What’s On

IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN.
It seems like only yesterday it was Christmas and suddenly in the blink of an eye, we’re here again.
The days have become longer, the sun a whole lot hotter, there’s a buzz in the air like something big is coming.
And it is: the promise and excitement of a summer about to be well lived.
Though with that comes reflection on the year that’s been, one filled with many highs and lows.
With the largest floods in more than 150 years hitting the EchucaMoama region, along with further flooding across Rochester, Barmah and surrounding areas, it’s been a tumultuous couple of months.
Drawing parallels to the pandemic, while tragic, this has shown the unconditional community support offered in the region.
Even in the toughest of times, Echuca-Moama residents have rallied together to help one another.
And this coming summer will be no different, after the effects of COVID-19 and now the floods, businesses will again be finding their feet and will need that community spirit to push on.
Now’s the time to put your heart and soul into supporting local, and with all on offer in the following pages, why wouldn’t you?
If you’re a music fan, make the most of local events in your own backyard with the Riverboats Festival coming in February or trek down the road to the Girgarre Moosic Muster this January.
Don’t hold off on heading to the rodeo in Echuca, or make a day of it visiting markets across the region and take comfort in knowing you’re purchasing from local stall-holders.
Make it a summer to remember, enjoy every minute of the sunny days and if you’re stuck for ideas, this edition of What’s On has all you need.

THE RIVERBOATS MUSIC FESTIVAL STARTED MORE THAN A DECADE AGO. IT WAS CREATED FOR MUSIC LOVERS BY MUSIC LOVERS, WITH A GOAL TO PUT PATRONS’ EXPERIENCE AT THE FOREFRONT.
That goal has been realised, with the Riverboats Music Festival becoming a must for any die-hard Australian music fan.
“We put more time and effort into ensuring the festival has a perfect visitor experience than any other festival out there,” festival director David Frazer said.
“Every single choice, no matter how small, gets scrutinised to ensure it’s perfect for our festival-goers.
“Our food trucks have an application process, and we curate all our food vendors so that there is a wide range to choose from for our patrons.
“In the 11 years of the festival, we’ve gone through six different toilet companies, because even a decision as small as that had to perfect for the patrons.”
But it isn’t just the food and toilets that the Riverboats Music Festival team stresses over they also spend an entire year putting together the best line-up of performers possible.
In years gone by, famous Australian acts such as Paul Kelly, The Teskey Brothers, Missy Higgins, The Cat Empire and Australia’s own Eurovision star, Kate Miller-Heidke, have performed at the Riverboats Music Festival.
“We try and focus on Australian artists,” David said.
“We’re so fortunate in Australia, that we have so many incredible artists, in so many differing genres. “Diversity is so important with our line-up, so we try and get artists from so many different genres so there is something for everyone.
“Americana, country, blues, hip hop, indie the list goes on of the genres you’ll find at the festival.”
Last year, the festival was headlined by Indigenous artist Baker Boy, who also performed at the 2021 AFL Grand Final.
Although this year’s line-up hasn’t been announced, David said fans would be extremely happy with it.
“We’re putting the final touches to the line-up at the moment, but we are really, really excited by it,” he said.
“It is looking really diverse and is looking really strong so we’re keen to see what our fans think of it.”
Because of the many genres that are on show, the festival is a targeted at all ages.
“We’re very similar to the Meredith festival, in that our age range is so great,” David said.
“We have young people, families, middle-aged the spread of fans is so fantastic.
“We want to make sure it is as accessible for everyone, and that is where our almost obsessive care for the experience comes in.”
The festival will be held from February 17 to 19. For more information and venue details, head to: www.riverboatsmusic.com.au
IT’S NOT OFTEN YOU GET TO EXPERIENCE GORGEOUS BUSHLAND, STUNNING WILDLIFE AND THE BEAUTIFUL AND HISTORIC ECHUCA FORESHORE ALL IN ONE GO.
But that’s what’s on offer when you hire a paddleboard from Echuca Moama Stand Up Paddle. Founded in 2015, Echuca Moama Stand Up Paddle offers guests the opportunity to experience the power and might of the Murray River as they paddle downstream to the Port of Echuca.
“It’s the most beautiful to way to see Echuca-Moama and the incredible nature that surrounds it,” Echuca Moama Stand Up Paddle founder Jess Snelson said.
