Get keen for the green

D

ecember 1 sees the opening of a new Cod season along with the start to a strong list of tournaments. Anglers looking to pit their skills against other like-minded fisho's won't be left disappointed with various exciting action packed events planned for both Lake Mulwala and the Murray River over the upcoming months. Mulwala Football Netball Club’s iconic “Cod Classic” kicks off the festivities. A crowd of more than 3000 anglers will converge on Australia's premier cod fishing grounds, Lake Mulwala and the Murray River to try and tempt an iconic green fish. With more than $125,000 in prizes including seven boating packages on offer plus a $20,000 cash bonus for some lucky angler if they manage to catch "Brian", a specially tagged Murray cod, you would be crazy to miss this fabulous fishing festival. February 15 and 16, 2014 see the running of the very popular “Da$h 4 Ca$h Super Series”. Contested over two days the “Dash 4 Cash” consists of three different fishing sessions. Saturday’s fishing comprises of two, four hour fishing sessions while Sunday morning has a quick fire three hour session.

The aim of the game is for anglers to catch their fish as quick as possible, bring them back to the designated weigh point for measuring and release and are then awarded points according to fish length and time or capture. Cash prizes in excess of $10,000 are hotly contested with the field limited to 100 boats. The very popular “His & Hers Partners Classic” on March 1 sees Lake Mulwala come alive with 100 understanding couples taking to the water attempting to track down the elusive “Green Fish” whist not killing each other in the process. The H&H is designed for the guys to help the ladies catch a fish while enjoying themselves. Numerous ladies have been made to participate but returned home with a new found passion after catching their first Cod. Free Champagne and finger food along with huge cash prizes should see the “His & Hers” being put onto the “To Do” list for fishing couples. The season culminates with the newest and most hard fought event of all, the “Cod Nationals”. The “Nationals” are a taxing event for the competitive angler designed to pit their skill

The fourth season of concerts, presented by the Yarrawonga Mulwala Arts Council, will be held on December 8, January 12, February 9 and March 9. Welcome to the Terminus Hotel R

ichard and Rachel, together with their little family Connor and Beatrix (not forgetting Rosie the dog) would like to thank everyone who’ve helped us settle into life here at the Terminus Hotel, Yarrawonga. It’s a big job and she’s a grand old pub and we’ve had a grand old welcome not to mention all the best of luck wishes we’ve received. We’re looking forward to the challenge ahead. We’ve been asked so many times “why Yarrawonga and why The Terminus” and as we’ve said we think she’s a grand old pub. She has a large beer garden out the back, a balcony out the front and an old rocking chair? As for Yarrawonga, well that’s more about the country, the folks and real family values. Rachel and I have been in the hospitality game most of our careers, myself starting out in Ireland and having a few too many pubs through England before thankfully landing in Oz . Rachel’s background as a corporate travel agent should ensure the safe arrival and departure of all our welcomed guests at the pub. The other thing we’ve been asked is what we plan on doing with the pub. The answer’s not quite black and white. You see, a pub as old as The Terminus needs to be felt out, respected and adapted, not necessarily changed completely.

Richard and Rachel Young with their children, Connor and Beatrix Sure, we’ll move a couple of things, give her a spruce up and pay attention to her needs but our belief and passion is that she’s a pub that’s still a pub. No more said, right? Well not quite. And I think this is the best bit. We’ve pulled off a real coup and engaged Executive Chef Bill Petropolis to work with our Head Chef Tulsi to create a new pub menu.

Wow is all I can say. This menu represents flair and creativity whilst still paying respect to the pub classics.

It’s

fresh, it’s hearty and crisp and we can’t wait for you to try it. So come on down and say howdy and we’ll look forward to your company.

arrawonga Lollyshop is a lolly and chocolate lover’s paradise. Owners Helen Holmberg and Rodney Crawford have loved owning the Yarrawonga Lollyshop for more than a year now and recently closed for two weeks to make some much needed changes to freshen up the shop. “The shop desperately needed a revamp,” said Helen. “We repainted the pick and mix bright pink, freshened up some old tired shelves and purchased new shelves. “The new bamboo flooring has been the best change we have made, as it has created an old fashioned style to our shop. “It is really wonderful to receive such positive feedback on how great it looks.” Yarrawonga Lollyshop has a wide W RS 1range 2 of Australian made chocolates and lollies, including sugar free 0 E 2 N T varieties, plus Dutch and English OC favourites, even Dr Pepper soft drink.

