GREAT LAKE MULWALA

T

he second Great Lake Mulwala Boat Muster will be held at the Mulwala Water Ski Club Lagoon on Saturday, February 27 and is sure to again attract ‘boaties’ from far and wide. A flotilla of registered boats will start at the Mulwala Ski Club at 2pm and cruise across Lake Mulwala to the Yarrawonga Foreshore and meet a flotilla of boats from Bundalong. All registered boats will then cruise back to the Mulwala Foreshore finishing with a huge boat party at the Ski Club. An expo featuring boating manufacturers and suppliers will also feature at the club. For those who do not have a boat you can book a spot on the Paradise Queen. The cruise goes for three hours and includes finger food and will have fun nautical theme. Event spokesperson Jared Loughnan said the Boat Muster was created to showcase Lake Mulwala and everything we love about boats. “Deniliquin may have its Utes but we have an iconic recreational lake ideally nestled between two beautiful towns with magnificent lakefront properties and facilities and with that an amazing array of boats.

“Last summer’s event was fantastic with many boats and crew members dressing up. “From Gilligan’s Island to the Flintstones, we even had Thor and Wonder Women grace our wonderful lake. There was also a taste of royalty with Queen Elizabeth making a special trip for the event. It was a whole lot of fun. “This summer we will again have various fun and novelty events such as crew challenges, live entertainment, can bar and food available on the Ski Club’s Malibu Deck. There will be children’s activities and a jumping castle,” Jared said. There will be various prizes for registered boats and the categories include; Best presented and kitted out BBQ Boat; Best presented and kitted out Waterski/wakeboard Boat; Best presented and kitted out Jetski; Best presented and kitted classic/restored boat; Best theme for a boat; Best dressed crew along with spot prizes and giveaways throughout the day. Spectacular summer at Rich Glen Olive Estate

R

ich Glen Olive Estate is looking spectacular this summer with flowering garden beds and an abundance of fresh herbs, veggies and fruit. The kitchen is in full swing creating some amazing seasonal jams, chutneys, pasta, pesto and dips. In the Olive Grove spring thunderstorms caused the loss of a lot of the flowers but as the trees start to form the fruit the boys in the orchard are working hard to boost the yield with nutrients, irrigation and a healthy dose of ‘TLC’. The museum (fondly known as Pop’s Storage Shed) is coming along nicely with the arrival of the Old McDonald and Hart-Parr Tractors. These were both painstakingly restored to their full former glory by the Stillard family mechanical engineer Charlie Luxmoore along with Max Stillard (Ros Vodusek’s dad) and his brothers Roy and David. Life’s a beach in Cobram

W

elcome to ‘The Beach’, a gastronomic dining experience on Australia’s largest inland beach, Thompsons Beach, on the banks of the Mighty Murray River, Cobram. The unmatched natural beauty of the sandy beach is home to one of Australia’s most unique fully licensed restaurants, offering a funky casual and sensual gourmet dining experience for breakfast, lunch and

dinner, seven days a week. The award-winning cafe/ restaurant opened five years ago as the brainchild of local restaurateur Paul Gemmill. A hand-picked team of motivated chefs buzz in the kitchen to create their culinary delights using locally sourced meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, they have an extensive local and regional wine list and offer fresh roasted coffee and handmade pastries for a cosy pop in.

In an age where more is expected from the food service industry, The Beach breaks the mould of a country town’s predictable fair. This Cobram delight offers an intriguing and varied a la carte menu without pretence whilst still providing a friendly, warming laid back service that is accustomed to the bush. Try the ‘fresh caught’ Murray Cod or Grilled Peach and Cinnamon Crumble for a real taste of Cobram.

Away from the excellent service and outstanding menu is “the view”. See the Beach website www. thebeachcafecobram.com.au or visit the Facebook page to see the extraordinary vista the restaurant overlooks - inland beach, Murray River Redgums, koalas, floodlit swimming hole – wow. Come for the food and stay for the view cos ‘life’s a beach in Cobram’.

“An affordable retreat” Numurkah Caravan Park, Business Excellence award winner, is a beautiful park right on the banks of the Broken Creek. A five minute walk to the shops, pubs, swimming pools, gym, golf club and bowls club.

D

o you have some spare time these summer holidays? Why not have a bra fitting at Numurkah? The might sound like an unusual holiday activity but Ragg Denn & Unmentionables Proprietor Heather Kelly says industry statistics show seven out of 10 Australian women are currently wearing the wrong bra size - this can cause discomfort, sagging breasts and back pain. She said it is vital for women to have their bra size checked after experiencing any significant changes to their size or shape. “Pregnancy, weight loss or gain, surgery and an increase in sporting activity are just some of the situations after which women may find their bras no longer fit as well,” Heather said.

