WELCOME TO THE BEST OF
Echuca-Moama
Here in Echuca-Moama we should be preparing for the twin towns’ biggest events of the year — the Southern 80 ski race and the Riverboats Music Festival. Here in Echuca-Moama we should be preparing for the twin towns’ biggest events of the year — the Southern 80 ski race and the Riverboats Music Festival. We should be hearing more ski boats along the Murray River, while festival organisers begin to organise the aquatic reserve in readiness for our highly anticipated festival. We should be doing a lot of things. But because of COVID-19, we’re not. And for that, we would be forgiven for taking the cancellations — which equate to millions of dollars for our economy — to heart. But of course, that would not be the Echuca-Moama way. Instead, we remind ourselves of everything our twin towns have always had
but perhaps (at times) have been somehow forgotten. So read about Echuca’s most popular Murray River beaches. Or the National Holden Museum, which is preparing to open its doors to people soon. Take a look at the three meetings scheduled at Echuca Racing Club and find out what’s on at Rich River Golf Club’s mini-golf course. We also speak to Echuca Historical Society, Alton Gallery and Echuca-Moama Theatre Company about what’s coming up. Although our biggest events will not be held next year, we do have plenty to be grateful for. This is Echuca-Moama after all. Take care, Tyla Harrington Editor

BOWLS WILL STARTb2021 with a ang The Bowls Premier League event scheduled for February at Moama will go ahead as planned, but will now also host the BPL Cup National Finals. Michael Walker (pictured) and the Murray Steamers claimed victory in BPL11 at Moama earlier this year. 12
WHAT’S ON Summer 2020-21
SOME of Australia’s best bowlers are set to roll into Moama again in February as the sport looks to make a big comeback. After a large part of 2020 was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Moama Bowling Club (MBC) is looking to kick off the new year with a bang. All eyes of the bowls world will descend on the twin towns between February 23 and 26 as the Bowls Premier League starts with a bang. “We’re really looking forward to welcoming back not just the players but the spectators as well,” MBC’s sport venue manager Zane MikinLaurie said. “Obviously it’s a bit unclear how many people we might be able to have at once but we’re still hopeful of having a significant crowd. “At some points of the event in February 2020 we had up to 400 people in attendance. “The event really turns the idea of what bowls is on its head. We’d encourage people of all ages to get along and have a look.” There will also be a curtain raiser in the days leading up to the event — the BPL Cup, a qualifying event for the main draw, which attracts state champions. “This is another event of really high quality,” Zane said. “We’ve obviously missed out on having these big events this year and we can’t wait to have them back. “Having spoken to a few of the players I can tell they’re eager to come back to Echuca-Moama and put on a show for the home fans. “We’re looking forward to a massive 2021 as a club and can’t wait to see what this summer is going to have in store for us.” All of the events are free to attend. More details can be found on the Moama Bowling Club website or social media channels. WHAT’S ON Summer 2020-21

RACING ACTION IS HEATING UP IT MAY well be hard to decide what’s hotter this summer. The temperature in Echuca-Moama or the action at Echuca Racing Club. There are currently three meetings scheduled across the next four months, starting with the pre-Christmas meeting on December 2. Then attention will turn to two of the biggest days on the club’s racing calendar. The New Year’s Eve meeting will provide the perfect lead in to 2021. Scheduled for December 31, the day will attract some of the premier horses from across the region. And the Moama Bowling Club Echuca Cup will once again take centre stage on the Sunday of the Victorian Labour Day weekend on March 7. Echuca Racing Club general manager Garry Armstrong said he was excited by the prospect of what lay ahead. “We’re looking forward to hosting these events after a busy start to the season,” Garry said.