“I am very keen to source and stock Australian Made items as must as possible. It’s really satisfying to be able to tell our customers where they are made,” said Helen. “It is so exciting just walking into the shop and finding all those favourite lollies from when you were young like Choo Choo Bars, White Knights, Castlemaine Rock and lots more,” Helen said. A wander through the shop engages your senses - sight, smell and taste, reminding many visitors of their childhood days. Customers often leave the store, arms laden with goodies, saying “I haven’t had that since I was a kid” or “do you remember when?” “The pick and mix is very popular with people of all ages, I always think it’s great to be able to select just the lollies you love,” Rodney said “There are more than 86 different lollies to choose from so I am sure you will be able to fill up a bag or maybe two” Yarrawonga Lolly Shop also offer

ummer in Yarrawonga Mulwala conjures up visions of fishing, watersports, golfing, food and wine tasting and ‘the usual suspects’ of summer activities. But there is also another activity which many people enjoy in its own right, or use to enhance their Yarrawonga-Lake Mulwala experience. Those people organize a TIF (Trial Introductory Flight) with Yarrawonga Flight Training early in the morning or late afternoon when the shadows are longer and the flat terrain takes on a beauty not seen in the middle of the day. Some people come from all over Australia to learn to fly at YFT in our open cockpit, powerful, modern recreational aircraft, known as “Trikes”, or “motorbikes of the sky”. Still others like to fly over the lake finding cod holes, so they can later return in their tinnie to fish a likely spot. Some people just want to tick another activity off their ‘bucket list’’, or wave to their friends after enjoying the local views from above, whilst participating in their TIF. Prior to their TIF, people may arrange a digital photographic record of their flight. Late Friday afternoon you may see the members of X-Ray Tango Flight conducting Formation Friday. Byramine Homestead and Brewery

H

istoric Byramine Homestead was built in 1842 by famous explorer Hamilton Hume for his sister-inlaw, Elizabeth Hume and her nine children after her husband John Hume was killed by a gang of bushrangers, known as the Witten Gang. The homestead is Classified “A” by the National Trust – meaning to be preserved at all costs. The most unique aspect of the house is the octagonal shaped rooms. The home was designed for the climate and for security. The central octagonal room is known as the fortress. It allows a clear view of all angles in case of attack from bushrangers or natives. Elizabeth named her home “Byramine Homestead” meaning rustic cottage. A beautiful garden was established. The Elm trees planted in 1842 remain today and are the oldest in Victoria. Today the homestead is open to the public as an enchanting memorial to those hard pioneer days so long ago. The recently opened Byramine Brewery is a great addition to the homestead. Situated within the grounds of the Byramine Homestead, it is free to enter the brewery. Brewery manager Wade has developed a unique range of beer for all to enjoy including Bullock and Dray Draught, Stockman’s Stout or the beer that packs a punch, Convict’s Cure. tep back in time and enjoy the atmosphere of yesteryear at the historic Rennie Hotel Bed & Breakfast. Situated on Bull Plain Road, the Rennie Hotel B&B was established by Sue and Maarten Ryswyk, an adventurous couple who have travelled Australia over the last 30 years and understand exactly what visitors are looking for when they come to this region. Built in 1934, the Rennie Hotel had lain vacant for many years until the Ryswyks discovered it three years ago and decided to establish a Bed

and Breakfast. Three years of hard and creative toil has brought the building back to its former glory. The building is an attraction in itself with period features throughout and interesting and historic artefacts. The former bar, although not operational, provides an accurate glimpse of days gone by when the country pub was the centre of the community. The B&B offers a variety of accommodation including a single room with ensuite and two rooms with a shared bathroom. There is also a guest’s lounge with television

and music and a period dining room where guests are served wonderful home cooked meals. Continental breakfasts are included with the room or you can order a delicious cooked breakfast for an extra

One hundred years ago in the midst of a particularly wild winter a local farmer had a brainstorm that would go on to revolutionise the agricultural industry Australia wide. Headlie Taylor, a local farmer in the Henty district, who designed the Header Harvester which lifted heads of damaged crops to salvage that which would otherwise be lost with its predecessor the Sunshine Harvester. In 1914 at the Henty Agricultural Show, Mr Headlie Taylor demonstrated his Header to much excitement among visiting famers. It is this agricultural legacy that will be commemorated in one big weekend in Henty on February 8 and 9, 2014. This jam-packed weekend kicks off with the 190th Henty Agricultural Show on the Saturday. The roots of the century old show will be honoured

Enjoy demonstrations of crop harvesting by hand, horse drawn machinery, harvesters, winnowers, strippers, binders, a large Robinson Thresher, headers and vintage tractors. The culmination of the day will be a new large modern header working beside a small vintage header. Gates open 8am with demonstrations from 9am to 6pm. Experience the natural beauty of the upper Murray in Greater Hume Shire from Talmalmo to Bowna. The upper Murray is the perfect place to spend a summer day, whether you are into fishing, boating, canoeing or even just a drive along the banks of the river to enjoy the views. As you travel along the Murray, why not stop for a spot of fishing? There are plenty of spots along the Murray where you can stop off and fish on the banks or put the boat in at one of the many boat ramps along the river. With early summer being the best time for catching Murray Cod you may even land the catch of the day. For more information on fishing in the Murray, including licensing requirements, contact NSW fisheries.

