AMOUR FOU

PILOT ISSUE

Intro Hello and welcome to the pilot edition of Amour Fou Magazine, a new and modified version of MCRFashionMag. We were planning on launching a printed version of the magazine and distribute it to apartments in Manchester, however, since most of our followers on Twitter are based all around the world we decided to publish the magazine online instead. Subsequently, all future editions will be published on the Apple App store and unlike other magazines it will be available for free. In this issue we have exciting content featuring an interview with a visionary artist Jacky Tsai by Anne-Marie Odesanya, followed by the Emaliomada AW14 show at London Fashion Week with a behind the scenes look from the point of view of the make up artists. We have a review of MAC cosmetics by Gina Badhen and a fashion editorial from Moscow by MUA Elena Markova and her team. Lastly we have our own shoot with Rebecca Appleyard from Boss Model Management shot on the roof of the Barton Arcade in Manchester. In French Amour Fou means “crazy love” and it’s translated into English as “uncontrollable or obsessive passion.” We hope that you share our passion for fashion and creative photography and we welcome your feedback as well as submissions.

JACKY TSAI NOT YOUR USUAL DESIGNER, WHEN ARTISTRY AND VISION COLLIDE! BY ANNE MARIE ODESANYA IN HARVEY NICHOLS MANCHESTER

Speaking to Jacky Tsai one can only wonder what is going through his head. Visions and Designs so great can only be admired. With the celebrations of Chinese New Year and the healthy buzz of a Saturday afternoons’ shopping atmosphere, Harvey Nichols did not disappoint. A quick pop up printing stall could be found on the 2nd floor, printing exclusive T-Shirts bearing Mr Tsai’s designs. 4

Crafting one of the most known symbols in Fashion, Mr Tsai came up with the idea of the skull during an internship at Alexander McQueen. One thing that immediately catches the eye is the giant skull lurking in the corner. Upon asking why he designed the now legendary Skull, Jacky Tsai

“It comes from my day to day life. My upbringing in China and my life currently in the UK are similar so I took it to myself to let the cultures collide and let that aspect of me reflect in my art. Harmony- that is what I am creating.” Jacky Tsai went on to profess that “my goal is to create the best contemporary Chinese work in the artwork. Fashion is definitely a passion but it is important to Contacts: me to extend my art into admits that he chose to illustrate the skull to face and different mediums.” Jacky Tsai combat his fear. “Every time Twitter: @Jackytsai “I want my art to be accesI created a beautiful skull, I jackytsai.com gradually overcame my fear, sible to all, thus my T-Shirt line is the perfect bridge it is good to see that it has Harvey Nichols now become my most iconic between my work and the public. EMALIOMADA SHOW – MAKE UP ARTISTS’ POV by Head Key Artist: Amanda Bell Since leaving London to return to my native North East a few years ago, I’ve made sure to keep in touch with some of the fabulous people I worked with there. I worked very closely with Central Saint Martin’s College for over 8 years – designing and creating makeup for their graduate MA and BA shows, at the V&A Fashion in Motion show and at catwalk shows for London Fashion Week. So I was thrilled to be contacted by Asad Rehman, Head Designer at Emaliomada, after a recommendation from Central Saint Martin’s. He told me he was looking for a makeup artist to collaborate with the brand for their debut catwalk show and wondered if I was interested in the job. The show was scheduled at an amazing venue in Mayfair on Saturday 15th Feb – only 10 days time!

So, immediately after I’d said yes to Asad, I got into action! I had been working with the creative team from Artdeco on a few events such as the National TV Awards and the hugely supported Gavin Blythe Ball – raising money for MacMillan, and I knew they’d be the perfect makeup sponsor for the Emaliomada show.

nude with a smudge of crème lipstick applied with the finger.

After a really productive styling day, collaborating with Asad and head hair stylist Will from Electric salons, the look for the models on the catwalk was completed. The makeup look evolved from a brilliant brief from Asad, channelling the look of a “sweaty girl in a nightclub!” so lots of gloss on the skin and lived-in feel to the eye makeup. I went for an unexpected smoky red pigment for the eyes rather than tones of black or brown and kept lips

The day was amazing and everyone did such a fantastic job – I was so pleased with everyone’s work. I briefed the team by demonstrating the look then coached them through the application to make sure the look was consistent throughout and the finished result on the catwalk was outstanding!

I’d chosen a makeup artist team of key artists from Artdeco @ADCreativ team, London Makeup School and I brought fellow North Easterners Carro of Wynyard photographers and makeup artist Jo Leversuch to complete the team.

STYLIST INTERVIEW: MARIA DIMUENE Tell us a bit about yourself and your career so far, what path did you take to become a fashion stylist? I studied fashion promotion with styling at University of Central Lancashire, I’ve done freelance styling and assisting. Since the age of 18 I got to work with some of the greatest fashion stylists and shoots. What made you want to become a stylist? I’ve always been keen and passionate about fashion from young age, was really drawn into styling as you get to transfer the simplest outfit into something beautiful and creative. How do you prepare for a new fashion shoot? Lots of research and inspiration drawn from all different types of sources like books, music, films and the likes of social media such as Pinterest. Is the job as glamorous as people imagine? It’s a lot of hard work, early starts and sometimes late finish, working in all different weather conditions, outdoors to indoor studio, so if you have the drive then, yes, it can be as glamorous. If you didn’t have any experience of contacts, but wanted to start working as a stylist on fashion shoots, what would you do? What qualities and skills one need to succeed in your job? Start off as an assistant stylist, even if it’s just steaming the clothes or taping the shoes, you get to experience what is really involved in a typical shoot day for a stylist. How do you cooperate with the makeup artists? Mood boards, mood boards and more mood boards!

Does your styling for fashion shoots ever inspire your personal style? I dress according to my mood, I can dress eccentric as well as causal to formal. I like to show personality and style when I dress myself. Who likes to dress as everybody else? If you could style anyone in the world, anywhere in the world, who would you choose, what place would you choose and why? It would have to be Jimmy Hendricks, that guy has utter style he’s super cool and eccentric which I love. What has been the most memorable moment for you as a fashion stylist? Getting to one of my shoots featured on Vogue Italia online, has definitely been a highlight of my career so far.

What trends in styling are you seeing right now? With the great fashion weeks over and so many wonderful trends out there at the minute the trends which I am seeing and loving are.... pastels- can’t ever get tired of pastel, 80’s- love to go http://styledbymariad.4ormat.com/ back in fashion and relive the decade in a modern Mariadimuene@hotmail.com twist and lastly monochrome always so chic and Twitter: @MDstyling clinical.
