Even in the dead of winter, there’s something for everyone in the great outdoors of the Southern Riverina.

From the eternal outback scenery of Hay, to the bushland greenery of the Murrumbidgee Valley National Park, the Southern Riverina offers true Australian camping at its most diverse.

For novice campers, and those who want a comfortable, quiet stay, there are many established camping grounds that offer the perfect mixture of comfort and the raw outdoors.

Willoughby’s Beach Campground in Deniliquin offers a rich opportunity to immerse yourself in the outdoors, without giving up access to amenities in the regional town’s CBD.

It’s the perfect holiday spot for young families, and first timers, with access to the stunning Beach to Beach walk, a breezy stroll that takes you along the Edward River to sandy McLean Beach.

Keen fishers will find prosperous spots studded along the river’s banks, with breakfast only a cast line away.

Visit the information centre for extra tips on where to find the best spots.

In nearby Mathoura, the Edward River Bridge campground is bite sized tranquility. With access to the Gulpa Creek Walk, and close by to town, you can enjoy the bush without sacrificing comfort.

Hay, to Deniliquin’s north, has the unmissable Wooloondool Campground. Huge red gums crowd the river lines, and fishing spots galore surround the site. But you can still access the lively town of Hay without strain.

Deeper south, Tocumwal offers natural beauty with a modern edge. The emerging tourist town is well known for koala sightings and novel innovation, as well as gorgeous camping spots.

The Tocumwal Town Beach camping ground gives campers access to the Murray River, the huge Murray cod below its surface, and plentiful wildlife, but is

True Australian Camping ENTERTAIN THE WHOLE FAMILY

The Deniliquin RSL Club is a family friendly club which caters for all. It’s an entertainment venue, restaurant, community space, functions centre and sporting venue all rolled into one. Coming to the club to enjoy a meal is simple, delicious and hassle free.

Whether in the beautiful indoor bistro, outdoor area, or in one of the club’s lounge areas, you will enjoy your meals, drinks and time at the Deni RSL.

If you’re looking for somewhere to have a coffee and catch up, the RSL’s coffee shop is open seven days a week from 11am until late. You can enjoy barista made coffee, cakes and sandwiches among other treats.

On the entertainment front there are raffles every night of the week, membership draws, live music and even trivia nights.

And for the young ones there’s the Little Digger’s Club playground. Located indoors and encased in glass, you can relax with family and friends while still keeping an eye on the kids. The playground becomes a supervised crèche on Friday and Saturday nights, and can even be hired for children’s parties and events catered for by the professional RSL Club staff. Party platters for the kids with all the usual foods and treats are available as well as adult platters all at a reasonable price.

The downstairs Gallery Room, and two Mountbatten rooms and the Dunlop Room auditorium upstairs can also be hired for private events.

Most areas of the club can be accessed by all members of the family, although there are adult only areas which include a gaming lounge, Keno and TAB facilities.

merely a stone’s throw away from the town centre, giving visitors the best of both worlds.

Tocumwal is a hotbed of historic sites and quaint eateries, offering something to please everyone.

Closer to the iconic Murrumbidgee River, Bunyip Hole Campground is just 10 minutes from the scenic town of Darlington Point. With sandy beaches and welcoming access to the river, it’s the perfect place to both expend energy and relax.

Bunyip Hole Campground is within the Murrumbidgee Valley National Park where wildlife is a constant, with emus, kangaroos and ring tail possums sharing the area. For keen anglers, this spot is a must. There are plentiful ripe spots beyond the saltbush.

For those who want to camp and fish even deeper along the tranquil green bays of the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers in NSW, finding a spot is easy. You can pick from more than 130 campsites along the rivers.

The club also has the capacity to screen major sporting events, making it a great place to watch the footy, this year’s Olympics, horse racing and other events.

The club also has a number of sub-clubs which give you the opportunity to participate in bowls, squash or even get in some exercise while you’re on holidays at FitNow! gym.

Don’t forget to take advantage of the courtesy bus which operates every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. Book your seat by calling the club on 5881 1455.

More Muster moments

Weddings in an inflatable church is just one of the new attractions being offered to Deni Ute Muster fans this year.

