Get our on t he Edward At the heart of Deni is the Edward River (Kolety) – a place of natural beauty that’s home to well-loved beaches, swimming spots, boat ramps, long stretches to explore by kayak, and plenty of places to throw in a line in search of Murray Cod.

The Edward River is host to an array of stunning watering holes and beach fronts. Willoughby’s Beach is a great location for swimming, fishing, and camping in the forest, all while giving you the opportunity to watch the sun rise and set on the river. You will find plenty of areas to camp, perfect for those wanting a bit of privacy, and there are also larger areas for the whole family and your friends. If you want to experience the Edward River like the locals, Willoughby’s Beach is where you can start your river float. Set aside a few hours, jump in the water with your floating device and supplies, and let the current take you downstream to McLean Beach. McLean Beach, in the town’s west, is a popular spot for locals and visitors. For the young ones, there is a dedicated swimming area. This beach is also popular with boaters and skiers, with a boat ramp situated right next to the beach. Other facilities here include a barbecue area, toilet facilities and plenty of car

parking. The kiosk at the adjacent McLean Beach Caravan Park is a short walk away if you need a few extra supplies, or a special treat. McLean Beach also offers a gateway to the Beach-to-Beach Walk, which will lead you through the town to Willoughby’s Beach in the east.

Boat ramps

For those looking for something extra to get the adrenaline pumping, the Edward is a haven for water sports. With a wide river, some great bends and brilliant summer weather, young and old give water skiing, wakeboarding, or tubing a go.

• Harfleur Street Boat Ramp, Harfleur Street,

Whichever way you choose to enjoy the river, don’t forget to capture those memories on camera. The Edward makes for breathtaking photos, especially in the early morning or late in the evening. Whether it is a group or family photo, or a shot of the scenery and wildlife, it is sure to look fantastic. Then you can take the Edward River with you everywhere. What’s On Spring 2023 5

Show's bull ride spectacular More action is being packed into the Deniliquin Show schedule in 2024.

The traditional country show has been slowly growing to add even more affordable entertainment for families. The Deni Show is held the first weekend of March annually, which next year is March 1-3. In 2024, the newest addition will be a bull ride. The Deniliquin Pastoral & Agricultural Society is partnering with Woodall Rodeo Promotions to run the Rodeo Services Australia amateur competition on the event’s opening night. Also new this year is the addition of stock horse classes in the equestrian arena, in partnership with the Deniliquin branch of the Australia Stock Horse Society.

This adds to an equestrian schedule already so full it runs over three days. The Deniliquin Yard Dog Association will also be back with its Deni Yard Dog Trials, so will the Riverina Quick Shear, the Riverina Shearing Championships and the Saturday night Demolition Derby and fireworks display. Each complements an already action-packed traditional rural show schedule, which includes livestock judging (sheep and beef and dairy cattle) and wool and poultry pavilions. The traditional junior judging competition - most commonly referred to as the tiny tots competition, but for babies right through to teenagers - is also still a very popular part of the Deni Show.

What’s On Spring 2023 9

Pair this with a colourful pavilion of local arts, crafts and cookery, a vibrant sideshow alley and more around the grounds entertainment, and you’re on to a winner for a top weekend of family entertainment. The Deniliquin Show is hosted at Deniliquin’s Memorial Park showgrounds. Admission for the full duration of the show is $20 for adults, $5 for children aged five to 18 and free for children under five attending with an appropriate adult. Family packages for two adults and three children are just $40. For more information or to pre-purchase your tickets online, go to www.deniliquinshow.com.au.

Your total entertainment venue OPEN 7 DAYS What’s On Spring 2023 10

Eat, sleep and play golf Deniliquin Golf Club hosts one of the most picturesque courses in the region. You can enjoy the beauty of this golf course, alongside the kangaroos, kookaburras, Superb Parrots, echidna, goannas, lizards, pelicans and a host of other wildlife that abounds in this paradise of nature. At its best, Deniliquin golf course with its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses. If you’re looking for a trip away, the Deni Golf Resort has you covered with a range of packages, built to take the stress out of finding accommodation. Its 22 units overlook the ninth fairway, and are nestled among bushland. The resort and course are in a superb location on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. It’s just 30m from the resort to the first tee, and it’s a shorter distance to the bushwalk track.

