WHAT'S ON - Winter-Spring 2015
Welcome!
Winter-Spring is a remarkable remake of life along the Murray.
Shorts, thongs (except for those hammered into the thong tree) and T-shirts vanish but the winter fashions give locals and visitors alike the chance to seriously dress up when they go out.

And out is where you will be, with a program packed with entertainment for everyone – from the Winter Blues Festival to the Elmore Field Days. In between there is the hi-octane Deni Ute Muster, which this year will feature Cold Chisel, the American Truck and Iron Show back in Echuca-Moama and just up the road the increasingly popular Gunbower Cup. The town’s one and only race meeting for the year, the people come in their thousands for the picnic race meeting and as it is run at the start of Spring, fashions are always a high priority. The Winter Blues is one of the big events on the river calendar and it is spread from the Port of Echuca along the Murray, providing the music with an unparalleled backdrop. While the Elmore Field Days rank as one of the biggest agricultural events in the
country and there is so much on show it is almost overwhelming. Winter also sees the local wineries take on a special ambience, such as Cape Horn with its wood-fired pizzas and rich reds, what a delightful riverside combination on a chilly winter afternoon. This year winter got another good launch off the back of the second, sell-out, Great Taste of Echuca-Moama. This degustation showdown between some of the region’s leading chefs has immediately established itself as a blue-ribbon event and if you were not lucky enough to score tickets for 2015 that should make you even hungrier come 2016. It is a classic example of the ever-changing face of what Echuca-Moama has to offer locals and visitors. Earlier this year we had the inaugural EchucaMoama Flavours Festival or you can spend some time following the Backroads Trail, which will introduce you to local producers and their artisan wares. Enjoy your stay in the Echuca-Moama region – and please make sure it’s a happy and safe one.

Welcome to our town
– t h e r e ’ s p l e n t y o f r oo m t o m a k e i t y o u r s Welcome! Winter/spring is the perfect time to enjoy the wonderful heritage and history of the Echuca-Moama region. The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre is a great starting point, it is “must see” as it transports you back to the 1860s and explores the events and individuals who provided the foundation for what is Echuca-Moama today. Of course the visit to the Discovery Centre, steam display, the sawmill and the historic wharf would not be complete without a trip on one of our magnificent paddlesteamers.
But it’s not all about history and heritage. Wonderful day trips on the Backroads Trail, the Gold and Iron Bark Trail or parts of the Long Paddock Touring Route will connect you with many smaller towns and communities in our region to enjoy the special experiences on offer.
A historic town walking tour or a port after dark tour will give you the story behind some of our past legends as well as some of the dark secrets of the past.
Of course one of the highlights during July is the annual Winter Blues Festival – this year on July 24, 25 and 26. Recognised as one of Australia’s best Blues Festivals it presents more than 40 artists at 20-plus venues around the twin towns and is sure to be another great weekend.
One of the new family products which have recently added to the EchucaMoama experience is the “Twisted – Science at Play” centre.
The friendly staff at the Visitor Information Centre can provide you with more details on all the regional attractions and events.
Located in the Port Precinct, this handson science experience is proving a winner with everyone in the family.

For the 16th year, and for three days, blues and roots musicians from across the country will make Echuca-Moama that little bit more soulful.
FESTI V A L T O B ANISH THE
Winter B l ues
The Echuca-Moama Winter Blues Festival is on again in 2015, and between July 24 and 26 more than 40 performers will play to crowds of nearly 20,000. Winter Blues Festival committee chairman Peter Williams said one of the reasons his festival was so popular was because it put the town first. ‘‘It’s all free for the audience — any event we put on in the street we pay for, and anything going on inside a venue they pay for,’’ he said. ‘‘This way, all the money stays in Echuca-Moama.’’ Mr Williams said the festival won’t just be cheap, audiences are bound to see something new this year. ‘‘We turn over around 40 per cent of the performers each year, so we guarantee you’ll see at least a few fresh artists,’’ he said.
That’s a significant number considering it’s the state’s largest blues festival and one of the largest in the country. In 2015 the talent will be focused on High St, with many performances taking place on the main drag in Echuca. The Winter Blues Festival also gives audience members the chance to say, five years from now, that they saw an artist when they were breaking out. ‘‘We get a lot of young people who are just beginning with few opportunities to play before they try out at the festival,’’ Mr Williams said. This used to be done at a single stage but newcomers will get a choice of venues. Mr Williams hopes the festival can put on blues singing and blues dancing workshops. The Echuca-Moama Winter Blues Festival runs from July 24 to 26 and takes place at venues across EchucaMoama.