Renowned for its celebration of the iconic Aussie ‘Ute’, the Muster has so much more to explore in 2024.

From heart-pounding performances to family-friendly entertainment, this year’s Muster on Friday and Saturday, October 4 and 5 promises an unforgettable experience for all.

There is nothing else like it in Australia where you can listen to live music from 9am to 11.30pm over two days and eat, shop and drink at catering/vendor sites and bars and take in a varied collection of around the grounds entertainment.

You can attend a circus, watch a bull ride, ferrets racing, and utes battle it out in the sports arena along with motor bikes jumping, or admire the utes in the Show n Shine along with the Mini Muster Mobeels. You can cheer on competitors in the Tradie Challenge, be entertained by the balloon man, sandman, a comedian, whip crackers, wood chop, air shows and fireworks.

Take part in a puppet workshop, the Lego wall, hang out at the family centre, sand pit, or travelling animal farm, have fun at the jumping castle, tea cups, or trackless train.

If you want to add more to your experience once on site, for a fee there is a view from above within a helicopter, or on the ground from a camel.

Many of the amazing activities are well known to Muster fans, but there’s quite a few new ones too. It includes the Paul Bennet Airshows, which promises non-stop excitement and thrills featuring the Wolf Pitts pro, Zivko, Edge 540, and The Sky Aces.

Also new is the side-splitting showdown of creativity and comedy as two contestants go head-to-head in the ultimate trial - building IKEA furniture.

Old Macdonald’s Travelling Farm will deliver a barnyard of adorable creatures, from cuddly lambs, bunnies and alpacas to playful piglets and cheeky chickens - there is something for everyone to enjoy!

Dance your way around the plains with the Guru Dudu Silent Disco crew or for an experience never before seen at the Muster, or get hitched in the inflatable church.

And then there’s the music. The evening concerts will feature two America-based country music acts in Kip Moore and Tyler Hubbard, Aussie chart-topper Amy Shark, John Williamson, Brad Cox, Fanny Lumsden, Brooke McClymont & Adam Eckersley, Amber Lawrence, Sunny Cowgirls, Darlinghurst and 2024 Play on the Plains Battle of the Bands winners Elestial.

The day stage will feature a flurry of amazing local and up-and-coming performers.

It includes 2024 Toyota Star Maker Wade Forster, Bryce Sainty, Cush Ryder, Will Day, Scarlet’s Way, Raechel Whitchurch, Nathan Lamont, Natalie Pearson, Madi Colville Walker, Ella Powell, Dakota

East, Pete Denahy, Deniliquin-based band Groovy Dudes and the Deniliquin Bush Poets.

All of this is included with three nights camping as part of the ticket price, and under-13s are free.

A full schedule is available at www.deniutemuster. com.au, where you can also find an entry form for the driving competitions - Circle Work, Barrel Race and Go to Wo - and the Show n Shine Competition.

A link for ticket sales is also available on the website, or if you’re already in Deniliquin pop out to Muster HQ at the Muster site on Conargo Rd to buy your ticket, buy some memorabilia and check out the Muster Museum.

Head off on a road trip

There’s something uniquely Australian about jumping in your car, cranking the tunes and heading off on a road trip – no fixed destination, no fixed timeframe and no fixed alarms.

For many though, the idea of a solo adventure can be daunting, the fear of the unknown overwhelming. However, it’s entirely possible and even fun. And once your journey is complete, you’ll have a new-found sense of self and confidence that didn’t exist before.

Deni local, and owner of Edward River Caravan Hire, Donna Taylor did just this for two years travelling around Australia after throwing in her corporate career, buying a caravan and heading off into the unknown.

Donna says the key to road tripping solo is to do your research – talk to the experts and those who have gone before you.

“We’re extremely fortunate in the Southern Riverina to have expert local businesses to help you set up your rig – whether it be a car, 4x4, caravan or motorhome.

“They’ll ensure that your tyres and mechanicals are in tip-top condition before you head off, so you have peace of mind on your journey.”

Despite the vast distances she’s covered, Donna says the beauty of the Riverina and the close-knit communities make this area an extremely enjoyable destination to travel solo.

