“Simply greater” Greater Hume Shire

G

et your knits out - the Holbrook Submarine is getting a makeover. The HMAS Otway in Holbrook has always been a must see attraction on the Hume Highway but this June it’s turning into a Yellow Submarine. In conjunction with the Holbrook Sheep and Wool Fair and World Yarn Bombing day, the Otway is being ‘Yarn Bombed’ with Yellow knitting. The YarnBombing of the Otway is set to be the biggest ever attempted in Australia, and a quirky must see when travelling in the region. This woolly spectacle will be taking place from 12 June, with the Yellow Submarine on display until the 12 July. The Holbrook Sheep and Wool Fair is a three day exhibition held 11-13 June at the Holbrook Showgrounds. Schools day on 11 June, provides secondary school students workshops and judging competitions along with an interbreed competition for schools to compete in. The remainder of the show is devoted

to open sheep and fleece competitions where exhibitors are vying for a number of prestigious trophies. The final day comprises the Open Sheep Interbreed Competition and the Riverina Group Final of the Meat Sheep Judging Competition with the winners qualifying to represent the group at the state finals during the Sydney Royal Easter Show. August is an art lover’s delight in Greater Hume Shire. Expose yourself to art at the Holbrook Rotary Art & Photography Show, from 30 August to 6 September. This annual event is a showcase of local and regional artists, with special appearance by guest artist Suzie O’Shea, pastel artist, painter, ceramicist and owner-operator of a small gallery in Bendigo. Held at the Holbrook Shire Hall, viewing hours will be Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm, and Monday to Friday 11am to 4pm. Find Farm Art in the Bush at the Wirraminna Environmental Centre in Burrumbuttock from Saturday 9

August. Enjoy the art amongst the spectacular natural scenery on the banks of the Wirraminna Billabong. Farm Art works are sculptures made from recycled materials, pieces that can be found lying around on the farm. You may see a dog made of old car parts, or even a pig shaped mailbox. Admire the art works then spend some time in the unique wetlands that make up Wirraminna. The environmental education centre provides opportunities for discovery and learning about the natural environment, the ecology of the local woodlands and the beauty of native plants. Extensive signage throughout the centre provides visitors with information on Landcare, native plants, wetlands and wildlife habitat. Convicts and pottery don’t often go hand in hand, but this short term exhibition at the National Museum of Australian Pottery does just that. “The Sherds of Thomas Ball” is an exhibition containing pottery made

Farm Art in the Bush at Burrumbuttock. by the convict potter Thomas Ball at his Pottery in Brickfield Hill, Sydney c. 1801-1823. Thomas Ball, a trained Staffordshire potter was found guilty of Highway robbery in 1797, and transported to Australia, where around 1801 he set up a pottery and produced a variety of simple hand-painted decorated dishes, bowls, pans, chamber pots, cups and saucers, most of which was utilitarian vessels for everyday use in homes in Sydney and Parramatta. For more information on these ‘simply greater’ events, contact the Visitor Information Centre on 02 6036 2422 or email tourism@greaterhume. nsw.gov.au.

Strategically located on the Hume Freeway and the Melbourne to Sydney railway line in the heart of Indigo Shire Chiltern is an ideal place for that day trip... or to attend the Visual Arts Exhibition or famous Chiltern Antique Fair. Yackandandah – pretty as a picture

Y

ackandandah is regarded by many as one of Australia’s prettiest villages. Nestled in the foothills of Stanley State Forest, the picturesque town is surrounded by lush, green vegetation and magnificent wildlife. Yack, as it is fondly known, is rich in heritage history and in natural resources (granite, gold, clay and sparkling spring water). The close knit community is as strong today as it was in our early pioneering

days when it was built on the gold discovered there in 1852. It all begins with the descent from the surrounding tree covered hills of the Stanley State Forest, past the avenue of English trees, across the historic stone bridge with its sparking creek...here you’ll find the township of Yackandandah. Today, Yackandandah is a thriving community, built upon the solid values and vision of its pioneers and miners. Yackandandah people are

It is home to many talented artists and artisans from around the world and so is brimming with arts, crafts and antiques that will delight and surprise. Yackandandah has earned an impressive reputation for its spectacular, not to be missed, annual festivals and events. Over thirty community groups exist here, from fishing to the arts. There’s even a yachting squadron ... all within a population of 700. There is some wonderful accommodation in Yackandandah along with some interesting attractions. One definite stop on your visit is to Schmidt’s Strawberry Winery