“Seeing this part of the town by paddle, instead of by paddle-steamers, allows you to truly take in the area and appreciate the beauty of the place.
“It really is the best way to experience it.”
The tour lasts for two hours, with all participants being given a tutorial on how to paddle beforehand. Participants will begin at Chinaman’s Bend, before paddling downstream 4 km to Victoria Park, taking just over an hour.
“We meet at Vic Park and then shuttle everyone upstream to Chinaman’s Bend so that they can paddle downstream,” Jess said.
“It’s so much fun and can be enjoyed by people who are five years old or 105 years old.
“Your little ones can sit on the front of the paddleboard, and children eight or over can probably even go solo.
“There is honestly nothing better than watching the sunrise while paddling on the Murray, or watching it set.
“It’s just so beautiful.”
Echuca Moama Stand Up Paddle offer tours seven days a week, with prices starting at $50 per person.

AUSTRALIA DAY IS A TIME TO CELEBRATE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN AUSTRALIAN, AND THE 2023 AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS IN ECHUCA WILL BE NO DIFFERENT.
Echuca Rotary Club will again hold its annual celebrations on January 26, honouring the amazing work done by the residents of Echuca.
Awards for Citizen of the Year, Young Person of the Year and Community Group of the Year will be handed out on the day, with speeches from the Campaspe Shire mayor and an Australia Day ambassador.
“The day is about celebrating what it means to be a citizen, and our awards celebrate what it means to be an Australian citizen and a resident of Echuca,” Echuca Rotary Club past-president Mike Stansbury said.
In previous years, the Australia Day celebrations have taken place in partnership with Moama, but in 2023 there will be two separate events.
“We decided to split our celebrations and do it by councils, so ours will be for the Campaspe Council,” Mike said.
“It’s going to be more intimate than previous years, but it will be more concentrated on celebrating the people of Echuca.”
The Australia Day celebrations will be held at Hopwood Gardens in Echuca, with free entry.
The presentation of awards will begin at 7.45 am, with entertainment and a breakfast barbecue following the formalities.
“I encourage anyone who is thinking of coming, to come,” Mike said.
“It’s an opportunity to join with others to express joy in the citizenship of Australia, as in, what it means to be a citizen.”
Echuca Rotary Club will also hold a dinner on Australia Day eve.
“The Australia Day eve celebrations will be more of a social occasion,” Mike said.
“We will have live music and entertainment, a great dinner and more interaction between members of the community.”
Tickets for the Australia Day eve dinner are available to purchase through the Echuca Rotary Club’s website.
THERE IS NOTHING MORE ICONICALLY AUSTRALIAN THAN SPENDING SCORCHING HOT SUMMER DAYS IN THE WATER, AND IN ECHUCA-MOAMA IT’S NO DIFFERENT.
Ever since the Aqua Island water park opened, it has been a hit with locals and visitors, providing much-needed relief during the hottest of days.
Aqua Island is back again this year, and it’s better than ever.
“We’re back, and we’re ready for a big season,“ Waterfront Moama and Aqua Island owner Jayne Bares said.
“We’ve got lots of new and exciting obstacles to challenge everyone.”
Aqua Island features a series of inflated obstacles, connected to provide maximum fun for all who want to make a splash.
The water park features a giant slide, blast bags, a huge jungle gym, trampolines, balance beams and so much more.
“You can try to conquer all the obstacles, or you can try and wipe them out,” Jayne said.
“There’s a great variety of shapes, sizes and functions that make the activities exciting and entertaining for everyone.”
Aqua Island is suitable for all ages, with children as young as three being able to join in the fun, making it a true family affair.
Entry to the park starts at $25 per session, with each session lasting about three hours.
Life jackets are provided, and qualified lifeguards are on duty to ensure everyone has a safe and fun time.
Group bookings are available, with Aqua Island being the perfect choice for birthday parties or Christmas break-up parties, with endless fun guaranteed.
“Aqua Island is the best fun you will have this summer,” Jayne said.
Aqua Island is due to open for the summer from the end of November. It is at 1725 Perricoota Rd, Moama.
EVERY YEAR, THOUSANDS OF WATERSKI LOVERS CONVERGE ON THE MURRAY RIVER AT ECHUCA-MOAMA TO WATCH THE SOUTHERN 80.
