Making art more accessible THE FOUNDRY ARTS SPACE, IN THE HEART OF THE HISTORIC PORT OF ECHUCA PRECINCT, RUNS A DIFFERENT EXHIBITION EVERY MONTH. The Foundry Art Space is not-for-profit and is completely community owned and operated. It is supported by the Echuca Moama Arts Initiative (EMAI), whose purpose is to raise the profile of the arts in our region. “It’s a historic foundry building which has been rebuilt, which makes it quite a unique space for a gallery, sort of both old and new at the same time,” EMAI chair Tim Smallwood said. Housed in the former Old Freemans Foundry building steeped in history with an eye to the future, the Foundry Arts Space supports regional Victorian artists, musicians and creative people to share this historical but contemporary space. The foundry and the EMAI act as ambassadors for the arts in the Echuca-Moama region to paint the town as an arts destination.
“We want to encourage small regional galleries, which are often forgotten about in the bigger artistic scene,” Tim said. Exhibiting local artists in the Foundry Art Space is just a part of what EMAI does. It also facilitates artists teaching classes and workshops and works on their behalf to secure grants to financially support creatives. Tim said access to the arts was good for the community’s health and good for individuals’ mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. The Foundry Arts Space is on Murray Esplanade, Echuca, and open six days a week in winter and seven days a week in summer. The entire gallery is accessible on the ground level.

Dhungala was unveiled as the name of the new Echuca-Moama bridge when it was officially opened to traffic by Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and Victorian Transport Minister Jacinta Allan in April. Dhungala is the Yorta Yorta word for the Murray River. Jointly funded by the federal and Victorian governments, the Echuca-Moama bridge has been delivered by Major Road Projects Victoria and construction partner McConnell Dowell with crews clocking more than 640,000 construction hours on Stage 3 of the project alone. The new bridge is expected to carry 10,000 vehicles a day and reduce congestion, including around the historic Port of Echuca. The original bridge was the scene of a frightful accident in 1877 which threw seven workmen from scaffolding 15 m to the ground below. Red gum beams loaded with heavy bluestone that were used to drive the pylons were being removed when it toppled over. Six workers were killed. The bridge served the busy port city well for 130 years, although in the fist year of operation there were several incidents of paddle steamers bumping into it. By its centenary, the original bridge needed replacing to service the growing towns of Echuca and Moama and the thriving tourist trade. It took years of campaigning, but now the link between the two towns is a sight to behold, and an additional visitor experience. 40

Discover the river’s rich history STEP BACK IN TIME TO THE DAYS OF ECHUCA’S BUSTLING STEAM TRADE AND CRUISE THE MURRAY RIVER WITH ECHUCA PADDLESTEAMERS. Whether it’s the PS Alexander Arbuthnot or the PS Pevensey, both authentic paddle steamers with their original steam engines, the experience is a must for any Echuca-Moama visitor. The historic boats take off from the Port of Echuca, which was the third largest port in Australia outside Sydney and Melbourne in the 1870s. It’s also where the 1980s TV series All the Rivers Run was set, which starred the PS Pevensey as the fictional paddle steamer PS Philadelphia. 52
What’s On
In her heyday, the Pevensey carted bales of wool from station properties to the Echuca Wharf before it was transferred on trains to Melbourne. The Pevensey returned to cruising the Murray River for the first time in two years in late 2021 after a transformation back to her original colours. It also saw the upstairs fitted out with traditionallythemed rooms and a tribute to All the Rivers Run including a look behind-the-scenes and original relics.
Echuca-Moama Echuca Paddlesteamers also offers functions on the Pevensey, accommodating up to 100 guests. The Arbuthnot is a smaller steamer, named after the former owner of the Arbuthnot Sawmills in Koondrook, a town downstream from Echuca. The Arbuthnot was used to tow barges loaded with red gum logs upstream from the mill. After being used to cart charcoal during World War II, the Arbuthnot eventually sank before being rescued by a group of volunteers. In 1989 she was bought by the then Echuca City Council and was recommissioned, joining the fleet at the Port of Echuca in 1994. Echuca Paddlesteamers cruise daily with tickets available at the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre or by calling 5481 2832. What’s On
July 21-24 | Echuca Directed by Lesley Robins and Tricia Deakin, and written by Mark C. Bourne, the play A Better You is set to be a knee-slapper of the highest degree. Centred around a group of women meeting weekly in their community hall, each week poses a different activity. In among the normal tasks of fundraising, arts and craft, raffles and knitting, the group leader has prepared something a little special for the women. She has arranged a session from a guest speaker, a representative of the self-help group A Better You. During the course of the evening, different issues arise, many of which have been simmering just below the surface, all but ready to blow. One member is trying to organise a wedding, another is getting over her partner leaving her for a male bikie, all while the hunt is on for a toilet roll thief. Even the self-help guru begins to unfold, battling

