This is what many people consider peak season in the Rich River – which means not only are there all the regular attractions we have to offer there are a lot of extra events available to make your visit even more memorable. That includes our famous Riverboats Music Festival where some of Australia’s top, and fastest emerging, musical acts will be performing along the banks of the Murray. And of course the river will be action central with the running of the waterski spectaculars the Southern 80 and Barrie Beehag Classic, which always pull big crowds along both sides of the Murray.
Details of activities in this What’s On are correct at time of printing but may be subject to change.
There will be racing on both Melbourne Cup Day – one of the major events on the local racing calendar – and during the afternoon of New Year’s Eve. That will be followed by harness racing on New Year’s Day. So if you like a flutter you can have the best of both worlds – a holiday here and a trip to the track.
Designed by:
Our local theatre company will be staging the appealing musical My Son Pinocchio Jnr and that’s
one not to miss when it goes on stage on October 31. All of our regional farmers’ markets will be running right through providing an excellent opportunity to get a real taste of what our region is all about. There is a full list of markets and opening details inside. One of the major community events covered by this issue is the annual Relay For Life fundraiser for cancer research. This is something you can put your hand in your pocket to help or you can come along and be a participant on the night as every team will be happy to squeeze in anyone interested in helping out. For those with an artistic inclination distinguished artist Marion Gould will be staging a five-day exhibition at the Echuca Club and all works on display are available for sale. The Echuca-Moama district has so much to offer visitors and residents alike and we hope What’s On can help you find what you are looking for – and introduce you to something unexpected and memorable.

visitor information
Welcome to Echuca-Moama – The Murray’s Living Legend. Spring Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the wonderful heritage and history of the Echuca Moama region. The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre, which opened in December last year, is a great starting point to explore the history and heritage of this wonderful region. The Discovery Centre is a “must see” as it transports you back to the 1860s and explores the events and individuals who provided the foundation for what is Echuca Moama today. Of course the visit to the Discovery Centre, steam display, the sawmill and the magnificent historic wharf would not be complete without a trip on one of our magnificent paddle steamers. Who knows, you may just meet some of our living legends. But it’s not all about history and heritage. Wonderful day trips on the Backroads Trail, the Gold and Iron Bark Trail or parts of the Long Paddock Touring Route will
connect you with many of the smaller towns and communities in our region to enjoy the special experiences on offer. Check with the friendly staff at the Visitor Information Centre for more details. And when you add in fine food and wine, local produce, markets, country racing and quality golf courses there is certainly plenty to do in this wonderful part of regional Australia. Contact the Echuca Moama Visitor Information Centre on 1800 804 446 or go to www.echucamoama.com for more details.

Last year, Cancer Council Victoria’s Relay For Life event in Echuca-Moama saw 85 cancer Survivors and Carers come together to reflect and pay tribute to loved ones. The event raised $110,321 which helped fund Cancer Council Victoria’s research, prevention programs and support services available to every Victorian community. This year Cancer Council Victoria is inviting Echuca-Moama residents – and anyone else who wants to join in – to reunite for the region’s Relay For Life event, which will be held in Moama on Saturday October 25 and Sunday October 26. Relay For Life spokesperson JamieLea Jones says they are looking to recruit 35 teams this year, with the hope of cracking the $1 million mark in fundraising. It will be a milestone event that all residents should be really proud of, 12
Hope lives in Echuca - Moama. “Relay For Life is an opportunity for local residents to band together – celebrating cancer survivors, remembering loved ones lost and fighting back against cancer,” she said. “Teams of 10 or more will keep a baton moving around the track overnight to raise funds for Cancer Council Victoria. Those teams will camp out at Brick Alley, Moama Sports Club to support their team mates. “We’re encouraging everyone – whether they were involved last year or not – to sign up again for this moving community event.” The Echuca-Moama event will also highlight special ceremonies,