Regarded as the most prestigious waterski race in the world, hundreds of competitors try their luck at the 80-kilometre course.
It’s held on the Sunday of the second weekend in February, with a qualifying time trial being held the day before.
“Just as Bathurst is synonymous with V8s, the Southern 80 is with waterskiing,” Moama Water Sports Club president Steve Shipp said.
“You could go anywhere in Australia, and mention Echuca-Moama, and they will know about the Southern 80.”
“It really is the Melbourne Cup of skiing, it’s the most iconic race in the sport.”
The course, which runs along the Murray River from Torrumbarry to Echuca, features more than 120 turns, with skiers reaching speeds in excess of 190 km/h.
“The record for the race is under 30 minutes, so that gives you an idea of how fast these boats and skiers are going,” Steve said.
The race is open to all ages, with a range of age and skill brackets, with competitors from Europe and North America travelling down under to compete.
“We have racers who are under 10 who reach speeds of 60 miles an hour, all the way to our experts who are the best in the world,” Steve said.
“We don’t like having boats pass each other, and so that’s the reason for why we started doing the qualifiers the day before so the fastest boats and skiers could go first.”
The Saturday before the race, all the competitors will race in a ‘blitz’ race, with the top 40 times having a shoot-out for pole position.
“The qualifying shoot-out has only recently been added to the weekend, but it allows all competitors to get the best chance to win,” Steve said.
“Each competitor starts one minute after the other, so this shoot-out means the top teams have enough of a gap to make sure they don’t have to pass unless there is a fall or error made ahead.”
The Southern 80 attracts visitors from all over the country, who line the riverbank to watch as the boats and skiers fly by.
Last year, the event generated about $13 million for the local economy, with more than 30,000 people attending the race.
“If you haven’t been before, you really are missing out,” Steve said.
“The atmosphere, the excitement, the competition you don’t find this at many other places.
“It’s something that everyone should experience once in their life.
“It’s just an iconic event.”
The 2023 Southern 80 will be held from February 10 to 12.
WARM UP YOUR HIPS AND VOCAL CORDS BECAUSE THE KING AND THE BIG O ARE COMING TO ECHUCA.
Dungala Event Centre is bringing Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison to town for a dinner and dance that is not to be missed.
The Kings of Rock and Roll will be bringing their biggest hits to the show, including Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes, Suspicious Minds, Oh Pretty Woman and You Got It for fans to dance and sing along to.
Paul Fenech and his son Anthony will be performing as Elvis for the two shows, while Orbison will be played by Aaron Mansfield, who is Australia’s number one Roy Orbison tribute act.
“When we were interested in holding events like these, Fenech and Mansfield were the first and best performers that came to mind,” Dungala Event Centre marketing and events co-ordinator Wendy Love said.
“I used to work with Paul Fenech when I did cruises on the Sydney Harbour and his performances were always so great, and the crowd always loved them, so I’m sure those who come to our events will love it just as much.”
The shows will be held on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28, with the tickets including a three-course meal and beer, wine or soft drinks.
“The performance isn’t the only thing to look forward to, the menu for the evening is going to be delicious,” Wendy said.
“We have a grazing platter for entrée, and then have two delicious options for mains, as well as two options for dessert.”
Tickets for the not-to-be-missed event are $125 each, with a proceed from all ticket sales going to Echuca Neighbourhood House.

Echuca Moama Uniting Church will host its annual Christmas by Candlelight once again, with local singers performing.
“We’ve been holding this event since 2015 and it is always such a hit with the community,” Uniting Church member Anne Peace said.
“It gives members of the community an opportunity to come and sing their favourite carols, no matter what experience they have.”
This year, the River Voices Community Choir and Friends will perform, with residents of EchucaMoama encouraged to join in and perform.
“We have people who come every year to sing with us. They don’t sing in a choir, but they love to join in with our carols each year,” Anne said.
“We will have all the classic carols sung, with some readings dispersed in between the songs.
“It’s such a beautiful night.”
The carols kicks off a week of Christmas festivities at the Uniting Church, with its famous Christmas tree display returning this year.
“Each year, we set up the hall with a display of Christmas trees,” Anne said.
“Community groups get to donate a tree and decorate it however they like, and we display it.
“In years gone by, the local Irish dancing group decorated a tree, as well as the local women’s craft club, the Scouts and the school.
“It’s always so wonderful to see each group’s different design.”
