I think condoms should be offered at school, because I think it would prevent pregnancies and STDs because high school students are going to have sex regardless of whether condoms are given out at school, so this would just be helping the situation out.

An astounding 50 percent of sexually active people in the U.S will acquire HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) at some point in their life, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. “A majority of people have HPV, and it spreads every day without knowing,” an MC alumna said. “I didn’t know and I ended up being a victim. I wish I knew about this disease earlier. I love my boyfriend so much and I don’t blame him. We both didn’t know.” HPV is impossible to get tested for and can lead to genital warts or cervical cancer. Cervical cancer can be tested through pap smears, which can reveal small tumors in the cervix. Doctors recommend all sexually active girls get tested every year, because HPV is spread through genital contact during sexual activities. According to the alumna, this disease can go undetected; which can be very dangerous, but HPV is also very avoidable.

“There are no tests; the only way to know is if you have the symptoms,” she said. “Over 80 percent of people have it, and less than 50 percent know they do.” Medical professionals have come out with a vaccine for women called Gardasil. The vaccine will prevent against four of the most prominent types of HPV that will lead to cervical cancer or genital warts if left unchecked.