More than just a sweet treat C

orowa Chocolate and Whisky is more than just a place to buy your favourite sweet treats. The iconic Corowa chocolate, as divine as it is, is no longer the only drawcard to this eatery that has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Since taking back management of its kitchen early in 2013, Corowa Chocolate Whisky has been delighted of the services provided by new head chef Celestine Emeghebo, who hails from Nigeria. A quality chef, ‘Cel’ is highly skilled in both Spanish and French cuisine and has added his own alternative twist to many familiar favourites on the menu. “Cel is very highly skilled in what he does,” Corowa Chocolate and Whisky Manager Dean Druce said. “I will happily proclaim he is the best chef in all the lands but we will let the customers find that out for themselves; they are in for a treat.”

“She is very skilled and has shown she can handle the kitchen herself which is very good for someone so young.” Having added a creative twist to the popular menu, Cel and Dean have been pleased with the feedback from their well-dined customers. “The response so far has been outstanding,” Dean said. “We have two brilliant people doing a brilliant job and we couldn’t be happier.” Cel said he has enjoyed the response from the people of Corowa, who he

ummer is a great time to visit Rutherglen Estates. Visitors will be able to taste some exciting new releases and some old favourites at our cellar door. Located in the heart of Rutherglen it is the perfect place to escape the heat, relax and taste some fantastic wines. We have one of the best selections of Mediterranean and Italian varietals in the country. It is always a thrill to taste the new releases, particularly as the 2013 vintage was one of our best to date. The 2013 white table wines have only been out for a very short time, but have already been receiving great reviews and feedback. New releases to look out for include; the 2013 Savagnin, 2013 White, 2013 Pinot Grigio, and our 2013 Arneis. The Arneis recently picked up a gold medal at the recent Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show and will be available early in the New Year. Social gatherings with family and friends are a good excuse to open a bottle or enjoy one with your meal. A traditional festive season treat is the 2010 Sparkling Shiraz Durif. Deep red in colour it

Sweet as honey – Walkabout Apiaries a self-sufficient business, utilising specialised bee keeping skills such as breeding Queen bees and producing natural beeswax candles. Rod and daughter –in-law Tracey also make mead, crafted from locally produced honey, berries and spices, under the Whitehead Mead label. Walkabout Apiaries has recently launched a unique new-look label which identifies the honey by featuring an image of the bark of the tree from which it came. The unusual concept came about because beekeepers often use the bark as the first means of identifying trees and potential honey crops. “We hope that customers will enjoy the concept when identifying and choosing their honey,” Rod said. “We’ve then given each variety its own style with a unique typeface. “Our hope is that it makes people more aware of all the different types of honey we can produce in

alkabout Apiaries in Milawa is a thirdgeneration beekeeping business grown from a love of producing simply great, natural honey. Rod and Jenny Whitehead built the family business from a shared enjoyment of outdoor living and working together to produce a product they love. Born into beef farming, Rod always thought he would continue doing as his father did. But with little joy in the cattle game, in the 1970’s Rod turned his attention to developing his hobby of keeping bees. The timing was right, with favourable seasons and good honey production allowing Rod to grow the business steadily. He soon found his new stock, of the wingedvariety, took him all over the region

and gave him the opportunity to work in some of Victoria’s most beautiful and remote bush. “Our bees collect nectar from the blossoming eucalypts of the High Country and the river plains of the Ovens, Murray and King Rivers," Rod said. “We take as much care in handling our honey as we do looking after our bees. Our happy healthy bees make the best honey.” Rod, Jenny and sons Greg and Don are committed to packing honey true to its origins, without blending or pasteurising. They offer customers a product that has full flavour and remains reflective of the floral source from which the bees collect their nectar and pollen. Walkabout Apiaries offer eight different varieties of honey and is

Located on a sand hill wedged between the Murray and Goulburn Rivers upstream from Echuca and on the very western edge of Western Moira, Cape Horn Vineyard is named after the river bend resembling Cape Horn on the tip of South America. The Vineyard was first planted to