Enjoy a visit to Rich Glen Olives

t

he tree shakers have arrived at rich glen for another fantastic harvest – we hope. the yield may be down this year - in comparison to the crop of the century we had in 2013 – but this is just how olive farming is, with a bumper crop one year and a light on the next. nevertheless, the table olives are huge and with the best of the crop we hope to produce another gold medal for rich glen olive oil. at rich glen olives we have a gallery in our farmgate store where customers can learn about the harvest and oil making process and we also have a great range of interesting antiques and farm memorabilia. visitors might even be lucky enough v if they visit during June to see all the action of the harvest – come and see with your own eyes the hustle and bustle of this busy time. Every day at the farmgate is a busy one with our popular café serving piping hot, homemade soup and toasted focaccias. rich glen have also recently released an exciting range of ‘blokes sauces’ and the girls always have a

pot or two of sensational seasonal produce on the stove top to warm up your day. at the moment we have lily pilly jam, crab apple, explosive bruschetta mix, lime curd and quince jam as well as a new range of garden fresh pesto’s and butters – all grown in our vegetable maze. a couple of new additions to our allnatural skin care range are a men’s shaving balm, make-up remover and aluminium free deodorant.

arrawonga Lollyshop is a lolly and chocolate lover’s paradise. Owners Helen Holmberg and Rodney Crawford have loved owning the Yarrawonga Lollyshop for more than a year now and recently closed for two weeks to make some much needed changes to freshen up the shop. “The shop desperately needed a revamp,” said Helen. “We repainted the pick and mix bright pink, freshened up some old tired shelves and purchased new shelves. “The new bamboo flooring has been the best change we have made, as it has created an old fashioned style to our shop. “It is really wonderful to receive such positive feedback on how great it looks.” Yarrawonga Lollyshop has a wide range of Australian made chocolates and lollies, including sugar free varieties, plus Dutch and English favourites, even Dr Pepper soft drink. “I am very keen to source and stock Australian Made items as must as possible. It’s really satisfying to be able to tell our customers where they are made,” said Helen. “It is so exciting just walking into the shop and finding all those favourite lollies from when you were young like Choo Choo Bars, White Knights, Castlemaine Rock and lots more,”

Helen said. A wander through the shop engages your senses - sight, smell and taste, reminding many visitors of their childhood days. Customers often leave the store, arms laden with goodies, saying “I haven’t had that since I was a kid” or “do you remember when?” “The pick and mix is very popular with people of all ages, I always think it’s great to be able to select just the lollies you love,” Rodney said “There are more than 86 different lollies to choose from so I am sure you will be able to fill up a bag or maybe two” Yarrawonga Lolly Shop also offer a selection of party and cake decorations, which are now marked down until all stock is sold so more room for more lollies and chocolates. During busy periods the shop is open seven days a week so you will never have to miss out on that sweet treat. You can find Yarrawonga Lollyshop at the bridge end of town diagonally opposite to the Yarrawonga Post Office. Yarrawonga Lollyshop is on Facebook and Instagram where you can keep up to date with all that is happening. Customers are welcomed with a friendly hello, bright smiles and great service as they browse through the bevy of sweets available at Yarrawonga Lollyshop.

A visit to the Yarrawonga Lollyshop is sure to bring a sweet smile to your face.

elax with family and friends, enjoy a glass of wine and experience all the beauty the lush Barmah Forest and Murray River have to offer with a visit to Cape Horn Vineyard this winter. Located on a sand hill wedged between the Murray and Goulburn Rivers upstream from Echuca and on the very western edge of Western Moira, Cape Horn Vineyard is named after the river bend resembling Cape Horn on the tip of South America. The Vineyard was first planted to Shiraz grapes in the 1800’s serving the thriving River Boat trade. The property is owned by Sue and Ian Harrison and the Vineyard has been re-established, with the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Durif, Marsanne and Zinfandel vines. Their philosophy is to produce high quality boutique wines that reflect the vineyards’ distinct microclimate, rich sandy soils and native eucalypt surrounds, whilst maintaining fruit-driven

varietal characteristics. Cape Horn Vineyard has sprawling lawns with plenty of room for the kids to run around while the rest of the family relaxes and is also dog friendly due to the Harrison’s own affection for two very loveable resident Labradors. Today Cape Horn Vineyard offers visitor’s tastings at the cellar door of a fine selection of wines made from their own fruit. Guests are encouraged to pack a picnic and take the trip to the vineyard. Phone the cellar door on 03 5480 6013 for more information.