WHAT’S ON Summer 2020-21
“We’ve already hosted several meetings since August and our staff have been doing a terrific job to keep the track in fantastic condition. I’d expect that to continue even when the weather does warm up. “When it is safe to do so we can’t wait to welcome back members and the general public to our facilities. “People can be assured the necessary COVID-19 protocols will be put in place and followed. “We have and always will endorse a family friendly atmosphere and hope that can continue. “We’re excited about what the summer months are going to bring.” More meetings could potentially be scheduled at Echuca as the need arises. FULL STEAM AHEAD
for visitors
IT’S full steam ahead — quite literally — this summer through the Port of Echuca and on the Murray River.
As regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne become one again, and the Victoria/NSW border restrictions are removed, Echuca’s iconic paddlesteamers will again be charging down the mighty Murray. Rohan Burgess, director of Murray River Paddlesteamers, said it was good to be in a position to welcome back their Melbourne guests. “We’ve been preparing for this moment for quite a while now,” Rohan said. “We returned to business for regional Victoria as soon as we could, and as a result we have been fortunate to be operating for quite a while. “But now having full access to all of Victoria, which is a major market for so many of us in the tourism industry, is a fantastic outcome. “From the second it was announced the ring of steel was coming down to allow metropolitan Melbourne into the regions, our
phones didn’t stop ringing and our website has had exceptional traffic.” With limited numbers on board each paddlesteamer as part of their COVID-safe plan, it may sound like you might struggle to get on board one of the paddlesteamers during the summer months. But Rohan isn’t going to let you miss out. “We want to be out on the water,” he said. “We want to be taking as many people out on the river as we can every day. “If the demand for the service is there, then we will try and get the extra services running whenever we can. “We want to see business — not just our own — but all across Echuca-Moama up and running again. “Hopefully as the summer months continue, we can show our mighty river to as many people — and as safely — as possible.” WHAT’S ON Summer 2020-21

MINI GAME IS
HUGE FUN
WHAT started as a light bulb moment came to fruition in 2019 when Rich River officially opened the club’s mini golf course. After chief executive Shane Gloury raised the prospect at the beginning of that year, the club knew it was a missing element from their entertainment offering. And since then the light bulb has been shining brighter than ever. “We moved fairly quickly and it’s come up a real treat,” Rich River president Peter Boek said when the course opened last year. “It’s a significant step up from the old putt-putt where you were hitting it off planks and bricks. “We’re pleased to offer a true mini golf course. For someone who wants to try and read a green it’s quite challenging.” This new element to the club means people who may not know a whole lot about the sport can take small steps towards taking up golf. “We’re hoping people who wouldn’t usually come to Rich River visit and utilise the course along with our other facilities,” Peter said. 24 WHAT'S ON Summer 2020-21
“Some of these people might get an actual taste for the game of golf itself which would be terrific.” The course is open seven-days-a-week between 8 am and 10 pm, with prices starting at $10 for adults, $8 for children between five and 17, and $5 for kids under five for nine holes.

LIFE'S A BEACH
at Echuca-Moama With the summer heat starting to settle in, it’s the perfect time to scope out the best spot to spend a day by the river. Locals may already have their go-to hangout, but if you’re new to town or looking for somewhere fresh, we’ve ranked the best beaches along the Murray River. As always, it’s important to take care when swimming in rivers, anyone that uses the river needs to understand and be aware of the dangers. Moama Beach There aren’t many better places to spend an afternoon in Moama than this centrally located beach. It’s also the most picturesque beach of the lot; swim below the iconic Echuca-Moama bridge and catch a glimpse of the old Echuca wharf, while watching the paddle steamers glide past. A lot of work has been put into the site, with stairs and an accessibility ramp providing access to the water’s edge. Depending on when you go the sandbar itself may be quite slim, but there’s plenty of space to relax riverside on the grass. Barbecues, shaded picnic tables and plush 28 WHAT'S ON Summer 2020-21
grass areas are all available and there is plenty of car parking space — including disabled spots. An information board provides some history of the bridge and features a map of walking tracks and nearby sites to explore. There are no toilets at the beach itself, but there are facilities available a short drive away near the Kerrabee Sound Shell if needed. To get there turn onto Blair St off Meninya St and follow the sign to Moama Beach. Wills Bend Less than 20 minutes’ west of Echuca, Wills Bend offers two separate sandbars each with its own camping area and drop toilets.
The wide, sandy riverbanks are situated on the Victorian side of the river, sheltered by large trees and surrounded by nature. There is plenty of space to set up for the day, or a week, with grassy areas for a picnic and plenty of shade. It’s also serviced by a convenient boat ramp between the two sandbars. Sandbar 2 is the nicer of the two spots, as it’s less exposed and has nicer sand. However, sandbar 1 is closer to the main road. To get there head out of Echuca on the Murray Valley Hwy and turn off at O’Dwyers Rd. Follow this until you see the Wills Bend Reserve sign, which will point you to the right for sandbar 1 and left for sandbar 2.
Betts Beach Not far from Christies Beach, Betts Beach is very similar with a small sandbar and camping along the river cliff edge. There are no facilities at this beach, but it’s a nice quiet spot to set up camp along the Murray and enjoy being surrounded by nature. To get there turn off Bangerang Rd onto Simmie Rd and follow the signs to Betts Beach. Take care on the dirt roads especially after rain — potholes are common.
Christies Beach Just 15 minutes east of Echuca, Christies Beach is a quiet camping spot by the river. While there’s only a small sandbar, camping is allowed right along the steep riverbank and large trees provide dappled shade. Most of the river’s edge is steep and inaccessible except for the small section of sandy bank. There are some facilities with picnic tables, fireplaces and drop toilets — which are near the camping site but depending on where you set
Banyule State Forest Beach This large sandbar is quite steep and a bit rugged. Its convenient location to town means it’s a good spot for a quick swim on a hot day, but there are nicer places to spend an afternoon. It’s also a popular spot for taking the dogs for a walk off the leash or having a swim. Camping is not permitted and there are no facilities. To get there turn off Pakenham St and follow Middle Track all the way to the end.
up may be further away than you’d like. To get there turn off Bangerang Rd onto Simmie Rd and follow the signs to Christies Beach. The dirt tracks are riddled with potholes so take care.