The carols will be held on Sunday, December 11 at 7 pm, with a donation required on entry.
The Echuca Uniting Church is at 115–117 Hare St, Echuca.
YEEHAW. STRAP ON YOUR CHAPS AND PULL ON YOUR BOOTS, IT’S TIME FOR THE RODEO.
After a successful event last year, Echuca is welcoming back the M5Rodeo, bringing Australia’s best bucking stock action with it.
Families of all ages are invited to come along for what will be a night not to be missed.
“We’re bringing a better and more polished show back this year,” M5 Promotions founder Nicole McDonald said.
“We’ve expanded our CowKids hour which will give more opportunities to the kids,” Nicole said.
“We have a full program for the kids, ranging from the mini bucking bulls to the junior roping events.
“Our junior riders will spend the CowKids hour with the local kids, which will give the local kids a chance to meet and learn from them.”
Entry to the CowKids hour is free, with families encouraged to come and try out the activities on offer.
The main performance will follow CowKids hour, with professional riders taking to the arena.
“Our senior riders will ride bulls, ride bareback, and will also take part in the roping events, as well as other skills,” Nicole said.
“All the major spills and thrills of the rodeo will be on offer.
“It’s a fantastic way to try out the sport and see some of the best in Australia show off their skills at the same time.”
“We’re a family-owned business and so we have created an event that is perfect for families,” Nicole said.
“This is an opportunity for families to come and enjoy a night out that you wouldn’t usually do.
“The kids are in a safe environment, so parents get an opportunity to sit back and enjoy the live action. It’s a win-win.”
The Echuca Rodeo will be held at Rotary Park, Echuca, on Friday, February 24, with gates opening at 4 pm. Tickets available at the gate.
IT’S TIME TO FIX YOUR BIKE, CLEAN YOUR RUNNERS AND TIGHTEN YOUR GOGGLES, BECAUSE THE ECHUCA MULTI SPORTS WEEKEND IS RETURNING IN JANUARY.
Echuca will once again play host to the Wharf to Winery swim and triathlon, with athletes of all abilities encouraged to participate.
“The weekend is accessible for all,” Echuca Moama Triathlon Club president Luke Barlow said.
“We have a kids’ triathlon and an adult one after it, and our Wharf to Winery swim is swum downstream, so anyone can join.”
The triathlon will kick off the festivities on the weekend of January 21 and 22.
A junior triathlon, split into age groups, will be held on the Saturday morning, with the juniors completing a shortened version of the main course.
The adults will complete a 600 m downstream swim followed by a 20 km bike ride and finish with a 5 km run.
“We’ve been doing this for quite a few years now, and the reception is getting better and better each year,” Luke said.
Participants are required to bring their own equipment for the event, with none being available to hire on the day.
To cap off the Multi Sports Weekend, the Wharf to Winery is held on the Sunday, with participants swimming 3 km down the Murray River.
“People seem to get daunted by the 3 km, but I think the average time in the water is just over 35 minutes,” Luke said.
“It’s a great challenge for anyone that likes swimming but hasn’t done anything like it.
“You’re never going to get a better opportunity to do a current-assisted swim over that distance and I think that is what’s so popular about it.”
The swimmers will be accompanied by patrol boats, ensuring the swim is safe and to provide help if anyone needs assistance.
“You really feel the history of the port precinct with the paddle-steamers and the red gums — it’s just a great place to swim,” Luke said.

INITIATIVE.
Students from several schools in the EchucaMoama region will have the opportunity to display their work from November 11 to December 4.
Echuca Moama Arts Initiative president Tim Smallwood said the youth exhibition allowed visitors to see what our future artists will be doing.
“It’s interesting to see what young people are working on,” he said.
“You see a lot about what they’re thinking by the type of art they produce.”
The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and the Shepparton Art Museum both have student exhibitions, showcasing the work done by young people during the year.
“It’s really important to give young artists the opportunity to share their work, and we are really happy and proud to give our gallery space to these students to help them in the journey,” Tim said.
The Foundry Art Space will also be exhibiting art by members of the Echuca Moama Arts Initiative (EMAI) in December and January.
The Members Summer Exhibition is an open exhibition, allowing artists to showcase whatever art they wish to.
“This is the one chance of the year for those who have supported the Foundry or EMAI to put up their work in a gallery,” Tim said.