Shiraz grapes in the 1800’s serving the thriving River Boat trade. The property is owned by Sue and Ian Harrison and the Vineyard has been re-established, with the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Durif, Marsanne and Zinfandel vines Their philosophy is to produce high quality boutique wines that reflect the vineyards’ distinct microclimate, rich sandy soils and native eucalypt surrounds, whilst maintaining fruitdriven varietal characteristics. Cape Horn Vineyard has sprawling lawns with plenty of room for the kids to run around while the rest of the family relaxes and is also

dog friendly due to the Harrison’s own affection for two very loveable resident Labradors. Today Cape Horn Vineyard offers visitor’s tastings at the cellar door of a fine selection of wines made from their own fruit. Guests are encouraged to pack a picnic and take the trip to the vineyard. This summer will also feature entertainment in the beautiful surrounds of Cape Horn Vineyard

including; Sunday, January 19 – Shakespeare In the Vines - A Midsummer Night’s Dream 5pm to 7.30pm. BYO picnic or wood fired pizzas available. Bookings essential, available at the cellar door ph: 03 5480 6013 or www. stickytickets.com.au/13670. Saturday, January 25 – Jazz on the Murray at 3pm til dark. $15 entry on the day.

he roar of modified tractors will again echo around Waaia as the annual Modified Tractor Pull fires up on Saturday, March 15, 2014. The action will be non-stop as competitors converge from all across south Eastern Australia to compete in this Australian Tractor Pullers Association Series Event. The arena is just 5kms north of Waaia and is well sign posted, gates open at 2pm and the action kicks off at 3pm. The awesome pulling power of the highly modified machines provides fast and furious entertainment. These ‘tractors’ certainly don’t look like tractors. Each one is personalised by the owner, come in shapes and sizes and they are a sight to see. This year will be a twilight event beginning at 3pm and continuing under lights until around 10pm. As the evening settles in, the atmosphere increases with the flames from exhausts lighting up the track and the exhaust of the Smoker class becoming a well-lit candle pumping out billowing smoke as it tears up the track. Continued work on the site just north of Waaia on the Waaia-Bearii Road has ensured an improved

venue with everything provided to ensure a good day out for all. Local sporting and community groups will provide the excellent catering and bar facilities. A delegated ‘dry side’ of the track will also ensure a great atmosphere that guarantees your family a safe and relaxing day out. There will be added entertainment for the kids with a jumping castle, free train rides and a display by the junior pullers in the Mower Class. There will be a raffle with many prizes to be won. An evening tea break will also provide an opportunity for fans to enter the pits and check out these machines up close, and to talk to the drivers. Entry is $20.00 over 18s, $10 aged pensioners, $5 under 18’s and under 5s free. It will be action a-plenty at the Waaia Modified Tractor Pull- come along and be amazed by the sheer brute force of this high octane sport. If you are just visiting the area and are looking for a great day out, grab your chair or blanket and enjoy a great day out. If you would like further information, please contact Karen on 03 58682233. See you there.

hether you’re selling, restoring or browsing for that perfect piece, Antiques & Collectables on High in Cobram is the place to visit. The High Street store is a treasure trove of antiques and collectables, all lovingly cared for and restored. Greg from Antiques & Collectables on High has more than 40 years experience in furniture making and restoration and, after growing up in the region then working away for many years, he returned two years ago to share his passion for antiques. “If it’s old or antique and I can get my hands on it, I will put it in the shop,” Greg said. True to his word Antiques & Collectables on High is filled with antique furniture including chests of drawers, crystal cabinets, dining settings and sideboards and, in particular, an extensive range of Australian cedar pieces. The store features Georgian era antiques from the 1700’s onwards, items from the Victorian era 1850’s to 1900’s and the Edwardian era from the 1900’s to 1905. Greg not only makes, restores and sells furniture, he also has a range of furniture polishes and waxes available for sale and is happy to offer advice on what you need to do to maintain your precious pieces. For those looking for something different, Greg has recently ventured into the field of model boats

and nauticalia. He now has an array of replica boats, including the likes of the Victory and Mayflower, on display for the novice or seasoned collector to peruse. Antiques & Collectables on High also has an extensive array of smalls including Wedgwood pottery, Beswick, Royal Doulton, Toby jugs, decanters, Art glass, Murano and crockery. For those looking for something a little different, Greg also has a range of reproduction metal advertising signs available for sale. “Apart from selling and buying, I also offer restoration of everything from small coffee tables to 14 piece dining settings,” Greg said. “I also make to order furniture from recycled timber using traditional methods if people have something particular in mind.” Now, if after browsing the extensive range at Antiques & Collectables on High you find yourself a little peckish, Greg has the answer with an exciting new range of organic chocolates and licorice. A beautiful array of tempting delights will have you leaving the store not only with all your furniture and collectables sorted by also a tasty treat to sweeten your day.