Christ Church Anglican is one of the buildings designed by William Vahland.
TAKE A WALK THROUGH HISTORY WHY not discover the Echuca of old with a stroll back in time. Echuca was founded by ex-convict Henry Hopwood in 1850, whose punt was the only way of crossing the Murray and Campaspe rivers — and the town became known as Hopwood’s Ferry. 32 WHAT'S ON Summer 2020-21
Port of Echuca The Port of Echuca was once a bustle of activity, with the wharf loading and unloading paddle steamers overflowing with wool which would then be sent to Melbourne by rail.
Many of the two-storey buildings erected during a time of optimism in the 1870s can still be seen in High St today. But by 1900 rail became the preferred method of transporting goods and businesses moved south of the river to prime positions near the railway. The Port of Echuca was re-created in 1974 and now you can stroll along the wharf, drop into the Discovery Centre or enjoy a horse and cart ride around town. Old Police Station — Echuca Historical Society At 1 Dickson St is the former police station, now inhabited by the Echuca Historical Society Museum. The station was built in 1867 and was last used as a police station in 1969. In 1876, the wings and cells were added and are still standing now. 582 High St One of Echuca’s earliest shops built by Henry Hopwood soon after he put his first punt across the Murray River in 1854. In the years since it’s been used as a drapery, bicycle shop, furniture mart and craft cottage. St Mary’s Parish At 130 years old, St Mary’s Parish has stood the test of time. A few days after its official opening the Riverine Herald described “the magnificent church just completed ... which is a most striking mark to the architecture of the town”. The opening and dedication of the church was conducted on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 1890. Echuca Water Tower The Echuca Water Tower is on the corner of High and Pakenham Sts — and has been since 1915. When it was built, the tower had a capacity of 150,000 gallons and was connected to a steam-powered pumping plant at Echuca East. It was designed by civil engineer John Monash and replaced two earlier water towers, which were built in Heygarth St in the 1860s.
William Vahland, Goldfields Architect As you walk around Echuca many of the finest buildings you see are the work of German architect William Vahland. He was prolific in northern central Victoria and worked in Echuca one day a week. His work tended towards the Italian Renaissance style, with lushly decorated facades, and he used the iconic sloping mansard roof in many public buildings. You can admire his work on a self-guided walk around town which includes stops at the Town Hall, Court House, Bank of New South Wales, Bank of London and Christ Church. He died aged 87 in July 1915 and is buried at the Bendigo Cemetery. A walking map of Vahland’s buildings is available at the Echuca Moama Tourism office and the Echuca Historical Society Museum. A Heritage Walk brochure put together thanks to the hard work of the Echuca Historical Society is also available, with plaques providing extra information at sites of significance. LOCAL WWII STORIES BROUGHT TO LIFE To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Echuca Historical Society has put together an exhibition that will take you on a journey like no other.
34 WHAT'S ON Summer 2020-21
>>
>> Echuca in Uniform 75 years ago — The Untold Stories, at the museum at 1 Dickson St, is a collection of stories from local men and women who sacrificed so much during the war. It follows the narrative of people such as Herbert Andrew and Arthur Denyer, who both hailed from Echuca and enlisted in the 2/22nd battalion. The exhibition highlights the soldiers involved in heavy conflict, and others, who while not on the front line, were every bit as important. The day Japan accepted allied demands for unconditional surrender on August 14, 1945, one of the soldiers in the exhibition was present at the signing to end the war with the Japanese. For some, it was an adventure and for others, they believed it was their duty to defend their country. The exhibition tells the stories of people who lived in Echuca and surrounding areas who then changed into uniform and went on to fight in the war years, serving their region and country in so many ways. It is supported by the Victorian Government and Victorian Veterans Council. Information and educational notes along with photo displays, maps, uniforms and other objects complement the exhibition. The exhibition will run until February, 2021. If you can’t make it to EHS and wish to learn more about the town’s rich history, you can through a series of videos. “History is often presented in a dry boring manner and we have tried to ‘do it differently’,” EHS president Dot Hammond said. “More and more people are wanting information in an interesting format, it was also to give those who were locked up at home something different to view and keep our name in the media.” Each video, spanning about 20 minutes each, tells a different part of the town’s history, from its discovery and building of monumental structures up until now. While there are only a small number of videos online at the moment, the team has a long list of ideas for future work.
“The list is just endless, but we really want to continue this project,” Dot said. “This is quite a costly operation, though thanks must go to Vast Creative and Mick Coventry for their generous donation of time and to Campaspe Shire for the Community Grants funding which allowed this project to get off the ground.” For information, email eh.soc@bigpond.com or echucahistoricalsociety.org.au You can also find the videos online at: echucahistoricalsociety.org.au/video