“We’ve been cracking our necks to get back into things and finally put on a show,” she said. “I couldn’t think of a better way to get back into live performances. It’s a really special show and is going to be a hilarious, entertaining night out, that’s for sure.” The show will be held at Radcliffe’s Function Centre in cabaret style with five performances in total, running from July 21 to 24, including an afternoon matinee. Tickets, including the performance and food, are $48 for adults and $45 for concession holders. They will be available via TryBooking. Stand up for NAIDOC Week GET UP! STAND UP! SHOW UP! IS THE THEME FOR THIS YEAR’S NAIDOC WEEK, FROM JULY 3 TO 10. Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung and Bigambul man Damien Saunders said the week was for people to learn about the “oldest living culture” and remember their ancestors who started the fight for Indigenous rights. “It means we’ve got to get up, stand up and show up and continue the fight that our Elders and ancestors have continued,” he said. “For a voice to be heard … to be recognised and be part of the system.” Damien said NAIDOC Week provided First Nations people with a voice, which helped give them an identity. “We get a chance to tell our story, people can hear local Indigenous people by having that interaction with them during this week. They can hear the truth,” he said. “The non-Indigenous people can learn a lot about the Country they are on, and where they live. ‘We get the good side and the bad sides, as it sort of wears you out when you bring up these stories.” Damien said understanding Indigenous history was important so it did not “disappear”. “If we don’t all stand up, and non-Indigenous 56

people don’t hear these stories — well, it’s going to disappear.” From day one, its always been told to me, like a bedtime story.” Damien wants to emphasise that “it shouldn’t be one week of the year”, when First Nations people are celebrated. “It’s a living culture every day, every week —there’re more opportunities instead of waiting for NAIDOC Week.

Roald Dahl comes to Echuca
FALL IN LOVE WITH THE WORKS OF LEGENDARY CHILDREN’S AUTHOR ROALD DAHL IN THE REVOLUTIONARY LIVE THEATRE PERFORMANCE ROALD DAHL AND THE IMAGINATION SEEKERS, COMING TO ECHUCA PARAMOUNT THEATRE ON JUNE 2. The interactive performance immerses the audience in a drama that sees Roald Dahl stories disappearing from their pages and the minds of children. The audience needs to help the cast save the stories before they’re lost forever, uncovering a dastardly plot by the dreaded Wurble Gobblers.
Roald Dahl’s extraordinary stories, including The BFG and The Twits, along the way. Nerine and Robbie have adapted the works of Dahl for the stage, while retaining the iconic playful silliness that audiences love about the author.
This mischievous and inventive theatrical family show for six to 10-year-olds is full of improvisation and every performance is a unique experience that brings to life the beloved tales of Dahl.
The actors developed the show in the United Kingdom as a stage show for schools and it was so successful at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival that it’s coming to Australia.
Cast members, Nerine Skinner and Robbie Capaldi, rely on the audience to dictate the direction of the improvised portions of the show, while exploring