“We celebrate the rural way of life here. It’s a good time with mates, and a great chance to get out and camp for the weekend.” The annual event will also attempt to break a number of Guinness World Records, including the largest gathering of blue singlets, which currently stands at 3924 people.
Marketing and PR coordinator Erica Laing said it is little wonder the Muster is as popular as it is.
“Last time Cold Chisel played here in 2010, we broke the record for most Utes and most singlets, and I definitely think we can smash it again this year,” Ms Laing said.

A little bit country & a little bit western
The 2015 Echuca-Moama country music festival will bring some of the country’s top performers to town, including father-son duo Rino and Jade, southern songbird Kinta and Lockington performer Rupe Adams. In its ninth year, the three-day-festival always pulls a big crowd of country and/or western enthusiasts and promises a great weekend of country music with a first class line up of local and interstate artists. Moama RSL will host the event, which kicks off at 7.30pm, Friday, August 7. Organiser Roz Giles from Big River Entertainment said people will be offered three days of entertainment under the one roof.
Come on baby light my fire The region’s most athletic and talented firefighters will converge on Echuca for the biennial Australasian Firefighter Championships. Thirty teams from across Australia, New Zealand and – for the first time – Fiji, will compete in 10 events in a bid to be crowned Australasia’s best. “This is a rare chance to see a competition like this in our own backyard,” said Echuca Fire Brigade secretary Ron Hooper. “This is only the second time it will be held in Victoria, after Lakes Entrance hosted it in 2007.” The competition will be held for three days, with teams of four to five members battling it out in a range of events requiring skills in the use of fire extinguishers, hose bowling, rescue, pump operation and striking of targets. Good value is assured for spectators and competitors alike. The championships will be held at Victoria Park Reserve, Echuca, between October 23 and 25.
“We have two rooms – the Anzac Terrace and the sports lounge,” she said. “People can get up and have a dance or relax and have a laid back afternoon, the choice is theirs. “It’s always a great success with lots of guests from around the state, it’s a fun weekend all round.” Other artists include Craig Giles, Roland Storm, Anthony Tenace, Allan Carroll, Olive Bice, Kim Ritchie, Ray Macartney, Cameron Mason, The Good Time Band and Jamie Nielson. A weekend pass for the festival costs $25, a Sundayonly pass is $15. Tickets available at www.ticketebo.com.au/moamarsl For more information contact Big River Entertainment on 0408 597 307 or book at Moama RSL Club reception on 5482 6677.
Echuca-Moama Doll Show a perennial crowd favourite Dolls and teddies of all shapes and sizes will be on display at the Echuca-Moama Doll Show on July 25. The 15th edition of the annual event is set to take place at the Anglican Church hall on High St Echuca with a range of features to entice visitors. Taking centre stage is the traditional doll competition, where several dozen entrants will be judged on a range of points, including authenticity and outfits. This year, the show will be putting up a special doll as the major raffle prize, with proceeds going towards worthy causes in the local community. “It’s an absolutely beautiful doll that was 16

made by one of our club members, Pauline Norton who unfortunately died rather tragically a couple of years ago,” EchucaMoama Doll Club secretary Gwenyth O’Neill said. About 20 traders will be exhibiting at the show, with doll parts and other accessories for sale. Doll doctor David Short will be on hand to repair broken vintage dolls. The show will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm on July 25 at the Anglican Church hall on High St, Echuca. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4.50 for concession and $2 for children over six. n u R y b m Bru The theatre gang gang to stage Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Echuca-Moama Theatre Company is at it again with its second theatre production this year, and it is set to be a blast from the past for many audience members. Following the incredible success of Hairspray, the EMTC cast and crew are excited to present Victoria’s first amateur production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