AUSSIE ICON IS STAR OF THE SHOW IF YOU want to walk alongside the history of an Aussie icon, then you don’t need to look any further then the National Holden Museum. Located at 7-11 Warren St, Echuca, the facility is home to 52 vehicles which showcase just how far the Holden has come in Australia. Owners Mark and Tony Galea, who are not related, are looking forward to welcoming people back to their site after an extended shutdown due to COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria. “We’re always excited to show off our collection to locals and visitors to Echuca-Moama,” Tony said. “One of the great things about the display is that it is always changing so when people do come back it may well be very different to last time.” When their doors do finally re-open, the boys will also have some new cars to show off. And to say they’re excited about them would be an understatement. “We’ve got one of the last Caprices made by Holden now on display,” Tony said.
“It has an interesting story because it is made up from all the leftover parts of the other cars. That means the interior is different to the other ones. “The car has actually never been on the road and only has 20km on it. “Then we’ve also got the last Holden ute off the production line. No more utes being made in Australia was a major moment in the country’s history. “We’re very lucky to have those types of cars on display.” Even if you aren’t normally a car person, Tony said he would encourage everyone to come down and have a look. “There’s something for everyone,” he said. “We will do our best to make sure everyone has a great experience at the National Holden Museum.” WHAT’S ON Summer 2020-21 39
GALLERY OPENS ITS DOORS AGAIN Veronica Lamb at the Alton Gallery for a previous exhibition.
THE ALTON Gallery in Echuca has come out of COVID-19 hibernation, ready to show you what you’ve been missing in the world of art. The calendar is filling up fast and you won’t be disappointed by what’s in store for the end of this year and 2021. The Echuca Moama Artists group will kick things off with a Floral Essence exhibition this month. The gallery will be full of spring delights with a range of artworks with a strong theme of — you guessed it — florals. The exhibition will feature paintings in up to 60 different mediums, from oil to acrylic and beyond,
as well as some jewellery pieces to top it off. Starting in December and running until January, Echuca artist Scott Robinson will be back at Alton to show off his most recent work. His exhibition will feature his new collection of tasteful female forms and portraits. ArtLife members from Deniliquin will then take over the gallery from February until March. This exhibition will feature 60 paintings and images that have previously been shown at the Peppin Centre in Deniliguin.

The paintings and works will cover a range of styles and materials including oil paints, watercolour, acrylic and some with a mix of different media. The Echuca Moama Artists will be back again during April, May and June just in time for Easter. This is an exhibition with a cause as the artists raise money for Echuca Regional Health. About 50 artists from around the area, NSW and Melbourne will display works of different mediums, all to be sold and all proceeds going to the worthy cause. In July and August, Sandra Thomas will grace the Alton Gallery with an exhibition of her paintings and works. And during September and October next year,
young local artist Aiden Lamb will be back for his second show at the gallery. In this Tattoo exhibition, he will be presenting new ink art he has been working on for the past 12 months. More details and specific dates for these exhibitions will be released closer to their opening dates. You can find more information on the Alton Gallery’s Facebook page.