“We hold the exhibition in December and January to give these artists an opportunity to sell some of their work before Christmas, which really helps them.
“Our primary role is to support the arts and artists in Echuca-Moama, and the regions surrounding it, and this exhibition really helps us to do that.
“We do this every year, and the turnout is always brilliant.
“The variety is enormous — in subject matter, size, price, just everything.”
Entry to the Foundry is free, with the space being completely run by volunteers.
The Foundry is open from 10 am to 4 pm, Thursday to Monday, at 17 Murray Esplanade, Echuca.

THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN RELAXING ON THE RIVERBANK ON A HOT SUMMER’S DAY WHILE YOU WAIT FOR SOME FISH TO LATCH ON TO YOUR BAIT.
Living near or visiting the Murray River means there is no shortage of great fishing spots where you can cast your rod and hopefully snag some dinner.
Along the Murray, yellowbelly (golden perch), Murray cod, bream or redfin are all there to be caught, so here are a few spots where you can reel in one of these beauties.
The Torrumbarry Weir is a well-known spot for fishing, and rightly so.
The Murray River widens and deepens at this point, meaning there is an abundance of fish
swimming in the water, ready to be caught and taken home for dinner.
Murray cod are the most popular in this part of the river, with golden perch also another target.
Barmah is another well-known spot where anglers head to to increase their fishing game. This spot is upstream from Echuca-Moama, where the river races and narrows, and where the fish are usually waiting for their food to come home.
For patient anglers, this is a spot where silver perch, Murray cod, common carp and European perch can be caught, and usually, quite easily.
It’s a bit further out of town, but Ulupna Island is a great spot to set up shop and cast your line. There are also some great camping spots on the island to help you make a weekend out of it and hopefully catch some fish.
Similar fish to Barmah will be found, with silver perch and Murray cod being quite common this year.
There are plenty other spots where you can cast your rod, so no matter where you set up, you should be having a lot of luck this year.
THE FAMILY TO CAMP. LUCKILY, THE ECHUCA-MOAMA REGION HAS AN ABUNDANCE OF GREAT CAMPING SPOTS.
This is the perfect spot for those who like to take their boat out when they go camping.
Located in the Murray Valley National Park, this camping spot has access to a boat ramp, toilets, picnic tables and barbecues. It’s probably closer to glamping than camping.
The national park is one of the best in the region, but no pets allowed.
Why not spend the night camping on Australia’s largest inland island.
The island has a lot of cultural significance, being an important
Indigenous site, where artefacts such as shell middens, scar trees and oven mounds can still be seen today.
The internationally recognised wetland offers free camping and fireplaces, making it a perfect choice for families looking for unforgettable nights.
Located inside Barmah National Park, this free camping site is a great spot for those who love nature and the tranquil sounds of the river.
It’s a great family spot, with fireplaces meaning you can roast marshmallows as the sun sets or
even cook the fish you caught earlier that day when you went fishing on the Murray River. Drop toilets are available, but dogs are not allowed.
Although Betts Beach does not have any toilets available, it does have picturesque views of the Murray River and the surrounding flora and fauna.
Located only 8 km from the Echuca Moama Visitor Centre, it is an easy spot to visit for the night for families who are looking for a free spot to camp.
Dogs are permitted at this site, so you can bring your fur-babies along to enjoy this beautiful spot on the river.
Located adjacent to the Murray Valley National Park, this spot is perfect for those who are not your regular campers and who are looking for a break away from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives.
This camping ground has toilets, barbecue facilities and sculptures and is one of the most picturesque campsites in the region. Dogs are permitted at the campsite but are not permitted in the adjacent national park.
This spot is located 48 km from the Echuca Moama Visitor Centre and is perfect for a weekend away this summer.
There are many other great spots to camp in the area, and for more information visit: www.echucamoama.com

WHAT BETTER WAY TO SPEND YOUR WORK CHRISTMAS PARTY THAN AT THE TROTS.
This year the Elmore Pacing Cup will be held on Tuesday, December 22, with a great night of harness racing guaranteed. However, for the second year in a row, the race meet will be held at the Bendigo Harness Racing Club as the Elmore Harness Track undergoes upgrades.
The night, which will feature the Elmore Pacing Cup and the Elmore Trotters Cup, will also have live music and entertainment to make sure everyone has a night they will remember.