including an honorary lap for survivors and carers. At dusk, there will be a candlelight ceremony in which participants and their families can reflect and pay tribute to a loved one affected by a cancer experience. Candlelit bags will then line the track as a sign of support to the participants. “Thanks to fundraising efforts from volunteers and continued investment in the fight against cancer, more and more people are surviving – survival rates for many common cancers have increased 20 per cent in the past two decades,” Jamie-Lea said. “For survival rates to keep improving we must continue to invest in the cancer fight. Money raised through Relay For Life will help us do this.”
“These support services include the Cancer Council Helpline (13 11 20), face-to-face local support groups and Cancer Connect, which links those affected by cancer to those who have gone through a similar experience.” “By getting involved with Relay For Life, Echuca-Moama residents and any visitors to town who want to join in will have a direct impact on the lives of local residents facing cancer.” To join the Echuca-Moama Relay For Life event, please phone 1300 65 65 85 or visit relayforlife.org.au.

Turkish Bazaar Visitors and district residents will be in for a treat in Echuca’s central business district for November’s Turkish Bazaar. Held annually on the Monday of Melbourne Cup weekend, Hare St will be closed to traffic between Pakenham and Anstruther streets for the family entertainment and street stall bargains on November 3.
Lochhead said the children’s activities and entertainment would be part of the day, while the mini-bike demonstration would again feature.
The day takes on a carnival atmosphere as retailers bring their wares out onto the street to sell at often heavily-reduced prices.
‘‘It’s great for the business owners.
Echuca-Moama Business and Trades Association president Andrew
‘‘We believe it will be better than last year,’’ he said. ‘‘Between 10am and 1pm, the main street’s generally pretty packed.’’ The road will be closed to traffic between about 9am and 4pm.

Get set to sail with Riverboats 2015 The Rich River is about to crank up the volume as the fourth annual Riverboats Music Festival returns to the banks of the Murray at EchucaMoama from February 13 – 15. Spectators will have plenty of time to catch it all. Because no-one will have to crawl out of bed at the crack of dawn, with acts not hitting the stage until midday and then playing well into the summer night. Australian music superstars will be playing alongside the future of the industry, turning on a mix of everything from rock and roll to alt-country blues and soul - and everything in between. Now the Murray River’s premiere contemporary music festival, Riverboats’ captivating location lends a leisurely, laid-back vibe to the weekend’s festivities. Whether relaxing on picnic rugs or dancing to the music under the dappled light cast by the region’s towering river red gums, the festival’s diverse crowd runs from urban 20
road-trippers to country families and discerning musos. Set up again within the superb natural amphitheatre of Echuca’s Aquatic Reserve, Riverboats is the natural home for festival fans looking for an inexpensive and intimate experience brimming with great music and a handpicked selection of regional food and wine. Dan Sultan This much-loved, award-winning Melbourne artist has delivered smouldering live performances to rapt audiences throughout the country, both in support of Bruce Springsteen and on his own Blackbird headline tours. Sultan’s latest album is the culmination of many months of writing and recording, and sees powerhouse riffs met by crackling gospel interludes,