AUSTRALIA DAY goes digital A LONG list of events have gone ahead differently, if at all, due to COVID-19 and next year’s Australia Day celebrations won’t be an exception. Instead of the usual gathering of almost 400 people in either of the twin towns, the 2021 event will be going digital. “The safety of our community is of the upmost importance to the Rotary Club of Echuca Moama,”
the club’s Australia Day committee chairman Mike Stansbury said. “Because a majority of our audience is the older generation, we decided creating a video for everyone to view on their own would ensure our

celebrations stay COVID-19 safe.” Thanks to $20,000 worth of funding from the National Australia Day Council, the Rotary club will bring the celebrations to you in your own home. While the day would usually include a breakfast ceremony, performers and ambassador speeches, this will all be filmed separately and put together as one video which will be available on a specially-made website. “We will hold an invite-only special dinner at the Moama Bowling Club on January 19 where we will announce the winners of our Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year awards,” Mike said.
“We will have local performers Drew Walker and Courtney Monaco and Uncle Rick Ronnan to record their performances and a Welcome to Country as well as a flyover from the Echuca Aero Club. “We have also chosen an ambassador to say a few words and have footage of our winners being announced at the dinner as part of the video too. “It will be a lot of elements we’re used to seeing, just not in person.” You can view the video online at emaustraliaday.com.au from January 24. And one of the best ways to do that is on a paddleboard, cruising down the Murray River and taking in the sights nature has to offer. Echuca Moama Stand Up Paddle is an ideal way to spend your day this summer. Owner Jess Snelson wants to make your journey along the river as perfect as possible. “SUP is an incredible experience,” she said. “Getting to take in the best of nature around the Murray, through to going through the port, seeing the new bridge area, there is so much to see and being on a board is as good of a way to do it as possible. “You’re out there on your own — even when you’re with a group of friends or family, it’s just you in the moment on the river, taking in that experience. “We also run sunrise and sunset trips that give you the most incredible views, it’s a great activity to be a part of.” SUP caters to the more experienced paddlers, all the way down to those who have never been on a board before. And SUP will do everything they can to make sure your experience is not only enjoyable, but safe as well. For information, check Echuca Moama Stand Up Paddle’s Facebook page.

48 WHAT’S ON Summer 2020-21
HAVE you ever wanted to try a more luxurious version of camping? Then look no further than Gannawarra Shire’s glamping experience at Koondrook, which is expected to open later this year. The site will feature six safari-style tents, all including an ensuite, kitchenette and a private deck overlooking the beautiful Gunbower Creek and Forest. Users will also have access to a fire pit area and canoe launch. And if you are up for a bit of hiking, it is only a short walk to the Gunbower Forest as the site is connected to the nature reserve via a newly constructed footbridge over the creek. There are also links to a 3km looped walking track where you will be able to experience the historic Condidorios Bridge.
Gannawarra Shire’s economic development manager Roger Griffiths said council was excited to be able to offer this experience to tourists. “We think this is really going to take the Koondrook nature reserve to the next level,” he said. “It’s something very different to what we’ve offered in the past and is a good way for people to experience the beautiful natural surrounds of our area. “We’re hoping the facility will be open in late November or early December. “I would encourage everyone to come and experience Koondrook because I don’t think you will be disappointed.” More information is available by contacting Gannawarra Shire or on council’s website. WITH the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 became the year of home exercise. Everyone and their dog was riding, running, or hitting the home gym. Now, it’s time to test those fitness levels. The Cohuna Bridge to Bridge is back in 2021. But it may not look quite the same. With the 2020 event one of the last run before COVID-19 hit, the next is expected to be a major event on the road to recovery, either as a live event or a virtual event. Organiser Jess Holgate said while many elements of the race remained up in the air, the March 14 running was locked in. “There’s obviously still COVID to work through,” she said. “But on top of that we have a few upgrades being made to the area which
may mean some changes to the course. “But that’s not a concern for us because we are ready to get the race going. “If we have to make some changes to the layout, we will. If we have to make the event virtual, we will. “The most important thing is that we get this race up and running. “We’ve started our discussions with Cohuna District Hospital about what we will raise money for with the event, so it will absolutely go ahead this year no matter how different it looks.” To keep track of any changes and all information for the Cohuna Bridge to Bridge event, head to: bridgetobridge.org.au or follow the Bridge to Bridge Facebook page.