The course perfectly reflects a chance for all golfing standards to enjoy a fun and challenging round. By modern standards the course is not long — 5817 metre par 72 for men, and 5118 metre par 72 for ladies. However, off the back tees it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered. Poor shots find the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition. A feature of Deniliquin golf course is the ‘same day play’ principle that applies. On most days you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 and book your tee off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater for your golfing needs. If you prefer the relaxation of a golf cart, there are plenty of those available too.

Soak up t he atmosphere In search of a place where you can soak up that famous country hospitality?

The Railway Hotel in Deniliquin has what you need. The venue combines all the features of a good old country pub, with the modern amenities we all want from an entertainment venue. With a change in management just before summer, there’s already been a host of improvements made at the Railway Hotel. More will be delivered this summer, with the brand new beer garden and a TAB facility being added in early 2024. The beer garden is being built in the space alongside the hotel which was previously a drive

through bottle shop. It will include a large television screen where you can watch all your favourite sports. Drop in to take full advantage of the new space, for a game of pool in the bar, or simply to escape the heat and enjoy a cold drink. The Railway’s kitchen is now also open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Raffles are held each Friday night, and once a month the hotel will feature live music or a DJ to ramp up the entertainment factor. What’s On Spring 2023 11

After your round on the course, enjoy the club’s facilities or relax under the veranda adjacent the pro shop. Friday nights are a speciality in the clubhouse, when there are meat raffles, great meals and a fun atmosphere where locals will make you welcome. For the latest information on clubhouse opening and activities, phone (03) 5881 1325. If you want to practise your game, the club has an under-cover driving range, which features an automated ball dispenser and lighting, allowing extended play on your terms. It’s simply a matter of getting a token or swiping your credit card to get a bucket of balls and work on your swing. Visitors are also encouraged to enter any of the club’s regular competitions, which are on its website. These include a Saturday medley, ladies events on Tuesday and Thursday, and men’s stableford on Wednesday. Keep an eye out for special charity days and competitions too.

Discover Deni's past, and present Deniliquin is a great place to live and has some great history in its museums, buildings, monuments and general locations.

The community of Deniliquin grew because it was near a crossing place for the Edward River. The traditional name of the river is Kolety, but it was renamed the Edward River in 1840 after overlanders were traveling to Adelaide with some cattle. Origins of the name Deniliquin are not so easily identifiable but are believed to come from altered local Aboriginal leader Denilikoon. Deniliquin was officially established in 1846 and gazetted as a municipality in 1868. You can take in many of the town’s historic landmarks on foot, by taking the Deniliquin Historical Town Walk. The others are just a short drive from the centre of town. The Historic Town Walk usually starts at the Peppin Heritage Centre and takes you through 43 historically significant locations. Collect your historic walk guide, or use the digital version, which points out some of the original Deniliquin buildings such as the Dublin Hotel, which was built in 1878, or the Federal Hotel which license dates back to 1876. You’ll also learn about the airport, cemetery, Lawson Syphon and so much more.

on drawings by architect Louis Harrison and represent art, science and literature. They were made in Italy from the best Sicilian marble and originally were a feature of the old School of Arts building, before it closed in 1943 and became the regional library. They were relocated to the Deniliquin Waring Gardens in 1950, and then relocated in the gardens in 1997 after a 12 month restoration.

Deniliquin Town Hall – Re-opened to the public after a long awaited rejuvenation, the Deniliquin Town Hall has a commanding presence in the Deniliquin CBD. Its design was the vision of JH Jones, who won a competition calling for ideas on the structure in 1875. The building was completed a year later, opened in November 1976 by Governor Sir Hercules Robinson. The clocks in the tower, which have been refurbished as part of the upgrades, were donated by Captain George Landale in 1904. The large hall with central glass segmented dome ceiling was added on in 1928.

The Multi Arts Centre is the former St Paul’s Anglican Church, built in 1866 and deconsecrated in 1977. It was purchased along with the adjoining Sunday School Hall by the former Deniliquin Council with a Heritage Commission Grant.

A base for community events, the arts and private functions, the recent upgrades have restored many of the original features. An exciting new addition is the glass atrium, which overlook a public courtyard. The Deniliquin Town Hall is open to the public regularly so that you can explore the fantastic restorations, as well as the hall’s fascinating history. Keep an eye on the Edward River Council Facebook page for the next open day date.

