Cape Horn Vineyard P

icture yourself relaxing with family and friends, with a glass of wine in hand overlooking the beautiful Murray River in the surrounds of the lush Barmah Forest. Sounds good? Then a visit to the Cape Horn Vineyard is a must this summer. Located on a sand hill wedged between the Murray and Goulburn Rivers upstream from Echuca and on the very western edge of Western Moira, Cape Horn Vineyard is named after the river bend resembling Cape Horn on the tip of South America. The Vineyard was first planted to Shiraz grapes in the 1800's serving the thriving River Boat trade. The property is owned by Sue and Ian Harrison and the Vineyard has been re-established, with the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay,

Shiraz, Durif, Marsanne and Zinfandel vines Their philosophy is to produce high quality boutique wines that reflect the vineyards' distinct microclimate, rich sandy soils and native eucalypt surrounds, whilst maintaining fruitdriven varietal characteristics. Cape Horn Vineyard has sprawling lawns with plenty of room for the kids to run around while the rest of the family relaxes and is also dog friendly due to the Harrison’s own affection for two very loveable resident Labradors. Today Cape Horn Vineyard offers visitor’s tastings at the cellar door of a fine selection of wines made from their own fruit. Guests are encouraged to pack a picnic and take the trip to the vineyard. Phone the cellar door 03 5480 6013 for more information.

Chrysties Experience

C

hrysties Museum in Tocumwal is one of the best private collections of eclectic antiques, collectibles and rare finds you will ever come across. It is the result of more than 70 years collecting so it is no surprise to discover it is spread over four acres. “I don’t think we could be called just a car museum or a collectables store because we have something here for everyone,” George Chrystie, owner and namesake of Chrysties Museum said. George indeed is true to his word and prides the museum on having one of everything ever produced in the 20th Century. From his prized Ford Zephyrs and 1930s-40s caravans, one of a kind tractors even many farmers would never have seen before, hundreds

of old kerosene lamps to old newspapers and magazines, if you can think of something made from metal or wood, chances are George has one. Chrysties Museum is located just out of Tocumwal on Thorburns Road and is open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm, phone 03 5874 3358 for more information.

A jam-packed day of events offers something for the whole family to enjoy including children’s rides, Easter egg scramble, the incomparable ‘kite man’, food and market stalls. Byramine Homestead and Brewery

H

istoric Byramine Homestead was built in 1842 by famous explorer Hamilton Hume for his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hume and her nine children after her husband John Hume was killed by a gang of bushrangers, known as the Witten Gang. The homestead is Classified “A” by the National Trust – meaning to be preserved at all costs. The most unique aspect of the house is the octagonal shaped rooms. The home was designed for the climate and for security. The central octagonal room is known as the fortress. It allows a clear view of all angles in case of attack from bushrangers or natives.

Elizabeth named her home “Byramine Homestead” meaning rustic cottage. A beautiful garden was established. The Elm trees planted in 1842 remain today and are the oldest in Victoria. Today the homestead is open to the public as an enchanting memorial to those hard pioneer days so long ago. The recently opened Byramine Brewery is a great addition to the homestead. Situated within the grounds of the Byramine Homestead, it is free to enter the brewery. Wade has developed a unique range of beer for all to enjoy including Bullock and Dray Draught, Stockman’s Stout or the beer that packs a punch, Convict’s Cure. The Brewery has recently released a range of Cider’s

and the homestead also produces its own range of Boutique Wine. Visitors who purchase any two bottles of wine will receive a free bottle of Rose’ valued at $15. Guests are welcome to enjoy a Devonshire tea or light lunch in the garden, on the veranda or by the fire in the dining room of the homestead on those cooler autumn days. The autumn menu includes delights such as vegetable quiche, Byramine Shiraz Pasties, Farmer’s Sausage Rolls, hearty soups and the traditional Ploughman’s Lunch. The Byramine Homestead Menu is created around the produce being harvested in the huge vegetable farm surrounding the homestead and

More than just a sweet treat

C

orowa Chocolate and Whisky is more than just a place to buy your favourite sweet treats. The iconic Corowa chocolate, as divine as it is, is no longer the only drawcard to this eatery that has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Since taking back management of its kitchen early in 2013, Corowa Chocolate Whisky has been delighted of the services provided by new head chef Celestine Emeghebo, who hails from Nigeria. A quality chef, ‘Cel’ is highly skilled in both Spanish and French cuisine and has added his own alternative twist to many familiar favourites on the menu. “Cel is very highly skilled in what he does,” Corowa Chocolate and Whisky Manager Dean Druce said. “I will happily proclaim he is the best chef in all the lands but we will let the customers find that out for themselves; they are in for a treat.”