Rehearsals are expected to start soon for the group’s next production - a play called Barbecue - planned for late February/early March 2021. Members have also been busy over the past few months tidying up The Shed through weekly working bees. “Our costume wardrobes have been tidied up and we intend to have a ‘$2 day’ at The Shed on December 5, from 10am to 2pm,” Mrs Summers said. “We will also have a ‘come and meet us’ day where we invite anyone interested in theatre to come to our rehearsal shed for a look around and to meet and talk to some of our members. “These plans are reliant on whatever COVID-19 restrictions are still in place at the time.” Little Shop of Horrors, which was postponed twice, is expected to be the 2021 mid-year musical, dependent on confirmation of tentative June bookings. “The possibility of a junior show next year has not been considered at this stage, but we can only hope that we will be able to make our junior members happy,” Lesley said. A sign at the entrance to the Whroo Historic Area.
STEP BACK IN TIME ATWhroo The historic township of Whroo is a great place to take a step back in time to the days of the gold rush.
Gold was first discovered there in 1853 and the Balaclava mine went on to produce more than £1,000,000 worth of gold — one of the largest mines in north-central Victoria. 56 WHAT'S ON Summer 2020-21
The discovery brought thousands of hopeful diggers into the area, creating a thriving township complete with a church, stores for food and supplies, and even a cemetery. There’s not a lot left of the old township but it’s an interesting place to explore, and the eerie atmosphere makes it feel like a true ghost town. A good place to start your visit is the (no longer functional) visitor centre, built in the 1980s, which has a map of the site, toilets and picnic tables.
It’s also the starting point for the 1.2 km Balaclava Mine Circuit Walk, which leads to two viewing platforms overlooking the large, open-cut mine. From there you can walk to the Balaclava Battery Dam and cyanide vats, and get a glimpse of how the gold was extracted from clumps of clay at the restored puddling machine. An Aboriginal waterhole and the crumbling cemetery can be accessed by car or on foot, not far from the visitor centre. For a longer stay or to enjoy a night under the stars, the nearby Greens Campground is free and has drop-toilet facilities. The town of Rushworth has also maintained much of its gold rush era character and is a great place to stop for lunch after exploring Whroo. Rushworth is a 50-minute drive from Echuca and Whroo is less than 10 minutes further south.