Both buildings are set in the delightful Waring Gardens, and were refurbished to be used for community and private events.

groups include the Deniliquin Rovers Football & Netball Club, Deniliquin Netball Association and Deniliquin Rhinos Cricket Club. As you make your way into Memorial Park, you will come across the entry for the Deniliquin Island Sanctuary and the historic water tower and chimney stack. The foundation stone of the water tower was laid in 1882 by Mayor JG Evans. When electric pumps replaced the steam engines driving the pumps in 1930, the original brick housing and engines were demolished. The stack is the only lasting reminder of this building. If you continue through Memorial Park, you’ll come to the entrance of the Deniliquin Regional Park, where you will find Willoughby’s Beach.

Deni Ute Muster gates – No visit to Deniliquin is complete without getting a photo at the iconic Deni Ute Muster site gates. The entry was created by Benjamin Gilbert in 2008, and has become as iconic at the Ute on the Pole in the centre of Deniliquin, in Charlotte St. But this is no longer just a photo stop. Muster HQ and the Deni Ute Muster Museum are now located on site too. The Deni Ute Muster in held on the NSW Labour Day weekend, which in 2024 is Friday, October 4 and Saturday, October 5. The site is also home to the Play on the Plains Festival held on the weekend of the Victorian Labour Day holiday, which is Saturday, March 9 in 2024. Stop at T he Depot The Depot Historical Vehicle and Memorabilia Collection brings history to life in Deniliquin.

Open seven days a week you can immerse yourself in the past amongst the family-friendly interactive displays and activities. Picnic amongst t he red gums Whether you’re camping out in the Edward River Bridge campground, or taking a day trip from Deniliquin or Moama, the Edward River Bridge picnic area is a great place to stop for a barbecue lunch. Its location within Murray Valley Regional Park - part of the Murray Valley reserves - means you can even bring your dog along to this picnic area. Equipped with picnic tables and free barbecues, Edward River Bridge picnic area is set beside the majestic river red gums for which Murray Valley Regional Park and Murray Valley National Park are known. Cook up a storm on the barbecue or sit down and relax at one of the picnic tables. There are also some very interesting metal sculptures depicting the area.

When you’ve polished off your picnic lunch, there’s a lot more to explore – go for a walk along the Gulpa Creek Forest walks or bring along your kayak for a spot of paddling on Edward River canoe and kayak trail. There’s even a wheelchair-accessible kayak launch right near the picnic area. And don’t forget to bring your fishing rod along – there are lots of great spots to drop a line. You might even be lucky enough to land a famous Murray cod. Here’s a tip; local anglers say cheese is one of the best baits for these monsters of the river system. Surface lures are another great option.

Entertainment galore

There’s always something happening at the Deni RSL Club.

During summer it’s the ideal place to escape the heat the Riverina is known for, and relax with a cold drink or delicious meal under the air conditioners.

The club is open daily and there are raffles at 7pm each Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, and at 1pm on a Sunday.

Throughout summer you’ll be treated to free live music in the main lounge every Saturday night from 7pm to 10pm.

For those who love their bingo, the game is played Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and there’s also an all ages trivia every second Tuesday.

Hear from a range of local and visiting artists, who will have your toes tapping from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. Make use of the dance floor and really get that blood pumping. Adding to the musical schedule will be a special New Year’s Eve performance from On Thin Ice in the main lounge.

And when it comes to Happy Hour, the club’s specials extend beyond the bar. The Coffee Shop has its own Happy Hour, which is from 3pm to 4pm daily from Monday to Thursday. In the bar, Happy Hour is from 6pm to 7pm Wednesday to Friday, with an additional Happy Hour from 9pm to 10pm Friday. On Saturday Happy Hour is 5pm to 6pm, and on Sunday it is brought forward to 11am.

There’s plenty of other entertainment at the Deni RSL on other days of the week too.

What’s On Spring 2023 17

The Coffee Shop has its own menu for food and treats and is open from 11am daily, or you can dine in the bistro seven days a week for lunch from 12pm to 2pm and dinner from 6pm. A special school holiday buffet will be available daily from 6pm from December 22 to January 2. The Deni RSL courtesy bus is normally available Thursday through to Saturday, but for the busiest part of the holiday period it will operate daily from December 21 to January 14. Ring the club on 5881 4455 to book your seat. To learn more about what’s on offer at the Deni RSL, head to www.deniliquinrsl.com or follow the Deniliquin RSL Club on Facebook or Instagram.

