WHAT'S ON - Winter/Spring 2014

Welcome! Welcome to EchucaMoama and our Winter-Spring edition of What’s On. Winter to Spring is a special time in EchucaMoama.

With plenty of old-fashioned country hospitality and a warm friendly atmosphere, this is one of the state’s most sought after destinations at this time of year. Echuca-Moama will again be the place to be this winter for heart-starting blues and roots music and the perfect antidote for a bad case of the winter blues with its annual Echuca-Moama Winter Blues Festival. To be held from July 25-27, the festival will fill the historic Port of Echuca’s heritage precinct and surrounding venues with more than 40 blues and roots performers from across the country. The Echuca-Moama Country Music Festival at the Moama RSL Club from August 8 to 10 promises to be a fantastic opportunity to see the best of local and interstate artists on show. Non-stop country music over three days is sure to bring in huge crowds. The first weekend in October sees the famous Deniliquin Ute Muster, which this year features Aussie pub rock legend Jimmy Barnes and

Anyone looking for a strenuous workout should consider the annual Sweat vs Steam where runners are pitted against the world’s oldest wooden hulled paddle steamer in a 5km or 12.5km run along the Murray River trails. When it comes to cultural activities, art exhibitions at the various galleries and the annual EchucaMoama Doll Show in July are always popular. History buffs are also well served with the 150 years of rail celebration to be held from September 20-21. Visits from vintage steam trains and the Echuca Historical Society exhibition are just part of a big weekend. No visit to the area would be complete without taking in the Elmore Field Days from October 7-9. In its 51st year, the event is one of the largest of its kind in the country. This has something for everyone, with more than 600 exhibitors on show. The Echuca-Moama district has so much to offer visitors and residents alike and we hope What’s On can help you find what you’re looking for.

Elmore Field Days

9 OCT 7ev-ents

e Elmor E CENTR

Now in its 51st year, the Elmore Field Days is a must event for anyone in Agriculture. Set exactly halfway between Bendigo and Echuca at the point where the Midland Highway becomes the Northern Highway. Elmore might be small, but come October more than 40,000 visitors flood into the town for the annual ‘Field Days’ which is Victoria’s oldest and largest agricultural exposition. Held at the outstanding Elmore Events Centre the Elmore Field days will boast more than 700 exhibitors showcasing the latest technology in farming equipment over three days. Recognised as one of Australia’s leading field days, visitors will travel far and wide to experience what Elmore has to offer. With the only airstrip on the field day circuit, access to Elmore is very easy. Once again organisers have sought to present a range of programs and 12

features that will create plenty of family appeal for farm families as well as visitors from the rural and regional communities throughout north central Victoria. Field Days President Frank Harney is excited by this year’s event. ‘‘The Elmore Field Days is the place to be to check out the latest in technology and innovation,’’ he said. In-paddock demonstrations are a highlight at Elmore on the vast expanses of the Events centre including demonstrations of hay and silage. The Shearing Shed on the Elmore site is always a focus for wool and sheep producers and this year will be no exception with an information packed schedule of events. The five groups in the Elmore Ewes for the

Future Trial will be shorn over the three days. Feature events will be centred on the general interest pavilion with arts, crafts and homewares especially popular with the whole family. Displays will include gardening products, nurseries, and home industries. Over 80 exhibitors will display their wares in the Agribusiness pavilion with the very latest in farming technology and innovations showcased. The popular Ag Art parades take place over the first two days in the Auditorium with the finals on Thursday afternoon. Here participants make a wearable ‘‘work of art’’ including accessories created from materials and items of an agricultural nature found on a farm.

This year the livestock area will feature over 20 exhibitors showing cattle and sheep while the Recreation and Leisure area features countless exhibitors with lots of ideas to get the family away for a break. Frank Harney said after cementing the Elmore Field Days in the agricultural calendar for the past 50 years, the committee is looking to the future and planning for the next 50 years. ‘‘We continue to grow and respond to what our visitors wish to see.’’ ‘‘I think we have done this really well for such a long time. ’’The Elmore Field Days will be open to the public between 8.30am and 5.00pm each day, with admission $18 for adults and $8 for secondary students, while children under 12 are free.