CHANGING THE WORLD
with art
HUMANS have been using tools for more than three million years, while the wheel was invented circa 3500 BC. Chess has its origins in India’s Gupta empire, while Alfred Nobel patented dynamite in 1867. COVID-19 isn’t the only thing that has changed our world. As long as man has walked the earth, everything has been evolving and adapting. And in 2021, Rochester Mural Festival will celebrate humanity’s impact, with its theme of ‘It Changed Our World’. Organiser Judy Anderson said she hoped to see the theme lead to exceptional art from participants in next year’s festival. “We thought it was a very fitting theme … considering what has happened,” she said. “Our world has been impacted so heavily by the pandemic, and that’s going to be something which is going to have an impact on us for a long time. “But there have been so many other moments which have changed our lives.
“We want to see our artists open their minds to what in our history inspires them, what has impacted them and what stories they are going to be able to tell in their paintings.” Rochester Mural Festival will take place from March 13 to March 20. Judy said she hoped to see more artists put their hands up to be a part of the event for the new year. “The mural festival is always a fantastic opportunity,” she said. “But in a time where art has been impacted by an artist’s ability to paint and to display, we look forward to giving artists a major opportunity to display their work to the public. “There has been an increase in prize money and in the financial benefit to our artists, and hopefully that will lead to some incredible displays being put on across the week of the event.” WHAT’S ON Summer 2020-21 61
DONKEY HEAVEN
in Tongala IT’S not every day you get to surround yourself with donkeys. But it just so happens there is a place — nestled in a property on Matherson Rd, Tongala — where anyone is welcome to do exactly that. Jacks and jennies (the correct terms for he and she donkeys) have been in Australia since the 1800s and the Goulburn Valley was no exception, with wild mules and donkeys around Barmah State Forest, and the animals are still used today as herd guardians and pets. 62 WHAT'S ON Summer 2020-21
But the butts of so many jokes are now considered a pest and because of their long lifespan, domestic donkeys are often released or killed by their owners. Tongala Donkey Shelter was started in 1997 by May Dodd to help orphaned, abandoned and mistreated donkeys. Run by May and her right-hand-woman Jess Smeaton, it’s their mission to give these oftenmisunderstood animals a safe and happy home, as well as show off their many redeeming qualities to visitors. Jess, who has volunteered at the shelter since 2003, said donkeys were unique creatures brimming with personality. >>
>> “It’s not until you meet them that you figure them out,” she said. “People think they’re just a small horse, but they have completely different personalities — more like a dog. “They love hanging out, playing, they play all the time — they have a good life, we hope they do. “Most donkeys have a best friend they will mutual groom with, hang out with, they’ll eat with, stand next to and sleep with. “We’ve got boy and girlfriends, we get mother and daughter and mother and sons. “Horses have a hierarchy and a boss horse whereas donkeys, we’re all friends and we all hang out together.” May’s privately owned land in Diamond Creek and Tongala is now home to more than 200 donkeys coming from various circumstances. It costs about $75,000 a year to run and relies purely on donations and fundraising to stay afloat. Most of their funding comes through their annual open day, which is run every December. Jess said it was great event to be a part of every year. “We have guided tours, a petting yard where you can get hands-on with the donkeys and give
them a cuddle, donkey paraphernalia for sale, some clothing and a sausage sizzle. It’s just a nice day out,” she said. For inquiries or to book a visit, call 5859 1410 or email donkeyin@tpg.com.au

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MOOSIC Muster director Jan Smith said the event will have more of an outdoor focus this year.
THE town of Girgarre has always been about bringing the community together. And the 2021 Girgarre Moosic Muster is going to bring the community together again — if under slightly different restrictions. The centre point of the town will again be alive with music as the muster takes off in April, with the usual diverse workshops for every level from the beginner to the highly skilled. And an extra emphasis on singing and jamming around the site. Muster director Jan Smith said COVID may make the festival look different, but it will remain much the same. “It’s going to be very different, a lot of outdoor activities,” she said. “But it’s going to be the same program that people are used to, just presented differently. “The main concert will still be there, but it will move to the Sunday afternoon instead of the 64 WHAT'S ON Summer 2020-21
Saturday night due to the weather. “It also means we can really feature the soundshell and the amphitheatre as a centre point of the event which will be fantastic.” Jan said the volunteers involved could not wait to put the event on. “Our lives have to return to normal,” she said. “We can sit and moan, or we can do our best, and that’s what we want to do. We want to bring our event back, get people to have a go and introduce them to music. “There is a beautiful fellowship around music, it brings people together in a really special way, and we cant wait to see people come through the town and enjoy the event again.” The Girgarre Moosic Muster takes place around the town of Girgarre between April 21 and 25.
PROJECTS PUT GIRGARRE ON THE MAP The old Girgarre Railway Station — the starting point of the the Girgarre-Stanhope Rail Trail.
IT’S taken 10 years, countless local volunteers and thousands of dollars, but the town of Girgarre has started to charge ahead in the quest to become a landmark for the region. Two projects in particular — the GirgarreStanhope Rail Trail and Gargarro Botanic Garden — are at the forefront of that push. Initially thought up as a pipedream by a few Girgarre locals looking to restore the old railway station more than a decade ago, the rail trail has since transformed into an all-encompassing effort to bridge the gap between two communities. Estimated to be more than 6 km long once completed, the trail starts in Progress Park in Girgarre and will stretch all the way to Stanhope. Girgarre-Stanhope Rail Trail Committee secretary Sandra McDonald, who has been involved in the project for seven years, said it was close to completion. “The first two stages have been completed, and that’s in Girgarre itself in a small circuit in the township. And then it extends south along the old rail line as far as Mason Rd which is probably 2 km long,” Sandra said. “By the end of 2021 we should be finished. That’s what we’re aiming for. “It will be a green corridor. The aesthetics will be a vast improvement on what’s already there. Environmentally, it’s going to be a big plus. “The section that’s open now is really quite well-used by locals so I think potentially there will be a lot of usage.”
The Gargarro Botanic Garden project in Girgarre recently hit a massive milestone, with the completion of the detailed design stage of phase one. On the agenda for phase one is the completion of the first of five century gardens, as well as an ephemeral stream that will run behind the amphitheatre soundshell. The century garden is set to feature an array of native trees, shrubs and groundcover plants. Gargarro Botanic Garden Ltd chairman Doc McDonald said it was the Girgarre community’s mission to make their town a “bold, innovative, beautiful, breathtaking and crowd-pulling” landmark for the region. He said with the botanic garden and the continuing development of the GirgarreStanhope Rail Trail, locals as well as visitors had a lot to look forward to. “It’s a really ambitious, long-term plan. It will certainly make Girgarre a better place to live and will also attract visitors not only to Girgarre, but the Campaspe region. “The landscape architects describe it as an exemplar botanic garden. It’s going to be pretty spectacular.” WHAT’S ON Summer 2020-21 65
PACK A PICNIC AND HEAD to Mt Hope The granite boulders of Mt Hope offer much to explore.
For an adventurous day out or for a picnic in nature, jump in the car and head for Mt Hope. An easy 50-minute drive from Echuca, the cluster of granite boulders offers opportunities for walking and rock climbing, or to relax and take in the nature around you. Shortly after turning off Old Leitchville Rd onto Mt Hope Rd you’ll find a small car park and picnic tables.
Picnics are popular at Mt Hope.
66 WHAT’S ON Summer 2020-21
Walking is common at the site, however visitor information is sparse and there are no signed walking tracks. Those who do venture to the top of the boulders will be treated to an exceptional view of Pyramid Hill to the south-west, as well as the surrounding pastures. West of the picnic area is the site of the first homestead for the Mt Hope station; the second homestead still stands but is not available for public access. The site has a rich history. Associated with the Moyerrer Bulloc people and called Yeerarbil, it was later named Mt Hope by Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836. A nearby monument commemorates the Burke and Wills expedition which camped at Mt Hope in 1860. It can be found on Leitchville-Pyramid Rd, about 10 minutes’ drive from Mt Hope on the way to Pyramid Hill.