Reconnect wit h nature Those who know it best have made it easier for you take it all in, developing an itinerary perfect for those seeking to reconnect with nature. Spanning from Moama to Yanga, you can explore at your own pace.

Horseshoe Lagoon - Shaw and Blair Streets, Moama. Horseshoe Lagoon is part of Moama’s Wetland and Floodplain Reserve. The area includes a horseshoeshaped lagoon and a billabong, which provide a home to native birds, animals, plants and fish. Wander along the boardwalks, indulge in some wildlife spotting and learn about the importance of wetlands and floodplains along the mighty Murray River. Horseshoe Lagoon is part of the extensive floodplains along the Murray River that have great significance to Aboriginal people. Some Yorta Yorta elders describe the floodplains as ‘our supermarkets’ as they provided everything required to sustain the first inhabitants of the region. The original Moama wharf was built on the river here in 1879, however, riverboats could only access the wharf during high rivers, so the wharf was abandoned. A new wharf was built in 1988, along with the boardwalk and signage.

Reed Beds Bird Hide Boardwalk Picnic Point Road, Mathoura Reed Beds Bird Hide at Mathoura is a birdwatcher’s paradise; with different birds to see every time you visit, you’ll never grow tired of this pretty place. Take your camera for a stunning photo of an eastern great egret or a musk duck thrashing in the water to attract a mate.

River Country is renowned for its natural beauty, with peaceful water ways, majestic river red gums, enchanting native wildlife and big open skies.

Walking along the boardwalk look for yellow rosellas and superb wrens or watch at the edge of the water for the purple swamp hen. Turn over the bird panels as you stroll along the boardwalk; check out which birds are vegetarians and which prefers frogs, find out who honks like a goose but soars like an eagle.

Gulpa Creek Walk - Picnic Point Road, Mathoura From the historic little town of Mathoura, at Crane’s Bridge, where bullock teams once hauled logs to the timber mill, you can set out on Gulpa Creek walk.

The landscape diversity provides suitable habitat to over 125 species of plants that are endemic to the local region as well as a range of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. To date there have been more than 130 bird species identified by local birdwatchers. The reserve contains three walking tracks with interpretive signage about plants and animals found at the site, and information about how local indigenous ‘Barapa Barapa’ people used local natural resources for food, fibre, medicines and for cultural and spiritual purposes. The facility contains a disabled toilet facility and there are many areas available for barbecues and picnics.

It’s a flat, easy 5km walk or ride among the river red gums along Gulpa Creek in Murray Valley Regional Park, adjacent to Murray Valley National Park.

The Big Tree - Big Tree Car Park, Moulamein

The colours and movement of birdlife around the creek and the light on the red gums are quite a view, and make this walk quite special.

This magnificent River Red Gum (pictured) is one of the largest in the Riverina, measuring 11.6m in circumference.

Gulpa Creek is also a peaceful spot for canoeing or kayaking. What’s more, because of Gulpa Creek walk’s location in Murray Valley Regional Park, you can even bring your dog along for the ride.

The Big Tree is a meeting place and is considered culturally significant by traditional indigenous owners. The age of the tree is estimated to be between 500 years and 1000 years.

You might also like to bring along your binoculars and a bird book so you can identify the birds you see along the way.

As part of the Moulamein River Walk, keep an eye out for a diverse range of local wildlife such as kangaroos, emus, goannas, cockatoos, kookaburras and Bush Stone curlews to name a few.

Located just 1.6km from the town centre, the 10 hectare reserve managed by Barham Landcare is open to visitors to appreciate the natural environment and the wonderful biodiversity at the site.

Explore Moulamein's history The town of Moulamein is a must-visit for history buffs. The Moulamein Heritage Village showcases a wealth of objects and buildings with significant historical value to the area. Spearheaded by the Moulamein Community Development Inc, this project has been years in the making. It has been made a reality thanks to the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Program, and more improvements are pending. Three of the region’s historic structures have been relocated and refurbished at the village, retaining that history for many years to come. Visitors to the Heritage Village can explore the information centre housed in the old Dhuragoon School building and learn about the region’s rich agricultural history, including its iconic wool industry. The village also boasts the relocated and refurbished Jeraly Wool Shed and Werai Stables. A new all-abilities accessible amenities block complements the facilities.