old-school rock and roll jams, pure country tones, bare and aching ballads, harmonies, horns, banjos – even an Arabic scale or two. Sarah Blasko Sarah Blasko - consummate artist and performer, with an unfaltering creative vision and an eye for detail. Having completed her latest European tour, Sarah followed up with a tour of churches and cathedrals across Australia which left audiences both entranced and lost for words. Sarah undertook the producer role for the first time on her recent ARIA-nominated album I Awake, performing songs from the album with symphony orchestras to sold-out audiences across Australia. Tex Perkins & The Dark Horses Tex Perkins has shown us many faces over his musical journey. Front-man
for the evocative soundscapes of The Cruel Sea and the hard edged pub rock of The Beasts of Bourbon, Tex is now back once again to the mysterious moody groove of The Dark Horses. Beginning life as primarily Perko’s backing band, The Dark Horses have developed a sound and style distinctly their own. The Whitlams One of Australia’s favourite bands, The Whitlams appeal to audiences of all ages and tastes, with generations of fans across the country flocking to see their shows. Winners of the award for Best Group at the 1998 ARIAs, their poignant melodies have won them critical and mass acclaim. With a total of three ARIAs, Eternal Nightcap was recently voted No. 17 in Triple J’s “Hottest Australian Albums of All Time”.
The Bamboos Nine-piece Melbourne outfit The Bamboos have come a long way since forming in 2001. Initially inspired by the instrumental raw funk of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, they made waves internationally and were quickly labelled as one of the greatest funk and soul bands of our time. Over five acclaimed albums, their evolution in sound and style has consistently exceeded expectations, pulling the rug from under the feet of those who like to pigeonhole. Adalita Well known as the front woman for iconic Australian rock band, Magic Dirt, who for nearly two decades have been one of Australia’s most respected and influential bands, Adalita is initiating new and old fans with her moving and stark solo shows. The release of Adalita’s eponymous debut album in 2011 marked the advent of a remarkable new phase in an already illustrious career. Mick Harvey Mick is a rock musician, singersongwriter, composer, arranger and record producer. A multi-
instrumentalist, he is best known for his long-term collaborations with Nick Cave, with whom he formed Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Harvey is equally known for his soundtrack work (Chopper, Australian Rules) and his production work (Rowland S Howard and most recently PJ Harvey’s Mercury Prize winning album, Let England Shake). Diesel One of our most gifted natural musicians, Diesel’s talent marked him as special from the moment he first played on a stage and, twenty-eight years on, it continues to thrill and amaze audiences as much as ever before. With over 35 singles, 13 albums, 6 ARIA awards (including three for Best Male Artist), and record sales edging 1 million, Diesel is a journeyman of music. Fraser A. Gorman Fraser A. Gorman embraces an oldworld style of story-telling, drawing inspiration from early dustbowl singers like Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan as well as modern songsmiths such as Justin Townes Earle. Gorman has achieved a great deal in the past 12 months, firmly establishing himself as one of the country’s
most promising rising talents. His captivating songwriter abilities and charismatic live performances have secured his place on some of the country’s most loved festival bills. Stella Angelico Born to a magician father and cult cabaret performer mother, Stella Angelico has music and performance coursing through her veins. A singersongwriter, Angelico released her first self titled EP and single, Mister, in 2012. From cheeky, irreverent chanteuse to broken-hearted balladeer, Stella Angelico’s soul-poprock will move you. With a voice that is both bold and vulnerable, Angelico will undoubtedly make you smile, before reminding you that love is sometimes just a punch in the guts. Raised By Eagles A debut LP nominated for Best Country Album at The Age Music Victoria Awards, consistently raw and captivating performances and a unique brand of country-grit, pop and rock has cemented Raised By Eagles’ reputation as one of Melbourne’s most sought after acts. Recently selected to appear alongside international luminaries including Justin Townes Earle and
Lindi Ortega for the inaugural ‘Out On The Weekend’ Festival, this is an Australian band undoubtedly on the rise. Sal Kimber & The Rollin’ Wheel Originally hailing from the mountain valleys of rural Victoria, Sal Kimber is one of Australia’s most exciting young singer-songwriters. Having grown up in a musical family, Sal discovered her passion for songwriting at an early age. Now based in inner Melbourne, Kimber has been quietly stealing hearts in the depth of Australia’s live music scene for the past eight years. Matt Walker & The Lost Ragas This Melbourne band’s earliest shows were tentative, gentle affairs, but over time the line-up injected new songs and developed their country-blues sound, at once familiar and utterly singular. Featuring Matt Walker on guitars, vocals and harmonica, their live shows are delicate yet powerful, laid back and intense, with moments quiet enough to hear a pin drop, and powerful enough to drive a nail into the ground. ν

