The Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge will be hosted on the Edward River at Deniliquin from February 10-12, 2023.

It is run by a community committee, with all proceeds going toward restocking the Edward River (Kolety) with fngerlings, or associated local projects.

The action will be centered on Deniliquin’s Memorial Park, with the fshing zone running from Four Post Camp to Benarca Bend. Only a limited number of anglers will be able to enter, so you need to get in quick to secure your spot.

Event coordinator Andrew Jeferies said prizes to the value of $30,000 are up for grabs. The most coveted of them is a $15,000 boat and motor package from Deniliquin Yamaha.

Adult entrants can also enter the ‘win your weight in beer’ rafe sponsored by Riverina Cellars, and there will also be a Dash for Cash competition.

There’s also a massive rafe with tickets available for $5 each – which represents two fngerlings released into the river.

“All money raised through the rafe and the Challenge weekend itself will fund catfsh and yellowbelly fngerling releases specifcally,” Mr Jeferies said.

“As a not-for-proft event, our only goal is healthy rivers and ensuring fshing can be enjoyed for generations to come.

“That is especially important after the black water events because of the current foods.

“We will be channelling the funds raised back through the lagoons restoration group (the Deniliquin Kolety Lagoon Landcare Group), who have done an amazing job already.”

Adult entry is $150, and juniors under 15 can register for $110. Juniors can enter the adult competition if they pay full price. Your ticket gets you entry into the boat prize draw and the $5000 minor prize draws, and entry to the Dash for Cash. Five meals are also included in the ticket price.

Rafe tickets will be extra, and you don’t have to be a registered entrant to be in the running. First prize is a 75 inch fat screen television valued at almost $2000,

donated by

Solutions sponsored the $1700 60L ARB Elements weatherproof fridge freezer up for grabs as second prize, and third is a range of goodies from Middy’s Deniliquin valued at $1000.

Purchase your registration and rafe tickets by clicking the ‘book now’ button at www.edwardfshingchallenge.com.au.

Rafe tickets are also available at Deni Betta Electrical and Outdoors, North Side Car Solutions, Middy’s Electrical Deni, Deniliquin Yamaha, Deni Party Hire, Deni Tyre Service and Deni Auto Glass.

DROP IN A LINE

This year is going to be a bit different when it comes to fishing and camping.

Local rivers and creeks fooded in October/ November, and authorities predict water levels will stay high and most camping areas inaccessible due to the ground too wet to pass. Deniliquin’s resident fshing expert Rhys ‘Westy’ Westcott says the fsh will be biting, but anglers should proceed with caution. Here is his advice.

We will need to take extra care on our waterways this season due to the river being in food.

With the high volume of water there will be more trees that have fallen in, and areas that were once safe may now be a danger with unknown submerged trees and logs being moved by the strong currents. That being said, once the water has subsided enough to launch your boat the fsh will be there waiting on an easy feed.

Deniliquin and district hosts some of the best fshing and camping spots going around. Here is a quick guide to some of the rivers, creeks and camping spots around the area.

Start your tour near Mathoura at Picnic Point, where the Edward River and the Gulpa Creek start their winding journey through the mighty river redgum forests of the Murray Valley National Park. The creek is about 25k long and meets with the Edward River. It is a small and narrow waterway that holds some great fsh, I’ve found walking the banks of the creek to be the most rewarding way to fsh.

You can follow the creek from Mathoura through into the Gulpa forest section of the National Park where there are many spots to pull up and walk the banks. It’s a great little creek for using surface lures. Best times are early morning and late afternoon.

The Edward River also starts its journey at Picnic Point. The river runs it course for 383km before it fows back into the Murray River near Kyalite.

The Edward would have to be one of the best fsheries around, with great numbers of Murray cod and yellowbelly.

From Picnic Point the river is narrow and fast fowing, until just past Four Post Camp where the river starts to open up.

Fishing around the Four Post area is one of my favourite places to fsh. There is an easy launch boat ramp and good camping facilities - you can’t go wrong.

The area known by locals as the powerlines, just downstream from the Four Post, holds some huge cod well above the magical metre mark and some solid yellowbelly up to 60cm.