Black ride to the red centre MOTORBIKE RIDERS WILL TRAVEL FROM ECHUCA TO ALICE SPRINGS OVER A WEEK TO START A NATIONAL CONVERSATION ABOUT DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE PREVENTION. The Black Dog Ride to the Red Centre aims to de-stigmatise thinking around depressive illnesses, and most specifically depression itself, Victorian ride co‑ordinator Bernie Garvey said. The Black Dog Ride also raises funds for small communities to run their own mental health programs. “We raise money so that we can have a grant system where small communities can apply to us for funds to run mental health projects on the ground. So that’s the end goal of our fundraising,” Bernie said. Since 2009, Black Dog Ride has held more than 100 official rides and has raised more than $1,800,000 for mental health services. The riders will start the journey from Hopwood Place, Echuca on Saturday, August 6 and ride 500 km to 650 km every day. “It gives (the riders) a physical challenge, something to work towards, and something to calm their mind and get together with like-minded people,” Bernie said. The Victorian team is prepared to take up to 200 riders, and Bernie is expecting around 2500 riders from the other states to converge on the final day for a national gathering and celebration. 60

Meadery is sweet as honey THE OLD SCHOOL WINERY AND MEADERY IS A FAMILY-RUN BUSINESS AND A MUST-SEE FOR ANYONE PASSING THROUGH THE SMALL TOWN OF WOMBOOTA. The winery and meadery was founded in 2001 by Frits and Suzanne Massee and is now continued by their daughters Freya and Kate, producing multiple variations of wine and mead, using locally sourced honey and grapes. When the couple started the winery and meadery, there was only one or two meaderies in each state, with traditional sweet honey mead being the most made. However, Frits and Suzanne began creating their mead out of local honey such as river red gum and box honey, starting a new trend in the meadmaking world in Australia. Today, the Old School Winery and Meadery is open to visitors wanting to try their game-changing mead and grape wine. 78

People are enriched by their encounter with Kutcha and left with a broader understanding of First Nations culture and how the policies of yesterday have impacted and continue to do so. “We’re all wanting a place of belonging, especially when you’ve been displaced,” Kutcha said. “As Aboriginal people, all we need to know is that we’re not the only ones in the canoe paddling upstream. This mesmerising introduction heralds a performance by renowned Indigenous autobiographical singer/songwriter and proud Mutti Mutti, Yorta Yorta and Nari Nari man, Kutcha Edwards. The show is arranged in sequences exploring Kutcha’s life through the themes of Country, Birth, Youth, Politics, Love, Culture, Healing and Hope. “When I look back at my life, and I look back at my childhood, and this album and show called Circling Time, it’s conceptualising the fact that your childhood is tapping you on the shoulder and it’s reminding you of your past,” Kutcha said.
“We need non-Aboriginal people to hop in that canoe and help us make a better tomorrow for us all. “Let’s find the commonalities and not the differences.” Without a doubt Kutcha leaves audiences enthralled with his performance, his beautiful voice, charismatic stage presence and with a deeper understanding of Australia’s First Peoples. Started in 2012 by brothers Peter and Colin, along with their partners Kelly and Sharon, Barham Vines is their opportunity to bring their passion for wine to locals and visitors. They currently produce three types of wine — Shiraz, Tempranillo and a Cabernet Sauvignon — and have a cellar door on their property for visitors to purchase their delicious drops. On Saturdays they open their boutique vineyard to visitors for wine and cheese, as “Saturdays are all about lazy afternoons, relaxing on the lawn and soaking up the bushland environment,” they said.
Along with the wine and cheese, the team at Barham Vines also offers wood-fire pizza for those looking for a more substantial bite to eat. The Barham Vines small batch, boutique winery is set in a classic Australian bush backdrop, with a sprawling space of green “enveloped in river red gums and rows of our beloved vines, so it’s the perfect place to sit back and drink a beautiful glass of red,” the brothers said. Blowhole has a story to tell TAKE A DEEP DIVE INTO THE HISTORY AND SCIENCE OF THE TOCUMWAL BLOWHOLE AND ROCKS. “When the river is low, the blowhole flows and bubbles, it seems to then come alive,” Tocumwal Tourist Information Centre volunteer Elizabeth Mitchell said. The blowhole is said to be an important place for the Ulupna and Bangarang people. The original name, ‘Tucumival’, is from an Indigenous word from the region meaning ‘deep hole’. “Some storytelling says it is a giant Murray cod that lives at the bottom of it, others believe it’s the mouth of an underground stream connected to the Murray River,” Elizabeth said. “The south part of the blowhole has a hollow sound when struck, which makes people think there’s an underground cave.” 94
What’s On
She said there’s “fascinating history” and if you did not know the story behind it, you would not understand what you are seeing. “Once you know the history and you go and view it, you can sort of appreciate it and understand it and realise that underground there is all this water movement going on.” The blowhole also contributes to hydropower and is said to supply electricity to about 1500 houses. “It’s worthwhile going to see it if you’re seeing all the other attractions in the area,” Elizabeth said. You can find the blowhole at 739 Thorburns Rd, Tocumwal.