150 Years of Rail

0 SEPT t2rain Echuca station

This year, Echuca will celebrate ‘150 Years of Rail’. In 1864, the railway line was extended from Bendigo to Echuca, connecting the town and the riverboat trade directly to Melbourne. Celebrations will be held on September 20 at the Echuca Train Station, from 10am to 11.30am, boasting the arrival of Steamrail Victoria’s K153 and R761 Class Locomotives. Steamrail Victoria will run short shuttle trips throughout the day, with the celebratory train arriving at the station about 10.30am. Replicating the arrival of the first train 150 years ago, the train will be met by the fanfare of special dignitaries, Echuca Federal Band, local steam traction engines and vintages cars. Echuca Historical Society will host a train/rail photographic exhibition,

release a commemorative booklet and unveil a plaque. Esma Turner will also have her book ‘Bendigo to Murray River Railway’ available for sale. “We are very excited to be celebrating this anniversary and are so glad Steamrail Victoria will be there to help us make the event great with the arrival of the steam train,” committee chair Margaret Hart said. To reserve a spot on a steam train shuttle, contact Steamrail Victoria, phone 9397 1953 or email booking@steamrail.com.au For information on the Echuca celebrations, contact Mrs Hart on 0419 506 254 or email margaret.hart@waterscience.com.au

Deniliquin Ute Muster The annual Deni Ute Muster is back for another year, and organisers for the 2014 event have pulled out all stops in securing a pretty sensational lineup that includes the likes of Spiderbait, Sheppard and Aussie pub rock legend Jimmy Barnes. As the event heads into its 16th year this October, its focus on all things Aussie remains unwavering, with performances coming courtesy of multiple CMC Music Award winner Morgan Evans, Jimmy Barnes and Spiderbait to name a few. Complementing the Australian contingent will be American guests Blackjack Billy, a country outfit who are renowned for their live shows, undeniable fun factor, certified

superstar Gary Allan, and the country-tinged garage strains of veteran act The Mavericks, on their second-ever visit to the country. Muster General Manager Kate Pitt believes it’s an amazing line-up of Aussie and international acts on both Friday and Saturday nights. ‘‘Each year we’re able to raise the bar, and this year, with such a depth of talent, we’ve been able to do it again,’’ she said.

‘‘I’m confident we can break last year’s crowd record, as well as setting new world records for the largest parade of utes and largest gathering in blue singlets.’’ In addition to the musical attractions, the Deni Ute Muster offers activities a plenty across its two days, including the Bull Ride Spectacular, the Australian National Circle Work Championships, the Ute Museum, Carnivale Corner (for the kids), the

Holden Grunt-Off, Holden Barrel Race and Show’n’Shine, in addition to the usual array of trade and food stalls. Tickets for the event, to be held in Deniliquin, NSW, on Friday, October 3, and Saturday, October 4, are available at www.deniutemuster.com.au or available now via the event website.

Echuca Historical Society book launch

AUG 6kers

Wor Echuca rvices e s & Club

Echuca Historical Society will launch a new book, "We Fought the Good Fight – Echuca-Moama’s Anzacs" on August 6. The book, based on letters from the front as published in the Riverine Herald, has been researched and written by Echuca Historical Society members Janet Hollingsworth and John Ferris. “This book is published to honour the men and women who enlisted from the district of Echuca and Moama during World War I,” Janet said. “Our initial thinking was that the book would cover the full 1914 to

1918 war period. However, the short period of the Gallipoli campaign has taken over three years to research and write. “After we started our research, we soon realised that we would have a very large book and there was not enough time to write a full history of the war before Anzac Day 2015. “We made a decision to concentrate on the Gallipoli campaign from April to December 1915.”

They later added stories about the women who volunteered as nurses and the Gallipoli veterans whose Light Horse Regiments served with distinction in the Middle East. “Our stories from the front come from letters written by the service people to their families and friends describing their individual experiences,” Janet said. “These letters were given by those families and friends to the Riverine Herald for publication.

“We hope that this book provides some sense of the experiences of that time in Australian history.” The publication and launch has been sponsored by M Dixon Engineering, Moama RSL Club, Great Aussie Beer Shed and Heritage Farm Museum, Echuca Workers and Services Club and the Riverine Herald. The book launch will be held at 2pm at Echuca Workers and Services Club. Light refreshments will be served.

Victorian Quilters’ spring gathering

Rich River Quilters will host the Victorian Quilters’ spring gathering in Echuca-Moama in October. The quarterly gathering will bring together quilters from all over the state to see local patch work and quilting skills on display. Colleen Wray, secretary of Rich River Quilters, said the Victorian Quilters held a gathering every season, with the autumn gathering held in Geelong and the winter gathering in Melbourne. Last year, the Rich River Quilters group, which has about 35

members, held an exhibition of their locally-made works. “In a way, the Vic Quilters gathering will be more diverse and innovative,” she said. She said the show and tell aspect of the event was the major attraction for the estimated 120 people who would attend - and there would also be dedicated local section called ‘get to know Rich River Quilters’. To this end, Elmore Field Days

Ag Art Wear co-ordinator Lorraine Trewick will display winning garments from the 2014 competition which will be selected for their interest to patch workers, Ms Wray said. “When it’s in your town, you must offer some part of your culture. So you need to think about what is unique to the area. We chose Ag Art – it’s just amazing,” she said. “City people might not have an

appreciation of things lying around on farms.” Ms Wray said the event would differ from local quilt exhibitions because it was more of an information gathering, where there was more critique of work. The spring gathering will be held at Moama Anglican Grammar School on October 25. For information, phone Colleen Wray on 5482 2761.