Trolling deep diving lures of about 100mm to 150mm through this area seems to get the best results. Failing that, you can always try your luck with some bait.

A little downsteam you’ll come across the spillway near the Lawson Syphons - a small overfow from the Mulwala channel. During the irrigation season this has some good fows running through it and it pays to fsh close to the rocks. Whether you’re using lure or bait, the fsh are always there looking for a easy feed. It includes those annoying, but sometimes fun to catch, carp.

Heading into Deniliquin, Willoughby’s Beach to the Deniliquin National Bridge is always worth a try. With willow lined banks and sandy beaches, this area provides some great habitat and structure for cod and yellowbelly to hide in - well worth a try.

My favourite place to launch the boat would have to be at the Sloane St boat ramp in Deniliquin’s west. The water from here downstream is up there with the best fshing water going around.

From the Deniliquin Boat Club to the mouth of the Boggy Creek, this stretch is genuinely deep and holds an abundance of timber and reed lined banks. In the warmer months this area is great for catching yellowbelly. Bobbing your bait around the fallen timber will hopefully entice a solid one out of hiding.

Benarca Bend, just down the Calimo Rd about 12km, is the next place to throw a line in. There’s plenty of camping grounds, a good boat ramp, deep snaggy

water and reedy banks. And for those who haven’t got a boat, you’ll catch just as many fsh as those who do as there are plenty of accessible spots you can drive to and just cast out your line.

Another great destination is the Billabong Creek. The Billabong starts its journey near Holbrook and makes its way 320km to Moulamein, where it enters the Edward River.

One of the hidden gems on the Billabong is Wanganella. This region is home to great camping grounds and fshes well all year round. Although not overly wide or deep, the amount of timber and snags that are laying in the creek ofer some great cover for fsh. And there’s defnitely no shortage of them in there. If you’re looking to camp there in style, try your luck at the Wanganella Creek Camp, where there are great facilities and a great family atmosphere. The best bait to use here would be live yabbies and fresh bardie grubs to catch your cod, and if your looking to catch some yellowbelly you can’t go past the shrimp and worm cocktail.

Lures

My go to lures would have to be anything that’s is made by Coddog. Locally made, only the best components are used in these lures. My favourite is the 110mm log hopper. They come in a great range of colours and bib sizes. The Coddog surface lures can be used straight out of the packet, ready to catch monster Murray cod.

Bait

You can’t beat the shrimp and worm cocktail for catching all native fsh. Live yabbies and fresh bardie grubs will also be hard for the fsh to resist. If you can’t get your hands on either, cheese and chicken strips seems to be all the rage at the moment and has proven results.

Remember to call in to see Pete at Deniliquin Betta Camping & Outdoors for all your fshing tackle and camping needs.

And if you see or suspect illegal fshing, call 1800 043 536. Make the call and make the diference.

all years of history of the iconic event, starting right back where it begun.

UTE MUSTER MEMORIES Relive two decades of

It is Deniliquin’s biggest and most famous event, and now you can explore why people love the Deni Ute Muster year round.

A museum dedicated to the event sits at the entrance of the event’s festival site on Conargo Rd, Deniliquin. Opened in March 2021, the museum tells the story of how the Deni Ute Muster began in 1999.

The museum covers more than two decades to the present day, paying tribute to the ute, of course, and all history behind the festival and its attractions. At the musuem, visitors can check out an amazing collection of memorabilia.

A library has been created containing magazines and newspapers which featured the muster, books about the Deni Ute Muster, and even books on the artists who have performed at the event.

Items on display include the contents of a history box for each year of the event, including stickers, articles, tickets, wrist bands and merchandise. Honour boards listing competition winners have also been produced, and there’s also interactive touch screens where you can go through photos from each year of the muster.

The retail space means locals and visitors can pick up some great souvenirs. Goodies include shirts, hats, vests, drink bottles and stubby holders, as well as the classic blue singlets worn at the event.

The centrepiece of the current exhibition is a 1979 HZWB Bitza designed and built by ‘Ferrel Kev’, and now retired to the exhibition. There are also two Isuzu Wasp utes which date back to the early 1960s, and a

fully operational 30ft Comet windmill, which acts as a tourism attraction giving a great photo in golden hour and educational tool. You can also grab a snap of the famous entrance gates while you’re there.