38
Chitty is set to leave audience members gaping in childlike astonishment with its cheerful music, comedy duos and traditional costumes. The star of the show of course, is the glossy 1920s car, which will ‘carry’ the human stars of the show and spread its wings into a glittering night sky.
Echuca motoring muster attracts a mob of Jaguars
“We are really looking forward to it,” director Lesley Summers said. “It’s so much fun and we are going to have a real car, which many productions don’t get.”
It may not feel like it, but it has been 40 years since the first Jaguar XJ coupe was produced.
people are still interested because of the beauty of the vehicle,” he said.
The cast will pull together the magnificent Hollywood classic in three months.
So if you’re feeling a little old and want to be young again get down to the Aquatic Reserve on October 18.
“Many will see Jaguars they’ve never seen before or even knew existed.”
“It’s a multi-age show with performers as young as eight and as old as 80,” Mrs Summers said.
Recapture the heady days of flower-power, Polaroid pictures and Chiko Rolls and reminisce your summer love (was it Debbie, Sharon or Wayne?) when dozens of Jags line the reserve for the Jaguar XJC Muster. The XJC - produced between 1975 and 1977 – is described as the most beautiful Jaguar ever made. Car lovers from around the region are invited to attend the free event to celebrate the 40th anniversary. Jaguar owners will be converging in Echuca from across the country. Organiser Phil Evans said the day was an opportunity for people to get together, whether they knew much about cars or not.
A cavalcade of Jaguar XJCs will form a procession for a drive from the Mercure Hotel to the reserve at 8.30am. Join in and bring along a picnic lunch, spread out a blanket and settle down for the day. Local food vendors will be nearby, as are toilet facilities - including those with wheelchair access.
“Expect plenty of colour and fun.” Families who loved Mary Poppins and its songs will enjoy this production and it appeals to both children and adults. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one for the whole family - with plenty of unforgettable songs, electrifying dance routines and magical characters set to feed your imagination way after the final curtain closes. The show runs from October 23 to 31 at the Paramount Theatre in High St Echuca. Tickets are $33 for concession and $39 for adults, available for purchase at the theatre. There will be a matinee at 2pm both Saturdays and the first Sunday, with evening sessions at 7.30pm Thursdays to Saturdays.

The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 12-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria ,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish & chips.
Fish in a Flash uses only premium Australian fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

Elmore F ield Days
There is plenty on offer for farmers and agricultural enthusiasts at this year’s Elmore Field Days.
The new undercover stabling shed will be put to the test for the first time, while the Taste More Food and Wine Pavilion is back for its second year. “The Pavilion will be bigger and better this year, with a different mix of people,” said field days' secretary Sam Watkins. The three-day event showcases some of the latest machinery, innovation and techniques used in the agricultural industry. Visitors will be treated to as many as 700 stalls featuring the latest technology and handy gadgets. Craft displays and local gourmet food are also a big part of the field days. The popular ‘Ag Art Wear’
competition is back for its 15th year, with contestants battling it out for the best outfit crafted from everyday items found on an agricultural, horticultural or fisheries property. About 35,000 people attended the Field Days last year, and Ms Watkins said a big reason was because visitors can see everything close-up.
The Elmore Field Days will take place on October 6, 7 and 8, with gates open between 8.30am and 5pm each day.

“People can come and touch - you can’t touch on the internet,” she said. “You can do your homework beforehand and then look at what’s here and actually kick the tyre.” Ms Watkins said it was a great family day out where children could also learn about the industry. “The Field Days not only promotes different businesses and what they’re selling, it is also a showcase to our younger generation on all the different types of careers you can have in agriculture,” she said.

There is no doubt cutting hair is in their blood. Three generations of Echuca barbers reflected on several decades in business and the trends which had come full circle. Gordon ‘Doey’ Elliott, 87, opened a barber store in 1958 in Moama and later shifted to Echuca in the 1960s. Before he became a barber, Mr Elliott served in the navy for 13 years and cut the hair of fellow crew members on the Quiberon ship while he was a teenager. ‘‘They called him Curly Elliott. He cut hair on the ships for extra money.’’ In 1978, Maree was awarded the ‘Best Barber in Victoria’ by Sir Henry Winneke Governor General of Victoria.