Call in and see Heather Kelly at Ragg Denn & Unmentionables. A fitting only takes only eight to 10 minutes and the difference it can make to your level of comfort and support, not to mention the look of you outerwear, can be astounding. Ragg Denn & Unmentionables in Numurkah has three qualified bra fitters on hand to help you find your way into a comfortable, wellfitted bra this summer.

onichino Wines, one of the most-renowned and highly-regarded familyowned and operated wineries in Australia, farewelled founding father Carlo Monichino in 2015. Father, grandfather and founding winemaker, Carlo was a true pioneer of winemaking in the Goulburn Valley region. He migrated to Australia from Northern Italy in 1949, aged just 18, and set about building his dream of not only a vineyard but a winery in Katunga. Through hard work and a labour of love, Carlo and wife Margaret established the vineyard and opened the Cellar Door in 1972 – the only one in the area at the time. What followed was an unrivalled legacy, as Carlo forged his way as a leader in the winemaking industry with the winery now producing 27 varieties of wine, all bearing the Monichino name. veryone’s favourite family destination, Kyabram Fauna Park, is ready to welcome visitors this summer. The warm weather brings with it a flurry of activity as the park residents get out and about to bask in the sunshine and make new friends. Call in this and see one of the park favourites, Heidi the Koala. This beautiful bundle of fur is growing up quickly and remains one of the park’s most popular residents. She’s giving brothers Kendi and Kay a run for their money, as this feisty little lass demands attention, and Heidi will feature in the Kyabram Fauna Park Koala Enclosure throughout summer. Don’t forget to call in and say hello to the beautiful pink cockatoos. The feathery duo Rose and Floyd invite you to their walk-through aviary home. And if you’re lucky, these two blushing beauties might even pose for a photograph or two. Five generations of Gehrig Wines

J

ohn Gehrig, a fourth generation vineron, established the vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976; only minutes from the Milawa Gourmet Region. John’s son Ross has taken on the challenge of guiding the fifth winemaking generation of Gehrig’s to craft some fine wines. Armed with a wine science degree, international winemaking experiences in Alsace, Burgundy and Israel, Ross’s obsession is producing the best grapes to produce wines of distinction that will pay homage to this iconic Northeast Victorian winery. In 2011, the allure of returning back into John’s original birthplace – Rutherglen - was too strong, so Ross with wife Meghan, have expanded to a new vineyard and cellar door site in Gooramadda (east Rutherglen). Gehrig Wines will once again feature in the region’s premiere wine and gourmet food event, Tastes of Rutherglen, on March 12 and 13. The event focuses on matching incredible wine with delicious food and Gehrig Wines will be utilising the beautiful produce from their neighbours Gooramadda Olives to present a delicious Gooramadda Grazing Platter. There will also be an exciting olive and wine matching

Visit Warrabilla Wines this summer

R

enowned for producing quality whites, reds and fortifieds, Warrabilla Wines is a must for those seeking the best wines the beautiful north-east has to offer. Andrew and Carol Smith founded Warrabilla Wines in 1991 and moved to their current location on the Murray Valley Highway near Rutherglen in 1996.

In 2012 they were joined in the family business by daughter Amy, a sixth generation wine maker. Together the family has forged a reputation for a commitment to wine integrity and quality control, subsequently producing some of the biggest, full-bodied reds in Australia and a small range of quality whites. With a dedicated team on site, the winery offers visitors the

chance to taste and delight in the rich variety of wines at the cellar door, experiencing first-hand the Warrabilla signature style. Features of the Warrabilla range include the Reserve Label – a prime example of the winery’s style and the Parola’s label – premium wine only made in great vintages from exceptional fruit with maturation in brand new oak barrels. Furthering Rutherglen’s reputation for world-class fortifieds, Warrabilla

also produces Muscat, Tawny and VPs (Vintage Port). The Warrabilla range is available at a reasonable price for wine lovers and the wine club is a great way for members and regular visitors to enjoy special offers and keep up with winery news. The winery is open most days over the festive season, but will be closed Friday, December 18 and Thursday, December 24 to Sunday, December 27 inclusive.

Think pink – enjoy a glass of rosé this summer

W

arm, sunny summer days are finally upon us, and there's no better way to celebrate the arrival of the warmer months than with a good rosé. Rosé is commonly enjoyed in the warmer, southern regions of France, where there is demand for a refreshing red wine to be enjoyed on a hot summer's day. Rosé style wines are enjoying a surge in popularity in Australia, for similar lifestyle reasons. A bottle of rosé can instantly transport you to another place and can elevate any experience, particularly when enjoyed while dining Al Fresco. The Rutherglen Estates dry style Rosé is made from Grenache with a touch of Shiraz grapes. Surprisingly robust, the palate is full of pretty fruit flavours reminiscent of strawberries and cream, with added spiciness from the Grenache. This wine is strawberries and spice… and all things nice. Enjoy a chilled glass of rosé with light

summer fare, such as smoked salmon, roast capsicum and snow pea spaghetti or barbecued baby octopus salad with mango salsa and chilli lime dressing.