Tour and school groups are also catered for. There is a corporate meeting area/function centre available for hire, where catering is available. Parking is also available.

The museum is open 9am to 5pm weekdays, and on weekends by appointment. Entry is a gold coin donation. For further information phone (03) 5881 3388.

The Deni Ute Muster is held each year on the NSW Labour Day weekend, which in 2023 is September 29 and 30.

The Deni Ute Muster is a two-day festival held each year that celebrates country music and rural life. It features performances from world class artists, previously hosting stars such as Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Alan Jackson, Carrie Underwood and Cold Chisel. The event is famous, of course, for mustering up world record numbers of utes to the town, as well as iconic activities of rural life such as whip cracking, bull riding and driving competitions.

GOLF IN DENI Stay and Play...

Deniliquin Golf Club hosts one of the most picturesque courses in the region, though unfortunately it has suffered some damage in the recent flood event.

However, you can still enjoy the beauty of this golf course, alongside the kangaroos, kookaburras, superb parrots, echidna, goannas, lizards, pelicans and a host of other wildlife that abounds in this paradise of nature.

During the foods, the back six holes which are protected by a levee system remained open, but the other 12 holes were inaccessible. However, they have now been opened up as the damage is repaired, though it will take the club a little longer to get them back to their usual pristine condition.

At its best, Deniliquin golf course with its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, is a shining example of Australia’s magnifcent golf courses. And with the hard work of staf and an army of club volunteers, getting it back to top condition will not take long.

If you’re looking for a trip away, the Deni Golf Resort has you covered with a range of packages, built to take the stress out of fnding accommodation. Its 22 units overlook the ninth fairway, and are nestled among bushland.

The resort and course are in a superb location on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. It’s just 30m from the resort to the frst tee, and it’s a shorter distance to the bushwalk track.

The course perfectly refects a chance for all golfng standards to enjoy a fun and challenging round.

By modern standards the course is not long — 5817 metre par 72 for men, and 5118 metre par 72 for ladies. However, of the back tees it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered.

Poor shots fnd the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition.

A feature of Deniliquin golf course is the ‘same day play’ principle that applies. On most days you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 and book your tee of time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staf will cater for your golfng needs.

After your round on the course, enjoy the club’s facilities or relax under the veranda adjacent the pro shop. Friday nights are a speciality in the clubhouse, when there are meat rafes, great meals and a fun atmosphere where locals will make you welcome. For the latest information on clubhouse opening and activities, phone (03) 5881 1325.

If you want to practise your game, a new addition in 2022 at the Golf Club is the under cover driving range, which features an automated ball dispenser and lighting, allowing extended play on your terms. It’s simply a matter of getting a token or swiping your credit card to get a bucket of balls and work on your swing.

Visitors are also encouraged to enter any of the club’s regular competitions, which are on its website. These include a Saturday medley, ladies events on Tuesday and Thursday, and men’s stableford on Wednesday. In early 2023 there will be additional charity days, usually on a Sunday, which had to be postponed due to the food.

Double the explorng

TWIN TOWNS

The twin towns of Barham-Koondrook ARE worth exploring this summer.

Surrounded by state forests and national parks, the towns remain relatively cool and the natural world is easily accessible right at your fngertips.

It can get hot during the daytime, but that’s the perfect opportunity to stop in town for a cool drink or ice cream, according to Barham Newsagency owner Tish Conder who also provides the town’s information centre.

Farm stays and town-based accommodation abounds for all sorts of intrepid travellers. For those who are ready to rough it, camping is available in and around the town — however, ensure you come prepared for the summer heat.

A short drive through agricultural country housing orchards, timber, pork and dairy farms will see travellers out into natural forest before too long.

With so many opportunities to explore the Murray River, it makes sense to centre your time around this stunning feature of the southern Riverina.

• Explore the national parks and state forests by foot, kayak, stand-up paddle board, or boat. Head out early to avoid direct sun. Camping is available at Gunbower National Park, and the Koondrook-Perricoota State Forest.