“Better to be a has been than never been” she joked. Her son Rick Wilcock, who trained in New Zealand, closely resembles his grandfather and has followed in his footsteps. Antique barber chairs remain in the Echuca shop, which have been carefully restored by Ms Wilcock, who is in her 39th year of barbering. ‘‘I’ve seen things come full circle,’’ Ms Wilcock said. ‘‘Men’s barbering has come back into fashion and we have brought it back to Echuca-Moama.’’ Gordon first brought lady barbers to town and now Maree is bringing the men barbers back into fashion.

Keep the kids warm and occupied this winter with fun indoor activities. Echuca-Moama has plenty of attractions to entertain, inspire and get both brains and bodies moving. Just because it is cold does not mean you need to bunker down in front of the fire, pull down the blinds and wait it out until spring. Why not head to a museum, try to build a river at twistED, meet paddlesteamer engineers at the Discovery Centre or play in the ball pit at Squiggles Play House. Enjoy this selection of just some of the fun activities you can engage in this winter in Echuca-Moama
Po r t o f Ec h u c a D i s cov e r y C e n t r e Children can explore the story of Australia's pioneering spirit and learn how Australia's inland river system connected a fledgling colony to its growing cities and outside world, through the interactive displays at the Discovery Centre.

Just down the road
Your journey doesn’t have to end at the town limits. You’ll find plenty to see and do in Echuca-Moama’s surrounding towns.
Rochester
23mins from Echuca Rochester was home to Sir Hubert (Oppy) Opperman, legendary cyclist and later politician, whose statue off the main street is a popular stopping point for tourists. The Opperman Sports Museum is situated in the Shire Service Centre next to the Rochester Shire Hall in Mackay street. The museum contains personal memorabilia from Oppy’s sporting and political life including many photos, certificates, awards, trophies and the bike he rode over the last years of his life. Several panels have now been installed showing the various sporting clubs and individuals who have contributed to Rochester’s sporting history. A heritage walk from the main bridge to the red brick bridge takes in the old saleyards bull ring, the old water tower and shire hall, while the western bank of the Campaspe River has been set aside as a passive recreation reserve. Rochester Historical Society has its headquarter in Rochester’s second public school building, which was built on the High St site in 1874. Campaspe Weir can be reached by travelling south on the Northern Hwy toward Elmore and turning left on to a gravel road after 9km.
Tongala
21mins from Echuca Tongala district was settled by squatters in the 1840s. Irrigation subsequently ensured the success of an intensive dairying industry. In Tongala, a series of murals depict the evolution of the dairy industry and groundwater issues. Other murals give an insight into the armed forces,
58
while a monument pays tribute to the Australian Light Horse, and an avenue of honour recalls those who lost their life in the Armoured Corp in Vietnam.
Lockington
33mins from Echuca Lockington is a small country town set in irrigated dairy farming country. Visitors can enjoy a picnic in the landscaped park areas, take a walk following the self-guided heritage walk or choose a route past the mural in the pavilion, the rose garden and Lions flower clock. Bring the fountain to life in the lagoon area and keep your eyes open for the Locky Ness monster. On Sunday afternoons (or by appointment) call in to Lockington and District Living Heritage Complex for a trip down memory lane, while enjoying friendly hospitality.
Rushworth
53mins from Echuca At Rushworth’s fire lookout at Growlers Hill, the view covers the historic gold mining town, Waranga Reservoir, Rushworth Forest and the Goulburn Valley. The 24,300ha box ironbark forest is the largest of its type in Victoria, areas of it covering evidence of the district’s early mining activity. But Rushworth’s history is well preserved at the town’s museum, while historic buildings also remain the heart of the town. Waranga Basin, to the north-east of the town, is a tourist drawcard in the region, providing opportunities for boating, fishing and camping, while south of Rushworth is Whroo Historic Reserve, which represents the remnants of what was once a thriving gold mining town of 1000 people and 139 buildings.