A wonderful way to while away those long, balmy summer nights.

Pop into the Rutherglen Estates cellar door this summer and try their pretty pink rosé

for yourself - open seven days from 10am to 5.30pm.

Visitors will enjoy the wonderful streetscape of yesteryear and enjoy walking around the backstreets in safety looking at the new gardens and subtle changes that have taken place to update this wonderful village’s ‘wardrobe’. The National Trust buildings (Dow’s Pharmacy, Federal Standard and Lake View) are still welcoming visitors from all around Australia. Dow’s Pharmacy is a magnificent time capsule of a building in Conness Street and remains exactly the way it was when Hilda Dow finally closed the doors in 1968. The Federal Standard in Main

Street features printing equipment from the 1970s to the 1920s where people can explore the print media as it existed before today’s digital media. And of course there is Lake View in Victoria Street - the childhood home of Henry Handel Richardson, pseudonym of Ethel Florence Richardson, author of The Getting of Wisdom and trilogy The Fortunes of Richard Mahony in which she describes her experiences in Chiltern. Chiltern is well-known for its history but now there are also exciting new businesses in the main shopping precinct. day and night of music, good safe times, free camping and a complete sensory overload – welcome to the Beechworth Music Festival. Enjoy a diverse range of alternative music, acts and artists which allow you to indulge in the soundtrack of this weekend. Independence with a good dose of attitude mixes up the musical smorgasbord to unlock, soothe and shake up your senses. BMF is located on the beautiful rolling hills of the former Mayday Hills Asylum (now decommissioned – phew!), in the heart of Beechworth. The stage is set at the bottom of an outdoor grassed amphitheatre with mountain views in the background

and tree shaded fence lines. The 2016 line-up includes Briggs, King of the North, The Public Opinion Six, Big Smoke, My Left Boot, The Sugarcanes, Liv Cartledge and Band, Shewolf, Mutton, Richard Perso, Geoff Jackson and DJ Mermaid. Beechworth is one of Victoria’s finest and best preserved historic gold mining towns and was built on the splendour of the early Victorian gold rush. Add to that the history surrounding Ned Kelly, his connections to Beechworth and the most comprehensive collection of artefacts housed at the Ned Kelly Vault, all part Beechworth’s historic precinct.

Indulge yourself and stay a little longer to discover and experience everything the region has to offer. From gourmet produce and award winning wines to breathtaking views, cycling, swimming, bushwalking and camping, you will always find plenty to see and do in Beechworth and the North East region of Victoria. Music is a central point to any vibrant culture and in the north east Victoria and surrounding regions the calibre of musicians and artists is astounding. A key ‘ideal’ of the Beechworth Music Festival is to provide local and regional artists and upcoming young artists with a new opportunity to perform and promote their music. Playing alongside a diverse range of established national acts and artists, these local muso’s help create the uniquely curated Beechworth Music Festival, friendly to all. Playing in a live context on stage at BMF allows regional artists to further sharpen their entry point into the cultural fabric of the North East and become part of the backbone of the local and broader

music industry and community. These musicians and artists are unique and truly talented craftspeople who devote themselves entirely to the making of music and culture in an organic, inclusive manner and the organisers of BMF are extremely excited and proud to present these great acts on the line up for BMF each year. Alongside these artists BMF organisers provide an opportunity for local and regional community organisations and businesses to build their capacity as they participate, provide services and share in the long term benefits this new festival brings. Of the many ways to define culture, music is the one that provides a platform for people to build and participate in their community, enhancing their local and regional culture. Be a part of the Beechworth Music Festival on the Australia Day long weekend for a unique community experience while helping to support local and regional talent. B

eechworth is known for its amazing stories and rich colonial history. Join our local guides to lead you on our Beechworth Ghost Tour. Be lead through the halls and uncover the secrets of the former Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum in the grounds of La Trobe at Beechworth. The world famous ghost tours run seven nights a week. The Beechworth Lunatic Asylum, as it was originally named, was built during the height of Beechworth’s gold rush period in 1867 and operated until its closure in 1995. It housed tens of thousands of people described as “lunatics”, “idiots” and “imbeciles” - some of them described as the worst lunatics in the British Empire. Around 9000 people passed away here in its 128 years. As a result, Mayday Hills is considered one of the most haunted locations in Australia. As the dusk settles overlooking the township of Beechworth you will be led through the distant and deserted buildings of what once was one of the three major asylums in Victoria. ‘ You will go deep into the heart of the old hospital and experience the wards and their mysteries.