The Big Murray Cod is one of about 150 oversized attractions around Australia, like the Big Banana. In 1967, three forward-thinking women who made up the auxiliary of the local Chamber of Commerce decided that Tocumwal needed ‘something different’ to put the town on the map. The women were Kathryn (Trixie) Moore, Alice Johnson and Lorna Nash.

Labour shortages and the ongoing battle for water in the Nicholls electorate will be two of the top campaign issues as candidates move into overdrive with a May 21 federal election announcement yesterday. Six candidates are contesting the seat, which has been held by Nationals Member Damian Drum since it was created in 2019, with more expected to be announced during the initial stages of the sixweek campaign. Plans for the re-arrangement of water rights within the electorate was a hot topic at the first candidate forum a week ago at Moama RSL.
It was there that labour shortages on rural properties, and in small business, also came to the fore. Sam Birrell is the Nationals candidate who will be attempting to take up where Mr Drum left off, as the 61-year-old former Fremantle coach and Geelong footballer retires after serving first as a state member for Northern Victoria and then as Member for Murray. Steve Brooks is the Liberal candidate for Nicholls and has been campaigning almost as hard as the Independent candidate Rob Priestly. Then there are the minor party representatives, Dr Robert Peterson from Seymour (United Australia Party), Rikkie Tyrrell and the recently
announced Australian Citizens Party candidate Jeffrey Davy. Mr Brooks said he was really excited to have a date and looked forward to meeting up with community members throughout the campaign. “I will continue doing what I have been doing since the very start of January, meeting with community groups and reaching out to people to come and speak with me,’’ he said. Mr Brooks’ family has a long history in the electorate at Cobram. “There is a lot of history with my family, extends from Albury Wodonga through to Echuca,” he said. “I will be asking all voters to look closely at the candidates and
ask the question, ‘who will be able to advocate most strongly for the community?’.” Nationals candidate and former Shepparton business group leader Sam Birrell said now there was a date the electors of Nicholls had a choice. “They can choose between the politics of negativity and attack or for a party, which is focused on regional Australia,” Mr Birrell said. “I am an optimist and this election is about delivering for Nicholls. “I will doing my best to ensure no more water leaves our region.” Independent candidate Rob Priestly said this election would be one of the most important in the
history of the region. “The next term of government will see the conclusion of the MurrayDarling Basin Plan,” he said. “Having a voice dedicated to our issues, representing our region, will be crucial.” Mr Priestly said the focus of the major parties had shifted to other voters in other places, leaving our community without a voice. “We are ready for the campaign, the community are looking for change, and the date has been set,” he said. “For the first time ever, Nicholls will be a focus for decision-makers with a real competition here. Let’s make the change we need.”

It was originally just “stuff” owned by George Chrystie, but then he and his late wife thought maybe they could make something special out of it. “We retired as contractors and decided to move up here and just open a museum — you don’t make any money out of it but it’s a lifestyle,” he said. “You wouldn’t do it unless you liked what to do, and I’m not the sort of person who can sit around watching telly all day.” George’s wife passed away just a few years ago and he thought he would have to close. But it’s the support of his friends that has kept the Tocumwal museum open. “If I didn’t have friends, I’d probably have to shut it up, but it gives me something to do — I’m still here” he said. 96

Set on the Edward River, Deniliquin offers a variety of activities for visitors, including bushwalking and water sports. The Peppin Heritage and Visitor Information Centre is the ideal starting point.