Those who love things on wheels will enjoy checking out the restored trucks and tractors. A centrepiece of this collection is the superb Vickers tractor, produced in Sheffield, England, in the late 1920s. Known as ‘the Aussie’, production stopped in 1930. Ron and Val McWhae, formerly of Moulamein, owned and lovingly restored the tractor on display in the village. Also among the collection are a 1930s Ford truck and two John Deere D-series tractors from local farms. More machinery has been accumulated for outdoor displays, with an oil-driven traction engine to be added this spring as a showpiece. “We’re building on the collection all the time,” Drew Harris said.

“We’ve also recently taken ownership

“We’ve also got buggies and gigs, and a restored dray in the wool shed, which people love.

A link to t he past The Finley Historical Museum is a showcase of the heritage of the Finley district and provides the opportunity to step back in time and view those items that supported the lives of our pioneering rural families. Initiated in 1969 through the fore sight of John Hetrelezis and a group of enthusiastic locals, land was acquired on the Newell Highway adjacent to the Mary Lawson Wayside Rest and fenced to

secure

the

considerable

amount of material that had been collected or promised for later inclusion.

To keep the project moving Christina and Norman McAllister made a donation to build a replica of the log cabin home, which was the first permanent residence in the Finley district, built by their father Charles McAllister at Myrtle Park in 1878. Excessive rain and the flow of town drainage inundated the site for the first time in living memory

in 1975 when great damage was done to the buildings and the moral of the committee. With the pioneering spirit of their forebears the committee continued on with the works to provide drainage, electricity and water installations as well as constructing pavilions to display a vast array of historic farm machinery and memorabilia.

Relax wit h a book

Relaxing with a good book. That’s the ideal holiday for many, and this summer Berrigan Bookshop has the book part of your relaxing holiday covered. Whether you’re staying in the Southern Riverina, spending a day or two on the Murray River with the family or simply passing through, having a decent read to pick up in those quiet times can make all the difference. The only stressful part will be choosing from the extensive range. Sisters Cristina and Carla von Brockhusen estimate they have at least 100,000 books in their catalogue at Berrigan Bookshop. You’ll find new and used books in the catalogue, and trades are welcome. So there’s no need to stick to the same old books if you’re on an extended trip through the region.

In addition to their bricks and mortar store, the sisters have an online presence. According to Carla, their online store specialises solely in books that are niche or hard to obtain. “We only sell things that are hard to find, because there’s no point competing on things that everybody has,” she said. The physical store in Berrigan, however, stocks everything from rare books to popular new releases. There’s even a great selection of foreign language books.

What’s On Spring 2023 31

The Berrigan Bookshop is one of the few bookshops in the area and caters to Berrigan residents and those coming from further afield, including Cobram, Deniliquin, Finley and Wagga Wagga, as well as tourists, who often make the pilgrimage to the store as part of their holiday plans. As for why reading is so important, Carla believes that books expose readers to a whole new world. “To me, books are a happiness and one of the joys in life,” she said.

T he fun of t he fair As a new event in 2023, the Jerilderie Fun Fair enticed almost 800 people.

That success set plans in motion to make it an annual event on the local calendar.

The fun and festivities will be hosted in Jerilderie’s picturesque Monash Park.

And the St Joseph’s School Jerilderie Social & Fundraising Committee has delivered, with the event now set for the first Saturday of March each year.

Gates will open at 3pm, and continue into the event with a family friendly movie on the big screen.

In 2024, another action packed fair is planned for Saturday, March 2.

During the afternoon, children can take advantage of an array of free activities while the adults take time out to peruse the market stalls on offer. Between shopping and playing, relax on the park’s lawns and just enjoy the live music on offer. For a little more action, why not try your luck on the bucking bull or crowd around for the spectacle that is ferret racing. Bring a picnic blanket or your own chairs and take full advantage of the food and refreshment stands and the licensed bar. The fun fair also provides a chance to learn a new skill, with a kokedama workshop to run on the day. Kokedama is a centuries-old Japanese form of garden art that is closely tied to the practice of bonsai. Loosely translated, ‘koke’ means moss and ‘dama’ means ball. Therefore kokedama involves using a moss ball as the supporting and the focal point for a tree, shrub, or plant. The fun fair is presented by St Joseph’s School Jerilderie Social & Fundraising Committee with support from Yanco Delta Wind & Storage and Transgrid.