• Charter your own path through the myriad cycling and walking trails which snake through the bush and townships, including the beautiful Barham Boardwalk and Riverwalk. At low tide, the boardwalk goes underneath the famous,

century-old bridge which connects the two towns, as well as being joined to paths along the river. From there, visitors can head west toward the bowling greens, or east to the caravan park and boat ramps for a dip in the Murray.

• Jump on board a relaxing river cruise along the Murray River from Barham, or the Gunbower Creek, aboard the Wetlander.

• Cool of at one of the many cafes, pubs, restaurants and ice creameries in central Barham. An array of multicultural dining is on ofer, including Thai, Spanish tapas, Italian, and Aussie ‘pub grub’.

• The Barham Federation Botanic Reserve is a fve minute trip from town. It houses more than 125 plant species, and supports 130 bird species, plus mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Take some binoculars and see what — or who — you come across.

Barham is also the perfect base for day trips to Moulamein, Wakool, and Gunbower Island.

“Barham is perfect for those who want to escape, slow down, and enjoy the perfect balance of nature, great food, and boutique shopping on the Murray,” Tish said.

“Come and be on the river, fnd a lovely sandbar and enjoy the hospitality of all the local venues — you can’t really go wrong.”

Murumbidge hot spots

There are three communities in the Murrumbidgee Council region to explore - Coleambally, Darlington Point and Jerilderie.

Top experiences across the three towns include Altina Wildlife Park, Yarrow Park Wine and Olives, the Ned Kelly Raid Trail 1879 and the Waddi Regional Heritage and Cultural Centre.

And of course you can while away hours taking in the beauty of the Murrumbidgee River and Billabong Creek which wind through the region.

It is recommended you explore all there is to see and do in the region by going to www.murrumbidgee. nsw.gov.au.

But as a bit of a guide, for those who only have time for a short stay, those who know the area best recommend these ‘town highlights in a day’ tours.

Darlington Point

Morning – By foot, bike or vehicle, head of exploring through the Willbriggie Regional Park. Relax and enjoy the serenity of the Murrumbidgee River and the river red gum forest. On a summer weekend, you may be able to book a kayak tour down the Murrumbidgee.

Afternoon – Book in for a tour at Altina Wildlife Park to experience the ultimate behind the scenes experience with some of Altina’s magnifcent animals.

Evening – Enjoy a meal at the Point Hotel, Darlington Point Sports Club or pizza and pasta from Rivedestra.

Coleambally

Morning – Take in the sounds of all the birds as you stroll along the tracks in the forests surrounding the town. You’ll be greeted by friendly locals who love the outdoors and walking their dogs. Afterwards, head to one of the cofee outlets, such as The Cofee Nest Café.

Afternoon – Take a tour of Yarrow Park Wine and Olives. Meet the owner, enjoy some wine samples or walk the olive grove and hear about the growing of the trees.

Evening – Enjoy a beverage or a meal at the Brolga Hotels or Coleambally Community Club. Alternatively, purchase some meat from the local butcher and have a barbecue in John McInnes Square.

Jerilderie

Morning – Get your walking shoes on and head for Luke Park for a walk around the lake. Or be more adventurous and take in the surrounds and sights with a walk along the Billabong Creek.

Take a lok around

BERRIGAN SHIRE

Incorporating the communities of Berrigan, Cobram-Barooga, Finley and Tocumwal, Berrigan Shire is a much-loved destination for admirers of the great outdoors and good old fashioned hospitality.

Berrigan

Berrigan is a charming country township where historic buildings still tell the stories of yesteryear and vast productive lands stretch for miles.

Meander along the main street in Berrigan and take some time to read the interpretive plaques that reveal the heritage highlights like the old post ofce building, Federal Hotel and Memorial Hall.

The Berrigan Government Nature Reserve Tank Paddock is a local initiative that has created an enjoyable walking track through a regenerated indigenous landscape.

It is a very peaceful spot for a stroll and is close to the caravan park and swimming pool.

In early spring the farmland around Berrigan turns vibrant yellow as the canola bursts into fower and promises of the bountiful season to come. It is worth a drive on the backroads at this time of year.

