Expressive photos Museum showcases the work of Scott Heiser By BURT WASSERMAN For 21st Century media
master of light, shadow and reflection, Scott Heiser also had an uncanny gift for stopping action and freeze-framing it with a camera. You can see this for yourself in a superb solo exhibition of his photographs, currently on display in a retrospective exhibition at the Delaware Art Museum, 2301 Kentmere Parkway in Wilmington. It is scheduled to remain there on public view until June 1. A native of The First State, Heiser spent most of his career in the everexciting environment of New York City. While he brought a keenly distinctive eye to his work, he was also influenced by the accomplishments of such earlier artists of the lens medium as Diane Arbus and Gary Winogrand.

Equally at home in the fields of fashion, portraiture and spectacle, his best photographs are in black and white with a rare knack for using extreme angles and extremely ec-
centric cropping. Then too, a major element of Heiser’s stopaction technique is an odd sense of fluidity. You feel the transition of the moment even though the picture is a still presence. It’s as though the image reveals itself by the appearance of its existential opposite. This may sound contradictory and even a trifle peculiar when you read about it. But, it does make sense on the retina, inside your eye. However, you have to see it for yourself because the verbal rationale is an inadequate substitute for explaining what takes place optically. In a manner that defies verbal discussion, Heiser’s graphic forms also voice expressive parameters that go far beyond the mechanical processes that brought them into being. sensitivity to his perceptions that really made the difference between an objective representation of his subjects and the depth of his inner feelings for them. It was also his talent for capturing the precise instant (as famously described by the great French photo-journalist, Henri Cartier-Bresson,) when one’s camera exposure was exactly right. The artist pursued formal advanced study at the Rhode Island School of Design. In that setting, the classes he took with Harry Callahan, contributed significantly to his development as a serious photographer.
these accounts situate Heiser within the context of the creative art community that flourished in downtown New York City during his relatively brief working lifetime. From the Big Apple Circus series, the exhibition includes a remarkable photograph of an elephant head with its trunk folded over, beside the costumed figure of a woman performer holding on to the pachyderm for dear life. It’s as though a mystical force of destiny has brought them together in the midst of a mass entertainment that has strangely surrealistic undertones. Somehow, the scene has a magic that defines an odd sense of truth, but otherwise defies a simultaneously simplistic explanation. In certain ways, many of the pictures in the show are like ignition keys ready to be turned on by the spectator’s imagination. When this is done, the surface suddenly begins to breathe with a sense of revelation that vibrates beyond the ordinary. Floral displays throughout the 10-acre
space in the Convention Center were based on working with museums to interpret art such as Van Gogh’s sunflowers, Monet’s watercolors, Hiroshige’s cherry blossoms and Warhol’s floral prints. One of the main exhibits, created by the American Institute of Floral Designers, was inspired by works from the “Treasures from Korea: Arts and Culture of the Joseon Dynasty, 1392-1910” exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Special exhibits included selections of the Andy Warhol “Flowers” series as well as selections from the West Collection of Oaks, Pa., and examples of sculpture by Steve Tobin of Bucks County. Becher said the results and any future changes
will be discussed by the PHS board in the next few months. Next year’s show will be based upon “Hollywood.” Proceeds from the Flower Show benefit the

Drawing from the same decorative Art Nouveau trends as Tiffany and Quezal, Durand Art Glass had its own style, earning them a gold medal at the Sesquicentennial International Exhibition in 1926. The Gallery of Fine Craft presents Keepers of the Flame: A Celebration of Contemporary Flamework through May 18. Exhibit: NANCY AGATI, whose work delves into nature, draws elements of the natural world into her mixed media work. Her work will be in the Fireside Gallery from April 2 through April 27. A reception is planned for Sunday, April 27 at 1:00 in the Fireside Gallery. She is also showing at the Schuylkill Nature Center through mid-April. Each work contains elements of alteration, assemblage, and restructuring of the original source material.” Strati (fluidity in layers) & Laccio/ plant live and antique lace - Are the titles for 2 large circular works on paper being shown at Main Line Unitarian Church. The impetus for these works began with the skeletal veins of a small decayed leaf. The pattern from the leaf was enlarged, then etched and sand blasted onto a piece of marble. The marble has continuously been used as a printmaking tool, in which both rubbing and stamping techniques were implemented to create an overlapping pattern of lines. Stratum/strata refers to the layering of material, one of several layers, levels or divisions throughout an organized system. Both Strati and Laccio, utilize the repetition of overlapping linear patterns (primarily from the leaf structure) to develop graphic patterns that correspond to those found in nature. The framework of the decayed leaf has been recreated or preserved onto a solid impenetrable object (marble). The perpetual object then forms
a new image, the structural yet fragile and impermanent drawings. Methods of transformation, manipulation and preservation of natural materials exist throughout all the work on exhibit.

She graduated from Rice with a BA in Art and a MFA from the University of Massachusetts. Her current series, “Succulents”, are close in images of botanicals focusing on joyful play between interesting angles and creative use of acrylic on canvas and spirals using prismacolor pencils and fine background bead work. She first takes photos close and at interesting camera angles and then sketches until she produces an image she wishes to commit to her canvas. She either paints with acrylic or uses the pencils to layer the tiny spirals until she achieves the desired effect. For the background of some of her pieces she uses glass beads and beach glass. She says she “explores the transition between figurative and abstract painting in the compositions of my current series.” The images are stylized abstractions of a nature theme and gives you a sense of meditation and draws you in deeply to the center of their world. In addition she is a Master level Reiki practitioner of the healing arts. Rosenfeld’s work is inspirational for clients and artists alike and her work is a must see.