Everybody nose that boy Pinocchio Param e Theatr
Don't believe everything you hear, but in this case the good news is as good as it gets. Because Echuca-Moama Theatre Company's latest production is a story everyone nose about. When the curtain rises for opening night at the end of October the guys behind My Son Pinocchio Jr will be as happy as good old Geppetto when their wooden-headed star totters across the stage.
For EMTC president John Wright and executive committee member Matt McLindon the production marks their first time as co-directors.
since his first performance in 2009 as Gaston in Beauty and the Beast.
But this first collaboration held no fears for these veterans of the stage.
Mr McLindon revealed what he liked about co-directing: “I’m enjoying the creative side of it, where you get input into how characters develop and sets are staged,’’ he said.
Mr Wright has worked with the theatre as an actor, backstage manager and production manager
“So I thought it’s time to have a go at learning to direct,’’ he said.
“I’m very excited to see the finished product on stage after all the behindthe-scene meetings. Seeing that come to fruition’s going to be great,’’ he said. My Son Pinocchio Jr opens on Friday October 31 with tickets on sale at the Paramount Theatre.

Victoria Clay Target State Titles Clay target shooting in the Rich River is November’s in thing. The Echuca Target Club is hosting the Victorian State Clay Titles; a three-day event which is expected to attract trap shooters from across Australia and from as far afield as New Zealand. The yearly gathering will feature some of the Trans-Tasman’s best trap shooters doing their thing.
It’s interesting, it’s unusual, it’s addictive and it’s an event which should see an influx of shooting families to flood the town.
After acquiring additional ground the Echuca Clay Target Club has been established as the State Clay Target Venue.
Trap shooting is an addictive sport. The sounds enhance the experience and the precision and skill of the athletes is remarkable – and certainly something worth a look.
The land purchased holds 12 trap layouts and a 2ha car park, which gives a hint as to how big this can be.
The event is open to the public eye and is a free of charge so there’s no excuse not to check it out. For more information visit www.vcta.com.au. Contact: Peter Sing on 03 5481 2211 (BH) 03 5852 2478 (AH)

JAN 9-11 2015 GIRGARRE
Special Celtic and ukulele programs are just two of the highlights of the 9th Girgarre Moosic Muster, to be held January 9-11, 2015. Free concerts and open mike sessions and more than 25 free workshops are on offer from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. The muster offers bluegrass, folk, country, pop, gospel and contemporary music, continuous jamming and even free instrument loans. Workshops cover guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, double bass and violin, different playing styles, singing, musical theory and traditional clogging. The workshops typically
attract up to 500 players each year. Well-known bands and expert musicians from the district, regional Victoria and Melbourne donate their time each year to teach and perform. Hundreds of people have been taught to play through the muster and its associated jamming events. “Our tutors will have you playing, singing or dancing within the hour,” Moosic Muster co-founder Jan Smith said. “We’ve seen many beginners get up and perform a number which they have just learned, because of the

All aboard for new Echuca history tour Old riverboat captains don’t just fade away. They simply become part of history – or in the case of Don Fraser a living part of the Echuca Historical Society. Where they drop anchor and sign on as tour guide for the new EHS Friday guided tours of its headquarters at 1 Dickson Street. EHS president Dot Hammond said the new tour program would start with onehour programs at 11.30am every Friday (the museum is open from 11am to 3pm every day of the year except Good Friday and Christmas Day). Mrs Hammond said Mr Fraser had become such a regular after finishing his days on the river the EHS “simply had to put him to good use”.
She said he had been doing impromptu tours on an ad hoc basis so formalising them at a fixed time simply made them more available to visitors. “Don still has his riverboat captain’s licence but will now spend more time steering people around our museum than around the bends of the Murray,” Mrs Hammond said. “People don’t realise just how much history we have in here and that it will take the full hour to get a good overview of Echuca’s history,” she said. “So many people just think river, but we have the story of the whole town and the areas around it. “And like any colonial Australian town of
any note it has a very good story to tell.” EHS was formed in 1960 and moved into its Dickson Street site 10 years later where it has focused on consolidating as much of the city’s history as possible for future generations. Much of that history will play a key role in helping tell the story of Echuca locals in the lead up to Remembrance Day in November and the centenary of Anzac Day next April. Mrs Hammond added if visitors wanted to tour the museum on their own a printed copy with the core details of Mr Fraser’s tour was available as a guide.