“One of my favourite short getaways is the triangle of Deniliquin, Finley and Tocumwal. It’s only a short distance between each town, but their differences in food, activities and experiences are vast.

“These friendly communities make solo travelling and camping a breeze – you’re never far from help

should you need it, and the colourful characters of each community make an entertaining getaway, one that even city folk will enjoy.

“Tocumwal, sitting on the Murray River, has some of the most beautiful beaches of in-land Australia. It was also home to the largest airbase (McIntyre Field) in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere during World War II. A visit to the Tocumwal Aviation Museum is a must for all history and aircraft enthusiasts.

“While Finley is inland, it boasts a gorgeous, wellused lake, and central caravan parking where you can pull up and enjoy a pie at the renowned Finley bakery, stroll the main street and uncover hidden gems in the local small business. It’s a lovely, quiet spot to relax and refresh after a couple of days of travelling or camping in higher density areas.

“And lastly, Deni where camping beside the Edward River, an anabranch of the Murray is the best of both worlds – CBD parking, riverside camping, the Deni Ute Muster Museum and of course, The Depot Historic Collection. Even if you’re not a rev-head, you’ll be amazed at the collection on display at The Depot”.

If you’re thinking of touring near or far, check out the caravans and motorhomes for hire at edwardrivercaravanhire.com.au.

Stay and Play... Golf in Deni

Deniliquin Golf Club hosts one of the most picturesque courses in the region, and it’s a great functions and entertainment venue as well.

Golfers can enjoy the beauty of this golf course, alongside the kangaroos, kookaburras, Superb Parrots, echidna, goannas, lizards, pelicans and a host of other wildlife that abounds in this paradise of nature.

At its best, Deniliquin golf course with its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses.

If you’re looking for a trip away, the Deni Golf Resort has you covered with a range of packages, built to take the stress out of finding accommodation. Its 22 units overlook the ninth fairway, and are nestled among bushland.

The resort and course are in a superb location on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. It’s just 30m from the resort to the first tee, and it’s a shorter distance to the bushwalk track.

The course perfectly reflects a chance for all golfing standards to enjoy a fun and challenging round.

By modern standards the course is not long — 5817 metre par 72 for men, and 5118 metre par 72 for ladies. However, off the back tees it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered.

Poor shots find the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition.

A feature of Deniliquin golf course is the ‘same day play’ principle that applies. On most days you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 and book your tee off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater for your golfing needs. If you prefer the relaxation of a golf cart, there are plenty of those available too.

After your round on the course, enjoy the club’s facilities or relax under the veranda adjacent the pro shop. Friday nights are a speciality in the clubhouse, when there are meat raffles, great meals and a fun atmosphere where locals will make you welcome. For the latest information on clubhouse opening and activities, phone (03) 5881 1325.

If you want to practise your game, try the undercover driving range, which features an automated ball dispenser and lighting, allowing extended play on your terms. It’s simply a matter of getting a token or swiping your credit card to get a bucket of balls and work on your swing.

Visitors are also encouraged to enter any of the club’s regular competitions, which are on its website. These include a Saturday medley, ladies events on Tuesday and Thursday, and men’s stableford on Wednesday.

A highlight of the winter schedule will be the presentation of the Dirty Dick’s Theatre Restaurant.

Australia’s most popular themed event and theatre restaurant, Dirty Dick’s is a unique entertainment and dining concept based on a medieval theme, with a

comical stage show, magnificent feasting, costumed serving staff, providing non-stop interactive fun in true olden day tradition.

Sing, clap and laugh along as you experience the hilarious antics, madcap merrymaking and funtastic festivities of this unforgettable night.

This amazing experience will come to the Deni Golf Club on Thursday, July 25, with tickets available for $70 per person.

It’s limited seats only, so make sure to book early by going to www.trybooking.com/events/ landing/1222398 or contacting the club on 5881 1325.

Winter in River Country

Perhaps the worst kept secret for those looking to get away is our very own Murray River.

What you might come to find though, is there is still plenty of it to be enjoyed and explored.

From the historical port of Echuca, its paddle steamers and the town itself, to the off-the-beatentrack camping spots, there’s a litany of grounds, camping spots and experiences to explore.