Customs House Artspace Program The Customs House Artspace in the Echuca Port heritage precinct is an art gallery run by the Echuca-Moama Arts Initiative (EMAI). The Customs House facility has been running since last December and has hosted six shows. With a new exhibition every month, the space provides a changing display of visual art from the local community and further afield. So far EMAI have secured Ross Patterson and Brian Nunan, two significant artists whose internationally renowned art was a delight to see. Other group shows have included Art Amalgamated, featuring a selection of the best artists from Echuca-Moama, as well as Art 12

in February, giving year 12 students from district schools an opportunity to exhibit their artwork in a public space. During July, the local indigenous community will exhibit art from various aboriginal art programs run in the district. There will be demonstrations of traditional basket weaving by Denise Morgan-Bullied, as well as other activities and performances. The show will coincide with 2014 NAIDOC week and the July school holidays.

In August, local contemporary art group Tuesday Junction will host their annual Winter Blues Festival Art Exhibition titled Firing Line. This year the show will feature a group work of pit fired Raku clay masks, and another group work on paper as well as individual art works.

Pro Hart and Brett Whitely earlier in his career. The Customs House Artspace is a volunteer run space open daily from 10am-4pm unless an exhibition is being installed. EMAI is a community organisation aiming to lift the profile of the arts in our region.

September sees the Customs House host a selection of the Shire of Campaspe’s Art collection, along with another significant landscape painter, Mal Gilmour who has exhibited with

The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 9-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria ,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish & chips. Fish in a Flash uses only fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The oyster bar is now a burgeoning part of the business, with oysters available grilled, natural or Kilpatrick, as well as in fritters. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

 Just down

the road

Your journey doesn’t have to end at the town limits. You’ll find plenty to see and do in Echuca-Moama’s surrounding towns. Rochester

23mins from Echuca Rochester was home to Sir Hubert (Oppy) Opperman, legendary cyclist and later politician, whose statue off the main street is a popular stopping point for tourists. The Opperman Sports Museum is situated in the Shire Service Centre next to the Rochester Shire Hall in Mackay street. The museum contains personal memorabilia from Oppy’s sporting and political life including many photos, certificates, awards, trophies and the bike he rode over the last years of his life Several panels have now been installed showing the various sporting clubs and individuals who have contributed to Rochester’s sporting history A heritage walk from the main bridge to the red brick bridge takes in the old saleyards bull ring, the old water tower and shire hall, while the western bank of the Campaspe River has been set aside as a passive recreation reserve. Rochester Historical Society has its headquarter in Rochester’s second public school building, which was built on the High St site in 1874. Campaspe Weir can be reached by travelling south on the Northern Hwy toward Elmore and turning left on to a gravel road after 9km.

Tongala

21mins from Echuca Tongala district was settled by squatters in the 1840s. Irrigation subsequently ensured the success of an intensive dairying industry. The agricultural legacy is captured at the Golden Cow, a community project which provides an insight for tourists, students, farmers and industry personnel into the dairy industry and associated environmental issues. In Tongala, a series of murals depict the evolution of the dairy industry and groundwater issues. Other murals give an insight into the armed forces, while a monument pays tribute to the

Australian Light Horse, and an avenue of honour recalls those who lost their life in the Armoured Corp in Vietnam.

Lockington

33mins from Echuca Lockington is a small country town set in irrigated dairy farming country. Visitors can enjoy a picnic in the landscaped park areas, take a walk following the self-guided heritage walk or choose a route past the mural in the pavilion, the rose garden and Lions flower clock. Bring the fountain to life in the lagoon area and keep your eyes open for the Locky Ness monster. On Sunday afternoons (or by appointment) call in to Lockington and District Living Heritage Complex for a trip down memory lane, while enjoying friendly hospitality.

Rushworth

53mins from Echuca At Rushworth’s fire lookout at Growlers Hill, the view covers the historic gold mining town, Waranga Reservoir, Rushworth Forest and the Goulburn Valley. The 24,300ha box ironbark forest is the largest of its type in Victoria, areas of it covering evidence of the district’s early mining activity. But Rushworth’s history is well preserved at the town’s museum, while historic buildings also remain the heart of the town. Waranga Basin, to the north-east of the town, is a tourist drawcard in the region, providing opportunities for boating, fishing and camping, while south of Rushworth is Whroo Historic Reserve, which represents the remnants of what was once a thriving gold mining town of 1000 people and 139 buildings.

