Kyabram Koala Capers Park. The family-favourite destination is bursting with native wildlife and has added to their attractions with the recent opening of the new koala enclosure. region. The Murray River, with its majestic river red gums, sandy beaches and a large variety of wildlife, provides the perfect backdrop for a unique getaway. Explore natural bushland, creeks and billabongs set amongst hundreds of species of plants, colourful wildflowers and towering gumtrees. Take a relaxing stroll along the river walk and view the many types of birds which can be found nestling in the area. Meander along the WWII Women's Auxillary Australian Air Force Memorial Creek Walk, extending 3.2km from the town centre, enjoy the local native species of flora and wildlife which frequent this area.

The Tocumwal races are on Easter Saturday, April 19. Tocumwal will be a hive of activity this autumn offering some fun and interesting events and attractions for the entire family. The Easter weekend in Tocumwal will feature the Tocumwal Easter Races on Saturday, April 19 at the

Tocumwal Race Course. Gates open 10.30am. On Sunday drop into the Tocumwal Foreshore Market. There will also be demonstrations and tastings at the Visitor Centre. For sports enthusiasts May 10 and 11 will see a big weekend in sport. Starting with Australia’s first Quadrathlon, the Murray Quad. This gruelling event starts in Yarrawonga with the traditional triathlon events of running (20kms), swimming (3km) and cycling (80km) finishing with a 26 km paddle down the Murray River from Cobram ending at the Tocumwal boat ramp. On Sunday the 11th May the Mother’s Day Fun Run will also be held at the Tocumwal Football Ground. Throughout Autumn the Tocumwal Golf Club will have plenty of live music and some exciting Pro Am

competition with the Annual Easter Golf Tournament on again and the PGA Am & Hospital Charity Day being held on May 5th. There are lots of things happening at the Golf and Bowls Club, throughout March, April and May. A highlight will be the Chris Philpot Real Estate Classic Men’s two Bowls Triples on the April 1112 with $6,300 prize money up for grabs. Following this will be the annual Autumn Bowls Tournament on April 13-15. There will also be an Easter Bowls Tournament on again. And don’t forget the many fabulous markets in Tocumwal listed on page 10 and 11. The renovations in the pub continue with a new look façade to the bar happening at present. The rear beer garden has been extended with a kids play area on the horizon. Byramine Homestead and Brewery

istoric Byramine Homestead was built in 1842 by famous explorer Hamilton Hume for his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hume and her nine children after her husband John Hume was killed by a gang of bushrangers, known as the Witten Gang. The homestead is Classified “A” by the National Trust – meaning to be preserved at all costs. The most unique aspect of the house is the octagonal shaped rooms. The home was designed for the climate and for security. The central octagonal room is known as the fortress. It allows a clear view of all angles in case of attack from bushrangers or natives.

Elizabeth named her home “Byramine Homestead” meaning rustic cottage. A beautiful garden was established. The Elm trees planted in 1842 remain today and are the oldest in Victoria. Today the homestead is open to the public as an enchanting memorial to those hard pioneer days so long ago. The recently opened Byramine Brewery is a great addition to the homestead. Situated within the grounds of the Byramine Homestead, it is free to enter the brewery. Wade has developed a unique range of beer for all to enjoy including Bullock and Dray Draught, Stockman’s Stout or the beer that packs a punch, Convict’s Cure. The Brewery has recently released a range of Cider’s

and the homestead also produces its own range of Boutique Wine. Visitors who purchase any two bottles of wine will receive a free bottle of Rose’ valued at $15. Guests are welcome to enjoy a Devonshire tea or light lunch in the garden, on the veranda or by the fire in the dining room of the homestead on those cooler autumn days. Owners Helen Holmberg and Rodney Crawford have loved owning the Yarrawonga Lollyshop for more than a year now and recently closed for two weeks to make some much needed changes to freshen up the shop. “The shop desperately needed a revamp,” said Helen. “We repainted the pick and mix bright pink, freshened up some old tired shelves and purchased new shelves. “The new bamboo flooring has been the best change we have made, as it has created an old fashioned style to our shop. “It is really wonderful to receive such positive feedback on how great W RS 1it2 looks.” Yarrawonga Lollyshop has a wide NE T 20 range of Australian made chocolates OC and lollies, including sugar free varieties, plus Dutch and English