And you don’t have to break the bank to experience River Country at its best.

There are communities with significant history and a host of interesting events.

Perhaps some of the dining and beverage offerings may pique an interest.

The Murray is a vibrant home to many creatives and those looking for absolute quality in their product. Not only is the area a rich source of farm to table fruit and vegetables, it also offers food and beverage experiences in the shape of a number of wineries around the Echuca/Moama region all worth checking out.

If you’re looking to take some time off and pitch a tent or bring your caravan along, there are plenty of spots littered across the Murray River and surrounds where you can find that piece of serenity.

The camping grounds, national and regional parks of interest you might like to check out this winter around include the Gulpa Creek Walk and the Edward River Bridge Campground both found in Mathoura.

If you find yourself closer to Echuca/Moama, there’s the Benarca Campground about 15km from Moama or the Five Mile Picnic Area and mountain bike tracks set right on the picturesque Murray River in Moama. If its something extra or different you’re searching for, try Yanga National Park (pictured above). Sitting on the Murrumbidgee River with plenty of fishing and

camping spots, as well as recently having visitor’s facilities installed, there are a number of free camping spaces for tents, caravans and RVs.

From the Willows campground you can check out such points of interest as the old homestead and wool shed, a still standing reminder of a bygone time.

Please note that some campgrounds require advance booking and incur a booking fee, particularly those located in NSW National Parks. The NSW Nationals Parks and Wildlife Service website can also provide updates on campground access and weather warnings.

RIVER COUNTRY EVENTS

Following is a snapshot of just some of the events on offer in River Country this winter:

Echuca Moama Winter Blues Festival - Thursday to Sunday, July 25 to 28: The Echuca/Moama Winter Blues Festival returns for another year of top notch performers and experiences as the two towns turn into somewhat of an open bar for live music with blues and roots connotations. Set against the cold Winter backdrop of the beautiful Murray River towns of Echuca and Moama, the sounds are sure to be a cure for the winter blues.

Run Echuca/Moama - Sunday, August 4: Run Echuca/ Moama offers courses of varying distances, and is a fundraiser for locals living with disabilities through the Country Living and Respite Service and Opening Doors Project. You can choose to run 21.1km, 10km or 5km. To date, Run Echuca/Moama has funded three homes and 12 units to allow locals with a disability to live independently.

Moulamein Sheepdog Trials - Monday to Thursday, September 2 to 5: Showcasing the skills of the dogs and their owners, as well as the discipline, the Moulamein Sheepdog Trials are a great way to get the family out to a truly rural community event and witness some real talent at hand. As always, bear witness to the relationship between a dog and their owner, the dedication and teamwork that can be seen at the Moulamein Sheepdog Trials.

Lighting up the Murray

Moama Lights is an experience unlike any other.

Crafted and created by the acclaimed design studio Mandylights, Moama Lights is set against the backdrop of Moama’s Horseshoe Lagoon and is a sound and light trail sharing stories from across the region through state-of-the-art installations, projections and cutting-edge moving light technology.

Mandylights is a studio that has excelled in many large projects. It has worked with some of the world’s leading musical artists, including The Backstreet Boys’ Las Vegas residency from 2017 to 2019 and the 2022 European tour for Thundercat.

This year’s Moama Lights display is inspired by the Banjo Patterson poem ‘The Daylight is Dying’. The spectacle begins at twilight, giving you the opportunity to see the landscape and the nature through a different and equally beautiful lens.

Illuminating the night, sending ripples through the water while displaying children’s artwork throughout, this year’s light show is sure to bring in a large crowd.

Making your way through Moama’s wetland and floodplain reserve toward the Moama Wharf, suspended above the water on the walking paths, through the beauty that the natural environment and the lights provide will sure to be an experience.

The event will see the return of spectacular Indigenous artworks crafted by the talented hands of First Nations artist Warrick Keen and, once again, the brilliant Alkina Edwards, a contemporary Yorta Yorta artist from Echuca Moama.

Complementing the light show again this year is the hotly anticipated ice skating, where you can get out on the ice and have a bit of fun. Rules and regulations apply.