“It’s a perfect night for Christmas parties or other gatherings,” Elmore Harness Racing Club secretary Gary Cooper said.
“We’re going to have high-class racing, live music and a courtesy bus bringing guests from Rochester and Elmore to Bendigo.”
Because the race meet has been moved to Bendigo, the prize money has been increased — meaning high-quality fields and racing.
“Up to $10,000 will be on offer for some of the races so we will see some really high-quality horses come and race,” Gary said.
“If you are a harness racing fan or are looking for a great way to end the work year, there isn’t a better place to come.”
For more information regarding the courtesy bus, phone Gary Cooper on 0448 855 850. The Bendigo Harness Racing Club is at 646 McIvor Hwy, Junortoun.
FROM THE GREAT BARRIER REEF TO THE DAINTREE RAINFOREST AND THE TWELVE APOSTLES, AUSTRALIA HAS AN ABUNDANCE OF WORLD-FAMOUS NATURAL LANDMARKS.
Sadly, these well-known sites often overshadow some of the lesser-known spots, many of which deserve some time in the spotlight. One of these forgotten spots is the Gunbower Island Wetlands.
Home to a diverse range of waterbirds, wildlife and aquatic plants, the wetland is a nature lover’s dream.
Birds such as sea eagles, ibis, spoonbills and herons frequent the wetland, as do kingfishers, parrots and swallows.
On a hot summer day, freshwater turtles can be seen sunbathing on logs, and kangaroos, emus and wallabies feed along the banks of the lagoon.
For those who like to spend their summer days keeping active, the wetland also features numerous
cycling trails the 8 km Gum Lagoon Cockatoo Trail being a popular choice. There is also a 5 km canoe trail. The course is marked by yellow buoys and takes about two hours to complete.
Camping spots are available for free nearby for those wishing to spend a bit longer than a day trip, with fireplaces also available.
This culturally significant wetland is a definite must-do this summer. The Gunbower Island Wetlands is located inside the Gunbower Island State Forest.
the Gannawarra is a region loaded with natural features ready to explore. Relax on the banks of the Murray River, enjoy water sports on Kerang Lakes, paddle the waterways of Gunbower Island, or reconnect with nature at Koondrook Retreat.
Call Gateway to Gannawarra Visitor Centre on 03 5456 2047 or visit www.thegannawarra.com.au to plan your escape.
The Moulamein Racing Club is holding its annual race meet on December 10, bringing hundreds of avid racegoers to the picturesque track.
It’s the first time the club has hosted the meeting since 2019, and club secretary Katarni Mcglashin said they were ready to welcome back fans.
“We have upgraded our pavilion, added new toilet facilities, so it is going to be a much more accessible and well-put-together experience,” Katarni said.
“We didn’t want to host the meeting if it wasn’t authentic.”
The dirt track, which is set on a relatively untouched rural reserve, features a short 100-metre straight, making it a unique experience for both the horse and spectators.
“Each country racing club is special,” Katarni said.
“They have their own identity, their own feel, their own set up. We have one of the most picturesque tracks which is set under the box trees, so it’s a really unique experience.”
The day, which will see the see the town’s population quadruple, includes a six-race card as well as the highly competitive Fashions on the Field.
“The openness of the track allows people to experience the day how they want to,” Katarni said.
“They could be having a family’s day out, a ladies’ day, a day with the footy boys or a Christmas party.
“No matter what, they will be having a great day.”
Food trucks and a bar will be available for visitors.
Moulamein Racing Club is on Moulamein Rd, Moulamein, NSW.
Organisers hope the Bendigo Rodeo will shake off the COVID-19 restrictions that have plagued the event for the past few years and are expecting a huge turnout.
The Cows Kids Hour will be an early feature, which is a chance for local children to show off their skills.
At night the main action starts, when the top bull riders from as young as 14 will be holding on for dear life.
Nicole McDonald from M5 Rodeo promotions said the rodeo was a major drawcard for Bendigo, with a crowd of more than 3000 fans expected to attend.
“We haven’t had proper crowds for a while considering the recent events, but will be expecting a bumper crowd for this,” Nicole said.
She said the highlight would be watching the best riders trying to hold onto a bucking bull.
“To see [these] athletes hold on to dear life for 30 seconds at most without falling off, it gets the crowd going.”
Nicole said the rodeo was also a boost to Bendigo’s economy.