he roar of race boats will return to Lake Mulwala this April as part of the Australian Formula Powerboat Grand Prix (AFPGP) racing series. The circuit style race to be held on April 12 and 13 will be conducted over 650 metres in front of the Mulwala Water Ski Club and Ski Club Holiday Park where spectators will have great views from any vantage point. Formula 1 boats have been likened to Formula 1 race cars and reach a top speed of 230km/h and can accelerate

with relay teams with up to eight people allowed. “Competitors will be able to draw added inspiration from Save the Children’s work helping vulnerable children across every state in Australia and in more than 100 countries, including the Philippines for the response to Typhoon Haiyan, and the Middle East for the Syrian Refugee Crisis.” The race will start at the Yarrawonga Rowing Club with a 3km swim on

Lake Mulwala, before winding its way through the countryside to Cobram and finishing in Tocumwal on the Murray River. The running leg will be 20kms and the ride 80kms for a total distance of 129kms, making the Murray Quad the longest quadrathlon event in the world. 2014 Amulet Highland Games

“

Heavier haggis, more kilts and bigger athletes at this year’s Amulet Highland Games” promises 2014 Amulet Highland Games organiser Ben Clifton. “This is the 6th year that we have held the event at Amulet Vineyard, near Beechworth. We have changed the date to Saturday 3rd May this year in the hope of getting less traditional Scottish weather on the day.” The professional athletes compete in five traditional games, Stone Put, Caber Toss, Weight for Height, Manhood Stones and Binks Stones Carry for the title of Southern

Highlander. Stone Put is a two handed throw of a 22kg rock – longest distance wins Caber toss – athletes lift timber poles weighing 55-75kg and a length of 4.5 – 5.5m in length and toss them end over end. Manhood Stones – limbs of quarts granite liberated from the paddocks of Amulet with weights starting at 96kg to 174kg are lifted and placed onto wine barrels whilst being timed. Binks stones – Two stones that weigh 116kg and 136kg must be carried at the same time for as far as possible. Glen Lachlann Estate College of Arms don their Kevlar woven kilts

Mr Clifton encouraged visitors to “celebrate their Scottish heritage or adopt some for the day and kilt up!” Prizes are awarded for the best dressed on the day. Another way to get involved will be the Haggis Hurl.

“Have a go at throwing this traditional food as far as possible, as has been done for centuries” said Mr Clifton. “There’s something for everybody so bring a chair or blanket but no food or drinks, we’ll take care of that for you.” Clifton adds. ifty years ago The Beatles brought ‘Yellow Submarine’ to our shores, and this June there will be a new Yellow Submarine in Holbrook when the famous HMAS Otway is yarn bombed. Taking place from 11-13 June and coinciding with the Holbrook Sheep and Wool Fair and World Yarn Bombing Day, this art project will see the Holbrook Submarine ‘dressed’ with knitted/crocheted/ woven yellow wool, by artists Michelle Oxley, Jenny Bohner and Donna Pinder. Yarn bombing is a

type of public art that uses colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre to create large scale art projects. You can get involved by knitting/ crocheting/weaving a yellow piece to contribute to the project and send it in before 31 May. Fabric, Fibre and Fotos is the theme at this year’s annual Henty Art and Photography Exhibition, 21-23 March 2014. Opening night will see the unveiling of the Show Society’s 100 Anniversary Quilt featuring

The theme of this year’s exhibition is ‘community’ and will showcase quilting, art and photography from local and guest exhibitors. The exhibition will be open from 10am-5pm Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 March at the Henty Civic Centre, admission is $5. Come along to the 18th annual Morgan Country Car Club Swap Meet, Sunday 30 April and join in the market sales and collectables, along with a display area for Vintage Vehicle Show and Shine. Gates open 6am, with the gates open to the public at 7am. Admission is $5 with kids free. A great day out in Holbrook will be had at the Commander Holbrook Cup Race Meeting, April 12.