Mr Fraser will take tour participants through a colourful account of Echuca, from the EHS recreation room to its period costume display and its collection of historical photography, records and stories. Further information is available from EHS on (03) 5480 1325 or Dot Hammond on 0408 505 662. Or visit www.echucahistoricalsociety.org.au.

The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 9-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria ,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish & chips. Fish in a Flash uses only fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The oyster bar is now a burgeoning part of the business, with oysters available grilled, natural or Kilpatrick, as well as in fritters. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

And to celebrate this amazing milestone will stage Art in the Park on Saturday November 8, offering locals and visitors a day of ‘hands on activities’ for adults and children providing a wonderful family day of creative pursuits. Just down
the road
Your journey doesn’t have to end at the town limits. You’ll find plenty to see and do in Echuca-Moama’s surrounding towns. Rochester
River has been set aside as a passive recreation reserve.
Rochester was home to Sir Hubert (Oppy) Opperman, legendary cyclist and later politician, whose statue off the main street is a popular stopping point for tourists. The Opperman Sports Museum is situated in the Shire Service Centre next to the Rochester Shire Hall in Mackay street. The museum contains personal memorabilia from Oppy’s sporting and political life including many photos, certificates, awards, trophies and the bike he rode over the last years of his life
Rochester Historical Society has its headquarter in Rochester’s second public school building, which was built on the High St site in 1874.
 23mins from Echuca
Several panels have now been installed showing the various sporting clubs and individuals who have contributed to Rochester’s sporting history A heritage walk from the main bridge to the red brick bridge takes in the old saleyards bull ring, the old water tower and shire hall, while the western bank of the Campaspe
Campaspe Weir can be reached by travelling south on the Northern Hwy toward Elmore and turning left on to a gravel road after 9km.
Tongala
21mins from Echuca Tongala district was settled by squatters in the 1840s. Irrigation subsequently ensured the success of an intensive dairying industry. The agricultural legacy is captured at the Golden Cow, a community project which provides an insight for tourists, students, farmers and industry personnel into the dairy industry and associated environmental issues. In Tongala, a series of murals depict the evolution of the dairy industry
ROCHESTER
and groundwater issues. Other murals give an insight into the armed forces, while a monument pays tribute to the Australian Light Horse, and an avenue of honour recalls those who lost their life in the Armoured Corp in Vietnam.
Lockington
33mins from Echuca Lockington is a small country town set in irrigated dairy farming country. Visitors can enjoy a picnic in the landscaped park areas, take a walk following the self-guided heritage walk or choose a route past the mural in the pavilion, the rose garden and Lions flower clock. Bring the fountain to life in the lagoon area and keep your eyes open for the Locky Ness monster. On Sunday afternoons (or by appointment) call in to Lockington and District Living Heritage Complex for a trip down memory lane, while enjoying friendly hospitality.
Rushworth
53mins from Echuca At Rushworth’s fire lookout at Growlers Hill, the view covers the historic gold mining town, Waranga Reservoir, Rushworth Forest and the Goulburn Valley. The 24,300ha box ironbark forest is the largest of its type in Victoria, areas of it covering evidence of the district’s early mining activity. But Rushworth’s history is well preserved at the town’s museum, while historic buildings also remain the heart of the town. Waranga Basin, to the north-east of the town, is a tourist drawcard in the region, providing opportunities for boating, fishing and camping, while south of Rushworth is Whroo Historic Reserve, which represents the remnants of what was once a thriving gold mining town of 1000 people and 139 buildings.
Barmah
31km from Echuca Barmah is the gateway to the World

A cairn on the southern slopes commemorates the explorer, Major Sir Thomas Mitchell, who discovered and named the area in 1836 during his journey into Australia Felix.
