you to main street buildings and corresponding wall plaques.

Berrigan and District Heritage Museum is managed by a committee of volunteers and can be found at 60 Jerilderie St, Berrigan. It is open on Wednesdays from 9am - 11am and at other times by appointment.

VISIT TOCUMWAL Sun Country on the Murray

Whatever it is you like to do, you will find an attraction or activity to suit.

Golf, water sports, adventure, fun, relaxing, art, fine food, wine and nature at its best, it’s all here just waiting to be discovered and explored, making it one of the best year-round holiday destinations in Australia.

Tocumwal sits on the NSW side of the Murray River, 270km north of Melbourne, and is one of the few towns that doesn’t have a counterpart in Victoria. Turn off the Newell Highway and discover a town nestled around the river bends and steeped in unique World War II history.

Tocumwal wears its heritage for all to see with its character filled main street and historic building facades that take you back in time.

The Tocumwal airfield was the first airfield planned as preparation for a possible Japanese invasion.

The aerodrome was commissioned by the US Army Air Corps and constructed in 1942 as the McIntyre Field heavy bomber base. 5,000 people were involved in the construction of the base, which had 450 buildings spread over 40km2, with 114km of roads interconnecting it all.

There were four runways, each nearly 2km in length. Planes were using the airstrip within five weeks of beginning construction, and the airfield was completed in four months.

The aerodrome became the RAAF station headquarters for training Liberator bomber aircrews. In December 1944, there were 5,500 personnel on the base and it subsequently became an aircraft depot until the 1960s.