Lights runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights only during July. A special low sensory experience will be offered on July 18.

Tickets for Moama Lights are $22 for adults, $11 for children aged 3-16 and $55 for a family of two adults and two children. Children under three can attend for free, but you must indicate their attendance when purchasing your ticket.

Visitors to Moama Lights also get the added advantage of discounts from supporting businesses, which include discounts on meals, accommodation and other visitor attractions.

The ice skating rink will be set up at Moama’s Kerrabee Soundshell, with 24 skating days on offer between June 29 and July 25.

Finley and all it has to offer

With a population of a little over 2,500 people - making it the second largest town in the Berrigan Shire - and being a main contributor to the food bowl that helps feed the entire country, Finley is a town and community with a big heartbeat.

One of the first landmarks you will notice as you arrive in town is the manmade Finley Lake. It is used by locals and visitors alike for water sports and fishing. The lake has served as a spot for travellers and adventurers alike to stop and stretch their legs. It’s an easy 2km walk around this amazing lake, and there are barbecue facilities and a playground for children to use. These features make Finley Lake a perfect starting point when visiting the town and perusing it’s many offerings.

Finley, like many of the town’s in our region, has a strong identity, rich history and sense of community. Steeped in history, the town has a number of spaces, museums and heritage sites to visit and access all year round.

The Finley Historical Museum and Log Cabin allows you to step back in time and see the original Myrtle

Park School originally built in 1896. Once you’re finished there, why not visit the Heritage Museum, which houses examples of some of the region’s important tools and machinery.

Alternatively there is the town’s post office building, which is one of only a few pioneer building’s still standing in town. It houses the Finley Pioneer Railway Museum where you’ll be able to marvel at the artefacts that have shaped the region and town.

A more recent edition to the town’s rich history and preservation of that history is the Foundry Museum, celebrating the rich history of manufacturing in the area. It celebrates the relationship of long-running company JT & EN Close with the town. The museum features equipment up to 120 years-old used by the company in helping to build Finley and district into the community it is today.

As you travel through the town you may notice some of the murals that adorn the sides of buildings - a tip of the hat in an artistic sense to all that has made up the history of the town. Mural themes vary from town’s agriculture and Indigenous heritage to its railway history. And famous Aussies who once called Finley home are also featured, including rock band Spiderbait.

If staying the night, or a few nights, there’s a range of accommodation options available including for those who like camping, caravan parks or the luxury of a hotel.

Discover heritage and charm in Berrigan

Berrigan is a charming country township where historic buildings still tell the stories of yesteryear and vast productive lands stretch for miles.

A historical gem, what you find in Berrigan is reflective of its own beauty and of the people who live there.

Meander along the main street and take some time to read the interpretive plaques that reveal the heritage highlights like the old post office building, Federal Hotel and Memorial Hall.

The Berrigan Government Nature Reserve Tank Paddock is a local initiative that has created an enjoyable walking track through a regenerated indigenous landscape. It is a very peaceful spot for a stroll and is close to the caravan park and swimming pool.

The first Rural Fire Service in NSW was in Berrigan and the community continues to thrive on the early

volunteering spirit. This is celebrated at the Berrigan & District Heritage Museum, as is Berrigan’s role in the first Corowa Conference on Federation in 1893 and the first Parents and Citizens Association in NSW being established in Berrigan.

Local oral histories, Federation information, fire brigade memorabilia and material relating to the Berrigan RSL, including guns, medals and uniforms are important features of the museum. There is an extensive collection of photos and press cuttings of early farming and the coming of irrigation in 1939 via the Mulwala Canal. Materials relating to the Berrigan schools are also featured, including some which no longer exist.

A Heritage town walk brochure in full colour has been produced and this is linked with the main street buildings and corresponding wall plaques. Make sure to check out the Berrigan Heritage Walk, it’s an amazing and really nice way to understand the history of the area.

The town is also home to the largest plantation of Sumo Mandarins in Australia, on the Berrigan Sand Hills at Mowbray Farms.

And for the leisure and sports fans, the community sports club’s 18-hole golf course will do the trick with it’s beautiful and well manicured greens and fairways.