“It is a real money maker for the town of Bendigo, and it is important that we have these events to attract people to the great town of Bendigo,” she said.
The rodeo will be held on January 20, and for more information visit: www.m5rodeo.com.au
For each ticket sold, $1 will be donated to assist in research for motor neurone disease.

The Girgarre Moosic Muster will be held from January 4 to 8 in Girgarre.
THE NAME SAYS IT ALL AT THE BIG STRAWBERRY, THE SWEET RED FRUIT IS THE STAR ATTRACTION.
At Koonoomoo on the Goulburn Valley Hwy, 8 km from Tocumwal and 9 km from Cobram, the Big Strawberry is one of Australia’s iconic ‘big’ landmarks, and tourists come from all over to take a photo of the mammoth fruit.
But the Big Strawberry is not just a monument to one of Australia’s favourite fruits.
There is also large fully licensed cafe, production room, strawberry patch, giant indoor playground, history room and man-cave memorabilia.
For history lovers the memorabilia is an incredible collection of bikes, vintage signs, pinballs and other collectables, plus the Vintage Trail is a route of historical markers and vintage strawberry production machinery.
But the star is the strawberry, and at the Big Strawberry it is celebrated in the products, the décor and the menu.
Owner Darren Hayes is especially proud that all products are made on site with locally sourced ingredients.
Guests can tuck into cafe favourites and desserts inspired by you guessed it strawberries.
“We have strawberry pancakes, waffles, ice-cream and milkshakes,” Darren said, naming just a few of the items on the menu.
For school groups, the Big Strawberry holds lessons in cultivation, propagation and meal inspiration, as well as pest control and the process of getting food from paddock to plate.
To burn off all that sweet energy, the Big Strawberry also has two playgrounds to keep the kids entertained while adults can relax over a coffee.
And once you have had your fill, you can always take a little bit of the Big Strawberry home with you via the gift shop.
Inside you will find strawberry wine, chilli plum sauce, strawberry sauces, jams and merchandise.
“The Big Strawberry is a great road trip stopover,” Darren said.
“It’s a family business with Australian-made products made on site.
“We have awesome service and a great variety of products to choose from.”
The Big Strawberry is open 9 am to 3 pm daily, excluding public holidays.
Spanning more than 8750 hectares, it is the perfect location for sightseeing, birdwatching, walking and cycling.
“The wetlands are perfect for those wanting to see nature in its fullest,” a spokesperson for park management said.
One of Victoria’s best-kept secrets is home to more than 250 native bird species, 830 plant species, 30 different reptiles and five fish species.
Winton Wetlands boasts research and preservation of important species such as the growling grass frog, soon to return after being declared extinct in the local area.
Park management also conducts a program for long-neck turtles, bred onsite to boost population numbers.
“These programs are super important for the wetlands so we can keep those animals that are native to the wetlands in the wetlands for many years to come,” the spokesperson said. Also keep your eyes peeled for the little shrew-like marsupial, the yellow-footed antechinus. After you’ve taken in the sights, the Mokoan Hub and Cafe is the place to grab a bite to eat while you sit back and enjoy the wilderness.
The cafe boasts expansive views of the wetlands, with the restaurant offering up all sorts of treats for kids and adults, including milkshakes, coffee, cakes and meals.

FOR THE THIRD YEAR RUNNING, TONGALA IS HOSTING THE NOW ICONIC HAY BALE TRAIL.
This year, there will be 20 art installations using hay bales, with Disney characters taking centre stage. The trail, which is about 1 km long, will take visitors around Tongala, with the one-of-a-kind installations situated along the walk.
“Not only will visitors see the amazing art, but they will also get to see what Tongala has to offer,” committee leader Rhiannan Brennan said.
“Tongala might not be a town a lot of people rush to visit, but we have a lot to show, and this installation gives people a reason to come and check us out.
“It’s perfect for families and the elderly, and anyone else who is interested in some unique art.”
The concept of the trail started during COVID-19, when of the residents turned their hay bale into Bluey and Bingo from the children’s television show Bluey.
“It went viral and got a heap of traction so we thought we could do a few more and make it a Christmas hay bale trail,” Rhiannan said.
The installation will run from Friday, December 2 until January 2023, so there is plenty of time to check it out.
For more information, head to the Tongala Hay Bale Trail’s Facebook page.