Barmah

31km from Echuca Barmah is the gateway to the World Heritage listed Barmah State Forest which, with the Moira State Park, forms the largest red gum forest in the world. A forest drive from Barmah heads off along River Rd, which is

up and down the Murray. The original weir was replaced in 1996, but major parts have been preserved of the original steel trestles, which were winched out of the river in times of flood.

Pyramid Hill

Gunbower is a gateway to possibly Australia’s largest inland island and a significant wildlife sanctuary, Gunbower Island. The island is home to protected populations of kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes and 160 different species of birds. It is an idyllic location for camping, canoeing and a spot of bushwalking or bird watching. The running of the Gunbower Gold Cup in October is a picnic race day out for all the family.

55mins from Echuca Pyramid Hill is named after the adjacent granite hill with its many interesting rock formations. A cairn on the southern slopes commemorates the explorer, Major Sir Thomas Mitchell, who discovered and named the area in 1836 during his journey into Australia Felix. In spring many varieties of rare wildflowers may be found blooming among the rocks. Other interesting places to visit in the area include Terrick Terrick National Park and Mt Hope, as well as the town’s museum. Terrick Terrick National Park is 20km south-east of the town and supports more than 200 species of native flora, including many rare and threatened species. Scenic drives take visitors to grasslands, granite outcrops, eucalypt woodlands and historical farming sites.

Leitchville

36mins from Echuca Leitchville is in the heart of wetlands, home to vast numbers of waterfowl and native animals and site of palaeontological finds of global importance. Kow Swamp, a few kilometres away, is rich in bird and fish life and is water storage for the Torrumbarry irrigation scheme. A picnic area is on the east side of the lake is complete with swimming area, toilets and barbecue facilities. More barbecue facilities are available at the north end of the swamp, an area commonly used for fishing.

Torrumbarry

19mins from Echuca Torrumbarry offers a camping ground, picnic area, fish ladder and a heritage display and information centre at the weir. A lock operates at the weir, allowing passage for boats travelling

During the first weekend of March, the Cohuna Bridge to Bridge has events for all ages in 8km swim, walk, bike rides, and running categories. The picturesque Cohuna Golf Course is the home course of PGA Tour star Stuart Appleby.

accommodation

Must visit Murray destinations Echuca-Moama’s sheer breadth of accommodation offerings has solidified it as a must-visit destination. Echuca-Moama Tourism chief executive officer Tom Smith said while the organisation is still waiting on the latest visitor numbers for the last six months, earlier statistics are positive.

Mr Smith said while summer was a critical time for accommodation providers, the winter blues festival among other events helped to bolster tourist numbers.

The region received 15.1 per cent more visitors last year than in 2012 according to figures released in Tourism Research Australia’s national visitor survey.

‘‘It attracts a lot of people from the key markets in Melbourne. We also have a campaign running at present - stay for three (nights), pay for two which has been good.’’

‘‘Of all of the Murray destinations, we have the greatest market share,’’ Mr Smith said.

He said the campaign boosted the accommodation sector during quieter times.

The 669,000 visitors topped the past three years, but was down from 708,000 in 2009.

‘‘We’ve got some wonderful accommodation - whether it be waterfront resorts or motels - it’s top of the range. It’s the sheer breadth of options.’’

Visitors spent an estimated $225 million in the region, an average of $130 a night.

Murray Regional Tourism chief

executive Mark Francis said overall the visitor survey statistics were positive. ‘‘In terms of growth able to be achieved by both the Murray and Echuca-Moama regions, to be able to grow total visitors (and) grow total expenditure is terrific.’’

Mr Francis suggested Echuca-Moama Tourism’s campaign and marketing strategies could be linked to an increase in visitor numbers. ‘‘There are developed products that exist in Echuca-Moama, whereas some regions have less,’’ he said.

Echuca-Moama received the most visitors to the Murray region last year (29.3 per cent), which comprises Mildura-Wentworth (19.9), Swan Hill (14.3), Sun Country (18), AlburyWodonga (24.5) and Echuca-Moama.

‘‘Cobram, Tocumwal, Yarrawonga and Mulwala have a lot more camping activity that goes on along the river, whereas Echuca-Moama has a high concentration of caravan parks and accommodation in the centre of town.

Holiday or leisure (60.7 per cent) was the main purpose for visits and eating out at restaurants (55 per cent) was the most popular activity.

‘‘Echuca-Moama also has a very strong wedding market.’

Visitors stayed on average 2.6 nights in the region.