“Eliza has come on in leaps and bounds,” Cel said. “She is very skilled and has shown she can handle the kitchen herself which is very good for someone so young.” Having added a creative twist to the popular menu, Cel and Dean have been pleased with the feedback from their well-dined customers. “The response so far has been outstanding,” Dean said. “We have two brilliant people doing a brilliant job and we couldn’t be happier.” Cel said he has enjoyed the response from the people of Corowa, who he says are “great people”. “They are all very welcoming, I am very much enjoying Corowa.” So this summer, why not try out Corowa Chocolate and Whisky for a meal; their locally sourced ingredients put together with such skill are a definite pleaser for singles or groups.

his year Pfeiffer Wines is celebrating a significant milestone, its 30th anniversary! Managing Partner and Senior Winemaker Chris Pfeiffer reflects “2014 is a significant year for Pfeiffer Wines as it represents 30 years since Robyn and I attended that auction that saw the birth of Pfeiffer Wines. A lot has happened in that time and the potential of our winery / distillery continues to reveal itself. We are fortunate to have such an attractive site and we have both enjoyed coaxing it back to life.” And indeed they have. From its humble beginnings the winery has certainly grown over the years, yet it manages to retain its heart and soul. Today, it remains a family run, family owned winery, which aims to deliver a warm, welcoming experience to all of its visitors. At its beginning, Pfeiffer Wines offered just four wines. Over the

Rutherglen Estates is the perfect place to visit this autumn. available for tasting make sure you try the exciting range at cellar door. Italian white varietals such as Fiano and Arneis, are relative new comers to the Australian wine scene and have been well received by media, our cellar club members and cellar door visitors alike. Both are fantastic food wines and match well with seafood, oil based pastas and anti-pasta platters. When thinking of red wines, our Spanish varietal, Tempranillo is

proving to be a real winner. It is medium bodied and is very drinkable, yet is sophisticated and elegant with great length. Tempranillo is a great food wine and goes very well with most things. We recommend Spanish paella or lamb skewers on the barbecue. Of course you can also sample the wines our region is most well-known for – Durif, Shiraz and Muscat. Whatever wine style you enjoy, we have something for everyone.

Redefining the traditions of one of the world’s best fortified wine regions We bear the name of one of the oldest and most recognised wine regions in Australia and our mission is to produce the most regionally typical premium wines most suited to the Rutherglen region. ohn Gehrig, a fourth generation vigneron, established our vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976, only minutes from the Milawa Gourmet Region. John’s son Ross has taken on the challenge of guiding the fifth winemaking generation of Gehrig’s to craft some fine wines. Armed with a wine science degree, international winemaking

experiences in Alsace, Burgundy and Israel, Ross’s obsession with producing the best grapes to produce wines of distinction that will pay homage to this iconic Northeast Victorian winery. Heavier haggis, more kilts and bigger athletes at this year’s Amulet Highland Games” promises 2014 Amulet Highland Games organiser Ben Clifton. “This is the 6th year that we have held the event at Amulet Vineyard, near Beechworth. We have changed the date to Saturday 3rd May this year in the hope of getting less traditional Scottish weather on the day.” The professional athletes compete in five traditional games, Stone Put, Caber Toss, Weight for Height, Manhood Stones and Binks Stones Carry for the title of Southern

Stone Put is a two handed throw of a 22kg rock – longest distance wins Caber toss – athletes lift timber poles weighing 55-75kg and a length of 4.5 – 5.5m in length and toss them end over end. Manhood Stones – limbs of quarts granite liberated from the paddocks of Amulet with weights starting at 96kg to 174kg are lifted and placed onto wine barrels whilst being timed. Binks stones – Two stones that weigh 116kg and 136kg must be carried at the same time for as far as possible. Glen Lachlann Estate College of Arms don their Kevlar woven kilts

Another way to get involved will be the Haggis Hurl.

“Have a go at throwing this traditional food as far as possible, as has been done for centuries” said Mr Clifton. “There’s something for everybody so bring a chair or blanket but no food or drinks, we’ll take care of that for you.” Clifton adds.