Cobram-Barooga

Cobram-Barooga is situated in the heart of Victoria’s ‘Food Bowl’, and is home to some of the most picturesque sections of the mighty Murray River.

Visitors are captivated by the lifestyle, with wide sandy beaches, towering gums and native bushland which blend together to create this unique holiday destination.

One of Australia’s largest inland beaches, Thompson’s Beach, is easily accessible from the centre of town and is a great spot to soak up the tranquility of the river, enjoy a cruise, meet for a barbecue or picnic and play in the sand.

It is also the perfect spot for hikers to head out to explore Quinn Island.

Finley

Finley is a vibrant small community with great shopping, eateries, entertainment and historic attractions, but it is the Finley Lake which really draws people in.

The frst practical suggestion for a town lake was put to a public meeting in March 1964. It took a further 10 years of planning, fundraising and overcoming the difculties for the project to begin, and Finley Lake was ofcially opened on November 6, 1975.

Since then it has provided a welcome oasis for the weary traveller as well as being a venue for many and varied pursuits from fshing to bird watching, from sailing and canoeing to power boating and water skiing.

While in Finley, make sure to stop by the Finley Railway Museum in Endeavour St, to learn more about how it was the frst town selected for a pioneer railway. The rail was eventually extended to the town in 1898.

The Finley and District Historic Museum and Log Cabin is also worth a visit. Step back in time by walking through the McAllister Homestead, then on to the museum and enjoy its marvellous collection of machinery and memorabilia.

Tocumwal

Turn of the Newell Highway and discover a town nestled around the river bends and steeped in unique World War II history.

Tocumwal wears its heritage for all to see with its character flled main street and historic building facades that take you back in time.

An ideal spot from which to explore the region, enjoy exceptional food and wine, get a rush from water sports and fying adventures, relax while bushwalking and camping or visit museums on your hunt for antiques and collectables.

While here, make sure to check out the WAAAF Creek Walk. The enjoyable creek sidewalk is lined with interpretive signage that honours and celebrates the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force story, and its role in Tocumwal during WW II.

In Tocumwal there is also the recently opened Tocumwal Aviation Museum and adjoining café, where you can learn about the town’s World War II history while also enjoying a cofee or a meal.

Comunity gardens

The pleasant surroundings of the gardens lend themselves to weddings and social functions, but is also just a great place to while away a morning or afternoon. The gardens have a children’s playground and free barbecue facilities.

The Bullanginya bunyip fountain — named after the creek that fows through Barooga — is one of the highlights of the space. Although named as a bunyip, the fountain has been designed as a dragon, and is a lively sculpture for the pond. It brings to life a static rock garden, which in itself is beautiful to behold.

Created by Barooga sculptor Tom Ranken, the dragon was made using recycled machinery, keeping with the agricultural aspect of the local region. The dragon’s backbone was a piece of steel brought back from World War I. Garden committee members

say it was used by the light horse regiments, and was screwed into the ground rather than hammers to limit noise. The fountain is also made up of rabbit traps and horseshoes. The fountain was paid for by donations, and sales from the Barooga Botanical Gardens nursery.

Other features of the gardens are the large palm trees at the entrance, a commemorative sun dial and trees which include a Lone Pine, Wollemi Pine and Kauri Pine.

Other Barooga parks to enjoy:

Library Park

The Barooga Library Park is situated next to the library, on Golf Course Road (last left before you start travelling towards Cobram). The park has a new children’s playground and facilities for relaxing.

It is in a great location with the ability to be able to borrow books then go to the relaxing area in the park. Children can be entertained inside the building and out on the playground.

Barooga Adventure Playground

The wonderful Adventure Playground is also adjacent the library on Golf Course Rd. It features a specially designed multi-aged play unit, steel frame rope climbing structure, double fying fox, basket swing, quad framed swing, Kinder house play unit and four round in ground trampolines. This space also includes the Barooga Splashpad, open from 10am to 8pm daily, regardless of the weather, from October to April (and possibly longer depending on demand). It has a button to activate the water as well as a separate hand pump to operate the irrigation system.

The Barooga Community Botanical Gardens is situated in the main street of Barooga, and were established in 1992 and opened in 1993. The local community raised all the funds to establish the gardens.