THE TOP
Just 15 minutes on from Mt Hope, Pyramid Hill is a sight worth seeing. At 192m above sea level, it’s hard to miss the hill with its distinct shape and pointed summit which sticks out from the surrounding flat countryside. Known as Kilmarbil in the Baraba Baraba language, Tannebulloc and Yulowil clans were associated with this area. The rock at Pyramid Hill and surrounding area is granite, this igneous rock derives from lava which has solidified below the earth’s surface. The coarse-grained rock is predominantly composed of large crystals of quartz, feldspar and mica. The large mineral grains developed under unusual conditions. The parent granite was rich in gases such as steam and compounds of chlorine, fluorine and boron. These create open spaces in rock. Those wanting to explore on foot can follow an easy path around the base of the hill or trek up and over the saddle for sweeping views over the town, surrounding farms and across to Mt Hope. The trails feature impressive granite formations and show the beautiful flora and fauna of the area, and a magnificent golf course circles the hill.
There are picnic tables, a shelter and barbecue facilities, as well as public toilets near the car park at the base of the hill. An information board at the car park provides some of the history of the site and a map of the walking tracks. The town of Pyramid Hill is a few minutes’ drive from the hill itself and offers hospitality and accommodation. WHAT’S ON Summer 2020-21 67
MAKE A SPLASH at Aqua Island AQUA Island is making a splash in Moama again this year. Opening in mid-December, the water park has decided to keep its three-hour sessions as they were such a hit with crowds last year. “Our three-hour sessions give participants time to come on and off the park as much as they want,” Aqua Island’s Kendall Belsey said. “We often find kids will run around for the full three hours, and mum and dad can have fun on the park but also have a break and relax in the shade. “We have spent time training our staff with our COVID-19 Staff Plan to ensure everyone is safe on and off the park.” Aqua Island, at 1725 Perricoota Rd, has lifeguards on duty and provides a lifejacket and

To go on the park, you need to be at least three years old, with children aged up to seven having to be accompanied by an adult. Food and drinks are available from the kiosk. Our hot chips, chicken nuggets and slushies are crowd favourites,” Kendall said. Aqua Island caters for Christmas, end-of-year and birthday parties and offers large group discounts.
